<p><a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.</p>



<p>The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



<p>The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). </p>



<p>Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.</p>



<p>The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. </p>



<p>They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



<p>To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. </p>



<p>That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.</p>



<p>The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.</p>



<p>State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



<p>Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.</p>



<p>Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.</p>



<p>Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. </p>



<p>Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.</p>



<p>Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



<p>The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. </p>



<p>In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.</p>



<p>That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.</p>



<p>Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.</p>



<p>Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



<p>A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.</p>



<p>The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.</p>



<p>Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.</p>



<p>The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.</p>



<p>Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.</p>



<p>Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.</p>

<p>The investigation has revealed a surprising 2.4-million-year cycle in which deep <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-surface-temperatures-are-speeding-up-ocean-currents/">currents</a> fluctuate in strength, corresponding with periods of heightened solar energy and warmer global climates.</p>

<p>The research was a collaboration between experts from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> and <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne University</a>. The team examined the intricate relationship between climate change (on a geological timescale) and the dynamics of ocean circulation, aiming to enhance the predictive models for future climate scenarios. </p>



<p>The study probes whether ocean-bottom currents grow stronger or weaker in warmer climates, distinct from the rapid global warming induced by human activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decades-of-drilling-data">Decades of drilling data</h2>



<p>Utilizing an extensive dataset from over fifty years of scientific drilling across numerous global sites, lead author Adriana Dutkiewicz from the University of Sydney's EarthByte Group, along with Professor Dietmar Müller (University of Sydney) and Associate Professor Slah Boulila (Sorbonne), embarked on this exploratory journey.</p>



<p>The goal was to ascertain the relationship between sedimentary shifts and the Earth's orbital changes, as well as their collective impact on deep ocean circulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-astronomical-grand-cycle-nbsp">Astronomical grand cycle&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Dutkiewicz and her team discovered that deep-sea currents exhibit shifts in a 2.4-million-year cycle, known as an "astronomical grand cycle," that is influenced by the gravitational interactions between Earth and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nasa-may-have-finally-discovered-life-on-mars/">Mars</a>.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“We were surprised to find these 2.4-million-year cycles in our deep-sea sedimentary data. There is only one way to explain them: they are linked to cycles in the interactions of Mars and Earth orbiting the Sun,” Dutkiewicz said.</p>



<p>“The gravity fields of the planets in the solar system interfere with each other and this interaction, called a resonance, changes planetary eccentricity, a measure of how close to circular their orbits are,” added Müller.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deep-ocean-circulation">Deep ocean circulation</h2>



<p>This resonance effect leads to cycles of increased <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magnetic-field-solar-radiation/">solar radiation</a> and, consequently, warmer climates every 2.4 million years, which the study correlated with more active deep ocean circulation.</p>



<p>The research highlights the critical role of deep eddies during these warmer periods, suggesting they might help mitigate potential ocean stagnation scenarios feared to accompany a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).&nbsp;</p>



<p>While AMOC facilitates water mass transport across different latitudes, deep ocean eddies are pivotal in ventilating the oceans during warm climates.</p>



<p>“We know there are at least two separate mechanisms that contribute to the vigor of deep-water mixing in the oceans. AMOC is one of them, but deep ocean eddies seem to play an important role in warm climates for keeping the ocean ventilated," explained Müller.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warmer-oceans-have-more-vigorous-deep-circulation">Warmer oceans have more vigorous deep circulation</h2>



<p>“Our deep-sea data spanning 65 million years suggest that warmer oceans have more vigorous deep circulation. This will potentially keep the ocean from becoming stagnant even if Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slows or stops altogether,” said Dutkiewicz.</p>



<p>This investigation not only challenges existing paradigms but also opens new pathways for understanding the interplay between ocean dynamics and marine life in future climates.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The authors are optimistic that their findings will contribute to refining climate models, enhancing our ability to forecast and respond to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humanity-should-brace-for-catastrophic-climate-change/">climate change</a> effectively.</p>

Silicate minerals, when weathered, remove CO2 from the atmosphere, which is later deposited as calcium carbonate. However, not all weathering processes aid in carbon capture. </p>



<p>The weathering of carbonates, sulfides, and organic carbon-rich rocks can actually release CO2 back into the atmosphere. "These reactions are typically much faster than silicate weathering," Hovius explains. This underscores the complex impact that mountain building has on the carbon cycle and climate regulation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-on-natural-climate-regulation">Insights on natural climate regulation </h2>



<p>To delve into this complexity, the research team employed a weathering model to analyze the rates of sulfide, carbonate, and silicate weathering across several regions with varying erosion rates, including Taiwan and New Zealand. </p>



<p>The findings reveal consistent patterns across all studied locations. "We discovered similar behaviors in all locations, pointing to common mechanisms," says Bufe, indicating a fundamental understanding of how these processes interact globally.</p>



<p>Interestingly, the study revealed that the relationship between <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-erosion-rates-have-exploded-in-the-midwestern-us/">erosion</a> rates and CO2 fluxes is not straightforward. CO2 capture through weathering reaches its peak at moderate erosion rates, approximately 0.1 millimeters per year. Beyond this rate, CO2 capture diminishes. </p>



<p>Additionally, the process can even become a source of atmospheric CO2, especially in regions with high erosion rates like Taiwan or the Himalayas. This occurs because the increase in silicate weathering cannot keep pace with erosion. Meanwhile, the weathering of carbonates and sulfides continues to escalate.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-climate-significance-of-low-relief-mountain-ranges">The climate significance of low-relief mountain ranges</h3>



<p>The research underscores the unique role of low-relief mountain ranges as significant <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mountains-both-carbon-sinks-and-carbon-sources/">carbon sinks</a>. Examples include the Black Forest in Germany and the Oregon Coast Range in the USA. </p>



<p>These regions, with erosion rates around the optimal 0.1 millimeters per year, see an efficient weathering of silicate minerals, which significantly contributes to carbon capture. Bufe elucidates, "Over geological timescales, the temperature to which Earth's 'thermostat' is set therefore depends strongly on the global distribution of erosion rates."</p>

<p>Turbulence is a phenomenon we encounter every day, whether in the swoosh of wind through leaves, the rush of water down a river, or the unsettling bumps mid-flight on an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-has-caused-more-severe-turbulence-on-airplanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">airplane</a>. But what if someone told you a much smaller nudge, even the frenetic movement of a single molecule, could trigger a similar dramatic effect? </p>



<p>Research by Professor Nigel Goldenfeld at the University of California, San Diego reveals the surprisingly spontaneous nature of turbulence. The findings challenge our understanding of how seemingly predictable systems can morph into unpredictable chaos.</p>

<p>"In weather forecasts, there is always a fundamental source of randomness," said Goldenfeld. "The precise sense in which this unpredictability was inevitable wasn’t fully understood before our work." </p>



<p>The experts acknowledge the existence of random, unpredictable events. These unexpected occurrences highlight the inherent limitations in perfectly predicting the behavior of complex systems.</p>

<p>In a recent study led by the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a> and the <a href="https://cyprusturtles.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Turtles</a> (SPOT), researchers have uncovered distressing evidence of plastic pollution's impact on sea turtles in the Mediterranean.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The experts found hundreds of plastic items, including a Halloween toy, within the intestines of deceased sea turtles.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-deceased-sea-turtles-ingested-plastics">Deceased sea turtles ingested plastics</h2>



<p>The study was focused on 135 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/loggerhead-turtles-migrate-using-a-secret-thermal-corridor/">loggerhead</a> turtles found washed ashore or accidentally entangled in fishing nets off the coast of northern Cyprus.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The research revealed that a significant portion of these marine creatures had ingested "macroplastics" - plastic pieces larger than 5mm, ranging from bottle caps to a rubber witch's finger from a Halloween costume.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-lasting-pressure-on-marine-systems">Long-lasting pressure on marine systems</h2>



<p>“High densities of marine plastic pollution are now present across oceanic gyres, coastal waters and beaches, putting long-lasting pressure on marine systems," wrote the study authors. </p>



<p>"An estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year, which is predicted to increase 2.6-fold by 2040. The widespread dispersion and mobility of plastic pollution and its presence in all marine habitats allows it to interact with a wide variety of biota."</p>



<p>"Plastic represents a threat to multiple marine vertebrate species through ingestion, entanglement and degradation of key habitats, although population-scale impacts have been more difficult to determine."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-loggerhead-turtles-as-bioindicators-of-ecosystem-health">Loggerhead turtles as bioindicators of ecosystem health</h2>



<p>The research highlights the loggerhead turtle as a potential "bioindicator" for gauging the breadth and ramifications of plastic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unprecedented-increase-in-global-ocean-plastic-pollution-since-2005/">pollution</a> in marine environments.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"The journey of that Halloween toy – from a child’s costume to the inside of a sea turtle – is a fascinating glimpse into the life cycle of plastic," said lead author Emily Duncan, an ecologist at Exeter. </p>



<p>“These turtles feed on gelatinous prey such as jellyfish and seabed prey such as crustaceans, and it’s easy to see how this item might have looked like a crab claw.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varied-levels-of-plastic-ingestion-nbsp">Varied levels of plastic ingestion&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The investigation identified a total of 492 macroplastic pieces, with a single turtle containing as many as 67 pieces, although the reason for such varied levels of plastic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/baby-sea-turtles-are-swallowing-plastic-trash/">ingestion</a> among turtles sharing the same habitat remains unclear.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The study further observed a "strong selectivity" by the turtles for specific types, colors, and shapes of plastic, predominantly sheet-like (62%), clear (41%), or white (25%) pieces, with polypropylene (37%) and polyethylene (35%) being the most commonly ingested polymers.&nbsp;</p>



<p><br>“It’s likely that turtles ingest the plastics that mostly closely resemble their foods,” Duncan explained. “We still don’t know the full impacts of macroplastic on turtles’ health, but negative effects could include causing blockages and limiting nutrition.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The study spanned a decade, from 2012 to 2022, during which the rate of macroplastic ingestion remained constant, showing no discernible increase over time and no significant difference between turtles that were stranded and those caught as bycatch.</p>



<p>This research sheds crucial light on the issue of plastic pollution in the eastern Mediterranean, yet it underscores the necessity for further study.&nbsp;</p>



<p>To establish loggerhead turtles as an effective "bioindicator," larger sample sizes are required, and the inclusion of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/green-turtles-plastic-food/">green turtles</a> in future research is recommended by senior author Brendan Godley, leader of the Exeter Marine research group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Microscopic organisms living in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-carbon-buried-deep-beneath-the-forest-is-disrupted-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a>, called microbes, are essential for a healthy planet. They help plants grow and decompose organic matter, keeping ecosystems functioning smoothly. But what happens to these vital soil microbes when human actions disrupt the environment? </p>



<p>Researchers at Michigan State University (<a href="https://msu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MSU</a>) are finding answers in a most unexpected place: a 60-year-old underground coal mine fire in Centralia, Pennsylvania. This "press disturbance," as scientists call it, has been continuously burning since 1962, heating the soil above as it spreads. </p>



<p>The research uncovered a remarkable survival tactic used by the dormant soil microbes. The microbes essentially put their life processes on hold, allowing them to endure harsh conditions.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diversity-of-soil-microbes">Diversity of soil microbes</h2>



<p>"If you look in a gram of soil, you have tens of thousands of different bacterial species. Soil is the most diverse microbiome that we know, more diverse even than the human gut," said Ashley Shade, an associate professor in the MSU Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences.</p>



<p>For seven years, Professor Shade and her colleague, Samuel Barnett, a postdoctoral scholar at the lab, analyzed soil dynamics over time in Centralia. Their annual expeditions involved collecting soil samples from fire-affected areas to understand how microbial communities adapt to the heat altering their habitat. </p>



<p>"We go out every October, and we take soil cores," said Dr. Barnett. "We have a big PVC pipe that we sterilize and drive into the soil and pull out about 20 centimeters or 8 inches of soil. Then we sieve the soil to get rid of roots and rocks and the stuff we don't want and then freeze it in liquid nitrogen and bring it to the lab."</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-active-and-dormant-soil-microbes">Active and dormant soil microbes</h2>



<p>There are two main states of soil microbes: active and dormant. Active microbes are busybodies. They're constantly growing, multiplying, and doing their jobs in the environment. This includes cleaning up waste, breaking down dead things, and making sure everything runs smoothly. </p>



<p>Dormant microbes, on the other hand, have slowed down their activity to almost a standstill. They're not growing or reproducing, but they're not dead either. Dormancy is basically a survival tactic that lets these microbes wait until things get better.</p>



<p>The experts observed a surprising change in the balance between active and dormant soil microbes in the burned areas. A large number of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-soil-microbes-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbes</a> in the soil existed in a low-activity state. These microbes survive the harsh conditions by becoming dormant. </p>



<p>When the environment becomes favorable again, the dormant microbes can become active and contribute to soil. The ability to switch between active and dormant states is essential for the soil to recover from the fire damages.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-role-of-dormant-bacteria">Critical role of dormant bacteria</h2>



<p>This study emphasizes the critical role dormant bacteria play in the soil's resilience. This resilience, built on both active and dormant populations, demonstrates the complex way microbial communities respond to the environment. </p>



<p>"Many people don't realize that an incredible number of soil microbes are simply not active and functioning at any given time," noted Professor Shade.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soil-microbes-and-climate-change">Soil microbes and climate change</h2>



<p>Interestingly, the researchers noted a steady decrease in soil temperature within the burned areas over the seven years studied. </p>



<p>Even though the initial heat from the fire subsided over time, the fire's impact on the soil's chemistry remained. This was evident through ongoing carbon dioxide release (CO2 venting) and changes in the soil's acidity (pH levels).</p>



<p>The research shows that dormant soil microbes are actively involved in keeping the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/secrets-of-soil-microbes-could-revolutionize-climate-predictions/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environment stable</a> and helping it recover from disruptions. They have surprising abilities to adapt to harsh conditions. Understanding how these microbial communities function is crucial as our planet faces increasing challenges from climate change. </p>

<p>"If we can understand what wakes up the dormant microbes, we can try to manage the microbiome, for example, to wake up when we need it to wake up, to go to sleep potentially when we need it to go to sleep," said Professor Shade.</p>



<p>As we face climate change and environmental destruction, the microbes of Centralia teach us about nature's inherent ability to recover. By understanding and utilizing this resilience, we can work towards a better future for our planet.</p>

<p>"These simulations also allow us to investigate how regular these connectivity patterns are in time, because a regular larval supply will be essential for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/nutrients-from-seabird-poop-accelerate-coral-reef-recovery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reef recovery</a> in the face of climate change," he concluded.</p>

<p>In a recent research project, scientists made a significant discovery regarding the survival of rainforest seedlings in various environmental conditions. </p>



<p>This study, which meticulously monitored over 5,000 seedlings for 18 months, has revealed a stark contrast in the survival rates of seedlings between natural forests and areas affected by logging -- even after <a href="https://www.earth.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/replanted-seedling_deforestation_borneo-rainforest_1m.jpg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">restoration efforts</a> have been implemented.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-restoration-vs-active-restoration">Natural restoration vs. active restoration</h2>



<p>The research took place within a diverse landscape that includes untouched natural forests alongside areas that were logged three decades ago. Some of these logged areas have been left to recover naturally, while others have undergone active restoration, including tree planting. </p>



<p>A noteworthy phenomenon observed during this period was the occurrence of "mast fruiting," a process where trees drop their fruit simultaneously in massive quantities, leading to a surge in seedling emergence.</p>



<p>Initial observations suggested that both natural and restored rainforests boasted high numbers of seedlings, ostensibly indicating that restoration efforts might enhance fruit production. </p>



<p>However, as the study progressed, it became evident that the survival rate of seedlings in restored rainforests was significantly lower compared to their counterparts in natural forests. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-struggle-of-restored-rainforest-seedlings">The struggle of restored rainforest seedlings</h2>



<p>By the study's conclusion, the number of surviving seedlings in restored and naturally recovering rainforests was similarly low, whereas natural rainforests maintained higher populations of seedlings.</p>



<p>Dr. Robin Hayward, a key researcher in this study, expressed disappointment at the lower survival rates in restoration sites, highlighting the potential implications for the long-term recovery of diverse tree species.</p>



<p>“We were surprised to see restoration sites having lower seedling survival. After such a productive fruiting event in the restored forest, it’s disappointing that so few were able to survive – and to think what this might mean for the long-term recovery of different tree species," explained Dr. Hayward.</p>



<p>This observation suggests that while restoration can boost biomass accumulation, it does not necessarily facilitate the establishment of the next generation of seedlings.</p>



<p>Dr David Bartholomew, based at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Exeter</a> during the study and now at <a href="https://www.bgci.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Botanic Gardens Conservation International</a>, gave his thoughts. </p>



<p>“Our findings suggest that seedlings are experiencing stress in logged forests. This could be due to changes to the canopy structure, microclimate and soil, with current restoration treatments insufficient to eliminate this stress. In particular, highly specialized species seem to struggle to survive, leaving communities with reduced species diversity compared to intact forest," Bartholomew explained.</p>

<p>Daisy Dent of <a href="https://ethz.ch/en.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ETH Zürich</a>, Switzerland and the <a href="https://stri.si.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute</a>, Panama, commented on how the interaction between animals and seedlings in these environments plays a crucial role.</p>



<p>“<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-amazon-rainforest-is-approaching-widespread-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rainforests</a> are complex systems and there are many possible explanations for our results. For example, animals that eat seeds -- like bearded pigs -- may be drawn into restored forest patches to eat the more abundant seeds and seedlings, rather than moving into adjacent poor-quality logged forest. In natural forests, animals potentially move more freely and so do not exhaust seed supplies in the same way," Dent explained.</p>



<p>The findings of this study raise concerns about the potential for regeneration failure in future generations of trees, especially considering the widespread practice of selective logging in the tropics. </p>



<p>Dr. Lindsay F. Banin from the <a href="https://www.ceh.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Centre for Ecology &amp; Hydrology</a> emphasized the importance of understanding the bottlenecks in plant community recovery to improve forest regeneration and ensure the sustainability of degraded forests.</p>



<p>“Together, these results reveal there may be bottlenecks in recovery of particular elements of the plant community. We are now progressing this research into the various stages of the regeneration process -- fruiting, germination, establishment and causes of mortality -- to help understand which mechanisms are driving the patterns we have observed and how we can better assist forest regeneration and support the long-term sustainability of degraded forests," Banin concluded.</p>

<p>This research highlights the critical need for carefully designed, monitored, and adaptively managed restoration projects to recover biodiversity and carbon storage effectively. <p>Conducted in the <a href="https://danumvalley.net/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Danum Valley Conservation Area</a> and the surrounding Ulu Segama landscape, the study emphasizes the significance of intact forests and their role in supporting biodiversity through masting events. </p>



<p>These findings, although preliminary, suggest that long-term research is necessary to fully comprehend the impacts of historic disturbances and devise strategies to improve seedling survival, thereby supporting the goals of the UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.</p>

<p>Deep beneath our feet lie vast landscapes called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/happy-world-peatlands-day-what-is-it-and-why-should-you-care/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">peatlands</a>. These swampy areas store massive amounts of carbon, acting like natural carbon banks. However, a surprising new study reveals that canals dug to drain peatlands are a major contributor to climate change. </p>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucsd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, San Diego</a> (UCSD) have discovered that these seemingly harmless peatland canals act as hidden hotspots for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-co2-emissions-expected-to-reach-a-new-high-in-2023/">carbon emissions</a>. This discovery emphasizes the need to re-evaluate the impact of draining peatlands.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peatland-canals-boost-climate-change">Peatland canals boost climate change</h2>



<p>Peatlands form in areas with constant flooding. Dead plants don't fully decompose due to limited oxygen, accumulating over centuries as peat soil. These unique ecosystems have thrived undisturbed for millennia. </p>



<p>However, as a result of relentless agricultural expansion, particularly in places like West Kalimantan, Indonesia, peatlands are increasingly drained and destroyed. The findings of the research reveal hidden threats associated with the drainage use of peatland canals.</p>



<p>Around one-third of organic carbon leaking from peatland into canals quickly turns into harmful carbon dioxide, a major <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ponds-release-more-greenhouse-gases-than-they-store/">greenhouse gas</a>. </p>



<p>"These are some of the largest stores of carbon in the world outside of the ocean and they've been locked up for thousands of years. Reintroducing any of that carbon into the atmosphere is of major concern when it comes to climate change," said study co-author Dr. Lihini Aluwihare.</p>



<p>This is because, when peatlands are drained via canals, air reaches the previously waterlogged soil. This exposure to oxygen jumpstarts the decomposition of the vast amount of dead plant matter stored in the peat. The breakdown process releases carbon dioxide directly into the atmosphere. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Carbon emissions by peatland canals </h2>



<p>The research team successfully determined the exact rate at which microbes and sunlight convert peatland carbon into carbon dioxide within peatland canals. Their findings emphasize how brighter days, greater oxygen availability, and intensified water movement significantly increase this process.</p>



<p>Shockingly, each square meter of a peatland canal network in these areas releases roughly 70 milligrams of carbon dioxide daily. This translates to around 35% of the dissolved peatland carbon escaping back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, this rate is considerably higher than previous estimates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peatland-canals-affect-oceans">Peatland canals affect oceans</h2>



<p>The study reveals a critical gap in our understanding of how peatland degradation contributes to climate change. Additionally, scientists are unsure about how carbon travels through water from drained peatlands, to canals, and ultimately to the oceans. </p>



<p>Carbon emissions from peatland canals hinder ocean's ability to absorb and permanently store this carbon (a process known as sequestration). So, the study implies that draining peatlands for agriculture releases carbon not only into the air, but also substantially into water systems. </p>

<p>"Looking at 'just' general insect numbers or 'just' biomass may also provide a deceiving picture," said Zhemchuzhnikov. "Based on the long-term monitoring near the research station of Zackenberg, we know that numbers and biomass are not always in sync. This may result in different conclusions about the trophic mismatches."</p>

<p>"With the bright colors of these pitfalls, one can also catch flying insects - the pollinators of the Arctic flowers," said Zhemchuzhnikov. "But it takes a lot of scientific stamina to be able to draw sound conclusions in the long run."</p>

<p>"However, there is an alternative way for going back in time and getting an idea about diet composition. We know that the chemical fingerprint that specific species of insects leave behind in birds can be found in feathers as well. And luckily, we have a huge sample of these feathers from the juvenile birds, collected for several decades in their wintering sites." </p>



<p>"Therefore, we are working on a method where we can track back the diet of the birds, analyzing the feathers that were formed during their growth in the breeding grounds."</p>



<p>By analyzing the chemical signatures left by specific insect species in the feathers of juvenile birds, scientists can reconstruct historical diets, offering insights into how these birds have adapted (or not) to shifts in their food supply over time.</p>

<p>“The Arctic in general is the source of cold air for us when we have these really cold events,” Gervais explained. “As warming continues, we know that the Arctic is going to be less cold. What this work shows us is that the loss of sea ice also changes weather patterns that bring cold air to the middle latitudes. So, warming both depletes your source of cold air and makes it harder to transport.”</p>

<p>“Our research allowed us to dig a little bit deeper into what is going on,” Gervais said. “We were able to see that in addition to the impact of Arctic amplification, there also is an impact on the actual circulation or flow in the atmosphere.”</p>

<p>Remember those cherished beach trips from your childhood? Those memories may be underwater by 2050 if we don't take action on climate change. Researchers from the <a href="https://nationalsecurity.vt.edu/">Virginia Tech National Security Institute</a> have released a study with a stark warning: sea levels could rise by a whole foot, swallowing up our beaches. </p>



<p>To make matters worse, some coasts are actually sinking on their own. Unfortunately, this sinking of land, called <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-seas-sinking-cities-land-subsidence-on-the-east-coast/">subsidence</a>, isn't always considered in planning for our cities and coasts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-sinking-cities">Climate change and sinking cities</h2>



<p>Our warming planet is greatly contributing to the rising sea levels. Melting ice caps and glaciers add more water to the oceans, pushing sea levels up. On top of that, as the oceans get warmer, the water itself expands, making sea levels rise even further.</p>



<p>The recent study has painted a concerning picture for many U.S. coastal cities. By 2050, these cities could lose an extra chunk of land the size of Los Angeles or Chicago due to flooding on top of rising sea levels in 32 major coastal cities.</p>



<p>In these cities, the ground is sinking at the same time the ocean is rising, squeezing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burdens-of-climate-change-sea-level-rise-and-the-risk-of-isolation/">coastal communities</a> from both sides. This is projected to affect up to 273,000 people.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-varying-impacts-across-country">Varying impacts across country</h2>



<p>The impact of sea level rise and land subsidence varies across the country:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-coast">Atlantic Coast</h3>



<p>Eleven cities here could see between 773 and 951 km² of additional land flooded, impacting up to 263,000 people and 163,000 properties. Miami, with its average elevation of less than 2 meters above sea level, is particularly at risk.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-gulf-coast">Gulf Coast</h3>



<p>This region could face between 528 and 826 km² of new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/100-year-floods-will-likely-be-annual-events-by-the-end-of-the-century/">flooding</a> areas, affecting between 110,000 and 225,000 people and up to 109,000 properties. Cities like New Orleans already grapple with high-tide flooding due to below-sea-level areas.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pacific-coast-nbsp">Pacific Coast&nbsp;</h3>



<p>Cities here are comparatively better off, with a projected increase in flooded areas of just 20 to 40 km², affecting 6,000 to 30,000 people and 3,000 to 15,000 properties.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-economic-disparities-and-sinking-cities">Economic disparities and sinking cities</h2>



<p>Climate change and the resulting sea level rise do not affect all communities equally. People who have less money and haven't had a fair shot in life are often stuck in areas more likely to be flooded.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It's not just bad luck, either. Past unfair housing practices pushed these communities into riskier zones. These families can't necessarily bounce back from disasters like wealthier folks can.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Deprived communities need a helping hand, not just to fix the immediate damage, but to build a future where they will be safe. This is about fairness and making sure everyone has a chance to weather the storm, literally and figuratively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sustainable-adaptation-to-prevent-sinking-cities">Sustainable adaptation to prevent sinking cities</h2>



<p>The experts propose working with nature, restoring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-wetlands-are-inching-closer-to-extinction-as-the-world-heats-up/">wetlands</a> and oyster reefs that act like natural shields against rising seas.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Ecosystems act as natural buffers against storm surges and help in sediment accumulation, which can mitigate the effects of land subsidence," said study lead author Leonard Ohenhen from Virginia Tech. These green guardians not only absorb storm surges but also become havens for wildlife, making our coasts healthier places.</p>



<p>The plan goes beyond just waves, though. The experts acknowledge that human actions like draining groundwater can make coasts sink lower. By being smarter about how much water we use and how we develop land, we can prevent this from happening.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The key is planning our cities carefully. This means building on higher ground, making sure buildings can withstand floods, and even designing landscapes to channel floodwaters away from homes and businesses.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What was acid rain?</strong></h2>



<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. </p>



<p>Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. </p>



<p>The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.</p>



<p>Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.</p>



<p>Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.</p>



<p>This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. </p>



<p>The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.</p>



<p>The full study was published in the <em><a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a></em>.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>



<p>The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.</p>



<p>“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. </p>



<p>The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.</p>



<p>“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;</p>



<p>“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”</p>



<p>The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.</p>

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. </p>



<p>"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."</p>



<p>"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.</p>



<p>"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”</p>

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;</p>



<p>ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. </p>

<p>"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.</p>



<p>"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.</p>

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.</p>



<p>In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.</p>



<p>The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.</p>



<p>The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.</p>



<p>The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. </p>



<p>Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.</p>

Satellites also reveal how widespread changes in vegetation impact waterways,&nbsp; the climate, air quality. Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. <p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.</p>



<p>“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”</p>



<p>The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.</p>



<p>The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.</p>



<p>“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.</p>

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.</p>



<p>"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.</p>



<p>"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."</p>



<p>"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."</p>



<p>According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.</p>



<p>"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."</p>

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.</p>



<p>Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.</p>



<p>In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.</p>



<p>Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.</p>

The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. </p>



<p>According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.</p>



<p>"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.</p>



<p>"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."</p>



<p>Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.</p>



<p>The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.</p>



<p>"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.</p>



<p>"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."</p>
