Tiny fragments known as microplastics are finding their way into the Gulf of Mexico, a region teeming with marine life and critical to global seafood supplies. 



New research shows just how much these particles are concentrating in waters where sea turtles, red snapper, and dolphins live.



Scientists used computer models to track the movement of microplastics in the northern Gulf of Mexico over a three-year period. The results not only reveal where these pollutants end up but also explain which sources matter most.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-drive-the-plastic-crisis">Rivers drive the plastic crisis</h2>



The study challenges a long-standing assumption about where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-escaping-from-water-treatment-plants/">microplastics</a> come from. Wastewater treatment plants have often been blamed as major culprits. Instead, the modeling shows rivers are the main pathway carrying plastic particles into the Gulf.



“The Gulf of Mexico, especially its northern part near the southern U.S., is increasingly polluted by tiny plastic particles called microplastics,” noted study co-author Annalisa Bracco, CMCC scientist.



“We used computer models to study how these plastics move over short periods (about a month) across three years. We looked at different sizes and types of plastics and found that most pollution comes from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alarming-levels-of-microplastics-found-in-every-major-european-river/">rivers</a> and not from wastewater treatment plants.”



The team found that different plastics behave differently once they enter the water. Heavier ones sink and settle on the seafloor. Lighter particles float and resist the pull of waves, traveling longer distances. 



The research also identified a hotspot of microplastic buildup west of the Mississippi River Delta - an area that happens to be vital for many marine species.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-in-critical-habitats">Microplastics in critical habitats</h2>



The study didn’t stop at mapping plastic movements. It overlaid pollution patterns with detailed data on where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastic-pollution-found-in-every-aquatic-species-tested/">marine animals</a> live. This step created a clear picture of how microplastics overlap with critical habitats.



Bracco calls this the most important outcome of the work. The overlap highlights risks not only for wildlife but also for people. 



“The fact that plastic impacts regions of intense fishery (which means we’re ingesting some) is often the best way to activate a policy response or gain public interest,” she said.



This connection between pollution and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seafood-is-underestimated-source-of-pfas-exposure-in-humans/">seafood</a> matters. The Gulf of Mexico supports major commercial fisheries. If fish and shellfish in these waters carry microplastics, those particles could reach dinner plates around the world.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-roadmap-for-action">A roadmap for action</h2>



The research involved not just seasoned scientists but also an undergraduate student from <a href="https://www.gatech.edu/">Georgia Tech</a> who contributed species distribution data. Their combined efforts go beyond documenting the problem. 



By identifying specific pollution sources, the study offers tools for targeting cleanup and prevention.



“It is important to show how state-of-the-art modeling tools can be used to address coastal problems that interest the general public,” said Bracco. 



“It is somewhat easier to raise awareness of the risks associated with plastic pollution (just one of the many anthropogenic threats) when linking it to fish, turtles, and dolphins instead of simply delivering the likely plastic distribution maps.”



In practical terms, this means policymakers can act on evidence of where microplastics enter the Gulf and where they accumulate. Addressing these hotspots could reduce long-term impacts on both ecosystems and the seafood industry.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-beyond-the-gulf">Looking beyond the Gulf</h2>



The modeling framework created for this project has value far beyond the United States. Other coastal regions face similar pollution problems, and the approach could be adapted worldwide. CMCC’s Global Coastal Ocean division is already positioned to take this next step.



“This project is setting a framework for, hopefully, more similar efforts to come,” Bracco said. 



“In other words, it is important to look for ways to make our research relevant to everyday life (in this case the fish we consume) to help put in motion the change that is needed.”

Exposure to certain pollutants, such as fine particles (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), during pregnancy and childhood has been linked to alterations in the microstructure of the brain's white matter.&nbsp;



Some of these effects persist into adolescence, according to a new study led by the <a href="https://www.isglobal.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Barcelona Institute for Global Health</a> (ISGlobal). 



White matter is an essential brain structure responsible for connecting different brain regions. The findings highlight the urgent need to address <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a> as a public health concern, particularly for pregnant women and children.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollution-and-brain-development">Air pollution and brain development</h2>



There is mounting evidence suggesting that air pollution negatively impacts neurodevelopment in children.&nbsp;



While earlier research using imaging techniques has explored how air pollutants affect white matter, these studies were limited to snapshots at a single timepoint. They also failed to track participants over the course of childhood.



“Following participants throughout childhood and including two neuroimaging assessments for each child would shed new light on whether the effects of air pollution on white matter persist, attenuate, or worsen,” explained study senior author Mònica Guxens. This is precisely what her team set out to investigate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-childhood-exposure-to-various-pollutants-nbsp">Childhood exposure to various pollutants&nbsp;</h2>



The study examined over 4,000 children who had been followed from birth as part of the Generation R Study in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.&nbsp;



The research team estimated the children's exposure to 14 different air pollutants during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pregnancy-may-speed-up-aging-in-women/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pregnancy</a> and childhood based on where their families lived. 



For 1,314 of these children, the researchers were able to analyze data from two brain scans - one at around age 10 and the other at age 14 - to assess changes in the microstructure of white matter.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changes-in-white-matter-development-nbsp">Changes in white matter development&nbsp;</h2>



The analysis revealed that exposure to pollutants like fine particles (PM2.5) and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-nitrogen-oxide-pollution-could-boost-crop-yields/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nitrogen oxides</a> (NOx) was associated with differences in white matter development. 



Specifically, higher exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy, and to PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5-10, and NOx during childhood, correlated with lower levels of fractional anisotropy (FA) - a measure of how water molecules diffuse within the brain.&nbsp;



In more developed brains, water flows more in one direction, leading to higher fractional anisotropy values. The study found that this impact persisted into adolescence, with evidence of long-term effects on brain development.&nbsp;



Each increase in air pollution exposure corresponded to a developmental delay in fractional anisotropy equivalent to over five months.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-are-small-particles-reaching-the-brain">Are small particles reaching the brain?</h2>



“We think that the lower fractional anisotropy is likely the result of changes in myelin, the protective sheath that forms around nerves, rather than changes in the structure or packaging of the nerve fibers,” said lead author Michelle Kusters, a researcher at ISGlobal.&nbsp;



The exact mechanism by which air pollutants affect myelin remains unclear, but it may involve small particles reaching the brain or inflammatory responses triggered by particles entering the lungs.&nbsp;



This process could lead to neuroinflammation, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/exposure-to-green-space-reduces-oxidative-stress-in-children/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oxidative stress</a>, and, ultimately, neuronal death, as seen in animal studies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-additional-impacts-on-white-matter">Additional impacts on white matter</h2>



The experts also discovered that some pollutants influenced another measure of white matter, called mean diffusivity (MD), which typically decreases as the brain matures.&nbsp;



Higher exposure to pollutants like silicon in fine particles (PM2.5) during pregnancy was associated with initially higher mean diffusivity, which then decreased more rapidly as the children aged. This suggests that certain effects of air pollution may lessen over time.



“Even if the size of the effects were small, this can have a meaningful impact on a population scale,” Guxens said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stricter-pollution-guidelines-are-needed">Stricter pollution guidelines are needed</h2>



The researchers also found that these effects occurred at levels of PM2.5 and PM10 above the World Health Organization's recommended limits but below those currently allowed by the European Union.&nbsp;



“Our study provides support to the need for more stringent European guidelines on air pollution, which are expected to be approved soon by the European Parliament,” Guxens added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lasting-changes-in-white-matter">Lasting changes in white matter</h2>



In a previous study, Guxens and her team demonstrated that white matter microstructure could also be affected by early exposure to heat and cold, particularly among children living in lower-income neighborhoods.



“Even though we found an attenuation of the initial association between air pollution and higher MD in early adolescence, residential outdoor air pollution exposure during pregnancy and childhood was also associated with lasting changes in white matter microstructure across adolescence,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Each increase in exposure to air pollution corresponded to more than a 5-month delay in the development of fractional anisotropy, noted the researchers.



The study is published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.envres.2024.119828" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Research</a>.

In our modern world, the sight of forest fires, and their devastating impacts, is becoming all too common, a stark contrast to the past. We're not just talking about an uptick in the number and frequency of these occurrences, but also their intensity and the severity of the burn. 



There's been a significant upward trend, particularly in places like the western United States and the eastern side of Spain, where fire events have come close to doubling or tripling in size in the recent past.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-do-forest-fires-leave-behind">What do forest fires leave behind?</h2>



We know how damaging forest fires can be, their effects aren't just limited to the destroyed vegetation and the loss of habitats. 



Our focus here, however, is on a specific aftermath that has received lesser attention -- the increased exposure of land brought upon by these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/droughts-and-fires-diminish-forests-carbon-storage-ability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fires</a>. But what does this exposure mean for our planet’s climate?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-satellite-data-and-forest-fires">Satellite data and forest fires</h2>



Chao Yue, along with his team of dedicated researchers, decided to tackle this question by analyzing satellite data. 



They took a deep dive into more than a decade worth of data (from 2003 to 2016) involving wildfire events across northern temperate and boreal forests (from 40° N to 70° N). 



What they discovered has implications for how we view the link between forest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-threaten-the-recovery-of-the-ozone-layer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fires</a> and global warming.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unseen-impact-of-forest-fires">Unseen impact of forest fires</h2>



After a year following a fire event, the surface starts to warm up, a finding consistent with previous research. 



However, Yue and his team went a step further and developed a mathematical model to show fire sizes successfully amplified surface warming in North America and eastern boreal Asia. 



This discovery was a game-changer, unearthing an aspect of surface warming that had previously been hiding in plain sight.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reflectivity-and-evapotranspiration">Reflectivity and evapotranspiration</h2>



The team found decreased evapotranspiration and surface reflectivity a year after the fires, with larger fires leading to greater decreases. 



This means, the surface, now devoid of much of its vegetation and exposed to incoming radiation, was <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-season-of-2023-redefined-what-is-possible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">getting warmer</a>, making the planet a tad hotter than before. 



However, this was not the case in certain regions, like western, central, and southeastern Siberia and eastern Europe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deciduous-broadleaf-trees">Deciduous broadleaf trees</h2>



There's a reason why these regions weren't experiencing the same surface warming effects. They predominantly house mixed forests or forests filled with deciduous broadleaf trees. 



These trees, the authors speculate, may be moderating fire vulnerability, and could be pivotal in our future fire mitigation strategies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-solution-a-leafier-future">Potential solution: A leafier future?</h2>



Could planting more broadleaf trees be the answer to combating post-fire surface warming? The concept does offer a potential solution. 



Yet, it's not without its challenges and needs more research to determine just how effective broadleaf trees might be in suppressing surface warming in forests across Eurasia.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dynamics-and-forest-fires">Carbon dynamics and forest fires</h2>



The relationship between forest fires and carbon dynamics presents another intricate layer of their impact on climate. 



As forests burn, they release vast amounts of stored carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, exacerbating greenhouse gas concentrations and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-attribute-extreme-heat-and-wildfires-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contributing to global warming</a>. 



However, the role of regrowth in carbon sequestration following a fire is equally significant.



When forests regenerate, they can reabsorb some of the carbon released during the burning, potentially mitigating these emissions over time. 



Yet, the pattern of regrowth is highly variable and depends on factors like fire intensity, frequency, and forest type.



Understanding this balance is crucial, as future forest management and reforestation strategies could greatly benefit from insights into optimizing carbon recapture capabilities of post-fire landscapes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-and-policy">Future research and policy</h2>



The findings of Chao Yue and his research team open up a myriad of opportunities for further exploration and the refinement of strategies to combat climate change. 



Future research could delve deeper into the efficacy of increasing broadleaf tree populations, assessing their true potential in mitigating post-fire surface warming. 



Simultaneously, policy-makers are being urged to consider these insights as they formulate wildfire management strategies and climate action plans.



Integrating this knowledge into environmental policies could not only help in reducing the adverse impacts of forest fires but also enhance our approach to sustainable forestry and land management. 



Moreover, it underscores the importance of developing international collaborations to address this global challenge, ensuring the deployment of informed and effective solutions on a larger scale.

Antarctica, our planet's largest ice mass, holds the potential to drastically alter the global sea level. But how much can we expect it to rise? It's one of the most challenging aspects of climate science to answer. 



The Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS), along with the dynamic and unpredictable nature of the Southern Ocean, add a layer of uncertainty to this critical question.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antarctic-ice-mystery">Antarctic ice mystery</h2>



The good news? Scientists and researchers from Australia, the United States, and Canada are diligently working to reduce this uncertainty. What's their strategy? Well, they're focused on understanding the AIS's future behavior and how it influences sea-level rise projections.



The findings, currently accessible at the Australian Antarctic Data Centre, aim to guide research that can assist policymakers, decision-makers, and communities to plan and adapt in an ever-changing world.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sources-of-uncertainty">Sources of uncertainty</h2>



Under the leadership of Dr. Ben Galton-Fenzi, a glaciologist at the <a href="https://www.antarctica.gov.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian Antarctic Division</a>, the research team explored the significant processes and potential feedbacks that could speed up AIS retreat.



"We examined how Antarctica will contribute to sea-level change in the coming decades to centuries and where the uncertainties lie that make it difficult to project future behavior of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-sea-ice-makes-it-harder-for-seabirds-to-find-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a>," explained Dr. Galton-Fenzi.



"Then we looked at what processes and regions should be the focus of future scientific research to reduce these uncertainties."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-sea-level-rise-from-antarctica">Potential sea level rise from Antarctica</h2>



If the AIS were to melt entirely, it could lead to a staggering 58 meters of global sea-level rise. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet alone, which covers two-thirds of the continent, would account for about 52 meters of that rise. The rest would come from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Antarctic Peninsula.



However, the AIS's behavior is not as straightforward as it may seem. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/doomsday-glacier-may-collapse-sooner-than-we-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a> grows due to snowfall that compresses into ice, and shrinks due to iceberg calving and melting from beneath the ice shelves.



Yet, the complex interactions, feedback mechanisms, and ice movements involved in these processes often make it hard to predict the behavior of the Ice Sheet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-models-and-data">Climate models and data</h2>



Another factor contributing to this uncertainty is the limitation of current climate and ice sheet models in simulating these physical processes and feedback mechanisms.



Furthermore, there is a lack of data that captures physical processes on the correct time and spatial scales.



"When the Antarctic Ice Sheet loses mass from ice melting into the ocean, it weakens the gravitational pull of the continent, causing the sea level to drop close to the continent, but rise in more distant locations," said Dr. Galton-Fenzi, further explaining the less-known aspects of sea-level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reducing-the-uncertainties">Reducing the uncertainties </h2>



So what's our best course of action in this scientific quest? The researchers identified several priority areas, such as carrying out high-resolution measurements focused on regions particularly susceptible to rapid change. 



These observations will enhance our understanding of the physical processes impacting the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-will-the-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a>.



A better understanding of these processes will improve models and analytical tools, thereby refining projections of sea-level rise and helping inform effective policy decisions.



"By reducing the uncertainties associated with the Antarctic Ice Sheet and sea-level rise, we'll give policymakers and decision-makers better information to develop coastal planning measures, resilient infrastructure, and adaption strategies," said Dr. Galton-Fenzi.



He advocates for interdisciplinary and international collaboration, particularly in regions where the East Antarctic Ice Sheet may retreat rapidly. This collaboration, according to Dr. Galton-Fenzi, will enhance research quality and speed up progress in reducing the level of uncertainty.

Technological advancements are playing a crucial role in Antarctic research, helping scientists gather more accurate and detailed information than ever before.

Plate tectonics is the theory that explains how Earth's outer layer, known as the lithosphere, is split into several big and small plates. 



These tectonic plates float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere below and move slowly but steadily because of convection currents created by heat from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-inner-core-rotation-has-begun-moving-backwards/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth's core</a>. 



This movement shapes the planet’s surface and is responsible for creating continents, mountains, and ocean basins.



At the edges where these plates meet, some pretty significant geological events happen. When plates pull apart, they create space for magma to rise and form new crust, leading to mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys. 



When plates come together, one can be pushed beneath another in a process called subduction, which can create deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/citizen-scientists-uncover-microplastics-in-the-remote-arctic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean trenches</a> and volcanic activity. At transform boundaries, plates slide past each other, causing friction that triggers earthquakes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-tectonic-plate-system">Changing tectonic plate system</h2>



This fresh perspective not only sheds light on the dynamics at play in Türkiye but also provides invaluable insights into a new category of plate tectonics. 



These findings have far-reaching implications, particularly for planets that lack Earth’s familiar tectonic plate system, such as Mars and Venus.



Understanding how similar processes may occur on other celestial bodies opens the door to future planetary studies, expanding the scope of geological research beyond Earth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stages-of-the-crust-dripping">Stages of the crust dripping</h2>



The research, published in the journal Nature Communications, reveals that the basin's subsidence is primarily driven by a novel process known as multi-stage lithospheric dripping.



This term refers to the instability within the rocky material that makes up Earth’s crust and upper mantle, which causes dense rock fragments beneath the surface to gradually detach and sink into the more fluid layer of the planet’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mantle-heat-shaped-earths-crust-3-billion-years-ago/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mantle</a>. 



The instability not only reshapes the subsurface but also triggers the formation of significant surface features, including major landforms such as basins and mountainous folds.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-satellite-observations">Satellite observations</h2>



“Looking at the satellite data, we observed a circular feature at the Konya Basin where the crust is subsiding or the basin is deepening," noted Julia Andersen, who led the research.



"This prompted us to look at other geophysical data beneath the surface where we saw a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-map-shows-75-percent-of-the-u-s-at-risk-of-damaging-earthquakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic</a> anomaly in the upper mantle and a thickened crust, telling us there is high-density material there and indicating a likely mantle lithospheric drip.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-beyond-turkiye-s-plateau">Beyond Türkiye's plateau</h2>



Reflecting on their study, the scientists found parallels to their investigation in the formation of the Arizaro Basin in the Andes Mountains of South America.



This indicates that the phenomenon of lithospheric dripping is not localized but can occur anywhere on Earth, elucidating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/major-volcanic-events-linked-to-the-slowing-of-tectonic-plates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tectonic processes</a> usually found in mountain plateau regions.



The Central Anatolian Plateau has risen by approximately one kilometer over the last 10 million years due to lithospheric dripping, according to past studies.



As the thickened lithosphere dripped below the region, it formed a basin at the surface, which later rose when the weight below detached and sank further into the mantle's depths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lab-investigations-on-the-dripping-crust">Lab investigations on the dripping crust</h2>



In their quest to better understand these processes, the researchers recreated the dripping process in laboratory experiments. They designed analogue models that imitated the potential evolution of the process. 



Filling a plexiglass tank with a silicone polymer fluid to represent Earth’s fluid lower mantle, they added a mixture of this fluid with clay to replicate the upper-most solid section of the mantle, and finally a layer of ceramic and silica spheres to act as Earth’s crust.



Researchers noted that these experiments, in tandem with their geophysical and geological data collection, have been instrumental in understanding the complex mechanisms shaping our earth's terrain.



“The findings show these major tectonic events are linked, with one lithospheric drip potentially triggering a host of further activity deep in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-interior-is-cooling-faster-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planetary interior</a>,” Andersen concluded.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-advancing-geological-research">Advancing geological research</h2>



Türkiye's unique geological features, such as the Central Anatolian Plateau and the Konya Basin, provide scientists with unparalleled opportunities to study tectonic processes that shape not only our planet but others as well. 



The country's dynamic landscape is becoming a focal point for research into phenomena like dripping of Earth's crust, helping researchers better understand Earth's crustal evolution.



The findings from Türkiye may also serve as a model for investigating similar processes on planets like Mars and Venus, where tectonics differ but share underlying mechanisms of mantle dynamics.

Peering into the dynamic frontier where the ocean and the atmosphere meet, we uncover a unique and delicate micro-environment known as the sea surface microlayer. 



This thin, yet vital, boundary is teeming with complex interactions that govern the delicate balance between the air and sea.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sea-surface-microlayer">Sea surface microlayer</h2>



Crucially, the sea surface microlayer has enormous implications for nutrient exchange, pollutant migration, and the transport of organic matter between the ocean and the atmosphere. It plays a pivotal role in both local ecosystems and global climate regulation.



A dedicated team of researchers from the University of Delaware (UD) and the University of Georgia (UGA) set out to better understand the fine nuances of this oceanic phenomenon and its role in climate regulation and carbon cycles



The research team faced setbacks on two previous cruises due to stormy weather and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they remained undeterred, embarking on their third attempt aboard UD's Research Vessel Hugh R. Sharp.



The goal was to unlock the mysteries of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/monitoring-the-dynamic-shape-of-the-sea-surface/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea surface</a> microlayer in the North Atlantic Ocean.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-significance-of-the-sea-surface-microlayer">Significance of the sea surface microlayer</h2>



Andrew Wozniak, an associate professor in UD’s <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">School of Marine Science and Policy</a> (SMSP), emphasized the significance of this ocean layer. He said the sea surface microlayer is a unique micro-environment.



"It accumulates organic material of a certain kind and then reaches the air-sea interface and accumulates there, creating interesting physical properties that influence the exchange of materials back and forth,” said Wozniak. 



This delicate balance of materials between air and sea could reshape our understanding of gas exchange and the emission of particles into the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-atmosphere-is-expanding-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">atmosphere</a>, explained Wozniak.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surfactants-and-atmospheric-chemistry">Surfactants and atmospheric chemistry</h2>



A key focus of the team’s research involved surfactants - compounds that reduce the surface tension of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-time-capsules-seawater-holds-secrets-of-ancient-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seawater</a>.



“We want to understand what surfactants are in the ocean, how they partition to the microlayer, and what affects their concentration and their composition,” said Amanda Frossard, an associate professor in UGA’s Department of Chemistry.



The research is crucial for understanding how surfactants influence air-sea gas exchange and atmospheric chemistry.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-samples-from-the-sea-surface-microlayer">Samples from the sea surface microlayer</h2>



Studying the sea surface microlayer presents a host of technical challenges, largely due to its incredibly thin structure, measuring only 100 micrometers -approximately the thickness of a piece of copy paper.



To collect enough samples, the research team repurposed a Rosette sampler, which is traditionally used for deep water sampling.



“We extend the sampler off the back of the boat, dip it in, lift it up and bring it back on board, and then scrape the glass,” explained Wozniak.



This technique allowed the researchers to collect the surfactant molecules clinging to the glass plate as it emerged from the water.



The significance of these surfactants, said Wozniak, lies in their ability to reduce surface tension, which directly impacts turbulence at the air-water interface. "That <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-ocean-turbulence-impacts-carbon-storage/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">turbulence</a> is a key factor in how gases can go back and forth."



Although wind speed has traditionally been the key factor in quantifying gas exchange, Wozniak and his team believe that surfactants play a significant role in influencing these models, which currently have large margins of error.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-sea-and-oceanic-research">Future of sea and oceanic research</h2>



Once the samples were collected, the team conducted detailed analyses both onboard and back at their respective universities. 



Students, including doctoral candidates Felix Agblemanyo and Tia Ouyang from UD, as well as undergraduates Audrey Tong and Ava Grove, contributed to the research, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge climate science.



“This was our solution to study the sea-surface microlayer, and it really is a great example of collaboration between the ship crew and the scientists to solve a real challenge,” said Wozniak.



With this foundational research, the team hopes to refine climate models and further our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-spray-releases-water-pollution-into-the-air/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air-sea</a> interactions, paving the way for more accurate predictions of carbon cycles and climate regulation.



As we continue to strive for a deeper understanding of our oceans and the complex processes at play, this oceanographic research stands as a powerful example of the perseverance and collaborative efforts required in the face of such intricate environmental challenges.

Imagine a world where the ice that has held our planet's deep secrets for millenia begins to melt. Permafrost, a thick layer of frozen soil that blankets the Arctic and Subarctic regions, is under threat from global warming.



Aided by warmer climates, this icy ground is now thawing at an unprecedented rate with a ripple effect of repercussions including dangerous wildfires.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-permafrost-thaw-and-wildfires">Permafrost thaw and wildfires</h2>



In a recent publication, a team of international climate scientists and permafrost experts unravel the chilling consequences of the accelerating permafrost thaw.



The study is yet another confirmation that greenhouse gas emissions are setting us on an irreversible course of climate change.



Guided by a new breed of climate computer models, the research presents an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-arctic-ice-weakens-the-strength-of-el-nino-events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">alarming scenario</a> - thawing permafrost could trigger a surge in wildfires in the Subarctic and Arctic regions of northern Canada and Siberia.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sowing-the-seeds-of-destruction">Sowing the seeds of destruction</h2>



As our planet heats up and permafrost thaws, the soil loses its moisture content. This one-two punch of increased warmth and dryness paves the way for wildfires to thrive.



And this isn't just a theory. Observations already point to the fact that warm and unusually dry conditions have intensified wildfires in the Arctic region.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-permafrost-thaw-wildfires-and-climate-change">Permafrost thaw, wildfires, and climate change</h2>



Previously, climate models skimmed over the complex interplay between global warming, permafrost thawing, soil water, and wildfires. 



However, this new study takes a giant leap forward by incorporating these factors into the <a href="https://www.cesm.ucar.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Community Earth System Model</a>, a comprehensive earth system model that dovetails the interactions between soil water, permafrost, and wildfires.



Understanding and simulating future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-arctic-ice-changing-global-climate-warm-arctic-cold-eurasia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">anthropogenic warm</a><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-arctic-ice-changing-global-climate-warm-arctic-cold-eurasia/">ing</a> and its impact on wildfire occurrence is no small feat. The role of accelerated permafrost thawing must be taken into consideration.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-trip-through-time">A trip through time</h2>



In their quest to separate the human-induced increase in greenhouse gas emissions from naturally occurring variations in climate, the research team turned to a sophisticated ensemble of 50 past-to-future simulations. 



The experts journeyed through time, spanning from 1850 to the projected future of 2100 CE under a specific greenhouse gas emission scenario.



This time-traveling exercise was conducted by scientists from the <a href="https://ibsclimate.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IBS Center for Climate Physics</a> in Busan, South Korea, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.



The simulations, generated on the IBS supercomputer Aleph, revealed a chilling reality.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tipping-point-of-fire-and-ice">Tipping point of fire and ice</h2>



According to the simulations, anthropogenic permafrost thawing in the Subarctic and Arctic regions will intensify by the mid to late 21st century. 



Excess soil water will drain quickly in many areas, resulting in a steep decline in soil moisture, and a subsequent rise in surface warming and atmospheric drying.



"These conditions will intensify wildfires," said Dr. In-Won Kim, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at the IBS Center for Climate Physics, South Korea.



Dr. Kim warns of drastic transitions from virtually no fires to very intense wildfires in just a matter of years in the second half of the 21st century.



Vegetation biomass, a significant player in fire propagation, is predicted to increase in high-latitude areas due to rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations. This so-called CO2 fertilization effect acts as an accelerant to the already burgeoning fire crisis.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-permafrost-thaw-and-wildfire-intensification">Permafrost thaw and wildfire intensification </h2>



Professor Hanna Lee, co-author of the study at the <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Norwegian University of Science and Technology</a>, emphasized the importance of improving our understanding of small-scale hydrological processes in climate models.



Permafrost thaw and wildfire intensification dynamics are not merely isolated phenomena, but they are components of a complex feedback loop.



"Wildfires release carbon dioxide, and black and organic carbon into the atmosphere, which can affect climate and feed back to the permafrost thawing processes in the Arctic," noted study co-author Professor Axel Timmermann, director of the ICCP.



The next step calls for the integration of fire emissions and atmospheric processes into earth system models. 



Our understanding of the great thaw and its repercussions continues to evolve. Researchers now believe that this frigid epoch could provide crucial insights into future El Niño weather events, one of the most influential climate patterns affecting global weather today. 



By examining data from the last Ice Age, scientists are uncovering clues about how El Niño might behave in a warming world.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-age-link-to-el-nino">Ice Age link to El Niño</h2>



El Niño is a climate pattern marked by irregular warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.



It may seem odd to connect the frosty Ice Age and the warming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-event-may-push-earth-towards-its-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">El Niño</a> phenomenon, but a recent study led by the University of Arizona bridges this gap. 



The research, published in the journal Nature, combines data from ancient marine shells and advanced climate modeling to explore how El Niño patterns might evolve in a warming world.



Kaustubh Thirumalai is the study's co-lead author and assistant professor in the University of Arizona’s Department of Geosciences.



"El Niño is a formidable force of nature - it induces <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/growing-risk-of-summer-droughts-linked-to-changes-in-river-flow/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a>, floods, and wildfires, disrupting marine and terrestrial ecosystems across the planet, with pervasive societal impacts across numerous sectors, from agriculture to the aviation industry," said Thirumalai.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-el-nino-conundrum">The El Niño conundrum</h2>



El Niño events typically recur every two to seven years. However, forecasting how these events may change in the future is a key challenge for climate scientists. 



"There are several state-of-the-art <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperature-increase-2023-blew-past-all-climate-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate models</a> out there, and they suggest different El Niño responses to ongoing and future human-caused warming," noted Thirumalai



"Some say El Niño variations will increase, others say they will decrease - it is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon. So, addressing what might happen to El Niño is a key priority for climate science."



To address this uncertainty, the research team - including collaborators from the <a href="https://www.arizona.edu/admissions?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_term=university%20of%20arizona&amp;utm_campaign=brand_us_tier_3_search&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw0t63BhAUEiwA5xP54fRMMjcyfERK9cf8gWAldTc6J9yx2PQFqRH-DzW1bEZJWzY7QcbydhoCyNEQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Arizona</a>, UC Boulder, University of Texas, Middlebury College, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - turned to the past.



The experts focused on the Last Glacial Maximum, a period around 20,000 years ago when ice sheets covered much of North America and Europe.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-time-capsules-unlocking-el-nino-s-past">Time capsules: Unlocking El Niño's past</h2>



To simulate conditions from the Last Glacial Maximum to the present day, the researchers employed the Community Earth System Model, a project primarily led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research. 



To validate this model, the team compared the results with data from tiny marine organisms called foraminifera. 



"These beautiful, microscopic creatures, which float in the upper ocean, build shells that lock in the ocean temperature when they were alive," said Thirumalai.



By analyzing the shells in different sediment layers, the scientists were able to reconstruct <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-ocean-water-discovery-is-unlocking-secrets-of-earths-past/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient ocean</a> temperatures and match them with the model’s simulations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-toward-a-warmer-future">Looking toward a warmer future</h2>



The study revealed that El Niño variability was significantly lower during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-were-in-north-america-during-last-glacial-maximum/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last Glacial Maximum</a> compared to today. 



However, as the planet continues to warm, extreme El Niño events could become more frequent and intense, leading to severe weather disruptions globally.



"This gives us more confidence in the model's projections for the future," noted Thirumalai. "If it can accurately simulate past climate changes, it’s more likely to give us reliable predictions about future changes in the El Niño system."



The research shines a light on how studying Earth’s icy past can help prepare us for the warming world ahead warming world.

As glaciers melted and sea levels rose, the redistribution of heat and water transformed ocean circulation, which in turn impacted the climate on a global scale.

Massive ocean-warming El Niño events played a key role in driving the largest extinction event in Earth's history, which took place approximately 252 million years ago, according to new research.



Scientists recently learned a great deal about the extreme environmental shifts that occurred during the Permian-Triassic period, ultimately leading to the devastation of life on land and in the oceans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unknown-cause-of-mass-extinction-nbsp">Unknown cause of mass extinction&nbsp;</h2>



For years, scientists have linked the mass extinction to enormous volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia. 



These eruptions released vast amounts of carbon dioxide, accelerating climate warming and triggering the collapse of ecosystems at both land and at sea. 



However, one mystery remained: why did life on land, including plants and typically resilient species like insects, suffer as badly as marine life?



The study was published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.ado2030" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a> and co-led by the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a> and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).



“Climate warming alone cannot drive such devastating extinctions because, as we are seeing today, when the tropics become too hot, species migrate to the cooler, higher latitudes,” explained co-lead author Alexander Farnsworth, a senior research associate at Bristol.



“Our research has revealed that increased greenhouse gasses don’t just make the majority of the planet warmer, they also increase weather and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-birds-can-handle-climate-variability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate variability</a>, making it even more ‘wild’ and difficult for life to survive.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unpredictable-climate-swings-over-decades">Unpredictable climate swings over decades</h2>



The study reveals that the problem during the Permian-Triassic catastrophe was not simply the extreme heat but also the unpredictable swings in climate conditions over decades.&nbsp;



“Most life failed to adapt to these conditions, but thankfully a few things survived, without which we wouldn’t be here today. It was nearly, but not quite, the end of life on Earth,” said co-lead author Yadong Sun, a paleoclimatologist at the China University of Geosciences.



The temperature fluctuations during this period were uncovered by analyzing oxygen isotopes in the fossilized teeth of conodonts - tiny, extinct, swimming organisms.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-drastic-climate-change-nbsp">Evidence of drastic climate change&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers found a significant collapse in temperature gradients, particularly in low and mid-latitude regions, revealing just how dramatically the climate changed.



“Essentially, it got too hot everywhere. The changes responsible for the climate patterns identified were profound because there were much more intense and prolonged El Niño events than witnessed today," said Farnsworth. "Species were simply not equipped to adapt or evolve quickly enough."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-el-nino-events-nbsp">Extreme El Niño events&nbsp;</h2>



El Niño events, which are responsible for major shifts in weather patterns and temperatures today, were much more extreme and long-lasting during the Permian-Triassic period.&nbsp;



For instance, recent El Niño events have caused North American heatwaves and record global temperatures, such as the June 2024 heatwave when temperatures were 15°C hotter than normal.&nbsp;



While today's El Niño events typically last one to two years, the Permian-Triassic crisis saw Mega-El Niño events persist for much longer, resulting in a decade of drought followed by years of flooding, making it impossible for most species to adapt.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-climate-in-a-state-of-crisis-nbsp">Earth's climate in a state of crisis&nbsp;</h2>



Paul Wignall, a professor of palaeoenvironments at the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a> and co-author of the study, emphasized that “the climate was all over the place,” making survival difficult.&nbsp;



This extreme climate variability also contributed to the frequent wildfires, as reflected in the abundance of charcoal found in rock layers from that era.&nbsp;



“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earliest-record-of-wildfire-pushed-back-by-ten-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wildfires</a> become very common if you have a drought-prone climate. Earth got stuck in a crisis state where the land was burning and the oceans stagnating. There was nowhere to hide,” added David Bond, a palaeontologist at the University of Hull.



The research highlights why the Permian-Triassic extinction was so much more devastating than other volcanic events throughout Earth's history.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deadly-feedback-loop">Deadly feedback loop</h2>



The researchers found that these mega-El Niños created a feedback loop, causing the dieback of vegetation.&nbsp;



Plants are essential for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and are the foundation of the food web. This means that their decline further exacerbated the buildup of atmospheric CO2, amplifying the warming effects of ongoing volcanism.



This feedback loop also helps explain a long-standing puzzle: why did the extinction on land occur tens of thousands of years before marine extinctions?&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-devastatingly-rapid-climate-change">Devastatingly rapid climate change</h2>



“Whilst the oceans were initially shielded from the temperature rises, the mega-El Niños caused temperatures on land to exceed most species' <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/temperature-tolerance-has-co-evolved-with-sexual-selection/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">thermal tolerances</a> at rates so rapid that they could not adapt in time,” Sun explained. Only species capable of rapid migration had a chance to survive.



Mass extinctions are rare but pivotal events in Earth's history, reshaping life and evolution.&nbsp;



“The Permo-Triassic mass extinction, although devastating, would ultimately see the rise of dinosaurs becoming the dominant species thereafter, just as the Cretaceous mass extinction led to the rise of mammals, and eventually humans,” Farnsworth concluded.

However, recent scientific findings have brought a new perspective to this issue. Researchers have uncovered data suggesting that the risks posed to forests by climate change and human pollution may not be as dire as previously thought. 



These results offer hope that forests, with their complex plant-soil interactions, may possess greater resilience in the face of environmental stressors than initially anticipated.



This breakthrough comes from an innovative study led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.unh.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of New Hampshire</a> (UNH).



The research marks the first time the combined impact of rising temperatures and increased nitrogen levels - driven by climate change and fossil fuel emissions - has been thoroughly examined.

Study lead author Melissa Knorr is a lab research supervisor in the UNH College of Life Sciences and Agriculture.



"What is most exciting about this study is that it's one of the longest-running experiments to look at two global change pressures instead of just focusing on one. This is particularly important to study in the Northeast, where the region has experienced greater nitrogen deposition historically, and now faster <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/single-degree-temperature-warming-boreal-forests-wreak-havoc/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming</a> than in other parts of the country," explained Knorr.



The study was focused on data gathered over 16 years at the Harvard Forest Long-Term Ecological Research site in Massachusetts. At this site, researchers continuously exposed the soil to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-alter-photosynthesis-and-plant-growth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">higher temperatures</a> and nitrogen fertilization.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-dynamics-in-detail">Carbon dynamics in detail</h2>



The previously existing belief about the impact of climate change on forests was that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-soils-release-more-carbon-than-plants-can-replace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming soil</a> led to significant carbon loss over time, while increased nitrogen levels caused carbon buildup in the soil. 



However, the new research directly challenges this long-standing belief, offering a more nuanced understanding of how these factors interact.



"Plants, particularly through root turnover – the natural process where plant roots grow, die and decompose - and increased plant growth and activity, add new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-pool-of-global-soil-carbon-alters-climate-change-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon to the soil</a>," said study co-author Professor Serita Frey.



"And while microbial activity breaks down organic matter, releasing CO₂, we observed that enhanced plant carbon inputs belowground - caused by warmer temperatures and increased nitrogen - help maintain soil carbon levels, counteracting what would otherwise have been a significant net loss of carbon from the soil."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-changing-climate-and-ecosystem">A changing climate and ecosystem</h2>



Over the last century, New England’s average temperature has risen by 1.7°F, and while nitrogen deposition rates are on the decline, they remain five to six times higher than pre-industrial levels. 



The excess nitrogen, deposited through rain and snowfall, can damage <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-pollution-threatens-the-health-of-plants-and-pollinators/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">plant health</a> and acidify waterways.



Despite these sobering statistics, the findings from this new study highlight the resilience of forest ecosystems and emphasize the critical role that plant-soil interactions can play in managing them.



"By challenging previous predictions from studies that looked at only one factor alone, this research offers a fuller picture of how ecosystems respond to multiple stressors and forests' role in combating climate change," said Knorr. 



"The study offers insights that could inform conservation strategies to enhance carbon sequestration and preserve forest health across the Northeast."

The research sheds light on the compelling necessity for policy changes as urban areas worldwide scramble to deal with soaring temperatures.



"There is growing interest in understanding the interaction between weather and transportation and the ability of communities and the nation’s infrastructure to withstand extreme conditions and events," noted the researchers.



"This study aims to provide detailed insights on how people adjust and change their activity-travel and time use behaviors in the face of extreme heat conditions."

The research was based on data obtained from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) and weather updates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). 



The focus was on 11 major U.S. metropolises including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heatwaves-disrupt-ordinary-routines">Heatwaves disrupt ordinary routines</h2>



The study's findings are striking. The results suggest that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-temperatures-will-soon-set-new-records-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">scorching temperatures</a> significantly curtail the time people spend outside their homes.



Quite understandably, people prefer to remain indoors, reduce outdoor activities, and avoid non-essential travel during extremely hot days. 



Data indicates a notable dip in journeys undertaken for leisure, shopping, and socializing when temperatures rise.



In addition, individuals tend to reschedule their trips to cooler times of the day, favoring early morning or late evening ventures to evade the midday heat.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transportation-preferences-shift-during-heat">Transportation preferences shift during heat</h2>



Extreme heat scenarios introduce a noticeable shift in transportation behaviors. The use of personal cars escalates, while walking, biking, and public transit usage takes a severe beating.



On average, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/51-percent-of-the-world-relies-on-car-commutes-every-day/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">use of public transit</a> plummets by almost 50% on sweltering days, as individuals seek solace in the comfort of air-conditioned private vehicles. 



This shift poses substantial hurdles for cities striving to promote sustainable transportation modes, especially as weather extremes become more frequent.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-heat-s-heaviest-burden">The heat's heaviest burden </h2>



The research further revealed that some groups bear the brunt of extreme heat more than others.



Low-income individuals and those without access to cars are forced to rely on walking or public transportation, thereby exposing them to perilous temperatures. 



These individuals, facing the most rigid work schedules, often have no choice but to travel, even when temperatures are unbearable.



“We see that extreme heat exacerbates inequities in mobility and activity-travel participation,” said study lead author Ram M. Pendyala.



“Those who are already at a disadvantage, face even greater risks during heat waves. This is a clear call for targeted policy interventions to protect the most vulnerable population groups.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-policy-changes-to-beat-the-heat">Policy changes to beat the heat</h2>



Given these conclusions, the researchers have proposed a series of policy recommendations to alleviate the extreme heat impacts on communities.



These include introducing shaded public spaces, offering transportation vouchers for vulnerable populations, and proclaiming "heat days" akin to "snow days," during which public movement is limited to protect health and safety. 



Urban improvements such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/us-cities-are-about-to-get-a-lot-greener-with-1-billion-for-tree-planting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planting more trees</a> and using heat-reflective <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/concrete-pavement-will-degrade-faster-as-the-climate-heats-up/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">materials on pavements</a> could also help make cities more heat-resilient.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-charges-are-needed-for-a-hotter-future">Charges are needed for a hotter future</h2>



With the frequency and intensity of heatwaves projected to rise due to climate change, the study’s findings could not have come at a more critical time. 



The research highlights the urgent need for cities to weave heat mitigation tactics into their transportation and urban planning initiatives.



The researchers hope their findings will prompt policymakers to take swift steps towards creating more heat-resilient cities. 



"Our goal is to provide the evidence necessary to drive meaningful change,” said Pendyala.

As the world races to meet critical climate targets set by the Paris Agreement, carbon capture and storage (CCS) has emerged as an essential technology for reducing global warming.



CCS is designed to capture carbon dioxide and store it deep underground, with applications that range from curbing industrial emissions to achieving negative emissions through processes like bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) and direct air capture. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-slow-pace-of-carbon-capture-technology">The slow pace of carbon capture technology </h2>



However, despite its promise, a growing body of research highlights a concerning gap between the current pace of CCS deployment and the scale needed to meet these climate goals. 



Without rapid and extensive implementation, CCS may fall short of the role it must play in helping limit global temperature rise to 2°C, let alone the more ambitious 1.5°C target.



The urgency surrounding CCS highlights the need for significant advancements, both in technology and infrastructure, to make a substantial dent in global carbon emissions. Can this technology rise to the challenge in time?

"CCS is an important technology for achieving negative emissions and also essential for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/circular-economy-needed-to-reduce-americas-carbon-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reducing carbon emissions</a> from some of the most carbon-intensive industries," said Professor Jessica Jewell of <a href="https://www.chalmers.se/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chalmers University of Technology</a>.



"Yet our results show that major efforts are needed to bridge the gap between the demonstration projects in place today and the massive deployment we need to mitigate climate change.” 



A detailed study conducted by researchers at Chalmers, in collaboration with experts from the University of Bergen, presents a bleak outlook.



The team assessed the growth and future of carbon capture and storage technology, considering whether it's on track for fulfilling the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/paris-agreement-which-countries-are-honoring-their-pledges/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paris Climate Agreement</a>.



The study indicates that we can sequester, at best, 600 Gigatons (Gt) of carbon dioxide with carbon capture and storage technology over the 21st century.



However, reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggest that we need to capture and store over 1,000 Gt of CO2 by the end of the century to stay within our climate targets.

Beyond the quantity of carbon that must be sequestered, time is of the essence. The sooner we start using carbon capture and storage extensively, the greater the chances of keeping our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-temperature-increase-2023-blew-past-all-climate-models/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global temperature rise</a> within 1.5°C or 2°C.



The researchers emphasized that much of their study focused on how quickly carbon capture and storage technology could expand.



Notably, policy-driven initiatives like the EU Net-Zero Industry Act and the Inflation Reduction Act in the United States are steering the development of carbon capture and storage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-carbon-capture-technology">Increasing carbon capture technology</h2>



Should all current plans come to fruition, the world will have increased its CCS capacity to eight times the current level by 2030. But this projection isn't free from doubt.



"Even though there are ambitious plans for CCS, there are big doubts about whether these are feasible," said Tsimafei Kazlou, PhD candidate at the University of Bergen.



"About 15 years ago, during another wave of interest in CCS, planned projects failed at a rate of almost 90 percent. If historic failure rates continue, capacity in 2030 will be at most twice what it is today, which would be insufficient for climate targets." 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-capture-and-future-climate">Carbon capture and future climate </h2>



The good news is that even with the gloomy outlook, there are lessons to be learned from the past. While CCS growth isn't linear, we can look at the growth rates of other technologies. 



To meet requirements, carbon capture and storage will need to grow at the rate of wind power in the early 2000s.



From the 2040s, CCS will need to match the peak growth of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/molten-salt-could-reshape-the-future-of-nuclear-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nuclear energy</a> during the 1970s and 1980s. However, even such a monumental growth rate might not be enough to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, although the 2°C target could be within reach.



In conclusion, the study highlights the need for robust policy support for CCS, coupled with a rapid expansion of other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/decarbonizing-worlds-industrial-emissions-possible-with-current-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">decarbonization</a> technologies to meet climate targets.



The journey to a cleaner and safer planet is before us, and the question is, are we prepared to take the leap?

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Scientists have determined that 2022 was the 5th warmest year since 1880. Furthermore, the last nine consecutive years have been the warmest on record.



From devastating floods and wildfires to natural disasters like Hurricane Ian, 2022 showed us yet again how a warming climate affects people across the globe.&nbsp;



"As we look back at 20:22 and years past, we see that each year we better understand the challenges we face and how important it is to meet them," says NASA.

During 2020, average global temperatures matched the hottest year on record. The hurricane season was also record-breaking, with many of the storms intensifying at extraordinary speeds. According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
