Climate change reshapes where people live, altering both the desire and the ability to move. When heat waves, droughts, and floods strike, not everyone responds the same way. A study in&nbsp;Nature Communications&nbsp;shows that age and education strongly influence who migrates and who remains.



The research reveals a complex story: extreme weather pushes some groups to leave while trapping others in place. This challenges the image of mass waves of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-wins-in-2025-came-from-unexpected-places/">climate</a> refugees often evoked in debates.



Study lead author Hélène Benveniste is an assistant professor of environmental social sciences at the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a>.



"Weather extremes can both incentivize people to move away and increase the number of people who don't have the ability to migrate," said Professor Benveniste.



"Our research shows that migration in response to weather, just like migration decisions in general, is highly dependent upon demographic characteristics."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-and-migration-patterns">Climate and migration patterns</h2>



Earlier research often gave mixed signals on whether women, men, or people with different education levels were more likely to migrate under extreme <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-will-climate-change-hit-hardest-global-index-reveals-vulnerability/">weather</a>. 



By analyzing detailed global migration records, Benveniste and colleagues showed that these contradictions arise because responses vary sharply across demographics and local climates.



The team examined more than 125,000 cross-border cases and nearly half a million within-country moves. They categorized migrants by age, education, and sex, and then connected these groups to weather records like temperature and soil moisture. 



This approach revealed that migration is best understood not by how many move, but by who does.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-trapped-and-cannot-migrate">Trapped and cannot migrate</h2>



The new model predicted migration up to 12 times better than previous approaches. Yet weather alone explained only a small fraction of migration, since economics, politics, and social ties also weigh heavily.



Still, striking demographic patterns emerged. Children under 15 were less likely to migrate following extreme heat. Older adults with little education, however, were more likely to leave, while highly educated adults showed little change.



"Our results indicate that many among those most likely to suffer from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-is-just-three-years-away-from-dangerous-carbon-milestone/">climate</a> change impacts will not be able to get out of harm's way," noted the researchers. 



This creates a "double penalty," where people with the fewest resources both struggle to adapt locally and lose migration as an option.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-climate-and-migration">Local climate and migration</h2>



Climate zones shape how weather influences moves within countries. In tropical regions, hotter days increased migration among educated adults but had little effect on those with less schooling. 



In arid regions, dry spells spurred moves especially among the least educated, while heavy rains or flooding also triggered departures.



The analysis highlights how vulnerability interacts with opportunity. Those reliant on agriculture, often with little education, may feel a strong push to leave during drought, yet lack the means to relocate across borders. Instead, they may move to nearby towns or cities when conditions deteriorate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-migrates-and-who-doesn-t">Who migrates and who doesn't </h2>



The study emphasizes that climate change will not necessarily unleash waves of migrants. Instead, it will reshape the composition of those who move. 



Projections suggest that by the end of the century, older adults with little education may migrate across borders at higher rates, while the youngest and least educated will migrate less.



This shift means that population averages mask the real story: dramatic differences between groups cancel each other out. Policies that only consider total migration numbers risk overlooking those most affected.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-responses-to-long-term-changes">Responses to long-term changes</h2>



The researchers caution that responses to long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wealthy-elite-responsible-for-majority-of-global-climate-warming/">climate</a> change may differ from reactions to short-term weather. 



Communities may adapt with new crops or technologies, reducing the need to move. Yet if conditions outpace these adaptations, migration pressures could rise again.



Destination conditions also matter. High heat in receiving countries can discourage movement for some groups, while wetter conditions may attract others, especially educated adults. 



Household factors, such as whether people have children, further influence decisions, with parents often less likely to move.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-future-climate-shocks">Preparing for future climate shocks</h2>



Policymakers often prepare for large waves of climate refugees. But the evidence points to a subtler reality: climate change will alter who is able to move, while many vulnerable groups remain trapped.



"We hope that policymakers use these results as a basis to more squarely address the needs of different demographic groups," Benveniste said. "We need to answer the needs not just of the people who move, but also those who are moving less."



The science is clear: climate-driven migration is less about numbers and more about people. Understanding who moves, who stays, and why is key to preparing for a warmer, less predictable world.

In theory, planting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/traditional-forest-farming-is-an-overlooked-climate-solution/">trees</a> can wipe away the carbon cost of burning fossil fuels. But a new peer-reviewed analysis shows just how massive that effort would need to be. 



To balance the reserves of the 200 largest oil, gas, and coal companies, the world would have to create an engineered forest covering about 9.4 million square miles - an area larger than all of North America.



“Afforestation on that scale would push people off their land and erase existing habitats,” said Alain Naef, an environmental economist at <a href="https://essec.edu/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ESSEC Business School</a> and lead author of the study.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-afforestation-alone-cannot-fix-emissions">Afforestation alone cannot fix emissions</h2>



Afforestation, the deliberate creation of new <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/afforestation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forests</a>, is often promoted as the cheapest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/forests-now-emit-more-carbon-than-they-store-due-to-wildfires/">natural sink</a> for industrial emissions. 



One gigaton equals one billion metric tons, and the companies’ reserves would release 673 gigatons of carbon dioxide if burned.



The team asked whether trees alone could sponge up that mass before 2050. They calculated how much carbon a newly planted hectare can absorb, then scaled that to the entire fossil portfolio sitting underground. 



The answer was 24.75 million square kilometers, roughly 15 percent of Earth’s land surface.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-scale-of-the-problem">The scale of the problem</h2>



Turning that much ground into forest would match the 9.35 million‑square‑mile footprint of North America. Converting it would mean uprooting farms, towns, and existing ecosystems on every continent except Antarctica.



Even if space were found, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-forests-rose-again-after-the-planets-most-extreme-extinction/">trees</a> would need decades to reach maturity, during which the carbon budget for staying below 1.5 °C keeps shrinking. 



The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change puts the remaining global <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3/chapter/technical-summary/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon budget</a> at roughly 400 gigatons far less than what Big Oil alone could emit.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-afforestation-offsets-cost-more-than-oil-profits">Afforestation offsets cost more than oil profits</h2>



To see whether firms could simply pay for offsets, the researchers applied the 2022 average European Union carbon‑market price of just over €80 (about $90) per ton, a figure confirmed by market analysts. 



At that level, 95 percent of the companies would show a negative “net environmental valuation.”



“It would be more profitable to leave the fuel in the ground than to extract and offset it later,” the researchers concluded. 



They looked at cheaper forestry credits, around $16 per ton, and cutting‑edge direct air‑capture technology, near $1,000 per ton. The first leaves two‑thirds of firms underwater, and the second sinks them all. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-forests-aren-t-free">Why forests aren’t free</h2>



Today, Earth’s woods and soils already soak up about <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/earth/climate-change/examining-the-viability-of-planting-trees-to-help-mitigate-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">30 percent</a> of the carbon we emit each year. Expanding that sink sounds simple, but biology argues back. 



Fast‑growing plantations guzzle water and nutrients, push out biodiversity, and, in dry or fire‑prone regions, can even raise local temperatures.



Most of the land earmarked in the calculation is now cropland or rangeland. Replacing it would tighten food supplies and likely spike prices. 



Meanwhile, one lightning strike, drought, or beetle swarm can send centuries of stored carbon back into the sky in a single season.



Naef’s group tested a <a href="https://www.rff.org/publications/explainers/social-cost-carbon-101/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social cost of carbon</a> of $190 per ton, close to the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2023-12/epa_scghg_2023_report_final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Environmental Protection Agency</a>’s latest estimate. 



At that price, operating any major fossil company produces negative value for society, even before land, labor, or political hurdles are added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-afforestation-land-is-already-in-use">Afforestation land is already in use</h2>



Much of the land assumed to be available for afforestation is already claimed for food production, housing, or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-forests-helps-birds-and-humans-in-many-ways/">biodiversity</a> preservation. 



In many regions, open or unforested land is not “unused” but is crucial for pastoralists, indigenous communities, or native species. 



Treating this land as expendable undercuts existing ecosystems and social systems that depend on it.



Global land competition is intensifying as population grows and diets change. Turning millions of square miles into carbon sinks means competing directly with agriculture, which could threaten food security worldwide. 



Even if afforestation were technically feasible, the political and ethical tradeoffs make it an unworkable solution at scale.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emissions-reductions-must-take-priority">Emissions reductions must take priority </h2>



Offsetting programs have gained popularity among corporations aiming to appear climate-conscious without changing their core operations. But many of these schemes lack transparency, consistency, or verification. 



Critics argue they allow continued pollution under the guise of future cleanup, which often never materializes or is exaggerated in impact.



Naef and colleagues warn that relying on afforestation as a main climate tool distracts from the immediate need to reduce fossil fuel use. They emphasize that while trees can help, carbon math alone shows the gap is too wide. 



Emission reductions must take priority if there's any chance of meeting international climate targets.



Direct air‑capture still matters, and real forest restoration still protects wildlife. But the study shows those tools cannot shoulder the job of burying every barrel’s worth of carbon. 



Keeping proven reserves in the ground costs nothing, buys time for cleaner energy, and avoids an impossible tree‑planting bill.

Creating forests can't realistically cancel out fossil fuel emissions

Clouds help cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight. But now, storm cloud zones are shrinking. This shrinkage is letting in more solar radiation. 



A new study, led by NASA and including Monash researchers, shows that this is the biggest reason for Earth's recent heat rise. The study appears in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.



Storm cloud zones in the tropics and midlatitudes have contracted by 1.5% to 3% per decade. These zones used to reflect a lot of sunlight back into space. Their disappearance is allowing more heat to reach the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fading-clouds-are-accelerating-climate-change/">surface</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shrinking-clouds-let-earth-absorb-more-heat">Shrinking clouds let earth absorb more heat</h2>



Christian Jakob, a professor at <a href="https://www.monash.edu/">Monash University</a>, noted that this finding clarifies how much extra solar energy Earth now absorbs. “We’ve long known that changes in atmospheric circulation are affecting clouds,” he said.



“For the first time, we now have research showing those <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/massive-star-forming-hydrogen-cloud-discovered-surprisingly-close-to-earth-eos/">shifts</a> are already driving major changes in how much energy the Earth absorbs.”



This research helps explain the heat anomalies of recent years, including the extreme warmth of 2023.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-satellite-clues-from-decades-of-data">Satellite clues from decades of data</h2>



The experts used satellite data from 2001 to 2023. They measured two <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthcare-satellite-will-reveal-the-climate-effects-of-clouds/">cloud</a> features: total cloud cover (TCC) and shortwave cloud radiative effect (SWCRE). SWCRE measures how much sunlight clouds bounce back. 



A more negative number means more sunlight is being reflected. But scientists found that zones of strong SWCRE are shrinking. 



In high latitudes, these zones contracted by up to 1.32% per decade. In the tropics, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) narrowed. Stratocumulus cloud regions also shrank.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-from-cloud-retreat-to-heat-gain">From cloud retreat to heat gain</h2>



The result of all this: more warming. The total increase in absorbed solar energy was about 0.45 W/m² per decade. Of this, 0.37 W/m² comes from the shrinking cloud zones. 



The changes were strongest in high-latitude storm tracks and the tropical ITCZ. Even small reductions in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fire-and-ice-volcanic-ash-plays-a-surprising-role-in-cloud-formation/">cloudy</a> area had large effects on Earth's heat budget. 



The study shows most warming came from cloud area loss, not changes within the clouds themselves.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-winds-make-storm-clouds-shrink">Winds make storm clouds shrink</h2>



Why are storm clouds shrinking? It’s mostly due to global wind pattern changes. The Hadley cell is widening. Jet streams are shifting toward the poles. The ITCZ is narrowing. These trends match what climate models predict for a warming planet.



The researchers also found that high-latitude storm <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/clouds-also-fuel-arctic-warming-not-just-carbon-emissions/">clouds</a> are retreating because of the warming-driven shift in jet streams. This creates fewer clouds in key cooling zones. 



“It’s an important piece in the puzzle of understanding the extraordinary recent warming we observed, and a wake-up call for urgent climate action,” Jakob notes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-local-factors-also-shrink-clouds">Local factors also shrink clouds</h2>



Besides circulation shifts, cloud changes also arise from local factors. These include fewer aerosols from ships, which once helped clouds reflect more sunlight. 



Changes in cloud types and altitudes also matter. In the tropics, these effects added 0.21 W/m² per decade to the warming.



In contrast, polar regions showed some minor cooling due to increased cloud reflection in cold clouds. But the big picture is clear: cloud zone shrinkage is doing most of the damage.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-cooperation-and-local-weather-shifts">Global cooperation and local weather shifts</h2>



Professor Jakob warned about the dangers of reducing science funding. “If you want to understand the climate crisis, and prepare for its impacts, you need this kind of data and this kind of analysis,” he said.



Jakob urged a shift in focus - from climate change averages to daily weather impacts. “Our mission is to understand how Australia and the world’s weather is being reshaped by a warming climate,” he said.



“Our goal is to provide the knowledge and tools needed to help governments, businesses and communities prepare for what lies ahead.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clouds-are-changing-fast">Clouds are changing fast</h2>



Earth is losing some of its protective cloud shield. The shrinking of storm cloud zones is now the top driver of increased solar heat absorption. 



This change isn’t gradual. It’s already happening. And it’s amplifying warming faster than expected.



That means climate action must respond not only to emissions, but also to how weather patterns are shifting around the globe.

Clouds are shrinking and making the Earth hotter

Clouds help cool the Earth by reflecting sunlight. But now,...

For over 100 years, the North Atlantic has hosted an anomaly. South of Greenland lies a patch of cool ocean water. This region, called the North Atlantic Warming Hole (NAWH), defies global warming. 



Scientists long debated its cause. A new study now shows that the weakening of a vital <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-ocean-current-system-will-weaken-but-is-unlikely-to-collapse/">ocean</a> current - the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) - explains it best.



“People have been asking why this cold spot exists,” said climate scientist Wei Liu. “We found the most likely answer is a weakening AMOC.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-source-of-the-atlantic-cold-spot">Source of the Atlantic cold spot</h2>



The AMOC moves warm, salty water northward and cooler water southward. This system shapes climate across continents. When it slows, less heat and salt reach the north. The result? Cooler, fresher waters south of Greenland.



Liu and Kai-Yuan Li from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California Riverside</a> studied temperature and salinity data spanning a century. 



Direct AMOC measurements only cover 20 years. But using six long-term sea surface temperature (SST) datasets and three salinity datasets, the researchers built a much clearer picture. They also tested 94 global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/collapse-of-main-atlantic-ocean-circulaton-current-amoc-is-already-happening/">climate</a> models.



Only models simulating a slowing AMOC recreated the observed North Atlantic cooling. These models showed trends of up to −0.3 °C per century (about −0.54 °F per century), matching the real-world pattern known as the NAWH.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clear-signs-of-amoc-weakening">Clear signs of AMOC weakening</h2>



The team defined <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weakening-ocean-currents-provide-a-rainfall-boost-in-the-amazon/">AMOC</a> fingerprints using a dipole pattern: cooling in the subpolar gyre (south of Greenland) and warming near the Gulf Stream. This contrast, visible in SST and salinity (SSS), offers a reliable way to track AMOC strength.



From the observations, they estimated that the AMOC weakened by −1.01 to −2.97 Sverdrups per century from 1900 to 2005. 



A single Sverdrup equals one million cubic meters of water per second. That’s a massive loss of energy transport across the Atlantic.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-atlantic-cold-spot-reaches-the-deep-ocean">Atlantic cold spot reaches the deep ocean</h2>



The cooling and freshening do not stop at the surface. The study reveals that subsurface waters down to 3,000 meters also exhibit clear signs of this trend. 



The vertical profile shows cooling and freshening at depth, confirming that AMOC’s slowdown affects the entire ocean column.



Model comparisons between weakened and strengthened AMOC simulations highlighted another key point. 



A slower <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-warming-could-reduce-ocean-currents-amoc-and-cause-massive-flooding-in-the-us/">AMOC</a> causes a heat transport gap - less warm water moves northward. This creates a cold zone between 40°N and 65°N, which matches the NAWH location.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-amoc-slowdown-confirmed">Long-term AMOC slowdown confirmed</h2>



Salt transport in the North Atlantic also changes. A weakened AMOC means more freshwater sits at the surface. This freshening was strongest across the NAWH and extended to the Labrador Sea. 



While observations showed some salinity increase in the Labrador Sea, models still closely captured the broad trend.



Both the SST- and SSS-based fingerprint indices (FPISST and FPISSS) showed strong correlation with AMOC weakening. These patterns help researchers verify the slowdown, even without direct current measurements.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-other-theories-on-north-atlantic-cold-spot">Other theories on North Atlantic cold spot</h2>



Some past theories suggested the NAWH came from changes in wind patterns or reduced air pollution. These theories were tested in the new study. 



In experiments with slab-ocean models (which isolate atmospheric effects), the cooling did not appear. Only in fully coupled models - with real ocean circulation - did the NAWH form.



“We tested CO₂ experiments in slab-ocean and fully coupled models,” the authors wrote. “Only the fully coupled models with a weakening AMOC showed the cooling feature.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-broader-climate-concern">A broader climate concern</h2>



The South Greenland anomaly in the North Atlantic affects more than just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/have-global-temperatures-breached-the-1-5c-threshold/">temperature</a>. It reshapes the jet stream and alters weather across Europe and North America.



The cold zone also threatens marine ecosystems. Many fish species rely on certain salinity and temperature levels. Disruptions could shift where they live, breed, and migrate.



“Our results show that only the models with a weakening AMOC get it right. That means many of the recent models are too sensitive to aerosol changes, and less accurate for this region,” noted Liu.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-ahead-with-better-tools">Looking ahead with better tools</h2>



This study helps improve <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/looking-to-earths-ancient-climate-to-predict-our-future/">climate forecasts</a> by identifying the most realistic models. It also highlights the value of indirect evidence. Fingerprints built from ocean temperature and salinity can track changes even when direct measurements are sparse.



“We don’t have direct observations going back a century, but the temperature and salinity data let us see the past clearly,” Li noted.



If greenhouse gas emissions keep rising, the AMOC may continue to weaken. That means more pronounced cooling near Greenland and stronger climate impacts across Europe.



By understanding this cold patch, scientists gain a clearer view of Earth's <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-experts-predict-global-warming-will-far-exceed-paris-goals/">climate system</a>. The North Atlantic Warming Hole is not a mystery anymore. It’s a sign - quiet, persistent, and measurable - of a changing ocean current that affects us all.

A major international study confirms this shift. Artificial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-artificial-light-can-boost-coral-reef-recovery/">lighting</a> lengthens the growing season in urban areas more than heat does.



The researchers analyzed satellite data from 428 cities across the Northern Hemisphere between 2014 and 2020. They found urban plant growth begins earlier and ends later than in nearby rural areas.

Urban heat islands form when buildings and roads trap warmth. Cities also get brighter each year. 



Artificial light at night (ALAN) has grown nearly 10% annually over the last decade. Both heat and light alter plant growing seasons, but this study reveals light matters more.



"ALAN is a critical driver of vegetation dynamics in cities," noted the researchers. The artificial light changes how plants respond to seasonal cues, especially during autumn when natural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/artificial-light-disrupts-honeybee-sleep-patterns/">light</a> typically declines.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-urban-plants-grow-earlier-and-stay-green">Urban plants grow earlier and stay green</h2>



Across <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/light-pollution-skyglow-fuels-toxic-algae-and-alters-carbon-cycle-in-lakes/">cities</a>, the growing season starts 12.6 days earlier and ends 11.2 days later than rural zones. That is over three weeks of extended green time.



Spring ALAN levels increased exponentially from rural to urban centers. In contrast, temperature rose more gradually. Spring light intensity climbed from 3.1 to 53.3 nW cm² sr⁻¹ across city gradients. Autumn changes followed similar trends.



The study revealed a strong correlation between higher ALAN and delayed leaf drop. EOS (end of season) was more strongly influenced by ALAN than by temperature in nearly half the cities examined.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-continents-and-climates-respond-differently">Continents and climates respond differently</h2>



Europe experienced the earliest start to spring, with Asia following and North America close behind.



Despite being the brightest overall, North American cities showed the smallest shift in plant growing season timing. This suggests that more light does not always mean bigger changes in plant behavior.



Different Köppen climate zones responded in varied ways to artificial light. ALAN had the strongest effect in cold climates without dry seasons and in temperate zones with dry summers or winters. 



In these areas, artificial light advanced spring plant growth more than rising temperatures did. This shows that light can override the usual seasonal cues driven by warmth.



However, end-of-season (EOS) patterns were more consistent. In nearly every climate, artificial light delayed the end of plant activity. 



Even in warmer or drier zones, nighttime light caused plants to hold onto their leaves longer. This widespread delay in senescence shows how deeply city lighting alters natural plant rhythms.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-latitude-and-light-sensitivity">Latitude and light sensitivity</h2>



The farther north a city lies, the more its plants respond to artificial light. In higher latitudes, the natural variation in daylight is more extreme. This makes plants especially sensitive to artificial night lighting.



“ALAN acts as an artificial extension of natural daylight,” wrote the study authors. In high-latitude cities, it disrupts the signals that tell plants when to shed their leaves.



Temperature still plays a role, especially in triggering spring growth. But ALAN’s influence on leaf fall in autumn now appears stronger and more widespread.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-led-light-shifts-plant-timing-in-cities">LED light shifts plant timing in cities</h2>



The shift from sodium lamps to white LEDs has intensified ALAN effects. LEDs emit more blue light, which plants detect through specialized receptors. That may change how plants time their seasonal shifts.



“Plants sense different wavelengths through different photoreceptor pathways,” noted the researchers. 



However, most satellites cannot yet detect blue light well. Future monitoring will need to include this spectral range to track ecological impacts accurately.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-beyond-greener-cities">Looking beyond greener cities</h2>



Longer growing seasons may sound beneficial. Trees may take up more carbon and offer better shade. But there are downsides. A longer leaf season raises the risk of frost damage, mismatched plant-pollinator cycles, and more severe allergy seasons.



City planners face a complex challenge. Lighting designs must meet safety needs but avoid harming plants. 



A smarter urban lighting strategy could reduce ecosystem disruptions while maintaining livable cities. Urban ecology is shifting under our feet and our lights. It is time we took notice.

Plants that live in cities have much longer growing seasons now

Cities are becoming more than just human-built environments. Their light...

Volcanic islands, such as those in Hawaii and the Caribbean, are often fringed by coral reefs - ring-shaped structures that closely follow the shoreline. These reefs aren’t continuous. They contain natural gaps known as reef passes, which serve as channels connecting the sheltered lagoon with the open ocean.



Water and nutrients move through these gaps, keeping the ecosystem alive and balanced. Reef passes are critical for circulation, helping flush out freshwater and bring in nutrients that coral reefs rely on to survive.



Until now, no one had pinned down how these reef passes form. But researchers from <a href="https://www.mit.edu/">MIT</a> and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have found something surprising.



These coral gateways line up with where <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alaskas-rivers-are-rusting-and-the-changes-are-visible-from-space/">rivers</a> exit the island’s coast. The study shows that island rivers are not just bystanders. They help carve these passages through the coral itself.



“The results of this study help us to understand how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-grazing-halos-and-parrotfish-reveal-about-coral-reef-health/">health of coral reefs</a> depends on the islands they surround,” said Professor Taylor Perron.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rivers-offer-benefits-for-reefs">Rivers offer benefits for reefs</h2>



Megan Gillen, the study's lead author, is a graduate student in the MIT-WHOI Joint Program in Oceanography.



“A lot of discussion around rivers and their impact on reefs today has been negative because of human impact and the effects of agricultural practices,” said Gillen.



“This study shows the potential long-term benefits rivers can have on reefs, which I hope reshapes the paradigm and highlights the natural state of rivers interacting with reefs.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-observing-coral-reefs-from-space">Observing coral reefs from space</h2>



The team focused on the Society Islands, a group of volcanic islands in the South Pacific that includes Tahiti and Bora Bora. 



With fieldwork off the table during the pandemic, the researchers turned to satellite imagery. Scanning the islands on Google Earth, they noticed something odd.



“The islands in this chain have these iconic, beautiful reefs, and we kept noticing these reef passes that seemed to align with deeply embayed portions of the coastline,” noted Gillen. “We started asking ourselves, is there a correlation here?”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-mystery-of-reef-passes">The mystery of reef passes</h2>



From above, the coral reefs looked like cracked rings. The breaks - reef passes - seemed to fall in line with old river valleys that cut deep into the coastline. 



These depressions are where rivers drain out to the sea. Gillen began wondering: are the rivers responsible for these coral gaps?



“People have examined the flow through reef passes to understand how ocean waves and seawater circulate in and out of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coastal-lagoons-have-high-loads-of-microplastics/">lagoons</a>, but there have been no claims of how these passes are formed,” said Gillen. 



“Reef pass formation has been mentioned infrequently in the literature, and people haven’t explored it in depth.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-big-rivers-form-the-reef-passes">Big rivers form the reef passes</h2>



To test the idea, the team used radar data from NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. The mission mapped about 80% of the Earth's surface back in 1999. 



Using this topographic data, the researchers traced out the island river basins and pinpointed every reef pass on the surrounding coral reefs.



Then they “unwrapped” the islands and their reefs into straight lines. This made it easier to compare locations directly. And the pattern was clear.



“Looking at the unwrapped shorelines, we find a significant correlation in the spatial relationship between these big river basins and where the passes line up,” said Gillen. 



“So we can say that statistically, the alignment of reef passes and large rivers does not seem random. The big rivers have a role in forming passes.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-rivers-shape-coral-reefs">How rivers shape coral reefs</h2>



The researchers propose two ways that rivers could shape coral: reef incision and reef encroachment.



Reef incision happens when sea levels are low and rivers can flow directly over exposed reef. The flowing water and sediment grind away at the coral over time, cutting a channel into the reef.



Reef encroachment is the opposite. When <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/coral-growth-cannot-keep-pace-with-rising-sea-levels/">sea levels rise</a>, coral reefs grow upward and move inward, toward the island, chasing sunlight. But if they grow into an old riverbed that’s too deep for sunlight, the coral can’t survive there. It dies off, leaving a gap - a reef pass.



Together, reef incision and reef encroachment likely shaped the reef passes we see today over many sea-level cycles.



“We don’t think it’s an either/or situation,” said Gillen. “Reef incision occurs when sea levels fall, and reef encroachment happens when sea levels rise."



"Both mechanisms, occurring over dozens of cycles of sea-level rise and island evolution, are likely responsible for the formation and maintenance of reef passes over time.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-older-islands-tell-us">What older islands tell us</h2>



The researchers also noticed a trend across different islands. Younger islands had more reef passes that were close together. Older islands had fewer, more spread out.



Over time, volcanic islands sink. As they do, there’s less land to catch rain and form strong rivers. Without that flow, the reef passes begin to close, shaped instead by ocean waves.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-we-build-better-reefs">Can we build better reefs?</h2>



This study does more than explain a pattern in coral reefs. It opens the door to new ideas for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protecting-coral-reefs-is-a-matter-of-humans-rights/">reef conservation</a>.



Gillen is now exploring whether engineered flows - man-made systems that mimic rivers - could help create reef passes where none exist. These artificial channels could boost circulation and help coral reefs stay healthy in places where natural rivers are absent.



“Part of me wonders: If you had a more persistent flow, in places where you don’t naturally have rivers interacting with the reef, could that potentially be a way to increase health, by incorporating that river component back into the reef system? That’s something we’re thinking about."

How island rivers quietly shape coral reefs

When Earth was locked in ice, where did life hide out? New research suggests that shallow, sunlit meltwater ponds - small pools on top of ancient ice sheets - may have given early complex life forms a place to survive. 



These above-ice pockets could have acted as safe zones during one of the coldest, harshest chapters in our planet’s history.



The study was conducted by an international team of scientists led by the <a href="https://www.mit.edu/">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT). The research was focused on a time known as "Snowball Earth," when much of the planet was encased in ice between 635 and 720 million years ago.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meltwater-ponds-sheltered-life">Meltwater ponds sheltered life </h2>



During <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/snowball-earth-event-set-the-stage-for-complex-life/">Snowball Earth</a>, temperatures dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius. Ice sheets likely covered land and sea - possibly even near the equator. Still, life managed to survive.



The question of how life persisted has challenged scientists for years. Some have suggested that organisms could have survived in places like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/deep-sea-hydrothermal-vents-provide-clues-about-the-origin-of-life/">hydrothermal vents</a> deep in the ocean, under the ice, or even in small areas of open water. 



But the MIT-led team wanted to explore a different idea: what if meltwater ponds on the surface of the ice were key?



Fatima Husain, lead author of the study, is a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences.



“We’ve shown that meltwater ponds are valid candidates for where early eukaryotes could have sheltered during these planet-wide <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/frozen-earth-global-glaciation-event-lasted-4-million-years/">glaciation events</a>,” said Husain. "This shows us that diversity is present and possible in these sorts of settings. It’s really a story of life’s resilience.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-clues-found-in-antarctica">Clues found in Antarctica</h2>



To test this theory, the researchers turned to modern Antarctica. Today, you can find shallow <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/scientists-are-spotting-meltwater-lakes-more-frequently-in-greenland/">meltwater</a> ponds scattered along the McMurdo Ice Shelf. 



The ponds form when sunlight warms dust-laden patches of ice, melting the surface just enough to create small pools. These conditions are likely similar to what existed near the equator during Snowball Earth.



In 2018, MIT’s Roger Summons and colleagues collected samples from several of these ponds, first described over a century ago as “dirty ice.” 



The team found thick microbial mats lining the pond bottoms - sticky layers built up over years, made mostly of photosynthetic cyanobacteria. But that wasn’t all they found.



The researchers also uncovered signs of more complex life. Not just <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteria-pass-down-memories-to-future-generations/">bacteria</a>, but eukaryotes - organisms with a cell nucleus - were present in every pond they studied.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hidden-life-in-meltwater-ponds">Hidden life in meltwater ponds</h2>



To confirm the presence of eukaryotes, the scientists used two techniques. First, they looked for sterols, lipid molecules that only eukaryotes produce. Then, they analyzed ribosomal RNA, which acts as a genetic fingerprint. 



These tools helped them identify not just single types of organisms, but entire communities - algae, protists, microscopic animals - thriving in each pond.



“No two ponds were alike,” said Husain. “There are repeating casts of characters, but they’re present in different abundances. And we found diverse assemblages of eukaryotes from all the major groups in all the ponds studied. These eukaryotes are the descendants of the eukaryotes that survived the Snowball Earth.”



One surprising finding: the salinity of a pond had a major impact on what lived there. Saltier ponds hosted similar communities, while fresher ponds had more variation.



“This really highlights that meltwater ponds during Snowball Earth could have served as above-ice oases that nurtured the eukaryotic life that enabled the diversification and proliferation of complex life - including us - later on,” said Husain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meltwater-ponds-hold-clues-to-ancient-life">Meltwater ponds hold clues to ancient life</h2>



There’s still debate about what Snowball Earth was really like - whether it was a completely frozen ball or more of a "slushball" with thin patches of open ocean. But the evidence from Antarctica shows that today’s meltwater ponds can serve as useful analogs for ancient environments.



“We’re interested in understanding the foundations of complex life on Earth. We see evidence for eukaryotes before and after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/most-complete-record-of-snowball-earth-found-in-rock-formation/">Cryogenian</a> in the fossil record, but we largely lack direct evidence of where they may have lived during,” explained Husain. 



“The great part of this mystery is, we know life survived. We’re just trying to understand how and where.” And meltwater ponds, it turns out, might be a big part of that answer.



“There are many hypotheses for where life could have survived and sheltered during the Cryogenian, but we don’t have excellent analogs for all of them,” noted Husain. 



“Above-ice meltwater ponds occur on Earth today and are accessible, giving us the opportunity to really focus in on the eukaryotes which live in these environments.”



By studying one of the coldest places on Earth today, scientists are piecing together how life managed to hang on through one of the planet’s darkest and coldest times.

Life survived when Earth was covered in ice - but how?

When Earth was locked in ice, where did life hide...

Peatlands across the northern Arctic are spreading as the climate warms, offering a temporary boost in natural carbon storage. This new growth, forming at the edges of existing peat bogs, could help slow the pace of climate change - at least in the short term.



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a>, with partners in Canada, Finland, and Norway, used satellite images, drone footage, and peat cores to track 16 sites across the European and Canadian Arctic.



By comparing imagery from 1985–1995 with the last two decades, they found clear signs of “peak-summer greening” at most sites - evidence that peat-forming mosses are steadily spreading outward. 



The most dramatic changes were seen in regions that have warmed the most, like Svalbard.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-rapidly-warming-north">A rapidly warming North</h2>



“The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-has-warmed-four-times-faster-than-the-rest-of-the-planet/">Arctic has warmed</a> faster than the rest of the planet, with average temperatures increasing by about 4 °C in the last four decades,” said Dr. Katherine Crichton.



Warmer summers mean longer growing seasons and thicker plant cover. According to Dr. Crichton, this has improved growing conditions for plants, causing "greening" of the Arctic. 



"We wanted to identify if this greening could be from peatland plant communities. We know from paleo records that warmer periods in Earth’s history led to more carbon being stored in peatlands."



"Our new study puts these pieces together to examine whether our warming climate is causing peatland expansion - and we find strong evidence that it is.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peatlands-small-area-huge-impact">Peatlands: Small area, huge impact</h2>



Peat covers about three percent of Earth’s surface yet stores roughly 600 billion tons of carbon - more than all of the world’s trees combined.



“Our findings suggest Arctic peatlands are an increasingly important <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-carbon-sinks-are-threatened-by-droughts-and-heat-waves/">natural carbon sink</a>, at least in the near term,” said Professor Karen Anderson of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute.



“But if <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-may-stop-absorbing-carbon-if-temperatures-continue-to-rise/">temperatures continue to rise</a>, we are likely to see changes in rainfall, and we are not sure how sustainable new or existing peatlands will be. Plus we could see increases of methane emissions at the same time."



"So - while our study gives us some positive news - it does not detract from the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilise our climate.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-years-of-surveying-arctic-peatlands">Years of surveying Arctic peatlands </h2>



The project has been in motion for more than a decade. It began with two small pilot studies - a peat-core survey in Canada and Finland and a drone-mapping test of remote sensing.



Funding was hard to come by. The team’s first grant bid went in back in 2013. A rejection followed in 2015, then two more in 2016. The green light finally came in 2018, and full fieldwork started the following summer.



Early trips set the tone. Dr. Crichton scoured Google Earth Engine for possible study sites. Professor Angela Gallego-Sala headed north to Svalbard, where the safety briefing included how to avoid hungry <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/disney-documents-the-plight-of-polar-bears-in-remarkable-film/">polar bears</a>.



COVID-19 struck just as momentum built. “I was still at my desk using Google Earth Engine,” said Dr. Crichton. “Lockdown didn’t make any difference to the work I was doing.” Field teams stayed home, but mapping and permit work continued online.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fieldwork-in-unfamiliar-territory">Fieldwork in unfamiliar territory </h2>



Once borders reopened, the researchers headed to Bylot Island in 2021–22. The camp was basic; the only “shower” was a half-frozen lake. “It was light all the time. You could do fieldwork all day long and all night if you wanted to.” 



Helicopters ferried the group to nameless tundra clearings. Pilots needed labels for pickup points, so patches of moss earned nicknames like “Glacial Nirvana” and “Angela’s Paradise.” Each core came up dark and wet, holding a record of centuries of stored carbon.



Farther west, an Inuit guide at Salluit led the team across peatlands teeming with black bears and reindeer. Each evening they caught fish and mussels for supper. 



One morning, the guide shrugged at their mapped route: “You can go wherever you want.” That freedom left the crew - and their canoe - stranded on a sandbar at low tide. 



“We pushed it a long way through the sand,” Professor Gallego-Sala said. “It was pretty tough - but it was also hilarious, and we managed to get it out.”



“Meanwhile, I’m still sat at my computer by the way,” said Dr Crichton, laughing. Her satellite work linked every muddy core to long-term imagery, confirming that the edges of Arctic peatlands are edging outward as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-struggling-to-breathe-store-co2-hotter-climate/">climate warms</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peatlands-are-storing-carbon-for-now">Peatlands are storing carbon - for now</h2>



“Going out for fieldwork is a short time in comparison to the rest of the work. There is lots of lab work to analyze the samples, then extensive data analysis before the findings can be written into a published paper.”



The study links local plant changes to a global climate trend. The team also warns that, under continued warming, today’s expanding peatlands may flip and release their stored carbon. 



Until then, the slow creep of moss across Arctic ground remains one small buffer against rising greenhouse gases.

Arctic peatlands are spreading as temperatures rise

Peatlands across the northern Arctic are spreading as the climate...

Oceanographers have long used a simple rule of thumb: green water teems with microscopic life, while ultramarine blue usually signals relative scarcity.



A fresh analysis of two decades of satellite images suggests that the dividing line between those hues is on the move. 



Scientists have determined that open-ocean waters are steadily <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-ocean-turning-green-thanks-to-climate-change-algae-blooms/">greening</a> at high latitudes and becoming bluer in the tropics and subtropics.



Because the tint of seawater tracks chlorophyll - the pigment that phytoplankton use for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/revealing-the-secrets-of-photosynthesis-through-pep/">photosynthesis</a> - the trend hints at a large-scale rearrangement of life at the base of marine food webs.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-our-oceans-shifting-color-code">Our oceans' shifting color code</h2>



The research team, led by <a href="https://duke.edu/">Duke University</a> post-doctoral scholar Haipeng Zhao, sifted through global data captured from 2003 to 2022. The data came from <a href="https://aqua.nasa.gov/modis">NASA’s MODIS-Aqua</a> instrument, which scans the planet every two days.



Each pass measures subtle shifts in reflected light that reveal chlorophyll concentration right at the surface. To avoid the optical noise of sediment-rich coastlines, the researchers focused exclusively on the open ocean.



“In the ocean, what we see based on satellite measurements is that the tropics and the subtropics are generally losing chlorophyll, whereas the polar regions - the high-latitude regions - are greening,” Zhao said.



In practical terms, that means less plankton in warm, blue waters flanking the equator and a rising abundance in polar waters.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inventive-math-for-a-noisy-planet"><a></a>Inventive math for a noisy planet</h2>



Working with satellite imagery always involves gaps - patches of cloud, sensor dropouts, differences in daylight.



To tease out a coherent story, Zhao and colleagues borrowed a pair of statistical tools more often used to study household incomes: the Lorenz curve and the Gini coefficient.



Lead investigator Nicolas Cassar, a scientist at Duke, explained the leap from economics to oceanography: “We borrowed concepts from economics called the Lorenz curve and the Gini index, which together show how wealth is distributed in a society.



“We thought, let’s apply these to see whether the proportion of the ocean that holds the most chlorophyll has changed over time.”



The result? Over twenty years, the ‘chlorophyll rich’ zones - already green - grew greener, particularly in the northern hemisphere, while blue regions lost even more pigment. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-testing-the-climate-connections"><a></a>Testing the climate connections</h2>



Greener poles and bluer tropics might sound like a straightforward fingerprint of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-is-accelerating-beyond-control-as-co2-levels-rise/">global warming</a>. However, the study stops short of that conclusion.



The authors compared chlorophyll shifts with four environmental variables: sea-surface water temperature, wind speed, light availability, and mixed-layer depth. 



Only warming tracked consistently with the observed color change; the others showed no strong association.



Even so, co-author Susan Lozier of <a href="https://www.gatech.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Georgia Tech</a> cautioned against a rush to label climate change the culprit. “The study period was too short to rule out the influence of recurring climate phenomena such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/el-nino-climate-shifts-date-back-250-million-years/">El Niño</a>,” Lozier said.



“Having measurements for the next several decades will be important for determining influences beyond climate oscillations.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-plankton-big-impact">Changing plankton, big impact</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/invisible-forest-of-phytoplankton-thrives-in-a-warming-climate/">Phytoplankton</a> do more than tint the waves. Through photosynthesis, they absorb carbon dioxide and convert it to organic matter, sequestering carbon when dead cells sink.



A poleward migration of productivity could rearrange that natural pump. Cassar notes that the geographic shift may decide how long that captured carbon remains out of circulation.



“If carbon sinks deeper or in places where water doesn’t resurface for a long time, it stays stored much longer. In contrast, shallow carbon can return to the atmosphere more quickly, reducing the effect of phytoplankton on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-storage-mystery-emerges-in-the-southern-ocean/">carbon storage</a>,” he said.



Food security is another concern. Many equatorial nations rely on rich fisheries sustained by plankton blooms. A steady drop in primary producers could disrupt the food web, reducing fish stocks vital to diets and economies.



“Phytoplankton are at the base of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oceans-twilight-zone-stabilizes-the-marine-food-chain/">marine food chain</a>. If they are reduced, then the upper levels of the food chain could also be impacted, which could mean a potential redistribution of fisheries,” Cassar warned.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-color-shift-continues">Ocean color shift continues</h2>



The study adds the open ocean to a list of Earth systems already showing poleward ecological drift. On land, satellite records have documented expanding forests in high latitudes and stressed vegetation in the subtropics. 



Now, with the ocean’s own chlorophyll belt shifting, researchers see a consistent planetary story unfolding.



Still, the authors emphasize that two decades are only an opening chapter. Longer records, deeper observations, and improved models of phytoplankton physiology are needed to predict the full ecological impact.



The ocean’s color shift signals change - green in high latitudes, blue near the equator - as ecosystems quietly reorganize. It silently tracks a significant re-ordering of marine life that could reshape climate feedbacks and global fisheries alike.

The work zeroes in on Tofino, a surfing town whose beaches and hotels fill with travelers year‑round. Researchers tested different warning strategies and found that machine learning might save more people than the rules emergency crews use today.



Earth‑science professor <a href="https://www.uwo.ca/earth/people/faculty/goda.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Katsuichiro Goda</a> at <a href="https://www.uwo.ca/sci/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Western University</a>, the <a href="https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/chairholders-titulaires/profile-eng.aspx?profileId=4507" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada Research Chair in Multi‑Hazard Risk Assessment</a>, led the project. 



He and his team compared traditional statistical models with newer random forest algorithms and neural network tools, checking how long officials can wait before pressing the alert button.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-minutes-matter">Why minutes matter</h2>



Evacuation drills show that even fit hikers need up to 17 minutes to climb from the waterfront to designated hills. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/strong-geomagnetic-solar-storm-alert-issued-auroras-expected-farther-south/">Alerts</a> that come too late jam the single highway out of town, trapping beachgoers behind stalled traffic.



Canada lacks a local catalog of historic tsunamis, so the study fed the computer thousands of simulated waveforms instead of real past events. 



The team discovered that performance swings wildly when the training set omits certain rupture styles, an uncertainty coastal planners rarely see in public briefings.



Adding synthetic events from <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.16344" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bayesian “digital twin” models</a> could close that gap, a method now being tested for the Cascadia coast.<a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.16344?utm_source=chatgpt.com">&nbsp;</a>

“When waiting times are too short, performances of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mega-tsunamis-triggered-by-earthquakes-could-wipe-part-of-us-off-the-map/">tsunami</a> early warning models vary significantly in terms of success,” said Goda. 



His favorite tool, the random forest, stacks dozens of mini decision trees, each weighing different seismic variables before voting on the safest moment to send a text <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/noaa-issues-a-severe-solar-storm-alert-with-auroras-expected-across-most-of-us/">alert</a>.



In test runs the algorithm beat multiple‑linear regression by about 15 percent on successful evacuations, echoing results from international trials that link seafloor gauges with machine‑learning forecasts.<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0098300423001279?utm_source=chatgpt.com">&nbsp;</a>

Japan’s 150‑station array beams pressure and seismic data along 3,600 miles of fiber‑optic cable, giving residents clearer information on wave height and arrival time.



Vancouver Island’s four‑sensor network, run by Ocean Networks Canada, limits early detection accuracy near tourist beaches like Cox Bay. 



Goda argues that even a modest expansion - one extra sensor for each 25 miles of coastline, would feed the hungry algorithms and shorten the interval between quake and alert.

Peak season pushes Tofino’s population from 2,500 to nearly 20,000, magnifying the challenge of moving people uphill before a wave arrives. 



Business owners note that a single false alarm can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in canceled bookings, so accuracy and trust go hand in hand.



Locals say the success of any alert system depends on whether people trust it. That trust hinges on understanding how and why evacuation orders are made. 



Workshops and school programs that explain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/650-foot-mega-tsunami-sends-seismic-waves-around-world-dickson-fjord-swot-mission/">tsunami</a> dynamics and how warnings work have helped raise awareness in Tofino. 



These efforts build a culture of readiness, making it more likely that people will act quickly when seconds count.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-toward-smarter-evacuations">Toward smarter evacuations</h2>



“We need to start using more AI models to get better results, but they are more data‑hungry and only perform better with more data,” explained Goda. 



The Western study suggests a counter‑intuitive tactic: wait a handful of extra seconds before issuing an alert so that messages include firmer wave‑height estimates.



Past disasters show why precision matters: surveys after the 2011 <a href="https://www.worldvision.org/disaster-relief-news-stories/2011-japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-facts" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tohoku tsunami</a> found that repeated false alarms made some residents less likely to flee small waves later.<a href="https://www.worldvision.org/disaster-relief-news-stories/2011-japan-earthquake-and-tsunami-facts?utm_source=chatgpt.com"> </a>



Next fall Goda's group will join residents during Tofino’s annual drill to test an AI‑assisted alert generator in real time. If the prototype works, the same code could guard resorts from Bali to Havana, shrinking the casualty gap between well‑monitored and overlooked coastlines.

New study proposes using AI to improve tsunami warnings in tourist areas

As climate change continues to reshape the environment, new research reveals that global food systems face serious long-term risks, with global crop yields likely to shrink even if farmers adapt. 



The findings suggest that every additional degree of warming could significantly reduce how much food the world can produce.



A new study estimates that for every 1°C increase in global temperatures, the average person’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/futuristic-food-supply-transforming-co2-into-protein/">food supply</a> could drop by 120 calories per day - roughly 4.4% of daily consumption.



“If the climate warms by three degrees, that’s basically like everyone on the planet giving up breakfast,” said co-author Solomon Hsiang, a professor of environmental social sciences at the <a href="https://sustainability.stanford.edu/">Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability</a>.



With more than 800 million people already suffering from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/food-insecurity-can-lead-to-heart-problems-later-in-life/">food insecurity</a>. The prospect of widespread food declines due to climate change is raising alarms among policymakers and humanitarian agencies.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-corn-belt-in-jeopardy"><a></a>The Corn Belt in jeopardy</h2>



The study points to the United States - particularly the Midwest - as one of the regions that could be hardest hit.



Andrew Hultgren is one of the lead authors of the study and an assistant professor at the <a href="https://illinois.edu/">University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign</a>. 



“Places in the Midwest that are really well-suited for present-day corn and soybean production just get hammered under a high warming future,” he said. "You do start to wonder if the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-the-u-s-corn-belt-influences-its-own-weather/">Corn Belt</a> is going to be the Corn Belt in the future.”



“This is basically like sending our agricultural profits overseas. We will be sending benefits to producers in Canada, Russia, China. Those are the winners, and we in the U.S. are the losers,” Hsiang added. “The longer we wait to reduce emissions, the more money we lose.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farming-fixes-only-go-so-far">Farming fixes only go so far</h2>



One of the study’s innovations is its realistic approach to adaptation. Rather than assuming farmers will either do nothing or respond perfectly to changes, the research team analyzed actual behavior in 12,000 regions across 55 countries.



They looked at yields and costs for six major staple crops: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-bread-wheat-gave-rise-to-civilization/">wheat</a>, corn, rice, soybeans, barley, and cassava.



In many areas, farmers already adjust practices - like planting dates, crop varieties, or fertilizer use - to cope with climate change. These changes help, but only to a point. “Any level of warming, even when accounting for adaptation, results in global output losses from agriculture,” Hultgren said.



The impacts are likely to be most severe for the world’s agricultural powerhouses and its poorest communities. Yield losses from staple crops could average 41% in the wealthiest regions and 28% in the lowest-income areas by the end of the century.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-picks-food-winners">Climate change picks food winners</h2>



One key finding is that climate change impacts crops differently. The study predicts a 50% chance that rice yields will rise, largely because rice benefits from warmer nights. However, the odds of decline by 2100 range from 70% to 90% for other major staples.



With the Earth already 1.5°C warmer than pre-industrial levels, the effects of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plant-roots-could-be-key-to-fighting-climate-change/">climate change</a> are no longer theoretical. Farmers are reporting erratic weather, longer droughts, and extreme heat, even in regions where modern inputs are readily available.



The models suggest that by 2100, global yields could fall 11% even if emissions drop to net zero, and by 24% if emissions continue to climb. The outlook for 2050 is not much better, with an estimated 8% reduction in yields regardless of emissions changes.



“If we ignore those long-run damages, we assign an economic value of zero to them, and that is clearly wrong,” Hultgren said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-farming-needs-support">Future farming needs support</h2>



Hsiang and Hultgren are now turning their focus to helping governments prepare. They’re working with the <a href="https://www.undp.org/">United Nations Development Program</a> to share the findings and identify communities most at risk.



“We’re focusing on how to make it so that this is not actually what our future looks like, even if we can’t get our act together on the emissions side,” Hsiang said.



Helping farmers adapt won’t be easy. In many regions, they lack access to basics like quality fertilizer or accurate weather forecasts. The team is developing tools to prioritize funding and resources where they can make the biggest impact.



For Hsiang, the message is clear: climate change is eroding one of agriculture’s most essential assets - stability.



“Farmers know how to maintain the soil, invest in infrastructure, repair the barn. But if you’re letting the climate depreciate, the rest of it is a waste. The land you leave to your kids will be good for something, but not for farming,” he concluded.

Hidden beneath the thick crust and scorching layers deep inside our Earth lies an immense stash of precious metals. Scientists have long believed these riches, which include gold and ruthenium, remain stuck near the core-mantle boundary, a zone that is about 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers) underground.



Yet new findings indicate some of these metals are edging upward through <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-exoplanet-glows-with-red-hot-molten-lava/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic</a> eruptions on islands like Hawaii. Observations show traces of ruthenium in Hawaiian lava that hint at a slow leak from Earth’s deepest interior. 



Many of these insights come from the work of Dr. Nils Messling from the <a href="https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/1.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Göttingen</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-core-metals-leak-into-earth-s-mantle">Core metals leak into Earth's mantle</h2>



“When the first results came in, we realized that we had literally struck gold! Our data confirmed that material from the core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth’s mantle above,” Dr. Messling enthused.



He and other researchers found chemical signatures in lava that suggest metals can migrate from the core to the surface.&nbsp;



This work aligns with earlier <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aal4179" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> indicating distinct isotopes of tungsten in certain volcanic rocks. By comparing precise <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/isotopic-ratio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">isotope ratios</a>, researchers noted anomalies that could only be explained by a hidden source deep within the planet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-molten-rock-helps-metals-travel-from-core">Molten rock helps metals travel from core</h2>



“Our findings not only show that the Earth’s core is not as isolated as previously assumed," explained <a href="https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/prof.+dr.+matthias+willbold/555303.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Matthias Willbold</a>, who is also from the University of Göttingen. 



"We can now also prove that huge volumes of super-heated mantle <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/harrat-khaybar-an-active-lava-field-in-saudi-arabia/">material</a>, several hundreds of quadrillion metric tons of rock, originate at the core-mantle boundary and rise to the Earth’s surface to form ocean islands like Hawaii,” 



Much of this evidence turned up in the melted rock that feeds Hawaii’s volcanoes.&nbsp;



These details offer a glimpse into how metals bound in the core could ride streams of <a href="https://www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi/10.1515/9781501508950-009/html?lang=en&amp;srsltid=AfmBOoqhuNQgWi4iHVPVUUcWu9n3wzjB2gLCgtxcXgkbiZ4n9hkZXkAc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">igneous fluids</a> into shallower regions. 



The transport is slow by human standards, yet even a tiny upward trickle over millions of years can transfer notable amounts of valuable elements.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leaked-metals-may-explain-surface-deposits">Leaked metals may explain surface deposits</h2>



Some gold and related metals used in modern technology may have once sat near the center of Earth. Precious metals are essential in fields like renewable energy, electronics, and medical devices.



The exact scale of this movement is still under investigation, but the possibility raises new questions about how mineral deposits form.



Experts also note that gold’s scarcity on the surface drove its historic status and monetary role. Understanding that traces of it seep into the mantle from far below may shift how scientists think about metal distribution and planetary evolution.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-s-inner-layers-exchange-materials">Earth’s inner layers exchange materials </h2>



Geologists once imagined the core as an isolated reservoir, shut off by thousands of miles of dense rock. Recent <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0012825219302636" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">data</a> challenge that notion and point to a slow but steady exchange of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-used-lava-tubes-for-homes-middle-east-saudi-arabia/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">materials</a>.



Whether these interactions have been ongoing since Earth’s earliest history remains an active research question.

Researchers emphasize that the current metal flow from the core is too small to spark any gold rush. They view it instead as a geological phenomenon that reveals how Earth’s inner processes keep shaping its surface in unexpected ways.

This means some of the metals rising through volcanic plumes today could be leftovers from the earliest days of Earth’s formation, which would offer rare insight into events that happened more than 4.5 billion years ago.

“Whether these processes that we observe today have also been operating in the past remains to be proven. Our findings open up an entirely new perspective on the evolution of the inner dynamics of our home planet,” remarked Dr. Messling.



Some scientists suspect that rock plumes carrying metals might have spurred geochemical differences in the oceans and atmosphere over long periods. 



They also consider how these plumes might influence volcanic island chains and the distribution of certain mineral deposits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-does-all-of-this-mean">What does all of this mean?</h2>



These findings don’t just matter to geologists. The presence of core-derived materials near the surface may affect how scientists model Earth’s heat flow, magnetic field generation, and deep mantle convection.



Beyond academic curiosity, the confirmation of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-sunken-oceans-discovered-between-earth-core-and-mantle/">core-mantle exchange</a> might one day influence how we locate and assess mineral resources, especially in volcanic regions that were previously overlooked.



The next steps involve pinpointing the rate at which metals flow from the core and how they rise through the Earth's mantle. 



Isotope measurements of other elements could provide even more clues about the composition of our planet’s inner zones.



These measurements will help researchers unravel deeper questions about planetary formation, ongoing exchange among layers, and the origins of metals that power crucial technologies. 



This knowledge might reshape long-held ideas and reveal new facets of Earth’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/iceland-eruption-blasted-lava-into-the-sky/">complexity</a>.

For years, thin plastic bags have been one of the most visible symbols of pollution - blowing through streets, choking marine wildlife, and breaking down into microplastics that contaminate ecosystems.



Now, a new study led by researchers at the <a href="https://www.udel.edu/">University of Delaware</a> and <a href="https://www.columbia.edu/">Columbia University</a> offers the clearest evidence yet that bag bans and fees do make a difference.



By analyzing data from tens of thousands of beach cleanups across the United States, the researchers found that jurisdictions with plastic bag laws saw a significant drop - between 25% and 47% - in plastic bags as a share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-bag-bans-have-drastically-reduced-ocean-pollution/">shoreline litter</a>.



The study is the first large-scale analysis to connect local policy with direct environmental outcomes, rather than relying on consumer checkout data alone.



“A lot of the previous economics literature on plastic bag policies has used checkout data at the store level,” said lead author Anna Papp, an environmental economist at Columbia. “We were excited to add to that a direct measurement of plastic litter on these shorelines.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-plastic-bag-problem">Understanding the plastic bag problem</h2>



Americans use billions of plastic bags each year - often for just minutes - yet these bags can take hundreds of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/environmental-policies-like-plastic-bag-bans-can-often-backfire/">years to break down</a>. 



Most end up in landfills, where they occupy space without decomposing, or escape into the environment, littering streets, waterways, and natural areas. 



Because they’re lightweight, they easily blow out of trash bins and landfills, creating widespread pollution that’s difficult and costly to clean up.



Once in the environment, plastic bags wreak havoc on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/filter-feeders-transform-microplastics-into-a-bigger-threat/">wildlife and ecosystems</a>. Animals, particularly marine life, often mistake them for food or become entangled in them, leading to injury or death. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-way-to-remove-microplastics-from-tap-water-home-faucet/">Microplastics</a> from degrading bags enter the food chain, raising concerns about long-term health effects in both wildlife and humans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-volunteers-help-map-plastic-waste">Volunteers help map plastic waste</h2>



The idea for the study began when co-author Kimberly Oremus, a marine policy expert at the University of Delaware, noticed that volunteers at Delaware beach cleanups were using an app called Clean Swell to track the litter they picked up.



The app feeds into the <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/about">Ocean Conservancy’s TIDES database</a>, which collects crowdsourced data from thousands of cleanups around the world.



“When we found the database that had information on different shoreline cleanups, we realized we could look at the composition of litter before and after a policy to see what effect it had,” Oremus said. “And then we could compare that to places that never got a plastic bag policy.”



With no federal ban on plastic bags in the United States, the researchers had a rich dataset of hundreds of local and state-level laws to compare. 



Between 2007 and 2023, they compiled over 600 distinct policies, allowing them to assess a wide range of regulations and their impacts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bans-and-fees-differ-greatly">Bans and fees differ greatly</h2>



While it might seem obvious that banning or taxing plastic bags would reduce litter, the magnitude of the effect surprised the team.



“There are so many pathways a bag can take from the checkout line at the store,” Oremus said. “It’s great to see a policy that works in such a clearly measurable way.”



Interestingly, the research also showed that some types of policies work better than others. 



State-level laws tended to have a stronger impact than city or county ordinances, and fees - perhaps counterintuitively - were more effective at reducing litter than outright bans.



Papp noted that this could be because fees encourage people to bring <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">reusable bags</a>, while bans may be more easily circumvented with loopholes or substitutions.



The researchers also observed that the policies had the biggest impact in areas that started with higher levels of plastic bag pollution, suggesting that public buy-in and visible local problems may help drive compliance and effectiveness.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-decline-slows-not-stops">Plastic decline slows, not stops</h2>



Despite the success of bag policies in reducing local litter, the overall share of plastic bags among shoreline trash is still increasing - just not as quickly in areas with bans or fees.



“We’re still getting more plastic bags on shorelines as a percentage of all the cleanup items over time,” noted Oremus. “It’s not eliminating the problem, it’s just making it grow more slowly.”



This sobering trend highlights the limitations of local policies when facing a global problem. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-production-increases-create-identical-plastic-pollution-increase/">Plastic production</a> and consumption continue to rise, and single-use items remain deeply embedded in supply chains and consumer habits.



“Ours is the first large-scale study to use hundreds of policies and tens of thousands of cleanups to look at their effects,” Papp said. “But it is important to keep in mind that this is a relative decrease in affected areas compared to areas without policies.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bags-are-just-the-start">Bags are just the start</h2>



With the <a href="https://www.unep.org/">United Nations Environment Program</a> preparing for its next round of negotiations on an international <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plastic-treaty-is-a-historic-opportunity-to-stop-a-human-health-crisis/">plastic treaty</a> in August 2025, the study offers timely evidence that policy can make a tangible difference.



“Overall, our findings do show that plastic bag policies are broadly effective in limiting litter along shorelines,” Papp said. Yet, plastic bags remain just one piece of the puzzle.



The researchers hope their work will help policymakers think beyond local or single-product solutions and push for more comprehensive strategies.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."

Mysterious "spoke season" captured on Saturn

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="http://www.ntu.edu.sg/">NTU Singapore</a> reveals that some plants can remove toxic heavy metals from soil.&nbsp;



The researchers analyzed samples of various tropical plant species to test for levels of heavy metals and metalloids. The study showed that there are existing plants with high levels of these contaminants, which means that these species are great candidates for drawing pollutants out of the soil.&nbsp;



Among the plants examined in the study, 12 species had accumulated several types of heavy metals and metalloids. These plants are widely available, including species that are native to Singapore.



“In a small nation like Singapore, land may be repurposed to support new development plans, so it is important that we have a green and sustainable way to remediate land that is contaminated," said Professor Lam Yeng Ming.



"We set out to uncover how to better make use of tropical plants to do phytoremediation and through advanced characterization techniques, we showed how some of these tropical plant species can be an environmentally friendly and literally a 'green' way to remove contaminants in soil."&nbsp;



"Phytoremediation also has benefits of cost effectiveness, simplicity of management, aesthetic advantages, and long-term applicability and sustainability. The strategy prevents erosion and metal leaching by stabilizing or accumulating heavy metals, so that helps reduce the risk of contaminant spread.”

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> describes why herbicides are not as effective in killing weeds anymore. In the 20th century, chemical companies developed thousands of herbicides. The most commonly used herbicide was glyphosate, which was introduced in 1974.



Over the past few decades, dozens of species of weeds have evolved resistance to glyphosate. Depending on the site of action, the part of the plant that an herbicide interacts with, weeds may even be resistant to herbicides that have not been developed yet.&nbsp;



With increasing resistance to glyphosate and other herbicides, weeds are - once again - becoming a major concern for farmers.&nbsp;

Weeds are becoming increasingly resistant to herbicides

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/">NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory</a> (JPL) describes a dust storm on Mars that was nearly twice the size of the United States. As the storm covered the southern hemisphere of the planet, some of NASA’s explorers had to delay their normal activities.



NASA’s Insight lander put itself in a "safe mode" for 11 days to conserve battery power because solar power was disrupted by the dust. The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter postponed flights until conditions improved.



"A fleet of NASA orbiters monitor Martian dust storms like this one and serve as lifelines to Earth by relaying data from the rovers and lander on the ground back to the team. This includes the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, MAVEN, and Odyssey," reports JPL.



"Dust storms like this recent one start close to the ground and are spread by wind as they rise – warming the cold Martian atmosphere."



The images in the video were captured by NASA’s Curiosity as the dust rolled in. A fleet of orbiters monitored the dust storm from above, relaying data from Mars’ explorers back to scientists on Earth.
