Balancing cleaner air with rising incomes is not a luxury question for developing countries. It is a real-world, and real-life, policy problem that shapes health, jobs, and the future of their cities.



A new <a href="https://www.worldscientific.com/doi/10.1142/S0217590825500304" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> lays out when zero emissions can go hand in hand with steady <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-will-cut-world-gdp-by-a-staggering-40-percent-if-nothing-changes/">growth</a>, even when governments rely on foreign aid.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zero-emissions-and-economic-growth">Zero emissions and economic growth</h2>



The work comes from <a href="https://tus.elsevierpure.com/en/persons/hideo-noda" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hideo Noda</a> at the Tokyo University of Science (<a href="https://www.tus.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TUS</a>) with coauthor Fengqi Fang, a Ph.D. candidate in Business Administration from the Graduate School of Business Administration at TUS. 



The team builds a simple but testable way to check if a country can hit zero net <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-trade-is-fueling-a-dangerous-rise-in-methane-emissions/">emissions</a> while its economy keeps expanding.



They also verify the model numerically using real world style parameters so it is not just a chalkboard exercise. 



The paper connects theory to a specific United Nations target on decoupling growth from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5c-is-almost-certainly-out-of-reach/">environmental damage</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zero-emissions-models">Zero emissions models</h2>



First, the authors define a zero-emissions <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/net-zero-coalition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">policy</a> as keeping net pollution at zero at every point in time, by matching abatement to emissions. That requires money, technology, and clear rules to assign who pays.



They run two versions of the economy. 



One is a public goods <a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/stantcheva/files/lecture8.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a> where government services like roads or schools lift private production for everyone at once, a standard growth <a href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/261726" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a> introduced by Robert Barro in 1990. 



The second adds <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-will-climate-change-hit-hardest-global-index-reveals-vulnerability/">congestion</a>, where more people share the same public services so the boost per person shrinks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-minimum-income-rule">Minimum income rule</h2>



The key test is whether gross domestic product (<a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GDP</a>) per capita rises above a minimum income threshold so a country can fully clean what it emits. 



The authors call this the kindergarten rule level of abatement, as in: “clean-up what you make dirty.”



"Following the Kindergarten rule means implementing zero emission technologies in either finite time or asymptotically," noted M. Scott Taylor and William Brock in their related <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w9597" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>. 



This frame anchors the new threshold concept for developing countries.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aid-supports-clean-income-growth">Aid supports clean income growth</h2>



Many low income governments fund services with official development assistance (<a href="https://www.oecd.org/en/topics/policy-issues/official-development-assistance-oda.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ODA</a>), so the model lets outside aid pay for both cleaning and public services. 



That design reflects classic work showing how aid aimed at productive public services can shift long run growth.



In related <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304387806000290" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theory</a>, flexible labor and aid tied to public capital influence the path of output and welfare. The new paper extends this logic to pollution control that must be paid for every year.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-income-threshold">Changing income threshold</h2>



The threshold depends on clean technology, population size, and how much aid is fixed to environmental <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expanding-oil-and-gas-fields-threaten-global-climate-goals/">uses</a>. Better abatement technology lowers the income bar because each dollar of cleanup removes more pollution.



Population matters differently across the two models. In the public goods case, a larger labor force can raise growth because services scale with the economy, while in the congestion case that scale effect drops out as services get diluted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taxes-and-zero-emissions-targets">Taxes and zero emissions targets</h2>



The model also looks at tax policy, focusing on a labor income tax that finances services. 



There is a tax rate that maximizes the growth of income per person, and under both models governments can reach the needed income threshold in finite time if they choose that growth maximizing rate.



Public services that complement private capital are the link. When governments tax and spend on those services efficiently, private firms produce more and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-action-economies-can-grow-while-cutting-emissions/">economy climbs</a> to the income level that makes full abatement feasible.



"Both models indicate that implementing the zero-emissions policy is compatible with sustainable economic growth," wrote Noda. 



They also show the kindergarten rule threshold is higher with congestion than without it, so crowding of public services slows the crossing.



"We call this threshold the kindergarten rule level of pollution abatement in terms of GDP per capita," wrote Noda. The result gives policymakers a clear income target, not just a slogan about decoupling.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-income-growth-and-sdgs">Income growth and SDGs</h2>



Target 8.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href="https://www.undp.org/sustainable-development-goals" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SDGs</a>) asks countries to decouple growth from environmental degradation. 



The authors argue their framework helps explain when that is possible in practice, and how policy levers change the timing.



The UN defines the <a href="https://metadata.un.org/sdg/8.4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">target</a> as improving resource efficiency and decoupling growth from environmental harm through 2030. The paper’s threshold view fits that mandate with a concrete yardstick.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-results-still-matter">Why results still matter</h2>



Earlier <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0959652621009112" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> in the same research stream focused on developed, innovation-driven economies and showed that zero emissions could be achieved alongside continued growth. 



That study examined whether sustained economic expansion could occur while also maintaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-net-zero-world-will-require-75-trillion-of-investment-and-1-billion-electric-cars/">zero net pollution emissions</a>.



The new paper shows the same compatibility can hold in aid dependent settings where innovation is not the main growth engine. 



That extension fills a real gap, because many low income countries face tighter fiscal and technological limits.



Build or buy cleaner technology so the threshold falls. Treat tied aid for environmental programs as a growth tool and not just a cost center.



Set tax policy to raise the growth rate of income per person, then sustain it long enough to pass the threshold. Guard against congestion by scaling services with population, so gains are not diluted.

Scientists have unearthed a remarkable ancient forest preserved under ice on the Beartooth Plateau, providing a rare look into how warming climates could reshape alpine ecosystems. 



The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (<a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2412162121" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PNAS</a>), analyzes the remnants of a mature whitebark pine forest that once thrived at an elevation of 10,000 feet during a period of warmer temperatures roughly 6,000 years ago.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-exposed-by-melting-ice">Ancient forest exposed by melting ice</h2>



The forest, which endured for centuries before cooling temperatures forced it to retreat downslope, was sealed under ice approximately 5,500 years ago due to a shift in summer solar radiation and subsequent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-cooling-not-warming-caused-a-major-mass-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">volcanic cooling</a>.&nbsp;



“This is pretty dramatic evidence of ecosystem change due to temperature warming. It's an amazing story of how dynamic these systems are,” said David McWethy, one of the study’s authors and an associate professor in Michigan State University (<a href="https://www.montana.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MSU</a>’s) Department of Earth Sciences.



Unlike glaciers, ice patches do not flow and instead preserve deposited materials such as pollen, charcoal, and macrofossils in their frozen layers. 



These conditions allowed the forest to remain intact until recent warming caused the ice to melt, exposing the ancient remnants.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-decoding-climate-history">Decoding climate history</h2>



The idea to explore the Beartooth Plateau for ancient climate clues stemmed from earlier discoveries by Craig Lee, now an assistant professor at MSU. 



In 2007, Lee uncovered a 10,300-year-old atlatl fragment in the region, suggesting that layers of ice held vast records of cultural and environmental history.



“Most of our best long-term climate records come from Greenland and Antarctica. It's not a small thing to find ice patches that persisted for that long a time period at lower latitudes in the interior continent,” McWethy noted.

Building on this discovery, McWethy, Lee, and Greg Pederson, a paleoclimatologist with the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Geological Survey</a>, began investigating the ice patches in 2016. By 2018, their team expanded the project to study additional alpine ice patches in the region.&nbsp;



This collaborative effort involved tribes, federal agencies, and multiple universities and focused on reconstructing the area’s long-term <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-earths-temperature-has-changed-over-500-million-years/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate history</a> and its influence on Indigenous peoples.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reconstructing-the-ancient-alpine-ecosystem">Reconstructing the ancient alpine ecosystem</h2>



To piece together the story of the forest, the team examined multiple elements of this alpine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alpine-ecosystems-are-thrown-off-balance-by-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ecosystem</a>. Using ice cores, they analyzed water isotopes and organic material, while Pederson harvested cross-sections of ancient wood for radiocarbon dating.&nbsp;



The findings confirmed that during a period of moderate and moist climate, tree lines shifted upward, allowing whitebark pine forests to thrive for 500 years.



“The plateau seems to have been the perfect place to allow for ice patches to establish and persist for thousands of years, recording important information on past climate, human activity and environmental change,” Pederson said.



The study suggests that as today’s climate warms, tree lines could rise again, transforming areas of alpine tundra into forest. 



However, Pederson cautioned that factors such as precipitation, wind, and snowpack would influence the density, distribution, and composition of these potential new forests. 



“Growing season temperatures are the primary control on tree line elevation and latitude, but other factors such as moisture, wind, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-driven-climate-change-is-to-blame-for-sharp-snowpack-declines-since-1980/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">snowpack</a> and human disturbance may play an important role in dictating forest structure and elevational limits,” he explained.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-alpine-ecosystems">Implications for alpine ecosystems</h2>



The researchers warn that these changes could have profound impacts on the region’s ecosystem and resources. 



Rising tree lines might alter high-altitude snowpack, which serves as a critical water source for irrigation and hydroelectric power. 



Additionally, if forests encroach on tundra areas, they could increase the risk of wildfires due to changing fuel conditions.



Cathy Whitlock, a climate expert and MSU Regents Professor Emerita, emphasized the broader implications. 



She noted that reduced snowpack could strain water supplies, while McWethy added that the establishment of forests in tundra areas might fundamentally alter the region’s fire dynamics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-learning-from-the-past-to-predict-the-future">Learning from the past to predict the future</h2>



The study emphasizes the importance of understanding past ecological changes to prepare for future challenges.&nbsp;



“That’s the reason why studies of past ecological change are more than interesting pieces of science. They have much larger implications for the resources we all depend on,” Pederson said.



As climate change accelerates, the Beartooth Plateau’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ancient forest</a> serves as both a stark reminder of the Earth’s dynamic ecosystems and a window into the potential future of high-altitude environments.

It traps heat from the Sun by absorbing it and radiating some of it back toward the planet's surface. 



This natural process keeps the Earth warm enough to sustain life. However, when CO2 levels in the atmosphere increase, the planet becomes warmer, leading to significant climate changes.



While scientists understand how CO2 affects the climate today, its role in shaping Earth's climate millions of years ago has been harder to uncover. 



Much of this information on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-co2-emissions-rise-as-nations-tackle-fossil-fuel-dependence/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CO2</a> is hidden in geological records in the form of layers of rock and fossils that act like time capsules of Earth's past environments.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-fossils-reveal-climate-secrets">Fossils reveal climate secrets</h2>



A team of scientists, led by Dr. Hana Jurikova at the <a href="https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St Andrews</a>, has made a breakthrough in understanding this history.



The researchers studied a crucial period called the Late Paleozoic Ice Age, which occurred between 335 and 265 million years ago. This was a time of dramatic climate change when the Earth experienced extensive glaciation (ice ages) and subsequent warming.



The research revealed that CO2 levels played a central role in driving these massive climatic transitions. By unlocking the secrets of this ancient period, the team showed how CO2 fluctuations caused Earth to cool into ice ages and then warm as CO2 levels rose again.



This discovery sheds light on how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-sinks-are-losing-their-ability-to-absorb-co2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CO2</a> has been a powerful driver of climate shifts throughout Earth's history, influencing both the environment and the evolution of life on the planet.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reconstructing-past-co-2-levels">Reconstructing past CO2 levels</h2>



The team used the fossilized shells of brachiopods - ancient, clam-like organisms that date back hundreds of millions of years - to reconstruct past atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plants-absorb-31-more-co2-than-previously-estimated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CO2 levels</a>.



These shells, which are preserved across geological time, store chemical fingerprints of Earth's past climate. By analyzing these fingerprints, the researchers determined how atmospheric CO2 fluctuated during the Carboniferous and Permian periods.



"This showed that the Late Paleozoic Ice Age had prolonged low CO2 levels, unprecedented in Earth's history," explained Dr. Jurikova. "Atmospheric CO2 then rose abruptly, 294 million years ago, due to large-scale volcanic eruptions, warming the planet and melting back the ice."



The study demonstrates that these CO2 changes were instrumental in transitioning Earth out of an ice age and spurring the evolution of reptiles.



"The end of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age was a turning point in the evolution of life and the environment, leading to the rise of reptiles. Now we know it was paced by carbon dioxide," said Dr. Jurikova.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lessons-for-the-present-and-future">Lessons for the present and future</h2>



The findings highlight the central role that CO2 has played in regulating Earth's climate over geological timescales.



Low CO2 levels during the Carboniferous period triggered extensive glaciation, while higher levels in the Permian period led to global warming and ice sheet melting.



"This time interval gives a potential geological analog for the impact of CO2 on our planet. CO2 emissions in the past caused major global warming and sea level rise, and if left unchecked, they will do so again in the future," noted Dr. James Rae, a co-author of the study.

CO2 has regulated Earth’s climate for millions of years

Lemurs - small, large-eyed primates that dwell in Madagascar’s treetops - are a fascinating puzzle in the story of evolution. When they first arrived on the island millions of years ago, they found an incredibly varied landscape, stretching from humid tropical forests in the east to the dry, desert-like regions in the southwest.&nbsp;



With few other mammals to compete with, these ancestral <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/endangered-lemurs-now-prey-for-equally-endangered-fosas/">lemurs</a> branched out into an astonishing range of shapes and sizes, from tiny mouse lemurs no bigger than a teacup to giant sloth lemurs that once roamed the forests.&nbsp;



Yet in a perplexing twist, even though many species boast remarkably high genetic diversity, nearly 90% of Madagascar’s more than 100 lemur species are on the brink of extinction.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-and-climate-effects-on-lemur-diversity">Human and climate effects on lemur diversity </h2>



Seeking answers to this paradox, an international team of anthropologists and biologists from <a href="https://www.umontreal.ca/en/">University of Montreal</a> (UdeM) and <a href="https://www.upf.edu/en/">Pompeu Fabra University</a> (PFU) in Spain pursued a genetic line of investigation.&nbsp;



By sequencing the genomes of 162 lemurs representing 50 different species - an effort larger than any attempted before - they exposed the remarkable variety locked within lemurs’ DNA.&nbsp;



The findings, published in the journal <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1038/s41559-024-02596-1">Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution</a>, shine a light on how both environmental conditions and human influence have shaped lemur populations over time.



The research was led by Professor Joseph Orkin, principal investigator at the UdeM multiomic primate evolution lab, and Spanish research professor Tomas Marques Bonet, head of PFU’s Institute of Evolutionary Biology,&nbsp;



The project uncovered how Madagascar’s ecology and climatic changes - alongside human presence - have molded lemur genetic diversity and affected their future survival.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lemurs-have-high-genomic-diversity">Lemurs have high genomic diversity </h2>



According to the study, gene flow between various lemur species has been taking place across hundreds of thousands of years.&nbsp;



“As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-climate-shift-sheds-light-on-future-global-warming/">climatic shifts</a> periodically connected once-isolated habitats, lemurs from different species and populations would interbreed, sharing genetic material that boosted their overall diversity,” Orkin said.



“On top of that, the most diverse species appear to be the ones with fragmented populations in multiple ecosystems across the island. This pattern of isolation and reconnection seems to be building up and redistributing genetic variation across the island.”



Even though many lemurs are now critically endangered, they still possess extremely high genomic diversity.&nbsp;



“Many species of lemurs have super-high levels of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/butterflys-rapid-expansion-led-to-lower-genetic-diversity/">genomic diversity</a>, which seems counterintuitive when you consider that so many of them are critically endangered. It was really exciting to see how the ecology of Madagascar helped to shape the diversity of lemurs,” Orkin added.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-arrival-and-its-consequences">Human arrival and its consequences</h2>



Although Madagascar’s natural conditions favored diverse lemur populations for ages, human influence altered this balance. The study points to a striking link between the expansion of human populations, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-deforestation-crisis-how-can-we-stop-massive-forest-losses/">deforestation</a>, shifts in hunting, and the sharp decline in lemur numbers.&nbsp;



It remains unknown exactly when the first humans set foot on the island, but signs suggest a population surge around 1,000 years ago, followed by dramatic changes in the landscape by the 1700s.



“When we looked at the genetic evidence for population declines, we kept seeing these two consistent inflection points around 1,000 and 300 years ago. It was really striking to see such a clear overlap between the timing of human population expansion and the decline of lemur populations,” Orkin said.



Habitats fragmented by logging and clearing not only reduce lemur populations but also sever the natural routes that once facilitated gene flow. Without those connections, inbreeding becomes more likely, placing lemurs - already under threat - in even greater danger.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-human-expansion-and-biodiversity-loss">Human expansion and biodiversity loss</h2>



The story of Madagascar’s lemurs carries powerful messages for worldwide conservation efforts.&nbsp;



“This story isn’t unique to Madagascar,” Orkin said. “Human population expansion is accelerating the loss of biodiversity everywhere we look.”



“But the moral of the story is that humans are only one part of the natural world. The more we learn about how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/polar-light-sustains-biodiversity-over-millions-of-years/">biodiversity</a> is shaped by natural and human forces, the better chance we have of protecting it.”



By preserving natural habitats and ensuring that populations remain connected, there is hope for protecting the genetic richness that has allowed lemurs to thrive for so many millennia. 



If conservation strategies succeed, these remarkable creatures may continue to captivate scientists - and the rest of us - for generations to come.

Climate change is no longer a looming distant threat. It's here now, and it's affecting everything, from the weather we experience to the air we breathe. But what if the solution to this colossal issue lay right beneath our noses, or to be precise, in the construction materials in our own homes?



It sounds far-fetched, right? Well, a recent study begs to differ.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turning-construction-into-climate-solutions">Turning construction into climate solutions</h2>



"Could common construction materials, the very ones we use to build our homes and roads, hold the key to mitigating climate change?"



This is the question posed by a new environmentally-conscious research study conducted by scientists at the University of California, Davis (<a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UC Davis</a>), and <a href="https://www.stanford.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stanford University</a>.



Elisabeth Van Roijen, who led the study as a graduate student at UC Davis, asks, "What if, instead, we can leverage materials that we already produce in large quantities to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-poop-can-be-used-to-store-carbon-in-the-deep-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">store carbon</a>?" 



The massive potential of everyday building materials, such as concrete, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/urban-trees-surrounded-by-less-asphalt-grow-taller-and-stronger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">asphalt</a>, plastics, and brick, to store away carbon dioxide (CO2) was explored in this study. 



Carbon sequestration, the process undertaken to achieve this, aims to capture and convert CO2 into a stable form and store it where it cannot contribute to climate change. 



There, it lies dormant, locked away, not exacerbating our warming world.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-common-goods-used-for-climate-good">Common goods used for climate good</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-rise-of-self-heating-concrete-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Concrete</a>, a construction material already produced in massive quantities, was found to have a significant potential for carbon storage to address climate change.



That’s not surprising, considering over 20 billion tons of concrete are produced every year. 



Add to that, the sheer scale of global concrete use makes any viable carbon storage solution involving it incredibly impactful.



Bio-based plastics were also identified as promising, capable of absorbing a large amount of carbon by weight. 



The research also explored into other carbon-storing approaches, such as introducing biomass fiber into bricks, and using artificial rocks loaded with carbon as concrete and asphalt pavement aggregate.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-concrete-the-basics">Understanding concrete -- the basics</h2>



Making concrete is simpler than you might think. It all starts with mixing four main ingredients: cement, water, sand, and gravel. 



Cement acts like the glue that holds everything together. You pour the cement into a big container, add water to create a paste, and then mix in sand and gravel. 



This combination creates a thick, pourable mixture that you can shape into whatever you need, whether it’s a sidewalk, a driveway, or the foundation of a house. The water reacts with the cement, starting a chemical process that makes the mixture harden over time.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bamboo-plants-shows-great-potential-to-become-the-next-big-renewable-energy-source/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Integrating biomass</a> into the concrete-making process is a fantastic way to make construction more sustainable and reduce our environmental footprint. 



One common method is by adding natural fibers, such as hemp, flax, or bamboo, to the concrete mix. These fibers act as a reinforcement, similar to how steel rebar works, but with the added benefits of being renewable and biodegradable. 



By mixing these plant-based materials into the concrete, we can enhance its strength and durability while also cutting down on the use of traditional, energy-intensive materials.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-waste-not-want-not">Waste not, want not</h2>



Beyond the direct environmental benefits of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-sequestration-method-co2-rock/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon sequestration</a> in construction materials, there's another climate-related aspect well worth discussing.



The raw materials required for these carbon capture processes typically comprise low-value waste materials like biomass, enhancing their value and promoting a circular economy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ready-set-apply">Ready, set, apply!</h2>



The readiness of the technology involved in these carbon-storing methods ranges across the board. 



While some are at the investigation or pilot scale, others are primed and ready for adoption. 



There's no denying that more technology development is needed, especially in areas where material performance and net-storage potential of individual manufacturing methods need validation.



But, this research seems to suggest, we're off to a good start.



In doing so, this study makes a profound point. When it comes to climate change, the tools we need to fight it might just be lying around us, waiting to be used in innovative ways. 



A few tweaks to our familiar construction materials, and our homes and cities might transform from mere dwellers to climate heroes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-friendly-construction-materials">Climate-friendly construction materials</h2>



While the potential of using construction materials for carbon sequestration is promising, scaling this vision to a global level comes with its challenges.



 One significant hurdle is the energy-intensive nature of manufacturing materials like concrete and plastics, which already contribute to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenhouse-gas-emissions-reach-another-all-time-high/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">greenhouse gas emissions</a>. 



To make a meaningful impact, researchers emphasize the need for integrating renewable energy sources into the production processes.



Furthermore, the adoption of these innovative materials requires collaboration across industries, from policymakers creating incentives for sustainable practices to construction companies rethinking traditional methods. 



Public awareness is another critical piece of the puzzle - educating communities and stakeholders on the dual benefits of these materials could drive widespread acceptance and implementation.



Despite these challenges, the opportunities are immense. Transforming construction into a carbon-negative industry could turn cities into massive carbon storage hubs, helping to offset emissions from other sectors. 



As the study highlights, with continued innovation and collaboration, the tools to combat climate change may already be within reach, embedded in the construction materials of our built environment.

Construction materials could store carbon in homes and buildings, helping the climate

Climate change is no longer a looming distant threat. It's...

Antarctica’s vast ice sheet, holding over half of Earth’s freshwater, plays a critical role in regulating the planet’s climate and sea levels. The continent's ice shelves, large floating extensions of ice over the ocean, are of particular interest.



Observations show that many of these ice shelves are thinning due to melting from below, with profound implications for ocean dynamics and global sea levels.



Among these, the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf stands out. Spanning the Weddell Sea, it is one of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves. Fortunately, it remains relatively stable for now. Near-freezing currents circulating beneath the shelf provide a protective buffer. 



However, climate models warn that warmer currents may reach this region in the future, potentially destabilizing the shelf.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ice-shelf-dynamics-in-antarctica">Ice shelf dynamics in Antarctica </h2>



To predict the future of the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, N. Steiger and colleagues from <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne Université</a> conducted a detailed analysis of ocean data collected between 2017 and 2021. 



The team used sensors placed on the seafloor (moored instruments) and on floating devices beneath the water's surface.



These tools recorded water temperature and velocity, providing a wealth of information about how ocean currents interact with the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/melting-ice-in-antarctica-could-wake-sleeping-volcanoes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelf</a>. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-previous-observations-and-limitations">Previous observations and limitations</h2>



Earlier research had identified a recurring phenomenon: in summer, warm seawater rises from middle ocean depths and flows along the Filchner Trough - a deep undersea valley - toward the edge of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/emergency-meeting-reveals-the-alarming-extent-of-antarcticas-ice-loss/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> shelf.



However, these studies were often limited to a single location or a short timeframe, which left gaps in understanding the broader system.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warming-of-antarctica-s-ice-shelves">Warming of Antarctica's ice shelves</h2>



The new study revealed a more intricate system of water movement. Warm water doesn't only follow the main Filchner Trough but also uses a smaller, eastern trough. Importantly, the role of each pathway varies from year to year.



During years with higher-than-average temperatures, warm water moves faster and more extensively across the continental shelf. This increases the likelihood of warm water reaching the ice shelf and potentially contributing to its melting.



Steiger’s research highlights the importance of long-term and multi-site observations to grasp the complex interactions between ocean currents and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-patterns-point-to-rapid-melting-risks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Antarctic</a> ice shelves. These insights improve predictions about how warming oceans may affect the stability of ice shelves and contribute to rising sea levels globally.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warm-summers-and-ice-shelf-changes">Warm summers and ice shelf changes</h2>



The researchers identified 2017 and 2018 as exceptional summers, characterized by unusually warm water flowing into the region and a significant reduction in floating sea <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-ice-sheet-past-present-and-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a>. These conditions were crucial because sea ice acts as a barrier that influences ocean behavior.



When there is less sea ice, the ocean becomes more dynamic, enabling warm water from deeper layers to rise and spread across the continental shelf more easily.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-did-the-warm-water-reach-the-ice-shelf">Did the warm water reach the ice shelf?</h2>



Although it remains uncertain whether the warm water in 2017 and 2018 actually reached the edge of Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf, there is evidence from 2013 suggesting similar warm water flows did reach the shelf’s edge during that year. 



In 2013, researchers linked this movement of warm water to specific wind patterns that likely drove the flow toward the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/when-will-the-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice shelf</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-of-reduced-sea-ice">Implications of reduced sea ice</h2>



The lack of sea ice doesn't just alter the flow of warm water; it also allows the warm water to interact more directly with the continental shelf and potentially with the ice shelf itself. 



Understanding how these dynamics play out under varying conditions is critical for predicting future changes in Antarctic ice shelves and their contribution to rising sea levels.

Identifying the drivers of warm water flow beneath Antarctic ice shelves remains a priority. As Steiger’s work shows, year-to-year variability in ocean currents and ice cover can significantly influence the shelf’s stability.



Continued observations and advanced modeling are crucial to predicting how these massive ice shelves will respond to shifting climate patterns.



This research emphasizes the need for continued monitoring and vigilance. The stability of Antarctica’s ice shelves holds the key to the planet’s future sea levels and climate health.

Have you ever wondered how lead pollution has impacted society over thousands of years? Imagine if we could take a snapshot of the past and use it to understand the current state of human health and the environment.



Now, a study from the DRI (Desert Research Institute) transforms this tantalizing concept into reality, providing a fascinating glimpse into past environmental pollution and its effect on human health.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dirty-facts-from-the-cleanest-places">Dirty facts from the cleanest places</h2>



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-sea-ice-is-headed-toward-a-historic-low/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arctic</a>, an untouched frozen wilderness, surprisingly holds long-forgotten records of human activity in its icy depths.



In recent decades, DRI scientists have climbed the highest peaks and drilled deep into the Arctic ice, to extract precious ice cores.



Embedded throughout these ice cores are tiny bubbles of air, meticulously preserved, that contain microscopic clues about the earth's atmosphere at the time that layer of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-melting-arctic-sea-ice-could-disrupt-earths-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> was created.



These bubbles are like natural time capsules, and contain a treasure trove of information that allows scientists to track the levels of atmospheric lead <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lead-pollution-has-made-its-way-to-the-top-of-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">pollution</a> over centuries.



For the past 20 years, researchers at the McConnell Ice Core Laboratory at DRI have been cracking open these icy time capsules. 



Their objective? They hope to race the pollution record of the distant past and understand how it continues to impact us.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-arctic-ice-reveals-ancient-lead-pollution">Arctic ice reveals ancient lead pollution</h2>



Through these ice cores, <a href="https://www.dri.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DRI</a> researchers have been able to travel in time, back to the era of the Roman Empire, specifically to the Pax Romana - a 200-year period of relative peace and stability.



During this time, Roman civilization saw a significant increase in mining and smelting operations across Europe.



The unfortunate byproduct of this prosperity was lead pollution.



"This is the first study to take a pollution record from an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rapid-antarctic-sea-ice-loss-is-causing-severe-storms-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ice</a> core and invert it to get atmospheric concentrations of pollution and then assess human impacts," enthused Joe McConnell, the study's lead author.



"The idea that we can do this for 2,000 years ago is pretty novel and exciting." 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smelting-process-in-ancient-rome">Smelting process in ancient Rome</h2>



During the Roman Empire, smelting was a crucial process that allowed Romans to extract valuable metals like iron, copper, and lead from their ores. 



They set up large furnaces called bloomeries for iron and furnaces for other metals, where they would heat the ore with charcoal in the presence of a strong airflow. 



This intense heat caused the metal to separate from the rocky ore, melting and collecting at the bottom of the furnace. 



Skilled workers, known as metallurgists, carefully managed the temperature and airflow to ensure the metals melted correctly without wasting fuel or damaging the furnace. 



Once the metal was extracted, the Romans used it to create everything from weapons and tools to intricate artworks and building materials. 



For example, iron was essential for making swords and armor for their armies, while copper and tin were combined to produce bronze, used in statues and coins. 



Lead was used extensively in plumbing and construction, showcasing the Romans' advanced engineering skills.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-mapping-the-course-of-lead-pollution">Mapping the course of lead pollution</h2>



By analyzing the lead isotopes in the ice cores, the researchers tracked the rise and fall of lead pollution levels between 500 BCE and 600 CE.



They found that lead pollution first began to surge during the Iron Age, and peaked during the late 2nd century BCE during the height of the Roman Republic.



After a sharp decline during the 1st-century crisis, it rose once more around 15 BCE, following the rise of the Roman Empire.



The researchers estimate that during the height of the Roman Empire, over 500 kilotons of lead were discharged into the atmosphere, primarily as a byproduct of silver mining. 



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earth-day-2024-the-tide-may-finally-be-turning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">silver lining</a> of this cloud of lead pollution is that it helped to link lead pollution records to historical events and socio-economic changes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-legacy-of-lead-pollution">Legacy of lead pollution</h2>



Despite the initial decline of lead pollution following the fall of the Roman Empire, it wasn't until the early 2nd millennium CE that lead pollution in the Arctic began to dwarf even the high levels seen during the Roman era. 



This chronic exposure to lead pollution has left a lasting legacy in the form of continuous negative health impacts.



"Lead is known to have a wide range of human health impacts, but we chose to focus on cognitive decline because it’s something we can put a number on," explained the study coauthor, Nathan Chellman, who is assistant research professor of snow and ice hydrology at DRI.



"An IQ reduction of 2 to 3 points doesn't sound like much, but when you apply that to essentially the entire European population, it’s kind of a big deal.” 



As the researchers investigate more deeply into past pollution records and connect them to present-day health, it is becoming increasingly evident how much our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-makes-metals-in-the-ocean-more-toxic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">activities</a> from thousands of years ago can impact our health today.

Lead pollution may have caused the fall of the Roman empire

The year 2024 has been marked by a series of extreme weather events that forced billions of people to face the harsh reality of a changing climate.



Persistent droughts gripped southern Africa and Central America, while devastating floods swept through Spain. In the Southeast U.S., Hurricane Helene unleashed its fury.



An international team of scientists led by Dr. Wenxia Zhang analyzed these events as part of a study published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.



The study highlights the year's notable extremes - rainfall, flooding, tropical cyclones, and droughts. The researchers examined their causes, the role of global warming, and the challenges of building a climate-resilient future.



“Most extreme events have a large random element,” said Dr. James Risbey of CSIRO. “Some extremes are more likely when larger-scale drivers such as ENSO influence weather patterns.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-el-nino-and-climate-change">Role of El Niño and climate change</h2>



El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon, influenced many of 2024's extreme rainfall and drought events, particularly during the winter of 2023/24. 



However, El Niño alone does not explain the severity of these events. Attribution science has revealed that human-induced climate change has amplified the impacts of such natural patterns, making extreme weather more intense and destructive.



“The climate change influence can be direct through physical processes causing the extreme, or indirect in influencing the weather, large scale drivers, and key baselines,” explained Dr. Risbey.



Dr. Zhang, an expert at the <a href="http://www.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, noted that anthropogenic warming enhances atmospheric moisture and evaporation, intensifying rainfall and droughts.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenges-in-understanding-climate-extremes">Challenges in understanding climate extremes</h2>



Attribution science, which studies the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-added-41-extra-days-of-dangerous-heat-in-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">role of climate change</a> in specific extreme weather events, has made significant progress. 



However, challenges remain, particularly when observed weather extremes do not match predictions from climate models. These inconsistencies reduce confidence in the results and make it harder to draw precise conclusions about the role of human-induced climate change in individual events.



Dr. Michael Brody of <a href="https://www.gmu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">George Mason University</a> emphasizes that improving our ability to attribute extreme events to climate change requires a deeper understanding of how climate systems work. 



Enhanced attribution methods can provide more reliable insights, which are crucial for shaping recovery efforts after disasters and creating better preparedness plans for the future. 



Accurate attribution enables decision-makers to allocate resources effectively, minimize risks, and build resilience in vulnerable communities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-forecasting-and-warning-systems">Forecasting and warning systems</h2>



Forecasting and effective warnings can save lives. While Hurricane Helene was well-predicted, its impact exposed vulnerabilities in underprepared communities.



“Increasing the quality of forecasts is important, but acting upon them to reduce vulnerabilities is crucial," said Dr. Piotr Wolski of the <a href="https://uct.ac.za" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cape Town</a>.

Such disasters often result in widespread frustration and anger, especially when people feel unprepared or unsupported.



Dr. Wolski stresses that simply issuing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scorching-summer-of-2024-could-make-it-the-hottest-year-on-record/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">warnings</a> is not enough. It is essential to ensure that these warnings are communicated clearly, reach those at risk, and are acted upon effectively. By taking these steps, we can address vulnerabilities, reduce harm, and help communities recover more quickly.



The events in Spain serve as a reminder that better preparation and response systems are vital to managing the challenges of a changing climate.

Climate extremes in 2024: What have we learned?

America, known for its global influence, also ranks high in food waste production. In 2016, the federal government established a bold goal to halve food waste by 2030. However, recent findings reveal a significant gap between these ambitions and actual progress.



Despite the targets, the U.S. remains among the top three countries wasting the most food. Plans aimed to reduce average waste to 164 pounds per person by 2030, but progress remains stagnant.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-issue-of-food-waste">Growing issue of food waste</h2>



A new study led by researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Davis</a> uncovers an alarming truth - food waste per person has been climbing instead of descending since 2016.



“We’re just five years away from 2030 so it’s quite alarming how little progress we have made. More comprehensive policies need to be implemented as soon as possible,” noted Sarah Kakadellis, a postdoctoral researcher with the UC Davis Department of Food Science and Technology.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-discrepancy-between-state-and-federal-policies">Discrepancy between state and federal policies</h2>



This study sheds light on the alignment - or lack thereof - between state policies and federal targets. It's up to individual states to decide which policies to execute.



Most state-privileged policies lean towards methodologies like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/compost-could-boost-crop-yields-by-millions-of-tons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">composting</a> and anaerobic digestion - more recycling and less prevention and rescue. 



The scale tips more towards turning waste into compost than feeding the hungry or channeling it towards animal feed.



“Instead of recycling our excess food, we should be redirecting as much as we can to populations that need it,” noted Kakadellis. 



In 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency modified its definition of food waste to exclude recycling.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact-of-food-waste">Impact of food waste</h2>



Composting or recycling food certainly keeps landfills clean, but we should also consider the resources consumed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/increasing-plant-based-food-production-would-have-extremely-positive-impact/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">food production</a>. 



“When we waste food, we’re wasting all the resources it takes to grow that food, including energy, water, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/human-waste-could-be-used-as-sustainable-fertilizer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fertilizer</a>," noted the researchers.



"Meanwhile, wasted food represents 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-many-states-are-not-reaching-their-targets">Many states are not reaching their targets</h2>



The researchers evaluated the states’ potential to reduce food waste across four policy areas: prevention, rescue, repurposing, and recycling.



The findings suggest that recycling policies have a high diversion potential, but many states are still not reaching their targets.



Among all the states, only California, Vermont, and Arizona are on track to achieve the reduction goal.



Using the revised EPA definition that leaves out recycling, states could divert as little as 11 pounds to as high as 30 pounds per person. 



Nevertheless, the amount of food waste generated by Americans would still be around 328 pounds per person annually. This figure is double the federal target.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-turning-the-focus-to-waste-prevention">Turning the focus to waste prevention</h2>



The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/covid-19s-impact-on-life-expectancy-is-worse-than-anticipated/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">COVID-19</a> pandemic may have played a role in the recent rise of food waste. People were more cautious about food waste during the initial lockdown phase. However, with the resumption of normal activities, old habits may be creeping in.



“When state policies focus on recycling, it’s very easy to think we’re addressing the food waste problem. Recycling food waste is important but not the only solution, nor should it be the first,” said Kakadellis.



The researchers passionately believe that policies should focus more on waste prevention and rescue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-role-of-consumer-behavior-in-waste-reduction">Role of consumer behavior in waste reduction</h2>



While policies and recycling efforts dominate discussions on food waste, individual habits and consumer awareness play a pivotal role in reducing waste at its source. 



Studies reveal that households account for a significant portion of food waste, often due to over-purchasing, improper storage, or a lack of understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-develop-smart-food-packaging-show-contamination/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">expiration labels</a>. 



For example, confusion over "best by" and "use by" dates leads many to discard perfectly edible food.



Educating consumers about mindful shopping, meal planning, and storage techniques could have a profound impact. 



Initiatives like community food-sharing apps and workshops can further help households reduce waste and redirect surplus food to those in need.



By promoting greater awareness and equipping consumers with practical tools, the U.S. could make significant strides in meeting its 2030 food waste reduction goal. 



However, without widespread behavioral changes, the collective effort required to cut waste in half may remain elusive.

Carbon storage in Earth’s deep seas continues to reveal surprising complexities, as scientists uncover more about the intricate processes of our oceans. 



These vast underwater ecosystems play a pivotal role in regulating our planet's climate, with microscopic organisms often driving major biogeochemical cycles. 



One such discovery comes from a recent study led by the <a href="https://noc.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK's National Oceanography Centre</a> (NOC).



The research team offers a fresh perspective on the role that a unique group of microscopic algae play in carbon sequestration - the natural storage of carbon in the ocean.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-carbon-storage-in-the-southern-ocean">Carbon storage in the Southern Ocean</h2>



Microscopic algae known as diatoms play a significant role in pulling carbon down into the deep ocean, particularly in the Southern Ocean, which holds about a third of the organic carbon stored in the world's oceans.



Diatoms carry distinct dense, silica-based structures that resemble petite glass houses. 



Scientists have long believed these structures provide enough weight - or ballast - for the diatoms to sink into deeper waters, dragging carbon along with them into the deep blue depths.



"The ocean plays a key role in the global <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-plankton-are-key-players-in-carbon-cycle-regulation/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">carbon cycle</a>, with tiny, microscopic plants taking up billions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere every year," said Dr. Sari Giering, Research Lead at NOC. 



"For years, it has been believed that this group of plankton - diatoms - play a crucial role in efficiently transporting carbon to the deep ocean, where it is held out of contact with the atmosphere."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-reconsidering-the-biological-carbon-pump">Reconsidering the biological carbon pump</h2>



Diatoms and other types of phytoplankton absorb carbon near the sea surface. This process is part of what's known as the biological carbon pump - a series of processes that funnel this carbon to the deep ocean.



But according to recent findings from the NOC study, the diatom skeletons don't quite make the long descent. Instead, they linger near the surface, while carbon journeys to the deep ocean through other, yet unidentified means.



"We now understand that diatoms are not always contributing as heavily to the Southern Ocean’s carbon pump as we once thought," said Dr. Giering. "This means there are unknown or poorly measured processes happening in the deep ocean that we need to learn more about.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-ocean-carbon-storage">The future of ocean carbon storage</h2>



Scientists have been increasingly worried that ocean warming could impact diatom productivity and thus, reduce the effectiveness of the biological carbon pump in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/southern-ocean-absorbs-more-co2-than-previously-thought/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Southern Ocean</a>. 



However, this recent study suggests that these changes might not greatly impact the carbon storage capacity of the Southern Ocean.



“The Southern Ocean is vulnerable to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-warming-will-likely-continue-for-centuries/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean warming</a>, which may alter the availability of nutrients and reduce diatom numbers in the future,” said Jack Williams, a post-graduate researcher at the University of Southampton. “But our results suggest these changes may not impact the strength of Southern Ocean carbon storage as much as previously thought."



Carbon continues to descend to the ocean's depth, which suggests that there are yet undiscovered processes occurring in the "twilight zone" of the ocean.



Unveiling these processes is crucial for accurately predicting how the oceans may store carbon in the future. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-twilight-zone-a-frontier-of-discovery">The twilight zone: A frontier of discovery</h2>



The twilight zone, a mid-ocean layer spanning depths of 100 to 1,000 meters, has emerged as a critical area of interest for scientists studying carbon storage. Despite its name, this zone is far from a lifeless void.

Recent findings suggest that much of the carbon transported into the deep ocean originates in this layer, bypassing the mechanisms traditionally associated with surface plankton like diatoms.



In this dimly lit zone, carbon is carried by sinking particles known as marine snow - aggregates of organic material, dead plankton, and other detritus. However, the exact processes enabling this descent remain elusive.



The twilight zone acts as a gatekeeper, determining how much carbon reaches the ocean depths. Understanding these pathways is vital for improving climate models and predicting how oceanic carbon storage will respond to global warming.



Ongoing research into the twilight zone could hold the key to unlocking the ocean's full carbon sequestration potential, providing insights that may redefine conservation strategies and our approach to mitigating climate change.

Some devised thick walls that absorbed heat by day and released it at night.&nbsp;

Some designers suggest that reintroducing features like operable windows, thicker walls, or rooftop shade structures might help with indoor temperature control and lower energy consumption at the same time.



Studies indicate that extremely hot summers are occurring more <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2822854" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">frequently</a>. Placing more emphasis on passive cooling could reduce the stress on power grids and keep people safer when the grid goes down.

Yet people who live in the world’s driest and hottest places have been testing these approaches for a long time, and their successes can offer strong guidance.

The ocean, which covers 70% of Earth’s surface, is reaching unprecedented high temperatures - not just at the surface but throughout the upper 2,000 meters (6,561 feet).



A new study led by Lijing Cheng, a professor in the <a href="http://english.iap.cas.cn/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Institute of Atmospheric Physics</a> at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, brings this alarming fact into sharp focus.



“The broken records in the ocean have become a broken record,”&nbsp;said Professor Cheng, who led a research team of 54 scientists from seven countries.



The research highlights the critical role ocean warming plays in shaping life on Earth and the climate’s future trajectory.

The ocean plays a critical role in Earth's climate system by acting as its primary heat reservoir. This regulation occurs as the ocean transfers heat and moisture into the atmosphere, influencing everything from rainfall to storm intensity.



“To know what is happening to the climate, the answer is in the ocean,”&nbsp;explained Professor John Abraham from the <a href="https://www.stthomas.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of St. Thomas</a>, emphasizing the ocean's central role in understanding climate changes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-troubling-trend-in-the-ocean">Troubling trend in the ocean</h2>



Research from three international teams confirmed a troubling trend: ocean heat content (OHC) reached record levels in 2024. The data shows that the upper layers of the ocean continue to absorb unprecedented amounts of heat.



From 2023 to 2024 alone, ocean heat content increased by a staggering 16 zettajoules (ZJ). To put this in perspective, this is roughly 140 times the total electricity generated by the entire world in 2023.

Warmer ocean waters amplify extreme weather by increasing atmospheric water vapor - a powerful greenhouse gas. This phenomenon intensifies storms, droughts, wildfires, and flooding events.



“The main way the ocean continues to influence the climate is through accompanying increases in water vapor in the atmosphere,”&nbsp;explained Dr. Kevin Trenberth from the <a href="https://ncar.ucar.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Center for Atmospheric Research</a>. 



The result is a vicious cycle of climate extremes, including hurricanes, typhoons, and record heatwaves.

Record ocean warming in 2024 is a warning for our planet

For many years, scientists believed that prehistoric kangaroos in Australia had specialized diets, relying specifically on certain types of plants or vegetation for their survival. This idea suggested that they were unable to adapt to changes in their environment, such as shifts in climate or vegetation patterns. 



When the kangaroos' preferred food sources became scarce, it was assumed that their dietary inflexibility contributed to their extinction. This theory placed dietary specialization as a key reason for the disappearance of some kangaroo species during the Pleistocene epoch.



However, recent research challenges these assumptions, suggesting that these marsupials were more resilient than we initially realized.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diverse-diets-of-prehistoric-kangaroos"> Diverse diets of prehistoric kangaroos</h2>



The study was carried out by experts from <a href="https://www.flinders.edu.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flinders University</a> and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (<a href="https://www.magnt.net.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MAGNT</a>). 



The researchers used cutting-edge techniques to analyze the microscopic patterns of wear on fossilized kangaroo teeth. These patterns revealed the types of food the kangaroos ate.



The results showed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/giant-kangaroos-of-the-past-didnt-hop-they-walked-on-all-fours/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prehistoric kangaroos</a> were not limited to specific types of food. Instead, they were generalists, capable of eating a wide variety of plants. This flexibility in diet helped them survive environmental changes over time.



Focusing on fossils from the Victoria Fossil Cave at the Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area in South Australia, the experts analyzed kangaroo diets across 12 extinct species and compared them with 17 modern species.



The Naracoorte region contains the richest and most diverse fossil deposits of kangaroos from the Pleistocene epoch, making it an ideal location for this research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flexible-diets-helped-kangaroos-survive">Flexible diets helped kangaroos survive</h2>



“Our study shows that most prehistoric kangaroos at Naracoorte had broad diets. This dietary flexibility likely played a key role in their resilience during <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/protemnodon-kangaroo-fossils-may-explain-their-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">past changes</a> in climate,” explained lead researcher Dr. Sam Arman.



Contrary to previous assumptions, the study revealed that most species were mixed feeders, capable of consuming both shrubs and grasses.



“The distinctive short-faced kangaroo anatomy led to a widespread view that sthenurines were unable to adapt their diets when climate change altered vegetation patterns, leading to their extinction,” said study co-author Professor Gavin Prideaux.



However, the findings suggest that their ability to consume a wide range of foods provided a survival advantage during periods of scarcity.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-complex-extinction-dynamics">Complex extinction dynamics </h2>



While the ability to adapt their diets likely helped prehistoric kangaroos survive for a time, it wasn’t the only factor influencing their fate. 



The extinction of these megafaunal kangaroos also involved other challenges, such as their large body size, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/not-all-kangaroo-ancestors-hopped-as-a-means-of-locomotion/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how they moved</a> (locomotion), and their interactions with early humans, who may have hunted them or altered their habitats. 



To better understand these complex extinction dynamics, the researchers plan to study fossils from other Pleistocene sites. They will focus on the critical period between 60,000 and 40,000 years ago - a time when many large animal species disappeared.



This broader investigation could reveal how different factors worked together to drive kangaroo extinctions.



"Identifying what drove the late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions on the continents remains one of the most contested topics in historical science," noted the study authors. 



"This is especially so in Australia, which lost 90% of its large species by 40,000 years ago, more than half of them kangaroos."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-insights-into-ecosystem-vulnerabilities">Insights into ecosystem vulnerabilities</h2>

“Understanding the resilience of ancient species helps contextualize why Australia has been so vulnerable to introduced large mammals like pigs, camels, and deer,” noted Professor Prideaux.



Dr. Arman uses a relatable analogy to describe dietary flexibility: “Most of the time, I don’t need to engage four-wheel drive, but this capability becomes crucial when I do need it.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extinction-of-australia-s-megafauna">Extinction of Australia’s megafauna </h2>



The research, funded by the <a href="https://www.arc.gov.au" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australian Research Council</a>, reflects a long-standing partnership between Flinders University and MAGNT.



The research also honors the traditional custodians of the Naracoorte region, the Meintangk, Marditjali, and Potaruwutj peoples, and acknowledges the contributions of volunteers and students in collecting and preparing specimens.



The study marks an essential step in understanding the resilience of prehistoric kangaroos, their adaptable diet and the complex interplay of factors that led to the extinction of Australia’s megafauna.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”

The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes the first comprehensive estimate of carbon density in the Saharan, Sahel, and Sudanian zones of Africa. In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> features a visual dataset of.methane emissions from wetlands across the globe. Atmospheric methane levels have reached record highs in recent years, and wetlands are a major source of these emissions.&nbsp;



"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
