<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.



The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). 



Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.



The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. 



They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. 



That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.



The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.



State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.



Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.



Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. 



Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.



Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. 



In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.



That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.



Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.



Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.



The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.



Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.



The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.



Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.



Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.

This vast region, roughly the size of California, harbors the potential to significantly impact <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/burdens-of-climate-change-sea-level-rise-and-the-risk-of-isolation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global sea levels</a>, with enough ice to cause a rise of more than 10 feet if it were to melt. 



Despite its size and potential impact, this area has received less attention, leaving its vulnerability to climate change largely unexplored until now.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-closer-look-beneath-the-ice">A closer look beneath the ice</h2>



<a href="https://profiles.stanford.edu/eliza-dawson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eliza Dawson</a>, a Ph.D. student in geophysics at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford</a> and the lead author of the study, emphasizes the novelty of their research. 



Her disturbing study sheds light on a previously overlooked area that could be on the brink of a tipping point.



“There hasn’t been much analysis in this region – there’s huge volume of ice there, but it has been relatively stable,” said Dawson. 



“We’re looking at the temperature at the base of the ice sheet for the first time and how close it is to potentially <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-has-lost-3000-billion-tons-of-ice-in-25-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">melting</a>.”

“The temperature of the ice affects how much the radar is reflected in multiple ways, so a single measurement is ambiguous,” said <a href="https://profiles.stanford.edu/dustin-schroeder" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dustin Schroeder</a>, associate professor of geophysics and of electrical engineering. 



“This statistical approach involved essentially picking regions that you could assume were either frozen or thawed and comparing other radar signatures to them. It allowed us to say whether other areas of the ice sheet were definitely frozen, definitely thawed, or tough to call.”

Their findings reveal a complex landscape of frozen and thawed ground, with many areas unable to be definitively classified. 



Significant portions of the ice sheet could be nearing a critical threshold, where even minimal increases in temperature could lead to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-in-distress-the-escalating-consequences-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">widespread melting</a>. 



“This suggests that glacial retreat could be possible in the future,” Dawson said. “This part of East Antarctica has been largely overlooked, but we need to understand how it could evolve and become <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-ice-has-a-history-of-rapid-and-unexpected-changes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">more unstable</a>. What would need to happen to start seeing mass loss?”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tipping-point-a-future-of-rising-seas">Tipping point: A future of rising seas</h2>



The study's implications extend beyond academic circles, stressing the need for comprehensive models that incorporate these new findings to predict how the Wilkes Subglacial Basin might evolve under various climate scenarios.

“This area has conditions that we could imagine changing,” Schroeder said. “And if warm ocean water gets there, it’s going to ‘turn on’ a whole sector of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarcticas-ice-shelves-are-dwindling-at-a-startling-pace/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctica</a> we don’t normally think about as a contributor to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-last-ice-age-shows-how-rising-sea-levels-will-transform-coastal-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sea level rise</a>.”



Their hope is that this research will underscore the importance of including East Antarctica in our global climate considerations, recognizing its potential role in future sea level changes.

Understanding this fork in the road is crucial for devising strategies to mitigate climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-illuminating-the-secrets-of-soil">Illuminating the secrets of soil</h2>



Researchers from <a href="https://www.northwestern.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Northwestern University</a> have embarked on a journey to decipher the mechanisms that determine the fate of plant-based organic matter in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biological-hazard-soil-on-sea-freight-loaded-with-invasive-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a>. 



Through a blend of laboratory experiments and molecular modeling, they've shed light on the intricate dynamics between organic carbon biomolecules and clay minerals. 



These are a key player in the soil's ability to trap carbon. Their critical work opens new avenues for enhancing soil's capacity to serve as a carbon sink.



<a href="https://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/research-faculty/directory/profiles/aristilde-ludmilla.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ludmilla Aristilde</a>, the study’s senior author and an associate professor at Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering, emphasized the global significance of soil's carbon storage potential. 



“The amount of organic carbon stored in soil is about ten times the amount of carbon in the atmosphere,” said Aristilde. 



With <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-salinity-disrupts-the-development-of-wheat-seedlings/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a> holding approximately 2,500 billion tons of carbon, ten times the amount present in the atmosphere, even minor perturbations could have profound implications. 



Aristilde explained further, “If this enormous reservoir is perturbed, it would have substantial ripple effects. There are many efforts to keep carbon trapped to prevent it from entering the atmosphere. If we want to do that, then we first must understand the mechanisms at play.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soil-s-carbon-trapping-mechanisms">Soil's carbon-trapping mechanisms</h2>



Aristilde, alongside Ph.D. student Jiaxing Wang and undergraduate Rebecca Wilson, delved into the interactions between smectite clay -- a mineral renowned for its carbon sequestration abilities -- and a variety of biomolecules, including amino acids, sugars, and phenolic acids.



“We decided to study this clay mineral because it’s everywhere,” Aristilde said. “Nearly all <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-soil-plays-a-major-role-in-fighting-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soils</a> have clay minerals. Also, clays are prevalent in semi-arid and temperate climates -- regions that we know will be affected by climate change.”



Their findings reveal that the fate of carbon in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/amazon-dark-earth-could-revolutionize-forest-restoration/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil</a> is influenced by a complex interplay of factors. 



Electrostatic charges, the structural attributes of carbon molecules, surrounding metal nutrients, and the competitive dynamics among molecules all contribute to soil's carbon-trapping efficiency. 



Remarkably, the study highlights the role of naturally occurring metal nutrients, such as magnesium and calcium, in facilitating bonds between negatively charged biomolecules and clay minerals, thereby enhancing carbon sequestration.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-soil-carbon-and-climate-change-mitigation">Soil, carbon, and climate change mitigation</h2>



This research advances our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ai-shows-how-microplastics-are-harming-global-soil-and-agriculture/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">soil chemistry</a> and offers a blueprint for identifying soil compositions most conducive to carbon trapping. 



Such insights are invaluable for developing soil-based strategies to slow the pace of human-induced climate change. Aristilde's team's exploration extends beyond the individual interactions between biomolecules and clay minerals. 



By simulating real-world conditions through experiments with mixed biomolecules, they uncovered surprising behaviors that challenge previous assumptions about molecular competition on clay surfaces. 



“We know different types of biomolecules in the environment exists together,” Aristilde said. “So, we also performed experiments with a mixture of biomolecules.”



This nuanced understanding of molecular interactions in soil could revolutionize our approach to managing soil carbon storage, with implications for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-soil-microbes-survive-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate change</a> mitigation efforts worldwide.



“This has not been shown before,” Aristilde said. “The energy of attraction between two biomolecules was actually higher than the energy of attraction of a biomolecule to the clay. That led to a decrease in adsorption. It changes the way we think about how molecules compete on the surface. They aren’t just competing for binding sites on the surface. They can actually attract each other.”

Australian geologists have shared new findings on an extreme ice-age event that enveloped Earth in a snowball over 700 million years ago, a period marked by a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowball-earth-may-not-have-been-frozen-solid/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">planet-wide glacial cover</a> extending from the poles to the equator. 



This fascinating research from a group of scientists at the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> deepens our comprehension of Earth's natural temperature regulation mechanisms, while highlighting the delicate balance of our planet's climate in response to shifts in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-under-the-ice-of-snowball-earth">Under the ice of "Snowball Earth"</h2>



<a href="https://sydney.edu.au/science/people/adriana.dutkiewicz.php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz</a>, the study's lead author and ARC Future Fellow, paints a vivid picture of this ancient freeze, which has come to be known as "Snowball Earth."



“Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over,” explained Dr Dutkiewicz. “That’s just what happened about 700 million years ago; the planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator and temperatures plunged. However, just what caused this has been an open question."



A recent geological field trip to the Ranges, under the leadership of co-author <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/directory/alan.collins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Alan Collins</a> from the <a href="https://www.adelaide.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Adelaide</a>, inspired the team to employ the University of Sydney <a href="https://www.earthbyte.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EarthByte</a> computer models for probing the cause and the remarkably prolonged duration of this ice age.



Named after Charles Sturt, the 19th-century European colonial explorer of central Australia, the Sturtian glaciation spanned from 717 to 660 million years ago. 



This period, occurring long before the emergence of dinosaurs and complex terrestrial plant life, marks a significant epoch in Earth's prehistoric timeline.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sturtian-glaciation-a-deep-dive">Sturtian glaciation: A deep dive</h2>



They propose a compelling theory: the ice age, known as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowball-earth-tectonic-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sturtian glaciation</a>, was primarily triggered by historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, compounded by the weathering of volcanic rock in present-day Canada, which absorbed atmospheric CO2.



“We now think we have cracked the mystery: historically low volcanic carbon dioxide emissions, aided by weathering of a large pile of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada; a process that absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide," said Dr Dutkiewicz.



The significance of this glaciation, stretching from 717 to 660 million years ago, cannot be overstated. Occurring well before the age of dinosaurs and complex terrestrial plant life, it represents a pivotal epoch in Earth's history. 



Dr. Dutkiewicz explains, "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowball-earth-volcanic-activity/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Various factors</a> have been considered for the initiation and conclusion of this ice age, but its remarkable duration of 57 million years has been especially baffling."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-different-geological-forces-at-play">Many different geological forces at play</h2>



The research team's investigations reveal a correlation between the onset of the Sturtian glaciation and a dramatic reduction in volcanic CO2 emissions. This condition persisted throughout the "Snowball Earth" ice age.

This period was characterized by an absence of multicellular animals and land plants, with greenhouse gas levels predominantly influenced by volcanic activity and silicate rock weathering.



Professor Dietmar Müller, a co-author from the University of Sydney, emphasizes the geological dominance over climate during this era, noting a "double whammy" effect.



During this "Snowball Earth" period, a reconfiguration of plate tectonics reduced volcanic degassing to a minimum, while erosion of a volcanic region in Canada led to significant CO2 absorption. 



"Geology ruled climate at this time. The result was that atmospheric CO2&nbsp;fell to a level where glaciation kicks in -- which we estimate to be below 200 parts per million, less than half today’s level," Müller explained.



The resulting drop in atmospheric CO2, estimated to fall below 200 parts per million, was critical for glaciation onset, marking a stark contrast to today's levels.

“There are many other steps we must take to reduce PFAS pollution, including ending non-essential uses of PFAS, ending industrial discharges of PFAS into the air and water, cleaning up legacy PFAS pollution, and properly disposing of PFAS waste,” said Faber.



The proposed PFAS drinking water standard, announced by the EPA in March 2023, aims to establish science-based limits for six PFAS compounds known for their adverse health effects, including cancer and immune system damage.

The EWG’s PFAS contamination map reveals that as of February 5, there are 5,021 known contaminated sites across 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four territories.

PFAS, due to their persistent nature, pose significant health risks, including immune system suppression, increased cancer risk, harm to fetal development, and reduced vaccine effectiveness. These modifications, particularly in genes crucial for fertility, embryonic development, neurodevelopment, and hormone regulation, are associated with increased incidences of birth defects and disorders, including neurodevelopmental and metabolic issues.



“We identified regions of the sperm epigenome that are associated with the serum levels of DDE (chemicals that form when DDT breaks down) and this association follows a dose-response trend. I think that's quite striking, in that the more DDE you’re exposed to, the higher the chromatin, or DNA methylation defects are in the sperm,” said lead author Ariane Lismer, an expert in embryogenesis and epigenetic inheritance at McGill.

The study also draws attention to the broader implications of climate change, which exacerbates the spread of DDT through the so-called "grasshopper effect," illustrating how this toxin can travel and persist in colder regions, particularly the Arctic food chain.

Furthermore, the experts advocate for a more inclusive approach to child health and development, stressing the importance of considering the paternal role. For instance, co-author Janice Bailey,&nbsp; the Scientific Director at <a href="https://frq.gouv.qc.ca/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fonds de Recherche du Québec en Nature et Technologies</a> (FRQNT), highlighted the overlooked impact of fathers' environmental exposures.&nbsp;



“We tend to think all fathers have to do is fertilize. But in fact, we forget that half of that genome and epigenome comes from the fathers, and half of it comes from the mothers. What that epigenome does in embryo development is critical for normal development.”

Such contamination is a stark indicator of human environmental impact and serves as a historical marker for the onset of the Anthropocene epoch, a period defined by human activities being the dominant influence on climate and the environment.



Corals have long been valued in paleoclimate research for their ability to record environmental data analogous to tree rings, given their slow and regular growth. While traditionally used to study past climatic conditions like water temperature and chemistry, the detection of pollutant particles in corals marks a novel method for examining human-induced environmental changes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historic-rate-of-fossil-fuel-combustion">Historic rate of fossil fuel combustion</h2>



“The discovery of these pollutants embedded in coral skeletons extend over decades and paint a clear picture of how extensive human influence is on the environment,” said lead author Lucy Roberts, an environmental geochemist at UCL. “It’s the first time we’ve been able to see this kind of contaminant in corals, and its appearance in these deposits parallel the historic rate of fossil fuel combustion in the region.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cladocora-caespitosa">Cladocora caespitosa</h2>



The study focused on the coral species Cladocora caespitosa, collected from a reef off Castelló, Spain. This coral species is notable for being the only Mediterranean coral capable of forming large reefs, growing at an average rate of about 0.3 centimeters per year.&nbsp;



The selected site, positioned nearly 60 kilometers from the shore and within a protected marine reserve, minimizes potential local contamination influences.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-corals-as-natural-archives">Corals as natural archives</h2>



In the laboratory, the coral samples were dissolved in acid to isolate any pollutant particulates within the skeletons. The researchers utilized microscopes and x-ray analysis to identify and analyze the SCPs, finding a notable increase in contamination between approximately 1969 and 1992, coinciding with rapid industrialization and increased coal consumption in Europe.



This correlation between coral SCP contamination and historical pollution levels supports the concept of using corals as natural archives to monitor pollution trends over time. The study's findings contribute to the broader scientific endeavor to define the Anthropocene epoch, advocating for the inclusion of SCP presence as a key marker.

In its latest report, the European Union's climate change monitoring service confirmed that the world has just endured its warmest January. 



This new record marks a historical moment where, for the first time, the average temperature over a 12-month period exceeded 1.5C (2.7F) above pre-industrial times.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surge-in-global-temperatures">Surge in global temperatures</h2>



The unsettling news comes on the heels of 2023 being named the planet's hottest year since records began in 1850. 



The intensification of human-induced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wilting-giants-arizonas-saguaro-cacti-are-collapsing-amid-record-heat/">climate change</a>, coupled with the effects of El Niño - a climate pattern known for warming the surface waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean - has been pinpointed as the key drivers behind this surge in global temperatures.



"It is a significant milestone to see the global mean temperature for a 12-month period exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial temperatures for the first time," said Matt Patterson, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Oxford. This underscores the gravity of the situation, signaling a critical juncture in our ongoing battle against climate change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-paris-agreement-nbsp">Paris agreement&nbsp;</h2>

The surpassing of the 1.5C mark in a 12-month period does not directly imply a failure to meet the goals of the Paris agreement. However, some scientists express skepticism regarding the feasibility of maintaining temperatures within the 1.5C limit.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-immediate-action-is-needed">Immediate action is needed</h2>



The experts are calling for immediate and significant action to reduce CO2 emissions, thereby minimizing further temperature increases. 



"Rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are the only way to stop global temperatures increasing," stated Samantha Burgess, C3S deputy director, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action.



However, efforts to implement robust policies aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions are being hindered by economic challenges and political pressures, with many governments facing scrutiny over their commitment to environmental initiatives amidst a crucial year for democratic elections worldwide.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-heading-towards-catastrophe-nbsp">Heading towards catastrophe&nbsp;</h2>



Denmark's Global Climate Policy Minister, Dan Jorgensen, expressed a dire warning. "We are heading towards a catastrophe if we don't fundamentally change the way we produce and consume energy within a few years," Jorgensen told Reuters. "We don't have long."



Looking ahead, the prognosis for global temperatures remains concerning, with every month since June 2023 breaking records for being the hottest compared to their respective months in previous years.&nbsp;



U.S. scientists predict a one-in-three chance that 2024 will surpass last year's temperatures, potentially ranking it among the top five warmest years on record. 



Although El Niño began to weaken last month, with prospects of shifting to its cooler counterpart, La Niña, later this year, January already set a new record for the highest average global sea surface temperatures.

Published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/D3EM00439B" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Environmental Science Processes &amp; Impacts</a> by The Royal Society of Chemistry, the research underscores the potential air quality hazards posed by fragranced cleaning products within homes.&nbsp;



These products release a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which are dangerous or can transform into harmful secondary pollutants. 



Despite the rising popularity of "green" cleaners under the belief of their health and environmental benefits, the study conducted by the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of York</a> challenges this assumption.



The investigation focused on comparing the VOC output of 10 traditional and 13 "green" cleaning products, finding that the latter tend to release more monoterpenes. 



This increase in monoterpene emissions can lead to higher concentrations of secondary pollutants like formaldehyde and peroxyacyl nitrates.



These chemicals pose significant health risks, including respiratory issues and potential skin irritation. Long-term exposure to certain pollutants like formaldehyde may even increase cancer risk.

“Our research found there is no strong evidence to suggest that clean green products are better for indoor air quality compared to regular products. In fact, there was very little difference,” said lead author Ellen Harding-Smith, an Environmental Chemistry researcher at the Department of Environment &amp; Geography.&nbsp;



“Many consumers are being misled by the marketing of these products and could be damaging the air quality in their homes as a result - potentially putting their health at risk. For so many products on the supermarket shelves, green doesn’t mean clean.”



To mitigate the potential harm caused by these products, Harding-Smith advises manufacturers to disclose more information about their ingredients and to educate consumers on improving indoor air quality, such as increasing ventilation and opening windows during use. 



This approach could significantly enhance the safety and environmental friendliness of cleaning products used in homes.

Monitoring indoor air quality through various sensors and indicators can also help identify and mitigate pollution sources effectively, ensuring a healthier indoor environment.

A disturbing study in Antarctica has brought to light the dramatic and swift reduction of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet at the conclusion of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clues-from-the-last-ice-age-help-predict-oceans-response-to-continued-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last Ice Age</a>, approximately 8,000 years ago. 



The discovery, encapsulated in an ice core, reveals an astonishing reduction of 1500 feet (450 meters) in ice thickness in less than two centuries, a scale surpassing the height of the Empire State Building. 



This unprecedented finding, uncovered by researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> and the <a href="https://www.bas.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">British Antarctic Survey</a>, marks the first evidence of such rapid ice loss in Antarctica.

Their research has ignited concerns over the potential instability of Antarctica ice, particularly of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, in response to today's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-experienced-the-most-intense-heat-wave-ever-recorded/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">escalating temperatures</a>.



The implications of this study are profound, especially considering the Antarctic ice sheets' capacity to elevate global sea levels by about 187 feet (57 meters). 



The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is under particular scrutiny due to its position on bedrock below sea level, rendering it especially susceptible to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-in-distress-the-escalating-consequences-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate-induced changes</a>.



“We now have direct evidence that this ice sheet suffered rapid ice loss in the past,” said Professor Eric Wolff, senior author of the new study from Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences. 



“This scenario isn’t something that exists only in our model predictions and it could happen again if parts of this ice sheet becomes unstable.”

The study utilized ice cores, which are essentially archives of past climates and environmental conditions, to understand the historical dynamics of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-has-lost-3000-billion-tons-of-ice-in-25-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice sheet</a>. 



By drilling a 651-meter-long ice core from Skytrain Ice Rise in 2019, the researchers were able to analyze indicators such as stable water isotopes and air bubble pressure to deduce past temperatures and ice thickness.



“We wanted to know what happened to the West Antarctic Ice Sheet at the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-last-ice-age-shows-how-rising-sea-levels-will-transform-coastal-habitats/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Last Ice Age</a>, when temperatures on Earth were rising, albeit at a slower rate than current anthropogenic warming,” said Dr Isobel Rowell, study co-author from the British Antarctic Survey. “Using ice cores we can go back to that time and estimate the ice sheet’s thickness and extent.”

The study suggests that the rapid thinning 8,000 years ago was likely initiated by warm water infiltrating beneath the ice sheet's edge, leading to a dramatic detachment and the formation of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-largest-iceberg-a23a-undergoing-major-erosion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ronne Ice Shelf</a>. 



This event resulted in significant geographic changes, evidenced by an increase in sodium content in the ice, indicative of the sea advancing closer to the drilling site following the ice shelf's retreat.



The precision of the data obtained from the ice cores provides a more accurate timeline for these events, refining previous models that estimated the retreat to have occurred between 12,000 and 5,000 years ago. This specificity is a critical advancement for future modeling efforts.



“We already knew from models that the ice thinned at around this time, but the date of this was uncertain,” said Rowell. “We now have a very precisely dated observation of that retreat which can be built into improved models.”



Despite the historical instability, the ice sheet stabilized once it receded to its present extent. However, the study underscores the urgent need to determine whether <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctica-is-experiencing-rapid-plant-growth-concerning-scientists/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contemporary warming</a> could trigger a similar or even more drastic response.



As Professor Wolff succinctly put it, understanding whether additional warmth could destabilize the ice and induce a new phase of retreat is now of paramount importance.

In a new study, researchers have unveiled a major contributor to the decline in nighttime pollinator activity, with human activities being identified as a primary culprit.&nbsp;



The study reveals that nitrate radicals (NO3) in the atmosphere, resulting from the combustion of gas and coal, degrade the scent chemicals of common <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wildflowers-are-self-fertilizing-to-deal-with-a-lack-of-pollinators/">wildflowers</a>, thus impairing the ability of nighttime pollinators to locate these flowers through smell.



The team was co-led by Jeff Riffell, a professor of Biology, and Joel Thornton, a professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pale-evening-primrose">Pale evening primrose</h2>



The researchers focused on the pale evening primrose (Oenothera pallida), a wildflower native to the arid regions of the western United States.&nbsp;



This flower was chosen due to its white blossoms that emit a scent attracting a diverse group of pollinators, notably nocturnal moths, which are among its most crucial pollinators.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chemical-components-nbsp">Chemical components&nbsp;</h2>



The experts embarked on a detailed analysis of the wildflower’s scent by collecting samples from field sites in eastern Washington. Utilizing advanced chemical analysis techniques, including mass spectrometry, they identified and examined the dozens of individual chemicals that constitute the flower's scent.&nbsp;



“When you smell a rose, you’re smelling a diverse bouquet composed of different types of chemicals,” said Professor Riffell. “The same is true for almost any flower. Each has its own scent made up of a specific chemical recipe.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights">Critical insights</h2>



The findings were startling. When exposed to NO3, certain key scent chemicals, particularly monoterpene compounds which moths find highly attractive, were nearly eradicated. This discovery was further explored through experiments with moths, which demonstrated a remarkable ability to detect scents, akin to dogs and far surpassing human olfactory capabilities.&nbsp;



The researchers used a wind tunnel and an odor-stimulus system to simulate the flower's scent in the presence of NO3, observing a significant decrease in the moths' ability to locate the scent source.&nbsp;



For instance, the accuracy of the tobacco hawkmoth (Manduca sexta) dropped by 50%, and the white-lined sphinx (Hyles lineata), a primary nocturnal pollinator, could not locate the source at all.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-altered-floral-scent">Altered floral scent</h2>



Further field experiments reinforced these findings, revealing a drastic reduction in moth visitation to flowers when their scent was altered by NO3.&nbsp;



Riffell emphasized the impact of NO3 on reducing the "reach" of a flower’s scent, severely limiting its ability to attract nighttime pollinators before the scent becomes undetectable.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-high-risk-regions">High-risk regions</h2>



The study also compared the effects of daytime versus nighttime pollution on floral scents, concluding that nighttime pollution poses a much greater threat due to the stability of NO3 in the absence of sunlight, which otherwise helps degrade NO3.



Utilizing a computer model to simulate global weather patterns and atmospheric chemistry, the researchers identified regions most at risk of experiencing disruptions in plant-pollinator communication due to NO3 pollution. These areas span across western North America, Europe, the Middle East, Central and South Asia, and southern Africa.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-broader-implications-nbsp">Broader implications&nbsp;</h2>



“Outside of human activity, some regions accumulate more NO3 because of natural sources, geography and atmospheric circulation,” said Professor Thornton, who added that natural sources of NO3 include wildfires and lightning.&nbsp;



“But human activity is producing more NO3 everywhere. We wanted to understand how those two sources - natural and human - combine and where levels could be so high that they could interfere with the ability of pollinators to find flowers.”



“Our approach could serve as a roadmap for others to investigate how pollutants impact plant-pollinator interactions, and to really get at the underlying mechanisms."



“You need this kind of holistic approach, especially if you want to understand how widespread the breakdown in plant-pollinator interactions is and what the consequences will be.”

This analysis, which includes data from nearly all member states of the World Health Organization (WHO), sheds light on the stark differences in mortality rates due to air pollution between high-income and low-income countries.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-study-significance-nbsp">Study significance&nbsp;</h2>



"In 2022, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) killed 41 million people, equivalent to 74% of all deaths globally. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for most NCD deaths, or 17.9 million people die annually from CVD," wrote the study authors.&nbsp;



"Traditional risk factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol, and unhealthy diet all increase the risk of dying from a CVD. Air pollution, both outdoor or ambient and household, is not included in this risk calculation despite air pollution being a major contributor to the global burden of disease, with an estimated 12% of all attributable deaths in 2019."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-pervasive-impact-of-air-pollution">Pervasive impact of air pollution</h2>



The study's findings are a grim reminder of the pervasive impact of air pollution on public health, particularly in relation to ischemic heart disease and stroke - two major types of cardiovascular diseases.&nbsp;



The analysis revealed that in all 183 countries examined, deaths related to ischemic heart disease attributable to air pollution were more common than stroke-related deaths caused by the same factor. This distinction underscores the varied ways in which air pollution can affect cardiovascular health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unequal-burden-of-air-pollution-nbsp">Unequal burden of air pollution&nbsp;</h2>



In 2019, the rate of ischemic heart disease-related deaths linked to outdoor air pollution was significantly higher in low-income countries, with 70 deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 16 per 100,000 in high-income countries. This disparity highlights the unequal burden of air pollution, with low-income countries facing more severe health impacts due to poorer air quality.



Furthermore, the research emphasizes a critical issue facing low-income countries: household air pollution. The use of polluting fuels and stoves for cooking - a common practice in these regions - was identified as a major contributor to the problem, leading to more than double the number of stroke-related deaths compared to outdoor air pollution (39 stroke-related deaths per 100,000 versus 19 per 100,000).&nbsp;



This aspect of air pollution represents a significant challenge to public health in low-income countries, where access to clean cooking technologies is often limited.

Study co-author Dr. Nikolai Khaltaev emphasized the importance of addressing air pollution as part of a holistic approach to cardiovascular disease prevention.&nbsp;



“Effective air pollution control along with lifestyle modifications and disease management should be essential components of cardiovascular disease preventive strategies,” said Dr. Khaltaev.

"Despite increasing awareness of the impact of air pollution on population health, appreciation of air pollution as a modifiable risk factor is still limited among the health professionals who are traditionally more focused on the classic risk factors," wrote the researchers.



"It is important to raise awareness about the harmful impact of air pollution on CVD mortality among the general population, health care providers, research community, and politicians."

Forests, covering a third of the planet's land surface, are crucial for carbon storage and regulating the water cycle. The research uniquely focuses on both boreal and tropical forests, which account for 27% and 45% of the world's forested areas, respectively.&nbsp;



These ecosystems exhibit distinct differences in their emissions and the processes of cloud formation, influencing the feedback loop between forests, clouds, and the climate differently.



"This study, utilizing long-term data from diverse forest environments in Finland and Brazil, marks the first time observational evidence has been presented for these interactions in tropical rainforests," said Sara Blichner, a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Environmental Sciences at Stockholm University.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-key-findings">Key findings</h2>



One of the critical findings of the study is the underrepresentation of forests in current climate models, particularly regarding their role in cloud formation.



"Our findings suggest that current models may underestimate the impact of forests on cloud formation and climate, especially in tropical regions, which are crucial due to the high amount of solar radiation these areas receive at these latitudes," Blichner explained.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
