<p>Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. </p>



<p>In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



<p>Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. </p>



<p>Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.</p>



<p>“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.</p>



<p>This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



<p>To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. </p>



<p>This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.</p>



<p>“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”</p>



<p>Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



<p>Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. </p>



<p>Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.</p>



<p>The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.</p>



<p>The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. </p>



<p>Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



<p>The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. </p>



<p>Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.</p>



<p>For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. </p>



<p>“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). </p>



<p>“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. </p>



<p>Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.</p>



<p>“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.</p>



<p>Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. </p>



<p>"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



<p>According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. </p>



<p>“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. </p>



<p>“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”</p>



<p>To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. </p>



<p>Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.</p>

<p>The Oregon coast, renowned for its rugged beauty and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mussels-near-fracking-sites-are-still-radioactive-years-later/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bountiful seafood</a>, is facing an unprecedented shellfish crisis. </p>



<p>A massive outbreak of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) has forced authorities to take drastic measures, closing the entire coastline to mussel harvesting and imposing restrictions on other popular shellfish like clams and oysters.</p>



<p>"We've had a paralytic shellfish poisoning event in Oregon that we have never seen in the state," declared Matthew Hunter, the shellfish program manager for the <a href="https://www.dfw.state.or.us" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife</a>. </p>



<p>The sheer scale of the outbreak, affecting multiple shellfish species and sickening at least 20 people, has set alarm bells ringing.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-paralytic-shellfish-poisoning-in-oregon">Paralytic shellfish poisoning in Oregon</h2>



<p>Before we dive deeper, let's get to know the villain of our story: PSP. This condition is caused by saxitoxin, a neurotoxin produced by certain types of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-algae-genes-chlorophyll-boost-crop-yields-land-plants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">algae</a>. </p>



<p>When shellfish like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-mussels-are-ideal-for-ecosystem-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mussels</a>, clams, and oysters feed on these algae, they accumulate the toxin in their tissues.</p>



<p>Consuming shellfish contaminated with high levels of saxitoxin can lead to a range of symptoms, usually appearing within 30 to 60 minutes. </p>



<p>Think numbness of the mouth and lips, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, even difficulty breathing and irregular heartbeat. Scary stuff, right?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-survey-on-shellfish-from-oregon-waters">Survey on shellfish from Oregon waters</h2>



<p>The specific factors that triggered this outbreak are still unknown, but state health officials are actively investigating. </p>



<p>They are urging everyone who has collected or consumed shellfish from Oregon waters since May 13th to complete a survey.</p>



<p>The information gathered from this survey will be essential in helping investigators identify the origin of the contamination and determine how widespread the problem is.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By understanding the scope of the outbreak and identifying its source,&nbsp;authorities can take steps to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of shellfish consumers.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-closures-and-restrictions-in-oregon">Closures and restrictions in Oregon</h2>



<p>The impact of this crisis is far-reaching. Not only has mussel harvesting been banned along the entire Oregon coast, but razor clam harvesting has also been shut down along a vast stretch of coastline, from Yachats to the California border. </p>



<p>Bay clam harvesting on the north coast and commercial oyster harvesting in Netarts and Tillamook bays have also been halted.</p>



<p>These closures are a major blow to Oregon's coastal communities, where shellfish harvesting is a vital part of the local economy and culture. "Public health and safety is our top priority," Hunter notes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-silver-lining">Silver lining</h2>



<p>Although the current situation is concerning, there is reason for optimism. The <a href="https://www.oregon.gov/ODA/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oregon Department of Agriculture</a> is actively working to address the problem by conducting frequent tests on shellfish samples. </p>



<p>Their goal is to reopen areas for harvesting as soon as it is safe to do so. To ensure public safety, the department has established a strict protocol for reopening. </p>



<p>An area can only be reopened after two consecutive tests show that toxin levels in the shellfish have fallen below the established safety limit. </p>



<p>This rigorous approach aims to protect consumers and prevent further cases of shellfish poisoning.</p>

<p>Therefore, the safest option is to avoid harvesting or consuming shellfish from any areas that have been closed due to contamination concerns.</p>



<p>The Oregon shellfish crisis serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between humans and the natural world. While we enjoy the bounty of the ocean, we must also respect its power and the potential risks it holds.&nbsp;</p>



<p>By staying informed, following safety guidelines, and supporting responsible harvesting practices, we can ensure that future generations can also savor the delicious and nutritious shellfish that Oregon's coast has to offer.</p>

<p>It acts like a giant conveyor belt, transporting warm surface water from the tropics northward and cold deep water southward. This process helps regulate temperatures, weather patterns, and even marine ecosystems worldwide.</p>



<p>The AMOC is like a house of cards -- disrupt one part, and the whole structure could crumble. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-currents-impact-on-marine-ecosystems">Ocean currents impact on marine ecosystems</h3>



<p>Ocean currents carry nutrients that support marine life.&nbsp;Their collapse would disrupt food chains,&nbsp;leading to a decline in fish populations and other marine species,&nbsp;with cascading effects on the entire ecosystem and industries that depend on it,&nbsp;like fishing.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-socioeconomic-consequences">Socioeconomic consequences</h3>



<p>The combined effects of climate change,&nbsp;extreme weather,&nbsp;food shortages,&nbsp;and displacement of populations could lead to widespread social unrest,&nbsp;economic instability,&nbsp;and conflicts over resources.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heinrich-events-and-ocean-currents">Heinrich events and ocean currents</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-increase-10-times-faster-today-than-past-50000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heinrich Events</a> are periods of rapid iceberg discharge from the massive Laurentide Ice Sheet during the last glacial maximum. </p>



<p>These events dumped huge quantities of cold freshwater into the North Atlantic, weakening the AMOC and throwing the global climate into disarray.</p>



<p>Yuxin Zhou, a postdoctoral researcher at <a href="https://www.ucsb.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Santa Barbara</a>, wondered if the icebergs calving from Greenland’s melting ice sheet could trigger a similar collapse of the AMOC. </p>



<p>To find out, he dove into the past, studying sediments deposited during those ancient Heinrich Events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-thorium-230">Thorium-230 </h2>



<p>Zhou used a clever trick to estimate the amount of ice released during each <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-circulation-may-cause-abrupt-climate-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heinrich Event</a>. He looked at the concentration of thorium-230, a radioactive element that naturally occurs in seawater, in the sediment layers.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p>Unlike uranium, thorium doesn’t dissolve well in water, so it precipitates out on particles in the water column. </p>



<p>Because thorium-230 is produced at a steady rate, more sediment flux dilutes its concentration. In simpler terms, less thorium-230 means more icebergs were melting and dumping sediment into the ocean.</p>



<p>By comparing the rate of iceberg melting during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sea-ice-reveals-that-co2-is-rising-at-the-fastest-rate-in-50000-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heinrich Events</a> to current trends and future projections for Greenland, Zhou made a surprising discovery.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-icebergs-may-not-trigger-ocean-current-collapse">Icebergs may not trigger ocean current collapse</h2>



<p>Zhou found that the predicted ice outflow from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-transformation-ice-melt-plant-growth-vegetation-cascading-effects/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland</a> is comparable to a mid-range Heinrich Event. That might sound alarming, but there’s a crucial difference. </p>



<p>“During <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/petermann-glacier-melting-has-tripled-due-to-warm-ocean-waters/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heinrich Events</a>, the AMOC was already moderately weakened before all the icebergs came in,” Zhou explains. “In contrast, the circulation is very vigorous right now.”</p>



<p>In other words, the AMOC today is starting from a much stronger position than it was during those ancient events, making it less likely to be completely derailed by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-shelves-have-lost-over-35-percent-of-their-volume/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland’s icebergs</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Additionally, Heinrich Events lasted for decades or even centuries, while the period of significant human-caused climate change has been much shorter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“It is possible that we simply haven’t screwed up badly enough for long enough for it to really mess up the AMOC,” Zhou notes.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tug-o-war">Tug-o-war</h2>



<p>There’s another factor at play: the type of freshwater released from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-ice-loss-tracked-by-new-gps-system-on-a-daily-basis/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland</a>. While icebergs have a more significant cooling effect on the ocean, their production is expected to decrease as the ice sheet melts and retreats inland. Instead, more freshwater will be released as runoff from the land.</p>



<p>This sets up an intriguing scenario. “This presents a tug-o-war between these two factors: the more disruptive but decreasing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-ice-shelves-melting-faster-due-to-ocean-currents/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice discharge</a> and the less effective but accelerating runoff,” Zhou says. “It’s going to be a competition, and the interplay between the two will determine the future of the AMOC.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-glimmer-of-hope-for-ocean-currents">Glimmer of hope for ocean currents</h2>



<p>While <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-paradox-ocean-current-collapse-could-plunge-europe-into-cold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> remains a serious threat, Zhou’s research offers a glimmer of hope. “This is a piece of good climate news that hopefully will dissuade people from climate doomism, and give people hope, because we do need hope to fight the climate crisis.”</p>



<p>In summary, this study is a reminder that the Earth’s climate system is complex and full of surprises. While the future of the AMOC is still uncertain, this study suggests that the situation might not be as dire as we feared. It’s a call for continued research and action to protect this vital ocean <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-circumpolar-current-speed-increasing-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">current</a> and mitigate the impacts of climate change.</p>

<p>A study published in the journal <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/psychology/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.02942/full" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Frontiers</em></a> indicates that about 120 minutes per week in nature can lead to better health outcomes​.</p>



<p>“The aim of this study was to define a ‘dose’ of time in nature that could be prescribed to college-age students, as a preventative and supportive mental health and well-being intervention,” wrote the researchers.</p>

World Environment Day: The critical role of nature in human well-being

In today’s rapidly developing world, the enormous value of nature...

<p>The second annual Indicators of Global Climate Change report, led by the <a href="https://www.leeds.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Leeds</a>, has recently highlighted that human-induced warming has risen to 1.19°C over the past decade (2014-2023), up from 1.14°C in 2013-2022.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In 2023 alone, warming reached 1.3°C due to human activity, while natural variability, including El Niño, contributed to a total warming of 1.43°C. The remaining carbon budget for limiting warming to 1.5°C is around 200 gigatons, equating to about five years of current emissions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-warming-caused-by-human-activities">Global warming caused by human activities </h2>



<p>“Our analysis shows that the level of global warming caused by human action has continued to increase over the past year, even though climate action has slowed the rise in greenhouse gas emissions. Global temperatures are still heading in the wrong direction and faster than ever before,” said lead author Piers Forster, Director of the Priestley Center for Climate Futures at the University of Leeds.</p>



<p>“Our analysis is designed to track the long-term trends caused by human activities. Observed temperatures are a product of this long-term trend modulated by shorter-term natural variations. Last year, when observed temperature records were broken, these natural factors were temporarily adding around 10% to the long-term warming,” he added.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-urgency-of-climate-action-nbsp">The urgency of climate action&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The report underscores the urgency of climate action as experts gather in Bonn to prepare for the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The report addresses an “information gap” created by the delay in the next major assessment from the UN’s <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/sixth-assessment-report-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a> (IPCC) until around 2027. To fill this gap, the <a href="https://climatechangetracker.org/igcc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Climate Change Tracker’s Indicators of Global Climate Change dashboard</a> provides updated information on key climate indicators.</p>



<p>The report also highlighted the effects of reduced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sulfur-dioxide-emissions-china/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sulfur emissions</a> from global shipping, which previously had a cooling effect on the climate. Although offset by aerosol emissions from Canadian wildfires last year, the long-term trend shows a decline in this cooling effect.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings-of-the-report-nbsp">Key findings of the report&nbsp;</h2>



<ul>
<li>Human-induced warming reached 1.19°C over the past decade, up from 1.14°C.</li>



<li>This rate of warming is unprecedented in the instrumental record, at roughly 0.26°C per decade over 2014-2023.</li>



<li>High greenhouse gas emissions, averaging 53 billion tons of CO2 per year, are driving this warming.</li>



<li>Improved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/improving-air-quality-could-reduce-severe-cases-of-covid-19/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air quality</a> has reduced human-caused cooling from atmospheric particles.</li>



<li>Unprecedented heat flows into oceans, ice caps, soils, and the atmosphere, tracked by ocean buoys and satellites, exceeded long-term averages by 50%.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limiting-the-rate-of-global-warming">Limiting the rate of global warming</h2>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/un-report-current-fossil-fuel-plans-will-shatter-1-5c-climate-goal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fossil fuel emissions</a> are around 70% of all GHG emissions and clearly the main driver of climate change, but other sources of pollution from cement production, farming and deforestation and cuts to the level of sulfur emissions are also contributing to warming,” Forster explained.</p>



<p>“Rapidly reducing emissions of greenhouse gasses towards net zero will limit the level of global warming we ultimately experience. At the same time, we need to build more resilient societies. The devastation wrought by wildfires, drought, flooding and heat waves the world saw in 2023 must not become the new normal.”</p>



<p>The report, published in the journal <a href="https://essd.copernicus.org/articles/16/2625/2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Earth System Science Data</em></a>, aims to inform new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that countries will submit to the <a href="https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-convention/history-of-the-convention/convention-documents?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw9vqyBhCKARIsAIIcLMHAxt7jFc1buk21aqHm4cFP0OuLhaDsgJe9RMlGXhVOcqaJNwENA74aArh6EALw_wcB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change</a> (UNFCCC) by 2025 to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-world-environment-day-nbsp">World Environment Day&nbsp;</h2>



<p>In 1972, Stockholm, Sweden hosted the first global conference to focus on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/modern-human-diets-pose-many-risks-health-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment</a> as a major issue. This pivotal assembly, referred to as the Stockholm Conference, reflected a growing interest in conservation issues worldwide.</p>



<p>The conference ignited a movement that led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and established June 5th as World Environment Day.</p>



<p>In light of the findings from the Indicators of Global Climate Change report, the need to mitigate human influence on the climate system could not be more urgent. </p>



<p>“Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030,” stated UNEP.</p>



<p>“Unless greenhouse gas emissions fall dramatically, warming could pass 2.9°C this century, which would have catastrophic consequences for life on this planet.”</p>

<p>In recent years, vast swaths of sargassum seaweed have been causing significant disruptions along the coastlines of the Caribbean and West Africa. </p>



<p>This floating <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stunning-photos-show-seaweed-bloom-nearing-florida-beaches/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seaweed</a> has been a part of the North Atlantic's marine landscape since it was first noted by Christopher Columbus in the 15th century.</p>



<p>The explosive growth and overabundance of sargassum is tied to a combination of factors, including climate change and nutrient pollution.</p>



<p>Since 2011, this proliferation has intensified, forming what is now known as "the great Atlantic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-drives-the-great-atlantic-sargassum-belt/">sargassum belt</a>." This massive bloom stretches approximately 9,000km and weighs an estimated 35 million tons, making it visible from space.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-posed-by-sargassum-seaweed">Challenges posed by sargassum seaweed </h2>



<p>The presence of sargassum seaweed is not without its problems. It blocks fishing routes, hampers tourism, disrupts turtle nesting sites, and affects reefs and mangroves. Sargassum also emits a toxic gas that is harmful to both human health and electrical equipment. </p>



<p>Previously, smaller quantities of sargassum that washed ashore were beneficial to marine ecosystems. The seaweed provided natural habitats for various marine life and contributed to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/thinking-of-a-florida-beach-vacation-think-again-unless-you-like-sargassum-seaweed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">beach</a> formation through its decomposition. </p>



<p>However, the unprecedented scale of sargassum blooms presents a formidable global challenge with severe implications for affected regions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-exploration-and-discovery">Scientific exploration and discovery</h2>



<p>An international team of researchers has embarked on a significant research endeavor. The experts set out to analyze the biomass composition of sargassum in an effort to explore its potential for sustainable product development. </p>



<p>Despite its abundance, the utilization of sargassum is limited due to its high arsenic content. This poses a challenge to its application in safe and environmentally friendly products.</p>



<p>Dr. Carla Machado, the first author of the study, emphasized the shift in the role of sargassum due to its increased volumes. </p>



<p>"The vast sargassum blooms of the past decade are a global problem that will continue to grow and have a major impact in the affected countries," noted Dr. Machado.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-from-the-study">Insights from the study</h2>



<p>The researchers applied a variety of methods to process sargassum, such as shade-drying and freezing, to determine the best way to preserve its protein content while potentially reducing other unwanted elements like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arsenic-regulations-water-safer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arsenic</a>. </p>



<p>The results of the study indicate that the seaweed's biochemical composition remains consistent throughout the year. This means that if it is processed correctly, sargassum could be transformed into valuable biomaterials.</p>



<p>An intriguing discovery was made during the study period, which coincided with the April 2021 eruption of La Soufrière volcano on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. </p>



<p>The team found that sargassum exposed to volcanic ash had reduced levels of arsenic but had accumulated other minerals like nickel and zinc. This finding opens new avenues for understanding how environmental conditions affect sargassum's composition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mitigating-sargassum-s-impact">Mitigating sargassum’s impact </h2>



<p>Lead researcher Dr. Thierry Tonon from the Department of Biology at the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of York</a> highlighted the broader environmental interactions at play. "With the great sargassum belt also receiving nutrients from Sahara dust blown across the Atlantic, the issue of seaweed wash-up is likely to persist as a new normal."</p>



<p>The research not only expands our understanding of sargassum but also paves the way for potential solutions to mitigate its impacts. </p>



<p>The identification of a "volcanic tag" in the sargassum that reaches Jamaican shores after a months-long journey across the Atlantic underscores the marine connectivity of the region and points to the longevity and resilience of this seaweed.</p>



<p>As researchers continue to unravel the complex behaviors of sargassum seaweed and its interactions with environmental factors, the knowledge gained will be crucial in shaping an international response to the challenges it presents. The ultimate goal is to transform this marine nuisance into a valuable resource.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How did sargassum become such a big problem?</h2>



<p>Many factors have contributed to the significant increase in sargassum blooms observed in recent years, affecting coastal regions with massive influxes that can impact local ecosystems, tourism, and fisheries.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Nutrient enrichment</h3>



<p>Increased levels of nutrients in the ocean, especially from agricultural runoff, sewage, and other sources of pollution, provide fertile conditions for sargassum growth. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus act as fertilizers, boosting the seaweed's growth rates.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ocean currents</h3>



<p>Sargassum is highly mobile due to ocean currents. It originates in the Sargasso Sea, where it reproduces and grows, and then spreads via currents such as the Gulf Stream, which carries it into the Caribbean Sea and further into the Atlantic Ocean.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Climate change</h3>



<p>Rising <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-temperatures-hit-a-record-high-this-week-with-the-worst-heat-still-to-come/">sea temperatures</a> and altered ocean currents, both consequences of climate change, may create more favorable conditions for sargassum to thrive and spread. Warmer waters can enhance the growth rate of the seaweed.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reproductive strategy</h3>



<p>Sargassum reproduces efficiently through fragmentation, meaning that parts broken off by waves or other disturbances can start new colonies wherever they drift.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-need-for-protection-against-land-degradation">Need for protection against land degradation</h2>



<p>According to the <a href="https://www.unccd.int" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UN Convention to Combat Desertification</a>,&nbsp;a staggering 40% of Earth's land is already degraded - directly impacting the lives of half of humanity.</p>



<p>This degradation takes many forms,&nbsp;from deforestation and desertification to soil erosion and pollution.&nbsp;It's a crisis fueled by unsustainable agricultural practices,&nbsp;overgrazing,&nbsp;mining,&nbsp;and urban sprawl.&nbsp;The consequences are dire:</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Food insecurity:</strong>&nbsp;Degraded land loses its fertility,&nbsp;making it harder to grow crops and raising the specter of famine, especially in vulnerable regions.</li>



<li><strong>Water scarcity:</strong>&nbsp;<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-moving-to-soils-that-lack-the-fungi-to-support-them/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Healthy soils</a> are essential for filtering and storing water.&nbsp;Land degradation disrupts this process, leading to water shortages and exacerbating droughts,&nbsp;a problem that is projected to affect a staggering three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.</li>



<li><strong>Economic hardship:</strong>&nbsp;Millions of people depend on land for their livelihoods.&nbsp;When land becomes unproductive,&nbsp;it plunges communities into poverty,&nbsp;sparking conflict and displacement.</li>



<li><strong>Climate change:</strong>&nbsp;Land use,&nbsp;particularly deforestation and agriculture,&nbsp;accounts for 11% of global carbon dioxide emissions.&nbsp;Degraded land releases stored carbon,&nbsp;further fueling global warming.</li>

This significant global food waste contributes to climate-warming <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-food-system-must-change-if-nations-hope-to-reduce-greenhouse-gas-emissions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a>, suggesting a dire need for systemic change in refrigeration.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shameful-habit-of-food-waste">Shameful habit of food waste</h2>



<p>Food waste refers to food that is <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/reducing-food-waste-greater-food-security-less-environmental-benefits/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discarded or uneaten</a>. This occurs at various stages of the food supply chain, from production and processing to retail and consumption. </p>



<p>In farms, food waste can result from crops left unharvested due to weather, pests, or market conditions.</p>

<p>Consumers contribute significantly to food waste by buying more than they need, improperly storing food, or discarding leftovers.</p>



<p>Food waste has serious environmental, economic, and social impacts. Environmentally, decomposing food in landfills produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.</p>



<p>Economically, wasted food represents a loss of resources like water, labor, and energy used in its production. </p>



<p>Socially, food waste is particularly troubling given that millions of people worldwide suffer from hunger and food insecurity. <p>A recent study reveals the enormous potential of refrigeration to combat the global food waste crisis.</p>



<p>Researchers found that enhancing cold chains -- the refrigerated systems used to transport and store food -- could prevent a staggering 620 million metric tons of food from going to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/waste-food-overeating/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">waste each year</a>. </p>



<p>This innovative approach not only addresses food security concerns but also significantly reduces the environmental impact of food waste. </p>



<p>By implementing fully refrigerated supply chains worldwide, greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste could be slashed by an impressive 41%, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/americans-waste-pound-food/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food system</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-chain-enhancements-in-sub-saharan-africa-and-asia">Cold-chain enhancements in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia</h2>



<p>The study pinpoints Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia as regions with the highest potential for reducing food waste and associated emissions through better refrigeration systems. </p>



<p>South and Southeast Asia could see a reduction in food losses by 45% and a decrease in emissions by 54%. </p>



<p>Sub-Saharan Africa could achieve even greater reductions, with <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-waste-could-be-greatly-reduced-with-better-labels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food loss</a> potentially decreasing by 47% and emissions by 66%.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-localized-food-supply-chains">Localized food supply chains</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the study also sheds light on the benefits of localized, less industrialized food supply chains. </p>



<p>These farm-to-table systems may offer food savings comparable to those achieved through optimized cold chains, presenting a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-harness-fruit-waste-to-extract-energy/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">viable alternative</a> in certain contexts.</p>



<p>Aaron Friedman-Heiman, the study's lead author, shared his surprise at the scale of the global opportunity for reducing food loss and waste.</p>



<p>He emphasized that optimizing food supply chains could address approximately half of the annual food waste.</p>

<p>Food losses are estimated to produce about 8% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. </p>

<p>Developed by researchers at the <a href="https://umich.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Michigan</a>, the study introduces a food-loss estimation tool designed to help stakeholders assess and improve their cold-chain systems. </p>



<p>This tool could be invaluable for a wide range of participants in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-related-disasters-will-disrupt-food-supply-chains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food supply chain</a>, from farmers to grocery retailers and government officials.</p>

<p>The study’s co-author, Shelie Miller, highlights that while the global expansion of cold-chain infrastructure is underway, the development will vary across different regions. </p>



<p>This variable growth suggests that investment decisions in refrigeration improvements need careful prioritization to maximize the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-develop-smart-food-packaging-show-contamination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">intended outcomes</a> of reducing food waste, whether they focus on reducing hunger or cutting down greenhouse gas emissions.</p>



<p>Miller points out that meat, despite constituting a smaller proportion of food waste by weight, accounts for over 50% of the associated emissions. </p>



<p>Optimizing the refrigeration of meat could thus eliminate more than 43% of emissions linked to meat loss alone.</p>

<p>In a move that's sending ripples through the nation, Vermont has become the first state to pass a remarkable law that holds fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in climate change. This isn't just a symbolic gesture; it's a full-on legal battle with potentially massive financial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-people-fear-climate-change-will-end-the-world-during-their-lifetime/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">implications</a> for the industry giants.</p>



<p>The law, which was allowed to take effect without the signature of <a href="https://www.vermont.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Republican Governor</a> Phil Scott, requires fossil fuel companies to pay a share of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/38-trillion-dollars-per-year-economic-losses-expected-from-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">damages</a> caused by climate change in the state.</p>



<p>This is a direct response to the devastating floods and other extreme weather events that have battered Vermont in recent years, events that scientists agree are linked to a warming planet.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aftermath-of-disaster">Aftermath of disaster</h2>



<p>Last July's floods were a wake-up call for Vermont. Torrential rains submerged the capital city of Montpelier, the nearby city of Barre, and other communities. </p>



<p>Roads were washed away, homes were destroyed, and businesses were shuttered for months. Some called it the worst natural disaster since a 1927 flood that claimed dozens of lives.</p>



<p>These images of destruction are etched in the minds of Vermonters, and they've fueled a growing demand for action on climate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/people-want-to-fight-climate-change-more-than-you-think/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">change</a>. The new law is a direct response to that demand, a way for the state to recoup some of the costs of recovery and adaptation from the companies that helped create the problem.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-governor-scott-s-reluctant-approval">Governor Scott's reluctant approval</h2>



<p>Governor Scott, while acknowledging the need to address climate change, expressed concerns about the legal and financial challenges of taking on "Big Oil" alone. However, he ultimately allowed the bill to become law, recognizing the urgency of the issue and the overwhelming support for action from both sides of the aisle.</p>



<p>"I understand the desire to seek funding to mitigate the effects of climate change that has hurt our state in so many ways," noted Scott.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vermont-law-s-workings-against-climate-change">Vermont law's workings against climate change</h2>



<p>The law requires the Vermont state treasurer, in consultation with the Agency of Natural Resources, to produce a report by January 15, 2026, detailing the total cost to Vermonters and the state from greenhouse gas emissions between 1995 and 2024. </p>



<p>The report will assess the impact on public health, natural resources, agriculture, economic development, housing, and other sectors.</p>



<p>The state will use federal data to determine the amount of emissions attributable to each fossil fuel company and will then seek compensation based on a "polluter pays" model. </p>



<p>The funds recovered could be used for a variety of purposes, including upgrading stormwater drainage systems, roads, bridges, and railroads, as well as relocating or retrofitting sewage treatment plants and making energy-efficient weatherization upgrades to buildings.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legal-fight-ahead">Legal fight ahead</h2>



<p>The American Petroleum Institute (<a href="https://www.api.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">API</a>), the oil and gas industry's top lobbying group, has already voiced its opposition to the law, calling it "punitive" and claiming that it violates legal principles. They argue that it unfairly holds companies responsible for the actions of society at large.</p>



<p>This sets the stage for a high-stakes legal battle between a small state and a powerful industry. Vermont lawmakers are prepared for the challenge, confident in the legal soundness of their case. </p>



<p>They believe that the stakes are too high and the costs to Vermonters are too steep to let the companies that caused the mess off the hook.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-will-other-states-follow-vermont-s-lead">Will other states follow Vermont's lead?</h2>



<p>Vermont's bold move could set a precedent for other states grappling with the escalating costs of climate change. </p>

<p>"Finally, maybe for the first time anywhere, Vermont is going to hold the companies most responsible for climate-driven floods, fires and heat waves financially accountable for a fair share of the damages they've caused," said Paul Burns, executive director of the Vermont Public Interest Research Group.</p>

<p>Have you ever seen a mussel? Those unassuming, bivalve creatures you might find clinging to rocks in rivers and streams? Well, they're not just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/young-mussels-are-ideal-for-ecosystem-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">filter feeders</a>, cleaning the water as they eat; they're also living, breathing barometers of our environmental health. And a recent study from <a href="https://www.psu.edu/news/engineering/story/mussels-downstream-wastewater-treatment-plant-contain-radium-study-reports/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Penn State</a> has unveiled a troubling tale these mussels are telling about the legacy of fracking.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mussels-near-fracking-sites">Mussels near fracking sites</h2>



<p>Mussels, while not the most visually captivating of animals, play a crucial role in scientific research due to their unique lifestyle. They are stationary filter feeders, spending most of their lives anchored to one spot in riverbeds or lake bottoms.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This lack of movement means they constantly sample the water around them, absorbing both nutrients and any pollutants present.</p>



<p>Because they are essentially rooted in their environment for decades, mussels accumulate substances in their tissues and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mussel-shells-becoming-highly-porous-warming-waters-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shells</a> over long periods. This makes them exceptional indicators of environmental health, especially pollution levels.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Scientists can analyze the chemical composition of mussels to get a snapshot of what contaminants are present in the water, including harmful substances like radioactive materials.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fracking-s-footprint-in-mussels">Fracking's footprint in mussels</h2>



<p>Scientists at Penn State's <a href="https://www.cee.psu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering</a> initiated a study that focused on freshwater mussels inhabiting the waterways downstream from a wastewater treatment facility in Western Pennsylvania.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This specific facility had a long history of processing wastewater generated from hydraulic fracturing (fracking) operations in the Marcellus Shale, a significant natural gas reservoir that extends across multiple states in the region.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite the fact that the facility ceased accepting fracking wastewater in 2019, the mussels located downstream continued to exhibit elevated levels of radioactivity.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This suggests a potential long-term environmental impact of fracking activities and raises concerns about the persistence of radioactive contaminants in the ecosystem even after wastewater treatment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-radium-signature-in-mussels">Radium signature in mussels</h2>



<p>The scientists found that these mussels, both in their soft tissues and hard shells, contained elevated levels of radium. This wasn't just any radium, though. It had a unique elemental signature, like a fingerprint, that traced it back to the treated wastewater from fracking. Even years after the plant had stopped accepting this waste, the mark of fracking lingered in the river's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quagga-mussel-invasion-threatens-preservation-of-shipwrecks-in-the-great-lakes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystem</a>.</p>



<p>"With a much higher salinity than the surrounding environment, the discharged water has a different chemical fingerprint than what the mussels are used to," explained Nathaniel Warner, a professor involved in the study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Mussels that were closest to the water discharges died off. Further downstream, the mussels found a way to tolerate the salinity and radioactive materials and instead absorbed them into their shells and tissues."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-more-radioactive-than-brazil-nuts">More radioactive than Brazil nuts</h2>



<p>To put this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radioactive-cesium-atoms-directly-imaged-first-time-fukushima-fdnpp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">radioactivity</a> of mussels due to fracking into perspective, the researchers compared the mussels to Brazil nuts, known for their natural radioactivity. Believe it or not, some of the mussels in the study were more radioactive than a serving of these nuts.</p>



<p>While not a direct threat to humans (we don't typically eat these mussels), it does raise concerns about the potential impact on the animals that rely on mussels for food.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ripples-throughout-the-food-chain">Ripples throughout the food chain</h2>



<p>Katharina Pankratz, the lead author of the study, emphasized that mussels aren't just filtering out radium.</p>



<p>&nbsp;"Along with nutrients, mussels also filter contaminants present in the water column, like metals, microplastics, synthetic chemical compounds and other emerging contaminants of concern," she said.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This means the contamination could move up the food chain as larger creatures consume the mussels, potentially affecting endangered species that are particularly vulnerable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-call-for-caution-and-future-research">A call for caution and future research</h2>



<p>This study is a stark reminder of the long-term consequences of industrial activities like fracking. While wastewater treatment facilities do their best to remove major contaminants, trace amounts inevitably remain. </p>



<p>And for creatures like mussels, these traces can accumulate over time, leaving a lasting legacy in their bodies and the environment.</p>

<p>The quest for cleaner air is a noble, shared aspiration for a healthier planet and happier lungs. But what if this pursuit to improve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/u-s-air-pollution-levels-have-dropped-but-not-for-everyone/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">air quality</a> by reducing aerosol pollution, however well-intentioned, inadvertently fuels a different kind of environmental disaster?</p>



<p>A study from the University of California, Riverside (<a href="https://www.ucr.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UCR</a>) reveals a startling paradox: reducing air pollution could lead to an increase in forest fires, particularly in the vast boreal forests of the northern hemisphere.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aerosol-pollution-and-wildfires">Aerosol pollution and wildfires</h2>



<p>The culprits behind this unexpected twist of pollution are aerosols, tiny particles like dust, sea salt, and airborne chemicals produced by fossil fuel combustion. </p>



<p>While these particles are notorious for their role in poor air quality, they also possess a surprising ability to reflect sunlight and brighten clouds, effectively shielding the Earth from some of the sun's heat.</p>



<p>As we clean up our air by reducing aerosol pollution, we inadvertently remove this protective shield, allowing more solar radiation to reach the ground. </p>



<p>"Cleaning up the air, which is something we all want to do, will accelerate global warming and also impact wildfires unless we also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide," warns Robert Allen, a UCR climatology professor and the lead author of the study.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-boreal-forests-and-aerosol-pollution">Boreal forests and aerosol pollution</h2>



<p>The boreal forests, spanning Canada, Alaska, northern Europe, and northern Russia, are particularly vulnerable to this warming effect by reduced pollution. </p>



<p>The increased heat, combined with the greenhouse effect of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/met-office-2024-co2-levels-will-surpass-the-point-of-no-return/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rising carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) levels</a>, creates a perfect storm for wildfires.</p>



<p>Heatwaves and droughts become more frequent and intense, drying out the soil and vegetation, turning them into prime fuel for flames. </p>



<p>"When you dry out the soil, that also dries out plants, which makes them more combustible," explains Allen. "Warming contributes to wildfires."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-air-pollution-and-wildfire-paradox">Air pollution and wildfire paradox</h2>



<p>While both CO<sub>2</sub> and aerosol reductions contribute to warming and increased fire risk, the study reveals a surprising twist: reducing aerosol emissions actually leads to a more significant increase in fires than reducing CO<sub>2</sub> <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urban-greening-is-a-powerful-weapon-against-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">emissions</a>. This is due to a complex interplay between plant physiology, water availability, and temperature.</p>



<p>As plants photosynthesize, they absorb CO<sub>2</sub> through pores in their leaves. With higher CO<sub>2</sub> levels, these pores don't need to stay open as long, leading to reduced water loss and drier soil. </p>



<p>However, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-gets-an-unpredictable-boost-from-air-pollution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warming effect</a> of reduced aerosols exacerbates this drying effect, as higher temperatures increase evaporation from both plants and soil. This creates a tinderbox scenario, where parched vegetation and dry soil become highly susceptible to ignition.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-methane-a-key-piece-of-the-puzzle">Methane: A key piece of the puzzle</h2>



<p>The good news is that there are ways to mitigate the warming effects of aerosol reduction. One promising avenue is to focus on reducing methane emissions from agriculture, fossil fuels, and landfill waste. </p>



<p>Methane, a potent greenhouse gas with a shorter lifespan than CO<sub>2</sub>, has a disproportionately large impact on global warming. Reducing methane emissions could effectively offset the warming induced by aerosol mitigation.</p>



<p>Fortunately, there is already a global movement to address methane emissions. More than 150 countries have pledged to reduce methane emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030. </p>



<p>"We are on the right trajectory with regards to aerosols and methane," says Allen. "I still have hope, but there is a narrow window of time to make this happen and avoid the worst projected climate impacts. This decade is the important one."</p>

<p>The UCR study serves as a stark reminder of the complex and interconnected nature of our planet's systems. </p>



<p>While the pursuit of cleaner air is undeniably important, it's crucial to consider the unintended consequences of our actions. The air <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chemical-composition-of-us-air-pollution-has-changed-over-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a> paradox highlights the necessity of addressing both aerosol pollution and greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously.</p>



<p>By simultaneously reducing both aerosol and greenhouse gas emissions, we can strive for a future where both our air and our forests are healthy and resilient. It's a delicate balance, but one that we must achieve for the sake of our planet and future generations.</p>

Reducing aerosol pollution causes more wildfires in an ironic twist of fate

<p>In a recent study, researchers at the <a href="https://en.ifremer.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">French Institute for Oceanic Science</a> (Ifremer) and <a href="https://www.unil.ch/central/en/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lausanne University</a> reassessed the impact of changing environmental conditions on species extinctions. The experts developed a new model to estimate the number of terrestrial and marine species that are threatened with extinction as a result of climate change.</p>



<p>While traditional models predicted a 54% decline in tropical terrestrial species by 2041-2060, the new model forecasts a more moderate 39% decline. Despite this lower estimate, the results remain concerning, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action to protect biodiversity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-species-pre-adapted-to-past-warmer-climates">Species pre-adapted to past warmer climates </h2>



<p>Temperature variations on Earth range from -70°C in Antarctica to +48°C at the equator. Historically, climatic conditions have shifted, and species may have pre-adapted to past warmer climates similar to those expected by the end of the century. </p>



<p>Previous models did not account for this potential pre-adaptation, leading to possibly inaccurate predictions.</p>



<p>“Take the example of a tropical marine or terrestrial species: traditional statistical models predict that it will disappear in places where the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-global-temperature-exceeded-2c-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">temperature</a> exceeds the current warm limit of 48°C. But this view could be too restrictive, as our knowledge is limited by the study of current climatic conditions,” said lead author Mathieu Chevalier, a marine ecology researcher at Ifremer.</p>



<p>“When a species is 'marked' by climatic conditions, it retains a pre-adaptation to these conditions that can last for thousands or even millions of years,” added senior author Antoine Guisan, a professor of spatial ecology at the University of Lausanne.</p>



<p>“If its habitat evolves towards a climate that the species has already experienced in the past, this pre-adaptation will provide it with a tolerance to these new climatic conditions.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-species-approaching-climatic-limits">Species approaching climatic limits</h2>



<p>The researchers applied their model to nearly 25,000 terrestrial and marine species worldwide. They discovered that 49% of these species live in climate niches near the current climatic limits, and 86% could potentially extend beyond these limits, with this figure rising to 92% for marine species.</p>



<p>“The most striking result concerns tropical areas, for terrestrial and marine species,” said Chevalier. “It is widely accepted that climate change will lead to a massive loss of biodiversity in these areas, up to 54% of tropical terrestrial species by 2041-2060 according to traditional models. Our model puts this prognosis into perspective and predicts a reduction of 'only' 39% in species diversity.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-factors-influencing-species-extinction-risk-nbsp">Factors influencing species extinction risk&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Despite the seemingly less dire prediction, scientists caution that this remains an alarming estimate. They emphasize that climate is not the sole factor influencing species extinction risk. Other anthropogenic pressures, such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/top-marine-predators-may-suffer-massive-habitat-loss-by-2100/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">habitat loss</a>, pollution, and biological invasions, must also be considered.</p>



<p>“Our study shows that it is important to constantly refine our models, and develop new hypotheses about the possible response of certain species,” said co-author Olivier Broennimann, a researcher in spatial ecology at the University of Lausanne.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“If it is likely that tropical species could better tolerate climate change than previously thought, the old estimates remain valid for species in cold, alpine, and polar regions, and to a large extent for species in temperate zones, because the climate that currently prevails in these areas will no longer exist by 2041.”</p>



<p>These findings highlight the need for continuous model refinement and the development of new hypotheses to better predict and mitigate the impacts of climate change on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-are-the-biggest-drivers-of-biodiversity-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">biodiversity</a>.</p>

<p>Humans are accelerating the rate at which organic matter decomposes in rivers and streams on a global scale. These human impacts on waterways pose a threat to biodiversity and increase atmospheric carbon, potentially exacerbating climate change.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research was led by the <a href="https://www.uga.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Georgia</a> (UGA), <a href="https://oakland.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oakland University</a>, and <a href="https://www.kent.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kent State University</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-humans-fundamentally-change-waterways">Humans fundamentally change waterways</h2>



<p>The study is the first to combine a global experiment with predictive modeling to illustrate human impacts on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/quality-waterways-changes-season/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">waterways</a> contributing to the global climate crisis.</p>



<p>“Everyone in the world needs water. When human activities change the fundamental ways rivers work, it’s concerning,” said study co-author Krista Capps, an associate professor in UGA’s Odum School of Ecology and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Increases in decomposition rates may be problematic for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/including-animals-carbon-cycle-models-boosts-ecosystem-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global carbon cycle</a> and for animals, like insects and fish, that live in streams because the food resources they need to survive will disappear more quickly, lost to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disruptions-in-the-global-carbon-cycle">Disruptions in the global carbon cycle</h2>



<p>Rivers and streams play a key role in the global carbon cycle by storing and decomposing large amounts of leaves, branches, and other plant matter.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Normally, the process would involve leaves falling into rivers, where bacteria and fungi colonize the leaves. Insects then eat the bacteria and fungi, using the carbon stored in the leaves to grow, and fish subsequently eat the insects. This process ensures carbon is passed through the food chain.</p>



<p>However, the study found that this process is being disrupted in human-impacted areas, such as those affected by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urbanization-is-a-threat-to-78-of-the-worlds-bird-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">urbanization</a> and agriculture, where leaf litter decomposes more quickly.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Faster decomposition means insects cannot absorb the carbon from the leaves, leading to more carbon being released into the atmosphere, contributing to greenhouse gas pollution and disrupting the food chain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emissions-from-aquatic-ecosystems-nbsp">Emissions from aquatic ecosystems&nbsp;</h2>



<p>“When we think of greenhouse gas emissions, we tend to think of tailpipes and factories,” said co-author Scott Tiegs, a professor of biological sciences at Oakland. “But a lot of carbon dioxide and methane comes from aquatic ecosystems.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>“This process is natural. But when humans add <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/water-quality-threatened-by-nutrient-pollution-in-40-u-s-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">nutrient pollution</a> like fertilizer to fresh waters and elevate water temperatures, we increase the decomposition rates and direct more CO2 into the atmosphere.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decomposition-rates-in-rivers-and-streams-nbsp">Decomposition rates in rivers and streams&nbsp;</h2>



<p>To investigate, the researchers collected field data from 550 rivers across the globe, collaborating with over 150 researchers in 40 countries. They generated one of the first estimates of decomposition rates in rivers and streams worldwide, including understudied areas like the tropics.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The data was compiled into a free online mapping tool that shows how fast different types of leaves decompose in local waterways.</p>

<p>Using predictive modeling, the scientists identified environmental factors responsible for increased decomposition rates, such as higher temperatures and increased nutrient concentrations.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“Both of these factors are impacted by human activities,” said co-author David Costello, an associate professor of ecosystem biology at Kent State. “Reducing human impacts on decomposition will keep more carbon in rivers, preventing it from entering the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and contributing to climate change.”</p>



<p>These findings underscore the importance of taking urgent measures to mitigate human impact on waterways to protect biodiversity and help combat climate change.</p>

<p>Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. <p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.</p>



<p>Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.</p>

<p>A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. </p>



<p>Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. </p>



<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. </p>



<p>Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. </p>



<p>The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.</p>



<p>Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.</p>



<p>Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.</p>



<p>This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. </p>



<p>The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. </p>



<p>"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."</p>



<p>"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.</p>



<p>"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”</p>

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;</p>



<p>ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. </p>

<p>"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.</p>



<p>"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.</p>

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.</p>



<p>In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.</p>



<p>The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.</p>



<p>The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.</p>



<p>The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. </p>



<p>Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.</p>

<p>Scientists have determined that 2022 was the 5th warmest year since 1880. Furthermore, the last nine consecutive years have been the warmest on record.</p>



<p>From devastating floods and wildfires to natural disasters like Hurricane Ian, 2022 showed us yet again how a warming climate affects people across the globe.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"As we look back at 20:22 and years past, we see that each year we better understand the challenges we face and how important it is to meet them," says NASA.</p>

<p>During 2020, average global temperatures matched the hottest year on record. The hurricane season was also record-breaking, with many of the storms intensifying at extraordinary speeds. Hot water in the ocean is fuel for hurricanes. The satellite data shows that it's all one interconnected system showing how  Satellites reveal how Earth's systems are interconnected.</p>



<p>According to NASA, dust swept up from Northern Africa plays a major role in the formation of hurricanes, and is also a key source of fertilization in the Amazon rainforest. As a result of<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/seagrass-wasting-disease-is-fueled-by-climate-change/"> climate</a> change, dust plumes are expected to decline, which will have an effect on vegetation far away.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Images from Earth-observing satellites show how the world’s plant life is affected by natural disasters, fires, and deforestation. Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. <p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.</p>



<p>“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.</p>



<p>The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.</p>



<p>“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.</p>

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.</p>



<p>"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.</p>



<p>"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."</p>



<p>"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."</p>



<p>According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.</p>



<p>"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.</p>



<p>Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.</p>



<p>In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.</p>



<p>Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.</p>

<p>Today's <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. </p>



<p>According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.</p>



<p>"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.</p>



<p>"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."</p>



<p>Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.</p>



<p>The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.</p>



<p>"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.</p>



<p>"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."</p>
