If you’re a male gray frog trying to find a mate, you’d better have a fast and steady call. That’s what female treefrogs usually go for. But when the crowd gets loud and chaotic, things change. The males that don’t sound all that great? They suddenly have a shot.



In quiet situations where females only hear two males at once, their preferences are clear. They go for the one with the sharper, more rhythmic call. 



But when four or even eight males are calling at once, things get messy. Female choices become unpredictable. This isn’t just a frog issue - it ties into a broader idea that scientists call “choice overload.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frogs-face-chaos-in-the-chorus">Frogs face chaos in the chorus</h2>



In nature, frogs gather in large, noisy groups called choruses. Picture a shallow pond in spring, with dozens of males calling out at the same time. It’s the frog equivalent of a dating scene in a packed nightclub.



The researchers found that the crowded conditions of these choruses might be too overwhelming for females to reliably pick the best mate. It’s not that they stop caring - it’s that they can’t tell who’s who.



Professor Jessie Tanner of the <a href="https://www.utk.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tennessee, Knoxville</a>, led a team studying how choice overload affects evolution.



“Because female mate choice can drive evolution, our results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unraveling-the-story-of-early-animal-evolution/">evolution</a> might happen more slowly than we thought before,” she said. 



“Some males that are fairly unattractive could still mate, especially if they take advantage of crowded spaces where females might be less able to discriminate between attractive and unattractive males.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-when-choices-are-too-hard">What happens when choices are too hard?</h2>



The idea of choice overload is pretty common in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-behind-predicting-and-changing-human-behavior/">human behavior</a>. You walk into a store to buy toothpaste and face 50 brands. You either freeze, grab something random, or walk away. Same goes for dating apps with endless swiping.



“We wanted to understand how having to make mating decisions in crowded environments, where choice overload could be a problem, might drive the evolution of calls,” Tanner explained. 



“Since males that are chosen by females pass on their genes to the next generation, this mate choice can cause the population to change over time.”



When animals, like people, face too many options, their decision-making can break down. That opens up a chance for less attractive mates to get picked - not because they became more appealing, but because the chooser got overwhelmed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-choice-overload-in-other-animals">Choice overload in other animals</h2>



This isn’t just about frogs. Scientists are now looking at how this effect shows up in other animals. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-increasingly-stressed-over-the-past-century/">Bumblebees</a>, for instance, are on the list. So are wood roaches.



“Our lab is working to understand how choice overload and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-have-lungs-that-cancel-out-background-noise/">noise</a> may each contribute to the difficulty female treefrogs face in making mating decisions,” Tanner said. 



“We are also working to understand whether this choice overload is something that occurs generally in many different kinds of animals or is more specific to individual species.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simultaneous-cricket-songs">Simultaneous cricket songs </h2>



Tanner, who has a background in both psychology and biology, first got into animal behavior while studying mate choice as an undergrad. She later became interested in sound - especially how it plays into animal communication.



That led to earlier work on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-male-crickets-go-silent-how-females-adapt-and-respond/">crickets</a>. Like treefrogs, male crickets use sound to attract mates. A study on cricket mating showed that noisy environments might either block females from hearing calls or make them too confused to pick. It was hard to tell which was causing the problem.



“During that study, it became clear that our work was consistent with both the possibility that many simultaneous cricket songs created noise that made it hard for females to hear, and the possibility that the females were experiencing choice overload,” Tanner said. “Our current work looks to disentangle those ideas.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-average-becomes-good-enough">When average becomes good enough</h2>



The research adds a new layer to how scientists think about evolution. Normally, stronger signals - like a faster frog call - are expected to win out and spread through the population over time. 



But if crowded conditions keep females from consistently picking the top performers, evolution slows down. Mediocre traits stick around longer.



That changes the math for survival. In nature, being the best isn’t always enough - and sometimes, being just okay is good enough, especially if the crowd’s loud and the choices are many.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2025.0585" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences</a>.

Frogs settle for average mates when dating gets too noisy

A new study has found that marine protected areas (MPAs) leave many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-map-little-ocean-wilderness/">marine wildlife species </a>vulnerable to habitat decline, fishing, and other human activities. 

The study, conducted by the <a href="http://helcom.fi/news/Pages/Network-of-Baltic-marine-protected-areas-expands-in-Finland.aspx">Finnish Marine Protected Areas Network</a>, found that three-quarters of important species are unprotected because MPAs are rarely designed to account for what’s under the surface. 

To help remedy this gap in protections, the researchers modeled biodiversity and marine conservation in areas that had the highest conservation value using a new methodology that could help create more effective MPAs and direct the placement of infrastructure like offshore wind farms. 

The results, published in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2018.00402/full">Frontiers in Marine Science</a>, show that if MPAs were expanded by just one percent, it would go a long way in marine conservation. 

MPAs are designed to protect against human activities. However, even with these safeguards in place, the researchers discovered that there were still species left unprotected in these areas. 

In Finland for example, 10 percent of the country’s surrounding seas are protected. However, only 27 percent of marine biodiversity are included in those protections. 

“Establishment of these protected sites has relied on certain important habitats, such as lagoons, shallow bays, and reefs, or the presence of seals or important bird areas, rather than knowledge of underwater species present or the ecological value of those areas,” said Elina Virtanen, the lead author of the study.

The researchers needed to find a better way to model marine biodiversity and identify the “hot spots” where expanded conservation would help most. 

The team used data from 140,000 samples of marine species to create ecological distribution models. 

“We found that increasing the protected area from just 10% to 11% in the most biodiverse areas would double conservation of the most ecologically important species,” said Virtanen. “This means increased protection of rare and threatened species, functionally important species and fish reproduction areas.”

The researchers recommend expanding MPAs using these models and allocating human activities to areas where there are lower levels of biodiversity and less risk of species decline. 

“There is a need to reassess current MPA boundaries to ensure they focus conservation efforts to the most valuable areas, and an increased emphasis on ecological efficiency is essential when designating or expanding MPAs,” said Virtanen. “This way we can ensure that Marine Protected Areas achieve global conservation objectives meaningfully and efficiently.”

Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a hot spot for bee diversity, but the Trump administration’s push for fewer land protections could put the thriving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bee-friendly-pesticides/">bee populations</a> in the region at risk, according to a new study. 

In 2017, Trump reduced protections for both Utah’s Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument and Bears Ears National Monument in a bid to make more land available for mining and other commercial ventures. 

Besides being a historical landmark, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument houses a wealth of geological information dating back millions of years and is rich in biodiversity. 

Researchers from <a href="http://www.usu.edu/">Utah State University</a> recently published a paper in the journal PeerJ documenting a four-year study of the monument and its bee populations. 

One out of every four bee species known in the United States can be found in Utah, and there are more bee species in the “The Beehive State” than most other states in the country. 

The researchers found that nearly half of Utah’s bee species live in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. 

660 species of bee were identified in the study, and some of the species were new discoveries. 

“We identified almost as many species as are known in the entire eastern United States,” said Olivia Messinger Carril, a lead author of the study. “We discovered 49 previously unknown species, as well as 150 'morphospecies,' that is, somewhat unique species that don't match known species.”

The reason for all the bee biodiversity has a lot to do with the number of flowering plant species in the region.

“Many are surprised to learn 87 percent of Utah's flowering plant species live within the monument's boundaries,” said Carril. “Which likely contributes to the rich diversity of pollinators.”

The Trump administration reduced the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to about half its previous size, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/04/us/trump-bears-ears.html">New York Times</a>, which could jeopardize the future of the regions bees and threaten the biodiversity of both bee species and flowering plants. 

“It's an amazing natural laboratory of pollinators, of which we don't know a lot,” said Joseph Wilson, a member of the research team. “The large reduction of this protected areas could have implications for future biodiversity.”

Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah is home to thriving bee diversity

According to a new study, a mechanism that is necessary for the development of bird feather patterns also regulates the construction of sharks’ skin. The study authors explained that this particular mechanism has likely controlled the development of external structures such as hair, feathers, scales, and teeth for the duration of vertebrate evolution, which dates back at least 450 million years. 

From the scales of a snake to the feathers of a flamingo, epithelial appendages are showcased in a diverse range of vertebrate characteristics. The structures all have similar positioning because they grow from a common place - the epithelial placode. 

Alan Turing is famous for engineering what is now referred to as the reaction-diffusion (RD) model, a system that explains nature's diverse patterning as seen in modern animals. However, while research has found support for RD patterning in four-legged animals, a role for this system in earlier-diverging lineages is not clear. 

For the current investigation, Rory L. Cooper and colleagues studied the small-spotted catshark from the ancient shark family at around 80 days post-fertilization using RD modeling and gene expression analysis. 

RD modeling demonstrated that dorsal denticle rows acted as “initiator” rows, which triggered the creation of surrounding skin that has a tooth-like pattern. Next, the researchers compared the patterning of shark denticles to chick feathers by examining the expression of the protein β-catenin (β-cat), which is an early sign of chick epithelial placode signaling. 

The study revealed that there is a similarity between <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/basking-sharks-swimming-skills/">shark</a> and chick epithelial appendage patterning. Following a timeline that is comparable to feather patterning, the shark lateral line expressed β-cat soon before denticle patterning began. 

The research team also used the RD model to explain the diversity of denticle patterning in other ancient elasmobranchs. They found that, within this group, the system may have aided the evolution of various denticle functions, such as protective armor, hydrodynamic drag reduction, feeding, and communication. 

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

The single mechanism behind patterns in bird feathers and shark skin

Researchers have identified a key difference in the way that babies and adults laugh. The experts found that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/smiling-babies-responding-parents/">babies</a> laugh not only when they exhale, but also as they inhale, which is a behavior that has been observed among chimpanzees and other nonhuman primates. 

A research team led by Professor Disa Sauter of the <a href="http://www.uva.nl/">University of Amsterdam</a> obtained audio clips from online videos that featured babies laughing as they engaged in playful interactions. The audio recordings, which included 44 infants and children between 18 months and three years old, were analyzed by over 100 psychology students. 

The listeners were asked to evaluate the extent to which the laughter in each recording was produced during an inhale versus an exhale.

The study revealed that the youngest babies commonly laughed during both inhalation and exhalation, which is also the case for nonhuman primates. On the other hand, the older babies mainly laughed while exhaling, just like older children and adults.

“Adult humans sometimes laugh on the inhale but the proportion is markedly different from that of infants' and chimps' laughs. Our results so far suggest that this is a gradual, rather than a sudden, shift,” said Professor Sauter. She explained that the transition does not appear to be linked to any particular developmental milestones. 

Humans are the only primates that reserve laughter for exhalation, and the reason for this is not yet known. According to Professor Sauter, one possible explanation is that the behavior results from the vocal control that is developed as humans learn to speak.

The researchers are currently investigating a potential link between the amount of laughter produced upon inhalation and exhalation. They are also studying the various reasons that individuals laugh, which also changes with age.

“Beyond that, I'd be interested in seeing whether our findings apply to other vocalizations than laughter,” said Professor Sauter. “If we know what normally developing babies sound like, it could be interesting to study infants at risk to see whether there are very early signs of atypical development in their nonverbal vocalizations of emotion.”

The research will be presented by Professor Sauter at the <a href="https://acousticalsociety.org/176th-meeting-acoustical-society-of-america/">Acoustical Society of America's 176th Meeting</a> in Victoria, Canada.

Small babies laugh the same way that nonhuman primates do

A new study led by the Milner Centre for Evolution at the <a href="https://www.bath.ac.uk/">University of Bath</a> has determined that climate change will facilitate the return of deadly mosquito-borne diseases. After tracing the evolutionary tree of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/malarial-mosquitoes-cattle-decoys/">mosquitoes</a> back as far as 195 million years, the researchers found that mosquito-related illnesses will not only affect Europe and other areas where the diseases have been previously eradicated, but will impact completely new regions as well. 

Mosquito-borne diseases including malaria, Yellow fever, Zika virus, and Dengue fever are responsible for millions of deaths each year. The rate at which new species of mosquitoes evolve usually increases as levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide rise. 

Despite this known link between rising CO2 levels and mosquito diversification, however, the researchers have discovered that this association is much more complicated than previously realized. Other factors, such as the diversity of mammalian hosts, also contribute to an increase in the species variance of mosquitoes.

Study co-author Professor Matthew Wills explained: “It's only the female mosquitoes that take a blood meal, and they use the CO2 that mammals and other vertebrates exhale as a very general cue to locate their hosts. One line of thinking is that as ambient levels of atmospheric CO2 rose, as they have done in recent decades, mosquitoes may have found it increasingly difficult to distinguish between the CO2 from their hosts and those background levels.”

“Vision, body heat and other smells might then have become more important in locating their blood meals, but many of these cues tend to be more specific to particular hosts. As a general rule, we know that strong host specificity can be an important driver of speciation within parasites, and the same may be true in mosquitoes.”

Study co-author Dr. Katie Davis from the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a>'s Department of Biology, said: “We found that the increase in the diversity of mammals led directly to a rise in the number of mosquito species, and also that there is a relationship between CO2 levels and the number of mammal species, but there are still missing pieces of this puzzle, so we can still only speculate at this stage.”

“It is important to look at the evolution of the mosquito against climate change because mosquitoes are responsive to CO2 levels. Atmospheric CO2 levels are currently rising due to changes in the environment that are connected to human activity, so what does this mean for the mosquito and human health?”

“Despite some uncertainties, we can now show that mosquito species are able to evolve and adapt to climate change in high numbers. With increased speciation, however, comes the added risk of disease increase and the return of certain diseases in countries that had eradicated them or never experienced them before.”


The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/commsbio">Communications Biology</a>.

Climate change could bring back eradicated mosquito-related diseases

It’s easy to see that lizards and salamanders have similarities.  Their bones and basic body structure are remarkably similar. A major difference between the true groups of herptiles is of course skin the lizards are scaly while the salamander’s skin is smooth and porous.  These differences are obvious reflections of different lineages, those of amphibians and reptiles respectively. It’s clear that the evolutionary history of salamanders and lizards is very different from the outset.  

Interestingly, the evolution of a similar body plan in lizards and salamanders doesn’t quite qualify as convergent evolution, one of the more interesting ideas in evolutionary theory.  Convergent evolution is the adaptation of two different types of animals to a similar habitat or niche. 

It’s probably obvious that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/mosquito-repellent-killing-salamanders/">salamanders</a> and lizards live very different lives.  Salamanders require water for at least part of their lives, while some species never leave water at all.  Lizards on the other hand are sometimes adapted to dry conditions as anyone who has spent time hiking in the desert of Utah can attest to.  Some lizards have go as far as evolving to never drink water, obtaining all their hydration from prey instead. Clearly the tailed quadrupedal body of both lizards and salamanders simply evolved for two separate types of life, not due to similar evolutionary pressures.  There are still some interesting cases of convergent evolution between reptiles and amphibians.

One type of salamander does actually resemble a specific type of lizard in what can be considered convergent evolution of tongues.  The Plethodontidae family of salamanders often referred to simply as the ‘lungless’ salamanders may seem at first blush nothing like chameleons.  However, as a paper in the <a href="http://jeb.biologists.org/content/210/4/655">Journal of Experimental Biology</a> notes, some of these salamanders have extremely high powered tongue projection.  

The tongue of these salamanders can be extended up to 80% of the animal’s total body length in just 20 milliseconds.  If you’ve ever observed chameleons for any length of time, you’ll have noticed that they too have projectile tongues used to capture elusive prey.  According to <a href="https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/01/160105-chameleons-tongue-speed-animals-science/">National Geographic</a>, chameleon tongues average even longer at about twice the animal’s normal body length.  Not just tongues have converged in their evolution in reptiles and amphibians.

Prionosuchus is an extinct genus of amphibians that lived in what is now Brazil approximately 270 million years ago.  Brazil in the Permian when Prionosuchus lived wasn’t radically different from what we think of Brazil today: hot, humid and forested.  The amphibian was found with fish and other aquatic animals, so it certainly lived in the water like its extant relatives.  

According to <a href="https://www.newdinosaurs.com/prionosuchus/">NewDinosaurs</a>, Prionosuchus was a giant, measuring up to 30 feet long and weighing more than 2 tons when alive.  Most specimens are much smaller but the larger individuals would have been terrifying. The monstrous amphibian also had a long, thin snout lined with sharp teeth and a low, squat body with a wide tail adapted for swimming.  Interestingly, with its general body shape, aquatic lifestyle and tropical habitat, Prionosuchus resembles nothing so much as an extinct, amphibian crocodilian.  Indeed, it seems likely that Prionosuchus once inhabited the same ecological niche now occupied by crocodiles and alligators.  Other examples of convergence are out there.

Much has been made about the convergent evolution of flight and it is fascinating.  Birds, bats, pterosaurs and insects are not closely related but all have evolved the ability to fly.  It’s obvious with not much more than a cursory examination that the ways in which each of these animals fly is unique to their lineage.  An insect wing is nothing like the boney feathered wing of an eagle and neither is very much like the membrane spread over a modified hand that bats use to fly.  There is convergent evolution not just in flying but also in gliding. 

So called flying squirrels are probably the most famous example of animals that regularly glide.  Mammals aren’t the only animals to evolve the ability to glide though, and much like the art of flight, it has evolved differently among different animals.  With flying squirrels, there is a membrane of skin between the limbs which allows the animal to glide. 

The Malabar Gliding Frog (Rhacophorus malabaricus) evolved a different strategy.  The gliding frog is native to the Western Ghats, a mountain range in India where it lives a life in trees.  The frog can extend its large webbed feet when jumping and glide. Another tree frog, the genus Ecnomiohyla of Central and South America evolved to glide in the same way, an example of convergent evolution among different frog groups.  The lizard genus Draco has evolved a remarkably similar strategy to a similar problem though in a very different way.  

Draco has a flattened rib cage which can expand beyond their normal configuration reports <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/reptiles/d/draco-lizard/">National Geographic</a>.  With ribs extended, skin is stretched across them, making the lizard appear superficially like a flying squirrel.  Interestingly, Draco is also found in the forests of Southeast Asia, where the female lizards only venture down from the trees to lay their eggs on the ground.  The ability to glide is a useful one for quickly escaping predators or perhaps even catching prey. 

There’s even a genus of snakes, Chrysopelea that evolved the ability to glide by flattening their bodies and undulating in a unique way.  These snakes are also native to the forests of Southeast Asia, a place that seems to be a hotspot for the evolution of gliding.  Southeast Asia is even the home to two genera of gliding geckos. Clearly there must have been a lot of danger lurking in the heights of Asia’s forests that gave an advantage to those animals that could leap away and glide to safety.  Or perhaps the ability to glide is an adaptation to being prone to falling. Either way, patterns that show up again and again in unrelated organisms tell us something important. 

Convergent evolution shows us the extent to which the same physical limitations dictate our individual histories.  Each lineage may respond differently but sometimes it’s a response to the same problem, similar in effect to different engineers contriving unique solutions to the same problem.  The difference of course is that evolution is a natural process occurring without guidance over vast stretches of time acting on minute difference in genetics.

Convergent evolution in reptiles & amphibians

It’s easy to see that lizards and salamanders have similarities....

Both bats and dolphins use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bats-echolocation-hunt-prey/">echolocation to hunt prey</a> and explore their surroundings, but the question is, who does it better? 

Sonar and echolocation have helped improve sensing technology but our current sensors pale in comparison to those used in the natural world. 

Researchers have much to learn from bats and dolphins, but when it comes to dealing with acoustic interference, bats seem to have a leg up according to recent studies. 

A special session during the <a href="https://acousticalsociety.org/176th-meeting-acoustical-society-of-america/">Acoustical Society of America's 176th Meeting</a> this week will discuss bat and dolphin sonar systems as well as how echolocation studies can improve not just our understanding of different species but also improve sensor technology.

One of the session speakers, Laura Kloepper, will present her research comparing dolphins and bats and their ability to deal with acoustic interference. 

Kloepper is self-proclaimed “team bat,” but her work revolves around examining both dolphins and bats to prove why bats are more effective at dealing with interference. 

“I'm going to be presenting the first study looking at how dolphins might be changing their signals to avoid jamming, or if they are even subject to any sort of acoustic jamming,” said Kloepper.

First, Kloepper revealed a dolphin who was using echolocation to perform a task to outside dolphin sounds using speakers and microphones. 

The researchers observed how the dolphin responded to the outside noise but discovered that dolphins might not have to deal with as much acoustic interference within a pod because their clicks are so short. 

“The probability of overlapping one call with another dolphin isn't high, because the clicks are so short, therefore dolphins don't really have a need to change to avoid any sort of acoustic interference,” said Kloepper. “Bats, on other hand, have calls that are much longer in duration, so have a higher probability of overlapping with other bats when they are flying in the same airspace.”

Kloepper compared the results of the dolphin study to her research on bats which involves using drones and other mobile devices for recording bats while they fly. 

For example, a hawk trained to fly through a swarm of bats has helped show how bats can change the frequency and pitch of their calls over time. 

According to Kloepper, bats can overcome acoustic interference by changing their calls. 

“They have the ability to be really flexible with their echolocation, which is how they can overcome this jamming,” said Kloepper.

Huge hurricanes that have hit the Gulf Coast in recent years as a result of climate change have not altered life within the waters, researchers at <a href="https://utmsi.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin's Marine Science Institute</a> (UTMSI) found. Some fish species were still able to spawn during a Category 4 hurricane, which is great news for species across the globe.

A team of UTMSI researchers along with scientists from the <a href="http://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida</a> discovered via underwater microphones that the Gulf Coast’s spotted trout continued to spawn during <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/hurricane-harvey-global-warming/">Hurricane Harvey</a> in August 2017, which brought with it an 8- to 10-foot storm surge and 134 miles per hour winds.

During the storm, the sea trout spawned normally. The only upset occurred after the storm when the trout began spawning 2.5 hours earlier than usual. However, their schedule returned to normal after a few days.

This is great news for the Texas coast, where sportfishing is a $2 billion industry, and is relieving for environmentalists who are studying the impact of climate change on global species.

Christopher Biggs, a UTMSI PhD candidate studying fisheries ecology and lead author on a paper, said, “This data gives us a little insight into how key species will handle changing and unpredictable conditions. They are somewhat preadapted to this. They regularly deal with changing situations. They might be better suited to handle the changing climate in the future."

Briggs added that sea trout are an important factor in the Gulf Coast ecosystem. Not only do they attract sport fishermen, but they’re also, “a top predator in the estuary and a favorite food for dolphins."

If the Gulf Coast sea trout were unaffected by Hurricane Harvey, this could mean other fish species are just as hearty and can easily adapt to the increase of extreme weather.

The Giant Salamander of China is an obscure animal, one you’d easily be forgiven for mistaking as an online hoax.  But the salamander is an actual animal, even five to eight different animal species. How much longer the Giant Salamanders will be actual living animals remains unclear.  Giant salamanders at first seem like a relic from a distant past that have outlived their time… and this isn’t entirely untrue. 

The oldest fossil evidence of giant salamanders, reported in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nature01491">Nature</a> in 2003, comes from the Middle Jurassic and were found in volcanic deposits in China dating back roughly 160 million years.  This fossil salamander is very similar to the living giant salamanders found in China today, which is why the group of salamanders are considered living fossils.  

Until recently, the family Cryptobranchidae was thought to be a fairly small one, with only a few species known.  The <a href="http://eol.org/pages/319982/details">Japanese Giant Salamander</a> (Andrias japonicus) reaching impressive lengths of almost 5 feet and the <a href="http://eol.org/pages/1018725/details">Chinese Giant Salamander</a> (Andrias davidianus) were thought to be the only living relatives to the United States less impressive Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis), reaching lengths of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellbender">12 to 29 inches</a>.  

<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-44190126">BBC News</a> reported earlier this year that in fact, the Chinese Giant Salamander may be up to eight separate species.  Each of the eight species looks very similar, accounting for why it took a genetic study to define the separate species.

All together, the Chinese Giant Salamander has a strange appearance from the standpoint of a bipedal ape.  The animal’s body is flattened for a life in the bottom of streams and ponds. The head is wide and flat, reminding me a little bit of a less exaggerated <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplocaulus">Diplocaulus</a>, the so-called boomerang headed amphibian from the Permian, a distant relative.  

The animal is an indistinct mottled grey/greenish color.  Eyes are on the top of the Chinese Giant’s head and are largely useless.  Instead of seeing, the over-sized amphibian uses special sensory nodes over its entire body to hunt for insects, crabs, smaller amphibians and mammals, not being a very picky eater.  Eggs are laid in a hidden cavity underwater and guarded by the male salamander until they hatch. Captive salamanders have lived up to 60 years but the average lifespan is unknown, according to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_giant_salamander#Feeding">Wikipedia</a>.                

The largest wildlife survey carried out to date in China found the giant salamanders at 4 of 97 sites surveyed across 16 of China’s 23 provinces.  Genetic evidence showed that the salamanders found in the wild may not have been native to the areas they were found, instead released from salamander farms where the animals are raised as food delicacies.  

The study also found that the Chinese Giant Salamander is at least five separate species and perhaps as many as eight.  The releases from farms which are encouraged by the Chinese government as a conservation method, may in fact be damaging the genetics of the separate species by encouraging hybridization.  The Chinese Giant Salamander is listed 3rd on <a href="https://www.edgeofexistence.org/species/">Edge’s list</a> of focal species, it is also <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/1272/3375181">IUCN red listed</a> as critically endangered.  The population is declining too according to IUCN.  The Chinese Giant Salamander isn’t alone in this sad state of affairs either.

The Japanese Giant Salamander is doing better, listed by <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/1273/3376261">IUCN</a> as only nearly threatened, but the population is still said to be declining.  The Japanese Salamander is also sometimes hunted as a delicacy and silt runoff caused by deforestation may cause the salamander problems in the future.  

The related giant is similar to its Chinese counterpart in appearance but with a wrinkly mottled grey green skin.  The Japanese Giant Salamander seems to be a popular new exhibit in zoos. Hawaii News Now reported in February that a new Japanese Giant Salamander exhibit was opening at the Honolulu Zoo, including three individual salamanders.  <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/oakland/2018/08/03/detroit-zoo-japanese-giant-salamanders/900246002/">Detroit Free Press</a> reported in August that the Detroit Zoo’s Japanese Giant Salamanders got a new enclosure.  <a href="https://news.mongabay.com/2018/05/chinese-giant-salamander-is-at-least-five-species-all-nearly-extinct/">Mongabay</a> reports there are striking differences between wild populations of Japanese Giant Salamanders and their Chinese relatives as well.             

Mongabay also reports that it took researchers in China an average of 16 weeks to find a giant salamander.  In Japan, researchers average just a bit over an hour to find that country’s giant salamander. In the US it takes researchers an average of about two hours to find a hellbender.  Even the hellbender is near threatened according to <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/59077/11879843">IUCN</a> with their population declining.  

Eastern hellbenders are the only giant salamander found in the US and probably the one with the most interesting common name.  The hellbender is of course much smaller than the Chinese and Japanese salamanders that it shares a family with. Perhaps ‘rather large’ salamander is a more apt description for the hellbender than ‘giant’.  The hellbender is also more visually attractive than its Asian relatives. 

The salamander is an olive green color spotted with bright orange and a pale belly.  The hellbender specializes in cold streams with fast flowing water and is only found in a small area of south eastern mountains.  The Ozark hellbender is a subspecies of the eastern hellbender. The <a href="https://www.fws.gov/midwest/endangered/amphibians/ozhe/ozheSummary2011FinalRule.html">Fish and Wildlife Service</a> reports that the Ozark hellbender is listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.  The service says that the population of Ozark hellbenders, limited to only 8 rivers historically has declined to a point where only about 590 individuals remain in the wild, remaining in only 3 rivers.  Researchers at one river found 1,150 hellbenders along a 1.7 mile stretch in 1973. In 2006, only 200 individuals could be found in the same area.

The Chinese Giant Salamanders are clearly doing the worst of all the giant salamanders in the world.  It’s not hard to imagine them simply being the first of the living giant amphibians to become extinct with the others following eventually.  The ancient lineage of giant salamanders on earth is no guarantee for their future survival, they’ve already survived the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/warming-mountain-birds-extinction/">extinction</a> of many others, most famously the dinosaurs.  Whether genetics can be taken into account in the survival of all of China’s giants will be important. Even survival of one hybridized species of giant salamander would be better than the extinction of all species.  Only the future will tell.

You’ve heard of whale watching, but what about whale listening?

Now, thanks to an extensive research project called <a href="http://www.orcasound.net/">Orcasound</a>, you can tune into live streams of orca whales near Washington State and participate in a massive citizen science initiative.

Orcasound is using advances in technology, streaming media, and algorithms to take citizen science to the next level and make it easier for people who are passionate about marine conservation and whales to access sounds and recordings typically reserved for field researchers. 

To study, track, and model <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/satellites-endangered-whale-populations/">whale populations</a>, researchers first need to find them. In the ocean, this is easier said than done, especially during temperamental weather or at night when spotting for whales is nearly impossible. 

This is why researchers use hydrophones, underwater microphones, that can pick up whale calls and other underwater sounds.

Algorithms can take hydrophone audio data and create models and projections that can help marine biologists better understand different environmental impacts and set up measures to protect and manage threatened species. 

Once researchers hear a whale on a hydrophone, a team of fieldworkers can track the whale, collect fecal samples and even pieces of prey left behind, all of which help further our understanding of the ocean’s largest mammals. 

This is where Orcasound comes in. Now, instead of a small team of researchers tuning into the hydrophones, anyone with a computer can open the live stream and listen for orcas near the San Juan Islands.

Scott Viers, the lead researcher of Orcasound, says that the aim of the project is to create a user-friendly and inexpensive app that gets more people engaged in marine research. 

Right now, the web app for Orcasound uses the same data formats of other popular video streaming services like Youtube. 

“We want to make it really easy for citizen scientists to listen to signals,” said Veirs.

People listening to live streams are encouraged to email Orcasound when they hear something, but a future version of the app will include a button that users can click w12hen they hear something interesting. 

All audio is uploaded to online cloud storage servers for later analysis whether by researchers or algorithms. 

Veirs will discuss the Orcasound app and its many potential implications at the <a href="https://acousticalsociety.org/176th-meeting-acoustical-society-of-america/">Acoustical Society of America's 176th Meeting</a> this week.

You’ve heard of whale watching, but what about whale listening?...

Moths evade bat predators thanks to acoustic camouflage. Moths have thick fur that works as a kind of acoustic camouflage by absorbing nearby sounds. The fur guards against bats which are a primary predator of moths and which use echolocation to hunt. 

Thomas Neil, a researcher from the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> who specializes in bioacoustics, and a team of colleagues examined the fur of moths and butterflies as part of an ongoing study of moths and their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moths-darwins-theory-evolution/">evolved defenses</a>. 

Moths are a main source of prey for bats, and some moths have evolved special ears that detect the ultrasonic calls of bats. However, only a few species of moths have ears, and a vast majority of moths are deaf. 

Neil and his team wanted to find out how moths without hearing abilities are able to avoid predators like the bat. 

It turns out that moths have a furry coat that works as acoustic camouflage and muffles the sound of nearby bat calls. 

“Moth fur is thin and lightweight, and acts as a broadband and multidirectional ultrasound absorber that is on par with the performance of current porous sound-absorbing foams.” said Neil. 

First, Neil and his team used acoustic tomography, a kind of imaging technique that produces cross sections, and calculated the echo strength of two deaf moth<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/native-species-in-the-eastern-mediterranean-are-vanishing/"> species</a> and two butterfly species. 

The researchers then removed the thorax fur from the moths and butterflies, and while it had little impact on the butterflies, the lack of fur increased the risk of detection by 38 percent for the moths. 

“We found that the fur on moths was both thicker and denser than that of the butterflies, and these parameters seem to be linked with the absorptive performance of their respective furs,” said Neil. “The thorax fur of the moths was able to absorb up to 85 percent of the impinging sound energy. The maximum absorption we found in butterflies was just 20 percent.”Moths evade bat predators thanks to acoustic camouflage

The research sheds insight on how moths evolved to defend against bats and could help with creating effective sound absorbers.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.caryinstitute.org/">Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies</a> have found alarming levels of pharmaceutical compounds in stream insects. Out of 69 compounds, some were detected at concentrations that threaten the animals that feed on them, such as trout and platypus. Furthermore, the stream insects can pass the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/antidepressants-waterways-marine-life/">drugs</a> along to spiders, birds, and other streamside predators when they emerge as flying adults. 

Pharmaceutical pollution is present in surface waters worldwide. Most wastewater treatment facilities are not equipped to remove drugs from sewage, and aging septic tanks and pipes are contributing to the problem.

Study co-author Emma Rosi is an aquatic ecologist at the Cary Institute. 

“Stream life is swimming in a mixture of pharmaceuticals. Our study is the first to show that this chronic drug pollution can concentrate in aquatic insects and move up food webs, in some cases exposing top predators to therapeutically-relevant doses,” explained Rosi. 

The investigation was focused on six streams in Melbourne, Australia, where the  researchers screened for 98 pharmaceutical compounds including common drugs like antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, and NSAIDs. The team collected aquatic insects and riparian spiders for testing.

Study lead author Erinn Richmond is a freshwater ecologist at <a href="https://www.monash.edu/">Monash University</a> in Australia. “We focused on riparian spiders because they build their webs over streams and feed on adult aquatic insects as they emerge from the water,” said Richmond. 


The analysis of tissues detected up to 69 different pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic insects and up to 66 compounds in riparian spiders. Insects collected downstream of wastewater treatment facilities or in heavily populated areas with potential septic tank leakage had the highest drug concentrations. Across these sites, pharmaceutical concentrations were an average of 10 to 100 times higher compared to sites with less contamination.

Study co-author Jerker Fick is a chemist at <a href="https://www.umu.se/en/">Umeå University</a> in Sweden who analyzed the insect and spider samples. 

“Insect tissues had drug concentrations that were orders of magnitude higher than concentrations measured in surface waters,” said Fick. “We also found a diverse suite of drugs in spiders, indicating that drugs are passed from the water to prey to predator, thereby exposing other animals in the food web to drugs.”

Richmond added: “Pharmaceuticals were present in every insect and spider we tested - including those collected in Dandenong Ranges National Park. Even this seemingly pristine site was contaminated, likely because people live in the park's drainage area and visit the park.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unlikely-ocean-world">An unlikely ocean world</h2>



At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. Unlike other ocean moons such as Europa and Enceladus, which show clear surface signs of internal activity, Mimas displays no obvious hints of the liquid water beneath its ancient, crater-scarred exterior.



"Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-astrobiology">Implications for astrobiology</h2>



The ocean's recent formation makes Mimas a prime target for studying how oceans develop and potentially support life. This discovery adds another member to the exclusive club of ocean worlds in our solar system, each offering unique insights into the conditions necessary for habitability.



The research, published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a> journal, demonstrates how advanced orbital analysis can reveal hidden features of celestial bodies, opening new possibilities for understanding ocean formation throughout the cosmos.

Scientists discover unexpected young ocean on Saturn's cratered moon Mimas

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
