Young aspen trees in Yellowstone are doing something they have not done in almost 100 years. Rather than sprouting and being eaten back to nubs by elk and bison, they're actually growing into tall, adult forest trees rising up towards the canopy.



This matters more than it might seem, because it shows what happens when a missing piece of an ecosystem returns.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-yellowstone-aspens-and-elk">Yellowstone, aspens, and elk</h2>



In the 1920s, people <a href="https://www.yellowstone.org/wolf-project/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">eliminated wolves in Yellowstone</a>. At the time, with limited scientific knowledge, managers believed it was the right thing to do.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/from-wolves-to-dogs-did-domestication-begin-without-human-help/">Without wolves</a>, elk herds grew very large. Elk love to eat aspen shoots - the tender young growth is highly palatable to them.



For roughly 70 years, elk browsed aspen sprouts down to stub height, and the trees couldn't grow. 



If you had walked through Yellowstone in the 1980s, you would have seen many tiny aspen shoots covering the ground, but almost no young trees gaining height. 



The forest's regeneration was stalled. Old trees died, and no new ones replaced them.



In 1995 and 1996, park managers reintroduced wolves into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstone-supervolcano-eruption-study-sparks-new-debate-on-where-and-when-it-will-erupt/">Yellowstone Park ecosystem</a>. Scientists hoped and wondered whether this would change anything for the trees.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-aspen-matter-to-yellowstone">Why aspen matter to Yellowstone</h2>



Aspen groves provide habitat for many species. Birds nest in them. Beavers eat the bark and use the wood for dams. Butterflies and moths lay eggs on the leaves. 



Their canopy admits enough light for wildflowers and shrubs to grow beneath. When it rains, aspen groves hold water in the soil better than some other forest types.



In short, when aspen return, dozens of other species benefit. More trees support more insects, which in turn support more birds, enriching the ecosystem.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-checking-the-trees-three-decades-later">Checking the trees three decades later</h2>



<a href="https://fwcs.oregonstate.edu/users/luke-painter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Luke Painter</a>, an ecologist at <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon State University</a>, sought clear answers. His team returned to 87 aspen stands across Yellowstone that scientists had previously surveyed. 



They measured thousands of young trees, looked for bite marks, and counted how many stems were tall enough that elk could no longer reach the tips.



About a third of these stands now have many tall young aspens pushing toward the canopy. 



"About 26 of the 87 aspen stands we examined had large numbers of tall saplings throughout, a remarkable change from the 1990s when surveys found none at all," Painter said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-wolves-matter-to-yellowstone-aspens">Why wolves matter to Yellowstone aspens</h2>



Breaking it all down, the conclusions of this study are pretty simple. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wolves-move-pups-across-mountains-to-adapt-to-climate-pressure/">Wolves hunt elk</a>. When wolves came back, two things happened. First, elk numbers declined from unusually high levels. Second, elk changed their behavior. They spent less time in the same areas feeding.



With fewer elk and shorter feeding bouts, more aspen shoots survived long enough to exceed the browsing zone - about six to seven feet high. 



Once a sapling reaches that height, elk cannot easily reach the growing tip. The tree continues to grow.



"The reintroduction of large carnivores has initiated a recovery process that had been shut down for decades," Painter explained.



Scientists call this a <a href="https://www.nature.com/scitable/knowledge/library/trophic-cascades-across-diverse-plant-ecosystems-80060347/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trophic cascade</a> - when adding or removing one species causes changes that ripple through the whole system.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-some-places-recover-others-don-t">Some places recover, others don't</h2>



Unfortunately, not every aspen stand has recovered yet. Some valleys still have many short, heavily browsed shoots, because it's not only elk eating them anymore. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstones-iconic-bison-have-merged-into-a-single-herd/">Bison herds have grown</a>, and bison browse on aspen as well. They are strong enough to break young trees. 



"Increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new constraint to aspen in some areas," Painter confirmed.



Additionally, winter snow depth varies; droughts stress trees; bears and mountain lions also hunt elk; and hunting outside the park influences elk distribution. 



All of these factors interact, which is why some sites show strong recovery, others show moderate recovery, and a few have changed very little.



The key pattern is that places with many tall saplings experience little browsing, and aspen groves that remain popular eating grounds today stay short. 



This fact is the strongest indication that tree recovery is linked directly to wolf presence, not solely to weather or soil conditions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-proof-in-the-measurements">Proof in the measurements</h2>



Painter's team did not rely on casual observation. They used the same methods as earlier researchers, measuring the same plots. 



They counted recruitment - when young trees surpass browsing height and begin progressing toward maturity. This measure is crucial. Sprouts are insufficient if they never grow; without recruitment, the forest cannot replace itself.



The results are robust. After being stalled for most of a century, Yellowstone's aspens are increasing in height. In recovering stands today, you will see saplings - six, eight, or ten feet tall - that were not present in the 1990s.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-yellowstone-s-aspens">The future of Yellowstone's aspens</h2>



"This is a remarkable case of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-viruses-found-in-yellowstones-hot-springs-may-be-near-the-root-of-all-life-on-earth/">ecological restoration</a>," Painter concluded. "Wolf reintroduction is yielding long-term ecological changes contributing to increased biodiversity and habitat diversity."



Trees grow slowly, so even with wolves restored, it will take decades for these young aspens to form a full-grown forest. 



Some areas might never fully recover if bison numbers continue to rise or if the climate becomes too hot and dry.



Thanks to the work of Painter and his team, scientists are now certain that restoring the Yellowstone predator has restarted aspen forest regeneration. Not everywhere and not perfectly, but enough to be measured, creating hope for the future.

Feeling fulfilled and in control might help preserve memory as you age. A major study tracking over 10,000 UK adults aged 50 and older for 16 years found a clear trend. Those with higher well-being consistently scored better on memory tests.



The research used data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA). Participants without dementia at baseline were tested every two years on memory and self-reported well-being. 



The results showed that higher well-being predicted better memory, but not the other way around.



“In the context of an aging population, understanding factors that may protect and maintain healthy cognitive <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-does-happiness-come-from-it-depends-on-who-you-are/">function</a> is critical for enhanced population health and health policy development,” said lead author Dr. Amber John from <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emotional-well-being-supports-memory">Emotional well-being supports memory</h2>



Well-being included four dimensions: control, autonomy, self-realization, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/judging-your-happiness-makes-you-less-happy/">pleasure</a>. Each domain had its own influence on memory.



Control was consistently tied to both immediate and delayed recall across nearly all time points. Autonomy and self-realization followed a similar pattern, with strong ties to future memory performance. Pleasure also showed predictive value, especially in delayed recall.



This adds nuance. It's not just “feeling good” in general that matters. Specific aspects of well-being, like having choices or enjoying life, each play roles in protecting memory.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-good-memory-does-not-boost-well-being">Good memory does not boost well-being</h2>



The team used cross-lagged models to check whether memory influenced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/happiness-influences-online-shopping-habits/">well-being</a>. Their results showed no consistent evidence that memory scores predicted later well-being.



Dr. John explained this in the paper. The lack of evidence may reflect that memory loss must reach a certain threshold before it affects well-being. People in this study had healthy brain function when it started.



Delayed memory scores at a few early waves did predict well-being at the next round, but the pattern was not stable across all nine waves.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-memory-link-remains-after-adjusting-factors">Memory link remains after adjusting factors</h2>



One key strength of the research is its handling of other influencing factors. The authors adjusted for depression, age, gender, ethnicity, and education. They also excluded participants who later developed dementia or died during the follow-up.



Even after these adjustments, the link between higher <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/who-is-happier-being-single-men-or-women/">well-being</a> and better memory was consistent. This suggests that the association is not merely due to low mood or health decline.



The study authors also noted that people with lower baseline well-being, poorer memory, and lower education were more likely to drop out. This highlights the real-world challenge of studying ageing populations over time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-against-memory-loss">Protecting against memory loss</h2>



The results support the view that emotional and psychological resources matter for brain health. They add to earlier findings that link positive mental health with lower dementia risk.



Well-being may serve as a protective buffer against memory decline. It may support brain health through biological mechanisms like reduced inflammation or healthier cardiovascular systems.



This finding echoes previous studies showing that depression and anxiety speed up cognitive decline. Promoting well-being might serve as a protective measure.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-limitations-and-future-research">Study limitations and future research </h2>



Although the study spans 16 years and includes over 10,000 participants, it has limits. The well-being measure was self-reported, and the memory tests were simple.



The results show association, not causation. As the authors note, future research could use methods like Mendelian randomization to explore causality. Genetic data may reveal whether well-being plays a direct role in protecting memory.



Also, third factors such as lifestyle habits or socioeconomic background might influence both well-being and memory.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-targeted-mental-wellness-programs">Targeted mental wellness programs</h2>



“This study represents an important step toward understanding the interplay between wellbeing and memory over time,” said Professor Joshua Stott.



“Going forwards it would be fantastic if this research can build on the foundations of ongoing memory research to potentially inform strategies supporting cognitive health in aging populations - that is the aim,” noted Dr. Emily Willroth.



The findings open up the possibility of designing targeted mental wellness programs. Structured mindfulness, increased social connection, and life-purpose coaching could become tools for healthy cognitive aging.

Positive life outlook helps protect memory in later life

Can farms produce enough food to feed us while still leaving space for wildlife? A new proposal says they can.



By setting aside one-fifth of farmland for nature, and tweaking everyday practices on the rest, we can help wildlife recover without sacrificing the food on our tables.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farming-with-wildlife-in-mind">Farming with wildlife in mind</h2>



The plan comes from ecologists at the <a href="https://www.ceh.ac.uk/">UK Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology</a> and the University of Alcalá in Spain. Study co-author Professor James Bullock elaborated on the importance of the research.



“Reversing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-calls-for-global-change-to-stop-biodiversity-loss/">biodiversity loss</a> and degradation of ecosystems is essential both for nature as well as long-term global food security. But there is no single silver bullet for nature recovery and so far it has been unclear how to integrate rewilding into agricultural landscapes," said Professor Bullock. 



“Our proposed approach moves beyond land sparing versus land sharing. We believe rewilding can be interwoven into agricultural landscapes and could be key to maintaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/increasing-plant-based-food-production-would-have-extremely-positive-impact/">food production</a> in a way that is sustainable in the long term for people and the planet.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dedicating-land-to-nature-recovery">Dedicating land to nature recovery</h2>



According to the study, fostering rewilding approaches alongside farming could create agroecological landscapes that accommodate biodiversity while remaining resilient and functionally connected. Certain incentives would encourage farmers to adopt this approach.



“While setting aside land for nature recovery could potentially be made a legal requirement for farmers and landowners, there is more likely to be acceptance and success of rewilding if there are incentives in the form of payments for ecosystem services and tax deductions,” noted Professor José María Rey Benayas, lead author on the study.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-farming-needs-wildlife">Why farming needs wildlife</h2>



Modern farming has greatly increased food production since the 1940s. But this has often come at the expense of nature. 



Clearing land, using heavy fertilizers and pesticides, and removing natural features like hedgerows have pushed many plant and animal species to the edge.



This loss doesn’t just affect wildlife - it disrupts vital services that farms depend on, such as healthy soil, natural pest control, and water retention. As these services decline, the long-term productivity and resilience of farming systems are put at risk.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cost-of-declining-wildlife">The cost of declining wildlife</h2>



Across Europe and beyond, once-common species are disappearing from farmland. For example, the U.K. has lost over 40 million birds since 1970, and wild bee populations have declined in more than half of European countries, according to multiple long-term surveys.



These animals aren’t just part of the scenery - they’re key to food production. Birds eat crop pests. Bees and other insects pollinate the flowers that develop into fruits and vegetables. Their loss means greater reliance on artificial fertilisers, pesticides, and expensive manual labour.



Bringing wildlife back isn’t just a conservation goal - it’s a practical step toward more affordable and reliable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mixed-cover-crops-may-be-the-future-of-sustainable-farming/">farming</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-steps-to-farming-alongside-wildlife">Steps to farming alongside wildlife </h2>



The researchers suggest a four-part plan that links nature conservation with everyday farming. 



First, they recommend reserving at least 20% of farmland for nature. This space would include large patches of woodland, wetlands, and species-rich grassland to form strong core habitats. 



Second, these patches should be connected by green corridors - such as hedgerows, ponds, and strips of scrubland - that allow wildlife to move, feed, and reproduce.



Third, they propose protecting small hotspots within working fields. This would involve setting aside about 10% of cropped land for flower strips, beetle banks, and bird perches, bringing the total to the 30% global restoration goal. 



Finally, they call for small changes in daily farming practices, like reducing chemical use, planting flowers for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollinators-face-extinction-risk-due-to-climate-change/">pollinators</a>, and letting livestock graze more freely to help spread seeds and support healthy soil.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rewilding-has-benefits-for-farmers">Rewilding has benefits for farmers</h2>



Many European regions cannot host bears or bison. However, smaller species such as lynx, wildcat, or European hare can still boost ecosystem health. Choosing the right mix depends on local conditions.



Helping wildlife can pay off in more ways than one. When farms support natural habitats, they often see practical benefits in return. 



Better soil retains more water and nutrients, which supports stronger <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farmers-can-help-make-crops-more-resilient/">crops</a>. Pollinators and natural predators of pests can help increase yields in nearby fields. 



Farmers may also spend less on fertilizers and pesticides, lowering overall input costs. In some places, governments might provide payments or tax breaks to reward efforts that support biodiversity and ecosystem services.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-making-room-for-wildlife">Making room for wildlife</h2>



Reaching the 20% target may be challenging for small farms, but collective action can make it achievable. At the same time, each region will need to adapt the plan to fit its local conditions. 



Areas with heavily degraded farmland have the most to gain, while places with traditional, low-impact farming may require fewer changes. 



The researchers emphasize that this is just a starting point - but the message is clear: making room for wildlife alongside farming can help secure both indigenous species and food for the future.

Farming for wildlife: How traditional practices can protect nature

Heart disease still tops the list of causes of death in the United States, taking more than 700,000 lives in 2022 alone. 



Millions of people undergo computed tomography (CT) of the chest each year for reasons unrelated to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-is-worse-for-the-heart-than-cocaine/">heart</a>, but these scans also serve as silent heart scans. They capture calcium deposits that warn of future coronary artery trouble.



Dr. Hugo Aerts and his team at <a href="https://www.massgeneralbrigham.org/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mass General Brigham</a>, working with the <a href="https://www.usa.gov/agencies/u-s-department-of-veterans-affairs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs</a>, built an algorithm named <a href="https://ai.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/AIoa2400937" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AI‑CAC</a> to turn overlooked data from CT scans into an early warning system.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-calcium-on-scans-predicts-heart-risk">Hidden calcium on scans predicts heart risk</h2>



The white flecks of <a href="https://www.rsna.org/news/2024/march/cac-predicts-heart-attacks-and-strokes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coronary artery calcium</a> are mineral scars of past plaque damage. Decades of studies show that any calcium is a red flag, and a score above 400 can triple the 10‑year risk of death or heart attack .



Despite this, routine nongated chest CTs are generally read for lung or spine findings, leaving the heart unattended. That gap means people often discover their risk only after <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-this-amount-of-coffee-helps-prevent-heart-disease-and-diabetes/">symptoms</a> appear, when lifestyle changes or statins have less time to work.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-finds-calcium-that-doctors-often-miss">AI finds calcium that doctors often miss</h2>



AI‑CAC is built on deep learning, a method that lets software teach itself patterns by reviewing thousands of labeled images. The developers trained the network on scans from 98 VA hospitals, capturing a wide mix of scanners and patient body types.



On an 8,052‑scan test set the model spotted any calcium with 89 percent accuracy and correctly split scores above or below 100 in 87 percent of cases. Those numbers rival expert readers yet require a fraction of the time, seconds rather than minutes.



“Millions of chest CT scans are taken each year, often in healthy people.” said Aerts. He believes that teaching the algorithm to comb existing archives can “enable physicians to engage with patients earlier, before their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-disease-remains-the-leading-cause-of-death-worldwide/">heart</a> disease advances to a cardiac event.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heart-scan-scores-predict-death-risk">Heart scan scores predict death risk</h2>



Patients whose AI‑CAC score topped 400 faced a 3.49‑fold jump in <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.120.046289?doi=10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.120.046289" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">10‑year all‑cause mortality</a> compared with those who scored zero. 



Four independent cardiologists reviewed a random sample of these high‑score scans. The experts agreed that 99 percent of the patients would benefit from cholesterol‑lowering medication, underscoring the model’s clinical relevance.



The strength of the project lies in its size and diversity; many prior calcium‑AI efforts used gated scans from a single vendor. A 2021 Stanford‑led <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41746-021-00460-1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a> showed similar accuracy, but with just a few hundred test cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-veterans-to-everyday-clinics">From veterans to everyday clinics</h2>



The dataset came exclusively from veterans, a group that is older and more often male than the general public. 



Study lead author Dr. Raffi Hagopian acknowledged the limitation, yet called it an ideal first step. He noted that VA imaging archives already hold “millions of nongated chest CT scans” suited for opportunistic screening.



Rolling the tool into other health systems will require validation across broader demographics, different scanner models, and varied radiation doses. That work is starting, with several academic centers planning head‑to‑head tests later this year.



“Using AI for tasks like CAC detection can help shift medicine from a reactive approach to the proactive prevention of disease,” said Dr. Hagopian. He pointed to the potential for fewer <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/heart-cells-grown-in-space-may-help-heal-damaged-hearts/">heart</a> attacks, lower costs, and better shared decision‑making between patients and clinicians.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heart-scan-tool-fits-existing-guidelines">Heart scan tool fits existing guidelines</h2>



The 2019 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7734661/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">guideline</a> already endorses starting statin therapy when a calcium score reaches 100 in select patients. 



Today, getting that number usually means scheduling a separate gated scan that insurers may not cover, limiting uptake.



AI‑CAC circumvents the hurdle by reading the scans people have already undergone for other reasons. If future trials confirm its performance, a simple software update in the radiology workstation could make calcium scoring routine.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-opportunities-and-concerns">Opportunities and concerns </h2>



Automating calcium detection promises to relieve radiologists of a tedious task and <a href="https://www.rsna.org/news/2024/march/cac-predicts-heart-attacks-and-strokes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flag</a> high‑risk patients before they leave the imaging suite. However, false positives could provoke anxiety or unnecessary follow‑up, so clinicians will need clear protocols.



Data security is another concern; VA hospitals operate behind stringent firewalls, and private centers will expect equally robust safeguards. 



Finally, health systems must decide who owns the liability when an algorithm misfires and how to reimburse the extra counseling that follows each alert.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ai-and-heart-scans-in-more-hospitals">AI and heart scans in more hospitals</h2>



The next milestones include testing AI‑CAC in community hospitals, monitoring whether early statin prescriptions actually change outcomes, and integrating the calcium score into electronic health record dashboards alongside blood pressure and cholesterol. 



Developers are also exploring whether the neural network can measure aortic and valvular calcium in the same pass, extending its reach without extra radiation.



Clinicians have long known that calcium foretells trouble, but counting those specks by hand never scaled. AI‑CAC offers a path to put that knowledge to work for every patient whose chest has ever met a CT scanner.

AI spots heart disease warning signs in routine chest scans

Heart disease still tops the list of causes of death...

Every parent remembers the first cry of their newborn - a sound that seems to carry both the spark of life and a hint of distress. Does this cry reflect pain? And if so, is that pain anything like what an adult feels?



Pain is not simply a physical sensation. It also involves emotional distress and cognitive evaluation. To feel pain in the way adults understand it, the brain must process it through multiple networks.



A recent study by <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCL</a> and <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> maps how babies’ brains develop the ability to sense and interpret pain. The work reveals that these abilities do not all appear at once. 



The experts scanned 372 preterm and term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-do-infants-connect-with-the-world-it-all-starts-with-the-feet/">infants</a> between 26 and 42 weeks postmenstrual age. The brain activity of the babies was compared to adults using MRI data from two massive neuroimaging databases.



“Pain is a complex experience with physical, emotional, and cognitive elements - each part responsible for different aspects of it,” explained lead researcher Professor Lorenzo Fabrizi.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pain-networks-develop-at-different-times">Pain networks develop at different times</h2>



Pain involves three networks: sensory-discriminative, affective-motivational, and cognitive-evaluative. These networks connect different brain regions that identify, respond to, and interpret pain. 



The research shows that these networks mature at different rates. The sensory-discriminative network develops first; by 34 to 36 weeks, infants can detect the location and intensity of pain. 



The affective-motivational network matures between 36 to 38 weeks, enabling emotional responses to painful stimuli. 



The cognitive-evaluative network develops last, only after 42 weeks, meaning that even full-term infants lack a complete understanding of pain.



According to the study, sensory connections rapidly strengthen from 34 weeks, affective ones follow, while cognitive links remain sparse even at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/singing-to-babies-is-a-powerful-way-to-boost-their-mood/">term</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pain-sensitivity-grows-fast">Pain sensitivity grows fast</h2>



The research also&nbsp;shows a strong increase in both the number and strength of brain connections from 26 to 42 weeks. Still, only the oldest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/caffeine-offers-new-hope-for-preventing-sudden-infant-deaths/">infants</a> reached adult-like proportions in any network.



By 38 to 40 weeks, sensory pathways exceeded adult connection strength. Affective pathways also strengthened sharply. 



However, cognitive pathways - those tied to conscious thought - were weaker than adult levels in 40 percent of cases. This confirms that infants may feel pain but struggle to understand it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preterm-babies-respond-more-to-pain">Preterm babies respond more to pain</h2>



A 2023 study had shown that preterm infants do not habituate to repeated painful procedures. The new study explains this with brain development. Preterm babies may lack the cognitive tools to make sense of pain or modulate it.



“Preterm babies may be particularly vulnerable to painful medical procedures during critical stages of brain development... including the role of tailored pain management,” noted Professor Fabrizi.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-pain-networks-form-in-a-baby-s-brain">How pain networks form in a baby's brain</h2>



The sensory network matures earlier due to early development of spinal nociceptive circuits. These help babies sense noxious input quickly. 



According to the authors, axonal growth, synaptogenesis, and myelination start in sensory areas before spreading to others.



The affective network, which processes emotional pain, matures later. Connections involving the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex appear only after 32 weeks.



Cognitive networks, involving the prefrontal cortex, are the last to mature. These support conscious awareness and memory of pain. Some frontal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-before-they-crawl-babies-can-feel-their-own-heartbeat/">connections</a> are still missing at birth, especially in preterm babies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-this-matters-for-neonatal-care">Why this matters for neonatal care</h2>



This study makes it clear: term infants are not mini-adults in how they feel pain. Their brains are still forming essential networks. 



The researchers show that even full-term babies have weaker cognitive pain processing than adults. That means clinical teams must time procedures carefully. 



For preterm infants especially, poorly timed painful interventions can have lasting consequences.



The brain’s pain-processing systems continue developing after birth. Full maturation, especially in the cognitive domain, may take months or even years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-babies-feel-pain-differently-from-adults">Babies feel pain differently from adults</h2>



This research shifts how we understand infant pain. Newborns feel it, but they experience it differently. Recognizing this gap between sensory input and cognitive processing is vital.



Caregivers and clinicians must act with this knowledge, protecting newborns during this delicate stage of neural development.

The universe keeps hiding most of its mass, yet it leaves telltale fingerprints. Astronomers are about to read them with NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, slated to launch in 2027. 



Roman’s survey camera will sweep the sky for more than 160,000 distorted galaxy images, which act as natural zoom lenses forged by gravity. 



Lead author <a href="https://physics.wustl.edu/people/bryce-wedig" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bryce Wedig</a> of Washington University in St. Louis said the haul will “let us measure the small‑scale structure of the cosmos in ways that were impossible before.” 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-dark-matter-the-basics">Understanding dark matter - the basics</h2>



According to commonly accepted theory, dark matter is an invisible form of matter that does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it undetectable through conventional electromagnetic observations. Yet, it exerts a significant gravitational influence on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/visible-matter-dark-matter-evolved-together-big-bang/">visible matter</a> in the universe. 



Scientists first inferred its existence by noticing discrepancies in the rotation speeds of galaxies. Stars at the outer edges of galaxies move much faster than expected based on the observable mass alone. 



To account for this anomaly, astronomers proposed the presence of an unseen mass - dark matter - that makes up approximately 85% of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/theory-gravity-exists-without-mass-so-dark-matter-does-not-exist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">total matter</a> in the universe.



Despite its abundance, dark matter remains one of the most elusive components in cosmology. Astronomers hope that the Roman Space Telescope will put an end to the search.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bending-light-unmasks-dark-matter">Bending light unmasks dark matter</h2>



The first trick for the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/missions/roman-space-telescope/nasas-roman-to-peer-into-cosmic-lenses-to-better-define-dark-matter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roman telescope</a> involves <a href="https://esawebb.org/wordbank/gravitational-lensing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gravitational lensing</a>. This is Einstein’s idea that mass curves space so much that it warps passing light. 



When a hefty foreground galaxy lines up with a more distant, fainter one, the background glow stretches into arcs, crescents, or even full rings.



Physicists already know that visible stars and gas account for only about one‑sixth of a galaxy’s pull. 



The missing piece is dark <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11214-024-01087-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">matter</a>, an unseen substance with a gravitational pull that corrals galaxies and keeps <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old/">clusters</a> intact.



Roman’s lenses act like laboratory scales. By comparing the brightness and positions of multiple images of the same galaxy, astronomers can infer how much invisible mass is sprinkled through the foreground system.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roman-will-detect-tiny-dark-matter-clumps">Roman will detect tiny dark matter clumps</h2>



Dark <a href="https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/533/2/1687/7721636" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">matter</a> is not expected to sit smoothly. Simulations predict countless clumps - some as light as a million Suns, orbiting larger halos like cosmic goose bumps.



Tiny <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-did-dark-matter-come-from-the-answer-may-be-surprisingly-simple/">clumps</a> create milliarcsecond kinks in the stretched background arcs, a pattern called substructure. 



Spotting enough of those kinks across Roman’s sample lets researchers test whether dark matter is made of sluggish “cold” particles or warmer, faster ones that would erase the smallest clumps.



Wedig’s team estimates that Roman will deliver roughly 500 “gold‑standard” lenses that are bright and sharp enough to weigh individual clumps down to about 108 solar masses. 



That is an order of magnitude <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2403.13881?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">finer</a> than what the Hubble Space Telescope managed with a few dozen prime systems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wide-views-with-sharp-resolution">Wide views with sharp resolution</h2>



Each Roman frame covers 0.28 square degrees, about 200 Hubble fields stitched together, yet keeps Hubble‑class resolution. The wide‑field instrument achieves this by packing 18 infrared detectors into a honeycomb the size of a door.



During its High‑Latitude Wide‑Area <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/roman-space-telescope/high-latitude-wide-area-survey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Survey</a>, Roman will take single 146‑second snapshots through four infrared filters. 



Simulations show an average of 27 strong lenses hiding in every exposure, enough to amass the 160,000‑lens trove in under two years of sky time.



Wedig’s team also notes that hundreds of the lenses will be perfect for deep follow‑up: stronger distortions, cleaner arcs, and higher signal‑to‑noise. 



These choice targets will let scientists trace clumps at even smaller mass scales, tightening the leash on competing dark‑<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-if-it-exists-has-a-strictly-limited-lifetime-new-study-says/">matter</a> models.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-surveys-found-fewer-and-blurrier-lenses">Past surveys found fewer and blurrier lenses</h2>



Hubble and ground‑based surveys such as <a href="https://web.physics.utah.edu/~bolton/slacs/What_is_SLACS.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SLACS</a> and BOSS Emission-Line Lens Survey (<a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2012ApJ...744...41B/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BELLS</a>) uncovered about 1,500 strong lenses over two decades. 



Those programs proved the method but lacked volume: only a handful of systems were pristine enough to reveal a lone subhalo.



“Roman will not only significantly increase our sample size, its sharp, high‑resolution images will also allow us to discover gravitational lenses that appear smaller on the sky,” said <a href="https://physics.wustl.edu/people/tansu-daylan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tansu Daylan</a>, a co‑author of the new study and faculty fellow at <a href="https://washu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Washington University</a>. 



Better statistics mean astronomers can move from anecdotal detections to population studies, comparing the number of subhalos with the predictions of various particle candidates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-teaming-up-with-other-telescopes">Teaming up with other telescopes</h2>



Europe’s <a href="https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Euclid" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Euclid</a> mission, launched in 2023, is already mapping dark matter over a third of the sky at optical wavelengths. 



Roman’s deeper infrared reach will pair with Euclid’s breadth, giving each lens a color baseline that sharpens distance estimates for both source and lens.



Closer to home, the <a href="https://rubinobservatory.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vera C. Rubin Observatory</a> will add nightly optical alerts from the ground, flagging any variable sources like supernovae that pop up inside the arcs. 



Those time‑delay measurements can pin down Hubble’s constant while also checking mass models derived from lensing.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-roman-must-tame">Challenges Roman must tame</h2>



Roman’s huge <a href="https://news.yale.edu/2025/06/12/study-roman-telescope-may-be-transformative-better-defining-dark-matter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">focal plane</a> comes with quirks. Wave‑front errors, detector sensitivity shifts, and varying point‑spread functions can masquerade as, or mask, the faint substructure signal.



Wedig’s group built a new pipeline, <a href="https://github.com/AstroMusers/mejiro" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MEJIRO</a>, to inject realistic telescope noise into synthetic images and test detection algorithms. 



They found that ignoring field‑dependent blurring could sway the inferred mass of the smallest clumps by 5 %, which is small but critical when chasing subtle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dark-matter-does-not-exist-universe-27-billion-years-old-study/">physics</a>. 



Another hurdle is <a href="https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/10133563" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">line‑of‑sight clutter</a>: unrelated galaxies between lens and Earth also bend light. 



Accounting for those extra tugs requires combining Roman infrared data with ground‑based redshift surveys to map intervening structures.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-dark-matter-clues-will-show">What dark matter clues will show</h2>



If Roman counts as many low‑mass clumps as cold‑dark‑matter theory expects, the prevailing model gains a decisive win. 



Should the census come up short, physicists might favor warmer particles or even entirely new forces acting in the dark sector.



Either way, every curved smudge that Roman records is a new piece of evidence. “We won’t see dark matter in the images - it’s invisible - but we can measure its effects,” Wedig noted.

NASA's Roman telescope hopes to solve the dark matter mystery

Many people worry about their online privacy and try to protect it by deleting cookies - but new research reveals this method is no longer effective.



A study led by <a href="https://www.tamu.edu/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas A&amp;M University</a> exposes how modern websites quietly track users with a technique called browser fingerprinting.



Unlike cookies, fingerprinting doesn’t leave traces you can erase. It works silently, building a detailed profile based on how your <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-pressure-is-straining-teen-friendships/">browser</a> behaves and what kind of device you use. 



Most users don’t even know this type of surveillance exists. Even more troubling, some companies may be doing it without consent - ignoring privacy laws completely.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-websites-track-you-even-after-deleting-cookies">Websites track you even after deleting cookies</h2>



Every time you open a website, your browser leaks <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gen-ai-and-social-media-divert-peoples-attention-from-climate-crisis/">information</a>. It shares your time zone, screen size, operating system, and device type. These details might seem harmless. But combined, they create a unique fingerprint that identifies you, even if you don’t log in or accept cookies.



Dr. Nitesh Saxena is a cybersecurity researcher, professor of computer science and engineering, and associate director of the Global Cyber Research Institute at Texas A&amp;M.



“Fingerprinting has always been a concern in the privacy community, but until now, we had no hard proof that it was actually being used to track users,” said Dr. Saxena. “Our work helps close that gap.”



This fingerprint acts like a digital signature. It silently follows you from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-is-helping-save-wild-animals-like-caracals/">site</a> to site. And unlike cookies, which you can remove or block, fingerprints are almost impossible to avoid. Even privacy-focused browsers like Tor or Brave struggle to fully mask them.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-devices-leave-behind-a-digital-trail">Devices leave behind a digital trail</h2>



Most people assume that browsing in incognito mode or using privacy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/social-media-use-increases-smoking-vaping-risks-among-youth/">tools</a> keeps them safe. But the Texas A&amp;M study shows that assumption is flawed. You might feel hidden, but your device keeps leaving tracks behind.



“Think of it as a digital signature you didn’t know you were leaving behind,” explained co-author Zengrui Liu, a former doctoral student in Saxena’s lab. “You may look anonymous, but your device or browser gives you away.”



That silent trail means advertisers and websites can continue identifying you. And because you never directly share your name or login information, you’re unlikely to know it’s happening.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-connecting-fingerprints-to-advertising">Connecting fingerprints to advertising</h2>



What makes this research different from past work is its real-world approach. It doesn’t just look at whether fingerprinting exists. It examines how fingerprinting connects to digital advertising and user tracking.



Study co-author Dr. Yinzhi Cao is an associate professor of computer science and technical director of the Information Security Institute at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins University</a>.



“While prior works have studied browser fingerprinting and its usage on different websites, ours is the first to correlate browser fingerprints and ad behaviors, essentially establishing the relationship between web tracking and fingerprinting,” said Dr. Cao.



To test this, the researchers developed a measurement system called FPTrace. It assesses whether advertising systems respond to changes in a browser’s fingerprint. By altering the fingerprint and observing how ads behave, the researchers uncovered the role fingerprinting plays in digital surveillance.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-website-tracking-to-target-users">Website tracking to target users</h2>



With FPTrace, the research team went beyond surface-level code. They analyzed how ad systems changed their behavior in response to fingerprint alterations. The idea was simple: if fingerprinting truly influences ad tracking, changing the fingerprint should affect how advertisers bid for space.



“This kind of analysis lets us go beyond the surface,” said co-author Jimmy Dani, Saxena’s doctoral student. “We were able to detect not just the presence of fingerprinting, but whether it was being used to identify and target users - which is much harder to prove.”



The team found that changing the fingerprint reduced syncing events and affected the value advertisers were willing to pay. This meant advertisers were using fingerprint data in real time to determine how valuable a user was.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-stealthy-system-of-website-tracking">A stealthy system of website tracking</h2>



One of the study’s most surprising findings was how fingerprinting worked even after users deleted cookies. This is important because it shows fingerprinting does not rely on traditional tracking tools. It survives across sessions and devices.



The team noted shifts in HTTP records and bidding behavior when fingerprints changed, meaning users were being re-identified without their consent. This suggests a new method of tracking that’s stealthier and more durable than anything cookies could offer.



Even more, fingerprint-based data may be passed along during backend ad bidding. This process happens in milliseconds and can share your browser fingerprint with third parties without your knowledge.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-limits-of-privacy-laws">The limits of privacy laws</h2>



One of the most alarming aspects of the research is how fingerprinting bypasses privacy laws. Even when users opt out under strict laws like Europe’s GDPR or California’s CCPA, fingerprinting continues silently.



The law requires companies to respect a user’s decision not to be tracked. But fingerprinting falls into a gray zone. It happens in the background, with no visible alert or consent prompt. That makes enforcement difficult and user awareness nearly impossible.



This kind of invisible tracking undermines the very laws created to protect consumers. The researchers warn that current regulations need to expand to address fingerprinting directly.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-for-stronger-privacy-protections">Time for stronger privacy protections</h2>



The study doesn’t just expose a problem. It also points toward solutions. The team believes browsers need to take a stronger stance against fingerprinting. Current anti-tracking tools don’t go far enough.



The experts also hope FPTrace can help regulators audit companies and websites that use fingerprinting without permission. With the right tools, oversight agencies could start identifying violations more clearly and taking action.



Based on their results, the researchers call for a deeper look at how fingerprinting is used, especially in the ad tech industry. They argue that privacy protections must evolve to keep up with these new forms of tracking.

Clearing cookies used to feel like enough. But browser fingerprinting proves that companies have developed new ways to follow you, even when you try to disappear.



As companies find creative ways to bypass privacy protections, new tools and updated laws must respond. Until then, the digital fingerprint your browser leaves behind will continue to tell more about you than you ever intended to share.

Packed between the stone cups of the sponges are fragments of <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/342184591_Small_shelly_fossils_and_carbon_isotopes_from_the_early_Cambrian_Stages_3-4_Mural_Formation_of_western_Laurentia" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">small shelly fauna</a>, the quirky menagerie of early mineralized animals that heralded the Cambrian explosion. These fossils, most under a tenth of an inch long, include baby <a href="https://home.wgnhs.wisc.edu/wisconsin-geology/fossils/brachiopods/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">brachiopods</a>, snail‑like mollusks, and bristly <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0016699524000214" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chancelloriids</a>.



Bennett’s team measured fossil assemblages in multiple vertical sections and compared them to the distance from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-reefs-cant-survive-rising-sea-urchin-numbers/">reef</a> walls.



The researchers logged grain size and chemistry of nearby layers to study how sediment influenced fossil preservation. The approach marries classic field mapping with CT scanning that can spot skeletal bits hidden in uncut rock.



That toolbox let the team count tiny creatures that earlier surveys missed, pushing sample sizes into the thousands.

Small shelly fauna crop up worldwide in rocks dating to the first 25 million years after animals evolved skeletons, making them key markers for global correlation. 



Because many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wild-temperature-swings-boost-coral-reef-resilience/">species</a> lived fast and died young, their remains provide fine‑scale time stamps that help synchronize distant stratigraphic sections.



The specimens also capture evolutionary experiments that never made it into the later fossil record, such as slug‑like <a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rstb.1995.0029" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">halkieriids</a> that wore chain‑mail armor of overlapping plates. Linking these animals to specific habitats can explain why some lineages thrived while others fizzled.



Modern coral reefs often harbor dense banks of filter feeders and crustaceans whose larvae settle preferentially on hard walls. If early reefs played a similar ecological role, small shelly species should cluster close to archaeocyathid mounds. 



That prediction has floated in textbooks for decades but rested on scant quantitative data. Bennett’s dataset provided the first rigorous test at meter‑scale resolution.

“With modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-coral-collapse-may-help-save-the-great-barrier-reef/">reefs</a>, biodiversity is expected to decrease as you move away from the reef structure due to reduced shelter and food access,” said Bennett. Yet her counts showed no clear pattern - some distant fossil layers were as species-poor as those near the mounds.



Instead, a few hardy taxa dominate whole <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336585971_Palaeoecology_of_the_archaeocyathan_reefs_from_the_lower_Cambrian_Harkless_Formation_southern_Nevada_western_United_States_and_carbon_isotopic_evidence_for_their_demise" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">layers</a>, suggesting that early oceans sorted communities by environmental filters rather than by proximity to the reef.



That pattern echoes observations from later Cambrian sections in Mongolia and Labrador, where reefs also failed to boost local diversity.



“Potentially, this happened by preferentially removing or keeping certain faunas, rather than the reef serving as a major food source for surrounding organisms,” added Assistant Professor Sarah Jacquet.



The remark points fingers at <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/hydrodynamics" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrodynamics</a> - the way water flow scours or blankets parts of the seafloor. Models show gentle currents around low-relief reefs can form eddies that trap shells or carry them away. Those physics could produce patchy fossil carpets without invoking biological competition.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sediment-dictated-fossil-survival">Sediment dictated fossil survival</h2>



The team noticed that changes in <a href="https://nautiluslive.org/blog/2023/08/18/science-lithology-dating-seafloors-movements-over-time" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lithology</a>, whether the rock was a grainy packstone or a micritic mud-governed which shells survived. Coarse beds preserved robust hyoliths, while fine muds favored delicate sponge spicules.



Taphonomic quirks can therefore mask true ecological signals, a warning for paleontologists who chase diversity curves through deep time. By pairing sedimentology with fossil tallies, Bennett shows how to tease apart the preservational filter.



The study also strengthens a growing view that archaeocyath reefs were short‑lived “experiments” rather than foundational keystones. 



Similar conclusions emerged from carbon‑isotope <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/390526423_Small_shelly_fauna_biodiversity_from_reef-adjacent_facies_of_the_lower_Cambrian_Harkless_formation_Nevada" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> that tracked the rise and crash of reef communities through Cambrian Stage 4.



Those geochemical shifts hint that global changes in seawater chemistry, perhaps tied to oxygen pulses, played a bigger role than local reef architecture. If true, the early oceans were less a patchwork of hotspots and more a landscape ruled by large‑scale physical drivers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-reefs-warn-us-about-today">Ancient reefs warn us about today</h2>



Coral ecologists <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225405507_Rapid_phase-shift_reversal_on_a_Jamaican_coral_reef">note</a> that today’s reefs often act as biodiversity magnets, with fish and invertebrate richness peaking on the reef and falling away into open sand. But those gradients may depend on the vertical relief and nutrient flow that Cambrian reefs lacked.



Understanding that difference matters because climate change is flattening many living reefs, slicing away the very architecture that supports complex food webs. 



Ancient analogues show that low-relief carbonate banks can persist without the riot of life we associate with reefs. This hints at future ocean floors that remain structurally intact but are ecologically simplified.



“Just because we know how the world works today doesn’t mean it worked the same way back then,” noted Professor Jacquet. Recognizing that flex in nature’s playbook can help scientists design conservation targets that account for multiple evolutionary baselines.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossils-show-reef-loss-risk">Fossils show reef loss risk</h2>



Bennett plans to sample neighboring formations to see whether diversity patterns change in deeper water or in reefs built by different <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-sponges-play-a-critical-role-in-the-ocean-and-they-are-rapidly-vanishing/">sponge</a> species. 



Coupling those data with fluid‑dynamic models could finally pin down how current speed and direction sculpted early animal neighborhoods.



The Nevada hills still hold miles of limestone from ancient animal reefs, awaiting fresh eyes and new technology. Every chip of shale reminds us that even the smallest fossils can rewrite big chapters in Earth history.

New research reveals how the brain assigns emotional value to smells - and why it matters for health and happiness.



If you've ever recoiled from the smell of microwaved fish or smiled at the scent of fresh bread, you’ve experienced just how powerfully odors can stir emotions. But what makes our brains decide that a smell is pleasant - or downright awful?



A new study from researchers at the <a href="https://ufhealth.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Florida Health</a> reveals the neural pathways that give odors their emotional charge.



The findings provide the first detailed insight into how the brain categorizes smells as good or bad. This sheds light on why certain odors evoke such visceral reactions - and how that knowledge could eventually improve health outcomes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smell-s-path-to-the-brain">Smell's path to the brain</h2>



Dan Wesson is senior author of the study and a professor of pharmacology and therapeutics. He's also the interim director of the <a href="https://fcs.institute.ufl.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Florida Chemical Senses Institute</a>.



“Odors are powerful at driving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-emotions-build-in-the-brain-and-why-they-linger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emotions</a>," he said. "It’s long been thought that the sense of smell is just as powerful, if not more powerful, at driving an emotional response as a picture, a song, or any other sensory stimulus.” 



The research focused on the amygdala - the brain’s emotional command center - which interacts with all of our senses. It has especially close ties to smell. In fact, the olfactory system has a more direct route to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lizard-brain-shapes-social-abilities-in-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">amygdala</a> than any other sense.



“This is, in part, what we mean when we say your sense of smell is your most emotional sense,” said first author Sarah Sniffen, a graduate research fellow.



“Yes, smells evoke strong, emotional memories, but the brain’s smell centers are more closely connected with emotional centers like the amygdala.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-good-vs-bad-smells">Good vs. bad smells</h2>



To understand how this connection works, researchers studied <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mice-use-scent-to-determine-whos-the-boss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mice</a> - animals whose brains share many neurochemical similarities with humans. Like us, mice can learn to associate smells with positive or negative experiences.



By analyzing the mice’s brain activity, the researchers identified two genetically distinct types of brain cells in the amygdala that play a key role in determining the emotional value of a smell.



Surprisingly, they found that both cell types could be involved in generating either positive or negative responses. It all depended on where those cells were sending signals.



“It can make an odor positive or negative to you,” Wesson said. “And it all depends upon where that cell type projects in your brain and how it engages with structures in your brain.”



In other words, the same type of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-cell-origins-traced-to-creatures-that-lived-800-million-years-ago/">brain cell</a> could contribute to opposite emotional outcomes depending on its connections.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-odors-shape-daily-experience">Odors shape daily experience</h2>



Understanding smell responses may seem niche, but it has big implications - especially for those with heightened sensory sensitivity.



“We’re constantly breathing in and out and that means that we’re constantly receiving olfactory input,” Sniffen said.



“For some people that’s fine, and it doesn’t impact their day-to-day life. They might even think, ‘Oh, odors don’t matter that much.’ But for people who have a heightened response to sensory stimuli, like those with PTSD or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gut-microbes-have-an-unexpected-link-to-anxiety/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anxiety</a> or autism, it’s a really important factor for their day-to-day life.”



Scents associated with trauma, illness, or discomfort can trigger disproportionately strong responses in certain individuals. These reactions can sometimes interfere with routine activities or medical treatment.



Wesson noted how a patient’s negative association with the smell of a clinic - tied to previous transfusions - could cause intense distress.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-scent-based-therapies">Future scent-based therapies</h2>



Understanding the specific brain circuits behind these reactions may open the door to targeted therapies. According to the researchers, it may one day be possible to modulate the activity of these odor-processing pathways with medications.



This could either dampen distressing responses or help restore emotional enjoyment in cases like appetite loss.



“Emotions in part dictate our quality of life, and we’re learning more about how they arise in our brain,” Wesson said. “Understanding more about how our surroundings can impact our feelings can help us become happier, healthier humans.”



By demystifying the deep link between scent and emotion, this research not only advances neuroscience - it also offers a potential path toward better mental and physical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-environment-day-the-critical-role-of-nature-in-human-well-being/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">well-being</a>.

New research reveals how the brain assigns emotional value to...

Plants are far more adventurous underground than scientists once believed. A new study reports that many species extend a second, hidden network of roots more than a meter below the surface.



This discovery could ultimately reshape how researchers model nutrient cycling, water use, and the planet’s carbon budget.



Mingzhen Lu, an assistant professor in <a href="https://as.nyu.edu/departments/environment.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York University’s Department of Environmental Studies</a>, led this multi-institutional project.



“Understanding where plants grow roots is vital, as deeper roots could mean safer and longer-term carbon storage," she said. "Harsher conditions at depth may prevent detritus-feeding microbes from releasing carbon back to the atmosphere."



The findings suggest that plant roots may already be storing climate-warming carbon well below areas tracked by most ecological surveys.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-data-goes-deeper">Data goes deeper</h2>



Traditional root research stops at roughly 30 centimeters, the depth that shovels and corers reach most easily.



Lu and her colleagues pushed past that limit by tapping into the <a href="https://www.neonscience.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Ecological Observatory Network</a> (NEON), which collects samples down to two meters at dozens of U.S. sites.



From Alaskan tundra to Puerto Rican rainforest, the database provided thousands of soil cores reaching 6.5 feet - deep enough to chart root presence in realms seldom studied.



With those records in hand, the team set out to answer three intertwined questions: How does root density shift as soil gets deeper? Which environmental factors govern that distribution? And are subterranean nutrients being tapped as thoroughly as surface nutrients?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-roots-defy-expectations">Roots defy expectations</h2>



The most eye-opening pattern was “bimodality.” Nearly one-fifth of the ecosystems examined showed two separate peaks in root abundance with depth: one in familiar shallow layers and another much farther down, often aligning with deposits of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nitrogen-was-plentiful-for-early-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen</a>, phosphorus, or moisture.



In other words, plants were quietly plumbing secondary resource pockets, countering the long-held assumption that root activity simply dwindles the deeper one goes.



“The current understanding of roots is literally too shallow. Aboveground, we have eagle vision - thanks to satellites and remote sensing. But belowground, we have mole vision,” Lu said.



That “mole vision,” she argues, has left major gaps in Earth system models that guide climate policy and land-management decisions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-or-carbon-release"><a></a>Carbon storage - or carbon release?</h2>



The presence of deep roots raises a crucial follow-up: What happens to the carbon that plants ferry into those depths? Avni Malhotra, a co-author and lead investigator on a <a href="https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.04.07.647629v1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">companion paper</a>, notes that outcomes could diverge.



“Deep plant roots may cause increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/organic-farming-practices-boost-soil-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil carbon storage</a> in one condition or lead to losses in other conditions due to a stimulation of soil microbes,” she said.



Cool, compacted subsoil tends to slow microbial digestion, potentially locking carbon away for centuries.



Yet in some settings, added root exudates might energize buried microbes, accelerating decomposition. Deciding which scenario dominates will require the kind of stratified sampling that NEON has only begun to provide.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-roots-defy-models">Deep roots defy models</h2>



Global climate models often assume that most biologically relevant actions - plant root growth, microbial decay, nutrient turnover - occur in the topsoil.



Lu’s study indicates that a significant share of plant activity, including carbon allocation, happens far below that zone.



If roots can chase nutrients downward during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/droughts-and-extreme-weather-events-are-escalating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a> or warming events, they may confer more resilience than current simulations capture. Conversely, land-use changes that compact or strip deep horizons could hamper an unseen but vital layer of carbon storage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-putting-root-data-to-work">Putting root data to work</h2>



These subterranean discoveries matter for forestry, agriculture, and conservation. Crop breeders might select varieties with deeper, bimodal rooting patterns to better capture water in arid regions.



Restoration ecologists could prioritize species that drive carbon into stable subsoil pools. 



Policymakers aiming to offset emissions through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reforestation-cannot-offset-carbon-emissions-from-harvesting-wood/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reforestation</a> or soil-carbon credits will need estimates grounded in full-profile measurements rather than the customary shallow cores.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plant-roots-store-climate-secrets">Plant roots store climate secrets</h2>



“Scientists and policymakers need to look deeper beneath the Earth’s surface as these overlooked deep soil layers may hold critical keys for understanding and managing ecosystems in a rapidly changing climate,” Lu said. The team envisions denser networks of deep cores, advanced imaging, and sensor arrays able to watch roots grow in real time.



While many unknowns remain - How universal is bimodality? Which soil chemistries foster it? How stable is deep-buried carbon? - the message is cautiously optimistic.



“The good news is plants may already be naturally mitigating climate change more actively than we’ve realized - we just need to dig deeper to fully understand their potential,” Lu concluded.



By illuminating a hidden architecture beneath our feet, the study invites scientists and citizens alike to rethink what lies between the surface and bedrock - and to recognize that the battle against rising CO2 might have powerful, unseen allies in the dark below.

Plant roots could be key to fighting climate change

Plants are far more adventurous underground than scientists once believed....

Vultures cruising high above a savanna or hyenas crunching bones in the night are more than cinematic symbols of death - they are the planet’s front-line sanitation crew. By devouring carcasses quickly and completely, large scavengers deny dangerous microbes a foothold.



A wide-ranging study from <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a> shows that these underappreciated scavengers are declining at an alarming pace.



The work draws on population assessments for more than 1,300 vertebrate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scavengers-clean-up-wetlands-and-boost-their-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scavenger</a> species and reveals a worrisome pattern.



The steepest rates of scavenger decline were found among the biggest, most specialized carrion eaters, while adaptable opportunists such as rats and feral dogs surge in their absence.



“The evidence we found is very clear,” said senior author Rodolfo Dirzo, a professor of biology and environmental science at Stanford. "Scavengers are in decline, but it’s not homogeneous. It is particularly the large and specialized ones.”



“At the same time, this allows space for the smaller scavengers, which are problematic because they are themselves sources of zoonotic diseases.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-cleaners-to-contaminators">From cleaners to contaminators</h2>



The researchers cataloged everything from famous scavengers - Old World <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/vanishing-vultures-may-threaten-public-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vultures</a>, spotted hyenas, condors - to less obvious diners such as pond turtles, catfish, even great white sharks.



Cross-referencing each species against the <a href="https://www.iucnredlist.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List</a> and regional studies, they found that 36 percent of the world’s scavenger populations are threatened or already shrinking.



When those dominant consumers disappear, their ecological niche is rapidly filled by smaller generalists in a process ecologists label “ecological release.” In temperate suburbs, that might mean raccoons and crows; in tropical villages, perhaps <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rats-are-spreading-a-deadly-disease-across-cities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rats</a> and village dogs.



These newcomers rarely match the efficiency of an eagle or a vulture, leaving more rotting flesh on the landscape. Worse, many thrive near humans, turning carcasses into pathways for diseases to jump from wildlife to people.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-scavenger-decline-in-india">Effects of scavenger decline in India</h2>



Few episodes capture the stakes so vividly as India’s vulture crisis in the 1990s. Veterinary use of the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac proved fatal to vultures that scavenged treated cattle. Populations plummeted, opening a niche for free-roaming dogs.



With vultures gone, feral dog populations surged, leading to an estimated 39 million extra dog bites and 48,000 human deaths from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rabies-is-spreading-among-marine-animals-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rabies</a> between 1992 and 2006.



Once India banned diclofenac in 2006, vulture numbers began to inch upward. This reminded scientists and policymakers that timely intervention can halt or even reverse a downward spiral.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scavengers-quietly-protect-health">Scavengers quietly protect health</h2>



The study emphasizes that these issues are not confined to the Global South. In the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem of the United States, eagles and ravens consume elk carcasses and even aborted fetuses.



By removing potential bacterial incubators within hours, scavengers help curb brucellosis, a livestock disease that can spill over to ranchers. A drop in scavengers there could raise veterinary costs and public-health risks despite the region’s strong infrastructure.



Lead author Chinmay Sonawane, a doctoral student in Dirzo’s lab, underscored humanity’s reliance on species most of us rarely notice: “We’re starting to understand exactly how we depend on each individual species.”



“As we become more aware of these connections, we're going to be more inclined to protect these species, because we are ultimately protecting our health.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-driving-scavenger-decline">Factors driving scavenger decline</h2>



Three forces repeatedly surfaced in the team’s analysis. Expanding agriculture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urbanization-is-a-threat-to-78-of-the-worlds-bird-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urbanization</a> fragment habitats, making it harder for wide-ranging birds and mammals to find carcasses or safe nesting sites.



Intensive livestock production brings direct conflict when ranchers poison or shoot scavengers they suspect of killing calves. At the same time, wildlife trade and trophy hunting remove lions, eagles, and other predators that double as high-capacity scavengers.



These pressures often overlap. Clearing forest for pasture, for instance, strips vultures of roosting trees while putting them nearer cattle treated with toxic veterinary drugs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecosystem-function-and-human-well-being">Ecosystem function and human well-being </h2>



Public suspicion of scavengers compounds their plight. “There is this prejudice that these scavengers are nasty animals and that we should get rid of them, but they are important for the functioning of ecosystems, also for human well-being,” Dirzo said.



The authors call for multi-layered solutions. Conservationists must protect nesting cliffs and den sites and enforce tighter regulation of pharmaceuticals known to poison birds.



Outreach programs can dispel myths, showing local communities how vultures actually protect livestock by removing disease hotspots. Financial incentives or livestock-guarding measures could reduce retaliatory killings of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spotted-hyena-returns-to-egypt-after-5000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hyenas</a> and jackals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scavengers-are-public-health-allies">Scavengers are public health allies</h2>



Rather than tracking a handful of charismatic species, the Stanford team focused on a functional group - animals bound by what they do rather than by taxonomic labels.



That lens, they argue, reveals how losing one slice of biodiversity can disrupt entire healthcare networks in nature. If carcasses linger, fly populations balloon, dog packs expand, and viruses gain new hosts.



Scavengers may lack the appeal of pandas or coral reefs, yet their economic and public-health value is immense. The world’s oldest waste-management system runs on wings, paws, and powerful stomach acids.



Letting it collapse means footing a growing medical bill - one paid in outbreaks, veterinary losses, and human lives. Protecting vultures in India reduced rabies deaths; hyenas curb anthrax in Africa; condors help keep Americas’ pastures cleaner.



Ultimately, the study offers a simple equation: conserve the big eaters of the dead, and you safeguard the living. Ignore them, and the costs arrive on hospital ledgers and in destabilized ecosystems. The choice is clear - and action is urgently needed to halt scavenger decline.

Cannabis is everywhere now. It’s in pharmacies, parties, pain clinics, and political speeches. Many use it to sleep better, relax, or deal with pain. Some cannabis users even see it as a natural alternative to pills.



However, while the world embraced cannabis, heart doctors started noticing something else. A new study published in the journal Heart, based on data from over 432 million people, has revealed a clear <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-extract-cbd-proven-highly-effective-at-killing-mosquitoes/">connection</a>. 



People who use cannabis have a much higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, and even dying from heart disease. That’s not fear-mongering - it’s data from .



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-people-are-using-stronger-cannabis">More people are using stronger cannabis </h2>



In over half of the states in the U.S., and in some countries in Europe, like France, doctors can give cannabis to patients as medicine, but using it just for fun is still illegal. 



Even though it's not allowed for fun, many young people in France still use it a lot. Germany recently changed its laws and now lets people use cannabis recreationally, starting in April 2024.



Now more people use cannabis, and the products they’re using are stronger than before. Today’s cannabis has more <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-reveal-the-most-complete-cannabis-genome-yet/">THC</a>. That means stronger effects on the brain and body - especially the heart.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cannabis-linked-to-heart-problems">Cannabis linked to heart problems</h2>



The researchers looked at 3,012 studies. Among them, 24 studies were focused on the link between cannabis and major heart problems.



An analysis of the research showed that people who use <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cbd-reduces-the-unwanted-side-effects-of-thc/">cannabis</a> have a 29 percent higher risk of heart attack, a 20 percent higher risk of stroke, and more than double the risk of dying from heart disease.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regular-use-raises-stroke-risk">Regular use raises stroke risk</h2>



Stroke risk didn’t look the same in every study. A few didn’t find strong links, especially in people who used cannabis once or twice. But when the researchers zoomed in on heavy users or younger adults, the risk became clearer.



In Australia, one study found that people who used <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-use-in-any-form-directly-linked-to-significant-risk-of-heart-damage/">cannabis</a> weekly were nearly five times more likely to suffer a stroke or mini-stroke. A U.S. hospital database also found increased risk, especially in people aged 25 to 34.



These results suggest that occasional cannabis use may not be a red flag. But regular use, especially while young, is when things start looking risky.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cannabis-linked-to-more-heart-attacks">Cannabis linked to more heart attacks</h2>



One study showed that cannabis users aged 15 to 22 were 36 percent more likely to have a heart attack. Another found that people using cannabis <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-use-directly-linked-to-head-and-neck-cancer/">more than once a week</a> had more than double the odds.



That’s after adjusting for tobacco, cocaine, and other drugs. Cannabis came out as the strongest predictor in a French hospital study - even stronger than <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-cocaine-tricks-and-hijacks-the-brain/">cocaine</a>.



That’s not the story we usually hear about cannabis. But these numbers speak louder than opinions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-higher-death-risk-from-heart-disease">Higher death risk from heart disease</h2>



The risk of fatal cardiovascular events was also investigated. In one study, young patients who had heart attacks and also used cannabis were far more likely to die. The link remained consistent even after controlling for smoking and other conditions.



Another study conducted in the United States confirmed that cannabis users had a much higher chance of dying from heart-related causes. 



In the UK, a 2024 study revealed an unexpected twist. Women, not men, faced higher risks of heart-related death from heavy cannabis use.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-about-the-benefits-of-cannabis">What about the benefits of cannabis?</h2>



Cannabis has shown several proven medical benefits, especially when used under a doctor’s guidance. One of its most recognized uses is for managing chronic pain. 



People with conditions like arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or nerve-related injuries often find relief through cannabis-based treatments. 



The plant's compounds - mainly THC and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-extract-cbd-proven-highly-effective-at-killing-mosquitoes/">CBD</a> - can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to reduce pain signals and inflammation. 



Medical cannabis also <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cannabis-may-ease-cancer-symptoms-like-pain-and-nausea/">helps cancer patients</a> by easing nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, and in some cases, it can stimulate appetite for those struggling with weight loss due to illness.



Doctors have also used cannabis to help patients with neurological disorders. In certain forms of epilepsy, especially in children, CBD-based medications have reduced the number and severity of seizures.



These examples reflect how cannabis, when used appropriately, can provide real and sometimes life-changing benefits for patients, making it easier for some to ignore the overall health implications attached to cannabis use.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-experts-urge-tobacco-style-warnings">Experts urge tobacco-style warnings</h2>



“Cannabis needs to be incorporated into the framework for prevention of clinical cardiovascular disease. So too must cardiovascular disease prevention be incorporated into the regulation of cannabis markets,” noted Professor Stanton Glantz and Dr. Lynn Silver.



The experts emphasized that today's cannabis is not what it used to be. It now includes potent concentrates, synthetic versions, and a growing variety of edible and inhalable forms. These may carry risks beyond the cannabinoids themselves.



“How these changes affect cardiovascular risk requires clarification, as does the proportion of risk attributable to cannabinoids themselves versus particulate matter, terpenes or other components of the exposure,” the authors noted.



“Specifically, cannabis should be treated like tobacco: not criminalized, but discouraged, with protection of bystanders from secondhand exposure.”



Doctors should ask about cannabis use, particularly when it comes to patients with heart problems. For people using cannabis regularly, it’s time to rethink the idea that it is harmless.

Cannabis is worse for heart health than cocaine, according to a startling new study

The Amazon Basin is no longer following its familiar seasonal rhythm. A new study shows that over the past four decades, the region’s wet months have grown markedly wetter, while its dry months are turning even drier.



The discovery comes from an unlikely archive: the annual growth <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-tree-rings-help-predict-extreme-solar-storms/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rings</a> of rainforest trees. Their chemistry records the isotopic “fingerprint” of rainwater year by year.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rings-that-remember-rain"><a></a>Rings that remember rain</h2>



Every downpour carries a distinct ratio of oxygen isotopes. Heavy rains flush lighter isotopes out of clouds first, enriching the water in heavier variants.



When a tree absorbs that moisture, the isotope mix becomes locked into its wood. By extracting pencils of core wood from trunks and reading those ratios, scientists can reconstruct past rainfall with month-by-month resolution.



For the new analysis, researchers sampled Cedrela odorata, a mahogany relative that grows on well-drained terra-firme soils, and Macrolobium acaciifolium, a species rooted in seasonally flooded forests.



Those complementary habitats allowed the team to profile both wet- and dry-season water inputs. Their isotope record spans 1980 to 2010.



The verdict is striking: wet-season rainfall in the Amazon has climbed between 15 and 22 percent, while dry-season rainfall has dropped by roughly 6 to 14 percent. The shift is large enough to affect river levels, forest physiology, and regional weather far beyond the Amazon.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-oceans-influence-on-rainfall-patterns">Oceans’ influence on rainfall patterns</h2>



What is driving the divergence? The scientists point to changing sea-surface <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-are-rising-faster-than-expected-and-likely-to-accelerate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperatures</a> in both the tropical Atlantic and Pacific. 



Warm anomalies in these oceans alter wind belts, convection, and therefore the intensity of rain systems that sweep across South America.



Some of that variability is natural, cycling over decades. But the authors warn that greenhouse warming is very likely amplifying the pattern.



“Our research demonstrates that the Amazon's hydrological cycle is becoming more extreme," said co-authors Roel Brienen and Emanuel Gloor from the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>.



"Increased wet season <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> can lead to more frequent and severe flooding, while reduced dry season rainfall exacerbates drought conditions, impacting forest health and biodiversity.” 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seeing-deeper-than-standard-datasets"><a></a>Seeing deeper than standard datasets</h2>



Standard rainfall gauges and satellite products often underplay long-term trends because they cover limited areas or short periods. Isotope ratios aggregate the signal over large catchments, providing what the authors call a “basin-integrated” view.



“While traditional climate datasets may underestimate these changes, the tree ring isotope data offer a more integrated, large-scale perspective,” explained co-author Arnoud Boom of the <a href="https://le.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leicester</a>.



By combining upland and floodplain samples, the team isolated changes unique to wet and dry months. That dual approach revealed a previously unrecognized “bimodality” in Amazon rainfall trends.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-s-pulse-grows-more-erratic">Amazon’s pulse grows more erratic</h2>



Seasonal extremes bring real-world consequences. In wetter months, swollen rivers inundate low-lying towns, destroy crops, and erode banks. In drier months, the receding waters limit transport, concentrate pollutants, and leave isolated villages without reliable fish stocks.



The study's co-author is Jochen Schöngart of Brazil’s <a href="https://www.gov.br/inpa/pt-br" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Institute for Amazon Research</a> (INPA).



“These findings highlight that the Amazon is not simply drying or wetting overall but experiencing more extreme seasonal swings,” he said. 



“This is of relevant concern as the intensification of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hydrological cycle</a> impacts the functioning of ecosystems, water, and food security of millions of traditional and indigenous people.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-amazon-endangers-climate-future">Changing Amazon endangers climate future</h2>



The ramifications go far beyond local hardship. The Amazon acts as a giant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-carbon-sinks-are-being-pushed-to-their-limits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sink</a>. Longer and hotter dry seasons stress trees, raising mortality and potentially tipping the forest from absorbing CO2 to emitting it. 



More intense wet seasons, on the other hand, can destabilize soils and release <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-extremes-will-boost-methane-emissions-in-the-amazon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">methane</a> from flooded areas.



“The Amazon is a key component of the Earth's climate system," said lead author Bruno Cintra, a scientist at the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Birmingham</a>. "Understanding how its hydrological cycle is changing is essential for predicting future climate scenarios and developing effective conservation strategies.”



He points to the 2025 UN climate summit in Belém - COP30 - as “a critical opportunity for world leaders to take decisive action.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tree-rings-reveal-rainfall-trends">Tree rings reveal rainfall trends</h2>



The researchers relied on the <a href="https://www.neonscience.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Ecological Observatory Network</a>’s deep-coring archive to calibrate tree-ring isotopes against rain gauges, reanalysis grids, and atmospheric models.



Sensitivity tests confirmed that temperature or evaporation could not alone explain the isotope trends; rainfall changes in the Amazon were the dominant driver.



Although the record ends in 2010, satellite data suggest the divergence has persisted - and may have accelerated - in recent years. That makes the study a baseline for assessing how future warming, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-deforestation-crisis-how-can-we-stop-massive-forest-losses/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deforestation</a>, and fires will interact with ocean-driven variability.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-stability-demands-urgent-action">Amazon stability demands urgent action</h2>



Policy implications are clear: conserving intact forest buffers against drought by maintaining local moisture recycling, while curbing global emissions limits further ocean-atmosphere shifts.



The experts argue that accurate Amazon rainfall projections will require integrating deep tree-ring records with modern sensor networks.



“Urgent actions to mitigate climate change and simultaneously adapt the livelihood and traditional management of the populations are required,” Schöngart said.



The rings have spoken; the challenge now is to translate their warning into meaningful protection for the world’s largest rainforest - and the climate system it helps stabilize.

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Lake Trasimeno, which is located west of Perugia in central Italy. It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes a new self-powered nanosensor that can instantly detect mercury contamination with the tap of a finger.&nbsp;



The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
