If you’re a male gray frog trying to find a mate, you’d better have a fast and steady call. That’s what female treefrogs usually go for. But when the crowd gets loud and chaotic, things change. The males that don’t sound all that great? They suddenly have a shot.



In quiet situations where females only hear two males at once, their preferences are clear. They go for the one with the sharper, more rhythmic call. 



But when four or even eight males are calling at once, things get messy. Female choices become unpredictable. This isn’t just a frog issue - it ties into a broader idea that scientists call “choice overload.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-frogs-face-chaos-in-the-chorus">Frogs face chaos in the chorus</h2>



In nature, frogs gather in large, noisy groups called choruses. Picture a shallow pond in spring, with dozens of males calling out at the same time. It’s the frog equivalent of a dating scene in a packed nightclub.



The researchers found that the crowded conditions of these choruses might be too overwhelming for females to reliably pick the best mate. It’s not that they stop caring - it’s that they can’t tell who’s who.



Professor Jessie Tanner of the <a href="https://www.utk.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Tennessee, Knoxville</a>, led a team studying how choice overload affects evolution.



“Because female mate choice can drive evolution, our results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unraveling-the-story-of-early-animal-evolution/">evolution</a> might happen more slowly than we thought before,” she said. 



“Some males that are fairly unattractive could still mate, especially if they take advantage of crowded spaces where females might be less able to discriminate between attractive and unattractive males.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-happens-when-choices-are-too-hard">What happens when choices are too hard?</h2>



The idea of choice overload is pretty common in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-behind-predicting-and-changing-human-behavior/">human behavior</a>. You walk into a store to buy toothpaste and face 50 brands. You either freeze, grab something random, or walk away. Same goes for dating apps with endless swiping.



“We wanted to understand how having to make mating decisions in crowded environments, where choice overload could be a problem, might drive the evolution of calls,” Tanner explained. 



“Since males that are chosen by females pass on their genes to the next generation, this mate choice can cause the population to change over time.”



When animals, like people, face too many options, their decision-making can break down. That opens up a chance for less attractive mates to get picked - not because they became more appealing, but because the chooser got overwhelmed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-choice-overload-in-other-animals">Choice overload in other animals</h2>



This isn’t just about frogs. Scientists are now looking at how this effect shows up in other animals. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-increasingly-stressed-over-the-past-century/">Bumblebees</a>, for instance, are on the list. So are wood roaches.



“Our lab is working to understand how choice overload and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-have-lungs-that-cancel-out-background-noise/">noise</a> may each contribute to the difficulty female treefrogs face in making mating decisions,” Tanner said. 



“We are also working to understand whether this choice overload is something that occurs generally in many different kinds of animals or is more specific to individual species.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-simultaneous-cricket-songs">Simultaneous cricket songs </h2>



Tanner, who has a background in both psychology and biology, first got into animal behavior while studying mate choice as an undergrad. She later became interested in sound - especially how it plays into animal communication.



That led to earlier work on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-male-crickets-go-silent-how-females-adapt-and-respond/">crickets</a>. Like treefrogs, male crickets use sound to attract mates. A study on cricket mating showed that noisy environments might either block females from hearing calls or make them too confused to pick. It was hard to tell which was causing the problem.



“During that study, it became clear that our work was consistent with both the possibility that many simultaneous cricket songs created noise that made it hard for females to hear, and the possibility that the females were experiencing choice overload,” Tanner said. “Our current work looks to disentangle those ideas.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-average-becomes-good-enough">When average becomes good enough</h2>



The research adds a new layer to how scientists think about evolution. Normally, stronger signals - like a faster frog call - are expected to win out and spread through the population over time. 



But if crowded conditions keep females from consistently picking the top performers, evolution slows down. Mediocre traits stick around longer.



That changes the math for survival. In nature, being the best isn’t always enough - and sometimes, being just okay is good enough, especially if the crowd’s loud and the choices are many.



The full study was published in the journal <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2025.0585" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences</a>.

Frogs settle for average mates when dating gets too noisy

Most animals are hurt primarily by habitat loss.  Trees are cut down; prairies are plowed into fields, poisons leak into water.  

Sometimes the situation is different.  Sometimes the trees are left as pillars of an empty cathedral, bathed in eerie silence.  So is the case with the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil and Paraguay. With less name recognition and much less land size than other iconic forests, the Atlantic Forest is often overlooked but it’s an amazing place quickly being emptied of its wondrous inhabitants.  Hunting is one of the major causes of biodiversity loss there, and in some areas many of the trees are left standing, the habitat though shrunk is somewhat intact.

The Atlantic Forest of Brazil is very different from the region’s more famous <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/president-brazil-amazon-rainforest/">Amazon Rainforest</a>.  For starters, the forest is located on the Atlantic side of Brazil, a place easier to access than the remote interior, also a region more heavily populated.  

The area of the Atlantic Forest was first colonized in the 1500s and it’s much closer to large human population hubs than western Brazil.  In fact, the Atlantic Forest is the first environment encountered by Portuguese colonists upon arrival in Brazil. Over 85 percent of the Atlantic Forest has been destroyed.  The remaining portion of the original forest still stands but suffers from over-exploitation.  What is called the Atlantic Forest is actually a mix of different habitat types.

The ‘forest’ can be Restinga forests, which are usually dominated by densely growing, short shrubby trees that stabilize normally windblown coastal dunes.  Restinga forests also sometimes grow in clumps of taller trees amidst the dunes, creating a savanna-like habitat. There are also seasonal tropical moist forests, which can vary from lowland to submontane and montane depending on the elevation the forest is found at.  Tropical moist forests of course are much hotter in their lowland incarnations than their montane forms at higher elevations. There are also dry Atlantic Forests that transition between the moist forests and the Caatinga desert to the northeast as well as the Cerrado savannas to the east of the forest.  The whole of the Atlantic Forest habitats is incredibly biodiverse and very unique. 

According to <a href="https://www.globalspecies.org/hotspots/display/1">Global Species</a>, the Atlantic Forest contains 20,000 plant species, 40 percent of which are found nowhere else on earth.  There are also 950 bird types found in the Atlantic Forest, including a few threatened parrot species. Some of the better known animals still living in the Atlantic Forest include Golden Lion Tamarins, a small orange monkey that as a child I wanted to trade my brother for on a trip to the Denver Zoo.  The monkey has a small, remarkably human-like dark face surrounded by a mane of leonine hair. According to the <a href="https://www.denverzoo.org/animals/golden-lion-tamarin">Denver Zoo</a>, by 1971 there were only 200 Golden Lion Tamarins left in the wild.  Smithsonian’s <a href="https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/golden-lion-tamarin">National Zoo</a> reports that now there are approximately 3,200 Golden Lion Tamarins in the wild, a third of which are descended from captive breeding programs.  Despite the rise in population, there are still too few of the tamarins to feel secure in their future and some animals of the Atlantic Forest are doing much worse.

<a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/09/180925140428.htm">Science Daily</a> reported last month on new research from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia</a> that tells the story of the decline of the Atlantic Forests, which originally measured about 1.1 million square kilometers (approximately 272,000,000 acres).  The forest is now merely 0.143 million square kilometers in size. Because the size is smaller, proximity to humans and developed areas has an increased impact on species living in the remaining forest; this is called edge effect.  

The new research on the Atlantic Forest was carried out by Dr Juliano Bogoni of the <a href="http://www5.usp.br/english/?lang=en">University of São Paulo, Brazil</a>, Professor Carlos Peres from the <a href="https://www.uea.ac.uk/">University of East Anglia</a> (UEA), and collaborators from the <a href="http://structure.ufsc.br/">Federal University of Santa Catarina of Brazil</a>.  The researchers analyzed populations of 500 mammals found in the Atlantic Forest region.  The results showed marked declines in many mammal populations, but some groups declined more than others.  

Among the most negatively impacted were large predators like jaguars and pumas as well as larger herbivores.  This trend has been shown in other parts of the neotropics. A classic example is Barro Colorado, an island in Panama that was created by flooding when the Panama Canal was created.  Barro Colorado is the location of the Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Institution and one of the most intensively studied places in the tropics. Jaguars and other large predators were some of the first to leave the island after it was created, changing the dynamics of a once larger piece of forest.  These examples from the tropics show the limitations of setting aside pieces of land for the protection of large mammals. Edge effects aren’t the only problems facing the small pieces of Atlantic Forest left though. 

<a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/09/180912202418.htm">Science Daily</a> reported on another piece of research in September.  The research, carried out by Tiago da Silveira Vasconcelos of São Paulo State University, Brazil and others, looked at the potential future of frogs and toads in the Atlantic Forest region.  There are currently 550 known species of frogs and toads known in the Atlantic Forest, 80 percent of which are found nowhere else on earth. Researchers looked at the distribution of 350 species in the Atlantic forest and another 150 species in nearby habitat.  With data in hand, researchers then made estimations as to the future for these species taking into account climate change predictions. 

Some species in the Cerrado area near the Atlantic Forest look like they’ll fare well in the future of a warmer climate, their habitat may even expand.  The expansion of one habitat comes at the cost of others though. 10 percent of frog and toad species in the Atlantic Forest may face extinction in the time period between 2050 and 2070.  As even more species go extinct in the Atlantic Forest, the empty quiet among the trees becomes more eerie. Even if some of the forest itself may remain intact in protected areas, too much may already have been destroyed to save more than the shadow of a once healthy ecosystem in the Atlantic Forest.

While not quite as big as a full-grown elephant, the long-extinct elephant bird was a behemoth of an animal.

Some species of elephant bird were 10 feet tall and weighed 1,000 pounds, but the birds were driven to <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/warming-mountain-birds-extinction/">extinction</a> due to hunting, habitat loss, and changes in climate. Elephant birds lived on the Island of Madagascar and went extinct anywhere from 500 to 1,000 years ago. 

Very little is known about these massive creatures, but a recent study of elephant bird skulls has yielded some surprising revelations, including that the birds were likely nocturnal. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas at Austin </a>conducted a study examining elephant bird skulls and compared them to other close relatives of the extinct species. 

The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. 

“Studying brain shape is a really useful way of connecting ecology -- the relationship between the bird and the environment -- and anatomy,” said Christopher Torres, the leader of the research. “Discoveries like these give us tremendous insights into the lives of these bizarre and poorly understood birds.”

Because so little research exists on the birds it was assumed that elephant birds were similar to large flightless birds alive today like the emu. 

The researchers analyzed the skulls from two species of elephant bird and used CT-imaging to create a digital brain reconstruction called an endocast. An endocast is a 3D model of the space within a cavity. 

Bird skulls wrap tightly around their brains and so endocasts provide researchers with an in-depth look at the different regions of the brain and its shaped. 

The elephant bird endocasts were then compared to endocasts of several close relatives of the species including the Kiwi, a flightless bird native to New Zealand. 

The optic lobe of the elephant bird was very small which came as a surprise to the researchers. It was similar to that of a Kiwi’s optic lobe, which suggests that the elephant bird was nocturnal and had limited vision. 

“No one has ever suspected that elephant birds were nocturnal,” said Torres. “The few studies that speculated on what their behavior was like explicitly assumed they were active during the day.”

The endocasts also gave the researchers a clue as to where the elephant birds lived as the larger species of bird had a large olfactory bulb which suggests that it lived in forests. 

The study sheds new light on a long since extinct bird, and by taking a closer look at the species researchers can get a better idea of what life was like on Madagascar long ago.

Elephant birds were likely nocturnal, new research shows

A new study has revealed that insect repellents containing picaridin are potentially lethal to salamanders. For the first time, the researchers have found that the presence of these repellents in surface waters are actually increasing the numbers of adult <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/florida-drone-combat-mosquitoes/">mosquitoes</a> by killing off salamanders, which provide mosquito control by feeding on the larvae.

Insect repellents are developed to defend against mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, and West Nile virus. The researchers set out to investigate the impact of two common insect repellents on salamander and mosquito larvae.

Study co-author Emma Rosi is a freshwater ecologist at <a href="https://www.caryinstitute.org/">Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies</a>.

“Use of insect repellent is on the rise globally,” said Rosi. “Chemicals in repellents enter aquatic ecosystems through sewage effluent and are now common in surface waters. We set out to understand the impact of repellent pollution on both larval mosquitoes and the larval salamanders that prey on them.”


The study was focused on Repel 100 Insect Repellent, which contains DEET, and Sawyer Premium Insect Repellent, which contains picaridin. In a lab, mosquito larvae and spotted salamander larvae that had just hatched were exposed to three varying concentrations of the chemicals, as well as a control treatment.


“The concentrations in our experiments are conservative; we prepared them based on unadulterated commercial formulations, not concentrations of pure active compounds,” said Rosi.

The mosquito larvae were not affected by the treatments and matured without any limitations. However, after four days of exposure to the repellent with picaridin, salamanders began to display signs of impaired development such as tail deformities. By day 25, between 45 and 65 percent of salamander larvae exposed to picaridin died.

“Our findings demonstrate that larval salamanders suffer severe mortality and developmental deformities when exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of commercially available repellent containing the active ingredient picaridin,” said study co-author Barbara Han.

“The expediency of salamander mortality was disconcerting. When studying the effects of a chemical on an amphibian, we usually look for a suite of abnormalities. We couldn't collect these data because the salamanders died so quickly.”

Standard tests known as LC50 tests are used to define a chemical's environmental toxicity. Based on one life stage of a single species, these tests measure how long it takes for half of a test population to die with increasing exposure to a chemical over four days.

Study co-author Alexander Reisinger is an assistant professor at <a href="http://www.ufl.edu/">University of Florida, Gainesville</a>.

“We observed heavy salamander mortality with picaridin, but not until after the fourth day of exposure. By the LC50 measure, picaridin would be deemed ‘safe,’ but clearly, this is not the case. If a substance doesn't kill organisms within the first few days of exposure, it can still be toxic and have ecological impacts,” explained Professor Reisinger.


Study lead author Rafael Almeida is a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University who conducted the research as a visiting PhD student at the Cary Institute. 

“The amount of repellents entering waterways peaks seasonally. If amphibians are exposed during a sensitive life stage, entire cohorts could perish. The population would not have a chance to recover until the following year. Meanwhile, mosquitoes would continue to reproduce. It suggests a negative feedback loop,” said Almeida.

“The effects of repellents containing DEET and picaridin need to be studied further to determine the extent to which these chemicals disrupt aquatic ecosystems and potentially increase mosquito-borne disease risk worldwide.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org/">Biology Letters</a>.

Insect repellent is killing salamanders that control mosquito numbers

A new study from the <a href="http://www.the-aps.org/">American Physiological Society</a> (APS) has revealed that larger tropical bee species fly better in hot conditions compared to smaller bees. The research suggests that a larger size helps certain <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-thrive-living-cities/">bee species</a> tolerate higher body temperatures.

Ectotherms are insects that rely on the external environment to control their temperature, while endotherms can physiologically warm themselves. Poikilotherms, the third category of insects, rely on environmental temperatures but can also control their own temperature by seeking sun or shade.

“Bees fall along this entire range,” explained lead author Meghan Duell, a graduate student at <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a>. “Most (insects) employ some means of behavioral thermoregulation. As body size increases, it's more likely that insects will be able to behaviorally and physiologically thermoregulate, especially in flying insects.”

“Bigger bees, like bumblebees or the larger species in the work I'm presenting, are partially endothermic. They can warm themselves by shivering their flight muscles to produce heat but do not constantly physiologically regulate body temperature.”

The excessive heat found in the rainforests of Panama, where the bees in this study originated, can limit the flight ability of bees.

“If bees stop flying as often in hot temperatures, the amount of time they have to forage (and therefore pollinate flowering plants) decreases. This can mean they aren't able to collect enough food to maintain the colony,” said Duell. “On a large enough scale, this negatively impacts the overall bee population and the plants they pollinate while collecting pollen and nectar for food.”

This means that better flying performance is an advantage for bees in hot climates. Bees that are unable to fly are forced to walk from flower to flower, where temperatures are even hotter on the surfaces of flowers and leaves.

Duell teamed up with Dr. Jon F. Harrison to assess how well bees fly at high temperatures and to investigate any variations based on body size. The researchers measured the air and thorax temperatures of 10 species of stingless bees, which varied in body mass between two and 120 milligrams. The experts also measured leaf and flower surface temperatures, as well as air temperatures in the sun and in the shade of the tropical forest canopy.

The researchers expected to find the smaller bees perform better in hot weather, but actually found that the opposite was true. These findings contradict the well-established theory that ectotherms are bigger in cold climates and smaller in hot ones. The large bees seem to have adapted to the hot temperatures by using their ability to maintain their own heat.

“Essentially the bigger bees are exposed to higher temperatures - sometimes in excess of 10 degrees Celsius hotter than air temperature - because they produce a lot of heat while flying,” said Duell. “That same heat producing ability gives them an advantage in cooler regions as well because they can be active earlier in the morning, later into the evening or on cooler days compared to smaller bees.”

The research was presented at the <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/aquatic-toxicology/conferences/aps-intersociety-meeting-comparative-physiology-complexity-i">APS Comparative Physiology: Complexity and Integration conference</a> in New Orleans.

Large bees fly better than small bees when it’s hot out

A 99-million-year-old insect preserved inside of a piece of amber is giving scientists new clues about how Earth's landmasses were arranged millions of years ago. In 2016, Shuhei Yamamoto studied the creature trapped inside of a penny-sized piece of Burmese amber from Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar, and discovered that it was a new species.

Yamamoto is a researcher at the <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/">Field Museum</a> and the lead author of a paper describing the new species. He explained that the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/fossilized-baby-snake-amber/">fossil</a> beetle is a rare find because it is one of the oldest known members of its family. Based on the fact that it is an ancient relative of the flat rove beetles in the Piestus genus, the species was named Propiestus archaicus.

Living alongside the dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous era, Propiestus had a flattened body, a long antenna, and short legs. It could be found beneath the bark of rotting trees - an environment similar to that of today's flat rove beetles.

“The antennae probably had a highly sensitive ability as a sensory organ,” said Yamamoto.

Smaller hair-like structures attached perpendicular to the antennae would have increased the beetle’s ability to feel out its surroundings. “There wouldn't have been a lot of space available in the beetle's habitat, so it was important to be able to detect everything.”

The flat rove beetle cousins of Propiestus that are alive today are found mostly in South America, with the exception of one species in Southern Arizona. Propiestus was found in Myanmar, which is literally on the other side of the globe from the Americas, but this has not always been the case.

Millions of years ago, Myanmar and South America were quite close to each other as part of the megacontinent Gondwanaland, which formed when the earlier megacontinent Pangea broke apart. Eventually, Gondwanaland broke apart as well, which is when the continents began to form as we  recognize them today.

Scientists have a clear understanding of which of today's continents made up Gondwanaland and which made up its sister continent, Laurasia. However, the detailed timing and pattern of the Gondwanaland split is not yet clear.

“Like koalas and kangaroos today, certain animals that we think lived in Gondwanaland are only found in one part of the world,” said Yamamoto. “Although Propiestus went extinct long ago, our finding probably shows some amazing connections between Southern Hemisphere and Myanmar. Our finding fits well with the hypothesis that, unlike today, Myanmar was once located in the Southern Hemisphere.”

Many inclusions in Burmese amber that have been researched in the last 15 years, including Propiestus, have traits in common with insects from Gondwanaland. By studying these tiny creatures trapped in amber, experts can begin to answer questions about the structure of the Earth millions of years ago.

“This fossil helps us understand life in the Mesozoic era,” said Yamamoto. “We need to think about everything from that time, both big and small.”

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/loi/tjsp20">Journal of Systematic Palaeontology</a>.

99 million-year-old beetle reveals how Earth’s landmasses shifted

“Not a mouse stirring,” says a sentinel in the first act of Hamlet when one of his confreres asks what he observed during his shift. 

Until very recent times, with the advent of rodenticides and modern pest control, his experience would have been a rare one. The house mouse (Mus musculus), that clever and pestilent rodent, has trailed humankind since even <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/114/16/4099">before the dawn of agriculture</a>. 

This commensal relationship has benefited the mouse and bedeviled generations of farmers and homeowners. These little evolutionary geniuses have been transported to nearly every landmass inhabited by humans. Even the sub-antarctic Antipodes Islands haven’t been spared the invasion—<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/feb/20/million-dollar-mouse-army-remote-antarctic-islands-hunt-pest">New Zealand is currently trying to eradicate them there</a>, as they have devastated native seabirds and insects. In turn, the house mouse has, indirectly at least, been advantageous to humans as well. The domesticated house mouse has become a model species in medical experimentation and studies on mice have facilitated numerous medical breakthroughs that have benefited our species as a whole. 

The progenitors of the modern house mouse diverged from the rats some <a href="http://www.informatics.jax.org/silver/chapters/2-2.shtml">10 million years ago</a> and the genus Mus, which contains the house mouse along with 37 other species, separated about 6 million years ago. Our friend Mus musculus originated in northern India <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1046/j.1420-9101.1996.9040391.x">as many as 900,000 years ago</a>. 

By 500,000 years ago, the house mouse had begun to diverge into discernible subspecies whose dispersals have been traced across the globe. Archaeological studies of mouse remains found in human settlements, as well as genetic studies of contemporary populations, have elucidated their migrations—and those of humans as well. The relationship between mice and humans has been characterized as synanthropic, a term derived from the Greek syn, meaning "together with" and anthropos, meaning "man." Indeed, like man, mouse has achieved worldwide dominance.

The sometimes convoluted routes that these creatures took in colonizing the Earth are fascinating. Long thought to have begun associating with humans at the dawn of the Neolithic Age some 12,000 years ago, when humans first began intensive agricultural efforts, <a href="http://www.pnas.org/content/114/16/4099">a recent study</a> suggested that in fact house mice began trailing their human providers some 3,000 years earlier. 

During this period, humans alternated between periods of sedentary existence, during which grains and other foodstuffs were stored, and more migratory habits. The study demonstrated that M. musculus domesticus cohabited with sedentary humans some 15,000 years ago. The remains of a related species, M. macedonicus, were more prevalent at sites used by migratory peoples in the Levant, while those used by more sedentary populations of the same era revealed far more M. musculus domesticus bones. This disparity was interpreted as an indication that the more anthropophobic M. macedonicus avoided larger settlements while the house mouse was drawn to them.

By the time that agriculture was in full swing, the three major subspecies had established themselves in different parts of the world. M. musculus domesticus, which had emerged in the steppes of Pakistan, radiated into the Fertile Crescent, the so-called cradle of civilization. This subspecies eventually came to dominate in western Europe. M. musculus musculus, the major subspecies in northern India, spread into China and other parts of central Asia. And M. musculus castaneus of Bangladesh took over in southeast Asia. Another subspecies, M. musculus bactrianus remained in southern India. 

The pathways of M. musculus domesticus and M. musculus musculus into Europe are even more intricate than their ancestors’ journey from the Indian subcontinent. Around 4,000 years ago, M. musculus domesticus swept out of the Fertile Crescent and through the Mediterranean and into western Europe along routes used by traders. 

One of the more intriguing relics of the spread of domesticus was the mandible of a mouse found in a shipwreck off the shore of Turkey, <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/230661621_On_the_origin_of_the_house_mouse_synanthropy_and_dispersal_in_the_Near_East_and_Europe_zooarchaeological_review_and_perspectives">encrusted in oxidized copper from ingots in the cargo</a>. This strongly supports the notion that trade flowing through the Mediterranean was a key factor in dispersing mice into western Europe. At around the same time, M. musculus musculus followed Chinese traders and colonized Russia and eastern Europe. Their overlap is still discernible as a hybrid zone along the German border.

From Europe, the radiation of the various subspecies closely followed those of colonial enterprises in North and South America, southern Africa, and the Antipodes, New Zealand and Australia. Though Vikings are known to have at least briefly colonized North America, and likely brought mice with them, their murine legacy is not apparent on that continent. A <a href="https://bmcevolbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2148-12-35">study of Viking mouse dispersal</a> that included Greenland, Iceland, and Newfoundland established the Viking genetic legacy in Greenland alone. There, musculus predominates, suggesting a continuum between modern and Viking populations of mice. However, the mice of Newfoundland and Iceland come from the domesticus line, suggesting that those populations were introduced by later traders or settlers from western Europe. So it is with the rest of North America. 

The East Coast and most of the rest of the United States appear to be exclusively inhabited by domesticus mice brought by European settlers beginning in the 15th century. The same is true of Australia. The one exception in North America is a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1848377">small area of California</a>. There, mice from the castaneus strain of East Asia predominate, testifying to the heavy immigration of people from Asia in this part of the country. 

The house mice of Japan and New Zealand have yet more complex histories. In Japan, the mice were long thought to be a separate species or subspecies, molossinus. However, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2833677">genetic analysis</a> has determined that they are hybrids of the musculus and castaneus groups, a relic of the trade between that country and the rest of Asia. New Zealand mice <a href="http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/276/1655/209">contain DNA from all three major subspecies</a>, an indication of its proximity to Asia and its close connections to Europe.

So it is that these tenacious commensals provide a record of our own colonization of the planet. When you hear a mouse stirring in the night, or find its droppings on the floor in the morning, just think: its ancestors, like ours, came from distant shores.

Researchers at <a href="https://www.dur.ac.uk/">Durham University</a> are reporting that dogs could be trained to sniff out malaria in people. While investigating ways to prevent the spread of the deadly disease, the experts found that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dogs-understand-words-mri/">dogs</a> could identify the scent of malaria in samples of socks worn by infected children.

The findings could ultimately lead to the first rapid, non-invasive test for malaria. 

"There is no test diagnostic that is 100% effective," Professor Steve Lindsay, study lead investigator, exclusively told <a href="http://earth.com">Earth.com</a>. "The best we have is Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays which can be used to identify very low densities of parasites, but this requires blood to be taken. It is too early to give costs for the dogs. But we see the dogs being used in malaria-free countries to help reduce the number of people carrying malaria parasites into the country. The cost of a malaria resurgence in a country that was once malaria free is huge."

Even though the research is in its early stages, the scientists hope that trained sniffer dogs can help pinpoint infected people faster so that they can be treated more quickly, which would also help to keep malaria from spreading to other countries.

“While our findings are at an early stage, in principle we have shown that dogs could be trained to detect malaria infected people by their odor with a credible degree of accuracy,” explained study lead investigator  Professor Steve Lindsay.

“This could provide a non-invasive way of screening for the disease at ports of entry in a similar way to how sniffer dogs are routinely used to detect fruit and vegetables or drugs at airports.”

“This could help prevent the spread of malaria to countries that have been declared malaria free and also ensure that people, many of whom might be unaware that they are infected with the malaria parasite, receive antimalarial drug treatment for the disease.”

For the study, the researchers used nylon socks to collect foot odor samples from seemingly healthy children between the ages of 5 and 14 in the Upper River Region of The Gambia in West Africa. The children were also tested for the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum in their blood.

Using the sock samples, a Labrador-Golden Retriever and a Labrador at the Medical Detection Dogs (MDD) charity were trained to distinguish between the scent of children infected with malaria parasites and those who were uninfected. 


Overall, there were 30 sock samples from malaria-positive children and 145 samples from uninfected children. The dogs were able to correctly identify 70 percent of the malaria-infected samples, as well as 90 percent of the samples without malaria parasites.

Study co-author Dr. Claire Guest is the Chief Executive Officer of Medical Detection Dogs, located in Milton Keynes, UK.

“MDD have had positive results training dogs to detect diseases including cancer and diabetes sugar changes by odor. This is the first time we have trained dogs to detect a parasite infection and we are delighted by these early results,” said Dr. Claire.

“The possible potential to train dogs to detect tropical disease where diagnostics are poor, such as leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis is huge. I believe that this study indicates that dogs have an excellent ability to detect malaria and if presented within an individual infected with the parasite or a piece of recently worn clothing, their accuracy levels will be extremely high. This is a reliable, non-invasive test and is extremely exciting for the future.”

Study co-author Professor James Logan is the Head of the Department of Disease Control at the <a href="https://www.lshtm.ac.uk/">London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine</a>.

“Worryingly, our progress on the control of malaria has stalled in recent years, so we desperately need innovative new tools to help in the fight against malaria,” said Professor Logan. “Our results show that sniffer dogs could be a serious way of making diagnosis of people who don't show any symptoms, but are still infectious, quicker and easier.”

The research, which was funded by the <a href="https://www.gatesfoundation.org/">Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation</a>, was presented at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Ahead of Halloween, wildlife officials are urging people to take precautions to protect wildlife. While fake cobwebs are meant to be a fun part of the festivities surrounding the holiday, they pose a risk to wild animals who can become entangled in the fabric.

Fake cobwebs can catch a number of species who live in close proximity to humans such as deer, squirrels, raccoons and insects. <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/wind-turbines-harm-birds-100-miles-away/">Birds</a> are likely at the greatest risk of entanglement, especially when cobwebs are hung off the ground and obstruct a bird’s flight path. Since the cobwebs are lightweight, they can also blow away and enter animals’ habitats.

Even if wild animals normally keep their distance from humans, they may be attracted to the area by other Halloween decorations. Pumpkins left outside are a tempting treat and may entice wild animals to a front yard where they can encounter the cobwebs. The Arizona Game and Fish Department even warned residents ahead of Halloween this year that they could be fined up to $300 if wild animals eat their Halloween decorations, according to<a href="https://kvoa.com/news/local-news/2018/10/24/residents-could-be-fined-for-wildlife-eating-halloween-decorations/"> News 4 Tucson</a>.

In one instance, an owl in California became entangled in a fake cobweb on Halloween night. When the owl tried to escape, he panicked and only became more ensnared. Thankfully, the Marin Humane Society responded to the scene and rescued him. He was then taken to WildCare in San Rafael for treatment and was returned to the wild. The family took down their cobwebs after the incident and decided to stop using the decorations permanently.

It’s not just Halloween that threatens wildlife. WildCare has seen animals clash with decorations throughout the year.

"It's a lot more common than people realize," said WildCare Director Melanie Piazza told<a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Real-Owl-Caught-in-Fake-Halloween-Spider-Web-132831773.html"> NBC Bay Area</a>. "We've had squirrels come in with Fourth of July banners wrapped around their tails and deer that have been stuck in Christmas lights."

Fireworks can also cause harm to wild animal through loud noises, toxins and direct obstructions. One Arkansas neighborhood famously brought in the New Year in 2011 with<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/04/us/04beebe.html"> thousands of dead birds falling from the sky</a>. Wildlife officials believe the fireworks caused the birds to become disorientated. The birds began flying at lower heights to avoid the fireworks and collided into homes and trees, resulting in their death.

People who want to enjoy their holidays do not need to forgo all decorations. For Halloween, people can hang fake cobwebs up from inside their windows or use other decorations such as jack-o’-lanterns with fake candles. This way the only ones who are spooked are the trick-or-treaters.

Fake cobwebs can cause more than just a spook to wildlife

Researchers have captured a rare sighting of a “ghostly” octopus gliding through the deep ocean waters off the coast of California. Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the experts spotted the white cephalopod near the Davidson Seamount in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The octopus is known as a dumbo, or an umbrella octopus, with wing-like fins and a “web” that fans out like an umbrella. The rarely-seen sea creature, which was caught on video by the <a href="https://www.nautiluslive.org/ev-nautilus">Exploration Vessel (E/V) Nautilus</a> team, looks like a cartoon apparition drifting across the dark sea.

The cephalopod was spotted during the first of a series of dives at the Davidson Seamount, when the ROV was deployed to examine an unexplored “oasis” that features fields of coral and sponge. The experts estimate that the octopus was about two feet in length.

“At first the ghostly octopod drifted past the camera on ROV Hercules flapping its pair of wing-like fins, then it inverted its web, spreading it like an umbrella to reveal the eight arms each with a single series of suckers and two series of finger-like muscular structures called cirri,” said the researchers.

The team is exploring an area near the Davidson Seamount, which is located 80 miles southwest of Monterey and 75 miles west of San Simeon, that stretches from 3,100 to 3,600 meters deep. The goal of the study is to document the presence of deep-sea life and to collect water and sediment samples.

According to E/V Nautilus: “Davidson Seamount is an inactive volcanic undersea mountain habitat off the coast of central California, and is considered to be an area of special national significance. One of the largest known seamounts in U.S. waters, the seamount has been called ‘an oasis in the deep’ in an otherwise flat seafloor, hosting large coral forests, vast sponge fields, crabs, deep-sea fishes, shrimp, basket stars, and high numbers of rare and unidentified benthic species.”

A rare look at a ghostly octopus off the coast of California

Researchers have captured a rare sighting of a “ghostly” octopus...

Researchers at <a href="https://www.fiu.edu/">Florida International University</a> (FIU) have discovered a new species of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/tiny-fossil-jurassic-crocodiles/">crocodile</a> for the first time in 85 years. The experts were studying the critically endangered slender-snouted crocodile when they realized that it was not just one species, but two.

Matthew Shirley is the team's lead researcher and a crocodile expert at FIU’s Tropical Conservation Institute.

“Recognizing the slender-snouted crocodile as actually comprised of two different species is cause for great conservation concern,” explained Shirley. “We estimate only 10 percent of slender-snouted crocodiles occur in West Africa, effectively diminishing its population by 90 percent.” 

“This makes the West African slender-snouted crocodile one of the most critically endangered crocodile species in the world.”

Slender-snouted crocodiles live in remote areas where they have little interaction with people. They camouflage themselves from potential predators in bodies of water with thick vegetation, which has made the task of collecting DNA samples from them very challenging. 


After analyzing the DNA and physical characteristics of the crocodile across six African countries, the scientists recognized two distinct species. Beyond the DNA evidence, the scientists found differences in the skull shape and scales of the crocodiles.

One group of slender-snouted crocodiles is unique to West Africa, and the other is unique to Central Africa.

Slender-snouted crocodiles have been classified on the IUCN list as “critically endangered” since 2014. They are threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and overfishing.

The FIU research will provide new insight into crocodile evolution and diversity, as well as conservation.

“We hope that this better understanding of slender-snouted crocodile evolution and taxonomy draws much-needed attention to the plight of this species, which has long been recognized as the least known crocodilian in the world,” said Shirley.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/">Zootaxa</a>.

New species of crocodile discovered for the first time in 85 years

Researchers at Florida International University (FIU) have discovered a new...

A new study by scientists at <a href="https://www.murdoch.edu.au/">Murdoch University</a> in western Australia has found that tourist activities are making dolphins more vulnerable to sharks and other predators. The experts are also warning that interactions with tourists may be disrupting the social and reproductive behavior of the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/dolphins-work-together-coordinate/">dolphins</a>.

The investigation, which was focused on spinner dolphins in Hawaii, revealed that these beloved dolphins spend more than 82 percent of the daytime in contact with vacationers. According to the researchers, chronic exposure to swimmers and boats is the depriving the dolphins of rest.

Study lead author Dr. Julian Tyne explained, “During periods of activity, animals usually exhibit enhanced brain function, which is often referred to as vigilance.”

“Vigilance is required for many activities including foraging, socializing and predator avoidance. As animals undertake these cognitively challenging activities they tire. This can manifest as a decreased ability to detect predators or prey.”

“To recover from their energetic and cognitively challenging night-time foraging activities, spinner dolphins need to rest.”

The spinner dolphin gets this name from the impressive acrobatic skill of launching out of the water and spinning - a very popular attraction for tourists in Hawaii. The new study has found that these particular dolphins are exposed to 25 percent more human interaction than any other type of dolphin.

“Dolphins were exposed to human activities within 100 meters for 82.7 percent of the daytime,” said Dr. Tyne. The dolphins were found to have an average of only ten minutes of rest between each group of tourists.

Bottlenose dolphins that live in coastal regions have also been found to suffer from a lack of rest due to interactions with humans. 

“Dolphins need time to recover from a disturbance to return to a pre-disturbed activity state,” explained Dr. Tyne. “For example, bottlenose dolphins in Milford Sound, New Zealand, required at least 68 minutes between interactions to return to their pre-disturbed behavior.”

“It is likely the short time intervals between successive exposure events are insufficient for spinner dolphins to return to a natural behavioral state between exposures.”

Rest deprivation can lead to impaired cognitive and decision making abilities among dolphins.

“Impaired cognition, may affect the success of this cooperative foraging strategy, by compromising the development and reinforcement of social bonds or to properly perceive prey patches during foraging activities,” said Dr. Tyne.

“Impaired cognition can adversely affect the social cohesion of a community. Moreover, mothers and calves may be particularly susceptible to rest deprivation if the ability of mothers to properly care for, feed and protect their calves is compromised.”

“Elsewhere, dolphin communities with considerably less cumulative exposure to human activities have had their natural behavioral patterns disrupted.”

For example, populations of bottlenose dolphins in New Zealand and Western Australia have been reduced by tour boats. According to Dr. Tyne, the spinner dolphins of Hawaii are under similar pressure, and signs of displacement are emerging.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org/">Royal Society Open Science</a>.

Constant human interaction makes dolphins vulnerable to sharks

As we <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aquarium-fish-caught-cyanide/">reported recently</a>, the destructive practice of poisoning fish with cyanide to capture them for the aquarium trade is sadly quite common.  Not only are some of the fish accidentally killed with the cyanide used, other species are poisoned and sometimes hiding fish are pried from broken reefs after being poisoned.  An estimated 14 million fish are killed before they can be sold as aquarium pets due to unsafe wild capture techniques. 

Interestingly, different fish poisons have been used for much longer periods with less devastating effects.  Cyanide in many ways is just a poor adaptation of ancient techniques to the modern world via chemistry and global economics.    

Different plants have been used to poison fish to catch as food the world over.  Yellow cheesewood, (Nauclea orientalis) is a tree native to Australia, Papua New Guinea and Southeast Asia.  Yellow cheesewood has a bark that was traditionally used in Australia as a poison added to slow moving water to stun fish making them easier to catch.  <a href="http://www.jstor.org/stable/4256362">One study</a> of Indigenous people in Guyana found that at least 11 species of plants were used by Amerindians for fish poison.  The practice of using toxins to catch fish is a global one, having been used independently in Africa, North America and Europe as well.

The practice of fishing with poison is ancient.  <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_toxins">King Frederick II</a> of Germany outlawed certain fish poisons in 1212 and other European countries followed suit a few centuries later.  Poison fishing has been practiced the world over much longer than that, with much of it probably predating any written record by centuries.        

Another type of fishing similar in some ways to the practice of using poison for fishing is dynamite fishing, or blast fishing.  Blast fishing is similar to fishing with poison superficially in that the explosion doesn’t always immediately kill fish. Instead, shock waves from an explosion stun fish that then float to the water’s surface to be captured.  This type of fishing began to spread across the world from contact between locals and European militaries. Soldiers sometimes used grenades to stun fish for quick meals during World War I, sometimes locals learned the technique this way and adapted it to dynamite.

Fishing with explosives is illegal in most of the world but it doesn’t stop people from trying anyway.  <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-peru-earthquake-fishing-idUSN0532212720080806">Reuters</a> quotes a Peruvian fisherman saying that the illegal practice of fishing with dynamite allows some to catch as many as 100 or 200 kilos of fish with ease.  <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/15/world/asia/philippines-dynamite-fishing-coral.html">The New York Times</a> reported earlier this year on the devastation fishing with bombs is causing in the Philippines.  The World Bank reported in 2015 that $8 in dynamite can capture about 400 fish in Tanzania. 

The thing that is interesting about these practices is that they aren’t carried out by large, highly commercial fishing vessels.  The New York Times article describes a man in an outrigger canoe fishing this way.  The Reuters article gives the impression that the people in Peru are largely small scale fishermen just supporting their families.  But $8 isn’t a largescale commercial investment. Another thing to note about dynamite fishing: it takes place in fresh water streams, rivers and lakes as well as in the ocean.

The Philippines are in the midst of the oceanic biodiversity of coral reefs.  With climate change, reefs are already threatened with bleaching. Overfishing is a continuous global problem hurting the Philippines as well.  Practices like blast fishing can exasperate threats already facing the local environment. Not only do blasts kill or stun fish indiscriminately, they kill other smaller organisms unused by fishermen and even blow apart the reef systems where fish live.  According to the New York Times, 90% of Philippine reefs surveyed from 2015 to 2017 were found to be poor or fair in condition, none found to be excellent.  

An unfortunate effect of fishing with explosives (or cyanide for that matter) as opposed to organic toxins is that it often kills fish, even if they aren’t eaten.  Some of the organic fish toxins used by many indigenous groups didn’t actually kill fish. The poisons only stunned fish long enough for them to be caught. Fish not picked out of the water to be eaten often survived the encounter, swimming away when the toxins wore off.  This isn’t always the case. Toxins vary widely by region but one thing is true: organic toxins eventually break down and they don’t harm the physical environment with explosions. 

Blast fishing is more dangerous, and in places like the Amazon Rainforest, the practice comes from contact with outsiders.  Fishing and hunting practices in many indigenous groups have changed from contact with outsiders less familiar with the region.  

<a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130213094115.htm">Science Daily</a> reported on research from Stanford in 2013 finding that contact from missionaries has changed taboos related to meat consumption in the Amazon region.  The change in consumption habits has in turn affected the biodiversity of the world’s largest tropical rainforest. One of the researchers, Jose Fragoso, told Science Daily:

“Based on field observations, I think that the removal of shamans has translated into more killing of animals… Our perception is that they are killing more animals that are not taboo, such as pigs, and also that they are making kills in the holy areas, which were previously off-limits.”

Along with the change in food taboos, technology has changed as well.  Hunting now may be done in the Amazon with a shotgun instead of arrows or blow gun darts.  Fishing may now be done with gunpowder instead of tree bark poison. Certain taboos and technical limitations are part of what made the lives of many indigenous peoples the world over sustainable.  These factors are certainly part of fishing. 

The Philippines, so hurt by blast fishing, is reported by the <a href="https://asiasociety.org/education/religion-philippines">Asia Society</a> to be the only Christian nation in Asia.  86% of the country is said to be Roman Catholic with another 8% belonging to other Christian sects.  Religion also plays a role in places like Fiji, <a href="https://news.mongabay.com/2014/11/reeling-in-religious-messages-how-faith-impacts-fisheries-in-fiji/">Mongabay</a> reports, a nation where both Christianity and fishing play important roles in daily life.  

To a degree, limiting the dangers of technology like dynamite and other explosives may depend on new laws but also the restrictions of new taboos.  In a world where traditional taboos limiting hunting, gathering and fishing have been eroded, it is important that new taboos based on sustainability and ethics are developed.  Despite blast fishing being illegal in the Philippines, it continues and ideas that fish are doing well despite marked declines are popular. Ideas of environmental health often seem to be driven by belief systems more than direct evidence.       

Mongabay reported in 2014 that the belief that abundance of fish is directly controlled by God was a commonly held one in Fiji.  Mongabay also reported on efforts to promote a different philosophy of humans being held responsible as stewards of nature, including fisheries.  Sometimes ideas like these hold more weight than scientific ones of sustainable harvest. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
