Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.

What if there was a way to capture carbon dioxide and convert it to methanol fuel on a large scale – easily and affordably?

The greenhouse gas carbon dioxide can currently be turned into methanol, a “clean” liquid fuel, but the process is requires a complex and costly series of steps. It’s a solution to rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but not an economically feasible or efficient one.

Dr. Karl Johnson, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s <a href="http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/">Swanson School of Engineering</a>, and Dr. Jingyun Ye, a postdoctoral associate, didn’t want to let that transformation of greenhouse gas go, though.

They believed that the ability to convert carbon dioxide to methanol on a large scale could solve two problems at once, Johnson said, reducing carbon emissions and creating clean fuel. Carbon dioxide has been linked to climate change, and is often produced by use of fossil fuels.

The pair teamed up to see whether they could <a href="http://pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/ArticleLanding/2016/CY/C6CY01245K#!divAbstract">create a catalyst</a> that would make the conversion process of carbon dioxide to methanol more efficient and cost-effective. Their goal was to reduce the number of steps and materials needed to transform the greenhouse gas into liquid fuel.

Johnson and Ye’s hoped to design a single material that could both capture and convert carbon dioxide to methanol. 

With computer modeling, they were able to design a potential catalyst that uses a microporous metal organic framework and dihydrogen – molecular hydrogen made up of two atoms – to convert carbon dioxide to methanol. The framework breaks down the dihydrogen in such a way that it binds to the CO2 and reforms as methanol. 

They published their design in the journal <a href="http://pubs.rsc.org/en/journals/journalissues/cy">Royal Society of Chemistry Catalysis Science &amp; Technology</a>. Their research was funded by a grant from the <a href="http://www.energy.gov/">U.S. Department of Energy</a>.

Engineers design catalyst to transform carbon dioxide to methanol

What if there was a way to capture carbon dioxide...

This holiday season, a few families will be rockin’ around the stolen Christmas tree. Theft of Christmas trees is a growing problem, and at a woodland park in Scotland, it meant the death of five “extremely rare” Serbian conifers.

<a href="http://www.kinnoull.org.uk/">Kinnoull Woodland Park</a>, just across the River Tay from Perth, Scotland, is home to hundreds of trees, an arboretum full of specimens that can be planted in the garden, and miles of trail.

It is also the site of a project by the <a href="http://www.pkct.org/">Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust</a> to protect threatened conifers – evergreen trees like cedars, firs, pines, and junipers – from extinction. 

Last week, thieves stole five of those rare trees, specimens of the species Picea omorika. Officials said that although it appears they tried to dig up the five spruces, most of the roots were left behind and the trees were probably killed.

“Until these trees were stolen, we probably had the greatest concentration of these trees outside of their native range,” PKCT Project Officer Tim Christian said in a statement on the organization’s website. “Because of the nature of these collections, the trees are irreplaceable: there is no way to recover the missing genetic material.”

Each of the trees was grown from seed collected from the species’ native range in Serbia, and represents years of work, he said.

Collecting these particular seeds involved traveling to remote locations, and often climbing steep trails or rock faces to ensure a wide variety of genetic material for the <a href="https://www.pkct.org/conifer-conservation-programe">Perthshire Big Tree Country Conifer Conservation Programme</a>. The program then sends seeds back to programs in each tree’s native range so that each species can be preserved in its home country.

While it’s rare for Christmas tree thieves to target priceless specimens from conservation projects, the theft of Christmas trees is not a new problem.

In a surprisingly similar case the Kinnoull Woodland Park theft last week, two valuable trees were swiped from <a href="http://www.cornellbotanicgardens.org/">Cornell Botanic Gardens</a> in 2014 – and it wasn’t the first time. 

"We know from past history that from around Thanksgiving to Christmas time, from time to time, we have trees stolen," gardener Phil Syphrit told <a href="http://ithacavoice.com/2014/12/grinches-steal-20-foot-white-spruce-christmas-tree-cornell-plantations/">The Ithaca Voice</a> at the time. 

One of the trees was a 20-foot spruce, and the other was a 3-foot red cedar. Syphrit believed the trees were stolen to serve as Christmas trees, he told the newspaper, and <a href="https://www.cornell.edu/">Cornell University</a> seemed to agree.

“[Cornell Botanic Gardens] collections have been carefully cultivated to provide visitors with a world class public garden experience.  When a tree or plant is lost to theft it is like losing a unique work of art,” a statement from the university read. “Please go to your local Christmas tree stand to purchase a tree that was harvested for this purpose.”

The same year, a Maine Christmas tree farm reported the theft of <a href="http://www.centralmaine.com/2014/12/14/christmas-trees-stolen-from-norridgewock-tree-farm/">more than 30 trees</a> over several days, and a club in Georgia that fundraises for children with illnesses and youth sports teams with a Christmas tree sale was the victim of a <a href="http://chronicle.augusta.com/news-metro-crime-courts/2016-10-18/community-assists-north-augusta-optimist-club-after-christmas">nearly 50-tree heist</a>.

Last year, a thief in Waterbury, Conn. made off with 10 trees from a lot at <a href="http://wtnh.com/2015/12/01/christmas-tree-theft-at-waterbury-school/">Saints Peter and Paul School</a> in two separate thefts. The stolen trees were intended for a school fundraiser. 

In most cases, though, these kinds of crimes rarely shatter the Christmas spirit. 

In the U.S., Christmas tree farms don’t report many thefts, said High Whaley, spokesman for the <a href="http://www.realchristmastrees.org/">National Christmas Tree Association</a>. There might be the occasional theft from a lot or a farm, he said, but the NCTA hasn’t heard of anything on a larger scale.

“It’s not a nationwide trend,” Whaley said.

Despite the availability of artificial Christmas trees, real trees are still very popular. The <a href="http://www.bctga.co.uk/">British Christmas Tree Growers Association</a> estimates that about 6 million trees are sold each Christmas season in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In the U.S., 25.9 million real trees were sold in 2015, according to the National Christmas Tree Association, more than double the number of fake trees.

Not all wood poaching is for so innocent a reason as cutting down an evergreen to celebrate the Christmas season, however. In California and the Pacific Northwest, “burl poaching” has become a major problem in old growth redwood forests.

Burl poachers cut large portions out of the trunks of redwood trees, then sell the wood to furniture makers and other artisans. The swirls of the wood grain and large size of old-growth redwood burls make them particularly attractive to poachers. Cutting them out can badly damage a tree and sometimes lead to its death.

In 2015, four men were accused of illegally cutting down <a href="http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Feds-Music-wood-poachers-targeted-6427888.php">old-growth maple trees</a> in Washington state and using it to produce and sell high-priced musical instruments.

Officials estimate about 1,000 cords of wood or more are <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/2014/02/03/wood-poaching-santa-cruz-mountains-little-known-but-widespread-crime/">illegally logged</a> in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California each year.

And illegal logging is a major cause of deforestation around the world. Illegal operations account for 80 percent of logging in Peru, 85 percent of logging in Myanmar, and nearly 65 percent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to the <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/initiatives/stopping-illegal-logging">World Wildlife Fund</a>.

Some parks are taking unique approaches to combatting wood poaching. In 2014, the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/redw/">Redwood State and National Parks</a> in California gated one of the main roads through the park and began closing it each night, after several burl poaching incidents.

At the Kinnoull Woodland Park program, officials are now weighing the use of surveillance cameras to protect their trees.

Grinch steals five rare 'Christmas' trees from Scottish park

California biologists have been working out the solution to a slippery problem: why can salmon embryos raised in laboratories survive higher temperatures than their river-born cousins?

The team of scientists from the <a href="http://www.noaa.gov/">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> and the <a href="https://www.ucsc.edu/">University of California, Santa Cruz</a> hoped to work out the answer to that dilemma so scientists could ensure better survival rates for the fish. 

They suspected the answer to their question might rely on oxygen and water flow. 

The <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ele.12705/abstract">new research</a> focused on the endangered Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River to determine which temperature conditions are best for their eggs and young. The team began by reviewing laboratories, working with the hypothesis that Sacramento River conditions have never been warm enough to cause high mortality rates among salmon embryos.

They were in for a splash of cold water on their hypothesis, though. Data from the field showed that temperature-related mortality among the young salmon exceeded 75 percent in some years, even in temperatures that lab-raised salmon survived.

So they dove into the problem, determined to find out what caused the difference. What they discovered was that the laboratory studies didn’t take into account a major factor in salmon egg health: water flow. 

In the laboratory temperature studies, water in the tanks often flowed two to three times faster than it does in the Sacramento River and its tributaries, where salmon spawn in the wild. The faster water flows meant more oxygen for the lab-raised salmon embryos than their wild counterparts, which meant they could withstand warmer waters.

By studying laboratory and field studies, the NOAA and UC Santa Cruz team was able to work out that the Sacramento River’s slower flow meant embryos began dying at temperatures about 3 degrees Celsius lower than the lab embryos.

The new study also offered an answer to why salmon eggs laid in cold weather are often larger than those laid in warmer seasons. Larger eggs need more oxygen than smaller ones, the researchers found, and colder water holds more oxygen than warmer. 

It wasn’t just salmon that showed this egg size trend, either; the researchers looked at 180 different species of fish and found that fish consistently lay larger eggs in high-flow water conditions, even if temperatures are warmer. They also found that some fish have adapted to warmer temperatures by staying at their nests to fan the eggs with their tails. 

The Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River are winter-run salmon, but spawn in the summer months – the only salmon on the Pacific Coast to spawn in summer. Because of this schedule and their preference for cold water spawning sites, the fish are dependent on California’s snowmelt-fed rivers and creeks, <a href="http://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/stories/2015/09/spotlight_chinook_salmon.html">according to NOAA</a>.

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1461-0248">Ecology Letters</a>.

It’s called “the critical zone” and it refers to the section of Earth that is most crucial to human survival. The critical zone exists between the tops of the tallest trees and stretches down into soil and rock. The bottom of the critical zone is marked by the start of the weathering zone, which is the area where soil is made. 

The critical zone truly is everything for humans. It’s where we grow our food and what we build our homes on top of. It holds our water and supports all life forms. 

<a href="http://www.psu.edu">Pennsylvania State University</a> professor Henry Lin recently published a review on research about the critical zone in the <a href="http://vzj.geoscienceworld.org/">Vandose Zone Journal</a>. Lin argues that the critical zone is more than just a physical space, that it’s also a research approach that can shed new light on understand Earth’s layers from a macro perspective. 

"The critical zone approach provides a framework for combining below ground and above ground, nonliving and living, and space and time in our ecosystems," said Lin. "To truly understand this zone, research from many areas must be mixed into one framework. It includes perspectives on time, depth, and coupling."

All three concepts affect the critical zone in different ways. Time is an important framework in order to understand soil changes over time and how this has affected waterflow and vegetation growth. Depth is significant because of how much of the zone exists underground where we processes occur that we cannot see. And a coupling framework allows for the study of how the zone impacts the larger ecosystem and our natural resources. 

Human activity has caused both intentional and unintentional changes to the critical zone. Lin argues that further study of how the critical zone has changed overtime can allow us to more accurately predict what will happen in the future. 

"With our ongoing development, the critical zone is under ever-increasing pressures from humans, such as rapid growth of human and livestock population, land use increases, and global environmental changes," said Lin. "Possible negative effects include degraded soil health and water quality. It's important to continue closely studying this area."

Why Earth’s critical zone is so very critical

It’s called “the critical zone” and it refers to the...

Clams don’t speak, so what can they tell scientists about the ocean? A lot, it turns out – the sea’s history is written in clam shells.

Dr. Alan Wanamaker, now a professor at <a href="https://www.iastate.edu/">Iowa State University</a>, learned how to read that record while he was working as a postdoctoral researcher in Wales.

At <a href="https://www.bangor.ac.uk/">Bangor University</a>, he was put in charge of sorting through thousands of Arctica islandica clams gathered from the North Icelandic Shelf, located in the North Atlantic. The goal was to study the clam shells and use them to create a 1,000-year-long record of life in the marine climate of that area.

Wanamaker processed the clams by sectioning shells, saving portions of each one in epoxy, radiocarbon dating, determining oxygen isotopes, and more. 

He also looked for clam growth rings. Like trees, clam shells grow a little each year, and how the shell grows in a certain year can tell scientists about the ocean conditions they were living in, including temperature. Since some of the clams were alive – and the species can live for up to 500 years – Wanamaker was able to work backwards and overlap specimens to build a chronological record.

When he completed his postdoctoral studies, the work was taken up by Dr. Paul Butler of Bangor University and Dr. David Reynolds, a postdoctoral research associate at <a href="http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/">Cardiff University</a>.

Now, the three and eight others who worked on the project have <a href="http://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms13502">published their research</a>, with Reynolds taking the role of lead author. The work provides a record of more than 1,000 years of marine history, with a focus on the oxygen isotopes. 

The work begins to fill a major gap in data about ocean climate through history, the researchers said. Because of lack of data, there has been debate in recent years over what role, if any, the North Atlantic plays in climate change, they said. 

Their research indicates that the North Atlantic has played a role in previous transitions in surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere, the researchers said.

One interesting item from the data, Wanamaker said, was that for most of the chronology, ocean temperature changes preceded atmospheric changes. However, after the Industrial Revolution began in the 1800s, that flipped, he said; for the past 200 years, atmospheric temperatures have led any oceanic warming or cooling.

Even without that important data, however, the study would make history for ocean science. It’s the first time that scientists have been able to piece together a year-by-year chronology of ocean conditions for such a long period of time, Wanamaker said.

Their study was published online by the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>. Funding was provided by the <a href="http://www.nerc.ac.uk/">United Kingdom's Natural Environment Research Council</a> and the <a href="https://europa.eu/european-union/index_en">European Union</a>.

This week it was announced that Indonesia has expanded its existing moratorium on the conversion of peatlands into plantations. Pulp wood and palm oil companies had been draining peat swamps which dried out the land and significantly worsened dry season fires. The fires not only destroy Indonesia’s stunning tropical forests, but also release large amounts of carbon contained in peat. The result was a one-two punch to environmental preservation: the destruction of rainforests couple with massive greenhouse gas emissions.

The moratorium amendment was announced on Monday by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. The legislation now extends to peatlands of any depth and also requires companies to restore lands they have already converted. 

The <a href="http://www.wri.org/">World Resources Institute</a> estimates that the mandate could result in Indonesia reducing its carbon emissions by 7.8 gigatons over the next 15 years. That is roughly the amount greenhouse gases that the United States emits in one year.

Deforestation has been an ongoing problem for Indonesia. According to a 2012 study published in the <a href="http://www.nature.com/nclimate/index.html">Nature Climate Change</a> journal, Indonesia was clearing 2 million acres of forest per year, more than any other country. According to Arief Wijaya, a forests expert from the <a href="http://www.wri.org">World Resources Institute</a>, the expanded moratorium is especially crucial in protecting the Papua region of Indonesia. This area is known as the “last frontier of natural forests” that has remained mostly untouched by humans.

The dry season typically lasts from July until October. Last year, the dry season fires were the worst since 1997, and created a smoggy haze in the sky above Indonesia, Singapore, southern Thailand, and Malaysia. According to a study performed by a team of scientists from <a href="http://www.harvard.edu">Harvard </a>and <a href="http://www.columbia.edu">Columbia</a>, toxic particulate matter in the haze hastened the death of over 100,000 people. According to a statement released by Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Ministry, the primary cause of the fires was corporate mismanagement of peatlands.

The team of geophysicists found that as the last ice age ended about 10,000 years ago, temperatures in Antarctica rose more than twice as much as temperatures worldwide. The team was led by <a href="http://berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a> glacier expert Dr. Kurt Cuffey and <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Survey</a> research geophysicist Dr. Gary Clow.

Or, in hard numbers, the temperatures in Antarctica rose an average of 20 degrees Fahrenheit over the continent, while temperatures around the world averaged only 7 degrees higher than the previous norm.

The study’s calculations match up with what climate models predict for the frozen southern continent, as well as scientists’ past estimates of how the end of the ice age affected Antarctica, Cuffey said.

That gives credence to climatologists’ predictions that Antarctica will warm twice as much as the rest of the Earth during the current warming period, though it may take a century or two to see the full effects, he said.

The scientists measured the current temperature of 20,000-year-old glacier ice in Antarctica, then used their knowledge about how quickly pure ice heats up to calculate the glacier’s temperature at various points over the past several thousand years. They repeated this process with other, older ice, and used a technique developed by Cuffey to combine the resulting data for more accurate temperature estimates. 

While temperatures at both the North and South poles rose more than elsewhere, the Arctic warmed more slowly than the Antarctic, probably due to the huge sheets of ice in the north, and changes in ocean currents and Earth’s orbit that sped warming in the Southern Hemisphere, the researchers said.

The new study, the first thorough calculations of temperature changes in Antarctica at the end of the last ice age, was published online by the journal <a href="http://www.pnas.org/">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

New Delhi’s dirty air is finally becoming a problem for the city’s residents. Air pollution is a growing problem in the country, and Indians are beginning to look for solutions. 

Delhi, which includes New Delhi, made a name for itself as the world’s most city in 2013, when the <a href="http://www.who.int/">World Health Organization</a> released a list of cities with the worst levels of PM2.5, particles of soot and other substances small enough to get embedded in the lungs. PM2.5 comes from vehicle and industrial exhaust, agricultural burning, and other sources.

It wasn’t the only Indian city to make the list, either. Patna, Gwalior, and Raipur came in second, third, and fourth, respectively, and Lucknow also made the top 10.

When it comes to PM10, slightly larger particles like concrete dust, Delhi comes in third after Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Ma’ameer, Bahrain – barely.

Delhi’s air problems are a combination of the city’s human activity and its natural environment. Human-caused pollution comes from vehicles, industry, construction, and residential heating, along with burning of the city’s waste. Natural sources include dust and sea salt, and Delhi’s location leads to cool air “inversions” that trap both types of air pollution in the city.

Indians are starting to take notice. In 2015, SmartAir expanded its low-cost air purifier business from China to India. It sold 1,000 units of its basic air purifier model last year; last month, it sold 500 in the first half alone. 

Vogmask, a California-based pollution mask company, has also seen brisk sales, as have local companies dedicated to assessing air quality in homes and offices and suggesting solutions.

Indians have been slow to adopt changes to combat air pollution, but the dirty air has become more obvious in recent years – on cold days, smog is visible and can often be tasted in New Delhi – and awareness about the health effects has grown.

Health effects of air pollution range from eye, nose, and throat irritation to heart disease, reduced lung function, asthma attacks, and even death in some people, according to <a href="https://airnow.gov/">AirNow</a>, a U.S. air quality tracking system. 

In the week following Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, pollution in Delhi spiked sharply, and so did sales of masks and air purifiers. 

Delhi experts said the trend is unlikely to last unless the media and companies continue to raise awareness in sunny weather, when the air seems clear – but pollution is still high above what the WHO and India’s government deem safe levels.

El Niño brought severe drought to southern Africa this year – the worst dry spell in 35 years in some places. Few are as hard hit as southern Madagascar, which was already struggling with three years of little rain and crop failures.

The drought is bad news for the lower regions of the African continent. About 14 million people in the region are in need of food aid as harvests falter and in some cases fail, with Malawi and Zimbabwe struggling to provide food.

But southern Madagascar saw almost complete failures of three of its major crops in the past year. Maize, cassava and rice harvests are only about 5 percent of what they were last year, and 2015 harvests were also hit by drought, according to the <a href="http://www.un.org/en/">United Nations</a>. 

Nearly a million people in the country face severe hunger, aid groups said, and 1.2 million are food insecure. Farming is one of the anchors of the island nation’s economy, along with fishing and forestry.

Madagascar already struggles with food security. Although rice is the country’s main crop, Madagascar imports rice. The country’s residents have the fourth highest rate of malnutrition in the world, with nearly half of all children under five suffering from malnourishment, according to the <a href="http://www.wfp.org/">U.N. World Food Programme</a>.

Many families in the country have turned to selling off land and possessions or even begging to feed themselves, the World Food Programme said, while others have begun eating cactus fruit out of desperation. The U.N. agency has had to cut relief rations because of lack of funding, it said.

Madagascar did receive some much needed rain last week – but it’s not unlikely to be enough to help this year’s crops. Farmers planted seed in the hope that the rain would cause them to grow, but without more rain, those seeds will be wasted, said Joshua Poole, Madagascar representative for <a href="http://www.crs.org/">Catholic Relief Services</a>.

You may have seen them around your city: bearded young men with suspenders holding up their skinny jeans, and women with trendy haircuts in plaid shirts and leggings. They bring fresh business to coffee shops and artisan bakeries, shop at the local farmers market, and boost the indy music scene. Maybe this sounds like you.

But hipsters also drive up housing prices – but the tradeoff is that they may also help the local environment. So what makes a hipster city? And which hipster havens are the greenest?

We analyzed a few key factors – the presence of trendy neighborhoods, greenhouse gas emissions, walkability, bikeability, available incentives, and more – so you don’t have to. Read on for the most eco-friendly hipster havens in the U.S.:

Boston has a lot of nicknames: Beantown, the Cradle of Liberty, the Hub of the Universe. It’s also called America’s Walking City, and <a href="https://www.redfin.com/how-walk-score-works">WalkScore</a> rated Boston as the third most walkable city in America in 2016. It also scores high for its low greenhouse gas emissions per capita, and top scores for public transportation and bike-friendliness. Like Boston, San Francisco boasts low carbon emissions, high walkability, good public transportation, and a certain je ne sais quoi. Residents also have plenty of incentive programs if they want to greenify their homes, and more than a dozen farmers markets to choose from. The Mission District, with its <a href="http://www.precitaeyes.org/">colorful murals</a> and fantastic Mexican restaurants, is a favorite neighborhood, but the Financial District and the Marina have plenty to offer, too. However, cost of living can be high in the City by the Bay.

</ol>
The Windy City is also a top scorer, though greenhouse gas emissions are just a little higher than the first two options on our list. It makes up for it with top scores in walkable neighborhoods, cycling options, and public transportation. Cost of living is more affordable, too, with the average home selling for about $250,000, according to <a href="https://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Chicago-Illinois/market-trends/">Trulia</a>.

</ol>
The City of Brotherly Love has a number of rising neighborhoods, along with the established hipster zip of Northern Liberties, aka NoLibs. One potential draw to the latter neighborhood: it’s where Edgar Allen Poe once lived. Like most of the cities on this list, Philadelphia rates high in walkability and public transportation, along with favorite draws like coffee shops and food trucks.

</ol>
This longtime hipster hot spot is a borough of the most walkable city in the U.S. New York also has one of the best subway systems in the world, which plays home to its <a href="http://web.mta.info/mta/aft/muny/">Music Under New York</a> program. And, of course, Brooklyn residents have full access to all of New York’s environmental incentive programs, along with hundreds of restaurants featuring world cuisine.

</ol>
Berkeley’s trendy crowd may be a little younger and more vibrant than most. University of California, Berkeley has been ranked among the most hipster campuses in America by <a href="http://www.collegemagazine.com/10-hipster-colleges/">College Magazine</a> for years. It has a new feather for its beanie, though: <a href="http://www.realtytrac.com/news/home-prices-and-sales/top-30-hipster-zips-for-profitable-home-flips/">RealtyTrac</a> named Northwest Berkeley one of the hottest hipster zips for flipping houses in March of this year. It’s also easy to get around without getting into a car.

</ol>
Minneapolis is the top city for cycling in the U.S., according to WalkScore. Head over to <a href="http://angrycatfishbicycle.com/">Angry Catfish Bicycles + Coffee Bar</a> to dip your toes in the local scene. Housing prices are on the rise in the Twin Cities region, but with an average home price <a href="https://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Minneapolis-Minnesota/market-trends/">slightly above $230,000</a>, Minneapolis is still one of the more affordable places to live on the list.

 	<li> Los Angeles, California (tie)</li>
</ol>
The City of Angels was once one of the smoggiest cities in the U.S. Now, the city has dropped its greenhouse gas emissions to just 8 metric tons per person each year, according to the <a href="http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/sled/#/">U.S. Department of Energy</a>. The city is full of innovative restaurants and food trucks, and incredible arts and music scenes – but the average home will cost about $700,000, <a href="https://www.trulia.com/real_estate/Los_Angeles-California/market-trends/">Trulia</a> says. Favorite areas for hipsters are Silverlake, known for it’s large hill built homes and artisanal coffee shops. Echo Park notorious for it’s vibrant music community and weekly farmers markets and Highland Park which boasts a high walk score, artist's community and great public transport links. The original LA hipster zones of Hollywood and West Hollywood are still popular with eco-conscious city dwellers these areas host high walk scores, great public transport links, Griffith Park hiking opportunities and regular farmers markets.

</ol>
Wynwood has long been the top haven for hipsters in Miami, but Hialeah is offering some new competition for the trendiest hangout spot. Both are great spots to take in urban murals, from the <a href="http://www.thewynwoodwalls.com/">Wynwood Walls</a> to the <a href="http://leahartsdistrict.org/">Leah Arts District</a>. Cyclists may not care for Miami, but walkers and straphangers will be pleased.

</ol>
D.C. scores high in transportation and pretty well in most other areas when it comes to the environment. But when it comes to places where hipsters can combine their love of indie music, trendy bars, fashion and politics, nothing beats the nation’s capital. Make sure to check out the H Street corridor and Shaw for their restaurants and bars.

</ol>
Probably the most iconic hipster haven in the U.S., Seattle is also among the greenest. President-elect Donald Trump has long been suspicious of climate change. In 2012, he famously <a href="https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/265895292191248385">called it a Chinese hoax</a> on his Twitter account, and in 2014, he pointed to <a href="https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/427226424987385856">the abnormally cold winter</a> as evidence of that.

But in the weeks following Election Day, he has softened his stance, telling <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/">The New York Times</a> that he does, in fact, see “connectivity” between human activity and rising global temperatures. 

On Monday, his daughter Ivanka Trump – who is expected to play a role in his policy planning and has declared climate change one of her top issues – met with former Vice President Al Gore, a vocal climate change activist. To the surprise of many, including his own staff, Donald Trump sat in.

Earlier Monday, Trump spokesman Jason Miller told reporters that the president-elect would not be involved in the meeting. However, Gore told reporters that he had a “lengthy and very productive” chat with the soon-to-be leader of the U.S. after meeting with Ivanka Trump. 

In fact, Gore said, he spent more time with Donald Trump than Ivanka, and he plans to continue the conversation in the future.

It’s a change of stance for Gore, who before the election said that a Trump presidency would be “devastating” for the planet and the environment. 

Gore is a long-time climate change advocate. Ten years ago, he released his documentary about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth.” In 2007, he shared a Nobel Peace Prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work on the subject.

Gore didn’t offer any clues to the substance of his meeting with the Trumps, and climate change advocates said it’s unclear whether or how much President-elect Trump has changed his stance on the issue since Election Day.

Several of Trump’s Cabinet picks are global warming skeptics who have expressed doubt about whether humans could affect the Earth’s climate, and sometimes whether the climate is radically changing at all. 

And while Ivanka Trump has made it one of her issues, it’s unclear how much of a role she will be able to play in the Trump administration. The president-elect has said he will pass control of his businesses on to his children for the next four years to avoid conflicts of interest, which would likely limit Ivanka Trump’s involvement in her father’s presidency.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.

Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>

Imagine Earth as a giant snowball, frozen solid from the North Pole to the equator. This wasn't the plot of a science fiction movie – it was our planet's reality 700 million years ago during an extreme ice age that has puzzled scientists for decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-discovery">The discovery</h2>



Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Wetlands are a major source of methane emissions

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
