Plastic may not always float where we expect it. The ocean’s surface might look clean in some places, but far beneath the waves, a different story is unfolding. 



In the southeastern Mediterranean, the deep seafloor is turning into a massive storage ground for plastic packaging, especially bags. A new study shows how this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/large-retailers-are-replacing-plastic-bags-with-eco-friendly-paper-bags/">waste</a> ends up thousands of feet below the surface, and the answer isn’t as simple as trash just “sinking.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-plastic-in-the-deep-sea">Plastic in the deep sea</h2>



Plastic debris has entered every corner of the ocean, but previously, most of the research has concentrated on floating plastic or beach trash. That changed with this latest study, which took a closer look at what is occurring on the ocean floor. 



Scientists discovered that the Levant Basin - a deep section of the eastern <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/two-continents-meet-along-the-mediterranean-coastline/">Mediterranean</a> off the coasts of Israel, Egypt, and Turkey - is among the world's most contaminated deep-sea areas.



“We used trawls to survey the seafloor and we mainly found plastic bags and packaging that dominate the debris,” said Xing-Yu Li from the <a href="https://www.haifa.ac.il/?lang=en">University of Haifa</a>, the study’s lead author.



This raised a question: how does something so light - something meant to float - end up nearly a mile underwater?



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-forensic-approach-to-trash">A forensic approach to trash</h2>



To answer that, the team decided to treat each plastic item like a crime scene. Every piece of debris was carefully examined using a method called multi-marker analysis. 



This approach looks at everything about the plastic - size, shape, color, material, surface features, and even what kinds of things are stuck to it, like tar or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-organisms-may-adapt-to-climate-change-but-with-hidden-costs/">marine organisms</a>.



“In the multi-marker approach anything that is found on a piece of plastic is an evidence,” said Xing-yu. “We extracted as many evidence as possible from every piece of waste, more than many previous studies, to build a fuller, more detailed view of the bottom waste.”



Instead of just counting how much trash was found, this method helped researchers understand how it got there, why it sank, and where it might have come from.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-some-plastic-doesn-t-sink">Why some plastic doesn’t sink</h2>



Most of the plastics found were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">polyethylene</a> - the same material used in grocery bags. Normally, this kind of plastic floats. But when additives like calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) are mixed in during manufacturing, the plastic becomes heavier. 



Those with CaCO₃ sank closer to the shore. Others, without these additives, drifted farther out before eventually settling on the seafloor.



The study also revealed that the deep basin at over 3,000 feet deep acts like a trap. Pressure and fine sediments help keep the plastic down. 



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/biofilms-could-change-the-way-we-track-plastic-pollution/">Biofilms</a>, which are slimy layers formed by microbes, usually help weigh plastics down too, but they don’t grow well in this part of the sea. Instead, things like tar, sand, and tiny shells helped plastics stay put.



The scientists noted that these plastic films - while thin and lightweight - are ending up where they can do the most long-term damage. 



Even more troubling, the team found that some of this plastic could become buoyant again if disturbed, but because of how the deep sea works, that rarely happens. Once the plastic settles, it stays.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-where-the-trash-is-coming-from">Where the trash is coming from</h2>



The plastic pollution isn’t only from local beaches. According to the research, land-based sources from Egypt, Israel, and Turkey are a big part of the problem. 



Shipping also plays a role, especially in deeper waters. Surprisingly, fishing was not a major contributor - possibly due to strict Israeli regulations.



For years, scientists noticed high levels of plastic at the seafloor, but they didn’t fully understand why. 



“For years in our monitoring reports we have reported a high concentration of plastic debris in this area. It was an unsolved mystery as we know that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-floor-harbors-up-to-11-million-tons-of-plastic-debris/">plastic debris</a> should remain floating on the sea surface. Now we have a deep understanding of how it happens,” said Dr. Yael Segal from Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR). 



“The Eastern Mediterranean is the most polluted area in the world, and we must take action for the sake of the next generation.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-long-term-risks-to-marine-life">Long-term risks to marine life</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/grapevines-could-offer-a-breakthrough-alternative-to-plastic-packaging/">Plastic packaging</a> is cheap, easy to produce, and used globally - but it doesn’t go away. It breaks into smaller pieces and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years. 



Deep-sea habitats are already fragile, and adding plastic into the mix could disrupt food webs, introduce toxins, and harm species that haven’t even been fully studied yet.



“As the head of the national monitoring program, I see firsthand how plastic pollution is impacting the entire sea environment: beaches, water, sea bottom, and even local turtle populations,” said Dr. Segal.



Professor Revital Bookman said that the discovery is fascinating in the worst possible way. 



"The eastern Mediterranean is quietly turning into a deep-sea landfill. Plastics that we use for only a few minutes are ending up trapped for centuries, threatening deep marine ecosystems we barely understand," noted Professor Bookman. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-needs-to-happen-next">What needs to happen next</h2>



According to the researchers, this study changes how we should think about ocean pollution. Plastic doesn’t just float around until it hits a beach. It travels far, interacts with other pollutants like tar, and ends up in hidden places. 



“This previously overlooked dynamic necessitates a broader perspective on pollution processes in marine environments,” said Professor Bookman. 



“Without systematic deep-sea accounting, we risk underestimating the true environmental footprint of plastic pollution and misallocating mitigation efforts by neglecting offshore and deep-sea sinks.”



To deal with this, the experts call for coordinated efforts across the region. Countries that share the sea need to work together on monitoring, cleanup, and prevention. 



Without a shared strategy, plastics will continue piling up, silently choking one of the planet’s most mysterious ecosystems.

A new fossil fuel tax could limit climate change, a new study suggests.

Every year, more evidence of climate change pops up around the globe, from warming oceans and melting sea ice, to a 1.4-degree Fahrenheit rise in the Earth's air temperature since 1900, to the permanent migration of temperature-sensitive species.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, many of those changes can be tracked to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Most of that carbon dioxide comes from human activity, the NAS says – according to the organization's research, volcanic eruptions emit only 1 percent of the CO2 that human use of fossil fuels does.

Is it too late to slow climate change, or even halt in its tracks?

A new study published in the journal Anthropocene Review suggests that a consumer tax levy on fossil fuels could reduce the impact of climate change.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh believe that the levy, known as a Pigouvian tax, could encourage companies and countries to use fewer fossil fuels and look into greener alternatives.

Moneys collected by the tax levy would, under the researchers' model, be invested back into households – and this could be the key to its success. The household rebate encourages buyers to make their homes more energy efficient, and sellers respond to that new demand.

However, without any economic incentive to move away from fossil fuels, global temperatures are likely to continue rising, the researchers found. A similar fossil fuel tax program has already seen some success in British Columbia, Canada, they reported.

The study's authors considered the potential costs if climate change continues unchecked, and weighed them against the costs of adopting new, more environmentally friendly technology.

They found that without the economic incentive of a carbon tax, manufacturers are unlikely to create new technology that doesn't rely on fossil fuels, and nations are unlikely to "go green."

Another benefit postulated in the report is the tax balancing the needs of developing economies against the need to reduce fossil fuel emissions around the globe and limit the impact of human activity on the environment.

The study was released ahead of the Conference of the Parties 22 to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held from Nov. 7-18 in Marrakesh, Morocco.

This week, NASA released the first maps ever of human-made carbon dioxide emissions from satellite data. Data was collected from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite, which provided information on carbon dioxide released from fossil fuels and other human activity.

No prior satellite was capable of measuring carbon dioxide with enough clarity to create maps of human emissions. As a result, earlier maps had to include estimates based on data from other sources. 

Three carbon dioxide emission maps were created by a team of scientists from the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, led by Dr. Janne Hakkarainen. The maps focused on the highest carbon dioxide emitting areas: East Asia, Central Europe, and the eastern United States. 

Hakkarainen noted, “OCO-2 can even detect smaller, isolated emitting areas like individual cities. It’s a power tool that gives new insight.”

Because greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for at least 100 years, the trick was to separate the recent emissions from the total emissions. To test their data, the team compared their findings with measurements of nitrogen dioxide from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA’s Aura satellite. The two satellites are in the same satellite constellation and their measurements are therefore correlated. 

Dr. Johanna Tamminen, head of the Atmospheric Remote Sensing Group at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, added, “The research demonstrates the possibility of analyzing joint satellite observations of carbon dioxide and other gases related to combustion processes to draw out information about the emissions sources.”

Social networking helps scientists: researchers turn to Instagram and Flickr to boost their landscape data banks.

When you go hiking in the mountains, travel overseas, or visit a pristine beach, your photos may be more than just a memory of a great time. According to one expert, they're becoming valuable research data.

Researchers are turning to Instagram, Flickr, and other social media sites to identify which destinations tourists feel are most important, according to Dr. Jordan Smith, director of the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University. Smith is also an assistant professor the university's Department of Environment and Society.

Dr. Smith – along with Boris van Zanten, Koen Tieskens and Peter Verburg of Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, as well as Derek van Berkel and Ross Meentenmeyer of North Carolina State University – took to the social media websites to identify and map the locations shown in the photos that were being shared.

This helped them find what they have dubbed "hot spots" – outdoor spaces that tourists most want to visit. That data can be used to help prioritize landscape management and determine funding, Smith stated.

The team's findings were published in the early edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences online on Oct. 31, 2016.

Pygmy moth species detailed in new report.

Today a team of scientists published three interlinked scientific articles together with two online databases, providing a catalogue with the names of all the species of pygmy moth.

Today there are more than 1050 known species of pygmy moths. The leaf-mining pygmy moth and the white eyecap moth are known for the patterns their caterpillars leave behind, known as leaf mines. Following DNA analysis on the evolutionary relationships of more than 1000 pygmy moth species, a new classification has been created.

A team of scientists led by Dr. Erik J. van Nieukerken and Dr. Camiel Doorenweerd of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in The Netherlands published three reports in the journal Systematic Entomology that includes a catalogue of all pygmy moth species.

Their study found the presence of leaf mines in fossil leaves, indicating that pygmy moths started to diversify over 100 million years ago. Three new genera were discovered in South and Central America.

In order to change a classification, many species names must also be modified. As such, the team published a full catalogue of all the species names along with the various synonymic names that have been used in the past 150 years.

252 million years ago, Planet Earth had a very bad day. The most disastrous mass extinction in the history of the planet occurred, wiping out most living things. 

Recently a team of palaeontologists discovered fossils in Greenland that shed light on how recovery began at the two poles immediately following the catastrophic event, when even life far away from the equator was completely destroyed.

The ocean floor became very acidic and lacked oxygen, making it completely unlivable for most organisms. But newly discovered fossils have shown that bivalves and colonies of filter-feeding microconchid tube worms began to develop along the ocean floor. These are the first ancient microconchid fossils that have been discovered so far from the equator. 

“Our discovery is significant because it shows for the first time that sea floor life at higher latitudes suffered the same global extinction process,” says researcher Benjamin Kear. Kear and his team are part of a larger project intending to add to knowledge about the beginnings of aquatic animals. 

There is still much mystery surrounding why vertebrate animals left the sea for land 360 million years ago, and then returned to the sea 108 million years later – sudden mass environmental changes like an extinction event can trigger a dramatic shift in the trajectory of a species.

Colorado River drought needs desperate attention before extreme water shortages occur.

Once the 2016 Presidential election is finally over, major U.S. environmental issues around the Colorado River needs desperate attention. The river supplies water to millions in cities, farms, and Native American tribes in the Southwest, but a drought lasting more than 16 years continues to diminish the water supply on which so many citizens and businesses rely. 

According to a University of Colorado survey, the next U.S. president will almost certainly be faced with Colorado River supply cuts in Arizona and Nevada as soon as January 2018. As former assistant U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary for Water and Science Anne Castle said, “This is a nonpartisan issue. There’s a confluence of urgent issues that need to be dealt with.”

A Colorado River Future Project survey found that more river water is needed by interests in Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, California, Colorado, Mexico and Utah than will be available. The organization is urging political leaders to address water supply contingency plans and extend water-use agreements immediately.

In December of next year, a pact between the U.S. and Mexico that allows Mexico to “store” water at Lake Mead will expire. Lake Mead is an incredibly significant Colorado River reservoir, and the added water helps balance the surface water level. Lake Mead is currently at 37% capacity, barely over the level that would trigger an 11% supply shortage to Arizona and 4% to Nevada.

Meanwhile, the Salton Sea in Southern California continues to shrink, and officials in San Diego and surrounding water agencies will have to decide if they will continue to replenish it.

Climate and environmental issues have largely taken a backseat to personal attacks and scandals this election. But whoever wins on November 8th won’t be able to avoid the growing Colorado River drought and its fallout in surrounding areas of the Southwest.

As we reported earlier today, climate change is causing extreme reactions in the Arctic, where temperatures are rising twice as fast as in the rest of the world. Ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising, but there is at least one silver lining: the Arctic climate change opens up potential for commerce in the area, specifically agriculture. 

In October, experts at a conference in Iceland discussed the potential for a growing Arctic agricultural economy. Over the next few decades, climate conditions are predicted to evolve so much that the land may be able to sustain vegetable and grain crops, as well as raising livestock. As Torfi Johannesson, president of the Circumpolar Agricultural Association, put it: “Agriculture will be possible in many places where it is not now.”

Warmer temperatures have ushered in a longer growing season that will only continue to extend. Milan Sipka, director of the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, added, “The ability to work the ground occurred at least two weeks earlier [in the season] than what anyone would have expected.”

Today, Alaska is home to 750 farms covering 830,000 acres of farmland that added $48 million to the economy in 2014. As the ground becomes more fertile and plant-friendly, it will not only allow for crop growth, but also increased grassy space to provide nourishment for animals. “There is all kinds of evidence that climate change is presenting positive impacts on agriculture in south Greenland, in terms of yield and variety,” said Joan Nymand Larsen, research director at the Stefansson Arctic Institute in Iceland.

But the effects are not all positive. The region will also fall foul to pests and diseases that didn’t previously exist there. Rainfall will also vary – some potential farming areas may experience drought, while others flood.

The growing agricultural industry in Greenland could also run into conflict with the mining industry. Mining plays a huge part in Greenland’s economy, but radioactive dust from mining could contaminate nearby farming soil.

Only time will tell how the growth of Arctic agriculture will play out. For now, the possibility of such an industry brings a small bit of good news to an otherwise distressing climate trend.

Mexican avocado deforestation: world authorities voice concerns as forests are lost to make way for orchards. 

In Mexico, deforestation rates are much higher than anyone previously thought. Michoacan, the world's largest producer of avocados, obliterates a shocking 20,000 hectares of forest each year for agriculture, nearly 40% of which consists of avocado orchards. Not only are they destroying forest habitats, the thirsty avocado plants require twice as much water as the decimated vegetation. Species like the famous monarch butterfly are in danger if deforestation increases at this rate.

Due to the thirsty fruit, less water is going to the Michoacan's crystalline mountain streams, which means the animal and plant populations of the forest are going without.

As avocados rise in popularity so do the demands on production. Growers have been encouraged to expand orchards and increase their revenues, increasing the toll taken on the ecosystem. Warnings are coming today before irreparable damage is caused to the area.

All in all, Michoacan already hosts around 150,000 hectares of orchards and has granted no new deforestation permits in the past few years. This impoverished state relies on revenue and jobs created from avocado production – the authorities are keen to encourage people to work within this legal field rather than in the growing synthetic drug production industry.

Talia Coria, an official in the attorney general's office for environmental protection, commented, "That is why we are sitting down now with all the parties involved to find a way to continue this industry of avocado growing, which provides a lot of jobs and income for the state, in harmony with the conservation of our natural resources. We are going to search for a way . . . to ensure that all avocados exported are legal, and that the environment has not been affected by their production. The avocado growers appear to be convinced that we have to find options for conserving the environment."

However, this district has no definite plan to develop any official sustainable avocado schemes to reduce Mexican avocado deforestation, despite Ms. Coria admitting it is difficult to differentiate the legal avocados from avocados grown on illegal sites, adding that other agricultural activities have also contributed to the deforestation.

Arctic Ocean naval operations may change as ice melts. Commerce, tourism and exploration could pose a new security threat.

In the Arctic Ocean our accessible waters are expanding as sea ice diminishes. Due to the changing environment, scientists have been studying the region to understand these changes and support the U.S. Navy’s actions in a region which was once unreachable. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) commissioned research on this topic, which was published today.

"This changing environment is opening the Arctic for expanded maritime and naval activity. Developing a deeper understanding and knowledge of this environment is essential for reliable weather and ice predictions to ensure the safety of future scientific and operational activities in the region," said Rear Admiral Mat Winter, chief of naval research.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center recently revealed that 2016's sea ice minimum tied with 2007 for the second-lowest ice minimum since the 1970s. The lowest minimum ever was recorded in 2012.

In order to understand the region, scientists measured the strength and intensity of waves and swells moving through the sea ice. This growing database will help develop models and prediction forecasts for ice, ocean and weather conditions.

The research team uses sophisticated equipment to gauge temperature, salinity, ice and ambient noise conditions under the ice surface.

"Abundant sea ice reduces waves and swells and keeps the Arctic Ocean very quiet," said Dr. Robert Headrick, an ONR program officer overseeing the research. "With increased sea ice melt, however, come more waves and wind, which create more noise and make it harder to track undersea vessels. The goal of [this research] is to gain a better and more comprehensive understanding of these changing oceanographic conditions."

Arctic Ocean naval operations have been reduced to submarine operations based on the thick coverage of sea ice, but as this ice melts, opportunities are opened up for commerce, tourism and exploration, in turn raising new security concerns. This process could create new navel requirements in the area.

"Having accurate forecasting models will help the Navy determine what types of surface vessels it will need to build in the near future and 30 years from now, to withstand the climate conditions," said Dr. Scott Harper, another ONR program officer. "That way, the Navy can operate as safely and effectively in the Arctic as it does throughout the rest of the world."

A new microsatellite resource helps in keeping plant research costs down.

Too often, scientific breakthroughs are held back due to lack of funding. Genetic research, in particular, can quickly become costly when dealing with specific genome analysis. 

A team of scientists from the University of Florida led by Richard Hodel set out to make genetic research easier and more affordable. Through two pieces published in Applications in Plant Sciences, they have laid out guidelines for using microsatellites for research projects on a wide variety of plant species. In addition, they offer a resource of over five million microsatellites.

Microsatellites are genetic markers that are unique in their ability to be used for many different kinds of genetic research. They can be tested for the presence of a particular gene, used to discover the relationship between individual cases versus the full population, as well as to track and create genome maps.

Hodel remarks, “Often, an initial barrier to starting a project is securing funding to develop genetic markers, if none are available for the study system of interest. Our microsatellite resource will allow researchers to search for loci that are available for a wide range of species, for free.”

Microsatellites were originally identified from sequence data found in the online database of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Project (1KP). Genetic data from the 1KP database can be utilized for marker development and is what allowed the team to compile the 5 million new microsatellite resource for further research.

The resource is essentially a gift to the genetic research community and opens the door for lower-budget research projects to thrive. Hodel adds, “The goal was to give people practical guidance and to enable them to consider all of their options.”

Golfers beware – a new golf course fungal disease is attacking southern U.S. courses.

Drought conditions, uninvited wildlife, and fungal growth are all common problems for golf courses from time to time. Recently, however, a strange new phenomenon has been popping up on golf courses in the southeastern United States, where patches of turf turned black and resembled a large ink spill. Not only has the golf course fungal disease ruined the famously pristine aesthetic of these courses, but it has also made some golfers fearful of playing.

Scientists from Mississippi State University have finally identified the culprit. Curvularia malina is a new fungus species previously unknown to experts. The name “malina” stems from the Sanskrit word meaning “dirty or stained,” due to its dark, blotchy appearance. The finding was published by Dr. Young-Ki Jo and his partner Dr. Maria Tomaso-Peterson in the Mycologia journal.

Because the pathogen is newly discovered, golf course managers have been sweating over how to address the issue. “If we don’t know the biology of a fungus, there is no management protocol,” said Dr. Jo. Fungicides can be incredibly expensive, costing over $5,000 per treatment, and may not even be effective against the new strain.

Not surprisingly, it is during the more humid months when the fungus flourishes. Luckily, it doesn’t actually kill grass, and the condition often clears up once drier conditions return.

Southern Spain climate change fears are at the forefront in a new report suggesting the Mediterranean could turn to dust as soon as the year 2100.

Using historical data and computer models, experts predict a dramatic change for Southern Spain in the face of global warming.

The researchers say any warming above 2°C will cause these drastic results. Even more dramatically, they did not factor in any additional impact caused by human activity.

Scientists warn that Southern Spain climate will cause deserts to form, and forests will vanish by 2100 unless urgent changes are made. Such drastic climate changes have not been seen in the past 10,000 years.

Co-leader of the study Dr. Joel Guiot, researcher at the National Centre of Scientific Research in France, said: “The Paris Agreement says it's necessary to limit global warming to 2°C (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), if possible 1.5°. That doesn't seem much to people, but we wanted to see what the difference would be on a sensitive region like the Mediterranean.”

The researchers used pollen records to gauge the effect temperatures had on plants, creating four scenarios based on various concentrations of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. 

The richly biodiverse region has been long cultivated by humans. “Climate has always been important there,” said Mr. Guiot. The ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and the Romans all emerged from the Mediterranean. He noted that their demise would have been influenced by socio-political factors but climate may have played a large role.

Dr. Guiot warned that climate change could spark mass migrations of people.

The Mediterranean basin is already experiencing severe water shortages, exacerbated by intensive agriculture and tree clearing.

“If anything, human action will exacerbate what the study projects, and it could turn out to be too optimistic,” Dr. Guiot said.

The Paris Climate Agreement comes into effect this week.

Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles.

Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.

“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.

According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> describes how Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to sustain liquid water on its surface. But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
