Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.

Securing the world's water supply is among the most pressing global challenges today. Researchers at Stockholm University have introduced an innovative method to better quantify the global risk of water scarcity.&nbsp;



The findings suggest that the risks to the world's water supply may be more significant than previously estimated when environmental conditions and governance in regions where rain-producing moisture originates are taken into account.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-global-water-supply-nbsp">Understanding the global water supply&nbsp;</h2>



Traditionally, the global water supply is understood as rain falling on the Earth's surface, subsequently stored in aquifers, lakes, and rivers. This conventional understanding is often used to evaluate water security and the potential for water scarcity.&nbsp;



However, a new study published in <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s44221-024-00291-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Water</a> challenges this perspective by highlighting the importance of governance and environmental conditions in regions upwind - where the moisture that eventually falls as rain is generated.



“Water supply really originates beforehand, with moisture evaporated from land or in the ocean traveling in the atmosphere before falling as rain. This upwind moisture is commonly overlooked when assessing water availability,” explained senior author Fernando Jaramillo, an associate professor in physical geography at <a href="https://www.su.se/cmlink/stockholm-university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm University</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-origins-of-rainfall">Origins of rainfall</h2>



Typically, when a lake or river is shared between different countries or authorities, water assessments and regulations focus on upstream factors - considering the conditions upriver from the water body.&nbsp;



The new study, however, adopts an upwind perspective, which takes into account the areas where evaporated water is transported before it precipitates as rain. This area, known as a “precipitationshed,” can span vast regions of the Earth's surface.



“For instance, in tropical South America, most of the Amazon basin is downstream of the Andes mountain range, whereas large areas of the Andes are in themselves downwind of the Amazon rainforest and depend on it. This interdependency makes these two regions reliant on each other for water supply,” Jaramillo said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-higher-risks-of-water-scarcity-nbsp">Higher risks of water scarcity&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers analyzed 379 hydrological basins globally, revealing that water security risks are considerably higher when the upwind origins of water are factored into the equation.



“With this approach, we see that 32,900 km³/year of water requirements worldwide face very high risk, a near 50 percent increase compared to the 20,500 km³/year resulting from the more traditional upstream focus,” said lead author José Posada, a former doctoral student at Stockholm University.



Political control and land use changes in upwind regions can have profound effects on downwind water availability. For example, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deforestation-has-darkened-coastal-waters-off-belize/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">deforestation</a> and agricultural development in these areas can reduce the moisture provided by vegetation, subsequently decreasing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-becoming-more-intense-in-the-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rainfall</a> downwind and heightening water security risks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-water-security-across-different-regions">Water security across different regions</h2>



“For coastal countries such as the Philippines, most of the rain comes from the sea, so land-use changes pose minimal risk to their water security. Conversely, for inland countries like Niger, where rainfall is largely sourced from moisture that evaporates in neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Ghana, land-use changes in these upwind regions can significantly impact water security,” Jaramillo explained.



This implies that political factors, such as environmental management and regulatory policies in areas where moisture first evaporates, can greatly influence water safety in distant regions.



“The Congo River basin, for example, heavily relies on moisture from neighboring countries with low environmental performance and governance according to global indicators. This makes the basin vulnerable to risks from potential deforestation and unregulated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/land-use-changes-expose-the-amazon-to-environmental-threats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">land use changes</a> in those neighboring areas,” said co-author Lan Wang-Erlandsson, a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Center at Stockholm University.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-all-water-is-connected">All water is connected</h2>



The study underscores the importance of considering upwind perspectives in environmental regulation and governance. It highlights the interdependence between countries situated upstream/downwind and downstream/upwind.



“It is not possible to ignore the interdependence between countries. In the end, all water is connected, so we should not only mind how we manage our water resources within a region or country but also how our neighboring countries do,” Wang-Erlandsson said.



The researchers hope their findings will help identify key areas and stakeholders for cooperation strategies aimed at mitigating the causes of water-related tensions. This includes considering atmospheric water flows in transboundary decision-making and water governance frameworks.



“We stress the need for international cooperation to effectively manage upwind moisture sources,” Jaramillo concluded.

Global water security relies on the origins of rainfall

In the chilly waters off the western Antarctic Peninsula, scientists have made a thrilling discovery: a new species of Antarctic dragonfish, Akarotaxis gouldae.



The discovery of this "Banded Dragonfish" highlights both the hidden depths of biodiversity and the fragile state of the Antarctic ecosystem. The species was identified by researchers at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) at William &amp; Mary.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-akarotaxis-gouldae">Akarotaxis gouldae</h2>



The discovery of Akarotaxis gouldae began when larval specimens, initially assumed to be Akarotaxis nudiceps, were collected during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-are-rapidly-escalating-the-threat-of-nanoplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a> trawling missions off the Antarctic coast.



Upon comparing their DNA with Akarotaxis nudiceps specimens from collections at institutions like VIMS, <a href="https://www.yale.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yale University</a>, and the <a href="https://www.mnhn.fr/fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle</a> in Paris, significant genetic differences became apparent. 



The experts were able to confirm that these specimens belonged to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Akarotaxis-gouldae_antarctic-dragonfish_new-species_specimens_credit-andrew-corso_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previously unrecognized species</a>.



Study lead author Andrew Corso conducted the research during his PhD studies at VIMS under the guidance of advisors Eric Hilton and Deborah Steinberg. Corso emphasized the importance of genetic testing in modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/experts-in-insect-taxonomy-threatened-by-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">taxonomy</a>.

“In the world of fish taxonomy, it’s becoming common to distinguish species with genetics alone. Genetic testing is an extremely valuable tool, but our discovery highlights the importance of early life stage morphology and natural history collections like those at <a href="https://www.vims.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">VIMS</a> and other institutions,” said Corso.



Subsequent morphological analysis of adult Akarotaxis gouldae samples from ichthyology collections worldwide confirmed these genetic findings. 



“There are two distinct bands on the sides of adult Akarotaxis gouldae that are not present on Akarotaxis nudiceps, so we were surprised that the species already existed in collections but had been previously overlooked,” noted Corso.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-empowering-insights-from-genetic-testing">Empowering insights from genetic testing</h2>



Through time-calibrated phylogeny, Corso and his colleague Thomas Desvignes from the University of Oregon’s <a href="https://ion.uoregon.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Neuroscience</a> estimated that Akarotaxis gouldae diverged as a separate species approximately 780,000 years ago, when the Southern Ocean was predominantly covered in glaciers.



“We hypothesize that a population of dragonfishes may have become isolated within deep trenches under glaciers, surviving on food pushed in by the moving ice," Corso explained.



Once the glaciers retreated, this subpopulation had become distinct enough to be reproductively incompatible with Akarotaxis nudiceps."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ecology-of-antarctic-dragonfish">Ecology of Antarctic dragonfish</h2>



Despite their crucial ecological role, much remains unknown about Antarctic dragonfish. These species, including Akarotaxis gouldae, inhabit the deep, remote waters of the Southern Ocean.



The dragonfish species exhibit unique behaviors like nest guarding in shallower coastal waters, and their offspring remain closer to the surface during the larval stage.



Examination of female dragonfish ovaries has shown limited reproductive capacity, and larval sampling suggests that Akarotaxis gouldae is confined to the waters around the western Antarctic Peninsula.



“Akarotaxis gouldae appear to have one of the smallest ranges of any fish endemic to the Southern Ocean,” said Corso. 



“This limited range combined with their low reproductive capacity and the presence of early life stages in shallower waters suggest that this is a vulnerable species that could be impacted by the krill fishery.”



These dragonfish serve as a vital food source for many Antarctic species, including <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emperor-penguins-will-not-survive-the-current-rate-of-sea-ice-decline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">penguins</a>, whose populations are already under threat from changing environmental conditions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-akarotaxis-gouldae-honors-a-scientific-legacy">Akarotaxis gouldae honors a scientific legacy</h2>



The naming of Akarotaxis gouldae honors the legacy of the ARSV Laurence M. Gould, a vessel that significantly contributed to Antarctic research for over two decades.



The vessel’s decommissioning marked a shift in the U.S. Antarctic Program's priorities, highlighting the ongoing need for support and resources to continue studying the region's unique <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-ocean-day-a-unified-approach-to-protect-biodiversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>. 



“To me, the loss of the ARSV Laurence M. Gould marks a setback in the scientific study of the Antarctic region. Antarctica is warming faster than anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere, and there is untold biodiversity in the region that we’re only beginning to understand," Corso concluded.



"By naming this fish after the ship, we hope to honor its scientific contributions while also bringing attention to the need for additional resources to study this unique <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystem</a>."



This discovery emphasizes the urgent need to protect fragile ecosystems and the invaluable biodiversity they support.

It's ironic how climate change, which is partially fueled by deforestation, is now pushing food production northward and threatening the very lands traditionally reserved for timber.



This encroachment poses a serious challenge for our food and timber supply, often considered two fundamental pillars of modern-day life. 



As these vital sectors increasingly compete for the same space, the delicate balance between maintaining forest ecosystems and meeting the growing demands for agriculture becomes ever more precarious.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-role-of-rising-temperatures">The role of rising temperatures </h2>



Rising temperatures, notorious for making parts of the globe inhospitable, are also inadvertently making colder regions far more conducive for agriculture.



The sight of vineyards in Britain, once an anomaly, has today transformed into a visual demonstration of how climate change is redefining the world's agricultural landscape. However, the consequences of this shift are grim.



An extensive study led by researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> brings to light a looming issue. As climate change makes the northern regions more suitable for farming, it threatens to edge out timber production - a critical resource for our civilization.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-conflicting-demands-for-food-and-timber">Conflicting demands for food and timber</h2>



Used for creating everything from paper and cardboard, to furniture and buildings, the importance of timber cannot be overstated. 



This brewing conflict between the demands for food and timber finds its roots in the unanticipated consequences of climate change.



Until recently, this indirect fallout of rising global temperatures had been largely overlooked. The study warns that ignoring this issue any longer could have dire consequences as our demand for both food and wood continues to rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-planning-for-the-future-of-timber">Planning for the future of timber </h2>



If we fail to decarbonize society, the study projects a worst-case scenario where over a quarter of existing forestry land could become more suitable for farming by the end of the century. This translates to about 320 million hectares, an area equivalent to the size of India.



Currently, prime forestry lands are concentrated in the northern hemisphere, particularly in the US, Canada, China, and Russia. 



The study warns that 90% of these lands could become agriculturally productive by 2100. Russia would be the hardest hit, with huge swathes of its timberlands turning more suitable for agriculture, especially for potato, soy, and wheat farming.



"We've got to be thinking fifty years ahead because if we want timber in the future, we need to be planting it now. The trees that will be logged by the end of this century are already in the ground - they’re on much slower cycles than food crops," warned Dr. Chris Bousfield of Cambridge’s Department of Plant Sciences.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-demands-of-a-growing-population">Demands of a growing population</h2>



By 2050, both food and wood demand are projected to double as the global population continues to grow and affluence increases. The climate change-induced push for agricultural land threatens to deepen the food and wood crisis.



A common response to rising timber demands has been to extend forestry into untouched boreal or tropical forests. 



However, these regions have stood pristine for millennia, and logging here would release colossal amounts of carbon, jeopardizing biodiversity.



These areas are the last strongholds of the global wilderness, and untouched tropical forests are among the Earth's most biodiverse regions. "Preventing further expansion is critical," said Professor David Edwards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-is-reshaping-our-world">Climate change is reshaping our world</h2>



Even if the world meets net zero targets, the researchers argue that significant changes in regions suitable for timber and crop production are inevitable.



Timber production contributes over US $1.5 trillion per year to national economies globally. However, it is already threatened by climate change, which fuels heatwaves, wildfires, and pest infestations.



Add to this the mounting pressure from encroaching agriculture, and we find ourselves in the midst of a perfect storm.



"Securing our future wood supply might not seem as pressing as securing the food we need to eat and survive," said Dr. Oscar Morton. "But wood is just as integrated within our daily lives and we need to develop strategies to ensure both food and wood security into the future."

When you feel that salty breeze caress your face at the beach, you may not think of how it's traveling all the way from the ocean surface to high up in the atmosphere. Given a shove by breaking waves, particles known as sea spray aerosols are flung up into the air and can travel kilometers skywards.



Believe it or not, these tiny particles have a big job. They're key players in Earth's radiative balance - the delicate dance between the energy our planet absorbs, emits, and reflects.



The balance can impact our climate significantly. Mostly made up of salt, and sprinklings of other chemical compounds, these sea spray aerosols also carry along biologically produced proteins and sugars. Yes, these particles have had a slice of life.

The story of how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-deja-vu-oceans-may-slow-down-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">life from the ocean</a> can alter these aerosols and by extension, our environment, is as intriguing as it gets. How? By tweaking their dimensions, concentration, chemistry, and their propensity to soak up water.



You would think with such a big role, we would know a lot about them. Turns out, our knowledge on the average levels of organic content in sea spray has been a bit foggy.



Michael J. Lawler and his team at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (<a href="https://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NOAA</a>) have now put some pieces of the puzzle together.



Pulling data from four deployments of the NOAA Particle Analysis by Laser Mass Spectrometry (PALMS) instrument, the researchers set sail on NASA's Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission. The team conducted experiments in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean between 2016 and 2018.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-components-of-aerosols">Organic components of aerosols </h2>



So, how does life influence the composition of these aerosols? PALMS provided the answer by measuring the mass of organic molecules in the sampled aerosols. 



The researchers found that, most of the time, the organic mass fraction of sea spray aerosols is low, typically less than 10 percent. However, the smaller the particle, the higher the proportion of organics it harbors.



One might expect the organic mass fraction to change with the seasons, mirroring the fluctuating abundance of ocean life. Surprisingly, they found little seasonal variability, except for a couple of outliers in the Canadian Arctic and the southern middle to high latitudes.



The study also uncovered a much larger organic component residing higher in the troposphere, which they attribute to atmospheric chemical reactions rather than the original mix churned up by the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-and-arctic-mixing-is-crucial-for-earths-climate-stability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean waves</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-sea-spray-aerosols-in-climate">Role of sea spray aerosols in climate</h2>



Understanding the dynamics of sea spray aerosols is not merely an academic exercise; it holds profound implications for climate science. These tiny particles serve as nuclei around which cloud droplets can form, directly affecting cloud properties and behaviour. 



As clouds reflect sunlight back into space, a crucial factor in regulating Earth's temperature emerges, demonstrating the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-weaker-ocean-will-release-more-carbon-into-the-atmosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interconnectivity of oceanic and atmospheric systems</a>. Furthermore, the biological material within these aerosols can influence cloud microphysics and precipitation patterns. 



Thus, deciphering the complexities of sea spray aerosols contributes to our larger understanding of climate change and its myriad influences.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-next-wave-of-research">Next wave of research</h2>



Like a wave that leaves behind prints on the sand, this research opens up fresh avenues of inquiry. What role do organic molecules play in the creation of tiny sea spray aerosols smaller than 0.2 micrometers? How tiny aerosols in sea spray influence Earth's climate

Skepticism around the reality of climate change remains a significant global issue, despite an almost unanimous consensus among scientists that human activities are the primary driver of this environmental crisis. 



However, a new study suggests that actively revealing the extent of this scientific agreement to the public can effectively change perceptions, promoting greater awareness and strengthening belief in the severity and urgency of climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-perspective">Scientific perspective</h2>



The research, co-led by Bojana Većkalov at the <a href="https://www.uva.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Amsterdam</a> and Sandra Geiger of the <a href="https://www.univie.ac.at/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vienna</a>, finds that communicating the consensus among scientists can clear up misperceptions and bolster beliefs about climate change.



Scientific agreement that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/indisputable-evidence-of-human-caused-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">humans are the primary cause of climate change</a> has been robust since the 1980s, with an overwhelming 97% to 99.9% of climate scientists in agreement. 



"There is near-universal consensus in the peer-reviewed scientific literature that the climate is changing as a result of human activity," wrote the study authors. 



"However, the public often considerably underestimates this consensus, which is evident even in recent data from six European countries (estimates range from 65% in the United Kingdom to 71% in Ireland."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concern-about-the-dangers-of-climate-change">Concern about the dangers of climate change </h2>



Previous research, largely based in the United States, demonstrated that people who read a brief statement highlighting this overwhelming scientific consensus exhibited significantly increased awareness and concern about the reality and dangers of climate change. 



This effect was notably stronger compared to those who were exposed to unrelated expert statements, indicating the powerful influence of clear, concise messaging about scientific agreement on public perception.



In response to reading about the 97 percent consensus, people adjusted their perceptions of the scientific consensus, believed more in climate change, and worried more about it.



"However, they did not support public action on climate change more, though other research has found that support for action can be stimulated indirectly by changing how people think and feel about climate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humanity-should-brace-for-catastrophic-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">change</a>.” explained co-lead author Sandra Geiger.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-awareness-beyond-borders">Climate awareness beyond borders</h2>



Despite these promising findings, most research on consensus communication has focused on American perceptions. 



This study, involving an international team of 46 researchers, expanded the scope by surveying more than 10,500 participants across 27 countries on six continents. 



The results confirmed that communicating the scientific consensus on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/science-reporting-can-change-climate-change-beliefs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> effectively shifts beliefs globally, not just in the United States.



"These findings hold true across diverse cultures and contexts," added Bojana Većkalov, highlighting the global relevance of consensus messaging. 



However, the study also noted that while belief in climate change and concern about its impacts increased, this did not directly translate into greater support for public action against climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-crisis-consensus-a-surprising-result">Crisis consensus: A surprising result</h2>



Interestingly, when participants were informed that 88% of climate scientists view <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-climate-change-and-biodiversity-loss-are-one-indivisible-global-health-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change as a crisis</a>, this information did not significantly change their beliefs. 



Većkalov suggested that the smaller gap between the actual and perceived consensus on the crisis aspect may have limited its impact. 



“A smaller gap means people already perceived a high crisis consensus before learning about it, which might have prevented any further changes in beliefs about climate change,” she explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consensus-on-climate-change">Consensus on climate change</h2>



These findings emphasizes the importance of continuing to highlight the scientific consensus on climate change, both in media and everyday conversations. 



"In the face of increasing politicization of science and misinformation about climate change, cultivating universal awareness of the scientific consensus will help protect public understanding of the issue," noted Sander van der Linden, the senior author of the study.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-collaboration-for-global-impact">Global collaboration for global impact</h2>



The research not only sheds light on the importance of climate change communication but also highlights the value of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-climate-adaptation-lacks-coordination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global collaboration</a> in behavioral science.



Study co-author Kai Ruggeri, professor of health policy and management at <a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health</a>, emphasized the significance of this research in enhancing public understanding.



“Such endeavors are only possible if we bring together researchers from around the world. What is particularly unique about this work is the involvement of students and early-career researchers from the Junior Researcher Programme (JRP) and the Global Behavioral Science (<a href="https://global.undergrad.columbia.edu/program/columbia-summer-research-practicum-global-behavioral-science-globes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GLOBES)</a> program at Columbia University,” said Ruggeri.



This collaborative approach ensures that findings are robust, inclusive, and applicable across diverse populations, providing a more comprehensive understanding of public attitudes toward climate change.

Once upon a time, a destructive “tag-team” of natural forces triggered catastrophic mass marine extinctions that reshaped the course of evolution on Earth, paving the way for new forms of life.



This powerful duo wasn't made up of marauding warriors or mythical monsters but rather the elemental forces of nature we still encounter today: land and sea.



Acting in deadly harmony, these powerful elements transformed marine life, disrupted entire ecosystems, and altered the planet's history forever.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mass-extinction-events-of-marine-species">Mass extinction events of marine species</h2>



In a recent study, researchers led by the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southampton</a> present startling new explanations for these drastic events.



The scientists have shed new light on an age-old enigma: the sequence of traumatic environmental crises known as oceanic anoxic events that occurred between 185 and 85 million years ago.



During these events, the oceans were dangerously low on dissolved oxygen, throwing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine ecosystems</a> into turmoil and leading to mass extinctions of marine species.



"Oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) are transient perturbations to the global carbon cycle, during which large regions of the oceans are depleted in dissolved oxygen," noted the researchers.



"The resulting euxinic (anoxic and sulfidic) waters are highly toxic, leading to biological turnover events and, in extreme cases, mass extinctions of marine biota."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-triggers-for-the-extinction-events">Triggers for the extinction events</h2>



"Oceanic anoxic events were like hitting the reset button on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ecosystems-classified-for-the-first-time-across-the-entire-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet’s ecosystems</a>. The challenge was understanding which geological forces hit the button," said study lead author Professor Tom Gernon.



The study was an international effort, bringing together minds from universities in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.



The researchers set out to investigate how ocean chemistry was altered by the impact of tectonic shifts during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaurs-were-not-the-only-animals-that-grew-fast-during-the-mesozoic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mesozoic era</a>, often known as the age of the dinosaurs.



The Mesozoic era marked the disintegration of Gondwana, a once vast landmass that dinosaurs claimed as their dominion.



"The Mesozoic era witnessed the breakup of this landmass, in turn bringing intense volcanic activity worldwide. As tectonic plates shifted and new seafloors formed, large amounts of phosphorus, a nutrient essential for life, were released from weathering volcanic rocks into the oceans," explained Professor Gernon.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-land-sea-and-mass-marine-extinctions">Land, sea, and mass marine extinctions</h2>



According to Professor Gernon, the team found evidence of multiple pulses of chemical weathering on both the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-seafloor-nutrients-support-the-entire-food-chain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seafloor</a> and continents, which alternately disrupted the oceans. "It’s like a geological tag-team," he added.



The timing of these weathering pulses eerily lined up with most oceanic anoxic events.



The researchers propose that the weathering-triggered influx of phosphorus to the ocean acted like a natural fertilizer, boosting the growth of marine organisms. But this seemingly beneficial fertilization had a disastrous flip side.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-widespread-oxygen-depletion">Widespread oxygen depletion </h2>



The surge in biological activity resulted in large amounts of organic matter sinking to the ocean floor, consuming significant quantities of oxygen in their wake. 



This led to vast regions of the oceans becoming oxygen-depleted or anoxic, effectively becoming "dead zones" where most marine life could not survive.



“The anoxic events typically lasted around one to two million years and had profound impacts on marine ecosystems, the legacy of which even felt today," said study co-author Professor Benjamin Mills.



These events also led to the accumulation of organic matter-rich rocks, which today form the largest source of commercial oil and gas reserves globally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-echoes-in-today-s-oceans">Echoes in today's oceans</h2>



This mass extinction study not only offers answers to historical biological upheaval but also shines a spotlight on the dire effects of nutrient overloading in contemporary marine environments.



There is a haunting parallel with human activities today that have reduced oceanic oxygen levels by about two percent, causing a significant expansion in anoxic water masses.



“Studying geological events offers valuable insights that can help us grasp how the Earth may respond to future climatic and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/some-plants-thrive-under-environmental-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental stresses</a>," said Professor Gernon.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-deadly-symbiosis">A deadly symbiosis</h2>



Ultimately, the research illuminates a potent connection between Earth’s solid interior and its surface environment and biosphere, especially during periods of tectonic and climatic upheaval.



“It’s remarkable how a chain of events within the Earth can impact the surface, often with devastating effects," noted the researchers. "Tearing continents apart can have profound repercussions for the course of evolution."

Antibiotics, the silent superheroes of modern medicine, save lives during surgeries and shield us from fatal infections. However, more bacteria are developing resistance. That's why scientists are exploring new sources, like the Arctic, for fresh antibiotic candidates.



Our regular soil might just be the knight in shining armor, waiting to rescue us. Soil is the birthplace of about 70% of all currently licensed antibiotics, specifically a group of organisms known as actinobacteria. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-habitats-for-actinobacteria">New habitats for actinobacteria</h2>



Our Earth, the charming little blue-green planet we call home, has yet to reveal all her secrets. Many of her nooks and crannies are still unexplored, including a plethora of untapped habitats for actinobacteria. 



And who knows, these little microbes could hold the key to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antimicrobial-resistance-projected-to-kill-10-million-people-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">next generation of antibiotics</a>.



Here's the best part: these fresh antibiotics might not annihilate bacteria, but they could reduce their 'virulence' or disease-causing capability. 



That’s like turning a fearsome dragon into a harmless lizard. With such antivirulence compounds, it's harder for bacteria to fight back. Plus, these promise fewer nasty side effects.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-antibiotic-compound-from-arctic">Antibiotic compound from Arctic</h2>



Now, let's meet the brain behind this revolutionary idea. Dr Päivi Tammela of the <a href="https://www.helsinki.fi/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Helsinki</a>, Finland, and her team have developed advanced screening assays to spot these antivirulence and antibacterial metabolites in actinobacteria extracts.



They discovered a compound from the Arctic Ocean that can inhibit the virulence of E. coli without affecting its growth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-antibiotic-potential-from-arctic">Testing antibiotic potential from Arctic</h2>



The team targeted a strain of E. coli that wreaks havoc on children under five, causing severe diarrhea. This nasty bacterium sticks to cells in the gut and injects destructive 'virulence factors' into the host cell.



The team then sailed off to the Arctic Sea, to an island called 'Svalbard,' aboard the Norwegian research vessel ‘Kronprins Haakon.’ 



They collected invertebrates, isolated actinobacteria from them, and extracted and separated their cells into fractions, testing each one against the menacing E. coli.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-antibiotic-from-arctic-waters">New antibiotic from Arctic waters</h2>



Researchers found two unknown compounds from the strains Rhodococcus and Kocuria which showed strong antivirulence or antibacterial activity.



“Here we show how advanced screening assays can identify antivirulence and antibacterial metabolites from actinobacteria extracts,” said Dr Tammela.



“We discovered a compound that inhibits enteropathogenic&nbsp;E. coli&nbsp;(EPEC) virulence without affecting its growth, and a growth-inhibiting compound, both in actinobacteria from the Arctic Ocean.”



That makes it a promising candidate since E. coli is less likely to evolve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-increases-threat-antimicrobial-resistance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">resistance</a> against this strain. Dr. Tammela and her team found that the active compound was most likely a phospholipid, a fatty molecule crucial for cell metabolism.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-and-future-antibiotic-development">Arctic and future antibiotic development</h2>



The discovery of these novel compounds presents a paradigm shift in the pursuit of new antibiotics. By focusing on antivirulence strategies rather than outright bacterial elimination, researchers can potentially reduce the evolutionary pressure that drives <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antibiotic-resistance-increasing-enterococci-looming-global-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotic resistance</a>. 



This means that we might not only preserve existing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-create-viruses-to-combat-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">antibiotics</a> for longer but also ensure that treatments can evolve alongside ever-adapting bacteria. 



As the tide of resistance continues to rise, such innovative approaches could safeguard our arsenal of medications, granting us additional time to explore further solutions for the looming antibiotic crisis.

The team is now focused on optimizing culture conditions for antibiotic compound production, isolating enough of each compound for further study, and understanding their respective bioactivities, especially those from Arctic sources.

Bumblebees - beloved for their fuzzy bodies and industrious nature - are vital cogs in natural and agricultural processes.

The JMU team found that, despite their robust appearance, bumblebees are delicate creatures that are especially susceptible to changes in temperature.



Thanks to their natural predisposition towards cooler habitats, these tiny pollinators are increasingly feeling the heat, quite literally.



"Bumblebees are important pollinators in natural and agricultural systems. They therefore have a high economic and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/honey-bees-spread-viruses-to-bumblebees-in-the-spring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity value</a>," noted Dr. Sabine Nooten, head of the study. Yet, rising temperatures could spell doom for these intricate creatures.



In a series of experiments, bumblebees found themselves navigating an artificial heatwave, akin to the rising global temperatures we see today. The results? Well, let’s just say it left these buzzing beauties in a bit of a hot mess.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-staggering-consequences">Staggering consequences</h2>



Retaining the ability to detect floral scents is paramount for bumblebees. The fragrances emitted by flowers serve as chemical signposts, detailing their location and the state of the flowers.



The 40-degree Celsius temperature trial, however, disabled this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-bumblebees-navigate-better-than-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">essential sensory capacity</a> in bumblebees.



"We found that the heat significantly impaired the bumblebees' ability to detect floral scents," said Sabine Nooten. 



A staggering 80% decrease in scent detection ability was noted among female worker bees. The male bees fared marginally better, losing half of their olfactory abilities.

Hoping for a recovery post heat-wave exposure? The experiments painted a grim picture. Even a subsequent cool-down period did not restore the bumblebees' olfactory capabilities immediately. A whole day later, most affected specimens still struggled with the loss of smell.



The study highlights the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between plants and insects in the context of climate change. The adverse effects of heatwaves, it seems, extend far beyond human discomfort.



Following these revelations, a new project has been approved. "Now that we have found out that heat waves impair the physiological processes of bumblebees to detect flower scents, our focus is now on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bumblebees-show-surprising-adept-teamwork-skills/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">behavioral side</a>," said Nooten. "We will test how the foraging behavior of bumblebees is affected by experimental heatwaves."

This crucial oceanic system functions like a massive conveyor belt, redistributing warm water from the tropics to the northern latitudes and returning cold water south, effectively balancing global temperatures. As a result, regions like Northern Europe, including the UK, enjoy milder climates compared to other locations at similar latitudes.



By examining extensive ocean data spanning from 1979 to 2021, scientists have gained crucial insights into how these waters mix, interact, and drive one of Earth's most vital climate-regulating mechanisms. 



The findings hold significant implications for our understanding of global warming and future climate predictions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-making-waves-in-ocean-research">Making waves in ocean research</h2>



In an international collaboration, researchers from the <a href="https://www.southampton.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Southampton</a>, the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, the National Oceanography Centre, and <a href="https://www.su.se/cmlink/stockholm-university" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stockholm University</a> analyzed ocean data from 1979 to 2021.



The goal was to comprehend how the intermixing of Atlantic and Arctic waters supports the AMOC.



Regulating our planet's temperature, the AMOC is akin to a colossal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-deja-vu-oceans-may-slow-down-again/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean conveyor belt</a>. It shuttles warm water from the tropics to the north and ferries cold water south, evenly distributing heat globally. 



This mechanism ensures Northern Europe, the UK included, enjoys milder climates than other locations at the same latitude.



"The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a key role in the global climate. The near-surface branch of the AMOC (upper limb) transports heat and salt northwards from the Equator, which helps to offset the atmospheric cooling at mid-latitudes (particularly central Europe, Scandinavia), moderating regional climate," noted the study authors. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-arctic-water-mixing-and-climate">Atlantic-Arctic water mixing and climate</h2>



The researchers established that the lower limb of the AMOC is composed of 72% Atlantic waters and 28% Arctic waters. These waters reside in the deep, cold, dense part of this "conveyor belt," flowing southward in the Atlantic Ocean.



“As warm water reaches the cooler regions of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-warming-triggers-rising-north-atlantic-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Atlantic</a>, it loses heat to the atmosphere, becomes denser, and sinks to great depths," explained study lead author Dr. Dipanjan Dey.



"While some of this dense water immediately returns south, much of it travels northward, where it mixes with colder, fresher Arctic waters in regions like the Denmark Strait. This mixing process makes the water even denser before flowing southward, contributing to the AMOC's strength.”



The experts estimated that the mixing of Atlantic and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-warming-four-times-faster-than-global-average/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic waters</a> is responsible for 33% of the transformation of warm, salty water into colder, fresher, and denser water, while 67% is attributed to interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-circulation-and-climate">Ocean circulation and climate</h2>



The breakthrough study significantly challenges previous assumptions that mainly focused on heat loss in specific areas, overlooking the critical role of Atlantic-Arctic water mixing.



The findings allow us to better understand the complex relationship between climate, ocean circulation, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5-degrees-celsius-would-save-billions-of-lives/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global warming</a>.



Study co-author Professor Robert Marsh noted that the increased stratification of water due to ocean surface warming reduces the crucial mixing between Atlantic and Arctic waters. This weakening can lead to an overall slowdown of the circulation, resulting in climatic ramifications globally.



The repercussions of a weaker, shallower AMOC would be profound. The ripple effects would lead to colder temperatures in Northern Europe, more rapid <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cost-coastal-cities-over-1-trillion-in-damages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level rise</a> along the eastern coast of the United States, and accelerated climate change due to a shortened carbon dioxide retention time in the ocean.

Dr. Dey emphasized the importance of accurately representing these water mixing processes in climate models for better prediction of future climate scenarios.



He further noted the urgency of addressing global warming to avoid potential tipping points, where the circulation could significantly slow down, or even collapse.



The research offers us a fresh perspective - underlining the complex interplay between our climate and global ocean circulation processes, and the vital need to mitigate global warming.

Such drastic and unexpected changes have led to mass melting, glacier break-offs, and weather patterns that have profound impacts on global climate systems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-concerns-about-an-unpredictable-future">Concerns about an unpredictable future</h2>



The real worry among scientists is whether these alarming events signal that Antarctica has reached a critical <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-melting-new-tipping-point-discovered/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tipping point</a> - a stage of accelerated and potentially irreversible sea ice loss.



This concern is compounded by the fact that researchers have only 40 years of detailed weather station and satellite data to analyze, making the predictions uncertain and the future even more unpredictable.



Liz Keller, a paleoclimate specialist from the <a href="https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Victoria University of Wellington</a> in New Zealand, emphasized the gravity of the situation.



"There's uncertainty about whether the current observations indicate a temporary dip or a downward plunge (of sea ice)," said Keller.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-sheet-loss-in-antarctica">Ice sheet loss in Antarctica </h2>



The stakes couldn't be higher, as NASA's estimates suggest that Antarctica's ice sheet contains enough ice to raise global mean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rise-will-cost-coastal-cities-over-1-trillion-in-damages/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level</a> by nearly 58 meters. Given that about a third of the global population resides below 100 vertical meters of sea level, the implications are immense.



Mike Weber, a paleooceanographer from Germany's University of Bonn, presented compelling data gathered from sediment records deep beneath the Antarctic ice.



Dating back 21,000 years, these ancient records reveal evidence of similar periods of accelerated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/this-natural-process-is-making-antarcticas-ice-melt-faster/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice melt</a> in the past. 



Weber emphasized that this pattern of recurring, rapid ice mass loss has been observed at least eight times throughout Earth's history, with each instance triggering a prolonged phase of ice loss lasting several centuries. 



These prolonged episodes of melting have historically resulted in significant and lasting rises in global sea levels, highlighting the potential for a similar impact in the coming decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-need-for-emissions-reductions">Critical need for emissions reductions</h2>



Even with these sobering facts and the growing evidence of accelerated ice loss, scientists maintain that all hope is not lost. There is still a window of opportunity to prevent the worst-case scenarios from becoming reality.



Experts agree that significant reductions in fossil fuel emissions can slow down or even halt the rapid changes occurring in Antarctica. 



By taking decisive action to curb greenhouse gases, humanity can still mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and help stabilize the fragile Antarctic environment.



"If we keep emissions low, we can stop this eventually. If we keep them high, we have a runaway situation and we cannot do anything," said Weber.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emissions-and-historical-climate-patterns">Emissions and historical climate patterns</h2>



Mathieu Casado, a paleoclimate and polar meteorologist at France's Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory, said data from dozens of ice cores has allowed him to reconstruct temperature patterns in Antarctica dating back 800,000 years.



Casado's research showed that the temperature rise of the last 50 years was clearly outside natural variability, highlighting the role of industry in producing carbon emissions that drive climate change.

Antarctica's ice loss may have reached an irreversible tipping point

Scientists from across the globe recently united in southern Chile...

As the world grapples with climate change, wildfires have taken center stage as a significant contributor to heat-trapping carbon emissions. The catastrophic forest fires in Canada in 2023 are a primary example.



These fires, fueled by the warmest and driest conditions in decades, released a staggering 640 million metric tons of carbon, which is comparable to the yearly fossil fuel emissions of a major industrialized nation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-emissions-from-canadian-wildfires">Carbon emissions from Canadian wildfires </h2>



NASA scientists, committed to understanding our ever-changing planet, have investigated this phenomenon. Using satellite observations and advanced computing, they quantified the carbon <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canadian-fires-have-released-a-billion-tons-of-carbon-dioxide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a> from the Canadian wildfires.



These destructive fires destroyed an area almost the size of North Dakota between May and September 2023. To put this in perspective, the fires emitted more carbon in five months than what Russia or Japan released from burning fossil fuels during the entire year of 2022. The quantity was about 480 million and 291 million metric tons, respectively. 



Though the carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from wildfires and fossil fuel combustion induces immediate warming, the scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California emphasize a crucial difference.



As the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-forests-regrow-naturally-on-abandoned-farmlands/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forest regrows</a>, the carbon from the fires will be recaptured by Earth’s ecosystems. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-carbon-emissions-hit-a-record-high-in-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CO2 from burning fossil fuels</a> has no natural offsetting process.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-gases-in-the-atmosphere">Measuring gases in the atmosphere</h2>



The scientists relied on data from the European Space Agency's TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI). This instrument, since 2017, has been circling Earth in the Sentinel 5P satellite.



TROPOMI has the vital job of mapping and measuring trace gases and fine particles in the atmosphere.



The analytical process started with assessing the carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the atmosphere during the <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/intense-fire-season-in-mexico-is-part-of-a-worldwide-trend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fire season</a>. 



By "back-calculating," scientists determined the initial emissions that led to such CO levels. They could then estimate the CO2 released based on the correlation between the two gases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-canadian-wildfire-season">Extreme Canadian wildfire season</h2>



The results of the analysis were astonishing. "What we found was that the fire emissions were bigger than anything in the record for Canada," said study lead author Brendan Byrne.



Despite their severity, wildfires play a key role in the forest ecosystem, clearing undergrowth and making way for new plants. However, factors such as extended drought, past fire management strategies, invasive species, and urban spread into lesser developed areas have increased the number and size of wildfires.



The 2023 fire season in Canada was particularly severe, resulting from extremely dry and warm conditions. 



Temperatures were over 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit above average from May through September in the northwest region, where 61% of fire emissions occurred. The lack of rainfall also exacerbated the situation.



The conditions sparked fires of monstrous sizes, scorching approximately 18 million hectares of forest from British Columbia to Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. This figure is more than eight times the 40-year average and accounted for 5% of Canadian forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-increasing-fire-activity">Increasing fire activity</h2>



"Some climate models project that the temperatures we experienced last year will become the norm by the 2050s,” said Byrne, "The warming, coupled with lack of moisture, is likely to trigger more fire activity in the future."



Canadian forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change as they absorb more CO2 than they release. But, if the 2023 forest fires become a norm, it could significantly impact global climate.



The question remains: Can Canadian forests sustain their carbon absorption rate, or will increased fire activity diminish their capacity to thwart climate warming?

Some species have evolved to thrive in post-fire environments. For instance, many conifers rely on the heat of a fire to release their seeds, ensuring the regeneration of their populations.



Additionally, wildfires help to clear out dead vegetation and underbrush, thereby promoting new growth and biodiversity.



While the immediate impact of a wildfire can be catastrophic, the subsequent recovery and regrowth of the forest can contribute to long-term ecological health. 



Nonetheless, the frequency and intensity of wildfires are escalated by climate change and human activity. The interplay between natural fire regimes and anthropogenic influences poses significant challenges for forestry management and conservation efforts. 



Recognizing the dual nature of wildfires is essential for developing effective strategies that harness their ecological benefits while mitigating their overarching threats to carbon emissions and climate stability.

Canadian wildfires released 640 million metric tons of carbon

Ever been awestruck by the towering heights of skyscrapers? Now, imagine four Burj Khalifas -- the world's tallest building -- one on top of the other. That's what a team of expert oceanographers led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California discovered in the form of an underwater mountain.



Situated 900 miles off the coast of Chile in the Pacific Ocean, a newly mapped underwater mountain, or seamount, has taken the spotlight in recent oceanographic studies. 



This colossal undersea peak stands 1.9 miles high. To put it into context, it's bigger than Mount Olympus in Greece, yet smaller than Japan's Mount Fuji. Essentially, it's quadruple the height of Burj Khalifa in Dubai.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sanctuary-around-the-underwater-mountain">Sanctuary around the underwater mountain</h2>



This marine mountain is part of an underwater range teeming with sponge gardens, ancient corals, rare marine species, and a newly filmed type of squid. 



A diverse ecosystem flourishes in these depths, undeterred and unbeknownst to most of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bizarre-fish-can-walk-and-thrive-on-land/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">land-dwelling</a> species.



The <a href="https://schmidtocean.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Schmidt Ocean Institute</a> embarked on an exciting 28-day adventure aboard the R/V Falkor to uncover the mysteries of an incredible underwater seamount. 



Equipped with a sonar system attached to the ship's hull, the researchers set out to map this underwater wonder.



Jyotika Virmani, the institute's executive director, shared how they use sound waves that travel down to the seabed and bounce back, helping the team understand the fascinating topography below. It’s a remarkable blend of technology and exploration.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-securing-the-underwater-world">Securing the underwater world</h2>



According to Virmani, only about 26% of the seafloor has been mapped to this level of detail so far, even though the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-life-100-new-sea-creatures-found-in-chile/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean floor</a> covers 71% of our planet's surface. 



The fact that this area hosts a wide variety of species and habitats further highlights the importance of such research. 



Moreover, the region is considered ripe for nomination as the world's first high seas marine protected area under a UN treaty, pending ratification in 2023.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-underwater-mountain-species">Underwater mountain species</h2>



The team didn't return from their expedition empty-handed - far from it. 



They documented a <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/underwater-mountain-discovered_two-miles-high_caspar-octopus_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ghostly white Casper octopus</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/underwater-mountain-discovered_two-miles-high_flying-spaghetti-monster_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">two rare Bathyphysa siphonophores</a> -- colloquially known as flying spaghetti monsters due to their stringy shape. 



“The (Casper) octopus has never been captured, so it doesn’t actually have a scientific name yet,” Virmani said.

Moreover, the researchers managed to capture footage of a live Promachoteuthis squid, seen alive only a handful of times before.



“Across the three expeditions, we managed to map and explore 25 seamounts, which is quite a number to explore,” Virmani said. 



“I think we’ve got some good data as a community that could be put forward to make the case that this is a really interesting region for protection."

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Scientists have determined that 2022 was the 5th warmest year since 1880. Furthermore, the last nine consecutive years have been the warmest on record.



From devastating floods and wildfires to natural disasters like Hurricane Ian, 2022 showed us yet again how a warming climate affects people across the globe.&nbsp;



"As we look back at 20:22 and years past, we see that each year we better understand the challenges we face and how important it is to meet them," says NASA.

During 2020, average global temperatures matched the hottest year on record. The hurricane season was also record-breaking, with many of the storms intensifying at extraordinary speeds. According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
