Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.

Smoke is usually associated with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfires-threaten-the-recovery-of-the-ozone-layer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">destructive, relentless power</a> of wildfires. But scientists at Oregon State University have stumbled upon an unexpected boon for forests from this ominous byproduct. It turns out, wildfire smoke has a cooling capacity that gives a leg up to vulnerable seedlings battling harsh climatic conditions.



The study was led by Amanda Brackett, a faculty research assistant at the <a href="https://www.forestry.oregonstate.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">OSU College of Forestry</a>. The major aim of this investigation was to understand how heat waves and future climate conditions might influence canopy cover’s effect on temperature.



To examine the temperature-induced stress on conifer seedlings under different canopy conditions, the team analyzed data from laboratory studies focused on the heat stress responses of seedlings.



"Tree regeneration is an indicator of forest resilience and an important ecological process, but young seedlings are extra vulnerable to heat stress," said Brackett.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-navigating-temperature-stress">Navigating temperature stress</h2>



The research team, including Chris Still and Klaus Puettman, analyzed stress degree hours - a metric that calculates the duration and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-wildfires-have-doubled-in-the-last-20-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intensity of high temperatures</a> that can impair tree regeneration. 



“This work shows that widespread smoke from wildfires can lead to unanticipated beneficial effects by reducing sunlight at the surface and thus lowering the temperatures experienced by vulnerable tree seedlings, even during extreme summer weather like the 2021 heat dome period,” said Professor Still.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-smoke-and-forest-regeneration">Wildfire smoke and forest regeneration </h2>



In the summer of 2021, the scientists examined 11 different stands of recently thinned, 50-year-old Douglas-fir in the Upper Blue River Watershed in western Oregon’s Willamette National Forest. 



Unfortunately, this area was heavily affected by wildfire smoke due to the Middle Fork Complex and Washington Ponds fires.



What did they find? Every 10% increase in canopy cover resulted in maximum temperatures lowering by 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.34 degrees Fahrenheit) at 2 centimeters (0.79 inches) above ground level.



The odds of temperatures surpassing the stress thresholds for conifer regeneration dropped by a quarter, and total stress degree hours reduced by 40 percent.



"Those reductions are large enough to be worthy of attention when managing for tree regeneration," said Brackett.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-smoke-effect">The smoke effect</h2>



The impact of smoke on maximum and average near-surface temperature equated to a temperature reduction triggered by a 15 percent increase in canopy cover. This was an illuminating discovery, drawing attention to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildfire-smoke-creates-conditions-that-favor-more-fires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecological benefits of natural wildfires</a>, despite their notorious reputation.



"Smoke absorbs and scatters incoming solar radiation, reducing how much reaches the forest floor, but we did not anticipate seeing this level of impact," said Brackett. 



The additional cooling effect could play a crucial role during extreme heat events when the protection offered by canopy cover and topography may not be sufficient to safeguard against lethal temperatures in the understory.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-and-limitations">Challenges and limitations</h2>



Despite the promising results, the study also acknowledges certain limitations. The variability in smoke density and the duration of its presence can greatly influence the degree of cooling. 



Furthermore, smoke itself poses health risks to wildlife and humans, indicating that while there are benefits, they come with substantial trade-offs. The study also focused on a specific geographic area and forest type, meaning the results may not be universally applicable. 



Future research could aim to explore these dynamics across different ecosystems and smoke conditions to build a broader understanding.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-research-directions">Future research directions</h2>



Looking ahead, the research team expresses a keen interest in delving deeper into the multifaceted role of wildfire smoke in forest ecology. 



One of the proposed avenues involves examining the long-term effects of repeated smoke exposure on various plant species. Additionally, expanding the scope to incorporate other regions and forest types will provide a more comprehensive picture of how these phenomena interact under diverse climatic conditions. 



Ultimately, this body of work underscores the necessity of integrating interdisciplinary approaches in forest management and climate resilience planning.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-management-of-forests-and-wildfire-smoke">Future management of forests and wildfire smoke</h2>



The regeneration of trees is crucial for establishing the diverse structure found in healthy, multi-aged forests. This study emphasizes the importance of considering the circumstances endured by young saplings when designing and executing forest treatments.



"Given climate predictions, scientists and managers have to look for opportunities to increase individual tree and forest-level resilience to a hotter and more extreme climate," said Brackett.



"Wildfire smoke will continue to affect ecosystems and while we documented an unanticipated benefit, more work is needed to untangle other potential impacts."

The study shows high stress levels in people living 1.25 miles from development sites. This highlights the need for strict residential safety measures.

A recent study has identified significant impacts of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-worlds-largest-coral-bleaching-event-is-now-underway/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">coral bleaching</a> events in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). 



The Great Barrier Reef, spanning nearly 350,000 square kilometers along Australia's northeast coast, is the largest coral ecosystem globally.&nbsp;



The GBR contributes approximately $6.4 billion annually to the Australian economy, but faces severe threats from rising ocean temperatures due to climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-study">Focus of the study</h2>



“Local meteorology over the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) can significantly influence ocean temperatures, which in turn impacts coral ecosystems. While El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) provides insight into the expected synoptic states, it lacks details of anticipated sub-seasonal weather variability at local scales,” wrote the researchers.



“This study explores the influence of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) on Australian tropical climate, both independently and in combination with ENSO, focusing on GBR impacts.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bleaching-on-the-great-barrier-reef">Bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef </h2>



Corals in the Great Barrier Reef are particularly sensitive to weather conditions. Sunny, calm weather usually raises <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-were-a-driving-force-behind-2023s-record-heat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean temperatures</a>, heightening the risk of coral bleaching, while stormy, rainy weather can cool the ocean, offering some protection to corals. 



Calm, sunny days allow more sunlight to penetrate the water, heating the surface, whereas storms and rain increase cloud cover and wind, promoting the mixing of cooler, deeper waters with warmer surface waters.



“Bleaching is likely when tropical corals are exposed to ocean temperatures above a threshold for a prolonged period,” noted the researchers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-recurring-climate-patterns-on-the-great-barrier-reef">Recurring climate patterns on the Great Barrier Reef </h2>



The study found that ENSO, a recurring climate pattern involving temperature changes in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, influences weather patterns over the Great Barrier Reef on a seasonal scale.&nbsp;



Meanwhile, the MJO, a major fluctuation in tropical weather on weekly to monthly timescales, can alter these patterns on shorter, sub-seasonal timescales. This results in unexpected impacts on ocean temperatures and corals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compounding-impacts-of-multiple-drivers-nbsp">Compounding impacts of multiple drivers&nbsp;</h2>



“We find that the MJO can significantly influence the weather variability over the GBR, altering the expected states of El Niño and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/australian-bushfires-triggered-rare-multi-year-la-nina/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">La Niña</a> periods,” said lead author Catherine Gregory, a doctoral candidate at the <a href="https://www.imas.utas.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies</a>.



“While these findings do not tell us all the possible causes of extreme warming and coral bleaching in the GBR, they emphasize the need to consider drivers beyond ENSO, including the compounding impacts of multiple drivers.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-anticipating-coral-bleaching-events-nbsp">Anticipating coral bleaching events&nbsp;</h2>



Understanding how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forecasters-warn-of-weather-chaos-as-el-nino-arrives-early/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ENSO</a> and MJO influence weather patterns can help anticipate coral bleaching events. 



ENSO phases, such as El Niño and La Niña, impact weather and ocean temperatures, with El Niño often leading to higher ocean temperatures and increased coral bleaching risk, while La Niña can bring cooler conditions.&nbsp;



However, the MJO can disrupt these patterns, leading to unexpected weather variations that also affect ocean temperatures and coral health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bleaching-on-the-great-barrier-reef-nbsp">Bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef&nbsp;</h2>



“I'd often heard in the media that during El Niño periods the GBR is more likely to experience bleaching. Then during 2022, the reef experienced mass bleaching during a La Niña period, and it was reported that La Niña should mean cooling in the GBR,” Gregory said.



“However, in my research, I had examined this relationship and not found a strong connection between the ENSO index and ocean temperatures in this region. This motivated me to understand other drivers that could be influential.”



“The MJO, as the leading driver of sub-seasonal weather variability, seemed like an important one to consider. While ENSO provides insight into the expected synoptic states, it lacks details of anticipated sub-seasonal weather variability at local scales.”



These findings underscore the need for comprehensive forecasting models that include both ENSO and MJO impacts to better predict and manage coral bleaching events.



As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-study-provides-answers-to-how-coral-reefs-can-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> continues to pose the greatest threat to corals, understanding these climatic drivers and their interactions is crucial. Every now and then, Mother Nature hands us a surprise, often wrapped up in a mystery. Recently, a group of scientists set out to understand the retreat of high mountain glaciers and the increase in greenhouse gas levels.



Guiding this remarkable research is Du Zhiheng, who hails from the prestigious <a href="http://english.nieer.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources</a> of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.



Alongside collaborators from <a href="https://english.bnu.edu.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Beijing Normal University</a> and <a href="https://en.lzu.edu.cn" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lanzhou University</a>, Zhiheng led numerous expeditions to ice caves on a high-mountain glacier in China from 2021 to 2023. The research offers a new perspective, shedding light on the unseen yet <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/retreating-glaciers-unleash-a-world-of-ecological-potential/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">far-reaching impacts</a> of glacier melting.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glaciers-release-greenhouse-gases">Glaciers release greenhouse gases</h2>



High mountain glaciers have been <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-glaciers-unleash-invasive-species-into-unexpected-areas/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">retreating</a> at an accelerated pace since the 1980s, leading to heightened glacier runoff. 



However, it's less clear if this process fuels or releases greenhouse gases, or if areas exposed to such retreat become absorbers or emitters of these gases.



This knowledge gap fueled Zhiheng and his team’s curiosity. They monitored changes in methane and carbon dioxide concentration and their isotope data in ice caves on high-mountain glaciers. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unexpected-revelation">Unexpected revelation</h2>



Here's a surprising fact: the methane emission and carbon dioxide absorption levels in ice caves and meltwater are changing. The team found increased methane levels (up to 5.7 ppm) and decreased carbon dioxide levels (down to 168 ppm) in the ice cave.



This shift in gas levels could significantly impact future glacier carbon budgets. Even more so, it was observed that during the strong ablation season (July 13-16, 2023), methane concentrations spiked. 



A key point to note, though, is that these levels remain relatively low compared to data from Greenland glaciers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-production">Methane production</h2>



The plot thickened when the researchers examined in-situ carbon isotope data (δ13C-CH4 and δ13C-CO2). 



The data revealed that methane production appears to be mainly due to acetoclastic methanogenesis. However, the possibility of thermogenic methane production couldn't be completely ruled out.



Adding another layer of complexity, meteorological factors such as wind speed, wind direction, and meltwater runoff appeared to influence methane emissions.

The research showed a unique flux pattern for methane and carbon dioxide variations between the glacial outlet cavity and the subglacial environment. This leads to their release into the atmosphere, further accelerating glacier melting.



Staggering data reveals that over the past half century, 17.2% (5,956 out of 34,578) of small glaciers covering an area of 1,127.2 km2 have vanished in China. The disappearance of these icy titans is not only reshaping our landscapes but also our atmosphere.

While the ozone layer has been successfully healing over the past decades - thanks to international environmental policies like the Montreal Protocol - it is now facing a complex and yet unforeseen challenge.



New research has uncovered a paradoxical impact of large <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/discovery-massive-amounts-of-methane-gas-spews-from-wildfires/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wildfires</a> on this protective layer of the atmosphere, throwing a fresh spotlight on the complex interaction between natural events and atmospheric dynamics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-smoke-charged-vortex">The smoke-charged vortex</h2>



In an attempt to understand the impact of wildfires on the ozone layer, the researchers turned their attention to the smoke-charged vortex (SCV). This powerful, smoke-laden whirlpool, formed as a result of wildfires, pulls smoke into the middle <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/space-travel-has-left-a-metal-mark-on-earths-stratosphere/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stratosphere</a>, reaching altitudes up to 35 kilometers.



This phenomenon was observed during the 2019/20 Australian wildfires, which resulted in a staggering increase in stratospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/aerosols-have-an-underestimated-effect-on-clouds-and-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">aerosols</a>.



"By combining satellite observations with numerical model calculations, we investigated the transport process of the 2019-2020 Australian mega-bushfire to the stratosphere and its impact on aerosol burden and chemistry in the middle stratosphere, focusing on the role of SCVs that have been largely overlooked in the past," wrote the researchers.



Study co-author Hang Su, a professor in the <a href="http://www.iap.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Atmospheric Physics</a> at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, described the impacts of the smoke-charged vortex.



"This process led to at least a doubling of the aerosol burden in the southern hemisphere’s middle stratosphere. Once reaching such high altitudes, these aerosols initiated a series of chemical reactions at their surface that impacted ozone concentrations," noted Professor Su.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildfire-induced-aerosols-and-the-ozone-layer">Wildfire-induced aerosols and the ozone layer</h2>



These wildfire-induced aerosols seem to be a double-edged sword when it comes to the ozone layer. While they hastened <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-depletion-in-the-arctic-leads-to-weather-anomalies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ozone depletion</a> in the lower stratosphere, they also contributed to an increase in ozone in the middle stratosphere.



Professor Yafang Cheng, a study co-author from the <a href="https://www.mpic.de/2285/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Max Planck Institute for Chemistry</a>, elaborated on the implications of this phenomenon.



"Our study uncovers a mechanism by which absorbing aerosols in wildfire smoke, such as black carbon, can induce and sustain enormous smoke-charged vortices spanning thousands of kilometers, fundamentally changing the stratospheric circulation," said Professor Chang.

Study first author Dr. Chaoqun Ma, a postdoc researcher in Cheng’s team at the MPIC, expressed his fascination with the interconnectedness of the Earth's systems.

"Smoke from a forest fire can significantly change the wind and circulation tens of kilometers above the ground, which allows the smoke to modify the ozone layer, influencing life on our planet.”

Whale strandings are a common occurrence along the East Australian Coastline. Yet, what's often overlooked is the question of what to do with the whale remains, a topic that's now sparking considerable debate and scientific interest.



Cue the entrance of Griffith University's <a href="https://whalesandclimate.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whales and Climate Research Program</a>. Led by Dr. Olaf Meynecke, the program is pioneering an innovative new approach to this conundrum.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-respectful-disposal-of-whale-remains">Respectful disposal of whale remains</h2>



Dr. Meynecke is known for his tireless efforts in marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humpback-whales-felt-less-stressed-during-the-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">conservation</a>. He is now on an unusual mission - the sustainable and respectful disposal of whale remains.



"As we’ve seen more and more whales stranding on beaches in past years, the effective, safe and culturally sensitive removal of whale remains near or on public beaches has become a major issue,” he said. 



“Our study shows that forecasting of where whale remains might end up when floating at sea is possible with surprisingly high accuracy.”&nbsp;



He also tells the story of a 14m female humpback whale, found floating lifeless off Queensland's Noosa Heads in July 2023, possibly to due to ship strike.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-odyssey-of-a-corpse">Odyssey of a corpse</h2>



The humpback's remains were intercepted before they washed ashore. Then began their journey as the carcass was repositioned 30km offshore. 



Equipped with a satellite tag, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrinking-north-atlantic-right-whales-have-fewer-offspring/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">whale's voyage</a> was tracked as it drifted in the wind and ocean currents for six days before settling on the seabed.



Death is a natural part of life, and in the words of Dr. Meynecke, this unfortunate event opened the door to a scientific first. 



The humpback's passing allowed researchers to test and establish a prediction method for whale drift trajectory.



Not only did this provide valuable data, but it also meant the whale's nutrients could remain in the marine ecosystem while aiding authorities in their decision-making process.



Here's a startling fact, Australia's go-to method of dealing with washed-up whale remains has been landfill. 



There are seven known methods of whale removal like composting, natural decomposition on the beach, sinking the remains, and even using explosives. Each, however, comes with its own set of challenges, from public health risks to logistical nightmares.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nature-s-way-is-a-win-win-scenario">Nature's way is a win-win scenario</h2>



Enter offshore towing. It's a method that's been used here and internationally, but with mixed success. 



Drawbacks include remains washing back to shores or obstructing shipping lanes. But Dr. Meynecke's research might just change that.



Dr. Meynecke's findings serve as an initial tool to predict where the whale remains would drift. This could retain the decomposition nutrients within the marine ecosystem -- a huge win for marine life. Scavengers like tiger sharks often play a role in breaking down the remains.



“Perished whales provide a substantial nutrient source for marine ecosystems, and strategically placing whale remains offshore can enhance nutrient cycling and foster biodiversity, contribute to carbon removal and marine floor enrichment for up to seven years,” Dr. Meynecke said. 



“Their gradual decomposition sustains scavengers and detritivores, and support microbial communities and deep-sea organisms.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-handling-whale-remains">Handling whale remains</h2>



“The best strategy for handling whale remains depends on multiple factors and should be decided on a case-by-case basis. Offshore disposal can be an ethical, cost-effective, and safe option if managed appropriately," noted Dr. Meynecke.  



“By integrating scientific research and practical management strategies presented in our study, we can enhance our ability to predict and effectively manage the drift of whale remains, ensuring that ecological benefits are maximized while minimizing adverse impacts.” 



While each case should be decided individually, offshore disposal emerges as an ethical, cost-effective, and safe option if managed properly.

Just as you enjoy a picnic by the calming view of a lake, it's disheartening to know that those serene waters are in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-of-the-worlds-largest-lakes-are-losing-their-resilience/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">grave danger</a>. Lakes worldwide are facing an unsettling trend of warming – their temperatures are skyrocketing at an unprecedented rate.



The scientific details behind this concern are meticulously drawn out in a recent study. This research is the work of a collaborative team of limnologists and climate modelers from various backgrounds.



The lead scientist, Dr. Lei Huang, garnered his postdoctoral research experience from the<a href="https://ibsclimate.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> IBS Center for Climate Physics</a> in Busan, South Korea, and now resides at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-behind-the-lake-warming">Behind the lake warming</h2>



The team's findings are indeed sobering. If the current rate of anthropogenic warming - warming caused by human activities - continues until 2100, the surface and subsurface waters of our beloved lakes are set to heat up at a rate they've never encountered before.



Imagine, the conditions that sustained rich biodiversity and important ecological services of lakes could be history soon.



The team made this prediction using a state-of-the-art climate computer model known as the Community Earth System Model (version 2), covering the period from 1850-2100 CE.



This model is a novelty in its field, as it seamlessly integrates the dynamics of lake systems with the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hundred-paths-into-the-future">Hundred paths into the future</h2>



Ever wondered how scientists predict future <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lake-tsunamis-are-an-emerging-climate-linked-hazard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a>? Here's an example - rather than running the computer model into the future only once, the scientists used an ensemble of 100 past-to-future simulations. 



These simulations ran on "Aleph," one of South Korea's fastest computers at the <a href="https://www.ibs.re.kr/eng.do" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute for Basic Science</a>, producing slightly different versions of natural climate variability while also factoring in the warming effects of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations.



With this manifold approach, the scientists could separate the naturally occurring lake temperature variations from those caused by human actions. The team was able to predict when lake temperatures would permanently cross natural bounds – a situation they refer to as "no-analog" conditions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-delving-deeper">Delving deeper</h2>



While surface warming affects creatures in the shallower parts, some organisms can relocate vertically to cooler depth layers. Therefore, it's not just the surface, but how the warming seeps into the subsurface layers needs considerable attention as well.



Dr. Iestyn Woolway, a NERC Independent Research Fellow at <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bangor University</a>, UK, and a corresponding author of the study, highlights this crucial aspect.



According to Dr. Woolway, the subsurface layers of tropical lakes, which house rich biodiversity, will be the first to face these unprecedented conditions when global warming reaches about 2.4°C (36.32°F) above pre-industrial conditions.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-steps-to-reduce-lake-warming">Steps to reduce lake warming</h2>



Tackling lake warming requires both individual and collective action. Here are some steps to mitigate this issue:

"In contrast, high-latitude lakes partly shield subsurface layers from surface&nbsp;warming&nbsp;through stratification, delaying or sometimes even preventing no-analog climates at depths."



These no-analog lake climates won't just stop at warming the lakes; they can trigger severe disruptions in ecosystems, warned Professor Axel Timmermann, a co-author of the study, and Director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics.



Lake organisms, compared to their terrestrial and marine counterparts, often find it hard to migrate to more optimal climates. Hence, understanding the timing of the emergence of no-analog conditions is vital for adaptation, planning, and climate mitigation in lake ecosystems.



As you now gaze at the gentle ripples of the lake, it's clear that our lakes are not simply bodies of water, but an integral part of our ecosystems – an area we can't afford to ignore. So, isn't it time we took some serious steps to prevent such a catastrophic future?

Discovery of new evidence regarding the behavior of the Gulf Stream during the last Ice Age could mean that it is more sensitive to future climate change than we previously thought.&nbsp;



The study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41586-024-07655-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a> and led by researchers at <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University College London </a>(UCL), found that around 20,000 years ago an extraordinarily strong Gulf Stream was related to more intense winds over the subtropical North Atlantic. 



This finding suggests that a slowdown of such winds, as some studies have speculated could occur with ongoing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-records-shatter-2024-set-to-be-hottest-year-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a>, would in fact take power away from the Gulf Stream and carry potential consequences for heat distribution, sea level.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gulf-stream-sensitivity-to-changing-wind-patterns">Gulf Stream sensitivity to changing wind patterns</h2>



A surface oceanic current known as the Gulf Stream was responsible for carrying warm tropical water from the US east coast to Europe, releasing heat in the atmosphere and causing the European continent to warm up.&nbsp;



The Earth, even with a record high Gulf Stream during the last ice age, was still substantially colder than it is today due to large northern hemisphere ice sheets.



“We found that during the last ice age, the Gulf Stream was much stronger because of stronger winds across the subtropical North Atlantic. As a result, the Gulf Stream was still moving lots of heat northwards, despite the rest of the planet being far colder,” explained lead author Jack Wharton, a professor in UCL’s department of geography.



“Our work also highlights the Gulf Stream’s potential sensitivity to future changes in wind patterns.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disrupting-deep-water-formation-nbsp">Disrupting deep water formation&nbsp;</h2>



The Gulf Stream is part of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-could-collapse-the-atlantic-circulation-system/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AMOC</a>), which is influenced by deep water formation and winds. 



Climate change could weaken the AMOC by disrupting deep water formation, primarily due to melting glacial water from Greenland, and reducing wind strength.&nbsp;



If the AMOC collapses, European temperatures could drop by 10 to 15 degrees Celsius, severely impacting agriculture and weather patterns. The wind-driven decrease in the Gulf Stream would exacerbate this cooling effect.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-currents-move-heat-around-the-planet">Ocean currents move heat around the planet</h2>



“It’s not always recognized how much ocean currents are responsible for transferring heat around the planet and shaping our climate,” said co-author Mark Maslin, a professor in the same department.&nbsp;



“Paradoxically, the warming of the climate could cool down much of Europe by disrupting the AMOC. Our new research adds to this understanding, and shows that the weakening of the winds which drive the Gulf Stream could reduce the circulation of heat, further affecting the continent.”



The study challenges the simplified “conveyor belt” metaphor of the AMOC, suggesting a more complex system of interconnected loops, with each part reacting uniquely to climate change.&nbsp;



“Rather than the established conveyor belt metaphor, perhaps it is better to think of the AMOC as a series of interconnected loops. There is the subtropical loop - that the Gulf Stream is part of - and a subpolar loop, which carries heat further northwards into the Arctic,” explained senior author David Thornalley, an ocean and climate scientist at UCL.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-past-strength-of-the-gulf-stream-nbsp">Past strength of the Gulf Stream&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers analyzed fossil remains of foraminifera from sediment cores off North Carolina and Florida to gauge the prehistoric Gulf Stream's strength.&nbsp;



The findings indicated that during the last ice age, the Gulf Stream was twice as deep and fast as it is today. This historical perspective helps understand potential future changes in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-ocean-currents-slowing-as-water-temperature-rises/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">oceanic currents</a> and their global climate impacts.

Climate change will impact the Gulf Stream more than we thought

A team of researchers led by the <a href="https://www.reading.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Reading</a> has recently conducted a meta-analysis of 120 scientific papers, examining the responses of 40 insect types to pollutants like ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter across 19 countries.&nbsp;



The investigation revealed that bees and other beneficial insects are more adversely affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/air-pollution-will-increase-dramatically-in-a-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air pollution</a> compared to the impacts of crop-destroying pests such as aphids.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



“Many of the essential ecosystem services that nature provides, including nutrient cycling, pest control, pollination, and the maintenance of soil structure and fertility, are reliant on the actions of invertebrate species,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;



“However, globally, invertebrate populations are fundamentally threatened by a range of human activities including land use change, the introduction of alien invasive species, and air pollution.”



The experts noted that common air pollutants produced by human activities can cause significant reductions in invertebrate fitness.&nbsp;



“Air pollutants can have direct impacts by inducing changes at physiological and molecular levels,” explained the researchers.



“They can also have indirect impacts by inducing changes to the nutritional status of host plants, or by disrupting odor-mediated navigation and communication through chemical reactions that modify odor cues and signaling compounds (volatile organic compounds.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impacts-of-elevated-air-pollution">Impacts of elevated air pollution</h2>



According to the experts, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/pollinators-face-extinction-risk-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollinators</a> such as bees, moths, and butterflies, experienced a 39% decline in foraging efficiency due to elevated air pollution levels, whereas pests like aphids were not significantly affected.



“Air pollution is an underappreciated threat to the insects that make our lives easier,” said study lead author James Ryalls, a research fellow in ecology at Reading.&nbsp;



“The bees that pollinate our flowers and the wasps that provide natural pest control are at risk of further decline if air pollution levels are not addressed.”&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loss-of-beneficial-insects-nbsp">Loss of beneficial insects&nbsp;</h2>



Since beneficial insects play a major role in pollination and natural pest control, this phenomenon could exacerbate crop damage, reduce yields, and impact food security worldwide.



The study suggests that beneficial insects are more susceptible to air pollution because of their reliance on scent-based communication. Pollutants can chemically alter these scent trails or hinder insects' ability to detect them, disrupting their sensory navigation.&nbsp;



In contrast, pests often rely on direct contact or visual cues, making them less vulnerable to the impacts of polluted air.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pollutants-disrupt-insect-behavior-nbsp">Pollutants disrupt insect behavior&nbsp;</h2>



Key aspects of insect behavior and biology affected by air pollution include feeding, growth, survival, reproduction, and the ability to locate food sources.&nbsp;



Among these, the ability to find food was the most severely impaired, with a decline of about one-third on average.&nbsp;



Ozone was found to be particularly harmful, reducing beneficial insects' ability to thrive by 35%, even at levels below current air quality standards. Nitrogen oxides also significantly impaired beneficial insects.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-quality-regulations-to-protect-beneficial-insects-nbsp">Air quality regulations to protect beneficial insects&nbsp;</h2>



The findings highlight the urgent need for stricter air quality regulations to protect beneficial insects and, consequently, food security. 



“We are facing a ‘lose-lose’ scenario where air pollution harms helpful insects without affecting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urgent-need-to-protect-earths-forests-from-non-native-pests/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pests</a>, potentially leading to greater crop damage, reduced yields, and less food on supermarket shelves,” Ryalls cautioned.&nbsp;



“Our findings indicate that air pollutants disproportionately impair the performance of beneficial invertebrates. These negative impacts appear to stem from the disruption of VOC-mediated food or host location by these species,” noted the study authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;



“The impacts of air pollution do not appear to vary with pollutant concentration; even moderate levels of ozone and nitrous oxides adversely affect beneficial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-noise-can-be-fatal-to-marine-invertebrates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">invertebrates</a>, which indicates that the threats posed by air pollution are likely to remain or worsen without particularly severe and draconian changes to policy.”



“As such, our results demonstrate that air pollution needs to be carefully considered alongside other threats in management plans and policies aiming to safeguard these beneficial invertebrates.”

Beneficial insects are severely impacted by air pollution

However, a new study published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1029/2023EF004399" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth’s Future</a> casts doubt on the effectiveness of Western US forests in mitigating climate change. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-focus-of-the-research-nbsp">Focus of the research&nbsp;</h2>



“Forests are a large carbon sink and could serve as natural climate solutions that help moderate future warming. Thus, establishing forest carbon baselines is essential for tracking climate-mitigation targets,” wrote the researchers.



“Western US forests are natural climate solution hotspots but are profoundly threatened by drought and altered disturbance regimes. How these factors shape spatial patterns of carbon storage and carbon change over time is poorly resolved.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-ability-of-western-forests-nbsp">Carbon storage ability of Western forests&nbsp;</h2>



Led by Jazlynn Hall from the <a href="https://www.caryinstitute.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies</a>, the research analyzed forest carbon storage trends in the American West from 2005 to 2019. The experts found that climate change and fires are causing forests to store less <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-sinks-are-a-powerful-weapon-against-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon</a>.



“There’s a lot of momentum to use forests as natural climate solutions,” said Hall. “Many climate mitigation pathways rely in part on additional forest carbon storage to keep warming below 1.5 degrees C this century.”&nbsp;



“We wanted to provide a baseline for how much carbon is currently stored in Western forests, how it’s changing, and how disturbances like fire and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/megadrought-in-the-western-u-s-is-the-worst-in-at-least-1200-years/">drought</a> pose a threat to climate mitigation targets.”



Hall and her team used survey data from the <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">US Forest Service</a> to estimate carbon storage in 19 ecoregions, spanning diverse climates and ecological zones. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-trends-nbsp">Carbon storage trends&nbsp;</h2>



The researchers discovered that carbon stored in living trees decreased while carbon in dead trees increased, with climate and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/record-breaking-wildfire-years-are-just-getting-started/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fires</a> being the primary drivers of these trends. 



“These challenges have the potential to compromise carbon storage capacity and undermine our ability to mitigate climate change,” Hall cautioned.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-influencing-forest-carbon-storage-nbsp">Factors influencing forest carbon storage&nbsp;</h2>



The study used machine learning to identify the main factors affecting carbon storage, finding that climate and fire were the most significant influences.&nbsp;



Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at <a href="https://www.ucla.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCLA</a> and co-author of the study, emphasized the utility of these methods for monitoring future carbon storage and assessing the impacts of forest management efforts.



The research revealed that many Western forests might face accelerated carbon loss, particularly due to fire suppression practices that have made forests denser and more prone to severe fires.&nbsp;



“Dry forests in the Western US may be acutely vulnerable to carbon loss without strong and immediate investment in proactive forest management [such as thinning and prescribed burning],” the scientists wrote.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-glimmer-of-hope">A glimmer of hope</h2>



Notably, the Pacific Northwest was an exception, showing an increase in carbon storage, likely due to efforts to reduce old-growth forest harvesting and expand protected areas.&nbsp;



“It offers a glimmer of hope that we can change things, especially in human-dominated areas,” Hall explained.



Despite the initial optimism, the team acknowledges that Western US forests might not be reliable for increasing carbon storage, especially following the severe wildfires of 2020 and 2021.&nbsp;



Senior author Winslow Hansen from the Cary Institute suggests that enhancing the stability of carbon through mechanical thinning and prescribed burning might be feasible, albeit at a lower carbon carrying capacity.

“The study highlights the vulnerability of western US forests to climate-related and human threats to carbon, providing crucial insights for effective climate change mitigation strategies,” wrote the study authors.&nbsp;

Hansen is currently leading the <a href="https://www.caryinstitute.org/science/research-projects/western-fire-forest-resilience-collaborative" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Western Fire and Forest Resilience Collaborative</a>, a research initiative aimed at developing sustainable fire management practices. 



The study's baseline data will be crucial for tracking forest carbon changes and informing management strategies tailored to local conditions.&nbsp;



“This information could serve as the foundation for forest management strategies to maximize carbon storage where we can,” said Hansen, “and to avoid catastrophic emissions of carbon elsewhere.”



Thus, while Western US forests face significant challenges in contributing to climate change mitigation, strategic management and targeted approaches could enhance their resilience and carbon storage capabilities.

Standard artificial turf can heat up to a scorching 70°C (158°F) under the sun, posing significant risks such as burns, heat-related illnesses, and even life-threatening conditions like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/feeling-the-heat-rising-temperatures-push-the-limits-of-the-human-body/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">heat stroke</a>. However, this innovative solution changes the game entirely.



By harnessing the natural cooling power of evaporation, it transforms artificial turf from a potential hazard into a safe and comfortable playing surface, even on the hottest days. 



This advancement not only improves the safety and usability of urban sports fields but also contributes positively to the urban <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forest-microclimates-impact-bird-species-diversity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microclimate</a>, making cities more livable and sustainable.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turning-down-the-heat-with-artificial-turf">Turning down the heat with artificial turf</h2>



Research conducted in Amsterdam demonstrated the efficacy of this novel concept. 



By replacing conventional turf with the self-cooling variant, temperatures markedly decreased. 



The team's research revealed that on a sweltering day in June 2020, the modified turf hit a surface temperature of 37°C (98.6°F) - a mere 1.7°C (3.1°F) above natural grass. 



In contrast, temperatures of the standard artificial turf skyrocketed to 62.5°C (144.5°F).



Substantial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cloud-engineering-can-temporarily-cool-our-planet/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature differences</a> were also observed above the turf.



“We found lower air temperatures 75cm above the cooled plots compared to conventional artificial turf fields, especially during the night,” notes van Huijgevoort. 



This discovery implies the cooled plots might facilitate reducing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humidity-increases-urban-heat-stress/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urban heat</a> island effect.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-of-both-worlds">Best of both worlds</h2>



This artificial turf, with its natural self-cooling capability, offers a combination of benefits. It's sturdy, maintains optimal temperatures, and promotes a safe sports environment. 



Another advantage is its impressive rainwater storage capability, nearly on par with natural grass. This storage capacity mitigates urban flooding by reducing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stormwater-drainage-system-helps-keep-street-trees-hydrated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stormwater drainage</a>. The system can also be manually watered during dry periods, making it a versatile solution.



Although installation costs might initially be double that of a conventional artificial turf, the researchers believe that a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis could truly reveal the value of this investment.



More research is needed to understand the wider impacts of this cooling turf on surrounding spaces and on cities overall. However, the preliminary results are encouraging. 



As cities grow and outdoor play areas become a necessity, this innovative turf might just be the game-changer we need, offering the benefits of subsurface water storage without the downsides of traditional artificial fields.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-environmental-benefits">Potential environmental benefits</h2>



Beyond cooling effects and urban flood mitigation, this innovative artificial turf could have several additional environmental benefits. 



By reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides associated with natural grass maintenance, this system may also help lower the urban chemical load. 



Moreover, the use of recycled materials in constructing the water storage layer can further enhance its sustainability profile. 



This approach aligns with global efforts to promote circular economies, where resources are reused and repurposed, minimizing waste and environmental impact. 



As cities continue to grapple with climate change challenges, solutions like these that offer both functional and environmental advantages will be increasingly valuable.

Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
