<p>Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features a persistent algae bloom along the coastline of South Australia near Adelaide. For more than five months, the waters have been marked by the unusual phenomenon. </p>



<p>A bloom of microscopic organisms, almost invisible to the naked eye, has painted the sea with hints of yellow-green, signaling an ecological shift that scientists have been watching closely.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-persistent-bloom-near-australia">Persistent bloom near Australia </h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-turning-green-thanks-to-climate-change-algae-blooms/">bloom</a> began in mid-March around the Fleurieu Peninsula and has yet to fade away. Its persistence has raised alarms for both marine ecosystems and people living along the coast.</p>



<p>The culprit behind this event is a dinoflagellate called <em>Karenia mikimotoi</em>. Although this algae is not classified as toxic to humans, it can still cause skin and eye irritation, along with respiratory discomfort for those who spend time near the shore.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For marine animals, however, the impact is far more serious. The bloom can damage fish gills, suffocating entire populations and threatening local fisheries.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heatwaves-and-unstable-seas">Heatwaves and unstable seas</h2>



<p>The Government of South Australia has linked the prolonged bloom to an equally persistent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-are-rising-faster-than-expected-and-likely-to-accelerate/">marine heatwave</a>. Since September 2024, southern waters have been unusually warm, setting the stage for algal growth on an unprecedented scale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Warm conditions, paired with calm and nutrient-rich waters, create an ideal environment for <em>Karenia mikimotoi</em> to thrive.</p>



<p>The species flourishes in stratified waters. When the ocean layers remain stable, sunlight penetrates the surface while nutrients accumulate in the shallows.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That balance, while favorable for algae, disrupts the natural cycles that coastal ecosystems depend on. Once blooms like this take hold, they can be extremely difficult to break.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-from-space">A closer look from space</h2>



<p>While the bloom has unfolded along South Australia’s coast, the story is being told from far above.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Satellites orbiting Earth now act as essential sentinels, offering wide-ranging views that scientists on the ground could never achieve alone.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Copernicus <a href="https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/Copernicus/Sentinel-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sentinel-3</a> mission, equipped with its Ocean and Land Colour Instrument, has been tracking this bloom with remarkable precision. By measuring chlorophyll-a, which is a pigment that signals the presence of algae, researchers have been able to map the bloom’s reach and intensity.</p>



<p>Satellite data has become more than just a monitoring tool. It provides decision-makers with early warnings and helps governments respond faster to environmental changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. </p>



<p>In this case, the <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extended bloom</a> highlights the importance of pairing ground-based studies with large-scale observations from orbit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-long-algae-blooms-matter">Why long algae blooms matter</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-have-caused-toxic-algae-blooms-since-the-bronze-age/">Algal blooms</a> are not unusual in coastal waters, but their duration and scale often dictate their impact. Short-lived blooms may come and go without causing much disruption.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Extended events like the one unfolding near Adelaide are different. They alter food webs, reduce oxygen levels, and can trigger cascading effects across entire marine ecosystems.</p>



<p>Fisheries are among the first sectors to feel the strain. When fish die in large numbers, not only do local communities face economic losses, but the region’s biodiversity also suffers. Recovery can take years, especially when multiple species are affected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-uncertain-future">An uncertain future</h2>



<p>The South Australian bloom is part of a larger story unfolding worldwide. As oceans warm and marine heatwaves become more frequent, conditions that favor harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/algae-that-thrives-on-ice-plays-an-unexpected-role-in-glacier-melting/">algae</a> are expected to expand.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Blooms that once occurred sporadically may become seasonal features. For coastal communities, this means preparing for more frequent disruptions to fisheries, tourism, and public health.</p>



<p>Even as scientists work to understand the mechanics of <em>Karenia mikimotoi</em> blooms, the bigger picture points to climate change as a driving force.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Marine systems are highly dynamic, and shifts in temperature, currents, and nutrient flow create openings for species that thrive in disturbance.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The bloom near Adelaide may be a local event, but it represents global challenges that are becoming harder to ignore.</p>

Algae bloom lingers for months off Australia

<p>Today's Image of the Day from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope features the most detailed view to date of the planetary nebula NGC 1514.</p>



<p>The nebula sits about 1,500 light-years away in the Taurus constellation. Webb’s latest <a href="https://webbtelescope.org/contents/news-releases/2025/news-2025-118#section-id-2" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observation</a> reveals two dusty rings wrapped around a fading star system, surrounded by orange arcs and glowing gas. </p>



<p>This scene isn’t new - it’s been evolving for at least 4,000 years. Until now, much of its structure remained hidden. Thanks to Webb’s powerful mid-infrared camera, scientists can finally see the full extent of the nebula’s complexity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dust-rings-and-broken-shells">Dust rings and broken shells</h2>



<p>At the center of NGC 1514, two stars locked in a tight nine-year orbit are driving this dramatic display. One of them - formerly several times the mass of our Sun - has shed its outer layers as it reached the end of its life.&nbsp;</p>



<p>What’s left is a hot, compact white dwarf star blasting out faster, weaker winds that may have swept earlier material into thin, fragile shells.</p>



<p>What Webb has <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-may-have-just-found-its-first-planet/">uncovered</a> is a tangled mess of dust, much of which was invisible to previous telescopes. The rings now appear fuzzy and uneven, like clumps floating through space.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-material-ejected-from-a-dying-star">Material ejected from a dying star</h2>



<p>Some areas show distinct holes near the center, marking where faster material appears to have punched through the older gas. The telescope also picked up signs of oxygen in the nebula’s pink core, especially around the edges of the holes.</p>



<p>“Before Webb, we weren’t able to detect most of this material, let alone observe it so clearly,” said Mike Ressler, a project scientist for Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Ressler first spotted the rings in 2010 using an earlier infrared mission, but they were faint and hard to analyze. “With MIRI’s data, we can now comprehensively examine the turbulent nature of this nebula,” he said.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-nebula-s-unusual-shape">The nebula’s unusual shape</h2>



<p>Unlike the perfectly round shapes many might expect, NGC 1514 isn’t a sphere. Webb’s observations show that the whole formation is tilted at about 60 degrees - like a can being tipped over - but its true shape is more like an hourglass with the ends sliced off.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Subtle pinches of dust in shallow V-shapes give clues to this structure, particularly near the top left and bottom right of the image.</p>



<p>The bizarre shape may be due to the interaction between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-map-twin-stars-to-discover-hidden-planets-with-unprecedented-accuracy/">two stars</a>. During the period when the larger star was losing its outer layers, its companion may have drifted extremely close.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“That interaction can lead to shapes that you wouldn’t expect,” said David Jones, a senior scientist who confirmed the central binary system in 2017. “Instead of producing a sphere, this interaction might have formed these rings.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-patchy-rings-with-a-fuzzy-appearance-nbsp">Patchy rings with a fuzzy appearance&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Between the rings, dim and semi-transparent clouds stretch through the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/six-rogue-worlds-discovered-inside-a-young-star-forming-nebula/">nebula</a>, adding body and giving hints at the object’s full three-dimensional shape.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The rings themselves aren’t evenly lit - they fade out toward the top right and bottom left. This patchiness, along with their fuzzy appearance, points to their makeup: very small dust grains.</p>



<p>“We think the rings are primarily made up of very small dust grains,” Ressler explained. “When those grains are hit by ultraviolet light from the white dwarf star, they heat up ever so slightly, which we think makes them just warm enough to be detected by Webb in mid-infrared light.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-simple-mix-of-ingredients">A simple mix of ingredients</h2>



<p>Notably, the nebula lacks something usually seen in similar objects: carbon and its more complex molecules.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Most planetary nebulae contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - carbon-rich compounds that resemble soot. But <a href="https://webbtelescope.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Webb</a> didn’t find any trace of them in NGC 1514.</p>



<p>The absence of the molecules could be due to the swirling motion of the two central stars, which may have prevented more complex molecules from forming. This also allows more light from the stars to escape, helping to illuminate the faint, outer rings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glowing-shells-of-dying-stars">Glowing shells of dying stars</h2>



<p>Astronomers have been studying NGC 1514 for centuries. Back in 1790, William Herschel described it as the first deep-sky object he saw that looked truly cloudy - not just a collection of stars. He couldn’t resolve it into individual points of light the way he could with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trio-of-star-clusters-may-be-the-same-system-at-different-ages/">star clusters</a>. </p>



<p>That cloudy impression was one of the earliest clues pointing toward the existence of planetary nebulae - the glowing shells of gas that dying stars leave behind.</p>



<p>Now, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-telescope-uncovers-secrets-of-dark-matter-in-cosmic-collision-zone/">Webb</a> has revealed the full extent of the cloud Herschel saw. NGC 1514 has turned out to be a complex, dynamic structure still shifting over time.</p>

Webb captures the fading legacy of a dying star

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency features the aftermath of devastating floods in the Valencia region of Eastern Spain.&nbsp;</p>



<p>On October 29, 2024, torrential rainfall unleashed nearly a year’s worth of precipitation in just eight hours, leading to catastrophic flash floods that affected a vast area from Málaga to Valencia. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flash-floods-in-valencia">Flash floods in Valencia </h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flash-floods-are-set-to-become-much-more-common-in-the-u-s/">Floodwaters</a> submerged entire neighborhoods and agricultural lands. Many roads and infrastructure were overwhelmed almost instantly, stranding vehicles and prompting widespread evacuations. Water levels rose faster than emergency services could respond.</p>



<p>One resident of Paiporta, near Valencia, told the BBC that when the water started to rise it was "like a tsunami wave."</p>



<p>“In a matter of minutes, flash floods caused by heavy downpours in eastern Spain swept away everything in their path. With no time to react, people were trapped in vehicles, homes and businesses,” reported the Associated Press.</p>



<p>More than 200 people were killed and thousands of people were rescued. According to SOS Desaparecidos, as many as 1,300 people remained unaccounted for on Friday, three days after the floods.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-magnitude-of-the-tragedy-nbsp">Magnitude of the tragedy&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, said: “The fact that we can’t give a number of the missing persons indicates the magnitude of the tragedy.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Some areas, including the Spanish town of Alfafar, are completely cut off from communication.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Juan Ramón Adsuara, the mayor of Alfafar, said the aid isn't nearly enough for residents trapped in an "extreme situation."</p>



<p>"There are people living with corpses at home. It's very sad. We are organizing ourselves, but we are running out of everything," Adsuara told reporters. "We go with vans to Valencia, we buy and we come back, but here we are totally forgotten."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-government-warning-was-not-issued-in-time">Government warning was not issued in time</h2>



<p>On Tuesday morning, Spain's meteorological agency Aemet warned that torrential rains were forecast for the region of Valencia, before issuing a&nbsp; "maximum red alert.”</p>



<p>Carlos Mazon, Valencia’s regional president, said the government sent out an SMS alert reserved for the “worst possible scenario.” But according to a report from CNN, that alert was sent hours too late.</p>



<p>“By 5 p.m., Valencia’s emergency services were swamped by hundreds of pleas for help throughout the region,” wrote Atika Shubert, a CNN Senior International Correspondent.</p>



<p>“It was at 8 p.m. that cell phones finally buzzed with the public alert telling residents to stay indoors. Much too little, much too late, even for those downstream of the raging water who might otherwise have had time to prepare.”</p>



<p>The BBC also noted that many people have questioned the timing of the government's warning, which arrived more than 12 hours after Aemet issued its first red alert.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-weather-in-a-warming-climate">Extreme weather in a warming climate</h2>



<p>The deadly floods in Valencia were primarily caused by an extreme weather event that brought record-breaking <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-events-are-interconnected-around-the-globe/">rainfall</a>. The intense downpour was fueled by unusually warm Mediterranean Sea temperatures, which increased moisture in the atmosphere and intensified the rainfall.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Climate experts link this phenomenon to climate change, as warmer seas lead to more frequent, severe storms. The combination of heavy rain and the region's limited drainage capacity led to flash flooding, overwhelming local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predicting-floods-its-not-just-about-rainfall/">infrastructure</a>.</p>



<p>Rising ocean temperatures are largely driven by increased greenhouse gases that trap more heat in the atmosphere. Oceans absorb about 90% of this excess heat, leading to warmer waters, especially near the surface.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This warming disrupts marine ecosystems, contributing to coral bleaching and altering habitats for species like fish and marine mammals.</p>



<p>With the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/">climate crisis</a> intensifying, experts warn that warmer ocean temperatures will heighten the risk of rapid, destructive rainfall events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-second-deadliest-flood-in-europe-this-century-nbsp">Second-deadliest flood in Europe this century&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the disaster was the second-deadliest flood in Europe this century and that Spain was carrying out its largest deployment of army and security force personnel in peacetime. The country was sending 5,000 soldiers and 5,000 police officers to the eastern region of Valencia on Saturday.</p>



<p>Four days after the devastating floods, rescuers are still searching for bodies. Thousands of volunteers are helping to clean up the thick mud that covers streets, homes, and businesses in the hardest-hit towns.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Prime Minister Sanchez responded to people who expressed they feel abandoned with no help or communication in the days following the tragic flooding.</p>



<p>“I am aware the response is not enough, there are problems and severe shortages… towns buried by mud, desperate people searching for their relatives.”</p>



<p>"For those who at this moment are still looking for their loved ones, the whole of Spain weeps with you."</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.esa.int/">ESA</a>, the Copernicus Emergency Rapid Mapping Service has been activated to provide satellite imagery that can support rescue and recovery efforts.</p>

Valencia floods: A tragedy fueled by extreme weather

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency features a false-color radar depiction of central Ethiopia.</p>



<p>According to ESA, the photograph is a blend of multiple Sentinel-1 images from spring, summer and autumn 2023, which have been overlaid to create this single image.</p>



<p>“Radar images capture surface texture rather than reflected light so they are naturally black and white but here images from each season have been assigned a different color: red, green and blue respectively,” explained <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>.</p>



<p>“When the images are combined, the different colors reveal variations that occurred in the different seasons.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rugged-terrain-of-central-ethiopia-nbsp">Rugged terrain of central Ethiopia&nbsp;</h2>



<p>ESA noted that Ethiopia’s terrain is one of the most rugged in Africa. The landscape is primarily characterized by highlands and plateaus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Ethiopian Highlands, also known as the Roof of Africa, dominate this region and include some of the highest peaks in Africa, such as Ras Dashen. The terrain features steep escarpments, deep valleys, and numerous rivers.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The central part of the country is also home to the Great Rift Valley, which runs through Ethiopia and includes a series of lakes and volcanic mountains. The region's varied topography contributes to its rich biodiversity and distinct climate zones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lakes-of-central-ethiopia-nbsp">Lakes of central Ethiopia&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to ESA, water bodies appear dark in this image because flat water surfaces reflect the radar signal away from the satellite. “The various colors visible in some lakes are due either to the changing surface currents and sediments from rivers or to variations in water level.”</p>



<p>Lake Ziway is one of the largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/africas-flamingos-at-risk-due-to-rising-lake-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lakes</a> in the region. It is located about 160 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The lake is known for its rich bird diversity, including large populations of pelicans, cormorants, and herons. Lake Ziway also supports local fishing communities.</p>



<p>Lake Shala is the deepest lake in the Ethiopian Rift Valley and is known for its volcanic origins. It has a maximum depth of 266 meters and is surrounded by hot springs and steep, rocky cliffs.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-of-central-ethiopia-nbsp">Climate of central Ethiopia&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Central Ethiopia features a diverse climate, primarily influenced by its elevation and geographical location within the tropics.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-highland-climate">Highland climate</h3>



<p>Much of central Ethiopia consists of highlands, with elevations ranging from 1,500 to over 3,000 meters above sea level. These highlands experience a temperate climate, with cooler <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/temperatures-in-africa-are-rising-above-levels-that-rhinoceros-can-tolerate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures</a> compared to the lowlands.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The average temperatures range from 50 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The higher elevations, such as those found in the Ethiopian Highlands, can experience temperatures that are close to freezing at night.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rainy-seasons">Rainy seasons</h3>



<p>Central Ethiopia has two main rainy seasons. The primary rainy season, known as the "Kiremt," occurs from June to September and brings the majority of the annual rainfall.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The "Belg," or short rainy season, occurs from March to May. The rainfall during these periods supports agriculture, which is a key part of the region's economy.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dry-season">Dry season</h3>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/africas-wet-forests-have-seen-an-alarming-rise-in-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dry season</a>, known as the "Bega," spans from October to February.&nbsp;During this time, the region experiences significantly less rainfall, and the weather tends to be sunny and dry. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture-of-central-ethiopia-nbsp">Culture of central Ethiopia&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-are-not-the-only-animals-that-create-their-own-culture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">culture</a> of central Ethiopia is a dynamic blend of ancient traditions and modern influences. This culture is characterized by a strong sense of community and a profound connection to the region's historical and spiritual roots.</p>



<p>The Amhara people have played a significant role in the cultural and political life of central Ethiopia. The Amhara are known for their rich heritage, which includes the Amharic language, a Semitic tongue that serves as one of the country's official languages.</p>



<p>Orthodox Christianity is a key aspect of central Ethiopian culture, particularly among the Amhara and other highland communities.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This part of East Africa is also known for its traditional music and dance, which reflect the region's historical depth and cultural diversity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The cuisine of central Ethiopia is another significant cultural aspect, with injera (a spongy flatbread made from teff) being a staple food.&nbsp;Injera is typically served with a variety of stews (wats) and salads.</p>

<p>The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as Messier 104, is one of the most intriguing and easily recognizable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/james-webb-captures-galaxies-that-are-too-old-to-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">galaxies</a> in the night sky.</p>



<p>The galaxy is notable for its bright nucleus, large central bulge, and prominent dust lane that gives it a sombrero-like appearance when viewed from Earth. It is located in the constellation Virgo, about 29 million light-years away.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-appearance">Appearance</h3>



<p>The most distinguishing feature is the dark dust lane that encircles the galaxy along its equator, resembling the rim of a sombrero hat. This dust lane is composed of interstellar dust and gas, where new stars are being born.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-galaxy-type-and-structure">Galaxy type and structure</h3>



<p>The Sombrero Galaxy is classified as an SA(s)a galaxy, indicating it is an unbarred spiral galaxy with a prominent nucleus. </p>



<p>However, its large bulge and dust lane also give it characteristics of an elliptical galaxy and a lenticular galaxy, making it a hybrid of sorts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bright-nucleus">Bright nucleus</h3>



<p>The galaxy has a very bright nucleus, which is thought to house a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/largest-map-of-supermassive-black-holes-unveiled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">supermassive black hole</a>. Observations suggest the black hole at its center is one of the most massive known, with an estimated mass of hundreds of millions of solar masses.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-size-and-scale">Size and scale</h3>



<p>The Sombrero Galaxy spans about 50,000 light-years in diameter, making it about half the size of our Milky Way. Its halo is also populated with globular clusters, similar to the Milky Way, though the exact number is still a subject of research.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-research-and-discovery">Research and discovery</h3>



<p>Due to its unique features and relatively close proximity, the Sombrero Galaxy has been the focus of extensive research and has been studied across various wavelengths - from radio to X-ray. </p>



<p>These studies help astronomers gain insights into the processes of galaxy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-like-our-own-milky-way-are-not-unique/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">formation</a> and evolution.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-expanding-universe-model-nbsp">The expanding universe model&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The expanding universe model is a fundamental concept in cosmology that describes the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-study-claims-our-universe-is-27-billion-years-old-double-the-current-age-estimate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">universe</a> as continuously growing in scale over time. </p>



<p>This model is based on observations that galaxies are moving away from each other, with their separation increasing as time progresses.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The Sombrero Galaxy was one of the first galaxies to be identified as having a redshift, indicating it is moving away from us, which was an important piece of evidence supporting the expanding universe model. The key aspects of this model include:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hubble-s-law">Hubble's Law</h3>



<p>In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are receding from each other at velocities proportional to their distances. </p>



<p>This relationship, known as Hubble's Law, provided the first observational evidence for the expanding universe. It suggests that the farther away a galaxy is, the faster it appears to be moving away from us. </p>



<p>This expansion is often described by the analogy of dots on an inflating balloon; as the balloon expands, the dots (representing galaxies) move away from each other.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-bang-theory">Big Bang Theory</h3>



<p>The expanding universe model is a cornerstone of the Big Bang theory, which posits that the universe began as a singular, extremely hot and dense point approximately 13.8 billion years ago. </p>



<p>The universe has been expanding and cooling ever since. This theory explains the creation of all space, time, matter, and energy.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-microwave-background-radiation">Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation</h3>



<p>The discovery of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation in 1965 provided strong evidence for the Big Bang theory and the expanding universe model. </p>



<p>The CMB is the afterglow radiation from the Big Bang, observed as a faint microwave signal pervasive throughout the universe. It is considered a snapshot of the infant universe, showing a time about 380,000 years after the Big Bang when the universe had cooled enough for atoms to form and light to travel freely.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accelerated-expansion">Accelerated Expansion</h3>



<p>Observations of distant supernovae in the late 20th century revealed that the universe's expansion is accelerating, not slowing down as previously assumed. </p>



<p>This acceleration is attributed to a mysterious force termed "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark energy</a>," which constitutes about 68% of the total energy content of the universe.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmological-principle">Cosmological Principle</h3>



<p>The expanding universe model is based on the cosmological principle, which states that on large scales, the universe is homogeneous (uniform in composition) and isotropic (appearing the same in all directions). This principle supports the observation that the expansion of the universe is uniform and not directed outward from a central point.</p>



<p>The model has profoundly impacted our understanding of cosmology, leading to further inquiries into the nature of dark matter, dark energy, and the ultimate fate of the universe.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-about-the-image">More about the image</h2>



<p>"NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has trained its razor-sharp eye on one of the universe's most stately and photogenic galaxies, the Sombrero galaxy, Messier 104 (M104). The galaxy's hallmark is a brilliant white, bulbous core encircled by the thick dust lanes comprising the spiral structure of the galaxy," said <a href="https://www.esa.int/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>.</p>



<p>"As seen from Earth, the galaxy is tilted nearly edge-on. We view it from just six degrees north of its equatorial plane. This brilliant galaxy was named the Sombrero because of its resemblance to the broad rim and high-topped Mexican hat."</p>



<p>According to ESA, at a relatively bright magnitude of +8, Messier 104 is just beyond the limit of naked-eye visibility and can be easily viewed through small telescopes. </p>



<p>"The Sombrero lies at the southern edge of the rich Virgo cluster of galaxies and is one of the most massive objects in that group, equivalent to 800 billion suns. The galaxy is 50,000 light-years across and is located 30 million light-years from Earth."</p>

The Sombrero Galaxy hints at an expanding universe 

<p>Today's Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a vibrant and detailed depiction of the Gulf of Oman. The image was captured by the primary sensor on the PACE satellite. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pace-satellite-nbsp">PACE satellite&nbsp;</h2>



<p>NASA launched the PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on February 8, 2024. The mission marks a significant advancement in our ability to study Earth’s oceanic and atmospheric systems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The PACE satellite is equipped with a state-of-the-art Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), designed to capture intricate details of ocean phenomena that are often invisible to the naked eye. </p>



<p>This technology aims to provide new insights into the complex interactions between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/good-news-ocean-oxygen-loss-may-ultimately-reverse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a> and the atmosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compelling-visual-data-nbsp">Compelling visual data&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Less than two months after its launch, the PACE satellite has already begun delivering compelling visual data, thanks to the efforts of NASA engineer Joseph Knuble and his team. </p>



<p>Knuble, who serves as the lead instrument systems engineer for OCI, compiled a remarkable gallery of 36 images.</p>



<p>This standout image of the Gulf of Oman has been created using a combination of red, green, and blue wavelengths of light, specifically at 630, 532, and 465 nanometers, respectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gulf-of-oman-image">Gulf of Oman image</h2>



<p>The Gulf of Oman image selected by Knuble is not a natural-color representation but is enhanced to highlight specific details within the water. </p>



<p>This technique allows for a more vivid portrayal of oceanic features, such as the swirling bands of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/phytoplankton-remain-surprisingly-active-underneath-arctic-sea-ice/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a> bloom. </p>



<p>Jeremy Werdell, PACE project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, noted: "The image highlights the beauty and complexity of that area."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phytoplankton-bloom-in-the-gulf-of-oman-nbsp">Phytoplankton bloom in the Gulf of Oman&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Phytoplankton blooms, like the one visible in the Gulf of Oman, occur when environmental conditions - such as light availability and nutrient levels - are favorable, leading to rapid growth. These blooms can have significant ecological impacts.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The swirls of green seen in the image likely include Noctiluca scintillans, a type of marine dinoflagellate known for its striking appearances. </p>



<p>However, despite their beauty, Noctiluca blooms deplete <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cautionary-tale-todays-ocean-oxygen-levels-may-have-cascading-impacts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxygen levels</a> in the water, resulting in hypoxia and creating dead zones that severely impact marine life.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-dynamics-in-the-arabian-sea-nbsp">Changing dynamics in the Arabian Sea&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The changing dynamics in the Arabian Sea are also noteworthy. Historically rich in diatoms, vital components of the marine food chain, the region now sees a dominance of Noctiluca. </p>



<p>This shift could be attributed to changes in water stratification and nutrient availability - with Noctiluca thriving under conditions that are less favorable for diatoms.</p>



<p>One of the most impressive aspects of the OCI is its ability to detect hundreds of different wavelengths of light. </p>



<p>This capability provides a critical tool for identifying and differentiating between various types of phytoplankton from space. Previously, such determinations could only be made through direct water samples.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tracking-the-health-of-marine-ecosystems-nbsp">Tracking the health of marine ecosystems&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The PACE mission is poised to transform our understanding of oceanic and atmospheric interactions. </p>



<p>By providing detailed, high-resolution images and data, the satellite will enable scientists to monitor environmental changes, track the health of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine ecosystems</a>, and better understand the global climate system. </p>

<p>The Gulf of Oman is particularly important for its role in global oil transportation. A large percentage of the world's petroleum, as it is shipped from the oil-rich countries of the Persian Gulf, passes through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman and then to various destinations across the globe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This makes the area not only economically significant but also a hot spot for geopolitical tensions and security concerns.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from NASA Earth Observatory features a plume of Saharan dust pouring off the coast of southern Morocco.</p>



<p>The Sahara Desert is the world's biggest source of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-is-an-understudied-contributor-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">airborne dust</a>. Each year, it releases hundreds of millions of tons of mineral dust that are lifted into the atmosphere and transported across vast distances up to thousands of miles.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saharan-air-layer-nbsp">Saharan Air Layer&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The transport of Saharan dust is primarily driven by the trade winds and atmospheric phenomena such as the Saharan Air Layer (SAL). This dry air mass often accompanies tropical storms across the Atlantic, sometimes even influencing the development and intensity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saharan-dust-can-intensify-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hurricanes</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“From late spring to early fall, it is common for the dry, dusty Saharan Air Layer to carry the particles westward across the Atlantic Ocean high in the atmosphere. With different wind patterns in the winter and spring, dust emerging from North Africa can drift over the United Kingdom and western Europe at relatively low altitudes,” said <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/153246/dust-pours-off-the-moroccan-coast" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>.</p>



<p>“Saharan Air Layer activity subsides after mid-August, according to NOAA, making it less likely that the plume shown here is bound for a transoceanic journey. Instead, it arcs to the north after blowing out over the ocean. Earlier in the summer, however, several clouds of fine dust from the Sahara reached the United States, creating hazy skies over Texas.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-saharan-dust-nbsp">Impacts of Saharan dust&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Saharan dust plays a crucial role in global climate and environmental systems. For example, Saharan dust can affect weather patterns by absorbing and scattering sunlight, influencing temperature and cloud formation. It also plays a role in fertilizing ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest, by providing essential nutrients like iron and phosphorus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, Saharan dust also has more complex impacts. It can reduce air quality, leading to respiratory issues in people living downwind of the dust. In addition, the dust impacts <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-dust-plays-surprisingly-crucial-role-in-stabilizing-ocean-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean</a> health by contributing to algae blooms, which can create dead zones in marine environments.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dust-clouds-and-human-health">Dust clouds and human health</h2>



<p>In a recent study from Texas A&amp;M University, researchers explored the potential health impacts of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sahara-desert-dust-storms-carry-harmful-bacteria-and-fungi-around-the-globe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacteria and fungi</a> that travel within dust plumes.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found traces of several pathogens known to cause disease in humans, as listed by the World Health Organization (WHO).</p>



<p>Study co-author Dr. Daniel Spalink noted that while the DNA of several pathogenic bacteria and fungi were identified in African dust, it is not yet known if they can infect us and make us sick.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-summertime-dust-events">Summertime dust events</h2>



<p>“Scientists are interested in summertime Saharan dust events in part because of the influence they can have on large storm systems. </p>



<p>Dry, stable, dust-laden air can inhibit tropical cyclone formation in the North Atlantic. And in a new study, researchers found that dust can modulate the amount of rainfall brought by these storms,” noted NASA.</p>



<p>“Using a machine-learning model based on meteorological data, NASA’s IMERG (Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM) precipitation estimates, and other satellite measurements, the study’s authors found that dust optical depth - a measure of how much light filters through a dusty plume - was a key predictor of rainfall from tropical cyclones.”</p>



<p>The researchers concluded that smaller amounts of dust particles promote the formation of rain clouds, while the sunlight-blocking effects of large dust clouds ultimately suppress precipitation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-saharan-dust-storms">Saharan dust storms</h2>



<p>Dust storms in the Sahara Desert are some of the most far-reaching in the world. These storms, also known as haboobs, occur when strong winds lift large quantities of sand and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-impacts-dust-levels-on-a-global-scale/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dust</a> from the desert's surface into the atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Saharan dust storms vary in intensity, with some being relatively mild while others are severe, reducing visibility to almost zero and creating hazardous conditions. </p>



<p>They often happen in the spring and early summer when the temperature difference between the desert and the surrounding regions creates strong pressure gradients, fueling powerful winds.</p>



<p>Ultimately, these dust storms are a natural part of life. They shape the landscape over time by eroding rock formations and redistributing sand dunes. </p>



<p>Despite their destructive potential, they are also a reminder of the dynamic and interconnected nature of Earth's climate systems.</p>

Saharan dust launches off the Moroccan coast

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from NASA Earth Observatory features Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Florida’s west coast near Siesta Key on the evening of October 9, 2024.</p>



<p>Hurricane Milton arrived just two weeks after Hurricane Helene caused devastation across the Southeast.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-milton-raced-across-florida">Hurricane Milton raced across Florida</h2>



<p>According to the National Hurricane Center, the category 3 storm lashed the region with heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and life-threatening storm surge. In St. Petersburg, the hurricane dropped more than 18 inches of rain in a 24-hour period.</p>



<p>“The storm maintained hurricane-strength intensity and fast, forward speed while crossing Florida, emerging over the western Atlantic as a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 85 miles (140 kilometers) per hour on October 10,” noted <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/153440/hurricane-milton-crosses-florida" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-destruction-of-hurricane-milton-nbsp">Destruction of Hurricane Milton&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In the aftermath of the hurricane, hundreds of people and dozens of animals have been rescued from floodwaters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>CNN reported that as of Thursday night, first responders had rescued around 1,000 people and rescues were still underway.</p>



<p>At least 16 people were killed, and many of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hurricanes-cause-thousands-of-deaths-that-are-unaccounted-for/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fatalities</a> were due to tornadoes spawned by the storm, which caused significant destruction.</p>



<p>Around 125 homes, including mobile homes in vulnerable communities, were completely destroyed before the storm even made landfall.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In several areas, such as Siesta Key, roofs were torn off buildings, homes were flooded, and neighborhoods were inundated by storm surge.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The storm also knocked out power to more than three million customers. The largest number of outages were in Hardee, Sarasota, and Manatee counties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-milton-and-climate-change-nbsp">Hurricane Milton and climate change&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Milton peaked as a Category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico with sustained winds of 180 miles per hour.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-causes-the-rapid-intensification-of-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intensification</a> of Milton, which saw its pressure drop drastically in a short period, is consistent with the increasing frequency of intense hurricanes driven by warmer oceans and altered atmospheric patterns.</p>



<p>Researchers at World Weather Attribution researchers said that without <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/definitive-link-found-between-intensity-of-early-hurricanes-and-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>, a hurricane like Milton would have made landfall as a weaker Category 2 storm.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricanes-in-a-warming-climate-nbsp">Hurricanes in a warming climate&nbsp;</h2>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/yet-another-hurricane-wetter-windier-and-more-destructive-because-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>, human-caused climate change intensified Hurricane Milton's rainfall by 20 to 30 percent and strengthened its winds by about 10 percent.</p>



<p>“There is also growing evidence that hurricanes are now intensifying more rapidly, becoming more intense, and will continue to do so with further warming,” the researchers noted.&nbsp;</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-hurricane-intensity">Increased hurricane intensity</h3>



<p>Warmer ocean temperatures fuel hurricanes, giving them more energy and leading to more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-hurricanes-are-intensifying-faster-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storms</a>. Studies show that there has been an increase in the frequency of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes, the most powerful types of storms.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heavier-rainfall">Heavier rainfall</h3>



<p>Warmer air holds more moisture, meaning hurricanes are producing more intense rainfall. This can lead to greater flooding, which has become a more prominent feature of recent hurricanes.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency features the delta of the Ebro River on the northeast coast of Spain, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.</p>

<p>“Stretching across 910 km of northern Spain, the Ebro River is the second-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. In the image, it can be seen as a green line winding its way through the peninsula before flowing into the Mediterranean, shaping the Ebro Delta,” noted ESA.</p>



<p>“The Ebro River discharges more water into the sea than any other river in Spain. As suspended sediment flows from the river’s mouth, it tints the coastal waters with a turquoise hue.”</p>



<p>The Ebro Delta is one of the largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wetland-methane-emissions-have-surged-at-high-latitudes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wetland areas</a> in the western Mediterranean region. The river's basin is the largest in Spain, covering about 85,000 square kilometers.</p>

The Ebro River on the coast of Spain

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from NASA Earth Observatory features brightly colored sediment that was stirred up in the Gulf of Mexico by Hurricane Helene.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The category 4 storm made landfall on September 26, 2024 in Florida’s Big Bend area with peak wind speeds of 140 miles per hour.</p>



<p>“The heavy rains, high winds, and storm surge that affected land areas also left a mark on the ocean,” said <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/153390/hurricane-helene-stirs-up-gulf-coast-waters" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>.</p>



<p>“Helene’s winds and waves churned up sediment from the seafloor along shallow coastal areas. Light reflects from these fine particles and makes the water appear bright blue.”&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-helene-s-widespread-devastation-nbsp">Helene’s widespread devastation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Hurricane Helene caused widespread destruction across the Southeastern U.S., including severe storm surges and catastrophic inland flooding.</p>



<p>Western North Carolina was hit particularly hard by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/storms-like-helene-release-toxic-chemicals-from-industrial-facilities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storm</a>, with rivers like the French Broad River cresting at historic levels. </p>



<p>Asheville and surrounding towns suffered extensive damage due to rising waters, landslides, and infrastructure collapses. Roads were blocked by mudslides - including parts of Interstate 40 - and bridges were washed away.</p>



<p>Entire communities, such as Chimney Rock Village and parts of Swannanoa, were virtually wiped out by several feet of fast-moving water and landslides.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aging-infrastructure-in-high-risk-areas">Aging infrastructure in high-risk areas</h2>



<p>In a recent report from Virginia Tech, experts describe Helene as a prime example of how a combination of natural forces, aging infrastructure, and human decisions can magnify the impact of disasters.</p>



<p>Professor Manoochehr Shirzaei warned that legacy systems - including levees, dams, bridges, roads, and electrical grids - were not originally designed to endure the growing severity of hurricanes exacerbated by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-hurricanes-are-intensifying-faster-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>. </p>



<p>“As these structures deteriorate with time, their vulnerability to failure during extreme weather events increases," said Professor Shirzaei.</p>



<p>As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather</a> events become more frequent in a warming climate, addressing the condition of aging infrastructure becomes critical to reducing future disaster risks. In addition, the number of people living in flood-prone areas has dramatically increased.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Many communities are located in river valleys or downstream of dams. These areas are particularly vulnerable to sudden water discharges.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Over the past few decades, the expansion of human populations into flood-prone areas has accelerated worldwide,” said Professor Shirzaei.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-helene-and-climate-change">Hurricane Helene and climate change</h2>



<p>A recent report from ClimaMeter revealed that Helene’s rainfall totals and winds were strengthened by human-driven climate change, with up to 20 percent more rainfall and winds up to seven percent stronger.</p>



<p>Scientific consensus suggests that tropical storms will become increasingly <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-moving-tropical-cyclones-are-becoming-more-powerful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more powerful</a> in a warmer climate. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increased-hurricane-intensity">Increased hurricane intensity</h3>



<p>Warmer ocean temperatures fuel hurricanes, giving them more energy and leading to more intense storms. Studies show that there has been an increase in the frequency of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes, the most powerful types of storms.</p>

Hurricane Helene left its mark on the ocean

<p>Life needs proteins for almost everything, from cell repair to immune defense. Scientists have long asked how the first proteins were formed before cells had complex machinery.</p>



<p>A new study reports a simple, water-friendly reaction that links early ingredients into the first steps toward protein-making. </p>



<p>The project was led by Professor Matthew Powner at University College London (<a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>), a chemist whose lab explores prebiotic chemistry.</p>



<p>"At life’s functional core, there is a complex and inseparable interplay between nucleic acids and proteins, but the origin of this relationship remains a mystery," wrote the researchers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecules-that-build-proteins">Molecules that build proteins</h2>



<p>The team showed that RNA - a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-discovery-water-molecules-will-force-chemistry-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/">molecule</a> that stores and transfers genetic information and can catalyze reactions - can become chemically linked to amino acids. </p>



<p>These small molecules build proteins, and the linkage occurs under mild conditions in water.</p>



<p>The researchers changed amino acids into a more reactive form that holds extra energy, then linked those energized amino acids to RNA at a specific spot in the molecule, all without needing enzymes.</p>



<p>The reaction preferred the end of a double stranded RNA over interior positions, which avoids random chemistry that would scramble sequences. </p>



<p>The experts also reported strong yields for several amino acids, including arginine linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forgotten-chemical-reactions-offer-clues-to-lifes-origins/">adenosine</a> at up to 76 percent.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sulfur-chemistry-drives-origins">Sulfur chemistry drives origins</h2>



<p>A thiol is a sulfur-containing compound common in metabolism, and thioesters made from thiols power many reactions in modern cells. </p>



<p>Using thioesters makes chemical sense for early Earth because they react in water without falling apart quickly, helping drive protein-related chemistry.</p>



<p>Earlier work from the same community showed that pantetheine, the active fragment of Coenzyme A that forms many biological thioesters today, can form under prebiotic conditions in water. </p>



<p>That work supports the idea that the same types of sulfur chemistry existed before life began.</p>



<p>This new result connects that energy-rich chemistry to RNA handling of amino acids. It links metabolism- like reactions to information carriers, which is exactly the bridge origin of life research has needed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molecules-found-in-all-living-cells">Molecules found in all living cells</h2>



<p>The team uncovered a switch that controls two different steps. In step one, thioesters favor attaching the amino acid to RNA, creating aminoacyl RNA in water at neutral pH. </p>



<p>In step two, converting to thioacids and adding a mild oxidant pushed peptide bond formation, which produced peptidyl RNA in very high yields.</p>



<p>Peptides are short chains of amino acids, usually two to 50 units long, while larger folded chains are proteins. </p>



<p>Making peptidyl RNA shows that RNA-bound amino acids can be extended into short chains, a necessary move toward protein-like function.</p>



<p>“What is groundbreaking is that the activated amino acid used in this study is a thioester, a type of molecule made from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-compound-suggests-that-life-beyond-earth-could-be-common/">Coenzyme A</a>, a chemical found in all living cells," said Dr. Jyoti Singh of UCL Chemistry. "This discovery could potentially link metabolism, the genetic code, and protein building,”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-neutral-waters-spark-proteins">Neutral waters spark proteins</h2>



<p>The chemistry works in water at near neutral pH, which points to pools, lakes, or wet shorelines rather than the open ocean. </p>



<p>Concentrations would have been higher in small bodies of water, and minerals could have helped organize the molecules.</p>



<p>Freeze concentrate cycles also help. The researchers observed effective aminoacylation under eutectic ice conditions near 19°F. </p>



<p>In this environment, ice excludes salt and concentrates solutes into brines, which speed reactions without harsh reagents.</p>



<p>“It seems pretty probable that this reaction would have been occurring on early Earth,” said Professor Powner. That assessment reflects the mild requirements and the water compatibility of the chemistry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bridging-chemistry-and-biology">Bridging chemistry and biology</h2>



<p>Modern cells make proteins with the ribosome, a ribonucleoprotein machine that reads messenger RNA and couples amino acids with the help of transfer RNAs. </p>



<p>The new chemistry provides a path for RNA to handle amino acids without proteins, easing the chicken or egg problem.</p>



<p>An earlier study proposed an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rna-breakthrough-sheds-light-on-the-beginning-of-life/">RNA</a> peptide world in which RNA and short peptides co-evolved, forming chimeric molecules that could grow and select function. </p>



<p>The present result shows a plausible way for RNA to acquire and extend amino acids in water.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-modern-genetic-code">The modern genetic code</h2>



<p>The genetic code is the set of rules that maps RNA triplets to amino acids. </p>



<p>By preferring attachment at RNA termini and operating under duplex control, this chemistry hints at how sequence specific pairing could later become coded instruction.</p>



<p>The researchers point to the need for sequence preferences that pair specific RNA sequences with specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lifes-building-blocks-may-have-formed-near-newborn-stars-and-planets/">amino acids</a>. That would move from chemistry that charges RNA to chemistry that begins to encode.</p>



<p>Success there would show how early RNA could use simple rules to shape peptide sequences, with later evolution building the fully fledged ribosome and the modern code.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09388-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Nature</em></a>.</p>

Scientists think they discovered the origin of life on Earth

<p>The record holder for the most distant star known to date, nicknamed Earendel, is 12.9 billion light-years away. It's light left the source when the Universe was less than a billion years old. </p>



<p>However, new data from the James Webb Space Telescope (<a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">JWST</a>) suggest that Earendel could actually be <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/james-webb-earendel-star.jpg">a compact group of stars</a> bound together by gravity.</p>



<p>If that reclassification holds, it would reshape how astronomers use rare cosmic alignments to probe the young universe. It would also expand what we can learn about how today’s ancient star clusters first came together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-earendel-fooled-us">Why Earendel fooled us</h2>



<p>Lead author Massimo Pascale of the University of California, <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berkeley</a>, and collaborators, revisited Earendel because the original Hubble detection left room for more than one interpretation. </p>



<p>A recent <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-04449-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> pinned the source at redshift 6.2, or about 900 million years after the Big Bang, but a single unresolved point in a highly magnified arc can hide complexity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Earendel sits behind a foreground galaxy cluster that acts as a natural telescope through gravitational lensing, the bending and amplification of light by mass. </p>



<p>Subsequent JWST imaging pushed the lower limit on the magnification above 4,000, as reported in a study, which makes an intrinsically tiny source look bright and compact.</p>



<p>With JWST spectroscopy, Pascale’s team also measured a precise redshift for the host, z = 5.926, which set the scene for physically motivated modeling. </p>



<p>Their study explores whether the observed continuum can be explained by a simple stellar population rather than a single hot star.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-jwst-added">What JWST added</h2>



<p>JWST’s NIRSpec prism provides a smooth spectrum across near infrared wavelengths, which lets astronomers fit how brightness changes with color. </p>



<p>When the team compared Earendel’s spectrum with models of compact clusters that differ in age and chemical content, they found strong consistency with a cluster solution.</p>



<p>“What’s reassuring about this work is that if Earendel really is a star cluster, it isn’t unexpected!” said Pascale.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“At the spectral resolution of the NIRSpec instrument, the spectrum of a lensed star and a star cluster can be very similar,” said Brian Welch, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://umd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Maryland</a> and NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Goddard Space Flight Center</a>. Not everyone is ready to close the case, and that caution matters. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lone-stars-differ-from-star-clusters">Lone stars differ from star clusters</h2>



<p>One line of evidence comes from microlensing, a temporary brightening that happens when a smaller mass drifts across the line of sight and briefly focuses the light from the background source. </p>



<p>A compact star should fluctuate more sharply than a larger cluster, so time series monitoring can reveal which interpretation fits the data. </p>



<p>JWST can also test for subtle spectral signatures that would favor a dominant massive star. If those features are absent, and the light instead aligns with a mix of stars with low metallicity, the cluster hypothesis grows stronger.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-clusters-and-star-formation">Early clusters and star formation</h2>



<p>If Earendel is a compact cluster, it may be a direct ancestor of the dense globular cluster populations seen in nearby galaxies today. </p>



<p>The <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.05483" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">modeling</a> points to low heavy element content and intermediate ages, which is the kind of fingerprint expected for early cluster formation. </p>



<p>That scenario would give researchers a rare laboratory for star formation under the harsh conditions of cosmic dawn. </p>



<p>It would show that clusters were already assembling packed stellar systems when the universe was young, and that some survived to the present.</p>



<p>There is also a practical payoff for future surveys that chase extreme magnification. Knowing when a bright, unresolved spot is a cluster rather than a single star helps teams plan follow ups that ask the right questions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earendel-and-cosmic-alignments">Earendel and cosmic alignments</h2>



<p>Rare alignments like the one that revealed Earendel are more than lucky accidents. They allow astronomers to study extremely faint and distant objects at levels of detail that would otherwise be impossible with today’s instruments. </p>



<p>Without gravitational lensing, a source this far away would be invisible even to JWST.</p>



<p>Because these alignments are scarce, each one provides unique insights into the universe’s first billion years. </p>

<p>Astronomers will keep an eye on Earendel’s brightness to probe for microlensing, a telltale flicker that is more pronounced for small sources. </p>



<p>If the light curve stays steadier than expected for a star, that will further support the cluster view.</p>



<p>Additional spectra with higher resolution could isolate faint absorption features that are easier to interpret in a cluster context. </p>



<p>They could also refine the contribution from any cooler <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-star-giant-gas-planet-toi-6894b-breaks-current-planetary-formation-rules/">companions</a> if a star still plays a role.</p>



<p>Either way, the path forward is clear. Better time coverage, sharper spectra, and more lens modeling will push Earendel from a nickname to a well understood object in the early universe.</p>

<p>Yellowstone’s bison are not just big animals grazing grass. They are busy engineers that shape how plants grow, how nutrients flow, and who else can thrive.</p>



<p>Fresh research shows that when these herds move freely, the park’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-may-trigger-rapid-release-of-soil-carbon/">grasslands</a> stay productive and become more nutritious, without losing soil health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bison-grazing-helps-grasslands">Bison grazing helps grasslands</h2>



<p>A research team led by Chris Geremia, a wildlife biologist at the National Park Service, found that grazing bison stabilized plant production while speeding up nitrogen turnover across northern Yellowstone. The team also documented higher plant nitrogen, without a drop in soil carbon.</p>



<p>Between 2015 and 2021, researchers ran field experiments comparing grazed and ungrazed plots. They then scaled up their findings using satellite images and GPS collar tracks to map effects across the migration corridor. </p>



<p>The experts used movable exclosures - simple fenced frames that keep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gene-edited-wheat-turns-soil-microbes-into-fertilizer/">herbivores</a> out - to measure how much plant matter bison consumed and how fast plants regrew.</p>



<p>Collectively, the results revealed a pattern that challenges old grazing rules. Productivity held steady, plant biodiversity rose along the route, and the nutritional quality of grasses improved - even where animals fed heavily.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bison-grazing-boosts-plant-protein">Bison grazing boosts plant protein</h2>



<p>The work focuses on the nitrogen cycle - the movement of nitrogen between plants, animals, soil, and air. The experts report that regrowing plants in heavily grazed patches contain about 150 percent more crude protein than plants in areas without bison.</p>



<p>Soil microbe populations increase after a graze. They quickly recycle organic matter into plant-ready nitrogen, and plants pull that nitrogen back into new tissue. “Just the animals and plants doing their thing,” said Bill Hamilton from Washington and Lee University (<a href="https://www.wlu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WLU</a>).</p>



<p>By mid-summer, this feedback keeps some river valley meadows clipped, dense, and nitrogen rich. Other places remain taller and less grazed, which helps spread different plant types across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-matter-helps-soil-hold-water-even-in-conditions-like-mars/">landscape</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-free-ranging-bison-in-yellowstone">Free-ranging bison in Yellowstone </h2>



<p>Yellowstone is the only place in the lower 48 that has had a free-ranging bison population since prehistoric times. </p>



<p>According to the Park's history, numbers had fallen to about two dozen individuals by 1902. In recent years, however, estimates have ranged roughly from 3,500 to nearly 6,000 animals within and near the park.</p>



<p>Herds gather in river valleys each spring and summer, then shift as seasons change. That movement matters because it spreads grazing pressure in pulses rather than as a constant, even bite.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cultural-significance-of-bison">Cultural significance of bison</h2>



<p>For many Indigenous nations, bison are more than just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-is-losing-nitrogen-along-with-its-climate-fighting-power/">wildlife</a>. They hold spiritual, cultural, and economic significance that stretches back thousands of years. </p>



<p>The return of herds carries meaning that goes far beyond ecology. These communities view the animal’s recovery as a restoration of identity as well as ecosystems.</p>



<p>Partnerships between Indigenous groups and conservationists have already brought bison back to several reservations and protected areas. These initiatives add to a growing collection of evidence that restoration can support both cultural renewal and ecological health.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-keeping-ecosystems-balanced">Keeping ecosystems balanced</h2>



<p>Earlier <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/featured-story/yellowstones-migrating-bison-manipulate-springtime-green" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> showed Yellowstone bison can alter the timing and intensity of spring greening, creating rich patches where new growth keeps coming. </p>



<p>The new study builds on that insight by tying plant chemistry, soil microbes, and herd movement together at landscape scale.</p>



<p>Wet, nutrient rich habitats showed the strongest nutritional boost under heavy grazing, while drier areas saw lighter use and weaker effects. That uneven pattern, called <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41398-020-00986-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heterogeneity</a>, is a feature to keep, not a flaw to fix.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-grazing-aids-climate-resilience">Grazing aids climate resilience</h2>



<p>Ecologists note that large herbivores like bison may also help buffer grasslands against climate variability. </p>



<p>By keeping plants shorter and nutrient rich, bison grazing could support faster regrowth after droughts or extreme weather events. This dynamic may become increasingly valuable as Yellowstone faces hotter summers and shifting precipitation patterns.</p>



<p>At the same time, warming climates could alter migration timing and plant growth cycles. Understanding how bison adapt to these shifts will be critical for long term conservation and for anticipating how ecosystems across the West will respond to environmental change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-lessons-from-yellowstone">Global lessons from Yellowstone</h2>



<p>Similar grazing-driven nutrient cycles have been <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/289484248_The_Gnu's_World_Serengeti_Wildebeest_Ecology_and_Life_History" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">documented</a> in Africa’s Serengeti, where wildebeest herds recovered in the mid 20th century and reshaped entire food webs. Ecologists point to those parallels to show how large, migratory herbivores can restore balance far beyond the boundaries of one park.</p>



<p>Across North America, efforts to return bison to tribal lands and conservation areas are expanding. The Yellowstone study highlights that allowing animals space to move at scale may be just as critical as reintroducing them in the first place.</p>



<p>“With the current large herds of bison, Yellowstone grasslands are functioning better than in their absence,” said Hamilton.</p>



<p>Ultimately, the message is simple: restoring the natural movement and scale of bison allows these large grazers to enhance food quality for countless species without sacrificing carbon storage or overall productivity. </p>



<p>For land managers, the lesson is to aim for flexible goals that respect the ecological limits of each habitat, ensuring both biodiversity and resilience can thrive.</p>

<p>Pain is not just a signal from skin or nerves. It is a decision made by your brain after weighing context, experience, and expectation, and a new study now shows that decision can be tuned to specific body parts.</p>



<p>Researchers found that placebo pain relief does not spread everywhere. It shows up mainly where your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pain-relief-breakthrough-as-scientists-discover-a-safer-non-addictive-approach-trpv1/">brain</a> expects it.</p>



<p>Dr. Lewis S. Crawford of the University of Sydney’s School of Medical Sciences and Brain and Mind Centre (<a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/brain-mind/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BMC</a>) led the work. His team used ultra-high field functional magnetic resonance imaging (<a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3073717/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fMRI</a>) to watch tiny brainstem hubs while people reported their pain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pain-relief-follows-body-map">Pain relief follows body map</h2>



<p>Your brainstem sits between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/virtual-nature-scenes-provide-relief-from-chronic-pain/">brain</a> and the spinal cord and helps regulate breathing, heart rate, and pain control. It routes signals to and from the body and houses chemical systems that set our internal state.</p>



<p>The team found that pain relief followed a spatial pattern. Facial pain relief linked to activity in higher brainstem regions while arm and leg relief tracked lower ones.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trained-spots-show-less-pain">Trained spots show less pain</h2>



<p>Ninety-three healthy volunteers received heat pulses to the face, forearm, or leg. A sham cream labeled as a numbing agent was applied and the heat was quietly turned down during training so the cream seemed to work.</p>



<p>During scanning, the same heat was applied to the sham site and a control site with identical settings. Many people still reported less pain on the trained site, which reflects placebo analgesia.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-pain-feels-emotional-new-brain-pathway-linked-to-suffering/">Response</a> rates differed by location. Significant pain reductions appeared in 49 percent for face, 48 percent for arm, and 61 percent for leg.</p>



<p>Importantly, the relief stayed local. When a hidden cream was placed on a separate body site during scanning, the effect did not generalize to that new spot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brainstem-zones-guide-placebo-signals">Brainstem zones guide placebo signals</h2>



<p>Two brain regions did most of the work, the periaqueductal gray (PAG) and the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM). These areas form a descending control system that can quiet incoming pain signals before they reach conscious awareness.</p>



<p>A recent <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnins.2024.1380171/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> maps how different periaqueductal gray subregions support defensive actions and pain control. The new results fit that picture by showing location-specific changes for face versus limbs.</p>



<p>The periaqueductal gray appears to organize pain relief in a rostral to caudal gradient. The rostral end aligned with face-related relief and the caudal end with body-related relief.</p>



<p>The rostral ventromedial medulla showed a matching pattern. It linked rostral zones to face relief and more caudal zones to limb relief.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-placebo-in-pain-relief">Placebo in pain relief</h2>



<p>The periaqueductal gray has columns that support different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mindfulness-meditation-is-a-powerful-weapon-against-chronic-pain/">strategies</a>. The lateral column is tied to active coping and short-lasting, targeted analgesia, while the ventrolateral column is more associated with whole body opioid-driven analgesia.</p>



<p>This study points to the lateral column when placebo relief is spatially precise. That suggests a different chemistry may be at work than standard opioid circuits.</p>



<p>Cannabinoid signaling is one candidate within the periaqueductal gray. Evidence shows cannabinoids can reduce pain when engaged in this region.</p>



<p>A human and animal <a href="https://journals.lww.com/painrpts/fulltext/2021/01000/effects_of_inflammatory_pain_on_cb1_receptor_in.25.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> summarizes how cannabinoids in the periaqueductal gray influence antinociception and may contribute to descending control.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-expectations-and-placebo-response">Expectations and placebo response </h2>



<p>Expectations set during conditioning shaped the brainstem response. Relief appeared where people believed the cream would help and activity shifted in matching brainstem zones.</p>



<p>Ultra-high field scanning at 7 Tesla MRI made it possible to resolve these small nuclei. That level of detail is rare in human imaging and helped separate face-related and limb-related signals.</p>



<p>The effect was not all-or-nothing. Some participants did not show a measurable placebo response at a given site, which is consistent with known variability in placebo sensitivity.</p>



<p>Those who did respond showed changes in both periaqueductal gray and rostral ventromedial medulla that lined up with the trained body region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-matters-for-patients">Why this matters for patients</h2>



<p>If the brain controls pain with a map, treatment could be tuned to the right spot rather than blasting the whole system. This could reduce side effects and keep people alert and functional.</p>



<p>“This is the first time we’ve seen such a precise and detailed pain map in the human brainstem, showing us that it tailors pain relief to the specific part of the body that’s experiencing it,” said Dr. Crawford.</p>



<p>Opioid medications can quiet pain but often act broadly and carry risks when used long term. According to Dr. Crawford, a map-based approach could guide non-opioid strategies that target the right microcircuit.</p>



<p>“This could lead to more precise treatments for chronic pain that don’t rely on opioids and work exactly where the brain expects pain relief to occur."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-pain-relief-varies-with-placebo">Why pain relief varies with placebo</h2>



<p>Why did almost half of participants fail to show a significant placebo effect at some sites? Individual differences in learning, attention, and expectations likely play roles, along with subtle physiology in the descending system.</p>



<p>A timely <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40875865/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">commentary</a> from the National Library of Medicine notes that identifying somatotopy in brainstem pain modulation could help in the management of chronic pain, where localized symptoms are common.</p>



<p>Researchers also need to determine which neurotransmitters drive the precise mapping. Opioids probably contribute in some circuits, while cannabinoids and other transmitters may shape lateral column effects.</p>



<p>Behavioral training that tunes expectations to match specific sites could enhance clinical results. Devices or medicines might then amplify that targeted control.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-tests-of-placebo-effects">Future tests of placebo effects</h2>



<p>Non-invasive stimulation methods could be tested to nudge the correct brainstem nodes while patients practice site specific expectation training. Imaging could confirm whether the right periaqueductal gray and rostral ventromedial medulla zones are engaged during therapy.</p>



<p>Drug development could also change. If a medicine claims to help a knee or jaw, imaging can check whether the matching brainstem segment lights up as expected.</p>



<p>Clinicians may one day combine modest doses of systemic drugs with local expectation training to get focused relief. The goal is steady function without heavy sedation or widespread side effects.</p>



<p>Patients with chronic, localized pain might benefit most from this approach. They could receive treatment plans that respect the map.</p>



<p>“The brain’s natural pain relief system is more nuanced than we thought,” said Dr Crawford. “Essentially, it has a built-in system to control pain in specific areas. It’s not just turning pain off everywhere; but working in a highly coordinated, anatomically precise system.”     </p>

Placebo pain relief occurs where the brain expects it

<p>Tropical forest loss is not just a story about trees. It is a story about people living next to those trees who are now facing hotter days and higher risks.</p>



<p>A new <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-025-02411-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> reports that local warming from tropical deforestation is associated with 28,330 heat-related deaths per year across Central and South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. </p>



<p>The same analysis estimates that 345 million people were exposed to higher temperatures caused by nearby forest loss between 2001 and 2020.</p>



<p>The research was led by Dr. Carly Reddington and Professor Dominick Spracklen from the University of Leeds’ School of Earth and Environment (<a href="https://environment.leeds.ac.uk/see" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UL</a>). The team worked with collaborators in Brazil and Ghana to connect satellite records of forest change and temperature with public health data. </p>



<p>The work adds a direct human health lens to a topic often framed only as a climate or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-for-biological-diversity-2025-bonding-with-nature/">biodiversity</a> problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-deforestation-raises-heat">How deforestation raises heat</h2>



<p>In simple terms, deforestation means permanent removal of tree cover from an area. The team mapped where tree cover declined and then measured how much land surface temperature rose in those same places.</p>



<p>They compared these deforested pixels to nearby pixels that kept their trees. That method isolates the heat tied to forest loss from broader climate trends.</p>



<p>The researchers overlaid population maps and national data on non-accidental mortality to estimate the share of heat-related mortality linked specifically to the added local heat from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-deforestation-directly-linked-to-atmospheric-mercury-emissions/">deforestation</a>. </p>



<p>The central estimate was 28,330 deaths per year, with the largest numbers in Southeast Asia due to larger exposed populations and higher vulnerability in many districts.</p>



<p>The analysis revealed that deforestation alone added about 0.81 degrees Fahrenheit of warming in deforested areas over 2001 to 2020. In places that lost forest, that local boost accounted for most of the warming people actually experienced.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trees-keep-areas-cool">Trees keep areas cool</h2>



<p>Trees cool the air through evapotranspiration, where water moves from leaves to the atmosphere. This process removes heat, while shade further limits surface warming at midday.</p>



<p>A global <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aac8083" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analysis</a> has shown that when forests are cut, nearby air temperatures rise and daily temperature swings grow larger. When the canopy is lost, the land loses both its source of moisture and its shield from the sun.</p>



<p>The burden is not spread evenly. Regions of Southeast Asia that lost forest had the highest heat-related mortality rates in the new dataset.</p>



<p>Populations working outdoors, living in rural areas, or lacking access to cooling face greater exposure. Health systems with fewer resources also struggle more during heat spikes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heat-related-deaths-from-deforestation">Heat-related deaths from deforestation </h2>



<p>Local case studies back up the pan-tropical picture. In Berau Regency, Indonesia, a modeling study showed that deforestation between 2002 and 2018 raised population-weighted mean temperatures by 1.55°F.</p>



<p>The researchers estimated that 7.3 to 8.5 percent of all-cause deaths in 2018 in Berau were linked to the combined warming from deforestation and climate change. </p>



<p>In the current study, the experts estimate that deforestation alone can account for over a third of heat-related deaths where forest loss occurred.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forest-loss-and-outdoor-work">Forest loss and outdoor work </h2>



<p>Heat does not just affect mortality. It also limits safe time for labor, especially in agriculture and construction.</p>



<p>Independent research shows that deforestation-driven warming reduced safe outdoor working hours for about 2.8 million workers across the tropics in recent years. </p>



<p>Lost work time means lost income, and it increases health risks for those who continue laboring in dangerous conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-impact-of-deforestation">Local impact of deforestation</h2>



<p>We often talk about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-lagging-centuries-behind-in-climate-adaptation/">forests</a> as carbon stores. That is true, but the cooling services that trees provide to neighboring communities are immediate and local.</p>



<p>The Leeds study shows that in areas with forest losses, local biophysical warming from deforestation explained most of the temperature rise that residents felt. </p>



<p>This explains why people living near cleared land notice sharper heat compared to those located a short distance away near intact forest.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deforestation-adds-to-global-heat">Deforestation adds to global heat</h2>



<p>Heat is already a leading environmental risk for health worldwide. A global <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196%2821%2900081-4/fulltext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> estimated that non-optimal temperatures were associated with about 5.08 million deaths per year from 2000 to 2019.</p>



<p>Deforestation adds fuel to that fire by removing local cooling in some of the hottest, most humid places on Earth. It does so alongside rising greenhouse gases that are lifting baseline temperatures.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-actions-to-protect-people">Actions to protect people </h2>



<p>Stopping further loss of tropical forests can quickly lower local <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-heat-is-pushing-parts-of-earth-beyond-human-survival/">heat stress</a>. Keeping canopy intact restores shade and evapotranspiration, which cools surfaces and the air above them.</p>



<p>At the same time, communities need basic protections, including shade structures, water, rest breaks, and early warning for dangerous heat. Where possible, improving access to efficient cooling can protect health while limiting extra emissions.</p>
