Balancing cleaner air with rising incomes is not a luxury question for developing countries. It is a real-world, and real-life, policy problem that shapes health, jobs, and the future of their cities.



A new <a href="https://www.worldscientific.com/doi/10.1142/S0217590825500304" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> lays out when zero emissions can go hand in hand with steady <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-temperatures-will-cut-world-gdp-by-a-staggering-40-percent-if-nothing-changes/">growth</a>, even when governments rely on foreign aid.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zero-emissions-and-economic-growth">Zero emissions and economic growth</h2>



The work comes from <a href="https://tus.elsevierpure.com/en/persons/hideo-noda" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hideo Noda</a> at the Tokyo University of Science (<a href="https://www.tus.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TUS</a>) with coauthor Fengqi Fang, a Ph.D. candidate in Business Administration from the Graduate School of Business Administration at TUS. 



The team builds a simple but testable way to check if a country can hit zero net <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-trade-is-fueling-a-dangerous-rise-in-methane-emissions/">emissions</a> while its economy keeps expanding.



They also verify the model numerically using real world style parameters so it is not just a chalkboard exercise. 



The paper connects theory to a specific United Nations target on decoupling growth from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/limiting-global-warming-to-1-5c-is-almost-certainly-out-of-reach/">environmental damage</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-zero-emissions-models">Zero emissions models</h2>



First, the authors define a zero-emissions <a href="https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/net-zero-coalition" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">policy</a> as keeping net pollution at zero at every point in time, by matching abatement to emissions. That requires money, technology, and clear rules to assign who pays.



They run two versions of the economy. 



One is a public goods <a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/stantcheva/files/lecture8.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a> where government services like roads or schools lift private production for everyone at once, a standard growth <a href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/261726" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">model</a> introduced by Robert Barro in 1990. 



The second adds <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/where-will-climate-change-hit-hardest-global-index-reveals-vulnerability/">congestion</a>, where more people share the same public services so the boost per person shrinks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-minimum-income-rule">Minimum income rule</h2>



The key test is whether gross domestic product (<a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GDP</a>) per capita rises above a minimum income threshold so a country can fully clean what it emits. 



The authors call this the kindergarten rule level of abatement, as in: “clean-up what you make dirty.”



"Following the Kindergarten rule means implementing zero emission technologies in either finite time or asymptotically," noted M. Scott Taylor and William Brock in their related <a href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w9597" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a>. 



This frame anchors the new threshold concept for developing countries.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aid-supports-clean-income-growth">Aid supports clean income growth</h2>



Many low income governments fund services with official development assistance (<a href="https://www.oecd.org/en/topics/policy-issues/official-development-assistance-oda.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ODA</a>), so the model lets outside aid pay for both cleaning and public services. 



That design reflects classic work showing how aid aimed at productive public services can shift long run growth.



In related <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0304387806000290" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">theory</a>, flexible labor and aid tied to public capital influence the path of output and welfare. The new paper extends this logic to pollution control that must be paid for every year.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-income-threshold">Changing income threshold</h2>



The threshold depends on clean technology, population size, and how much aid is fixed to environmental <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/expanding-oil-and-gas-fields-threaten-global-climate-goals/">uses</a>. Better abatement technology lowers the income bar because each dollar of cleanup removes more pollution.



Population matters differently across the two models. In the public goods case, a larger labor force can raise growth because services scale with the economy, while in the congestion case that scale effect drops out as services get diluted.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-taxes-and-zero-emissions-targets">Taxes and zero emissions targets</h2>



The model also looks at tax policy, focusing on a labor income tax that finances services. 



There is a tax rate that maximizes the growth of income per person, and under both models governments can reach the needed income threshold in finite time if they choose that growth maximizing rate.



Public services that complement private capital are the link. When governments tax and spend on those services efficiently, private firms produce more and the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-action-economies-can-grow-while-cutting-emissions/">economy climbs</a> to the income level that makes full abatement feasible.



"Both models indicate that implementing the zero-emissions policy is compatible with sustainable economic growth," wrote Noda. 



They also show the kindergarten rule threshold is higher with congestion than without it, so crowding of public services slows the crossing.



"We call this threshold the kindergarten rule level of pollution abatement in terms of GDP per capita," wrote Noda. The result gives policymakers a clear income target, not just a slogan about decoupling.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-income-growth-and-sdgs">Income growth and SDGs</h2>



Target 8.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href="https://www.undp.org/sustainable-development-goals" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SDGs</a>) asks countries to decouple growth from environmental degradation. 



The authors argue their framework helps explain when that is possible in practice, and how policy levers change the timing.



The UN defines the <a href="https://metadata.un.org/sdg/8.4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">target</a> as improving resource efficiency and decoupling growth from environmental harm through 2030. The paper’s threshold view fits that mandate with a concrete yardstick.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-results-still-matter">Why results still matter</h2>



Earlier <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0959652621009112" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">work</a> in the same research stream focused on developed, innovation-driven economies and showed that zero emissions could be achieved alongside continued growth. 



That study examined whether sustained economic expansion could occur while also maintaining <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/a-net-zero-world-will-require-75-trillion-of-investment-and-1-billion-electric-cars/">zero net pollution emissions</a>.



The new paper shows the same compatibility can hold in aid dependent settings where innovation is not the main growth engine. 



That extension fills a real gap, because many low income countries face tighter fiscal and technological limits.



Build or buy cleaner technology so the threshold falls. Treat tied aid for environmental programs as a growth tool and not just a cost center.



Set tax policy to raise the growth rate of income per person, then sustain it long enough to pass the threshold. Guard against congestion by scaling services with population, so gains are not diluted.

In our vast oceans and water bodies, an intricate ecological dance unfolds beneath the surface, guided in part by light-detecting molecules called phytochromes. 



These remarkable sensors are found in the bodies of tiny phytoplankton, and enable them to adapt and thrive in dynamic aquatic environments.



Phytoplankton are the backbone of marine food chains. They play a critical role in regulating our planet's climate by absorbing atmospheric CO2 and producing half of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis.



Despite their immense importance, the mechanisms behind the distribution and behavior of phytoplankton remain a scientific mystery that sparks ongoing curiosity and research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-diatoms-with-built-in-light-detection">Diatoms with built-in light detection </h2>



In a joint effort, scientists from <a href="https://www.cnrs.fr/fr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CNRS</a> and <a href="https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorbonne University</a> set out to investigate the movements of these microscopic organisms in the water column. The focus was primarily on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-plankton-play-a-big-role-in-the-global-carbon-cycle/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diatoms</a>, a major group of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-heatwaves-have-complex-effects-on-phytoplankton-food-web/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">phytoplankton</a>.



Through rigorous research, the experts discovered that diatoms have a built-in light detection system, comprising sensors that are encoded directly into their genomes. 



The light-sensitive pigments, known as phytochromes, are essentially microscopic "eyes" that allow diatoms to perceive changes in the light spectrum present at different depths of water. This provides the diatoms with data about their vertical position in the water column.



Knowing whether you are shallow or deep in the water becomes incredibly useful, especially in turbulent water bodies like the high latitude, temperate, and polar regions that witness intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/atlantic-and-arctic-mixing-is-crucial-for-earths-climate-stability/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water mixing</a>.



By interpreting the information relayed by phytochromes, diatoms adjust their photosynthetic activity, and thus, survive and thrive.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tiny-timekeepers-of-the-aquatic-world">Tiny timekeepers of the aquatic world</h2>



The researchers took their study a step further by scrutinizing environmental genomic data gathered from marine sampling expeditions. They observed an intriguing pattern: phytochromes were solely present in diatoms from zones outside the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.



These regions are marked by notable differences in day length, highlighting a strong sense of seasonality.



The presence of phytochromes in diatoms from these latitudes suggests that the light sensors may also double as biological clocks, helping diatoms measure the passage of time translating into seasons.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-critical-insights-into-phytoplankton-behavior">Critical insights into phytoplankton behavior</h2>



The research, published in the journal Nature, provides a fresh perspective on how phytoplankton, specifically diatoms, perceive and react to light in order to navigate their surroundings.



Probing into the secrets of phytoplankton behavior and their adaptive mechanisms doesn't just feed scientific curiosity - it holds the potential to profoundly enhance our understanding of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine ecosystems</a> and the complex dynamics that govern them.



As our environments continue to change, such insights could prove invaluable in preserving the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-phytochromes-beyond-light-detection">Phytochromes: Beyond light detection</h2>



While the role of phytochromes in light detection is remarkable, their functionality may extend beyond navigation and adaptation to light conditions. 



Emerging research suggests that these molecular sensors could influence the efficiency of photosynthesis in diatoms. 



By detecting subtle changes in the light spectrum around diatoms, phytochromes may help optimize the energy conversion process, allowing diatoms to make the most of varying light availability in their environment.



This adaptive advantage is particularly significant in turbulent waters, where light intensity and quality shift rapidly. 



Diatoms equipped with phytochromes are better positioned to compete for resources, which ensures their survival and their ability to sequester carbon and produce oxygen. 



Understanding how phytochromes contribute to these processes could unlock innovative approaches to mitigating climate change. For example, experts could potentially harness phytoplankton's natural abilities to absorb atmospheric CO2.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-global-importance-of-phytoplankton">The global importance of phytoplankton</h2>



Phytoplankton may be microscopic, but their impact extends across the entire planet. These tiny organisms form the foundation of the marine food webs that support everything from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-are-rapidly-escalating-the-threat-of-nanoplastics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a> to the largest whales.



Beyond their ecological role, they are also crucial to Earth's climate system. By absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, phytoplankton act as a natural buffer against global warming, and help to regulate atmospheric CO2 levels.



However, this delicate balance is increasingly under threat. Climate change, pollution, and ocean acidification are altering marine environments, and disrupting phytoplankton populations along with the ecosystems they support.



Research into the adaptive mechanisms of phytoplankton highlights the urgency of preserving the health of our oceans. Protecting phytoplankton is not just about saving marine life - it’s about safeguarding the stability of our planet's climate and resources for future generations.

Tiny microplastic particles that shed from everyday products like clothing, packaging, and other plastics are ending up in the fish people eat, according to new research conducted by Portland State University (PSU). 



The study highlights the need for strategies and technologies to curb microfiber pollution entering the environment and, ultimately, the human food chain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seafood-contaminated-with-microplastics-nbsp">Seafood contaminated with microplastics&nbsp;</h2>



Previously, <a href="https://www.pdx.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Portland State University</a>’s Applied Coastal Ecology Lab - led by Elise Granek, professor of environmental science and management - investigated <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microplastics-are-steadily-increasing-in-freshwater-environments/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microplastics</a> in bivalves like Pacific oysters and razor clams.&nbsp;



Building on these findings, the researchers turned their attention to commonly consumed finfish and crustaceans.



Summer Traylor, who finished her master’s in environmental management in 2022, led the project with support from undergraduate environmental science major Marilyn Duncan, a 2024 graduate.&nbsp;



They aimed to explore microplastic contamination in Oregon finfish and shellfish, examine differences across trophic levels, and understand how contamination might vary between fish acquired directly from research fishing vessels versus those from supermarkets and seafood vendors.&nbsp;



Traylor’s work later helped her secure a position with the <a href="https://www.noaa.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration</a> (NOAA), while Duncan plans to pursue microplastics research in graduate school.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-identifying-microplastics-in-seafood-species">Identifying microplastics in seafood species</h2>



The research team focused on six species of economic or cultural importance in Oregon: black rockfish, lingcod, Chinook salmon, Pacific herring, Pacific lamprey, and pink <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shrimp-crisis-alarming-virus-threatens-global-seafood-supplies/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shrimp</a>. They evaluated the amount of anthropogenic particles - materials produced or modified by humans - found in the edible tissues of these species.



In collaboration with Susanne Brander, an ecotoxicologist and associate professor in Oregon State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, the researchers confirmed a subset of suspected microplastics.&nbsp;



The study, published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.3389/ftox.2024.1469995" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Frontiers in Toxicology</a>, reported 1,806 suspected particles across 180 of 182 individual samples. Fibers dominated the findings, followed by fragments and films.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-smaller-species-have-higher-contamination-levels">Smaller species have higher contamination levels</h2>



Among the species tested, pink shrimp, which filter-feed close to the water’s surface, displayed the highest concentrations of particles in their edible tissues. Chinook salmon registered the lowest, with black rockfish and lingcod falling somewhere in the middle.



“We found that the smaller organisms that we sampled seem to be ingesting more anthropogenic, non-nutritious particles,” Granek said.&nbsp;



“Shrimp and small fish, like herring, are eating smaller food items like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/zooplankton-poop-can-be-used-to-store-carbon-in-the-deep-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">zooplankton</a>. Other studies have found high concentrations of plastics in the area in which zooplankton accumulate and these anthropogenic particles may resemble zooplankton and thus be taken up for animals that feed on zooplankton.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastic-contamination-in-processed-fish">Microplastic contamination in processed fish</h2>



Although the researchers initially believed that handling and packaging fish might introduce additional microplastics, their findings varied among the species.&nbsp;



The experts rinsed off fillets and shrimp to simulate typical home preparation, suggesting that in certain cases, external contaminants on the surface may be washed away before cooking.&nbsp;



Even so, the study provides clear evidence of widespread microplastic contamination within the tissues of Oregon’s marine and freshwater species.



“It’s very concerning that microfibers appear to move from the gut into other tissues such as muscle,” Brander said. “This has wide implications for other organisms, potentially including humans too.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-microplastics-are-widespread-in-the-environment-nbsp">Microplastics are widespread in the environment&nbsp;</h2>



The results signal the need for further research on how these particles move into muscle tissue, which humans consume, and on policy actions to regulate anthropogenic particles.&nbsp;



“This project established critical baseline data for West Coast fisheries stakeholders and highlighted how much we still do not know about these pervasive microplastic pollutants,” Traylor noted. Now a NOAA Corps Officer, she is continuing to gather baseline microplastic data in the Gulf of Mexico.



Granek cautions against avoiding seafood altogether, reminding people that microplastics permeate many parts of our environment.&nbsp;



“If we are disposing of and utilizing products that release microplastics, those microplastics make their way into the environment, and are taken up by things we eat,” she said. “What we put out into the environment ends up back on our plates.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finding-solutions-for-safer-seafood">Finding solutions for safer seafood</h2>



In response to these findings, Granek’s lab is increasingly working toward finding viable solutions.&nbsp;



“We’re continuing to do work to understand the effects of anthropogenic particles on animals, but we’re also moving into experimental work to test what are effective solutions to reduce microplastics entering <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/overfishing-and-habitat-degradation-have-devastated-marine-ecosystems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">marine ecosystems</a>,” she explained.



Granek leads a $1.9 million NOAA-funded project exploring cost-effective filtration solutions for washing machines, dishwashers, and clothes dryers.&nbsp;



Another project, supported by Oregon Sea Grant, will install six catch basin filters in stormwater drains in two coastal towns. These filters aim to reduce road runoff before it flows into waterways. Brander’s lab collaborates on both projects, further illustrating the collective effort to confront microplastic pollution.



As evidenced by this study, microplastics in marine species have broader environmental and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-marine-protected-areas-boost-human-health/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human health</a> implications.&nbsp;



By continuing to research contamination levels, understanding the biological pathways of microplastics, and developing practical solutions, scientists hope to protect marine ecosystems and ensure that the seafood reaching dinner tables is safer for everyone.

Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a rapidly growing problem. Each year, the world generates approximately 50 million tons of this type of waste.



It's alarming to note that only 20% of e-waste is recycled, while the rest finds its way to landfills or incineration - both of which contribute to environmental pollution.



However, scientists have found a shining opportunity amid this grim reality, proving that every cloud truly has a silver (or gold) lining.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-e-waste-the-basics">Understanding e-waste -- the basics</h2>



As technology advances quickly, people upgrade their gadgets, leaving behind old devices that often end up in landfills. 



Unfortunately, e-waste can be <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/electronic-waste-is-growing-five-times-faster-than-recycling/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">harmful to the environment</a> because many electronic items contain hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. 



These toxic substances can leach into the soil and water, polluting ecosystems and posing health risks to both humans and wildlife.



Many parts of electronic devices, like metals, plastics, and glass, can be reused in the manufacturing of new products. Proper recycling of e-waste not only helps reduce <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/international-day-of-zero-waste-a-global-commitment-to-a-sustainable-future/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental pollution</a> but also conserves valuable resources.



However, recycling e-waste requires specialized processes to safely extract these materials, and not all recycling centers are equipped to handle it.



Scientists are hoping that this new discovery will make the recycling process much more profitable for centers, encouraging more of them to help the world tackle this e-waste problem.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transforming-e-waste-into-gold">Transforming e-waste into gold</h2>



The idea of extracting <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/supergiant-gold-deposit-find-claims-to-be-the-worlds-largest-discovery-ever/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gold</a> from electronic waste is not new. It is estimated that a ton of electronic waste contains at least 10 times more gold than a ton of regular ore from which gold is mined.



But the devil is in the detail, or in this case, in the gold extraction process. Traditional techniques involve using harsh toxins like <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cyanide-may-have-contributed-to-the-emergence-of-life/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cyanide</a>, which pose major environmental risks.



Yet, scientists at the <a href="https://cals.cornell.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell</a> have devised an ingenious solution that is eco-friendly and doubly beneficial.



The new method does not just extract gold from e-waste, it also uses the precious metal to convert carbon dioxide (CO2), a key greenhouse gas, into useful chemicals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extracting-gold-with-precision">Extracting gold with precision </h2>



The research, led by postdoc researcher Amin Zadehnazari, is rooted in the creation of vinyl-linked covalent organic frameworks (VCOFs).



These VCOFs are designed to pick out gold ions and nanoparticles from the intricate circuit boards found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hidden-e-waste-millions-of-tons-discarded-in-the-us-each-year/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discarded electronic devices</a>, and they do so with remarkable precision and efficiency.



One of the VCOFs was found to capture a whopping 99.9% of the gold, leaving behind other metals like nickel and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/copper-industry-of-king-solomons-era-didnt-harm-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">copper</a>.



“We can then use the gold-loaded COFs to convert CO2 into useful chemicals,” noted Zadehnazari. “By transforming &nbsp;CO2 into value-added materials, we not only reduce waste disposal demands, we also provide both environmental and practical benefits. It’s kind of a win-win for the environment.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-a-greener-future">Building a greener future</h2>



The unique properties of the VCOFs lie in their building blocks - tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and tetraphenylethylene (TPE). 



Tetrathiafulvalene is rich in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sulfur-may-have-played-key-role-origin-of-life-on-earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sulfur</a>, which makes it a natural magnet for gold. TTF also demonstrated an amazing endurance, withstanding 16 washings and reuses without showing significant loss of adsorption efficiency.



Another fascinating aspect of this method is its ability to convert CO2 into organic matter under ambient CO2 pressure at 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), a result of carboxylation.



This process doubles the benefit of the technique, as it is not just extracting precious metal but also reducing the levels of a potent greenhouse gas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-selectively-capturing-gold-from-e-waste">Selectively capturing gold from e-waste </h2>



Study co-author Alireza Abbaspourrad, a professor of food chemistry and ingredient technology, emphasized the importance of this selective recovery.



“Knowing how much gold and other precious metals go into these types of electronics devices, being able to recover them in a way where you can selectively capture the metal you want - in this case, gold - is very important,” said Abbaspourrad.



As we face a future burdened with 80 million metric tons of e-waste by 2030, it has become more crucial than ever to find sustainable ways of dealing with this issue.



The method developed by the Cornell team provides us with a glimmer of hope - a vision of a future where waste becomes wealth, and where our technological habits serve nature rather than harm it.

A recent study from Washington State University (WSU) reveals that climate change poses significant challenges to apple orchards in some of the most productive regions of the United States.



The researchers conducted an extensive study that included over four decades of climate data. They analyzed how varying weather conditions influence the critical growth stages of apple trees.



These stages include bud break, flowering, fruit development, maturation, and color development - all of which are crucial for healthy yields and high-quality apples.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-change-and-apple-growth">Climate change and apple growth</h2>



The study revealed alarming trends, particularly for the three most productive apple-growing counties in the United States:&nbsp;Yakima County in Washington,&nbsp;Kent County in Michigan, and&nbsp;Wayne County in New York. 



Among these,&nbsp;Yakima County - a powerhouse with over 48,800 acres of apple orchards - was found to be the most severely affected.



Yakima County exhibited harmful trends in five out of the six <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-added-41-extra-days-of-dangerous-heat-in-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate</a> metrics studied, indicating the region's heightened vulnerability. These metrics include factors like extreme heat, warm nights, reduced cold periods, and shifting frost dates, all of which disrupt the delicate balance needed for apple growth. 



The findings highlight the region’s significant exposure to the negative impacts of climate change, which could challenge its status as a leading apple producer in the future.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-metrics-and-apple-production">Climate metrics and apple production</h2>



Apple production relies on specific <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/2024-confirmed-as-earths-hottest-year-in-recorded-history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">climate conditions</a> to ensure healthy growth, high yields, and good fruit quality. However, shifts in these conditions pose significant challenges:



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-extreme-heat-days">Extreme heat days</h3>



When temperatures exceed 93°F, apple trees face stress that can lead to sunburn on the fruit, reducing apple quality and marketability. Prolonged exposure to such heat can also impair tree health and productivity.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-warm-nights">Warm nights</h3>



Nighttime temperatures above&nbsp;59°F&nbsp;interfere with apple coloration. Proper color development is essential for market appeal, as it affects both the visual and perceived quality of the fruit.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cold-days-and-chill-portions">Cold days and chill portions</h3>



Apple trees need a specific number of cold hours (known as&nbsp;chill portions) during dormancy to reset their growth cycle. A reduction in these cold periods can lead to irregular flowering and lower yields.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spring-frost-timing">Spring frost timing</h3>



Changes in the timing of the last spring frost disrupt the blooming process. Late frosts can damage blossoms, leading to fewer fruit or misshapen apples.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-growing-degree-days">Growing degree days</h3>



Warmer overall temperatures accelerate the growth process, potentially causing premature fruit development. This can affect the size, flavor, and storability of apples.



These changing climate conditions <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-struggling-to-breathe-store-co2-hotter-climate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">upset the delicate balance</a> required for consistent and high-quality apple production. The western U.S., a major apple-producing region, has experienced the most pronounced negative trends in these metrics. 



This raises concerns not just for regional growers but for the entire U.S. apple industry, as these changes threaten both the quantity and quality of the fruit.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-compounding-threats-of-climate-change">Compounding threats of climate change </h2>



“We shouldn’t take the delicious apples we love to consume for granted,” said Deepti Singh, <a href="https://wsu.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WSU</a> climate scientist and the study’s corresponding author. 



“Changing climate conditions over multiple parts of the growth cycle pose potentially compounding threats to the production and quality of apples.”



This complexity stems from the perennial nature of apple trees. “What goes on in different seasons can affect long-term health as well as the performance and productivity of the apple tree during that specific season,” explained Lee Kalcsits, a WSU tree physiologist.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-apples-from-climate-change">Protecting apples from climate change</h2>



Apple growers in Washington state are implementing adaptive measures to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/should-we-cut-down-all-oak-trees-isoprene-emissions-air-pollution-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">combat the effects of extreme heat </a>on their crops. 



Techniques like netting, which reduces direct sunlight to prevent sunburn, and evaporative cooling, which uses water misting systems to lower orchard temperatures, are helping protect fruit quality and tree health. 



These adaptations highlight both the resilience of the apple industry and the urgency of addressing climate change challenges. To support growers further, WSU researchers are working on large-scale solutions. 



Led by Lee Kalcsits, a $6.75 million USDA-funded project aims to mitigate the impact of extreme climate events on apple and pear crops. 



This collaborative, multi-institution effort seeks to develop strategies that growers across the nation can use to sustain production in an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-have-an-amazing-ability-to-adapt-to-new-climates/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">increasingly volatile climate</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-blueprint-for-the-future">A blueprint for the future</h2>



“Washington is a great place to start to talk about adaptation,” said Kirti Rajagopalan, a WSU biological systems engineer and study co-author. 



If successful, the strategies tested here could serve as a blueprint for apple-growing regions nationwide.



As climate change risks grow, the apple industry’s ability to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trees-are-relocating-in-a-race-against-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">adapt</a> will be crucial. With ongoing research and innovative solutions, there’s hope that the apples we cherish can continue to thrive in a changing world.

The idea of life continuing on Earth without humans has a way of catching our attention. Our species has spread across land and sea, altering the planet in countless ways.



Still, Earth’s history shows that no species lasts forever. It can be sobering to consider a future without us, but it also sparks plenty of curiosity about what might follow in our absence.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-discovery-anadoluvius-turkae-suggests-humans-originated-in-europe-not-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Human beings</a> have been at the center of ecological change on Earth for thousands of years. Our inventions and communities have reshaped forests, oceans, and even the atmosphere. 



Yet many researchers say nature will adapt once we are gone. This leads to questions about who - or what - would occupy our spot.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-after-humans">Earth after humans</h2>



<a href="https://www.biology.ox.ac.uk/people/tim-coulson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Professor Tim Coulson</a> from the <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Oxford</a> has spent years studying biology and evolution. He believes our disappearance could open the door to surprising new species that take over Earth’s ecological roles.



In his book, <a href="https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/459065/the-universal-history-of-us-by-coulson-tim/9780241662304" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Universal History of Us</a>, he traces life’s entire history and zeroes in on a single, striking prediction about what might come next.



One of his main themes involves evolution, which he describes as the “gradual change in living organisms over time as they better adapt to their environments.”



He emphasizes that “most mutations are harmful, but a few provide a survival or reproductive advantage.” Because genes are heritable, these beneficial mutations become more common over generations.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-natural-selection-and-change">Natural selection and change</h2>



Mutations, in Coulson’s view, drive life forward despite the risks. Yet he reminds readers that no species is permanent.



“Extinction is the fate of all species, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-predict-how-and-when-humans-and-mammals-will-face-extinction/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">including humans</a>, although let’s hope our demise is far in the future.” 



That message can feel unsettling. But it also serves as a reminder that every life form, no matter how successful, eventually faces an endpoint.



Coulson’s outlook stems from years of research into how species emerge, survive, and sometimes vanish. “I started to wonder what species might take our place if humans, and our close great ape relatives, were to die out,” he says.



Once humans are removed from the picture, Earth's ecosystems could find balance again, which might allow new creatures to fill the empty slots.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-forms-of-intelligence-emerge">New forms of intelligence emerge</h2>



Nobody knows if the next ruling life form would mirror humanity. Coulson proposes that “new forms of intelligence and complexity could emerge in unexpected ways.”



This opens the possibility that a future species might come up with solutions and technologies unlike any we can picture right now.



Some believe that primates are the likeliest successors, but Coulson raises doubts.



“Primates depend heavily on strong social networks,” he explains, along with the idea that “they engage in activities like hunting, grooming, and defense, which are essential for their survival. These constraints might help them struggle to adjust to a world undergoing dramatic ecological shifts.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-successor-to-humans-on-earth">Potential successor to humans on Earth</h2>



In place of our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bonobos-group-cohesion-common-enemy-effect-do-not-kill-inside-their-species/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primate relatives</a>, Coulson offers a contender that many might find startling: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/world-octopus-day-the-intelligent-creatures-of-the-sea/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the octopus</a>. He points to their cleverness and adaptability.



“Their ability to solve complex problems, communicate with one another in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/blue-ringed-octopus-a-master-of-deception-inspires-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">flashes of color</a>, and manipulate objects suggests that, given the right <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/turquets-octopus-dna-tells-scientists-that-west-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse-is-close/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">environmental conditions</a>, they could evolve into a civilization-building species.”



He adds, “their advanced neural structure, decentralized nervous system, and remarkable problem-solving skills make several <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rare-dumbo-octopus-captured-on-film-and-video-in-hawaii/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">species of octopus</a> well suited for an unpredictable world.”



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/warming-seas-impair-octopus-vision-to-a-critical-extent/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Octopuses</a> already have a reputation for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/the-octopus-has-mastered-the-art-of-multispecies-hunting/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">being creative</a> and a bit mischievous. 



“Some individuals even escape from their tanks at night in some research centers, visiting those of their neighbors, believe it or not,” Coulson says. They are known to use tools, open jars, and display signs of curiosity.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-life-underwater">Life underwater</h2>



If humans were gone, oceans might become even more central to Earth’s future. Though land-based creatures have typically held top positions on the food chain, Coulson notes a critical challenge for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/do-octopuses-dream-a-recent-study-shows-octopuses-sleep-is-very-similar-to-humans/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopuses</a>.



“Octopuses are unlikely to adapt to life on land due to their lack of a skeleton, which makes swift and agile movement out of water challenging,” he explained.



"With evolutionary advances, it is possible, if not probable, that they might develop ways to breathe outside of water and eventually hunt terrestrial animals like deer, sheep, and other mammals - assuming they have survived the catastrophic event that drove humans extinct."



That sounds extreme. Yet Coulson is simply highlighting how evolution can lead life down paths that seem impossible at first.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-would-octopus-earth-look-like">What would octopus-Earth look like?</h2>



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopuses-adapt-to-seasonal-temperatures-by-rewiring-their-brains/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Octopuses</a> might build underwater habitats, find new ways to interact with their surroundings, and even reach beyond the waves one day.



“Would octopuses build vast underwater cities and come onto land wearing breathing apparatus to shoot a deer? We’ve no way of knowing,” he says.



No one predicted that ancient primates would slowly turn into bipedal humans with advanced technology.



Coulson believes that “random mutations, unforeseen extinction events, and population bottlenecks can all significantly influence the trajectory of evolution.” This means the future is wide open, shaped by countless variables that scientists can’t fully predict.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impossible-to-know-fun-to-think-about">Impossible to know, fun to think about</h2>



“The future of life on Earth is shaped by countless variables,” he points out. The path of evolution might take strange turns. Some scenarios might never pan out. Others could surprise us by unfolding in real time.



“But could <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/octopus-and-squid-senses-linked-to-human-brain-evolution/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">octopuses replace humans</a> - and potentially also <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primates-face-an-uncertain-future-due-to-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">primates</a> - if they were to die out? Absolutely. They could become the brains of the sea.”



For now, it remains an intriguing thought experiment to imagine aquatic invertebrates overseeing a planet once dominated by upright mammals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-imagining-earth-without-humans">Imagining Earth without humans</h2>



Coulson does not claim that this outcome is inevitable. Instead, he suggests it as a lesson in how nature might rearrange itself without us. 



Earth’s past is packed with examples of life enduring massive upheavals. It’s possible that intelligence, in some form, might spring up long after humans are gone.



His book underscores evolution’s capacity to produce forms and behaviors that seem strange from our perspective.



This speculation encourages us to think about the delicate nature of our own hold on the planet. Our species is part of a story that began ages ago, and life will keep moving forward, one step at a time.

In 2024, global warming propelled Earth to its hottest year on record. This is not just another statistic; it marks a defining moment in our struggle to curb rising temperatures.



This turning point, confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service, signals the first time the world has breached the 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 F) warming limit established by the 2015 Paris Agreement.



The global treaty seeks to curb the escalating impacts of climate change, but nature seems to be racing ahead and ignoring our best-laid plans.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-2024-continues-the-warming-trend">2024 continues the warming trend</h2>



The year 2023 was already somewhat hotter - by about 0.3 degrees Celsius to be precise - than its predecessor, 2022.



"And 2024 continued that trend of being warmer than the previous year," said Kevin Grise, associate professor of environmental sciences at the <a href="https://www.virginia.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Virginia</a>,



Professor Grise teaches courses such as Atmosphere and Weather, Introduction to Climatology, and Atmospheric Dynamics.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-predicting-future-weather-events">Predicting future weather events</h2>



Professor Grise's research is fueled by an ambitious goal – to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-weather-is-becoming-more-difficult-to-predict/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">predict future weather</a> events with greater precision.



This pursuit involves the use of intricate computer models that are designed to project the track of climate change based on current estimations. These models hold a mirror to the future, and reflect the potential consequences of a warming planet.



"A key focus is trying to understand whether we can confidently say these models are capturing the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/arctic-warming-influences-us-weather-patterns-ai-machine-learning/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">weather pattern</a> changes experts say are going to happen in our changing climate," noted Professor Grise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-less-relief-from-heat-at-night">Less relief from heat at night</h2>



Over his 11-year tenure at UVA, Grise has witnessed the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earths-global-temperature-exceeded-2c-for-the-first-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global temperature</a> tick upwards by approximately 0.5 degrees Celsius or about 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit.



His research highlights a shift in atmospheric dynamics and wind circulation patterns, altered by natural cycles and climate change.



For Virginia, the future may hold more heat waves as the climate continues its relentless change.



Professor Grise pointed out an often overlooked aspect of global warming - the nights are not as cool as they used to be.



"If people don't have access to air conditioning, it becomes even harder for them to cool off on very warm nights," he said.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-chaotic-symphony-of-weather-patterns">Chaotic symphony of weather patterns</h2>



The global warming footprint is manifested in the rise of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-causes-the-rapid-intensification-of-hurricanes/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stronger hurricanes</a>, extreme rainfall events, and fluctuating weather patterns.



For instance, Hurricane Beryl emerged as the earliest Category 5 storm in Atlantic history and the strongest to develop in June. 



Meanwhile, the U.S. city of Phoenix endured 113 consecutive days with a temperature hovering at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.



The year 2024 was also marked by 24 weather/climate disasters in the U.S., each causing losses exceeding $1 billion. 



This calamitous lineup included 17 severe storms, four tropical cyclones, one wildfire, and two winter storms - which collectively caused at least 418 deaths.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ocean-heat-waves-and-coastal-challenges">Ocean heat waves and coastal challenges </h2>



Professor Grise has been keeping an eye on another side effect of climate change as well - <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/marine-heat-waves-are-persisting-in-the-u-s-even-in-winter/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ocean heat waves</a>. These anomalies are disrupting marine habitats and fueling extreme weather events with unparalleled intensity.



"We've seen some unusual events that have huge impacts on ecosystems in the ocean and tropical systems. We saw the first ever Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin in June, and we saw [Hurricane] Milton hit Florida, which rapidly intensified within 24 hours - an almost 95 mph intensification," said Professor Grise. 



In coastal regions like Hampton Roads, rising sea levels and the potential for stronger hurricanes remain pressing concerns. 



"The hurricanes that do form have the potential to get stronger than we would expect because the water temperature is warmer," said Professor Grise. "The warmer air can have more water vapor in it, more humidity, and create even more extreme rainfall events."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-consequences-of-a-warmer-world">Consequences of a warmer world</h2>



Warmer temperatures and standing water also create ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed, potentially expanding habitats for insect-borne diseases.



This could lead to the spread of illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, and chikungunya into new areas.



This year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November, focused heavily on climate finance. 



Developed nations pledged to mobilize at least $300 billion per year by 2035, tripling the previous goal of $100 billion.



"From a policy perspective, the choices now are to focus climate mitigation and working to stop the emissions that are causing climate change or developing ways to adapt to a warmer world. Or a combination of the two," concluded Professor Grise.

The team demonstrated that reed beds use natural processes to degrade pollutants and reduce sludge - a hazardous byproduct of conventional <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bacteriophages-could-revolutionize-fracking-wastewater-treatment/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wastewater treatment</a>.



As nations grapple with increasing water and climate challenges, STRBs represent a critical step toward achieving global sustainability goals.

Reeds, which are vital to the process, help shape microbial populations and promote the growth of nitrifying bacteria and methanogens.

Meanwhile, Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria played significant roles in organic matter degradation and nutrient removal.



Reeds planted in the sludge created aerobic niches and released root exudates, which enhanced <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/microbes-activities-underground-revealed-by-new-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">microbial activity</a> and promoted the development of specialized rhizosphere communities.



With their contribution, STRBs achieved an impressive 98% reduction in sludge volume. The optimal performance for this was observed at a sludge loading rate of 100 kg/m2/year.



"These findings highlight the transformative potential of STRBs in sustainable wastewater management. By leveraging natural processes, STRBs offer an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods," noted Daniel Menezes Blackburn, the study's lead researcher.

A new report has revealed that 2024 was yet another year of record-breaking temperatures, which are driving the global water cycle to unprecedented climate extremes and are contributing to massive floods and crippling droughts.&nbsp;



According to the experts, this intense warming is pushing worldwide water systems to their limits.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-transformations-in-the-global-water-cycle">Transformations in the global water cycle</h2>



According to the 2024 Global Water Monitor Report, an international collaboration led by <a href="http://anu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ANU</a> Professor Albert van Dijk, rising temperatures are significantly changing the way water moves around the planet, “wreaking havoc” on the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/distress-signals-earths-water-cycle-is-becoming-more-erratic/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">water cycle</a>. 



With the planet growing steadily hotter, water evaporates more quickly, amplifying severe events like storms and droughts.



“Rising sea surface temperatures intensified tropical cyclones and droughts in the Amazon Basin and southern Africa. Global warming also contributed to heavier downpours and slower-moving storms, as evidenced by deadly flash floods in Europe, Asia and Brazil,” reported van Dijk.&nbsp;



The report notes that, in 2024, about four billion people across 111 countries experienced their hottest year to date, and that air temperatures over land have climbed 1.2 degrees Celsius since the start of the 21st century, roughly 2.2 degrees Celsius higher than the pre-industrial era.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-harsh-water-related-disasters">Harsh water-related disasters</h2>



“In 2024, Earth experienced its hottest year on record, for the fourth year in a row. Water systems across the globe bore the brunt,” van Dijk said.



He emphasized that 2024 was a year of extremes but was not an isolated occurrence. “It is part of a worsening trend of more intense <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-outrun-the-flood-risks-of-climate-change/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">floods</a>, prolonged droughts, and record-breaking extremes.”



Major water-driven calamities - flash floods, river floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and landslides - resulted in more than 8,700 deaths and displaced 40 million people worldwide, incurring economic losses exceeding US $550 billion.&nbsp;



“From historic droughts to catastrophic floods, these extreme events impact lives, livelihoods, and entire ecosystems. Separate, heavy rainfall events caused widespread flash flooding in Afghanistan and Pakistan, killing more than 1,000 people,” van Dijk said.&nbsp;



“Catastrophic flooding in Brazil caused more than 80 deaths, with the region recording more than 300 millimetres of rainfall.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-intensified-rainfall-extremes-and-flash-floods">Intensified rainfall extremes and flash floods</h2>



One of the report’s key findings is the increased frequency of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/extreme-rainfall-increases-as-a-direct-result-of-global-warming/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extreme rainfall</a>. 



“We found rainfall records are being broken with increasing regularity,” said van Dijk.



“For example, record-high monthly rainfall totals were achieved 27 percent more frequently in 2024 than at the start of this century, whereas daily rainfall records were achieved 52 percent more frequently. Record-lows were 38 percent more frequent, so we are seeing worse extremes on both sides.”



Van Dijk noted that in southern China, the Yangtze and Pearl Rivers flooded cities and towns, displacing tens of thousands of people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in crop damages. In August, heavy monsoon rains and dam releases in Bangladesh caused widespread river flooding.&nbsp;



“More than 5.8 million people were affected and at least one million tons of rice was destroyed. In Spain, more than 500 millimetres of rain fell within eight hours in late October, causing deadly flash floods,” said van Dijk.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-droughts-a-parallel-threat">Droughts: A parallel threat</h2>



While many regions contended with floods, others faced punishing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-is-now-the-driving-force-behind-droughts/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">droughts</a>. 



“In the Amazon Basin, one of the Earth’s most important ecosystems, record low river levels cut off transport routes and disrupted hydropower generation.”&nbsp;



“Wildfires driven by the hot and dry weather burned through more than 52,000 square kilometres in September alone, releasing vast amounts of greenhouse gases,” van Dijk added.



“In southern Africa, a severe drought reduced maize production by more than 50 percent, leaving 30 million people facing food shortages. Farmers were forced to cull livestock as pastures dried up. The drought also reduced hydropower output, leading to widespread blackouts.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-preparing-for-more-extreme-events">Preparing for more extreme events</h2>



Van Dijk warned of the growing necessity to prepare for more intense extremes.&nbsp;



“We need to prepare and adapt to inevitably more severe extreme events. That can mean stronger flood defences, developing more drought-resilient food production and water supplies, and better early warning systems.”&nbsp;



“Water is our most critical resource, and its extremes - both floods and droughts - are among the greatest threats we face.”

The skies above America's heartland have been getting increasingly volatile. Massive thunderstorms and extreme summer rainfalls have been dumping unprecedented amounts of rain across the central and eastern United States.



Backed by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), recent research sheds light on the link between prolonged thunderstorms and these intense downpours. The study offers critical insights into one of the most dangerous weather phenomena: flooding.

A team led by meteorologist Jason Chiappa analyzed high-resolution rain data that spanned 21 years, from 2003 to 2023.

“This research will help improve daily and seasonal forecasts to help us understand health and safety concerns related to one of the deadliest consequences from extreme rainfall events - flooding,” said Chungu Lu, an <a href="https://www.nsf.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NSF</a> program manager who supported the study.

Thunderstorms at the heart of these extreme rainfalls don’t follow a simple playbook. These storms often unleash their fury at night, a time when weather models struggle to predict them accurately. Convective rainfall, marked by its sudden and localized nature, poses a particular challenge. 



Current global weather and climate models lack the resolution and timing precision to capture reliably such small-scale but high-impact events.

Gan stressed the importance of understanding these regional differences to create effective wildfire management strategies. Since the causes and conditions of wildfires differ from one region to another, a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. 



Instead, strategies must be designed to address the specific factors driving wildfires in each area, such as fuel aridity, wind patterns, or vegetation types. This localized approach is essential to mitigate wildfire risks and their devastating impacts effectively .

As the planet gets warmer due to climate change, the factors that make wildfires worse are becoming more intense. Rising temperatures dry out vegetation, turning trees, shrubs, and grass into highly flammable fuel.

When vegetation burns, it releases large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. This adds to the buildup of greenhouse gases and further accelerates global warming.



In this way, wildfires create a dangerous cycle: climate change makes wildfires worse, and the wildfires, in turn, contribute to climate change.

For many, the recent anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami was a time for reflection and remembrance.



The disaster took the lives of more than 220,000 people from different countries and is ranked as the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-understanding-the-indian-ocean-tsunami">Understanding the Indian Ocean tsunami </h2>



It was 20 years ago, on a seemingly ordinary day, that an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/earthquake-activity-will-increase-due-to-glacial-retreat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">earthquake</a> of unprecedented magnitude occurred off the western coastline of Indonesia's Sumatra island.



Standing as the longest faultline rupture from a quake ever recorded, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-fracking-linked-to-mysterious-gentle-tremors/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seismic</a> event sent huge waves - some reaching heights of over 30 meters - sweeping across coastal regions in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other nations within the ocean basin.



Its energy release was enormous - the equivalent of 23,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. 



The earthquake was first recorded as having a magnitude of 8.8. The United States Geological survey later revised the official magnitude of the earthquake to 9.1 with a depth of 30 kilometers.



The epicenter was located 150 miles from the Sumatran coast.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-unforeseen-tsunami-tragedy">The unforeseen tsunami tragedy</h2>



Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, which is located in the Pacific's seismic activity hotbed known as the "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/why-the-atlantic-ocean-may-ultimately-vanish/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ring of Fire</a>," suffered immensely from the tsunami.



The disaster database EM-DAT reports that 226,408 people lost their lives due to the tsunami. Northern Sumatra was the most affected region in Indonesia, where more than 120,000 people perished.



The tsunami's massive waves didn't stay contained within Indonesia. They spread across the Indian Ocean at incredible speeds - over 800 kilometers per hour - reaching countries like Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand hours later.



The death toll in these countries was also staggering - over 35,000 in Sri Lanka, 16,389 in India, and 8,345 in Thailand.



Other countries like Somalia, the Maldives, Malaysia, and Myanmar also reported fatalities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tsunami-aftermath-and-recovery">Tsunami aftermath and recovery</h2>



More than 1.2 million people were left displaced in the wake of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/natural-disasters-are-on-the-rise-but-hazard-plans-are-inadequate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">disaster</a>. According to the United Nations, the international community promised to commit around $14 billion in disaster relief.



The scale of destruction was enormous with hundreds of thousands of buildings reduced to rubble, and entire communities left homeless.



However, the recovery trend has been promising, especially in cities like Banda Aceh where the rebuilding efforts have achieved significant transformation.



According to the Indonesian government, more than 100,000 houses have been rebuilt in the province of Aceh alone. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-protecting-vulnerable-coastal-communities">Protecting vulnerable coastal communities </h2>



Analyzing the cataclysmic event provides valuable insights into the importance of effective disaster preparedness.



Prior to the 2004 tsunami, there was no set system to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/can-we-detect-major-earthquakes-months-in-advance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">detect</a> and warn against such destructive events in the Indian Ocean. Today, with 1,400 detection stations worldwide, the warning time for tsunamis has considerably improved.



However, ocean scientists caution that even with all the advanced technology and investment, we still cannot prevent the devastating impacts of a catastrophic tsunami.



Ultimately, the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami is a tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit.



But at the same time, it is a reminder of the power of nature, and the need for continued vigilance, preparedness, and mitigation efforts to protect vulnerable coastal communities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-resilience-is-a-continuous-process">Resilience is a continuous process</h2>



The 2004 tsunami was a wake up call for the world and emphasized the urgent necessity to cooperate internationally in dealing with disaster risk reduction.



In the years after the tragedy, countries within the basin of the Indian Ocean established an Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System. It was launched under the supervision of the <a href="https://www.ioc.unesco.org/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission</a> of UNESCO.



The warning system has enabled real-time tsunami detection and promoted regional collaboration in emergency preparedness and response efforts.



Beyond technology, governments and NGOs have provided public information programs and evacuation drill exercises. Local knowledge has been integrated into strategies on how best to react during such scenarios.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.igb.illinois.edu/">Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology</a> reveals how scientists can modify common crops like soybean, rice, and wheat to protect them from heat stress.



“We need to double crop production by 2050 to feed a growing global population, and not only are we not on track to do that, but climate change is further complicating things,” said Amanda Cavanagh, a lecturer at the University of Essex. 



The study is part of Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency (RIPE), an international research project that aims to develop food crops that turn the sun’s energy into food more efficiently.



“Using an engineering approach we designed multiple alternative metabolic pathways to photorespiration. Testing them in the field showed increases in productivity which led Amanda to significantly move the project forward by showing our engineered plants can withstand pretty extreme temperature stress,” said study co-author and RIPE researcher Paul South.&nbsp;



“As the climate changes and temperature stresses increase the pressure on our global food supply, farmers will need every tool available including engineering approaches like the synthetic biology used here to maintain safe and productive harvests.”



The experts tested plants modified to have more efficient photorespiration to see if they were better adapted to warmer temperatures.&nbsp;



The team found that the engineered plants produced 26 percent more biomass than the wild-type plants exposed to the same temperatures, and had 15 percent less yield loss under the higher temperatures.

In an effort to measure the amount of carbon stored across these drylands, a team of scientists used high-resolution satellite images and artificial intelligence to map nearly 10 billion individual trees. 



"The high spatial resolution (50 cm) combined with AI and field measurements used in this study is key to improving tree inventories in drylands," said Pierre Hiernaux, a French researcher working for NASA. "The ever-increasing availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery will make it possible to assess carbon pools and their dynamics at the individual tree level on a global scale."



"This study is exceptional because it is pioneering a type of approach that will revolutionize the monitoring of trees and forests on a global scale: in the short term, it will be possible to map the world's trees from the centre of the Amazon to our schoolyards," said <a href="https://www.inrae.fr/en">INRAE</a> researcher Jean-Pierre Wigneron.



"Many fields of application will become much more efficient and accurate, such as tracking carbon stocks, biodiversity, monitoring logging and protection against illegal forest degradation, in near real time.”

ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

"Methane is an important greenhouse gas that contributes substantially to global warming. On a molecule by molecule basis, methane is much more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, the main driver of warming," says NASA.



"Though human activities, including agriculture, oil and natural gas production and use, and waste disposal, collectively contribute the majority of methane to the atmosphere, about a third of total methane emissions comes from wetlands."&nbsp;



According to NASA, understanding methane emissions from wetlands and other natural sources is critically important for scientists and policymakers who are working to combat climate change by reducing emissions from human activities.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://welcome.miami.edu/">University of Miami</a> Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science explores how changes in water temperatures have affected tiger shark habitats and movements in the North Atlantic Ocean. The study reveals that rising temperatures have caused the sharks to shift toward the poles over the past 40 years.



“Tiger shark annual migrations have expanded poleward, paralleling rising water temperatures,” explained study lead author Neil Hammerschlag. “These results have consequences for tiger shark conservation, since shifts in their movements outside of marine protected areas may leave them more vulnerable to commercial fishing.”



The researchers analyzed nine years of tracking data from satellite-tagged tiger sharks, combined with four decades of conventional tag and recapture data provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Shark Tagging Program.



The experts found that during the last decade of record heat, for every one-degree Celsius increase in water temperatures, tiger sharks migrated further poleward by over 400 kilometers. They also migrated two weeks earlier than usual to waters off the northeastern coast of the United States.



“Given their role as apex predators, these changes to tiger shark movements may alter predator-prey interactions, leading to ecological imbalances, and more frequent encounters with humans,” concluded Professor Hammerschlag.

Tiger sharks are shifting poleward as temperatures rise

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> is focused on the melt ponds that emerge during the spring and summer on the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the largest ice mass in the northern hemisphere.



"Melt ponds are vast pools of open water that form on both sea ice and ice sheets and are visible as turquoise-blue pools of water in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image," says ESA.



"When snow and ice melts atop glaciers, water flows in channels and streams and collects in depressions on the surface. These melt ponds can speed up the melting of the surrounding ice since they greatly reduce the ice’s ability to reflect sunlight."



"This can create a positive feedback where an increasing number of melt ponds absorb more heat which causes ice cover to melt even faster."



According to ESA, Greenland has been hit with a late-season heatwave that began in early September. This caused the type of melt event that usually occurs in the middle of summer.



"In a recent paper published in Nature Climate Change, scientists found that major sea-level rise from the melting of the Greenland ice cap is now ‘inevitable’ even if the burning of fossil fuels were to halt overnight," says ESA. "Using satellite observations of Greenland ice loss and ice cap from 2000 to 2019, the team found the losses will lead to a minimum rise of 27 cm regardless of climate change."

But now, the water cycle is shifting as the climate warms, and scientists must find ways to predict how these changes will affect water availability.



Overall, 96 percent of Earth's water is saltwater, and nearly all of freshwater is found in ice and groundwater. These sources of water are linked as it passes through solid, liquid and gas phases.



In a warmer climate, the water cycle will be transformed. It will be easier for water to evaporate and form clouds, and storms will become more frequent and intense. Some regions will get too much water, while others will be left without enough water. In addition, soil moisture will be lost - which threatens food security.



Scientists are using satellite data from over the last 40 years to track changes that are happening in the water cycle. This will ultimately help us prepare for extreme events and better manage our water resources, according to ESA.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard Space Flight Center</a> features images of Saturn from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The photographs capture the start of the mysterious "spoke season" on Saturn - when unexplained features appear on its rings. 



According to NASA, both the cause of the spokes and their seasonal variability have yet to be fully explained by planetary scientists.



"Like Earth, Saturn is tilted on its axis and therefore has four seasons, though because of Saturn's much larger orbit, each season lasts approximately seven Earth years. Equinox occurs when the rings are tilted edge-on to the Sun," explains NASA.



"The spokes disappear when it is near summer or winter solstice on Saturn. (When the Sun appears to reach either its highest or lowest latitude in the northern or southern hemisphere of a planet.) As the autumnal equinox of Saturn's northern hemisphere on May 6, 2025, draws near, the spokes are expected to become increasingly prominent and observable."



Experts believe that the spokes may be a product of the planet's variable magnetic field. When magnetic fields interact with solar wind, an electrically charged environment is created. This phenomenon is visible on Earth as the northern lights.&nbsp;



"Scientists think that the smallest, dust-sized icy ring particles can become charged as well, which temporarily levitates those particles above the rest of the larger icy particles and boulders in the rings," says NASA.



The spokes were first observed in the early 1980s by NASA's Voyager mission. Depending on the angle of the rings, the spokes can appear dark or light.



"Thanks to Hubble's OPAL program, which is building an archive of data on the outer solar system planets, we will have longer dedicated time to study Saturn’s spokes this season than ever before," said NASA senior planetary scientist Amy Simon, head of the Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program.



"Despite years of excellent observations by the Cassini mission, the precise beginning and duration of the spoke season is still unpredictable, rather like predicting the first storm during hurricane season."
