<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic</a> bags are everywhere, and too many slip into rivers and onto beaches. A new analysis finds that policies that either charge a small fee per bag or prohibit them outright cut the share of bags found during shoreline cleanups by 25 to 47 percent.



The study combed through hundreds of city, county, and state rules passed between 2017 and 2023. It matched those policies to more than 45,000 volunteer cleanups across the United States to see what actually changed on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-who-ran-the-study">Who ran the study</h2>



The research was coauthored by <a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/faculty/kimberly-oremus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kimberly L. Oremus</a> of the University of Delaware’s School of Marine Science and Policy (<a href="https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/departments/smsp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UDEL</a>). 



Oremus and her collaborator set out to measure litter, not just shopping behavior, so the results speak to what ends up in nature.



The team relied on citizen science, meaning trained volunteers recorded what they collected during beach, river, and lake cleanups. 



They drew on <a href="https://www.coastalcleanupdata.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TIDES</a>, a public database that stores those counts in one place so researchers can analyze patterns across time and place.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-plastic-bag-policies">Studying plastic bag policies</h2>



To isolate the effect of bag policies, the authors used a Difference-in-Differences (<a href="https://www.publichealth.columbia.edu/research/population-health-methods/difference-difference-estimation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DiD</a>) approach that compares places with and without new laws over the same period. 



That design helps rule out unrelated trends that affect everyone, such as national shifts in shopping or packaging.



The headline result is simple. In communities with full bans or fees, the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-linked-to-high-blood-pressure-and-heart-problems/">plastic</a> bags in the litter mix fell relative to similar places without policies, and the decline grew in the years after a law took effect.



State level rules tended to be more reliable in the data than city or county policies. Effects looked similar along coasts and rivers, with hints of larger gains along lakes where winds and currents spread litter differently.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-policy-fees-vs-bans">Plastic policy: Fees vs. bans</h2>



Fees change the default at every checkout and discourage taking a bag when you do not need one, which reduces both thin and thicker bag use.



Other <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/carrier-bag-charge-summary-of-data-in-england/single-use-plastic-carrier-bags-charge-data-for-england-2024-to-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence</a> points in the same direction outside the United States. England reports an almost 98 percent drop in single use carrier bags at major retailers since its charge began.



Policies that only restrict thin bags often allow thicker <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/agricultural-soil-is-now-the-worlds-biggest-plastic-dumping-ground/">plastic</a> labeled as reusable. 



Those partial bans showed the smallest and least precise effects in the analysis, which is consistent with shoppers substituting one kind of plastic for another.



Some states also pass preemption <a href="https://www.ncsl.org/environment-and-natural-resources/state-plastic-bag-legislation" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">laws</a> that block cities and counties from regulating bags at all. When local governments cannot act, the study’s data suggest statewide policies become especially important.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wildlife-and-entanglement">Wildlife and entanglement</h2>



The cleanup records include notes on animals found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-found-in-99-percent-sea-turtles-organ-tissue-reproductive-system/">entangled in debris</a>. 



In areas with bag policies, the presence of entangled animals dropped by roughly 30 to 37 percent, although the authors caution that the estimates are imprecise and more data are needed.



That finding aligns with what we know about <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/stories/single-use-plastics-101" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">single-use-plastics</a>. Thin bags linger in water and along shorelines, where they can snag, smother, or be eaten by turtles, birds, and fish.



Many studies track what happens at store checkouts, but fewer track what ends up outdoors. Shoreline cleanups offer a window into that last step in the chain from purchase to pollution.



Across the study period, the share of bags among collected items rose overall, but it rose less where bag laws existed. That pattern is exactly what you want to see if policies are slowing the flow of litter into the environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-global-plastic-policy-steps">Global plastic policy steps</h2>



A small, universal fee is a simple tool that nudges behavior without banning choices. Full bans can work too, and the analysis shows both approaches reduce the share of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/glass-bottles-contain-more-microplastics-than-plastic-containers/">plastic</a> bags found during cleanups.



The mix of policies should match local conditions. In places with more bag litter to begin with, impacts were largest, so targeting high problem areas with fast action can deliver quick gains.



Plastic bag rules are only one part of the picture. Negotiators from 175 countries are working toward a plastics treaty under <a href="https://www.unep.org/inc-plastic-pollution" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UNEP</a> that could standardize action on a wider set of products and chemicals.



The study notes that bottles, caps, and other items did not decline when bag policies passed. That is a signal that targeted rules for other single use products would be needed to curb overall litter.



Adopt a modest fee or a full ban that applies across retail and restaurant settings, and keep the text simple so it is easy to enforce. Pair the policy with clear signs at checkout and with retailer reporting that tracks compliance.



Measure results in the same way the researchers did. Recruit volunteers, log items in TIDES, and watch how the litter mix changes year over year so the policy can be adjusted as needed.



The study is published in <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adp9274" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Science</a>.

Studies confirm that a small tax definitely helps curb plastic pollution

Pretty soon, consumers will be able to wander into their neighborhood Walmart and go <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/green-technologies-development/">green</a> when they purchase their bath towels. A new initiative from the retail mega-chain aims to create more jobs in America as well as make manufacturing more environmentally-friendly. 

In 2014, Walmart, the Walmart Foundation, and the <a href="http://www.usmayors.org">United States Conference of Mayors</a> launched a funded effort to make it more cost-effective to manufacture household goods in the United States. Called the Walmart U.S. Manufacturing Innovation Fund, it has awarded a total of $10 million in grants, including approximately $3 million for projects having to do with domestic manufacturing. 

The Boston Consulting Group expects that the initiative will create around 1 million new jobs in the U.S.

The effort isn’t only focused on job creation, however. The Innovation Fund is also meant to promote development of environmentally-friendly manufacturing practices. For example, Cornell University was the recipient of one investment. Researchers there designed a method to turn post-consumer textiles into brand-new products. An added plus: it reduces energy and water consumption. 

Grant recipients are carefully chosen and must meet specific criteria. They must be able to reduce the overall cost of textile manufacturing in the U.S. – a problem that has traditionally led to manufacturing being shipped overseas. They must also develop manufacturing processes in a way that can be broadly applied across many different kinds of products. 

Among the 2017 winners of the Walmart U.S. Manufacturing Innovation grant is Washington State University. They’re working to create a green process to recycle cotton waste. Since waste products creating from the dyeing process is a huge concern to manufacturers and environmentalists, University of Massachusetts Lowell was also one of the several winners. Researchers there are in the process of developing an eco-friendly magnetic dyeing technology.

At 29,029 feet tall, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain above sea level. That record isn’t at risk any time soon – even if an earthquake in Nepal dropped the peak a little.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 rocked the Himalayan country in April 2015. Known as the Ghorka earthquake, it killed nearly 9,000 people and injured close to 22,000. It also triggered huge avalanches, including one on Mount Everest.

The shaking may have also lowered Everest’s lofty height by anywhere from a few millimeters to a full inch. At least, that’s what satellite data indicated when the shaking stopped.

It wouldn’t be unusual for land to shift during an earthquake. In fact, the 2015 quake appears to have shifted Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, several feet south, according to geologists.

And swaths of the Himalayas sunk by as much as 36 inches following the temblor, scientists said.

However, they’re split on whether the satellite data on Mount Everest is accurate. Some scientists believe that once the dust settled, Everest’s height remained the same.

That’s why <a href="http://www.surveyofindia.gov.in/pages/view/15/11-organization">Dr. Swarna Subba Rao</a>, India’s surveyor general, will lead an expedition to settle the question. The team will remeasure the mountain to find its actual height, and determine if the satellites or the scientists are right.

The expedition is expected to head to the mountain from India in two months. It will take about a month to complete the study, and another two weeks or so to compile and release the data, Rao said.

Despite Rao’s plan, Nepalese authorities told news agencies that they have not yet agreed to allow the Indian team to access the mountain.

In fact, <a href="http://dos.gov.np/language/en/">surveyors with the Nepalese government</a> said they planned their own expedition to measure the mountain.

Regardless of which team treks to Everest, they’ll need to use GPS data and triangulation to measure the peak’s height.

For as long as people have been digging minerals out of the ground, rockfalls and tunnel collapses have been recognized as hazards. But over the last hundred years, we have learned that industrial activity like mining can induce <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/oklahoma-earthquakes-drop-off/">earthquakes</a> large enough to be dangerous.

Water reservoir impoundment, extraction of conventional gas and oil, geothermal energy production, and fracking are just a few earthquake-inducing industrial activities. An oil and gas company based in the Netherlands, Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV, commissioned a comprehensive study to review potentially seismogenic industrial activity across the globe.

Many scientists involved in the study were shocked to find just how broad the scope of seismogenic industrial activity turned out to be. And as industry continues to flourish, the danger of induced earthquakes increases. Additionally, they found that the smaller earthquakes caused by industrial activity can trigger much larger ones, with extremely damaging consequences. 

Their survey found that mining related activity accounted for over 37% of human-induced earthquakes. As mining industries have expanded, the scale and depth of the mines must increase to satisfy demand. Worldwide, the total amount of rock removed by mining easily amounts to tens of billions of tons annually. That’s twice the amount 15 years ago, and the amount is expected double over the next 15 years. As those mines continue to expand, induced earthquakes become larger and occur more frequently. The scale of damage and fatalities caused by the quakes also increases. 

The report also finds that the filing of large water reservoirs behind dams induces more than 23% of earthquakes, with 170 reservoirs across the world leading to earthquake activity.

Geothermal steam production, as well as the pumping of water and materials like carbon dioxide and natural gas underground have also been associated with induced earthquakes.

Hydraulic fracturing, commonly called ‘fracking,’ which is designed to generate small earthquakes by fracturing shale rock formations deep underground, is responsible for nearly 4% of human-induced earthquakes.    

The erection of heavy superstructures, like the 700 -megaton Taipei 101 building in Taiwan, can also induce more frequent earthquakes of larger magnitudes. 

The study, led by <a href="http://theconversation.com/institutions/durham-university-867">Durham University</a> professor of Geophysics Gillian Fougler, suggests that “rare and devastating earthquakes are a fact of life on our dynamic planet, regardless of whether or not there is human activity.”

“Our work suggests that the only evidence-based way to limit the size of potential earthquakes may be to limit the scale of the projects themselves. I practice, this would mean smaller mines and reservoirs, less minerals, oil and gas extracted from fields, shallower boreholes and smaller volumes injected.” 

Jon Gluyas and Miles Wilson, both of <a href="http://theconversation.com/institutions/durham-university-867">Durham University</a>, were also contributors  to the study.

“A balance must be struck between the rowing need for energy and resources and the level of risk that is acceptable in every individual project.”

Industrial activity increasingly responsible for earthquakes

President Trump called himself “an environmentalist” during a Tuesday morning meeting and then signed two executive actions to proceed with the <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/keystone-xl-pipeline-review-drags-on-3/">Keystone XL </a>and Dakota Access pipelines (DAPL), a move in direct opposition to environmentalists.

“I am to a large extent an environmentalist. I believe in it, but it’s out of control,” Trump said.

Addressing chief executives from Ford, Fiat Chrysler, and General Motors – the largest U.S. auto manufacturers – Trump vowed to dismantle government regulations in place to preserve clean air and water.

The move was consistent with his campaign rhetoric which dismissed climate change science as a Chinese hoax looking to undercut American industry. 

“We’re bringing manufacturing back to the United States big league. We’re reducing taxes substantially and we’re reducing unnecessary regulations. And we want regulations, but we want real regulations that mean something,” Trump said.  

Following through on his campaign promises to gut regulations and slash taxes is indeed in line with his vow to fortify the fossil fuel industry. But for many, the actions prove his environmentalist claims hollow.

“Trump is an environmentalist in the same way that he is a feminist: every action and move he makes is offensive, divisive, and dangerous to the people and places we love, but he pays lip service to what he thinks people want to hear. He’s the only world leader to deny climate change and has actively attacked environmental protections from the moment he walked in the White House door,” Michael Brune, executive director of the <a href="http://www.sierraclub.org">Sierra Club</a> told Yahoo News. 

Trump signing executive orders to advance construction of the Keystone XL and DAPL is a crushing blow to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and Native-American tribes from across the nation who spent months braving weather and police harassment protesting the projects last fall.

“Donald Trump has made it clear that his America does not include millions of Americans who fought to protect our land, water, sacred sites and climate from dangerous pipelines,” said Erich Pica, president of<a href="http://www.foe.org"> Friends of Earth</a> in a statement to Al Jazeera.

Environmental activists who oppose the two pipelines have asked “all New Yorkers who care about the future of our planet,” to march on Manhattan’s Trump Tower at 6PM Tuesday evening. The<a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1832909786988486/"> Facebook announcement</a> of the protest added, “If Trump wants to build pipelines, he’s going to have to go through ALL OF US.”

Almost 4 billion years ago, the rocky debris of failed planets that never managed to fully form may have slammed against the surface of Earth, the moon, and other terrestrial planets in our solar system.

It has long been accepted that this period, referred to as the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB), was caused by a body of asteroids that currently rests in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. New research, however, suggests that huge rock and dust clusters that remained after the formation of the failed planets were instead responsible for the giant craters on Mars and the moon.

According to impact scientist William Bottke of the <a href="http://www.swri.org/">Southwest Research Institute</a> in Colorado, the LHB was likely a result of ‘dancing planets,’ a phenomenon in which larger planets leave residual matter as they migrate. That material then pummeled the surface of smaller planets in the solar system. 

“We have evidence for two early-bombardment populations and a time difference between them – a late one, plausibly made my escapees from the asteroid belt, and an early one from elsewhere,” Bottke told <a href="http://space.com">Space.com</a>.

The surfaces of terrestrial planets, including Earth and Venus, were scarred by the LHB some 3.8 - 3.9 billion years ago. Evidence of such may have been erased by weathering and tectonics on Earth and volcanic activity on Venus. Scientists have long attributed this marring to the cluster of astroids in the belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Researchers now suggest that these objects originated in two separate regions and rained down onto the surface of the planets at different times.  A recent paper suggests that planetesimals – the debris from the formation of planets – was solely to blame. 

“We find that asteroids were probably not responsible for the LHB, independently of whether the dynamical instability on the outer solar system happened early or late, because the calibrated flux is not large enough to explain the ancient lunar record,” writes Bottke’s colleague David Nesvorny. 

“Comets and leftovers of the terrestrial planet accretion probably provided a dominant source of impacts during the early epochs,” Nesvorny adds.

However, Bottke warns that additional research is required before we abandon the LHB theory entirely.

Failed planets scarred Earth's surface 4 billion years ago

Almost 4 billion years ago, the rocky debris of failed...

Following a week of heavy rains and flooding, Golden State residents were greeted by a most unusual California cloud formation on Saturday.

Technically known as fallstreak or hole punch clouds, the formation occurs when a large gap appears in the middle of a cumulus cloud. When water temperatures inside of the cloud are below freezing, but the water has not yet frozen, ice crystals begin to form. This, in turn, prompts the surrounding water droplets to evaporate, leaving the large hole. Then, if an aircraft passes through, it will cause the air to freeze and expand, leaving a pattern that looks similar to a brushstroke.

<a href="https://www.ncsu.edu/">North Carolina State University</a> scientists have confirmed a groundbreaking 2009 study: it’s possible to isolate dinosaur collagen from fossilized bones.

The new study isolated collagen peptides from a Brachylophosaurus specimen dating back 80 million years. The research lends support to the original breakthrough in 2009, showing that organic molecules can survive in fossils for much longer than previously believed. 

“Sequence data from biomolecules such as DNA and proteins, which provide critical information for evolutionary studies, have been assumed to be forever outside the reach of dinosaur paleontology,” the researchers wrote in the new study.

Mass spectrometry technology improvements, along with new databases of proteins, allowed for the breakthroughs in dino genetics.

Using the new equipment, the North Carolina State researchers extracted and analyzed a sample from the same fossils used for the 2009 study. They confirmed two of the peptide sequences recovered in 2009, and discovered six new peptide sequences.

Collagen – even 80 million-year-old dinosaur collagen – is a protein. Proteins are made up of peptides, so collecting ancient peptides from fossil remains allows paleontologists to piece together dino DNA. That allows them to study how a dinosaur may fit into evolutionary chains, and discovered any distant modern relatives. 

Brachylophosaurus canadensis, the duck-billed dinosaur that was the star of the new study, is related to modern crocodiles and alligators, as well as some ancient bird ancestors.

Previous studies that found dinosaur collagen peptides were controversial. However, the new study shows that with modern instrumentation and equipment, the results can be repeated.

“[T]his study demonstrates the importance of reexamining previously studied specimens with updated methods and instrumentation, as we obtained roughly the same amount of sequence data as the previous study with substantially less sample material,” the scientists wrote.

The study was published in the <a href="http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acs.jproteome.6b00873">Journal of Proteome Research</a>. The scientists also submitted their data to <a href="http://www.proteomexchange.org/">ProteomeXchange</a>, with the identifier PXD005087.

Protesters at the Women's March in Washington DC showed up for a number of causes. Some went to show their support for women’s reproductive rights. Others marched to raise awareness about programs that fund domestic violence intervention. Some attended for their mothers, daughters, sisters, and themselves. Meanwhile, some marched for science. 

A group of researchers were greeted with enthusiasm from the crowd when they appeared at the Women's March on Saturday. Wearing white lab coats, they posed for photographs with supporters and spoke of their concerns about the impact that newly-elected President Trump could have on the scientific community as a whole. 

Among the female scientists was geoscientist Erin DiMaggio of <a href="http://www.psu.edu/">Pennsylvania State University</a>. She expressed alarm at the Trump administration “not supporting evidence-based anything,” according to <a href="http://nature.com">Nature</a>.

Protesters discussed their concerns about a variety of comments made by Trump, as well as promises he made while on the campaign trail. From worries about government policy on vaccinations to fears that anti-immigrant resolutions could quell international collaborations between scientific researchers, the march gave women a chance to make their voices heard.

Approximately 150 to 200 of the participants were with 500 Women Scientists, a group that was formed in November 2016 to network female <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-scientists-save-data/">scientists</a>, as well as defend science and equality for women. “Our scientific work may be global,” the the organization’s website says, “yet we will take action in our own communities and we will work towards an inclusive society, where science and knowledge can be embraced and everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.”

Female scientists demonstrated on other continents. A group of 95 people participated from the McMurdo Station in Antarctica. They marched from the US research base to Hut Point, the location where British explorer Sir Robert Scott set up camp with his team in the early 1900s.

From toxic waste due to manufacturing to improper disposal of smartphones, laptops, and other hardware, there’s plenty of reasons for people who love gadgets to feel guilty about their technology addiction. Fans of Apple products can breathe a tiny bit easier, however, as a new report has deemed it the most earth-friendly tech company for the third year in a row. 

The report comes from environmental group <a href="http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/">Greenpeace</a>, which has been rating technology companies on their energy performance since 2009. Apple, Google, and Facebook all signed eco-friendly pledges in 2012, promising to transition to 100% renewable energy. 

Apple has really put its money where its mouth is, planning a new headquarters that will be completely run with renewable energy. The Apple complex will have around 700,000 square feet of solar panels to help power it. 

Greenpeace applauded Apple not only for the changes that have been made within the tech giant itself, but also for encouraging other companies to make decisions in regards to their impact on the environment. Apple has “played a catalytic role within its IT supply chain, pushing other IT data center and cloud operators who help deliver pieces of Apple’s corner of the internet to follow their lead in powering their operations with renewable energy,” said the report. 

Despite encouraging others in the tech industry to join them in seeking out renewable energy resources, Apple received a B in the advocacy category of the Greenpeace report. They received high scores overall, however, with A’s in categories like energy transparency, energy efficiency, and renewable procurement. Its clean energy index lies at 56%. Greenpeace highlighted Apple and Google as companies that consistently match their growth with equivalent or larger supplies of renewable energy.

Another high on the Greenpeace list was data center company Switch. They received all A’s and have a 100% clean energy index. On the other end of the scoring spectrum was Netflix, which rated all D’s and F’s.

Scientists believe that a volcanic eruption that happened over 200 years ago left clues as to how climate change might affect issues like food security.

Researchers with the <a href="http://www.massachusetts.edu">University of Massachusetts</a>, working with other institutions, released a study that made a connection between a volcanic eruption on Mount Tambora in Indonesia and mackerel consumption in New England. The study, published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org">Science Advances</a>, suggests the eruption caused a cooler climate that was capable of changing fish patterns on the other side of the globe. 

The eruption of Mount Tambora was significant – one of the most powerful on record. It caused climate change that included global cooling and severe weather. The year after the eruption is known as “The Year Without a Summer.” Scientists have long been interested in how the eruption impacted different aspects of life on earth, from food availability to weather. 

The impact in North America was notable in the fishing industry. New England was left with an abundance of mackerel because that species wasn’t as impacted by the change as other fish. People in the region had previously used alewives for food and fertilizer, but the cooling temperatures caused this fish to die off in great numbers. 

To this day, mackerel remains a staple in the New England economy, with fishermen netting more than 8 million pounds in 2015. 

Karen Alexander, the lead author of the study, believes that the study can help scientists understand what to anticipate from future climate change events. “How we respond to these events is going to be critically important for how we come out of this in the long term,” she explained. 

Understanding how climate change impacts the fishing industry is especially important for the more than one billion people who rely on it for their food source. In addition to this, 800 million make their living from fisheries and aquaculture.

“Unfit for human contact” – that’s how China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection described 28% of the rivers in China according to a 2015 report in <a href="http://cen.acs.org/index.html">Chemical and Engineering News</a>. Now, the government is working to do something about it, including jailing executives of companies that pollute. 

Dystar, a Chinese textile firm, was fined $2.9 million for dumping 2,700 tons of untreated liquid acid into the Grand Canal between September 2013 and May 2014. As part of the criminal verdict, the court system also jailed some of Dystar’s key managers.

The company denies the charges, telling Chemical and Engineering News that “management has neither authorized nor tolerated the illegal disposal of waste material at any time.”

In May of 2014, authorities boarded a ship operated by Dystar and noted a chemical odor lingering about. It was, they said, the same chemical smell that they had noticed in the river.

The court said that Dystar’s actions had damaged the local environment “beyond measure,” as the waste had washed into local rivers. It polluted water in surrounding districts, and several water plants were forced to suspend production. The acid, a waste product common to textile and dye manufacturing plants, also caused severe, long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems in the area. 

The move by the court system is indicative of China’s ongoing push towards improving environmental protections including air quality. Smog has long been a problem there, and the government is working to combat it through controlling things such as garbage incineration and open-air barbecues.

Besides cracking down on air pollution and environmental crime, the government of China is also working to transition the country from coal – a primary energy source – to cleaner fuel sources. In fact, China is investing $361 billion into renewable energy, working towards a 2020 goal.

Waste-to-energy plants come under fire from environmentalists. Certain kinds of waste are impossible to reuse or recycle, and waste disposal companies like Covanta say that incineration is the best way to get rid of this refuse. Burning the waste is a wonderful way to turn trash into treasure and is a great source of renewable energy, proponents say. Opponents disagree, pointing to air pollution and fire dangers as a reason that waste-to-energy plants are a bad idea. 

These kinds of plants are more common in <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/aurochs-extinct-supercow-coming-back/">Europe</a>, but aren’t seen as widely in the U.S. The state of Maryland is home to a number of waste-to-energy facilities. One of those plants – the Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility – was the site of a fire on December 8.

Covanta, which owns the plant, is now the subject of complaints alleging that they didn’t take proper safety precautions or properly evaluate hazards at the facility. The fire burned for 11 days and some firefighters required medical intervention after working to put the fire out. Covanta disputes the allegations that conditions at the facility were at fault for the fire. 

Another reason that waste-to-energy facilities are coming under fire is that they release nitrogen oxide (NOx). Baltimore-area environmental groups say that incinerators in the area are to blame for the elevated ground-ozone levels in the city. They suggest that nearly 80% of the refuse burned at a nearby facility owned by Baltimore Refuse Energy Systems Co. can be composted or recycled.

In an interview with<a href="https://www.baltimorebrew.com"> BaltimoreBrew</a>, Covanta’s chief sustainability officer Paul Gilman said that waste-to-energy programs are responsible for helping companies like Subaru and American Airlines achieve zero waste to landfill numbers. Program proponents point to<a href="https://www.epa.gov"> EPA</a> data indicating that burning waste generates less greenhouse gases than dumping it in landfills.

The global waste-to-energy market has surged in the past few years. Numbers were at $25.3 billion in 2013 and are expected to reach $43.96 billion by 2024.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.

The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. "Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.

Then, almost like magic, acid rain vanished from public discourse. What happened? Did we actually solve one of the late 20th century's most pressing environmental challenges?



The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The science behind it</h2>



Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. According to US Geological Survey documentation, Scottish chemist Angus Smith first coined "acid rain" in 1872, but it didn't become a household phrase until the 1960s and 1970s when Swedish scientist Svante Odén documented its devastating effects on Scandinavian lakes and European forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The crisis at its peak</h2>



During the height of public concern, environmental damage was both widespread and visible. This wasn't some abstract future threat – people could see destruction happening in real-time.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Environmental devastation</h2>



The most dramatic impacts were impossible to ignore. Research documented by the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation shows that in the Adirondack Mountains, more than 200 lakes became so acidic they couldn't support fish life. The Adirondack Council reports that 409 lakes once supported brook trout, but many lost their fish populations due to acid rain.



By 1976, when scientists cataloged all acidified lakes in the Adirondack Park, researchers found that half of the lakes over 2,000 feet above sea level had no fish, according to studies published in environmental journals. The acidification process worked like a slow-motion disaster. As acid rain fell into watersheds, it gradually lowered pH levels. Fish couldn't survive in acidic water, and their food sources died off too.



Trees at high elevations showed stress directly linked to acid rain. It weakened them by leaching nutrients and making them susceptible to disease. Historical records show Germany's Black Forest saw nearly half its trees damaged by the mid-1980s.

Acid rain wasn't just environmental – it was expensive. Acidic precipitation corroded infrastructure, buildings, and monuments. Historic stone structures deteriorated at accelerated rates. A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
