Imagine Earth has a giant set of underground “storage lockers” where we can tuck away carbon dioxide (CO₂) for centuries so it doesn’t heat the planet. Scientists call this geologic carbon storage. 



It sounds simple: capture CO₂ from factories, power plants, or even the air, pipe it deep underground into the tiny spaces inside certain rocks, and lock it there.



For years, underground storage of carbon dioxide looked and felt like a clever climate trick. Capture the gas, lock it in rock layers, and keep burning fossil fuels while claiming progress. 



The idea seemed safe because early estimates suggested nearly limitless space.



That illusion has collapsed. New research shows the planet’s usable underground storage capacity is far smaller than imagined. Instead of centuries of security, this cushion could run out within 200 years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-drops-sharply">Carbon storage drops sharply</h2>



Industry once placed global capacity at around 14,000 gigatons. A closer look, however, strips away risky regions - earthquake zones, fragile <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/construction-materials-could-store-carbon-in-homes-and-buildings-helping-the-climate/">ecosystems</a>, and crowded cities. What remains is only about 1,460 gigatonnes.



This tenfold drop changes everything. What once seemed endless is now a resource with strict boundaries, one that must be managed carefully. Every choice about how it is used carries long-term consequences. 



If reserved for short-term fixes, the world risks burning through it quickly. If protected for carbon removal, it could become a critical lifeline for stabilizing temperatures far into the future.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risks-hidden-beneath-the-surface">Risks hidden beneath the surface</h2>



Underground storage carries hazards. Injecting carbon can stir up seismic activity, reactivate faults, or open escape paths. Leaks into aquifers could acidify water and release toxic metals. 



Offshore storage avoids some human risks but adds cost and geopolitical disputes. Public pushback also limits expansion, with some governments blocking projects altogether.



Opposition often stems from fears of leaks, distrust of industry promises, and concerns that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">storage</a> will be used to justify continued fossil fuel use. 



These challenges mean underground storage cannot expand smoothly or universally; every project faces technical, political, and social barriers that slow progress and shrink real-world potential.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-s-uncertain-future">Carbon storage’s uncertain future</h2>



Climate plans already assume storage will be vital to reach net zero. But if it mainly serves fossil fuel plants, reserves could vanish by 2200 - and every decade of delay accelerates that timeline. 



Deep emission cuts now ease future pressure, while procrastination forces heavier reliance on shrinking storage space. 



One promising strategy is to prioritize underground capacity for carbon removal rather than fossil fuel capture.



Direct air capture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/abandoned-farmland-can-be-used-for-climate-change-mitigation/">bioenergy</a> with carbon storage could actively draw carbon out of the atmosphere, offering a cooling effect. 



If the full capacity were dedicated to this role, global temperatures could fall by as much as 0.7 °C (1.3 °F), though in practice the impact may be closer to 0.4 °C (0.7 °F) because the climate system doesn’t respond perfectly symmetrically to removal and emission.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reserves-unevenly-spread-worldwide">Reserves unevenly spread worldwide</h2>



Storage is not shared fairly across the globe. The United States, Russia, and Australia hold large, stable reserves. Europe and India lose far more under stricter risk rules.



Meanwhile, some nations in Africa and South America have vast potential but little historic responsibility for emissions. That imbalance raises thorny questions of justice - who gets to use the storage, and on what terms. 



Should wealthy nations pay for access to reserves in countries that contributed less to the crisis? Or should those with the largest reserves prioritize their own development needs first? 



These questions highlight deep inequalities that will shape future climate negotiations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-storage-can-only-buy-time">Storage can only buy time</h2>



Some experts argue the true potential is larger, pointing to decades of safe use in oil and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-natural-hydrogen-deposit-discovery-is-worth-a-staggering-184-billion/">gas reservoirs</a>. 



They note that many depleted fields have held fluids securely for millions of years and could continue to hold injected carbon just as reliably.



Supporters of this view see existing infrastructure and technical expertise as proof that storage can operate at much greater scale than the conservative estimates suggest.



Even so, most researchers caution against treating underground storage as a limitless solution. It was never designed to be the final answer to climate change. 



At best, it should function as a bridge - a temporary measure that buys time while renewables expand, low-carbon industries mature, and societies shift away from fossil fuels.



In that sense, storage is less a cure and more a stabilizer, easing the transition without promising permanence. Its real value lies in supporting broader change, not replacing it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-future-depends-on-choices">Carbon future depends on choices</h2>



The message is clear: underground storage is limited, risky, and unevenly distributed. It can help, but only if used strategically. 



That means prioritizing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/states-taking-action-on-their-own-can-cut-half-of-u-s-emissions/">emission cuts</a>, expanding clean energy, and reserving storage for removing carbon already in the air.



Treating it as infinite would squander one of the few tools that could still reverse warming, leaving future generations with fewer options, higher risks, and a far narrower path to a stable climate.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) might not live up to its reputation as a cleaner energy alternative as many people believe.



A new study discloses that, taking into account factors like processing and shipping, LNG's greenhouse gas emissions are 33 percent more harmful than those of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coal-use-is-not-declining-fast-enough-to-slow-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coal</a>.



This finding questions the long-standing belief that liquefied natural gas is a climate-friendlier option, revealing its significant ecological impact.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-truth-about-liquefied-natural-gas">Hidden truth about liquefied natural gas</h2>



This new evidence emerged in a study recently published in the journal Energy Science &amp; Engineering.



"Natural gas and shale gas are all bad for the climate. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is worse," noted the researchers.



The team was led by Robert Howarth, a professor of ecology and environmental biology at <a href="https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2024/10/liquefied-natural-gas-carbon-footprint-worse-coal" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cornell University</a>. The researchers set out to uncover the true environmental cost of LNG by examining its entire lifecycle, from extraction to transportation.



The findings, published in a paper titled "The Greenhouse Gas Footprint of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Exported from the United States," reveal some striking new insights.



The team discovered that about half of LNG’s total greenhouse gas emissions come from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-methane-emissions-threaten-earths-habitability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">methane</a> and carbon dioxide released during its extraction, processing, transportation, and storage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coal-vs-liquefied-natural-gas">Coal vs. liquefied natural gas</h2>



The research suggests that over a 20-year period, when measured against the global warming potential, LNG's carbon footprint is a third larger than that of coal.



This measurement evaluates the atmospheric impact of various greenhouse gases, and shockingly, even on a 100-year timescale, the carbon footprint of liquefied natural gas either matches or exceeds that of coal.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-liquefied-natural-gas-in-the-u-s">Liquefied natural gas in the U.S.</h2>



As the world’s largest exporter of LNG, the U.S. finds itself in an unsettling position considering its <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/circular-economy-needed-to-reduce-americas-carbon-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon footprint</a>.



The study highlights that the majority of the increase in natural gas production in the U.S. since 2005 stems from shale gas, primarily sourced from Texas and Louisiana.



But, LNG is more than just natural gas. It's cooled to a frigid minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit, enabling easier transport but at an alarming environmental cost.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-emissions-from-natural-gas">Hidden emissions from natural gas</h2>



The experts report that even the seemingly harmless tasks of transporting and storing LNG hide an environmental threat.



Contemporary LNG tankers powered by two- or four-stroke engines might have lower carbon dioxide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-carbon-dioxide-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> than older steam-powered ships, but they inadvertently discharge methane into the atmosphere during the transportation and storage of natural gas.



Given the potency of methane, which is over 80 times more impactful than carbon dioxide, even these minute emissions can severely affect our climate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-the-invisible-enemy">Methane: The invisible enemy</h2>



The research discloses that significant methane emissions arise during the natural gas liquefaction process - nearly 8.8% of the total when evaluated against global warming potential. Depending on the ship, methane emissions from tankers range from 3.9 to 8.1 percent.



"Almost all the methane emissions occur upstream when you're extracting the shale gas and liquefying it," noted the study authors.



"Liquefied natural gas will always have a bigger climate footprint than natural gas, regardless of the assumptions of being a bridge fuel. It still ends up markedly worse than coal."



Given these startling findings, it's essential for us to reconsider the role of natural gas in our energy systems and its environmental repercussions. The choices we make today will have lasting impacts for generations to come.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shifting-our-perspective">Shifting our perspective </h2>



These revelations about LNG should drastically shift our perspective. It has often been considered a "bridge fuel" in the transition to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bamboo-plants-shows-great-potential-to-become-the-next-big-renewable-energy-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">renewable energy</a>, but this recent research forces us to question that notion as the environmental cost seems too high.



As we plan our future, our focus must shift towards truly sustainable energy solutions without concealed climate costs or long-term damage.



The choices we make, from our energy sources to our policies, will shape the future. As we move forward, we should take responsibility and strive for a cleaner, greener planet. Liquefied natural gas might have brought us this far, but it's not the path forward we need.

We all knew that Hurricane Helene was coming. But when the storm raged across the Southeast U.S., claiming over 220 lives and wiping out entire communities, we could not help but feel a jolt of surprise and shock.



Florida's Big Bend, untouched by hurricanes for decades, has now seen three in a year. The western region of North Carolina, once acclaimed as a safe haven from climate change, is currently in the grips of paralyzing floods.



At least 115 people were killed in the state of North Carolina alone, and hundreds are still missing. Many lost their lives after being trapped by floodwaters in their homes and vehicles. 



Some residents were completely disconnected from the rest of the world by mud-covered highways and washed out roads. In some mountain towns like Asheville, supplies had to be delivered by aircraft and even by mule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-disasters-fueled-by-global-warming">Natural disasters fueled by global warming</h2>



Across the nation, natural disasters fueled by global warming have become costlier and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hurricane-helene-aging-infrastructure-in-a-dangerous-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more frequent</a>. They're not just typical weather events anymore, and they're striking where it hurts - in communities where millions of people live.



"Pretty much 50% of the population lives within miles of the sea, more exposed to hurricanes and with an aging infrastructure that is not set for today's climate," said Mari Tye, a scientist and civil engineer at the <a href="https://ncar.ucar.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Center for Atmospheric Research</a> based in Boulder, Colorado.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rising-toll-of-hurricanes">Rising toll of hurricanes</h2>



North Carolina once saw an average of just one or two billion-dollar disasters per year. Now, with a growing population nearing 400,000 since April 2020, this number has jumped to six or seven annual calamities.



What does this mean for the residents? Weeks without water and power, physical isolation, and a daunting recovery ahead.



"Our roads, dams, and electrical grids were designed and built for a world that no longer exists," said Tye, pointing out the struggle to adapt to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hurricanes-cause-thousands-of-deaths-that-are-unaccounted-for/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasingly frequent and disruptive storms</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-calculating-the-damage-of-natural-disasters">Calculating the damage of natural disasters </h2>



The economic impact of weather disasters like hurricanes is increasingly hard to gauge. However, with the nation’s median home price more than doubling since 2000, and car prices also rising, it’s now easier to reach a billion-dollar damage bill.



AccuWeather reports that Hurricane Helene might become one of the costliest storms in U.S. history, with damages reaching up to $250 billion. However, only time will tell the full extent of the losses incurred.



Texas takes the lead as the state most vulnerable to extreme weather, with 186 weather disasters costing $1 billion or more since 1980. Other states don't even come close.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-temperatures-on-the-rise">Global temperatures on the rise</h2>



A key factor behind more destructive weather is our planet's rising temperature. As the Earth continues to warm, extreme heatwaves are becoming more intense, widespread, and longer lasting. This causes increased use of air conditioning, which strains our power grid.



Shifting weather conditions are putting pressure on agriculture, utilities, ecosystems, and people, all of which are battling to adjust to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-warning-strong-solar-storm-headed-to-earth-auroras-expected-sept-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">new extremes</a>.



Daniel Swain, a climatologist at UCLA, views Hurricane Helene as a sobering sign that "the ceiling on how bad things can get essentially has risen."



Jennifer Francis, a senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Massachusetts, noted that major hurricanes are now more likely because of the extra fuel they can extract from warmer oceans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-psychological-toll-of-natural-disasters">Psychological toll of natural disasters</h2>



Beyond the economic and physical devastation wrought by storms like Hurricane Helene, the psychological toll on affected communities is often overlooked.

Such mental health challenges can persist long after the physical rebuilding is completed, influencing community dynamics and individual well-being. 



Social scientists emphasize the importance of robust support systems and mental health resources to help communities recover comprehensively, acknowledging that healing is not merely about repairing structures but also about nurturing resilient spirits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-facing-the-future-of-natural-disasters">Facing the future of natural disasters </h2>



Let's face it: the discussion about an increasingly erratic weather system is one we can no longer ignore. 



Swain said it's important to start having conversations about whether other communities are prepared to face their own versions of Helene.



"We have to be honest about why things unfolded as they did," said Swain. "Part of that conversation is about the role of climate change, which is not insignificant in cases like this."

You might be surprised to learn that marine heatwaves represent one of the most pressing threats to our oceans.



With 2023 etching itself into history as the first year that ocean temperatures exceeded 1°C over pre-industrial levels, we find ourselves facing a significant challenge.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peculiar-nature-of-marine-heatwaves">Peculiar nature of marine heatwaves</h2>



Marine heatwaves, quite simply, are episodes of unusually high sea temperatures that either inhabit local hotspots or stretch across more substantial portions of ocean basins. These heatwaves last at least five days, but some persist for months or even years in extreme cases.



The impacts of marine heatwaves are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-heatwaves-escalate-coral-bleaching-threats/">far-reaching and often devastating</a> for ecosystems, the economy, and coastal communities.



Coral bleaching in the tropics and the subsequent losses to the tourism industry are perhaps the most vivid representation of this. Effects also ripple through to our fisheries and natural capital, both of which undergo significant changes due to the wave.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cooler-waters-of-the-uk">Cooler waters of the UK</h2>



Interestingly, prior to 2023, major marine heat waves had largely bypassed the UK. However, June of that year saw a brief yet intense marine heat wave around UK and Ireland shores.



This event in UK waters revealed a critical gap in our understanding of the characteristics and potential future effects of marine heatwaves.



In an effort to close this gap, researchers set out to characterize both marine heatwaves and their counterparts, known as marine cold spells, around the UK. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-regional-heatwave-trends">Regional heatwave trends</h2>



Despite not standing out as a major hotspot in the wider North Atlantic, UK waters display marked regional diversity, particularly in terms of marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-are-intense-heat-waves-affecting-life-in-antarctica/">heatwaves</a>.



The southern North Sea and the English Channel tend to witness longer and moderately intense heatwaves, while episodes in the eastern North Sea are typically shorter but considerably intense.



Marine heatwaves occur throughout the year. The location, intensity, duration, and occurrence time show substantial variation. This might be why chlorophyll-a, a proxy for phytoplankton abundance, shows an inconsistent response to these events.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emergence-of-greenwaves-and-bluewaves">Emergence of greenwaves and bluewaves</h2>



Within the wider North Atlantic, "greenwaves" (highly productive events) are more prevalent in the southern North Sea and closer to the coast.



On the other hand, marine heatwaves are more likely to coincide with "bluewaves" (low chlorophyll-a extremes) in the tropics and subtropics. Meanwhile, cold spells are usually associated with greenwaves at higher latitudes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-marine-heatwaves">Impacts of marine heatwaves</h2>



The timing and location of marine heatwaves can dramatically affect marine ecosystems. When these events occur in summer, they cause stress for species like seaweed and seagrass.



On the flip side, if they occur in winter or spring, the warm temperatures may trigger phytoplankton blooms, which could either enhance productivity or result in harmful algal blooms.



Given these complexities, targeted research is critical to understand the future impact of marine heatwaves on marine ecosystems and society. 



There is an urgent need to identify at-risk regions so that the resilience of species and coastal communities can be assessed and properly managed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-heatwaves-in-the-uk">Future heatwaves in the UK</h2>



The June 2023 marine heat wave should serve as a wake-up call. Even though these events do not seem as long-lasting or intense as other heat waves around the world, they are projected to increase.



With the silent crisis growing beneath the surface of the seas, the UK is in a unique position to use this head start and learn from the experiences of other nations. 



As we continue to understand and discover more about our oceans, the role we play in shaping its future becomes&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-was-the-cause-of-earths-largest-mass-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasingly evident</a>.



"It is also worth noting that summer terrestrial heatwaves in the UK have recently caused excess deaths, among other adverse health impacts," wrote the study authors. 



"Given the link between the June 2023 marine heat wave and the coincident terrestrial heatwave, understanding interactions and feedbacks between marine and terrestrial heatwaves is another important research direction."

Marine heatwaves are expanding their reach across the globe

You might be surprised to learn that marine heatwaves represent...

Forty years ago, vegetation in the Antarctic Peninsula was extremely limited due to the harsh climate conditions. The region was dominated by ice, snow, and cold temperatures, which made it inhospitable for most plant life.



A new study reveals that, compared to 40 years ago, vegetation cover across the Antarctic Peninsula has increased more than tenfold. But what's behind this green explosion in one of the world's whitest landscapes?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-greening-of-antarctica">Greening of Antarctica</h2>



The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Exeter, the University of Hertfordshire, and the British Antarctic Survey, utilized satellite data to analyze how climate change has driven "greening" across the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-much-will-antarctica-contribute-to-sea-level-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic</a> Peninsula.



The findings show that the region's vegetation cover grew from less than one square kilometer in 1986 to nearly 12 square kilometers by 2021.



“Antarctica has experienced significant increases in temperature over the past 60 years, with rates of warming highest in the West Antarctic and Antarctic Peninsula (AP) regions and occurring much faster than global average warming,” wrote the researchers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-accelerated-rate-of-greening-in-antarctica">Accelerated rate of greening in Antarctica </h2>



The report uncovers more about this greening trend. It's not just growing - it's accelerating - with a 30% growth spurt in the past five years compared to the original study period. We're talking about an additional 400,000 square meters of greens every year during this period.



The satellite findings echo a previous study. Core samples from moss-covered ecosystems on the peninsula told a similar tale - plant growth rates have skyrocketed in the recent past.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-is-antarctica-greening">How is Antarctica greening?</h2>



How does plant life find a way to thrive in such harsh terrains? "The plants we find on the Antarctic Peninsula - mostly mosses - grow in perhaps the harshest conditions on Earth,” said Dr Thomas Roland from the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a>.



“The landscape is still almost entirely dominated by snow, ice and rock, with only a tiny fraction colonized by plant life. But that tiny fraction has grown dramatically - showing that even this vast and isolated ‘wilderness’ is being affected by anthropogenic climate change.”

Picture this for a moment - a wind that sweeps across southern Africa, picking up tiny particles of dust and hurling them across the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.



This seemingly common act of nature had surprising and unexpected effects in 2019, causing the largest phytoplankton bloom in two decades, and at a time of year when these blooms are rarely seen.

Dust, though often regarded as nothing more than a household nuisance, has hidden virtues. Dust clouds can <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saharan-dust-supports-ocean-life-far-from-the-desert/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">voyage great distances</a>, even crossing oceans. 



A significant example of this is the Sahara Desert's dust which frequently voyages across the Atlantic Ocean to the Americas. 



As these minute particles settle on land or water, they deliver essential nutrients which spur plant growth and enhance ocean productivity - a much-needed buffet for marine phytoplankton.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-dust-deserts-and-oceans-connect">How dust, deserts, and oceans connect</h2>



Despite recognizing the voyages of dust and its potential effects, the intricate relationship between desertification, dust emissions, and ocean fertilisation still remains somewhat of a mystery. 



A research paper recently published in the journal PNAS Nexus, however, marks notable progress in unlocking these complex links.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rare-and-remarkable-bloom">Rare and remarkable bloom</h2>



A team of scientists from ESA's Living Planet Fellowships Poseidon and Pyroplankton traced an exceptional phytoplankton bloom off the eastern coast of southern Africa.

This proliferation, triggered by "dust wet deposition" (or rain), occurred in the nutrient-scarce waters southeast of Madagascar.



The study was led by Dr. John Gittings from the <a href="https://en.uoa.gr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Athens</a>. The research has contributed immensely in shedding light on this extraordinary event.

Dr. Gittings and his team employed an array of satellite data from multiple projects led by ESA, including the Climate Change Initiative Ocean Colour project, the Climate Change Initiative Soil Moisture project, and the Science for Society Biological Pump and Carbon Exchange Processes project.



Further contributing to the research were the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service and the Copernicus Marine Service. 



This rich pool of satellite data enabled the team to accurately trace the expanse of this colossal bloom and identify the dust events that caused it.

Dr. Gittings noted that although this extensive phytoplankton bloom was highly unusual, recent trends of increasing air temperatures, aridity, and dust emissions in southern Africa could signify that such events may become more common in the future.



Together with recent discoveries of ocean fertilization caused by mega-fire induced droughts in Australia, these findings hint at a possible link between climate change, drought, aerosols, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zinc-plays-an-overlooked-role-in-ocean-processes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean blooms</a>.

Dust from Africa sparked a massive phytoplankton bloom

In the United States, hurricanes and tropical storms carry a deadly legacy that extends far beyond the immediate destruction they cause.



Contrary to the official statistics that usually only account for immediate fatalities, new research suggests that these damaging weather phenomena, collectively known as “tropical cyclones,” lead to a surge in deaths that extends over a period of nearly 15 years post-storm.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-uncovering-hidden-hurricane-deaths">Uncovering hidden hurricane deaths</h2>



Traditionally, official fatality statistics linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fast-moving-tropical-cyclones-are-becoming-more-powerful/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tropical cyclones</a> only account for direct deaths, which typically occur through drowning or other traumatic incidents. 



According to official reports, these direct fatalities average 24 persons per storm. However, new research presents a far more disturbing picture of the aftermath of these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-disasters-are-on-the-rise-but-hazard-plans-are-inadequate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">natural disasters</a>.



"In any given month, people are dying earlier than they would have if the storm hadn’t hit their community," said study senior author Solomon Hsiang, a professor of environmental social sciences at the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thousands-of-excess-hurricane-deaths">Thousands of excess hurricane deaths</h2>



Professor Hsiang explained that after a big storm, there are cascading effects where cities are rebuilding, households are displaced, or social networks are broken. "These cascades have serious consequences for public health."



Hsiang and study lead author Rachel Young estimate that the average U.S. tropical cyclone indirectly causes between 7,000 to 11,000 excess deaths.



The researchers further estimate that tropical storms since 1930 have contributed to between 3.6 million and 5.2 million deaths across the United States.



This is a far greater toll than the 10,000 deaths officially attributed to these storms by government statistics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-impact-of-hurricanes">Understanding the impact of hurricanes</h2>



The study estimates are derived from the statistical analysis of data from 501 tropical cyclones that hit the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from 1930 to 2015.



The experts considered mortality rates for various populations before and after each cyclone.



The research reflects an accumulation of ideas from previous studies that have noted the long-term economic impact of tropical cyclones and the underestimation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hurricane-related-deaths-on-the-rise-especially-in-vulnerable-communities/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">storm-related deaths</a> in the immediate aftermath.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-struggle-of-unequal-burdens">The struggle of unequal burdens</h2>



The research serves as the first to hint that hurricanes play a significant role in the distribution of overall mortality risk across the country.



The experts found that more than 3 in 100 deaths nationwide are related to tropical cyclones. However, the burden is disproportionally higher for certain groups.



Black individuals, for example, are found to be three times more likely to die post-hurricane compared to their white counterparts. 



This highlights the unequal experience faced by many Black communities in the aftermath of natural disasters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-future-hazards">Preparing for future hazards</h2>



The long-term surge of cyclone-related deaths tends to be significantly higher in areas that have historically experienced fewer hurricanes. 



"Because this long-run effect on mortality has never been documented before, nobody on the ground knew that they should be adapting for this and nobody in the medical community has planned a response,” said Young.



This highlights the urgent need for better preparedness and more proactive planning across affected communities and the medical field.

We're about to unravel the story of the Arctic Siberian primrose, a hardy plant whose existence is threatened by rapid global warming and its struggle to adapt.

Perched on the frosty edges of the Bothnian Bay and Arctic Ocean, the Siberian primrose has been battling the odds for centuries, ever resilient.&nbsp;



However, climate change is a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sloths-are-struggling-to-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">formidable enemy</a>. How can plants adapt if they're nailed to the ground, unable to shift to more favorable environments, and evolution seems to be moving in slow motion?

The team found out that the survival of the Siberian primrose hinges on one crucial condition - we must slow down climate change fast enough to give the flowers the time they need to evolve.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to generate water? Scientists have been at it for years. But now, it seems, we are really on to something.



For the first time ever, scientists have observed the birth of water right from its atomic constituents - hydrogen and oxygen -- joining hands to form tiny bubbles of water.



This all happened in a <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> lab where a team of scientists was trying to unravel the secret of how a metallic element, palladium, aids the gases in reacting to form water. 



The exciting part? They noticed all this at a nanoscale.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-optimal-conditions-for-water-generation">Optimal conditions for water generation</h2>



What's even more astonishing is that this reaction doesn't require harsh conditions, making it a potentially useful tool to generate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-discovery-water-molecules-will-force-chemistry-textbooks-to-be-rewritten/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> quickly in dry areas, even including other planets.



The study is set to be published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. So, what's all the excitement about?



Study senior author Vinayak Dravid is a professor at Northwestern’s <a href="https://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">McCormick School of Engineering</a> and founding director of NUANCE Center.



"By directly visualizing nanoscale water generation, we were able to identify the optimal conditions for rapid water generation under ambient conditions," explained Dravid.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-applications-of-rapid-water-generation">Applications of rapid water generation </h2>



According to Dravid, the findings have significant implications for practical applications, enabling rapid water generation in deep space environments using gases and metal catalysts, without requiring extreme reaction conditions.



“Think of Matt Damon’s character, Mark Watney, in the movie ‘The Martian.’ He burned rocket fuel to extract hydrogen and then added oxygen from his oxygenator," said Dravid. 



"Our process is analogous, except we bypass the need for fire and other extreme conditions. We simply mixed palladium and gases together.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-secret-of-palladium">Hidden secret of palladium</h2>



In the early 1900s, scientists knew that palladium could help generate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/collecting-water-from-the-air-to-tackle-a-global-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water</a> quickly. However, the exact process remained a mystery, noted study first author Yukun Liu, a PhD candidate in Dravid’s laboratory.



“It’s a known phenomenon, but it was never fully understood,” said&nbsp;Liu. “Because you really need to be able to&nbsp;combine the direct visualization of water generation and the structure analysis&nbsp;at the atomic scale in order to figure out what’s happening with the reaction and how to optimize it.”



And that was impossible until nine months ago when Dravid’s team introduced a method to analyze gas molecules in real time. They essentially created a super-thin glassy membrane with a honeycomb design to hold gas molecules so they could be viewed within high-vacuum transmission electron microscopes.



The result was remarkable. Researchers could now look at samples in atmospheric pressure gas at a resolution of just 0.102 nanometers - a significant leap from the 0.236-nanometer resolution offered by other leading tools.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-the-smallest-bubble">Breakthrough: The smallest bubble!</h2>



Using their new technique, the team observed the reaction on palladium. As hydrogen atoms entered the palladium, expanding its square lattice, they saw <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/planets-are-hiding-much-more-water-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tiny water bubbles</a> forming at the metal's surface.

"We think it might be the smallest bubble ever formed that has been viewed directly. It's not what we were expecting. Luckily, we were recording it, so we could prove to other people that we weren't crazy," said Liu.



"We were skeptical. We needed to investigate it further to prove that it was actually water that formed," another researcher, Kunmo Koo, points out.



The researchers used electron energy loss spectroscopy to analyze these bubbles. By examining the energy loss of scattered electrons, they detected oxygen-bonding characteristics unique to water. 



To confirm that the bubbles were indeed water, they were heated to evaluate the boiling point.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fastest-way-to-generate-water">Fastest way to generate water</h2>



After the experts confirmed that the palladium reaction was generating water, the next challenge was to optimize the process. They tried different combinations of hydrogen and oxygen to determine the quickest rate of water generation.



The team discovered that adding hydrogen first, followed by oxygen, led to the fastest reaction rate. After filling the palladium with hydrogen, they then introduced oxygen gas - resulting in a swift reaction.



"When we stored hydrogen in the palladium first, and then added oxygen, the reaction started. Hydrogen comes out of the palladium to react with the oxygen, and the palladium shrinks and returns to its initial state," explained Liu.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-system-for-space-exploration">Sustainable system for space exploration</h2>



The Northwestern team envisions a future where this process could be put to good use. The idea is to prepare hydrogen-filled palladium before traveling into space and then add oxygen to generate water for drinking or watering plants.



Although the study focused on studying bubble generation at nanoscale, larger sheets of palladium would generate much <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-water-day-a-focus-on-prosperity-and-peace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">larger quantities of water</a>.



"Palladium might seem expensive, but it's recyclable," said Liu. "Our process doesn't consume it. The only thing consumed is gas, and hydrogen is the most abundant gas in the universe. After the reaction, we can reuse the palladium platform over and over."



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2408277121" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

One of the less-observable effects of megafires is the long-lasting damage they impose on orchard trees. According to researchers, these effects can significantly disrupt future yields and agricultural stability.



In a game-changing study conducted at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a>, scientists discovered that the thick smoke produced by megafires can adversely affect the energy reserves of trees and result in a staggering 50% reduction of their nut harvest.



This startling fact places new importance on understanding the role of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/twenty-years-of-air-quality-improvement-erased-by-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> and their smoke in both agricultural and natural ecosystems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-megafire-smoke-and-orchard-trees">Megafire smoke and orchard trees </h2>



The team at UC Davis had initially embarked on an assessment of how trees, specifically almond, pistachio and walnut varieties, handle heat and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drought-kills-trees-faster-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">drought</a> by storing energy in the form of carbohydrates. 



While their research was ongoing between 2018 to 2022, megafires in 2020 swept over 4.2 million acres across California. The fires produced a dense cover of smoke, ash, and particulate matter that lingered for weeks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-effects-of-prolonged-smoke">Effects of prolonged smoke</h2>



This unexpected development presented a unique opportunity to observe how the prolonged and pervasive smoky conditions might influence <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oak-trees-use-carbohydrate-reserves-to-survive-insect-invasions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbohydrate levels in trees</a> and ultimately affect their growth and productivity.



Study lead author Jessica Orozco from the UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences elaborated on the potential impacts of megafire smoke on orchard trees. 



"<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-life-on-earth-photosynthesis-begins-on-the-quantum-level-with-a-single-photon/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Photosynthesis</a> produces carbohydrates, which are critical elements for tree survival," Orozco explained. "Trees need carbohydrates not just to grow but to store energy for when they’re under stress or when photosynthesis isn’t happening."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lingering-impacts-of-megafire-smoke">Lingering impacts of megafire smoke</h2>



The thick smoke altered light conditions, occluding some direct sunlight and casting a shadow over the orchards, while simultaneously creating a diffuse light effect that filtered through the smoke.



This diffusion could potentially aid trees in generating more carbohydrates. However, Orozco explained that the smoke was so dense that its increase probably didn't offset the loss of direct sunlight.



The researchers observed that megafire smoke didn't just diminish the carbohydrate reserves in trees but instigated lasting losses, which pressed on even after the fires had been extinguished. 



Notably, the most <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-wildfires-have-doubled-in-the-last-20-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">severe wildfire</a> activity often aligns with the period when trees begin to store carbohydrates to get through winter dormancy and fuel spring growth. The impact of smoke was far greater than anticipated. 



"We were expecting to see some impact especially in the months when the smoke was really dense, but we weren’t expecting the smoke to have such a lingering effect and result in a significant drop in yield,” said Orozco.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complexity-of-megafire-smoke">Complexity of megafire smoke</h2>



The scientists are not yet sure which components of megafire smoke caused this drastic drop in tree carbohydrate levels, but the complexity of the smoke's composition presents several possibilities.



It's plausible that one or a combination of factors, such as reduced light availability, elevated ozone concentrations, and increased particulate matter levels - all known to interfere with photosynthesis - are to blame for the significant decline in energy storage within the trees.



The findings underline one thing very clearly; the risks posed by wildfires are not just immediate and visible - they have far-reaching and enduring consequences.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-threat-to-agriculture">Growing threat to agriculture</h2>



The impact of megafires extends beyond the immediate damage to crops and soil. As climate change accelerates, scientists warn that the frequency and intensity of megafires will continue to rise, posing a growing threat to agricultural production.



Hotter temperatures and prolonged drought conditions create the perfect environment for these large-scale fires to ignite and spread. 



The increasing prevalence of megafires highlights the urgent need for solutions that can mitigate the long-term impacts of smoke on crops. 



Early-warning systems, innovative farming techniques, and fire-resistant plant varieties could become essential tools in preserving agriculture in fire-prone regions. 



As megafires become more frequent, understanding their effects will be crucial for developing effective adaptation strategies.

PFAS stands for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and they are notoriously known as "forever chemicals" because they last forever. 



But why should we be worried? And what exactly are these PFAS forever chemicals, anyway?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-are-pfas-forever-chemicals">What are PFAS forever chemicals?</h2>



PFAS are a class of human-made <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-can-now-trace-forever-chemicals-back-to-their-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">chemicals</a> used in a vast array of consumer products -- from non-stick pans to firefighting foam -- thanks to their potent oil and water repelling abilities. But this convenience comes at a hefty price.



PFAS have been linked to a host of health problems including infertility, behavioral disorders, and an assortment of cancers.



They're dubbed 'forever chemicals' -- and it's not because they're a symbol of eternal love -- they're designed to resist decomposition, sticking around indefinitely in our bodies and the environment at large.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pfas-forever-chemicals-in-the-amazon">PFAS forever chemicals in the Amazon</h2>



The study spearheaded by Dr. Ivan Kourtchev from <a href="https://www.coventry.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Coventry University</a>'s research center for agroecology, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-filtration-system-removes-forever-chemicals-from-water/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water and resilience</a>, unearthed the presence of PFAS in the atmosphere surrounding the Amazonian trees.



The find was not only surprising but also deeply alarming. According to Dr. Kourtchev, the appearance of these 'forever chemicals' in the air above the seemingly untouched <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nearly-40-of-climate-critical-amazon-rainforest-is-unprotected/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazon rainforest</a> was nothing short of 'shocking'.



"Precisely what you don’t want to hear when talking about one of Earth's most precious and diverse ecosystems, right? But here we are," he commented.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-amazon-under-threat">Amazon under threat</h2>



Dr. Kourtchev and his team are now on a mission to understand the potential risk these chemicals pose to Amazon's flora. 



"The Amazon is a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-rainforest-is-approaching-widespread-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">unique ecosystem</a> teeming with rare, exotic species. Any imbalance caused by these PFAS can spell disaster for biodiversity and species survival," he warned.



With over 30 million people calling the Amazon home, the risk is not limited to the ecosystem alone. These residents could be inhaling PFAS, exposing their bodies to the toxic effects of these chemicals. 



"Our bodies can mistake these chemicals for hormones, leading to infertility. This hormonal mimicry could disrupt the reproduction of unique animals and vegetation in the region as well," Dr. Kourtchev explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-following-the-forever-chemicals-trail">Following the forever chemicals trail</h2>



In an extensive study, the research team collected air samples from the top of the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, standing tall at a whopping 1,066-foot (approximately 325 meters), mirroring the stature of the renowned Eiffel Tower.



The sample analysis, conducted back at Coventry University, was steered by Dr. Kourtchev employing a sensitive technique he previously pioneered.



What the team found was stirring -- PFAS were not locally sourced. They were transported long-range, making their way from afar. 



This puzzle prompted Dr. Kourtchev and his team to examine how these forever chemicals were being trafficked.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-call-for-awareness-and-action">Call for awareness and action</h2>



According to the team's paper, published in Science of The Total Environment, this research marked the first measurement of forever chemicals in the atmosphere of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tree-mortality-is-pushing-the-amazon-to-a-tipping-point/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazon rainforest</a>.



The prevalence of PFAS in various day-to-day products and their ability to contaminate drinking water turn them into a serious health menace.



Remember, PFAS don't just vanish. They linger inside our bodies, leading to severe health issues including fertility problems and developmental complications, especially in pregnant women and their newborns. 



It's high time we raised awareness about their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-microbes-discovered-destroys-pfas-forever-chemicals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">possible environmental implications</a>, pushing for informed choices and safer practices.

The storm's severe flooding revealed just how vulnerable many communities are to these converging factors, calling attention to the urgent need for improved resilience and preparation.



According to Manoochehr Shirzaei, an associate professor of geophysics at <a href="https://www.vt.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Virginia Tech</a>: "The tragic flood event in the southeast U.S. is a poignant example of the confluence of multiple factors, including development in floodplains, inadequate infrastructure maintenance and management, and the specter of climate change, whose compounding effect can amplify the disaster."



The hurricane highlighted the growing necessity for better community readiness in the face of mounting environmental challenges. 



"Both observational data and climate models suggest that the frequency and intensity of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/future-forecast-more-extreme-precipitation-ahead/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme precipitation</a> events have been increasing and are projected to continue rising," said Shirzaei.

"As these structures deteriorate with time, their vulnerability to failure during extreme weather events increases."



The hurricane’s path of destruction also exposed the repercussions of insufficient infrastructure maintenance, which added to the disaster's devastation. 



As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme weather</a> events grow more frequent, addressing the condition of these aging systems becomes critical to reducing future disaster risks.

"Over the past few decades, the expansion of human populations into flood-prone areas has accelerated worldwide," noted Shirzaei.

Hurricane Helene's devastating impact on such regions serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of building in high-risk areas.

Making landfall in Florida, the storm quickly turned northwest, soaking Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia, leaving behind widespread flooding, destruction, and tragic loss of life.



At least 190 people have been confirmed dead following the devastation caused by Helene. 



More than half of the fatalities occurred in North Carolina, where entire communities were swept away by several feet of fast-moving floodwaters. Hundreds remain missing, and authorities are facing challenges in identifying some of the victims.

Scientists have studied this region for its volcanic activities and the role it plays in seafloor spreading, but who could have predicted that remnants of an ancient seafloor lay buried deep below?

Wang explained, "This thickened area is like a fossilized fingerprint of an ancient piece of seafloor that subducted into the Earth approximately 250 million years ago. It's giving us a glimpse into Earth's past that we've never had before."

However, recent research suggests that our ancient seafloor has gotten stuck midway through this subduction journey, raising some interesting questions about how tectonic movement works and its long-term effects on the interactions between the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-mantle-may-contain-a-wealth-of-green-metals/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s crust and mantle</a>.

"We found that in this region, the material was sinking at about half the speed we expected. Our discovery opens up new questions about how the deep Earth influences what we see on the surface across vast distances and timescales," Wang continued.

By gathering more seismic data, they hope to craft a detailed global map of these formations. This could ultimately help scientists better comprehend how tectonics have sculpted our planet and potentially improve early warning systems for earthquakes and volcanic activities.



The implications of this research don't stop at our own doorstep. The techniques and insights gleaned from this study could be applied to other extraterrestrial bodies like Mars and Venus.



"We believe that there are many more ancient structures waiting to be discovered in Earth's deep interior. Each one has the potential to reveal many new insights about our planet's complex past -- and even lead to a better understanding of other planets beyond ours," Wang confidently stated.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Scientists have determined that 2022 was the 5th warmest year since 1880. Furthermore, the last nine consecutive years have been the warmest on record.



From devastating floods and wildfires to natural disasters like Hurricane Ian, 2022 showed us yet again how a warming climate affects people across the globe.&nbsp;



"As we look back at 20:22 and years past, we see that each year we better understand the challenges we face and how important it is to meet them," says NASA.

According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
