<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency features a dazzling view of the globular cluster NGC 1786, which was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Unlike open <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trio-of-star-clusters-may-be-the-same-system-at-different-ages/">clusters</a>, which are younger and more loosely arranged, globular clusters are tightly concentrated and typically located in a galaxy’s halo.</p>



<p>The globular cluster NGC 1786 is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) - a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way about 160,000 light-years from Earth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“NGC 1786 itself is in the constellation Dorado. It was discovered in the year 1835 by John Herschel,” noted <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images">ESA</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-globular-clusters-nbsp">Observing globular clusters&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Globular clusters are densely packed, spherical groups of stars that orbit the cores of galaxies like satellites.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Each cluster can contain tens of thousands to millions of stars, all bound tightly together by gravity. These stars are generally very old - often over 10 billion years - making globular clusters some of the oldest known structures in the universe.</p>



<p>The image of NGC 1786 is part of a broader observing program aimed at comparing old globular clusters in nearby dwarf galaxies with those found in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/milky-way-galaxy-may-be-inside-a-giant-void-in-the-universe-explains-hubble-tension/">Milky Way</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Our galaxy contains over 150 of these old, spherical collections of tightly-bound stars, which have been studied in depth - especially with Hubble Space Telescope images like this one, which show them in previously-unattainable detail,” said ESA.</p>



<p>“Being very stable and long-lived, they act as galactic time capsules, preserving stars from the earliest stages of a galaxy’s formation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stars-in-globular-clusters">Stars in globular clusters</h2>



<p>For many years, astronomers believed that the stars in globular clusters all formed at roughly the same time. However, studies of Milky Way clusters have revealed multiple <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zhulong-spiral-galaxy-like-milky-way-discovered-at-edge-of-universe-should-not-exist/">stellar populations</a> of different ages.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To better understand how globular clusters form - and how they can be used to trace galactic evolution - researchers are now investigating whether clusters like NGC 1786 in external galaxies also show signs of multiple stellar generations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This research sheds light on the origins and development of the Large Magellanic Cloud. It also helps scientists study the formation history of the Milky Way itself.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-large-magellanic-cloud-nbsp">Large Magellanic Cloud&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is one of the most prominent and intriguing galaxies in our cosmic neighborhood. It is the largest satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and is visible to the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dozens-of-ghost-galaxies-may-be-orbiting-the-milky-way/">satellite galaxy</a> is a smaller galaxy that orbits a larger one due to gravitational attraction. Just as the Moon orbits the Earth, satellite galaxies are bound to larger galaxies and can slowly orbit them over billions of years. </p>



<p>These satellites can range in size from relatively massive dwarf galaxies to tiny, faint collections of stars.</p>



<p>Though classified as a dwarf galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud spans roughly 14,000 light-years across and contains billions of stars, nebulae, and star clusters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One of its most famous features is the Tarantula Nebula - the most active star-forming region in the entire Local Group of galaxies. This stellar nursery is so intense that it's forming some of the most massive stars ever observed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dynamic-interaction-with-the-milky-way-nbsp">Dynamic interaction with the Milky Way&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The Large Magellanic Cloud is also of great interest to astronomers because of its dynamic relationship with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-solar-systems-journey-through-the-milky-way-may-have-altered-earths-climate/">Milky Way</a>. It’s not just a passive companion - it’s interacting gravitationally with both the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Cloud, another nearby dwarf galaxy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These interactions have created long streams of gas, such as the Magellanic Stream, that arc across the sky. In fact, recent studies suggest the Large Magellanic Cloud may be on its first infall into the Milky Way’s halo, rather than orbiting it for billions of years as once thought.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This motion could have significant effects on the structure of our galaxy, possibly even perturbing the Milky Way’s dark matter halo.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-research">Significance of the research </h2>



<p>The detailed observations of NGC 1786 not only showcase the stunning capabilities of the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/hubble/">Hubble Space Telescope</a> but also deepen our understanding of how galaxies like the Milky Way and the LMC evolve over time.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By examining ancient globular clusters in both the Milky Way and its neighboring galaxies, astronomers are uncovering vital clues about star formation and the processes that shaped our universe.</p>

Glittering time capsule: Hubble peers into a galaxy's past

<p>Today’s Image of the Day from the European Space Agency features an incredible phenomenon that was captured on the far outskirts of the Milky Way.</p>



<p>A young, massive star has announced its arrival with a dramatic display. It has fired off twin <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/webb-captures-a-young-stars-jet-colliding-with-space-dust/">jets</a> of gas so powerful they stretch across eight light-years - about twice the distance from our Sun to the Alpha Centauri system.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These streams are confined to narrow beams by the star’s magnetic fields and launched along its spin axis.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-jets-of-a-young-star">The jets of a young star</h2>



<p>The James Webb Space Telescope captured the event in exquisite infrared detail, showing the jets carving their way through interstellar gas and dust.</p>



<p>The stellar outburst belongs to a rare class of cosmic displays known as Herbig-Haro objects. They form when material falling onto a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-star-wsb-52-fires-an-explosive-jet-that-crashed-back-into-its-own-planetary-disk/">newborn star</a> is shot back out into space at incredible speeds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The star at the heart of this spectacle lies in a cluster about 15,000 light-years away. The star has a mass that is already ten times greater than the Sun’s.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The outflow is hurtling through space at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, leaving behind a trail that astronomers can now study as a record of the star’s growth.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unexpected-discovery">An unexpected discovery</h2>



<p>The discovery took astronomers by surprise, including Yu Cheng of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (<a href="https://www.nao.ac.jp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NAOJ</a>). </p>



<p>“We didn’t really know there was a massive star with this kind of super-jet out there before the observation. Such a spectacular outflow of molecular hydrogen from a massive star is rare in other regions of our galaxy,” said Cheng.&nbsp;</p>



<p>More than 300 Herbig-Haro objects are known, but most of them come from stars much smaller than this one. Webb’s sharp images reveal not just the scale but also the delicate structure of this jet, including knots, shocks, and filaments where the stream slams into surrounding material.</p>



<p>“I was really surprised at the order, symmetry, and size of the jet when we first looked at it,” said Jonathan Tan of the <a href="https://www.virginia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Virginia</a>.</p>



<p>The perfect alignment of the opposite streams suggests the process fueling this star’s growth has been steady for more than 100,000 years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mystery-of-massive-star-formation-nbsp">Mystery of massive star formation&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The new <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2025/09/Immense_stellar_jet_in_Milky_Way_outskirts#msdynmkt_trackingcontext=0ad1e29a-3bb6-4b03-99c0-1f5c2ba20000" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observation</a> has reopened one of the longest-running debates in astronomy: how do massive stars form? For decades, scientists have been split between two main ideas. </p>



<p>One theory suggests that stars this large form through a steady process called core accretion, where gas builds up in a stable disk and launches outflows in predictable directions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The other theory, known as competitive accretion, involves a chaotic tug-of-war in which streams of gas fall in from all sides, twisting the orientation of the jets.</p>



<p>The Webb data now tilt the balance toward the first explanation. The opposing jets are nearly 180 degrees apart, showing that the central disk has remained steady throughout the star’s lifetime.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“What we’ve seen here, because we’ve got the whole history - a tapestry of the story - is that the opposite sides of the jets are nearly 180 degrees apart from each other. That tells us that this central disc is held steady and validates a prediction of the core accretion theory,” said Tan.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conditions-of-the-early-universe-nbsp">Conditions of the early universe&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The star’s home lies in a cluster called Sharpless 2-284, a relatively pristine region on the galaxy’s periphery. Because it is far from the Milky Way’s busy center, its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-universes-first-molecule-helped-ignite-the-stars/">stars formed</a> in an environment low in heavy elements.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Astronomers call this property metallicity, and it mirrors the conditions of the early universe, before multiple generations of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-discovery-twin-stars-with-parallel-disks-and-jets/">stars</a> had enriched space with the products of nuclear fusion.</p>



<p>“Webb’s exquisite data have also shown us that relatively more stars seem to form at lower masses in Sh2-284 than in closer, more metal-rich clusters. This cluster is an excellent region to help us understand star formation throughout the Universe,” said Morten Andersen of the <a href="https://www.eso.org/public/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Southern Observatory</a>.</p>

Young star lights up the Milky Way with colossal jets

<p>Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features a dramatic view of dust sweeping across the Tarim Basin in western China - one of the dustiest places on Earth. </p>



<p>Spring and summer usually grab the headlines for dust activity, but that doesn’t mean the skies clear in the other months. <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/154772/dust-in-the-eye-of-the-tarim-basin" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Satellite data</a> and ground observations show that autumn brings its share of haze too. </p>



<p>Known for its unusual eye-like shape, the Tarim Basin is surrounded by mountains that often trap dust inside. This natural barrier keeps the fine particles from traveling far beyond the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-from-africa-sparked-a-massive-phytoplankton-bloom/">desert</a> floor, creating persistent hazy conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-landscape-shaped-by-tectonic-power">A landscape shaped by tectonic power</h2>



<p>Look north and the “eyebrow” of the Tarim reveals striking ridges running east to west. These aren’t ordinary hills but part of the Kuqa fold-and-thrust belt.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Millions of years of tectonic forces pushed the Tarim Basin against its mountainous neighbors to the north, squeezing rock layers until they buckled and folded. The result is a series of wave-like formations called anticlines and synclines.</p>



<p>Over time, erosion has carved into these ridges, peeling back layers of red and green sandstones and pale limestones. From above, these colorful stripes stand out sharply against the muted tones of the desert around them.&nbsp;</p>



<p><a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/154126/a-curtain-of-dust-over-the-tarim-basin" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Landsat images</a> have captured the intricate detail of this fractured geology, offering a glimpse into the dynamic forces that continue to shape the region.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-counting-the-dusty-days">Counting the dusty days</h2>



<p>Scientists studied more than 30 years of satellite records and found that the Tarim Basin averaged 60 dusty days a year. The month of September typically saw seven.&nbsp;</p>



<p>About 85 percent of those days fell into a category called “floating dust.” On such days, winds were light but visibility dropped below six miles as particles lingered in the air.</p>



<p>The rest of the time, conditions were harsher. On “blowing dust” days, moderate winds reduced visibility to less than three miles. The most extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-storms-are-a-surprising-source-of-deadly-air-pollution/">dust storms</a> cut visibility to under half a mile, carried by powerful gusts that scoured the landscape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dust-size-tells-a-seasonal-story">Dust size tells a seasonal story</h2>



<p>Not all dust is the same. By comparing seasons, researchers found that larger particles show up most often in spring, fall, and winter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>NASA’s Terra satellite, using its Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer, provided the detail. These coarse grains likely lift when strong horizontal winds sweep across the desert.</p>



<p>Summer is different. Rising heat drives localized convection, creating dust whirls - sometimes called dust devils - that pull smaller, finer grains into the air.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These swirling columns may look less threatening than a full storm, but they can still loft material high into the atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The seasonal contrast shows how different forces, from heat to wind, work together to keep the basin’s air loaded with dust.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dust-from-the-tarim-basin-nbsp">Dust from the Tarim Basin&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dust from the Tarim Basin doesn’t just linger over western China. Depending on weather patterns, it can drift across Asia, impacting air quality in major cities. In extreme cases, it may even cross <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atmospheric-dust-plays-surprisingly-crucial-role-in-stabilizing-ocean-ecosystems/">oceans</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These particles influence more than visibility. They affect climate by reflecting sunlight or trapping heat, and they alter ecosystems when they settle far from their source.</p>



<p>Understanding when and how dust moves is key for both health and climate research. The Tarim Basin offers a natural laboratory where scientists can track these processes in detail, thanks to decades of satellite coverage and on-the-ground measurements.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-reminder-of-nature-s-reach">A reminder of nature’s reach</h2>



<p>The desert may seem remote, but its restless skies have a global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dust-is-an-understudied-contributor-to-climate-change/">footprint</a>. What satellites recorded in early September was just one episode in a cycle that repeats year after year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Tectonic history, seasonal winds, and rising heat all converge in this basin to keep the air in motion.&nbsp;</p>



<p>For scientists, the Tarim continues to show how landscapes that appear still and silent are, in fact, alive with change.</p>

China’s Tarim Basin: A desert that never sleeps

<p>Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features Hurricane Kiko, spinning west across the Pacific Ocean toward the Hawaiian Islands.</p>



<p>Hurricane Kiko began as a tropical depression on August 31 in the eastern Pacific. Within days, it rapidly gained strength and climbed into major <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-amplified-hurricane-strength/">hurricane</a> status. By early September, it was heading west with Hawaii in its path - raising concerns about what the islands might face.</p>



<p>The storm’s approach forced Hawaii to prepare for high surf, rip currents, and shifting forecasts. While the cyclone weakened as it neared land, the ocean did not quiet down, and warnings were issued for dangerous conditions along east-facing shores.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calm-beginnings-to-furious-winds">Calm beginnings to furious winds</h2>



<p>Kiko’s early days followed the typical pattern of many Pacific hurricanes. Warm waters and unstable atmospheric conditions fueled its rise from depression to named storm, and then to hurricane.&nbsp;</p>



<p>At its peak, Kiko wavered between Category 3 and Category 4 strength. On September 4, its sustained winds reached 145 miles per hour, enough to rank it among the most powerful storms of the season.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-kiko-from-space">Observing Kiko from space</h2>



<p>On September 7 at about 1:30 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time, satellites offered a clear view of the storm.</p>



<p>Today’s featured <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/154769/hurricane-kiko-nears-hawaii" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">image</a> reveals a vast spiral with a defined center. At this time, it was a Category 2 system with winds of 110 miles per hour. </p>



<p>The photo was captured by instruments aboard the Suomi NPP satellite when Hurricane Kiko was about 600 miles east of Hilo. </p>



<p>These satellite snapshots are crucial for monitoring storm size, cloud structure, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-causes-the-rapid-intensification-of-hurricanes/">intensity</a>. They help forecasters understand how the cyclone is evolving as it moves across the ocean.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-the-storm-weakened">Why the storm weakened</h2>



<p>Hurricanes thrive on warm water and favorable atmospheric conditions. But Kiko encountered hurdles that sapped its energy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The National Hurricane Center noted that cooler water played a role in its decline. In addition, moderate vertical wind shear - the shifting of wind direction and speed with altitude - disrupted the storm’s internal structure. A dry surrounding environment further limited the fuel supply.</p>



<p>All of these factors caused Kiko to lose some of its punch as it pushed closer to Hawaii. Even so, the system remained large enough to stir up trouble in the seas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hurricane-kiko-forecasts">Hurricane Kiko forecasts</h2>



<p>As of September 8, meteorologists expected Kiko to veer northwest, weaken to a tropical storm, and pass north of the Hawaiian Islands on September 9 and 10.&nbsp;</p>



<p>That track suggested the islands might avoid damaging winds and widespread heavy rainfall. But not every hazard depends on direct landfall.</p>



<p>The National Hurricane Center warned that east-facing coastal areas could see dangerous surf and rip currents. These hazards often linger long after the storm’s eye has passed, and they pose risks to swimmers, boaters, and anyone near the shoreline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hawaii-s-storm-history">Hawaii’s storm history</h2>



<p>Hawaii sits in the middle of the Pacific, far from continental landmasses but not immune to tropical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-weak-storms-are-deadly-for-infants-in-developing-nations/">cyclones</a>. While direct hits are rare, the islands have experienced damaging storms in the past.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Hurricane Iniki in 1992 was the strongest to strike Hawaii in recorded history, causing widespread destruction on Kauai. More recently, storms like Lane in 2018 and Douglas in 2020 skirted the islands but still produced heavy rains and flooding.</p>



<p>Kiko fits into this long-running narrative: powerful systems often threaten Hawaii, and even near misses bring serious impacts. For residents and visitors alike, the warnings serve as reminders of the Pacific’s power.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-the-next-storm">Preparing for the next storm</h2>



<p>Forecasting has improved in recent decades thanks to satellite technology, advanced computer models, and constant monitoring by meteorologists.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These tools give island communities more time to prepare for changing conditions. Emergency managers urge residents to take <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-hurricane-warnings-fail-to-convey-the-real-danger/">warnings</a> seriously, even if the storm’s center never crosses land.</p>



<p>High surf alone can be life-threatening, and rip currents claim lives every year. For island states like Hawaii, where the ocean defines daily life, respecting these warnings is vital.</p>

Hurricane Kiko spins toward Hawaii 

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency showcases the striking beauty of the planetary nebula NGC 2899, which resembles a moth in flight. The photo was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.</p>



<p>“The planetary nebula NGC 2899 is shaped like a single macaroni noodle, with its edges pointed up, but its edge-on central torus is semi-transparent in the middle,” noted <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>.</p>



<p>“The top and bottom edges are thick and orange. The center is semi-transparent blue and green. The wider central region looks roughly like a moth, also filled with semi-transparent blue and green.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-defining-features-of-the-planetary-nebula">Defining features of the planetary nebula</h2>



<p>According to ESA, the nebula features a bipolar, cylindrical outflow of gas extending diagonally. The gas is driven by intense radiation and stellar winds from a central <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/white-dwarf-planets-are-more-habitable-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">white dwarf</a> with a scorching temperature of nearly 22,000 degrees Celsius. </p>



<p>“In fact, there may be two companion stars that are interacting and sculpting the nebula, which is pinched in the middle by a fragmented ring or torus - looking like a half-eaten donut,” said ESA.</p>



<p>Streams of gaseous “pillars” extend outward, all pointing back toward the central source of energy. The vibrant colors in the image come from glowing hydrogen and oxygen gases.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discovery-and-significance-of-ngc-2899">Discovery and significance of NGC 2899</h2>



<p>NGC 2899 was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel on March 2, 1835, during his survey of the southern skies from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. </p>



<p>Herschel cataloged many deep-sky objects in the southern hemisphere, contributing significantly to the New General Catalogue (NGC) compiled later by John Louis Emil Dreyer.</p>



<p>NGC 2899 is located approximately 4,500 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Vela, which is part of the larger Vela-Puppis-Carina region of the Milky Way known for its rich <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fluffy-molecular-clouds-may-change-our-understanding-of-star-formation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">star-forming activity</a> and remnants of past stellar explosions.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Vela, whose name means "sails" in Latin, represents the sails of the ancient Greek mythological ship Argo Navis. This region of the sky is particularly abundant in nebulae, star clusters, and other deep-sky objects, making it a focal point for astronomical observations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The nebula’s distance places it well within our galaxy, offering astronomers a valuable glimpse into the later stages of stellar evolution and the processes that sculpt and illuminate planetary nebulae.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-a-planetary-nebula">What is a planetary nebula?</h2>



<p>Nebulae are vast clouds of gas and dust in space, often serving as the birthplaces or remnants of stars.&nbsp;</p>



<p>They come in various types, including emission nebulae that glow due to ionized gases energized by nearby stars, reflection nebulae that shine by scattering starlight, and dark nebulae that obscure light from background <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/runaway-star-may-be-dragging-a-planet-along-with-it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stars</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Planetary nebulae form when dying stars shed their outer layers, creating colorful, often symmetrical shapes. Nebulae can span light-years across and are key to understanding the life cycles of stars and the structure of galaxies.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-fate-of-dying-stars">The fate of dying stars</h2>



<p>Not all dying stars become planetary nebulae. In fact, stars much more massive than the Sun follow a very different and far more violent path.&nbsp;</p>



<p>These massive stars end their lives in dramatic supernova explosions, releasing tremendous energy and scattering heavy elements into space, which enriches the interstellar medium.&nbsp;</p>



<p>What remains after the explosion depends on the star’s mass. The collapsed core can form a neutron star - an incredibly dense object composed mostly of neutrons. Or, if the star was even more massive, it may create a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-confirm-lone-black-hole-wandering-through-our-galaxy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">black hole</a>, where gravity is so intense that not even light can escape.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-examples-of-winged-nebulae-nbsp">Examples of “winged” nebulae&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Several well-known nebulae are noted for their "winged" or symmetrical, wing-like appearances, often earning them evocative nicknames.&nbsp;</p>



<p>One of the most famous is the Butterfly Nebula, located in the constellation Scorpius. This planetary <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dragons-egg-nebula-is-a-truly-stunning-sight-to-behold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nebula</a> displays two expansive lobes that resemble butterfly wings, shaped by fast stellar winds from a dying star.</p>



<p>The Omega Nebula (also known as the Swan Nebula) in the constellation Sagittarius is a bright star-forming region that has been said to resemble a swan in flight. It has broad, glowing "wings" formed by clouds of ionized hydrogen gas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Similarly, the Eagle Nebula has an overall shape reminiscent of a bird with outstretched wings, which inspired its name. It is located in the constellation Serpens and home to the iconic "Pillars of Creation."</p>

Planetary nebula with ethereal wings captured by Hubble

<p>Today's <strong>Image of the Day</strong> from the European Space Agency features NGC 5335 - a barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo. </p>



<p>The photo was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. According to <a href="https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2025/04/Barred_Spiral_Galaxy_NGC_5335" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESA</a>, thousands of distant galaxies are speckled throughout the image in a variety of colors.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Hubble is revealing how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-galaxies-discovery-would-upend-current-understanding-of-universe/">galaxies</a> form, grow, and evolve over cosmic time by capturing detailed images of galaxies at various stages of development, from the nearby universe to billions of light-years away.</p>



<p>Hubble images have shown us that galaxies collide and merge, that star formation varies across different types of galaxies, and that supermassive black holes often lie at their centers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-ngc-5335">Studying NGC 5335</h2>



<p>The galaxy NGC 5335 lies approximately 160 million light-years from Earth. It is classified as an SB(s)bc type galaxy, indicating a well-defined bar structure across its center. </p>



<p>Like many galaxies of its type, NGC 5335 features active <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/star-formation-reignited-in-the-galaxy-leo-p-after-billions-of-years/">star formation</a>, especially in its spiral arms, where interstellar gas and dust provide the raw material for new stars. </p>



<p>Observations in different wavelengths, including infrared and ultraviolet, help astronomers study the galaxy’s stellar population and the dynamics of its central bar.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hubble-s-view-of-the-spiral-galaxy-nbsp">Hubble’s view of the spiral galaxy&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“NGC 5335 is categorized as a flocculent spiral galaxy with patchy streamers of star formation across its disk. There is a striking lack of well-defined spiral arms that are commonly found among galaxies, including our Milky Way,” noted ESA.</p>



<p>“A notable bar structure slices across the center of the galaxy. The bar channels gas inwards toward the galactic center, fueling star formation.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Such bars are dynamic in galaxies and may come and go over two-billion-year intervals. They appear in about 30 percent of observed galaxies, including our Milky Way.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-galactic-bar-in-the-milky-way-nbsp">Galactic bar in the Milky Way&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The bar in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-found-something-strange-at-core-of-milky-way-galaxy-webb-meerkat/">Milky Way</a> is a vast, elongated structure composed mostly of stars, stretching across the galaxy’s central region. It is a key feature of our galaxy’s architecture, spanning about 27,000 light-years and oriented at an angle relative to the galaxy’s spiral arms. </p>



<p>Astronomers believe the bar plays a crucial role in the dynamics and evolution of the Milky Way by funneling gas inward toward the galactic center. This can feed star formation and fuel the supermassive black hole at the core.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The bar is thought to have formed from instabilities in the galactic disk and continues to influence the motion of stars and the overall gravitational balance of the galaxy.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Observations in infrared and radio wavelengths, which can pierce through the dust in the galactic plane, have helped scientists map the bar’s size, shape, and orientation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-constellation-virgo-nbsp">The constellation Virgo&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Virgo is one of the most prominent and well-known constellations in the night sky, both astronomically and mythologically. It is the second-largest constellation by area and lies along the zodiac, making it one of the twelve constellations through which the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/team-creates-video-showing-the-sun-in-gamma-rays-over-a-14-year-period/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sun</a> appears to move during the year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Virgo is most visible in the evening sky in the Northern Hemisphere during spring, particularly in April and May. Its name means “virgin” in Latin.</p>



<p>Virgo is traditionally associated with various fertility and agriculture goddesses across different cultures, including the Greek goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, as well as the Roman goddess Ceres.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In some myths, Virgo represents Astraea, the virgin goddess of justice who fled to the heavens during the corruption of mankind.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-astronomical-significance-of-virgo">Astronomical significance of Virgo</h2>



<p>Astronomically, Virgo is situated between Leo to the west and Libra to the east. One of its most notable stars is Spica, the brightest star in Virgo and one of the brightest in the night sky.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Spica is a blue-white giant, located approximately 250 light-years from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/was-early-earth-a-purple-planet-scientists-say-its-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>. It has been important for navigation and agriculture for centuries, marking planting and harvest times in ancient calendars.</p>



<p>Virgo is also of great interest to astronomers because it hosts the Virgo Cluster, a massive cluster of galaxies about 65 million light-years away.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This cluster contains more than 1,000 galaxies, and it's part of the larger Virgo Supercluster, which also includes our own Local Group of galaxies. This makes Virgo a key area for studying large-scale structures in the universe.</p>

Spiral galaxy glows in the constellation Virgo

<p>More than 85 climate scientists filed a detailed rebuttal to a Department of Energy (DOE) report that downplays climate risks. The response argues the document misrepresents research and inflates uncertainty in ways that could mislead policy.</p>



<p>The stakes are high because the Environmental Protection Agency (<a href="https://www.epa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPA</a>) is weighing a rollback of the 2009 endangerment finding and has referenced the DOE <a href="https://sites.google.com/tamu.edu/doeresponse/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>. If finalized, that move could reshape rules for vehicles, power plants, and oil and gas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-report-disputed">Climate report disputed</h2>



<p>DOE released its <a href="https://www.energy.gov/sites/default/files/2025-07/DOE_Critical_Review_of_Impacts_of_GHG_Emissions_on_the_US_Climate_July_2025.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, written by five authors known for contrarian views. The agency opened a public comment period and framed the document as a synthesis for decision makers.</p>



<p>Days later, EPA issued a <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-releases-proposal-rescind-obama-era-endangerment-finding-regulations-paved-way" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">proposal</a> to rescind the endangerment finding, and cited the DOE study as part of its justification. That connection turned a technical dispute into a live regulatory fight.</p>



<p>Led by <a href="https://artsci.tamu.edu/atmos-science/contact/profiles/andrew-dessler.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Andrew Dessler</a> of Texas A&amp;M University, the reviewers set out to provide a public, point by point critique. They aimed to show where claims diverge from the broader peer reviewed literature.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-rebuttal-came-together">How the rebuttal came together</h2>



<p>The reviewer group consisted of more than 85 experts and produced a public review exceeding 400 pages. </p>



<p>They coordinated quickly to prevent errors from hardening into official guidance. They compared each disputed claim with the underlying papers and flagged omissions or misreadings. </p>



<p>"This report makes a mockery of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-will-climate-change-hit-hardest-global-index-reveals-vulnerability/">science</a>," stated Dessler. The submitted document also challenges the report’s portrayal of benefits from carbon dioxide and its treatment of extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-forests-helps-birds-and-humans-in-many-ways/">weather</a>.</p>



<p>The authors call out selective citation, heavy emphasis on uncertainty, and errors in statistics. They argue that several sections omit recent results on sea level rise and heat extremes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experts-review-climate-report">Experts review climate report</h2>



<p>The American Meteorological Society (<a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMS</a>) issued a formal <a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/about-ams/ams-statements/statements-of-the-ams-in-force/the-practice-and-assessment-of-science-five-foundational-flaws-in-the-department-of-energys-2025-climate-report/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">statement</a> identifying five foundational flaws in the DOE report. The society said a small, non representative author group cannot credibly assess the breadth of evidence.</p>



<p>"Each of these flaws, alone, places the report at odds with scientific principles and practices," said the AMS. The statement points to cherry picking and extrapolations that do not follow from comprehensive consideration of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-wins-in-2025-came-from-unexpected-places/">science</a>.</p>



<p>Major assessments, like the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IPCC</a> and the <a href="https://toolkit.climate.gov/NCA5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Climate Assessment</a>, synthesize hundreds of studies across disciplines. That process builds consensus by weighing all the evidence, not a narrow slice of it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-record-on-sea-level-and-risk">Record on sea level and risk</h2>



<p>Sea level along the U.S. coast is projected to rise about 10 to 12 inches by 2050, according to a 2022 NOAA <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/news-release/us-coastline-to-see-up-to-foot-of-sea-level-rise-by-2050" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>. </p>



<p>That amount would roughly match the increase of the prior century and would raise the frequency of damaging coastal floods.</p>



<p>These projections rest on tide gauges, satellite measurements, and climate models, plus physics based understanding of melting land ice. </p>



<p>They also account for regional differences caused by land motion and ocean circulation.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-not-adapting-fast-enough-to-climate-change/">Communities</a> will face higher baseline water levels that make storms more destructive. Ports, bases, and neighborhoods will need plans that fit this trajectory, not assumptions that minimize it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-track-record-of-climate-models">Track record of climate models</h2>



<p>A 2020 peer reviewed <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2019GL085378" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> compared decades of historical model projections with observed global temperatures. It found the models were generally accurate once evaluated against the emissions that actually occurred.</p>



<p>That result speaks directly to claims that models exaggerate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-is-just-three-years-away-from-dangerous-carbon-milestone/">warming</a>. While uncertainties remain about regional details, the physics behind greenhouse gas warming has performed well in retrospective tests.</p>



<p>Confidence in the big picture rests on measurements and skill tests, not on selective charts. When models are checked against reality, they give policymakers usable signals about risk.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-report-shapes-policy">Climate report shapes policy</h2>



<p>EPA’s move puts the DOE document into the legal record, where it could influence standards for vehicles, power plants, and industrial sources. </p>



<p>Public comments, independent reviews, and court scrutiny will determine how much weight it carries.</p>



<p>For people outside Washington, the practical question is whether rules align with what the evidence shows. Health and infrastructure decisions depend on accurate readings of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wealthy-elite-responsible-for-majority-of-global-climate-warming/">heat</a>, rainfall, and sea level rise trends.</p>



<p>Scientists are not asking for certainty, only for decisions rooted in well established measurements and validated methods. Studies that test past <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-are-lagging-centuries-behind-in-climate-adaptation/">projections</a> against outcomes help keep those decisions on solid ground.</p>

Over 85 environmental scientists claim the US government's new climate report is 'misleading'

More than 85 climate scientists filed a detailed rebuttal to...

<p>When people imagine grasslands, they often picture bison herds stretching to the horizon. These giant animals once ruled the Great Plains, shaping the land with their grazing. But size is not everything.</p>



<p>A new study shows that the smallest herbivores, prairie dogs and grasshoppers, do more for nutrient cycling than the mighty bison or cattle.</p>



<p>The research, led&nbsp;by scientists from the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (<a href="https://nationalzoo.si.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NZCBI</a>), reveals a surprising truth. The tiniest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grasslands-are-racing-to-adapt-to-climate-shifts/">animals</a> can have the biggest impact on how nutrients move through grassland soil and plants.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-grasslands-matter">Why grasslands matter</h2>



<p>Grasslands cover 40 percent of Earth’s land. They store carbon, protect soil, and support biodiversity. Yet they remain among the planet’s most threatened ecosystems.</p>



<p>Farming and ranching have taken over large areas. Development has carved up habitats and replaced native grasses with crops or invasive plants. The result is fragile soil, fewer species, and land that struggles to recover after droughts or fires.</p>



<p>In North America, the Great Plains once stretched endlessly. Bison herds darkened the horizon. Prairie dogs dug their towns across vast distances. Today, those numbers have collapsed. Both species survive at just one or two percent of their former abundance. </p>



<p>This loss changed how the grasslands <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grasslands-crucial-role-global-agriculture-environment-ecosystems/">function</a>. Without constant grazing or burrowing, the soil misses some of the recycling and mixing it once relied on. Plants grow differently. Nutrients move more slowly. The system no longer works the same.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-which-animals-support-grasslands">Which animals support grasslands?</h2>



<p>To see what remains, the researchers focused on northeast Montana. This region still holds stretches of shortgrass prairie. It also shows how people use the land in many ways. </p>



<p>Some areas are set aside for conservation. Others support ranching or crop farming. Together, they form a patchwork landscape. That mix gave scientists a chance to study real conditions rather than isolated sites. </p>



<p>The team selected 15 locations. By comparing them, the researchers could see how herbivores - from prairie dogs to cattle - shape soil and grass today.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-green-food-web">The green food web</h2>



<p>“Herbivores contribute to the green food web by turning plant tissues into urine and dung that provide new plant growth with readily available nutrients,” said Ellen Welti, NZCBI community ecologist and the study’s senior author. </p>



<p>“This cycles nutrients at a faster rate than the brown food web, where plant tissues slowly senesce and degrade before nutrients become available for uptake by future plants.”</p>



<p>The cycle is faster and more direct when small animals do the work. Prairie dogs and grasshoppers, in particular, push nutrients back into the soil quickly, changing the landscape in ways the larger grazers do not.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-prairie-dogs-have-a-big-influence">Prairie dogs have a big influence </h2>



<p>Prairie dogs had the biggest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/restored-grasslands-bring-more-peace-to-africa/">influence</a>. Their colonies held higher levels of carbon and nitrogen in the soil than surrounding grasslands. </p>



<p>Their burrows moved nutrients deeper into the ground, while their waste enriched plants with nitrogen, potassium, and magnesium.</p>



<p>These animals don’t just nibble on grass. By digging, depositing, and living in dense groups, they create hot spots of fertility. The land around a prairie dog town becomes richer and more productive than areas without them.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-animals-that-shape-grasslands">Tiny animals that shape grasslands</h2>



<p>Grasshoppers also left their mark. Their feeding increased phosphorus in the soil, an essential nutrient for plant growth. But they also shaped the rhythm of the prairie. Plant biomass peaked in mid-summer, then declined sharply. That pattern lined up with the grasshopper life cycle.</p>



<p>Nymphs hatched in spring, barely eating at first. By late summer, they had grown into hungry adults, devouring plants at a much higher rate. </p>



<p>Bison and cattle grazed more steadily through the season, but grasshoppers created these dramatic seasonal swings - influencing not only plant growth but also food availability for other prairie species.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-interactions-that-matter">Interactions that matter</h2>



<p>“This study shows there are many different interactions occurring between herbivores and the greater grassland ecosystem,” said Julie Rebh, the study’s lead author who conducted the research as an intern at NZCBI. </p>



<p>“While the presence of some smaller herbivores such as prairie dogs and grasshoppers may not be as obvious, the impact they have on grassland ecology is considerable.”</p>



<p>The research makes one point clear: ecosystems rely on many actors, not just the most visible ones. Big animals shape the landscape in one way, but the smallest can speed up cycles and create pockets of fertility that keep the system running.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-broader-view-of-healthy-grasslands">A broader view of healthy grasslands </h2>



<p>Conservation often centers on iconic species like bison. But this study argues for a more complete approach. </p>



<p>Prairie dogs and grasshoppers may not inspire awe, but they keep nutrients flowing. Without them, grasslands risk losing part of their engine.</p>



<p>Healthy grasslands need both large grazers and small recyclers. Together they keep soil, plants, and animals in balance. Protecting them protects the whole system. It also ensures resilience, biodiversity, and survival under pressure.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecy.70192" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Ecology</em></a>.</p>

<p>Polar ice is rapidly vanishing in both Antarctica and the South Pole, and the world keeps circling back to the same question: Can we use technology to stop it? </p>



<p>A new review takes a hard look at five of the boldest proposals for slowing polar melt - and comes back with a clear answer: not yet, and maybe not ever.</p>



<p>The stakes are rising fast. In 2025, Arctic sea ice hit its lowest winter maximum on record, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (<a href="https://nsidc.org/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSIDC</a>). </p>



<p>That trend highlights why people keep dreaming up big fixes - and why scientists are now asking tough questions about whether those fixes could actually work.</p>



<p>Led by Professor Martin Siegert of the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, the team evaluated the five ideas against six yardsticks: effectiveness, feasibility, scale and timing, environmental risk, cost, and governance. </p>



<p>Their conclusion is sobering - especially for the Arctic and Antarctic, where even small missteps can cascade into major problems.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-ideas-bigger-costs">Big ideas, bigger costs</h2>



<p>The five ideas are simple to list and hard to pull off. They include <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-small-aerosols-influence-cloud-formation/">stratospheric aerosol</a> injection, which means spraying reflective particles high in the atmosphere, and seabed curtains to block warm currents from ice shelves.</p>



<p>Other ideas are sea ice management by boosting albedo with beads or by thickening ice, basal water removal under glaciers, and ocean iron fertilization (OIF) to stimulate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plankton-at-risk-global-warming-threatens-the-oceans-lifeline/">plankton</a> that carry carbon to the depth.</p>



<p>Cost alone should make readers pause. This analysis estimates that an 80-kilometer (about 50-mile) sea curtain would cost roughly 80 billion dollars over ten years. That figure comes before ongoing maintenance and unforeseen impacts are counted.</p>



<p>"Mid-century is approaching, but our time, money, and expertise is split between evidence-backed net zero efforts and speculative geoengineering projects," said Professor Siegert.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aerosols-can-t-save-the-polar-ice">Aerosols can’t save the polar ice</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosol-formation-earths-lower-atmosphere-soas/">Stratospheric aerosol</a> injection sounds straightforward: add particles like sulfur dioxide high in the stratosphere to reflect sunlight.</p>



<p>Over the poles it runs into physics, since winter darkness removes sunlight for months and cold-season circulation flushes aerosols out faster.</p>



<p>Even when the sun is up, snow and ice already reflect a lot of light, which weakens the effect. </p>



<p>The review also flags known risks, including ozone loss, shifts in rainfall, and the chance of rapid warming if injections stop after years of masking greenhouse heating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thicker-ice-plan-falls-short">Thicker ice plan falls short</h2>



<p>One attention-grabbing idea is to scatter tiny hollow glass microspheres over first-year <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abrupt-collapse-of-arctic-sea-ice-may-come-with-little-warning/">sea ice</a> to reflect more light. </p>



<p>A 2022 paper calculated that roughly 360 megatons of beads per year would be needed and found the beads can darken some surfaces enough to accelerate ice loss.</p>



<p>Support for that approach also sagged outside the lab. A 2025 announcement from the Arctic Ice Project said the nonprofit was winding down after ecotoxicology tests raised potential food web risks.</p>



<p>What about thickening sea ice by pumping seawater onto the surface so it freezes? </p>



<p>The review points out a practical wall here too, since it would mean deploying and maintaining huge numbers of devices across drifting, breaking ice in brutal conditions for years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glacier-pumping-hits-hard-wall">Glacier pumping hits hard wall</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glaciers-from-the-rockies-to-the-alps-are-melting-much-faster-than-expected/">Speeding glaciers</a> depend partly on water at the base that reduces friction. Drilling through miles of moving ice and pumping out subglacial water across wide areas are a massive challenge.</p>



<p>Keeping the holes from freezing shut demands power, logistics, and precision that exceed current polar field capacity.</p>



<p>Fertilizing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">Southern Ocean</a> with iron to grow more plankton has been tested many times. A policy brief notes that only one ship experiment - the <a href="https://epic.awi.de/id/eprint/15162/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">European Iron Fertilization Experiment</a> - saw strong carbon export to more than 9,800 feet, where storage could last centuries. </p>



<p>It also found that nitrous oxide produced during remineralization can offset 5 to more than 40 percent of any carbon gains.</p>



<p>Even if results looked better, governance would still be a hurdle. The London Convention’s 2013 amendment restricts large-scale ocean fertilization to legitimate research, not carbon markets. </p>



<p>The review adds that the <a href="https://www.ats.aq/index_e.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic Treaty System</a> would require strict environmental review for most polar interventions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-realities-of-polar-ice-testing">Harsh realities of polar ice testing</h2>



<p>Polar work windows are short, travel distances are long, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lightning-near-the-north-pole-signals-major-climate-shifts/">storms</a> and sea ice can cancel whole seasons. </p>



<p>That is before counting iceberg hazards, darkness, and the difficulty of powering heavy equipment cleanly without leaving black carbon on the snow.</p>



<p>Scale also defeats many of these ideas. The ocean and ice do not respect neat borders, so diverting warm water from one polar ice shelf can steer it toward another. </p>



<p>Slowing one fast-flowing glacier can also redirect stress or subglacial water and speed up a neighbor.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-co2-still-works-best">Cutting CO2 still works best</h2>



<p>The most reliable lever we have is still cutting carbon dioxide quickly. </p>



<p>The review emphasizes that temperatures tend to stabilize within about two decades after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-technology-is-urgently-needed-to-save-the-climate/">net-zero CO2</a>, which slows the drivers of polar ice loss and gives ecosystems and communities a fighting chance.</p>



<p>Protecting polar biodiversity and local livelihoods also means expanding and enforcing strong protected areas. </p>



<p>It also requires improving monitoring and supporting Indigenous knowledge and leadership in the Arctic. These steps reduce harm now without adding new risks to already stressed systems.</p>

<p>A new study ties ice from ancient global freezes on Earth to powerful pulses of minerals pouring into the ocean. The work explains how moving ice exposed deep rocks, freed key elements, and nudged Earth toward conditions where complex life could take hold.</p>



<p>The idea is simple but bold. When the planet thawed, water rushed across fresh scars in the crust, carrying metals that changed seawater chemistry and set the stage for a livelier biosphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-ice-and-snowball-earth">Global ice and "Snowball Earth"</h2>



<p>Lead author Professor <a href="https://staffportal.curtin.edu.au/staff/profile/view/chris-kirkland-fff48934/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chris Kirkland</a> of <a href="https://www.curtin.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Curtin University</a> led the work. The study focuses on <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/snowball-earth" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Snowball Earth</a>, a time when ice stretched across continents and oceans for long intervals.</p>



<p>These were not quiet scenes. Thick ice scraped bedrock, carved valleys, and left behind layers of mixed debris that later settled into basins.</p>



<p>Scientists see a record of that action in Scotland and Ireland. Their sedimentary rocks capture the stops and starts of ancient climate swings that mark the end of global chill and the return to open seas.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-glaciers-changed-the-crust">How glaciers changed the crust</h2>



<p>The team shows that large ice sheets did more than sit in place. Climate <a href="https://users.physics.ox.ac.uk/~pierrehumbert/papers/Goodman2003.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">models</a> indicate that even under near global freeze conditions, thick floating marine ice flows from poles toward the equator.</p>



<p>A separate analysis shows that sea glaciers were not static but moved at significant speeds while transporting heavy loads of rock and sediment. </p>



<p>This motion increased erosion and helped channel ground up minerals into massive floods once the ice began to melt. Those floods mattered. </p>



<p>“When these giant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-melting-ice-shelves-threaten-global-sea-levels/">ice</a> sheets melted, they triggered enormous floods that flushed minerals and their chemicals, including uranium, into the oceans,” said Professor Kirkland.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The pulse of elements did not just add new ingredients. It altered how seawater handled oxygen and nutrients at a turning point in Earth history.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-zircon-clue">The zircon clue</h2>



<p>To track this action through time, the researchers measured tiny crystals called <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/zircon">zircon</a> in sandstone. Zircon locks in age information, so it lets geologists trace where sediments came from and how deep erosion cut.</p>



<p>The samples include detrital grains, which are pieces of older rocks carried by rivers and ice into new layers. Their ages spread out more in strata tied to glacial episodes, showing that erosion tapped deeper, older crust then.</p>



<p>The team also dated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/geologists-found-the-oldest-rock-in-the-us-dating-back-4-billion-years-zircon-crystals/">zircon crystals</a> to tell younger material from older sources. </p>



<p>A wider spread of ages at glacial horizons points to deeper erosion, consistent with wet based ice that slid, scoured, and then released torrents during melting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-ice-to-land-to-sea">From ice to land to sea</h2>



<p>These floods did not just carry sand. They delivered uranium and other metals that interact with seawater oxygen and sulfide, changing the chemical balance of the ocean surface and seafloor.</p>



<p><a href="https://people.earth.yale.edu/sites/default/files/files/Planavsky/16_%20Sahoo%20et%20al%202012%20Nature.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Evidence</a> from chemical signals in ancient rocks shows that oxygen in the oceans rose after one of the major ice ages in the early Ediacaran period. </p>



<p>This increase matches the timing when animals began to grow more complex and spread more widely.</p>



<p>Scientists can track these changes using trace metals such as uranium and molybdenum, which respond to how much oxygen is in seawater. </p>



<p>Patterns in these metals reveal that oxygen and biological activity kept changing for hundreds of millions of years, stretching from the late Precambrian into the Paleozoic era.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-and-when">Where and when</h2>



<p>The rock story comes from the Dalradian Supergroup of Scotland and Ireland, a thick stack that spans several key glacial intervals. These basins sat along a rifting margin as the ancient supercontinent <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/rodinia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rodinia</a> broke apart.</p>



<p>Certain rock layers show clear signs of ancient ice. Layers left by glaciers, followed by smooth carbonate rocks and coarse debris, mark the cycle of freezing and melting in these regions.</p>



<p>Across those intervals, the spread of zircon ages jumps upward. That jump points to incision into ancient basement rocks during glaciation and renewed river work right after ice retreated.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-ice-matters-for-life-on-earth">Why ice matters for life on Earth</h2>



<p>Oceans react to what rivers carry in. Extra phosphorus from young <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-volcanic-clues-hint-at-ancient-life-on-mars/">volcanic rocks</a> increases growth of simple life, while metals like uranium and molybdenum show how oxygen reached the shallow seas where the first animals lived.</p>



<p>The study connects that chain from crust to coastline. It shows how mechanical erosion, chemical weathering, and sediment routing worked together to change seawater in ways that supported emerging ecosystems.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The researchers explained that their findings show how Earth’s natural systems, from land to oceans to climate, are closely connected.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seeing-oxygen-through-minerals">Seeing oxygen through minerals</h2>



<p>Scientists often infer oxygen conditions using metal enrichments in black shales. Uranium is particularly useful because it is more soluble under oxic waters and more easily buried when conditions turn anoxic.</p>



<p>As ice ground rocks and floods carried fine particles, uranium rich components could move from land into the sea. </p>



<p>That movement fits with independent signals that suggest a rising seawater uranium inventory after major glaciations.</p>



<p>Those shifts in metals were not uniform everywhere. Shelf environments, where early animals lived, likely saw oxygen improve before the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/guitar-shaped-ray-species-discovered-for-the-first-time-lives-in-the-deep-ocean/">deep ocean</a> caught up.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glaciers-variance-and-cause">Glaciers, variance, and cause</h2>



<p>The researchers tested variation in zircon ages statistically. They used a coefficient of variance and saw a first order increase at levels tied to glaciation, a pattern consistent with intensified erosion of old crust.</p>



<p>Back steps in variance after each event point to rivers reworking the newly exposed debris. That matches a world where ice did the heavy cutting, then rivers sorted and spread the spoils.</p>



<p>The combined picture is a planet where climate, tectonics, and surface processes were linked. Ice primed the pump, rivers carried the load, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-identify-two-global-ocean-bands-heating-at-record-rates/">oceans</a> changed in response.</p>



<p>Ancient episodes like these remind us that Earth can flip between very different states. Big climate swings can reorganize the surface system and rewrite the rules for life.</p>



<p>“This research is a stark reminder that while Earth itself will endure, the conditions that make it habitable can change dramatically,” said Professor Kirkland.</p>

<p>The Roman army did not glue itself together with matching uniforms. It bonded through tight friendships, shared routines, and a language of symbols that told every insider who stood where.</p>



<p>Service was long and demanding, so your unit became your world. Under the emperors, a standard career ran about 25 years, a reality the British <a href="https://www.britishmuseum.org/blog/introduction-legion-life-roman-army" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">museum</a> explains plainly.</p>



<p>This piece draws on the <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336100386_Military_identity_and_personal_self-identity_in_the_Roman_army" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> of Dr. Stefanie Hoss, an archaeologist from the University of Cologne whose research into soldiers’ belts and appearance helps decode how identity worked in practice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-citizens-to-professionals">From citizens to professionals</h2>



<p>In the late Republic, many recruits were farmers or tradesmen who fought part time, so they saw themselves first as citizens and only second as soldiers.</p>

<p>Identity could be blunt and direct. Petronius preserves a barracks-style challenge, “commilito, ex qua legione es aut cuius centuria,” </p>



<p>This translates to: “Comrade, from which legion are you, or of which century?” in <a href="https://www.thelatinlibrary.com/petronius1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Satyricon</a>, book 82, by Petronius Arbiter.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-symbolic-roman-uniforms">Symbolic Roman uniforms</h2>



<p>The Romans spoke identity through things. Shields bore painted emblems, standards carried animals tied to a legion’s founder, and gear bore marks that fixed a man to a unit and a role.</p>



<p>“Together with the crunch of hob-nailed sandals, the jingling of the metal belt pieces must have given soldiers a distinctive ‘sound,’ announcing their presence,” wrote Dr. Hoss in a <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Stefanie-Hoss/publication/290485985_The_roman_military_belt/links/617ba6920be8ec17a942e77b/The-roman-military-belt.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a>. Outfit and kit broadcast rank and status. The soldier’s belt, the cingulum, was heavy, bright, and noisy by design. </p>



<p>Modern readers often imagine a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mass-grave-vienna-discovery-tells-the-story-of-a-forgotten-defeat-by-the-roman-empire/">single</a> Roman “uniform,” but the evidence does not support that picture. Styles of tunics, cloaks, boots, and armor varied across time and place.</p>



<p>Scholars who track equipment change argue that similarity came from copying and local production, not from any kind of central planning. </p>



<p>Evidence shows there was no deliberate design system overseeing the production of Roman uniforms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roman-uniforms-aimed-to-impress">Roman uniforms aimed to impress</h2>



<p>Belonging also ran through blood and place. Families often sent sons into the same formations for generations, and patronage helped young men enter the legions that their relatives knew.</p>



<p>Regional armies built pride of their own. Legions on the Rhine did not think like legions on the Danube, and both groups left material traces of local habits from pottery to burial customs.</p>



<p>Roman soldiers aimed to look impressive even off the battlefield. Praetorian guards on duty wore belts and sidearms, even when unarmored. <p>Belts did more than hold swords. Their weight changed how men stood and moved while the metal plates produced a distinct soundscape of service. The aural cues separated soldier from civilian.</p>

<p>The citizen legions never stood alone. The auxilia were noncitizen regiments that brought their own tools, dress, and rituals into the army’s culture.</p>



<p>Over time, lines blurred. Citizenship spread, pay scales shifted, and local recruitment meant neighboring communities fed both auxiliaries and legions, creating mixed identities within single garrisons.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roman-uniforms-carried-identity">Roman uniforms carried identity </h2>



<p>Detachments, or vexillationes, pulled men from home bases for special missions. These temporary teams carried their home identities into new regions and brought new habits back.</p>



<p>That traffic moved symbols and kit styles across provinces. You can see it in equipment decoration that starts in the Danube region and later appears in Britain or Syria.</p>



<p>Soldiers cared about how they would be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-warriors-may-have-used-psychoactive-plants-for-courage-in-battle/">remembered</a>. Awards called donativa and other decorations recorded achievement while a man served, and stone preserved the memory when he fell.</p>



<p>Funerary monuments show men upright with spear, shield, and decorated belts. The poses are formal, the details precise, and the message clear - a life defined by service, rank, and comrades.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roman-uniforms-were-about-community">Roman uniforms were about community</h2>



<p>Uniformity did not create cohesion. Shared hardship, long service, inside jokes, and recognizable sounds did the real work.</p>



<p>Symbols stitched those bonds into public view. A belt could jingle like a calling card, a shield could speak a unit, and a greeting could nail your identity in a single breath.</p>



<p>Recent work does not treat identity as a side note. An edited <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Identities-in-Antiquity/Skinner-Manolopoulou-Tsouparopoulou/p/book/9781138545168" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volume</a> collects studies that show how ancient people built belonging through objects, habits, and stories.</p>



<p>That broader lens confirms what the military evidence keeps showing. Soldiers found unity in layered identities, from tent to tomb, far beyond any matching tunic.</p>

<p>Eating is never just about filling the stomach. Hunger rises, flavors tempt, and moods decide whether a meal feels right or not. All of these signals meet in the brain, where tiny structures manage big decisions about food.</p>



<p>One of those small but powerful hubs is the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, or BNST. It sits near the center of the brain and is no bigger than a sunflower seed. Despite its size, it plays a surprising role in controlling how much we eat. </p>



<p>Researchers are now showing that this structure links taste, hunger, and even stress into a single system that can push us toward or away from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-our-brains-tell-us-when-we-need-to-eat-or-drink-neurons-hunger-thirst/">food</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taste-signals-in-the-brain">Taste signals in the brain</h2>

<p>Activating the BNST might help patients who lose their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-brain-has-a-meal-memory-that-controls-hunger/">appetite</a> during illness or medical treatments. On the other hand, carefully dampening its signals could support weight management in people struggling with overeating.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-drugs-fit-in">Where drugs fit in</h2>



<p>Some of today’s weight-loss drugs already interact with BNST-linked neurons. Understanding exactly how this happens may explain why some patients respond strongly while others see little effect. </p>



<p>It may also guide improvements. Since food intake involves many brain circuits, targeting only one pathway may not be enough. Still, the BNST offers a promising starting point for designing therapies that act on motivation and need together.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brain-s-role-in-eating">Brain's role in eating</h2>



<p>The BNST sits small and quiet in the brain, but its influence spreads wide. It links taste, hunger, salt balance, stress, and reward into a single system that can either open the door to food or close it. That makes it one of the most important switches for eating behavior.</p>



<p>As research grows, this tiny structure may become a major focus in medicine. By understanding how it balances signals, scientists could develop treatments that restore appetite where it is lost or calm it where it runs out of control. </p>



<p>In the end, this seed-sized part of the brain might hold the key to shaping healthier eating.</p>

<p>In nature, flashy displays usually scream courtship. Peacocks fan iridescent trains, peacock spiders dance in sequined shorts, and all the glitter serves one end: to impress a mate. So when Panama’s matador bugs - <em>Anisoscelis alipes</em> - waggle bright, banner-like hind legs, the obvious guess has been sexual selection. </p>



<p>But a new <a href="https://stri.si.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute</a> (STRI) study says the leg-waving isn’t a love signal at all.</p>



<p>“The very nature of discovery is that we can’t anticipate where our questions lead,” said STRI postdoctoral fellow Ummat Somjee, whose work on sexual selection and insect weaponry has been widely covered. </p>



<p>“By following our curiosity we sometimes arrive at unexpected realities, leading us to reevaluate the very questions we asked in the first place.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-matador-bugs-put-to-the-test">Matador bugs put to the test</h2>



<p>Sexual selection leaves a telltale pattern. In species with showy male ornaments, males tend to carry bigger, brighter structures than females, and they show them off more often - especially at close range to suitors or rivals.</p>



<p>The STRI-led team, with collaborators in the UK, Panama, the United States, Switzerland, and Germany, set out to test whether matador bugs fit that script.</p>



<p>They first gave each wild-caught bug a tiny dot of nontoxic paint so individuals could be tracked. Then, in a screened enclosure, they released the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-are-still-disappearing-and-there-are-hundreds-of-reasons-why/">insects</a> in groups of three, stepped out, and let the cameras roll.</p>



<p>Over repeated trials, they recorded positions every couple of minutes, later combing through full-session video to measure how often and how long the bugs waved and how far apart they were when they did. By the end, they had logged more than 745 flag-waving bouts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-showy-legs-aren-t-about-mating">Showy legs aren’t about mating</h2>



<p>The pattern was striking for how unsexy it was. Flag size scaled with body size in both sexes, but females - though generally larger - did not carry disproportionately bigger flags than males of the same size. Males and females waved about as often and at similar rates.</p>



<p>Most telling, waving tended to happen when other bugs were farther away, not at close quarters where courtship and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-clues-about-the-feeding-habits-of-grasshoppers/">rivalry</a> typically unfold. Whether the trio was all male, all female, or mixed didn’t change the behavior.</p>



<p>Taken together, the evidence points away from signaling to mates or rivals. For matador bugs, flamboyant feet are probably not about impressing anyone.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bugs-wave-to-stay-alive">Bugs wave to stay alive</h2>



<p>If sex isn’t the driver, another explanation rises to the top: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worms-activate-an-ancient-sleep-circuit-when-trapped-by-predators/">predator</a> distraction. In the wild, nearly one in six matador bugs is missing a hind leg. That’s a lot of lost limbs in exactly the spot where those flashy flags are.</p>



<p>The team suspects the bright, mobile banners operate like a bullfighter’s cape - drawing attacks away from vital body parts. Sacrificing a leg is bad, but it’s better than being eaten.</p>



<p>Future experiments will directly test this idea, for instance by observing predator strikes with and without flags or by manipulating color and motion to see what attackers target.</p>



<p>The researchers aren’t ruling out other functions either; flags could startle predators, misdirect their aim, or even act as a general “back off” signal to larger animals without being a specialized sexual signal.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flashy-bugs-spark-new-solutions">Flashy bugs spark new solutions</h2>



<p>Matador bugs aren’t just jungle curiosities. In Panama and neighboring Costa Rica, they’re common pests on passion fruit (<em>Passiflora edulis</em>) farms. If the flags are indeed decoys for predators, that insight could inform <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pests-are-moving-to-cooler-regions-due-to-climate-change/">pest</a> management.</p>



<p>Encouraging natural enemies - or even designing low-toxicity lures that exploit the bugs’ own signaling - might offer alternatives to broad-spectrum insecticides that harm beneficial insects as well.</p>



<p>Good ideas start with careful natural history. Until now, the matador bug’s signature behavior was famous mostly as a striking photograph on guidebook covers. This study turns the image into data.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fieldwork-beats-the-feed"><a></a>Fieldwork beats the feed</h2>



<p>Much of the project’s grunt work fell to early-career researchers tracking painted bugs under tropical heat. For first author and <a href="https://www.manchester.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Manchester</a> undergraduate intern Cameron Longbottom, the field season was transformational.</p>



<p>“Being in the field in Panama is so different from watching Avatar on the internet," he said. "To see animals in their own habitats - you don’t get that in many places. there is still so much to learn.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-showiness-can-also-mean-survival">Showiness can also mean survival</h2>



<p>Charles Darwin wrestled with the strange logic of ornamentation and ultimately proposed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/temperature-tolerance-has-co-evolved-with-sexual-selection/">sexual selection</a> to explain it. That theory remains a powerful lens, but it isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to every bright color or exaggerated appendage.</p>



<p>The matador bug’s neon leg flags remind us that conspicuous traits can evolve for reasons other than romance - especially if they help animals survive long enough to reproduce.</p>



<p>For now, the verdict is clear: the leg-waving that made these insects famous doesn’t help them flirt. It likely helps them live.</p>

<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>

<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>

<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



<p>This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.</p>
