Insects are the tiny engines of life: flying, crawling, pollinating, and recycling. They sustain plants, hold food webs together, and enrich the soil. But despite the fact that insects are everywhere, they are quietly disappearing.



The crisis is no longer just in farmlands and cities. A new study from Colorado’s mountains shows steep declines even in wild, remote areas. That makes the warning louder: no <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insect-populations-dramatically-declining-around-the-world-rising-temperatures/">ecosystem</a> is safe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insects-decline-in-mountains">Insects decline in mountains</h2>



Keith Sockman, a biologist at the <a href="https://www.unc.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> at Chapel Hill, spent 20 years counting flying insects in a high Colorado meadow. 



The site sits above 3,000 meters, near wilderness, with little human disturbance. It has decades of weather records, which made it ideal for linking insect numbers with climate.



The results were stark. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/very-little-is-known-about-99-of-all-insects-on-earth/">Insect</a> numbers fell by an average of 6.6 percent every year. Over two decades, that meant a 72.4 percent drop. The main culprit was rising summer temperatures, especially warmer nights.



“Insects have a unique, if inauspicious position in the biodiversity crisis due to the ecological services, such as nutrient cycling and pollination, they provide and to their vulnerability to environmental change,” Sockman said. “Insects are necessary for terrestrial and fresh-water ecosystems to function.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-warmth-lingers-at-night">When warmth lingers at night</h2>



The study found a lagged effect. Hot summers hurt <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/insects-are-still-disappearing-and-there-are-hundreds-of-reasons-why/">insect</a> numbers the following year. Warmer nights were the most damaging. 



Over the past 38 years, summer low temperatures in the region rose by about 0.8°C per decade. That left insects with less recovery time from daytime heat.



This matches what scientists have seen with mountain butterflies. Even slight rises in nightly lows can strain species already adapted to narrow temperature ranges.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-than-farmland-losses">More than farmland losses</h2>



Germany’s famous study showed over 80 percent declines in farmed landscapes over 27 years. Those findings were often blamed on pesticides and habitat loss. 



Sockman’s work shows something different. Insects are collapsing even in a meadow with little human pressure. Climate itself may be enough.



“Several recent studies report significant insect declines across a variety of human-altered <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-farming-is-causing-many-insect-species-to-collapse/">ecosystems</a>, particularly in North America and Europe,” Sockman said. 



“Most such studies report on ecosystems that have been directly impacted by humans or are surrounded by impacted areas, raising questions about insect declines and their drivers in more natural areas.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-other-forces-at-play">Other forces at play</h2>



Climate change explains much, but not everything. Sockman points to other possibilities: shifts in vegetation as meadows change, rising carbon and nitrogen altering plant nutrition, or natural succession. 



The traps used in the study also captured mainly flying insects. That means the decline may not reflect every insect group, though the loss is still severe.



Seasonal timing shifts (when insects emerge earlier or later) could also play a role. But the data showed consistent drops that timing alone could not explain. Even if some insects shifted their activity to earlier in the season, the overall counts did not recover. 



Years with hotter summers still produced smaller populations the next year, which suggests the pressure is deeper than timing changes. It points toward long-term stress, not just seasonal mismatch, driving the collapse.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-mountain-insects-matter">Why mountain insects matter</h2>



Mountain ecosystems are fragile. Insects there need traits like cold tolerance, rapid development, and resilience to harsh winds. 



They pollinate alpine flowers, recycle nutrients in short growing seasons, and serve as prey for birds. If they vanish, the entire system weakens.



“Mountains are host to disproportionately high numbers of locally adapted endemic species, including insects. Thus, the status of mountains as biodiversity hotspots may be in jeopardy if the declines shown here reflect trends broadly,” Sockman said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-global-signal">A global signal</h2>



High mountains and high latitudes are warming faster than the rest of the planet. They act like islands, with no higher ground for species to escape to. What is happening in Colorado is likely happening elsewhere too. 



The losses here are not local - they are global warnings, signaling risks for ecosystems from the Andes to the Himalayas and across Arctic regions where insects support both wildlife and human livelihoods.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-insects-in-mountains">Protecting insects in mountains</h2>



Insect monitoring must expand beyond farmland and suburban areas. Remote ecosystems also need attention. Long-term studies like Sockman’s are rare but essential for tracking change.



The message is urgent. Insects are not resilient enough to withstand unchecked warming. If they vanish, food webs will collapse, pollination will falter, and ecosystems will unravel. Their fate is tied to ours.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ecy.70187" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ecology</a>.

In cities across the globe, rats are considered to be major pests that seem to be everywhere you turn. These rodents are known to spoil food, spread disease, and even start fires.

Despite these problems, a new study has found that rats are actually the least studied wildlife in New York City. “The most difficult challenge of urban rat research is finding suitable research sites (e.g. municipal businesses and dwellings) to obtain access to rats long enough to generate robust science,” explain the study’s authors in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jue">Journal of Urban Ecology</a>.

In order to conquer this challenge, the researchers have offered rather significant incentives to property owners in order to study the rats on their premises. These perks include free and confidential extermination services – after the rats have been studied, of course – and up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to research sites in Manhattan.

With greater access to private residences or businesses, researchers would be able to set up their expensive equipment and monitor the rats’ activity privately. Because rats are so perfectly adapted to their environment, they’re incredibly difficult to research without the proper set up. They can easily hide and avoid human contact.

The researchers believe that a better understanding of the ecology of city rats could lead to improvements in pathogen and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mathematical-fight-plant-diseases/">disease</a> surveillance, as well as a better understanding of their population distribution.

“We neglect to study them at our own peril,” says Michael Parsons, lead author of the study. “No war has ever decimated 1/3 of the human population. Rats have.”

Whether or not another black plague is in the future (let’s hope for “not”), studying these pests that inhabit many of the areas where we live and work can only help us to better understand them.

Why rats in major cities aren’t even being monitored

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rampant-overfishing-gulf-california/">Overfishing</a> has devastating effects on aquatic species, and some fish stocks never recover. Scientists collected commercial whaling records to evaluate the devastating impact extreme fishing had on whale populations in the 20th century. The analysis will be used to prevent other marine populations from meeting the same fate. 

Decades of over harvesting whales for blubber, oil, and meat in the 20th century led to large collapses in the numbers of whale populations. 

Previous studies indicated that a sharp decline in population numbers can be expected when the group demonstrates a shift in body size or an irregular rise and fall in numbers. However, this research was conducted using experimental systems and had not been established in the wild. 

The research team examined data on the number and size of whales to see if signs of a rapidly declining whale population were present before the collapse was documented. Ecologist Christopher Clements of the <a href="http://www.uzh.ch/en.html">University of Zurich</a> led the team.

"We looked at data on blue, fin, sei and sperm whales and found significant declines in body size, with sperm whales taken in the 1980s four metres shorter on average than those in 1905,” Clements explained. "This means that warning signals were detectable up to 40 years before a population collapse.”

The findings of this study provide further evidence that a shift in the average body size of a marine population is a signal that the population is at risk of collapsing.

"Our technique could be used to help provide other species of conservation concern. Moreover, it could allow interventions to be put in place to stop this happening,” said Clements.

How collapsing whale populations can help save other species

Overfishing has devastating effects on aquatic species, and some fish...

With the ever-present threat of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/republican-party-denial-climate-change/">climate change</a> having an effect on countless plant and animal species around the globe, it’s often hard to turn your focus to just one species. But what if that species was adorable beyond all belief? Enter: the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius). It is a small rodent – but a very cute one – that lives in woodlands, scrub, and hedgerows. It eats flowers, nuts, and insects and sleeps for most of the day, as it’s nocturnal.

Currently, this tiny rodent is a European Protected Species and is being monitored by volunteers at sites in England and Wales. The monitoring effort is part of the <a href="https://surveydata.ptes.org/login">National Dormouse Monitoring Programme</a> – and if you look at a picture of these adorable creatures you may just want to sign up. The dormouse monitors make their counts during the day, when the animals are generally sleeping.

Unfortunately, despite these efforts, a recent analysis of data from 400 UK sites between 1993 and 2014 discovered a 72% decline in dormouse population. This adds up to an annual rate of decline of almost 6%.

Scientists believe the decline is ongoing, and signifies the possibility that dormice are endangered in the UK – however, the species is a top priority for conservation. “Dormice are declining despite strict protection and widespread efforts to conserve one of Britain’s most endearing woodland mammals,” says Cecily Goodwin, lead author of the<a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1365-2907"> Mammal Review </a>study.

The authors believe that a host of problems are responsible for this decline, including climate change and habitat loss. “We think that appropriate woodland management could make a big difference," says senior author Prof. Robbie McDonald.

As efforts continue to track and monitor these tiny animals, it’s likely that the decline will continue until further efforts are made to prevent habitat loss. For now, let’s enjoy these cute critters while they’re still around.

This adorable rodent is on the brink of extinction

A species of migratory grassland birds in South America known as Bobolinks have been experiencing population declines in recent years. Scientists know that the population health of migratory birds is difficult to determine during winter months when the species migrate, but a new study from <a href="http://www.americanornithologypubs.org/loi/cond?code=coop-site">The Condor: Ornithological Applications</a> has taken a new approach to combat this issue. Rosalind Renfrew of the <a href="https://vtecostudies.org/">Vermont Center for Ecostudies</a> and her colleagues analyzed the carbon compounds in the feathers of Bobolinks in order to determine what these birds eat after they migrate south in the winter. 

These <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-carbon-form-strong-elastic/">carbon</a> compounds are determined by what types of plants the birds eat while their feathers are growing during their winter molt.

Because rice contains a different ratio of carbon isotopes than many of the native grasses in South America – where the Bobolinks spend the winter – the researchers could analyze the feathers’ carbon compounds to figure out the birds’ diets. 

The researchers collected feather samples from wintering Bobolinks in a rice-producing region and a grassland region, as well as from breeding Bobolinks in North America. Through analyzing the isotope levels, they found distinct differences in the birds’ diets between regions with and without rice production.

In North America, the winter diet of most Bobolinks consisted of much more non-rice sustenance. However, their rice consumption was highest late in the winter, when rice is getting close to harvest time and the birds are bulking up for their northern migration.

The issue with rice is that – although it provides much-needed calories – it also may increase the birds’ exposure to pesticides or harm from farmers who see the birds as pests. These factors may be playing a part in the Bobolink’s population decline.

According to the researchers, the keys to preventing any further decline are protecting and maintaining native grasslands, reducing toxic pesticide application, and potentially compensating farmers for crops they lose to the feeding birds. The loss of one species can have devastating effects on an entire ecosystem, so it is imperative that scientists and farmers work together to adapt viable solutions to this problem.

Reasons behind bird population decline revealed in their feathers

Eating fish has been shown to have many health benefits and the latest may be controlling arthritis symptoms, a new study concludes.

People with rheumatoid arthritis who consumed <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-recognizing-faces/">fish</a> twice a week had lower disease activity, such as swollen and tender joints, than those who ate fish never to less than once a month.

The new study was published in the journal<a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)2151-4658"> Arthritis Care &amp; Research.</a>

Increased servings of fish were linked with incrementally lower levels of disease activity, according to the study of 176 patients.

Frequency of fish consumption was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire assessing usual diet in the past year, the study said.

"If our finding holds up in other studies, it suggests that fish consumption may lower inflammation related to rheumatoid arthritis disease activity," said Sara Tedeschi, lead author of the study and a rheumatologist at <a href="https://hms.harvard.edu/">Harvard Medical School</a> and <a href="http://www.brighamandwomens.org/">Brigham and Women’s Hospital</a> in Boston. "Fish consumption has been noted to have many beneficial health effects, and our findings may give patients with rheumatoid arthritis a strong reason to increase fish consumption."

It’s the latest study outlining potential benefits of eating fish.

Eating plenty of salmon, mackerel and sardines prevents Alzheimer’s disease by boosting blood flow, according to a recent study published in the <a href="http://www.j-alz.com/">Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease</a>.

Using brain scans, researchers found that omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish can actually increase blood flow to the parts of the brain that control memory and learning. These are also the very same regions that are attacked by Alzheimer's.

People who eat a lot of oily fish are also better at acquiring and understanding new information, the study said. They are also better at acquiring and understanding knowledge, the researchers found.

Why eating fish may ease arthritis symptoms

Eating fish has been shown to have many health benefits...

Mountain lions don't like encountering humans any more than humans like bumping into them on hiking trails, a new study found.

The findings are particularly valuable as human development encroaches on lion habitat and drives up the number of human-puma encounters, the authors said.

"We exposed pumas in the Santa Cruz mountains to the sound of human voices to see if they would react with fear and flee, and the results were striking," said Justine Smith, lead author of the paper published in the online edition of the journal <a href="http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/">Proceedings of the Royal Society B</a>. “They were definitely afraid of humans.”

Smith, who led the study as a graduate student in environmental studies at <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/">UC Santa Cruz</a>, and her colleagues placed audio equipment at puma kill sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

When mountain lions came to feed, their movements triggered motion-activated technology that broadcast recordings of people talking, and a hidden camera captured the puma's responses. They broadcast recordings of Pacific tree frog vocalizations as a control.

"We found that pumas almost always ran from the sound of humans--and almost never ran from the sound of frogs," said Smith, now a postdoctoral researcher at <a href="http://berkeley.edu/">UC Berkeley</a>. In 29 experiments involving 17 pumas, the pumas fled in 83 percent of the time as soon as they heard human voices, and only once upon hearing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-highly-evolved-skeletons/">frogs</a>.

The study also reveals changes in puma feeding behavior that could have implications for their well-being in human-dominated landscapes, as well as their impact on prey populations, particularly deer. The results build on previous work showing higher kill rates and lower feeding times in more human-populated areas.

"We found that pumas took longer to return to their kills after hearing people, and subsequently reduced their feeding on kills by about half," said Smith. "Those behavioral changes are significant, as our previous work has shown that they cause pumas to increase their kill rates by 36 percent in areas with high human activity."

It is the first study to experimentally link the fear of humans to feeding behavior in large carnivores, said Chris Wilmers, Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz and a senior author on the study.

"Fear is the mechanism behind an ecological cascade that goes from humans to pumas to increased puma predation on deer," said Wilmers, a wildlife ecologist who studies the cascading effects large carnivores can have on their prey. "We're seeing that human disturbance--beyond hunting--may alter the ecological role of large carnivores. As we encroach on lion habitat, our presence will likely affect the link between top predators and their prey."

Mountain lions are afraid of humans, flee when they hear voices

Mountain lions don't like encountering humans any more than humans...

The sight of a herd of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/malaria-india-mosquitoes-cattle/">cows</a> in a pasture may seem like a peaceful and relaxed setting. However, researchers have identified grazing cattle as a complex system influenced by friction within the group. 

Complex systems research can be applied to a diverse set of disciplines. This approach focuses on the behavior of whole structures, and not just the individual components of a system. 

Erik Bollt is the director of the <a href="http://webspace.clarkson.edu/~ebollt/Website-C3S2/index.html">Clarkson Center for Complex Systems Science</a> and a professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering. 

Bollt pointed out that a cow performs three main activities on a regular day which include eating, standing while digesting food, and lying down to rest. There would seem to be nothing complex about this daily routine. However, Bollt and his team looked into the underlying issues which complicate matters.

"Cows move and eat in herds to protect themselves from predators," said Bollt. "But since they eat at varying speeds, the herd can move on before the slower cows have finished eating. This leaves these smaller cows facing a difficult choice: Continue eating in a smaller, less safe group, or move along hungry with the larger group. If the conflict between feeding and keeping up with a group becomes too large, it may be advantageous for some animals to split into subgroups with similar nutritional needs."

With the help of biologist Marian Dawkins, the team decided to use a cost function in their mathematical model to capture the behavior of the cattle. 

"Some findings from the simulation were surprising," Bollt said. "One might have thought there would be two static groups of cows -- the fast eaters and the slow eaters -- and that the cows within each group carried out their activities in a synchronized fashion. Instead we found that there were also cows that moved back and forth between the two."

According to Bollt, this is caused primarily by two competing rhythms within the system. 

"The large-sized animal group had a faster rhythm and the small-sized animal group had a slower rhythm. To put it into context, a cow might find itself in one group, and after some time the group is too fast. Then it moves to the slower group, which is too slow, but while moving between the two groups, the cow exposes itself more to the danger of predators, causing a tension between the cow's need to eat and its need for safety."

The model used by this research team may be used to analyze other herding animals. The study, published this week in the journal Chaos, may ultimately lead experts to a new approach by which to analyze human behavior in groups as well.

Cow drama! Herd behavior influenced by friction within the group

How long have cats been domesticated as lovable pets? It's difficult to know for sure. Ancient fossils do not reveal whether <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cats-older-women-match/">cats</a> were wild or domesticated, making the domestication timeline difficult to track. 

A new study uses DNA analysis of ancient cat remains to show that populations of cats from both Egypt and the Near East contributed to the gene pool of today's domestic cats. 

The taming of cats is traditionally associated with ancient Egypt. Paintings from 3, 500 years ago depict cats perched underneath chairs in household settings. 

However, there is evidence to suggest that cats may have been domesticated around 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. Grains were grown and stored in homes, which attracted rodents and the wild cats that preyed on them. It is possible that cats were adopted for pest control at this time. 

A complete skeleton of a cat was found in Cyprus buried alongside human remains from 7500 BC. This provides further evidence that cats may have been tamed by early communities in Southwest Asia.

For the current study, researchers set out to track the distribution of specific cat DNA markers. The researchers used data from 209 ancient and modern cats spanning 9000 years, from the Mesolithic period to the twentieth century. The fossils were from Europe, Africa, Asia, and Egyptian cat mummies. 

The team discovered that the genetic signatures were widespread throughout time and location, which is evidence that people took cats with them as they relocated.

One of the DNA signatures analyzed by the team - which had first appeared in Turkey - showed up more than 6, 000 years ago in Bulgaria, 5,000 years ago in Romania, and 3,000 years ago in Greece. 

A second genetic marker, which was first seen in Egypt, had reached Bulgaria between the first and fifth centuries. It was found in a seventh-century sample from Northern Europe, and appeared in an eighth-century sample from Iran. 

In addition to these two major DNA breakthroughs, the researchers were able to determine that tabby cat markings became common by the 1700s. The study also showed that people started breeding cats in the 1800s.

Carlos Driscoll of the Wildlife Institute of India points out that this research "strengthens and refines previous work.” The study, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol/">Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution</a>, provides an unprecedented historical look at the DNA of cats.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/125-million-dinosaur-fossil-found-spain/">dinosaur</a> age was likely ushered in by huge pulses of volcanic activity which triggered the Triassic mass extinction, according to a new study.

The Triassic extinction approximately 200 million years ago was one of the largest mass extinctions of animal life on record with a casualty list that included large crocodile-like reptiles and several marine invertebrates, the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a> study said. It is still a mystery why dinosaurs survived, but they filled the vacancies left by the now extinct wildlife species, alongside early mammals and amphibians.

The extinction has long been linked to a large and abrupt release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but the exact source of this emission has been unknown.

The discovery of volcanic rocks of the same age as the extinction suggested volcanic carbon dioxide emissions as an important contributor to the extinction event. 

Researchers from the Oxford University Department of Earth Science worked with the <a href="http://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter </a>and<a href="http://www.southampton.ac.uk/"> Southampton University</a> to trace the global impact of major volcanic gas emissions and their link to the end of the Triassic period. The findings link volcanoes to the repeated large emissions of carbon dioxide. 

Volcanoes emit mercury gas emissions, which spread globally through the atmosphere, before being deposited in sediments. Any sediments left during a large volcanic event would be expected to have unusually high mercury content.

The new research analyzed mercury levels from six sediment deposits from the United Kingdom, Austria, Argentina, Greenland, Canada and Morocco. Five of the six showed a large increase in mercury content beginning at the end-Triassic extinction horizon, with other peaks observed between the extinction horizon and the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, which occurred about 200,000 thousand years later.

Elevated mercury emissions also coincided with previously established increases in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, indicating CO2 release from volcanic degassing.

“These results strongly support repeated episodes of volcanic activity at the end of the Triassic, with the onset of volcanism during the end-Triassic extinction,” said Lawrence Percival, lead author and geochemistry graduate student at Oxford University. “These results strongly support repeated episodes of volcanic activity at the end of the Triassic, with the onset of volcanism during the end-Triassic extinction.”

The research “enhances our understanding of this event, and potentially of other climate change episodes in Earth's history,” Percival added.

Study: Volcanic activity led to dawn of dinosaurs

The dinosaur age was likely ushered in by huge pulses...

When in their territory, chimpanzees patrol their domain in groups – much for the same reason that wolves hunt in packs. By working together, these animals are able to be a much more significant force than when they’re working alone.

These patrols are a big deal, and consist of multiple individuals (usually male chimps) that walk the edges of their territory, and sometimes deep into their neighbors territory as well. Researchers have observed that during these patrols, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chimpanzees-pass-skills-generation/">chimpanzees</a> become hypervigilant. Their behavior suggests that they are actively searching for neighboring chimpanzees. And if a patroller finds members of a rival group, they will attack and sometimes kill them.

Given these behaviors, its believed that territorial boundary patrolling by chimpanzees is an incredible example of their group-level cooperation. 

Researchers were wondering what the benefit is to individual males who choose to go on these patrols, as they are often dangerous and put the patrolling chimps in harms way. Overall, the patrols benefit the group by increasing territory size and food supply – but researchers noticed that individuals are not punished if they choose not to perform patrol duty.

In an effort to understand how male chimps are able to cooperate at this level, Keven Langergraber of <a href="https://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State University</a> and a team of researchers combed through twenty years of data on who participated in patrols in a 200-member group of chimpanzees in Kibale National Park, Uganda. 

The group combined analyses of patrol participation with the results of paternity testing on 122 group offspring. They found that patrolling actually paid off in the long run because it increased group size, which is an important factor in inter-group competition. 

“The Ngogo chimpanzees patrol and kill neighbors more frequently than any other chimpanzee group,” says John Mitani of the <a href="https://www.umich.edu/">University of Michigan</a>, who has studied this group of chimpanzees for 22 years.

Over a ten-year stretch of time, the Ngogo chimpanzees expanded their territory by 22 percent, and killed 13 other chimps from a neighboring group. Because of this success, they benefited from an above average food supply and long life expectancies. 

The study found that males varied in how often they patrolled. High-ranking individuals, who were generally in better physical condition, patrolled frequently. Males with more offspring also patrolled more often, although many males without offspring still participated.

But patrolling takes energy and can be life threatening for a chimp. In addition, time spent patrolling means less time for eating or mating with females. So why would males without offspring patrol at the benefit of the relatives of other individuals?

The researchers believe they do this because in this large group, reproduction is not exclusive to the high-ranking males. So males who had no offspring yet still patrolled may be rewarded by being able to reproduce in the future, as increasing the size of the group means more chances to mate in the long run.

“We know that humans have means ranging from gossip to drastic punishment to aid cooperation in group settings,” says Langergraber. “The puzzle has been to explain cooperation in animal societies, where shirking would seem an attractive option. Most studies have focused on short term benefits of cooperation,” he adds, “but our study shows the benefit of long-term data collection, and also that we still have a lot to learn from these chimpanzees.”

Chimpanzees patrol their territory... and it pays off

Fossils of an extinct species from the Triassic Period are the missing link that connects frogs, toads, and other amphibians to wormlike creatures with a backbone and two rows of sharp teeth, according to a new study.

The fossil, named Chinlestegophis jenkinsi, was from the oldest relative of the most mysterious group of amphibians: caecilians. They are limbless, colorful, serpentine carnivores that today live underground and range in size from 6 inches to 5 feet.

Paleontologists used 3-D X-rays to reassemble the fossil remains of two C. jenkinsi specimens discovered in Colorado. Parts of a skull, spinal column, ribs, shoulder and legs survived in the fossils of the first specimen. Only the skull was distinguishable in the second specimen.

The study, published in <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>, expands the known history of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frogs-highly-evolved-skeletons/">frogs</a>, toads, and salamanders by at least 15 million years. It also closes a major gap in early caecilian evolution by connecting them to stereospondyls, animals with toilet-seat heads that were the most diverse amphibian group during the Triassic era more than 200 million years ago.

"Our textbook-changing discovery will require paleontologists to re-evaluate the timing of the origin of modern amphibian groups and how they evolved," said Adam Huttenlocker, senior author of the study and an assistant professor at the<a href="http://keck.usc.edu/"> University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.</a>

The story of the stereospondyl order was considered a dead-end because, although widespread during the Triassic Period, the animals were believed to be unrelated to anything alive today, the new study said. The two recently discovered fossils dispel that theory and suggest that the amphibian lineage of today evolved from a common ancestor some 315 million years ago.

Before C. jenkinsi, scientists had found only two other caecilian fossils from the Age of Dinosaurs and -- unlike the two recently unearthed -- those came later and had reduced limbs, more closely resembling their contemporary living relatives, the study said.

"Because humans are also vertebrates, we enhance our understanding of our own evolutionary history and genetic heritage when we gain understanding of the amphibian lineage," said Jason Pardo, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the <a href="http://www.ucalgary.ca/">University of Calgary</a> in Alberta, Canada.

The burrows the fossils were preserved in were almost two inches wide, meaning they could not have been very big, the study reported. 

Their bullet-shaped skulls were just under an inch long, so the ancient caecilian was probably about the size of a small salamander, Huttenlocker added.

During the summer, this central Colorado area would have been scorching, which is probably why these subterranean animals thrived. Big dinosaurs like early relatives of the Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops could not have existed in such conditions, Huttenlocker said.

"The ancient caecilians lived in these burrows deep in the soil down to about the level of the water table so that they could keep wet and avoid the extreme aridity from the dry season," Huttenlocker said. "I'm going back to Colorado this summer and hope to find more animals with more complete skeletons. We'll find one. This is just the initial report."

New fossils provide missing link to mysterious amphibians

The crew of a fishing boat in the Southern North Sea pulled up a surprising catch in May: the remains of a two-headed baby porpoise.

The find was reported in the most recent issue of <a href="http://www.hetnatuurhistorisch.nl/het-museum/nieuws/siamese-bruinvistweeling-uit-de-noordzee.html">Deinse</a>, the journal for the <a href="http://www.hetnatuurhistorisch.nl/">Natural History Museum of Rotterdam</a>.

The Dutch fishermen didn’t keep the two-headed baby porpoise, because they thought it was illegal for them to hold onto the remains, but they did take a number of photos that were shared with the journal. 

Scientists used the photos to identify the little cetacean as a harbor porpoise – or rather, a pair of conjoined twin harbor porpoises. Harbor porpoises are a protected species in the North Sea, which is the body of water between the United Kingdom and Norway, just north of the Netherlands.

Dr. Erwin Kompanje, the Rotterdam museum’s curator of animals, told the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a> that he believes the twins may have died not long after birth. They may have drowned because the two brains were unable to swim in the same direction, or the heart may simply have been unable to pump enough blood, he said. 

Conjoined twins are very rare among wild animals, and porpoises and other cetaceans are no exception. 

“Even normal twinning is rare; there’s no room in the womb of the mother for harboring more than one baby,” Kompanje said.

The twins pulled up from the North Sea are the first recorded case of conjoined twins among harbor porpoises, and the 10th among cetaceans generally, a group that includes other porpoise species, dolphins and whales.

The true number of cases is unknown, however. Most conjoined twins born to those species may die in infancy or even before birth, scientists said.

For the scientists who authored the paper in the museum’s journal, the loss of the remains was a tragedy. So few cases appear that they may never see another in their lifetime, Kompanje said.

“For a cetologist, this a real horror,” he told the Post.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-today-s-climate">Lessons for today's climate</h2>

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Economic impact</h2>



Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. Tourism suffered as lakes became fishless and forests declined. EPA economic analyses from the period documented repair costs mounting into billions annually.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The solution: government action and technology</h2>



Transformation from crisis to success required unprecedented cooperation between governments, industries, and environmental groups.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Clean Air Act of 1990</h2>



The turning point came with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, signed by President George H.W. Bush. This represented a fundamentally new approach to environmental regulation, as documented in EPA historical records.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cap-and-trade success</h2>



Instead of mandating specific technologies, the 1990 amendments introduced something revolutionary: a cap-and-trade system for sulfur dioxide emissions. EPA program documentation shows this market-based approach set overall limits but allowed companies to trade emission allowances.



The genius was harnessing market forces to find cost-effective pollution reduction. Companies reducing emissions cheaply could sell excess allowances to those facing higher costs. Research published in environmental economics journals and EPA progress reports shows this resulted in dramatic SO2 reduction at a fraction of projected costs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Technology advances</h2>



Policy provided the framework, but technology made reductions possible. Studies in atmospheric science journals document the widespread adoption of flue gas desulfurization systems ("scrubbers") that removed sulfur dioxide before it reached the atmosphere. By the 2000s, new installations could remove over 95% of SO2 emissions, according to EPA technical reports.



The push coincided with cleaner energy development. Natural gas produces fewer sulfur compounds than coal. Wind and solar, emerging in the 1990s, captured growing market share, reducing reliance on high-sulfur coal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-we-don-t-hear-about-it-today">Why we don't hear about it today</h2>



Why did acid rain disappear from headlines? Simple: the problem was largely solved.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Success doesn't make news</h2>



There's an old journalism saying: "If it bleeds, it leads." Environmental success stories don't generate urgency like crisis reporting. Media attention shifted to other challenges: climate change, plastic pollution, and biodiversity loss. There's only so much environmental anxiety the public can absorb, and newer concerns replaced acid rain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mission accomplished</h2>



The primary reason is beautifully simple: interventions worked. EPA monitoring data shows sulfur dioxide emissions dropped over 90% since 1990. Academic research published in environmental science journals confirms pH levels in formerly affected areas returned closer to normal. This represents one of history's most dramatic environmental recoveries. Studies by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation show fishless lakes now support healthy populations. Forests recovered, and building damage slowed dramatically.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
