Healthy eating often feels like a moving target. Advice flips, trends flare up, and people are left unsure about what actually supports the heart.



A careful look at spicy food offers a clear signal worth your attention. A new population analysis from Sichuan Province, China, tracked adults and linked frequent chili intake to lower rates of major heart and brain events.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spicy-food-and-heart-health">Spicy food and heart health</h2>



<a href="https://loop.frontiersin.org/people/706473/bio" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Marialaura Bonaccio</a> of <a href="https://www.reteneuroscienze.it/en/Istituto/irccs-istituto-neurologico-mediterraneo-neuromed/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IRCCS</a> Neuromed has spent years studying chili peppers and heart outcomes in Europe, and her work helps frame this topic globally. 



Her perspective complements findings from China while reminding us to keep lifestyle and culture in the mix.



The Chinese team analyzed 54,859 adults and found that compared with people who rarely ate spicy food, those who ate it 6 to 7 days per week were less likely to develop ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases. 



They also saw a reduced risk of ischemic stroke, a blockage in brain blood flow, with the likelihood of these problems dropping further as spicy food consumption became more frequent.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/spicy-foods-can-slow-down-eating-and-cut-calorie-intake/">Moderate spice</a> intensity tracked with a lower overall risk of cardio and cerebrovascular disease in the cohort. 



Starting regular spicy intake earlier in life also lined up with lower risk, although the effect did not extend to hemorrhagic stroke.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-food-gets-spicy">How food gets spicy</h2>



The main bioactive in chilies is <a href="https://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/capgen.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">capsaicin</a>, which is responsible for the burning sensation people feel when eating spicy foods. 



Beyond taste, capsaicin works on a special sensor in the body, found in nerves and in the lining of blood vessels. 



When this sensor is stimulated regularly, research in animals shows that it can increase the natural production of nitric oxide, a chemical that relaxes blood vessels and helps blood flow more smoothly. 



This process has also been linked to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trying-to-lower-your-blood-pressure-this-common-nutrient-can-help/">lower blood pressure</a>, especially in animals with hypertension, which is long term high blood pressure.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-capsaicin-and-arteries">Capsaicin and arteries</h2>



These changes are important because they improve the overall health of the inner walls of arteries. 



Strong, flexible arteries are better able to expand and contract, which reduces the workload on the heart and lowers the chance of damage over time. 



Better vessel relaxation means the circulatory system can adjust more easily when the body needs more blood flow, such as during exercise or stress.



Capsaicin’s impact is not just about the immediate burning feeling on the tongue. Inside the body, it sets off chemical signals that affect how cells behave. 



Over time, researchers have measured changes in proteins connected to nitric oxide pathways, and these shifts line up with long term improvements in how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tiny-blood-vessels-may-fuel-the-spread-of-cancer-cells/">blood vessels function</a>. 



This suggests that eating spicy foods regularly may provide benefits for cardiovascular health that go well beyond flavor or temporary sensation.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-this-fits-with-past-evidence">How this fits with past evidence</h2>



Large-scale work in China from 2004 to 2013 linked frequent spicy eating to lower all cause mortality. 



In that <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26242395/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study,</a> participants who ate spicy food 6 or 7 days per week had a 14 percent lower risk of death than those who ate it less than once a week, with inverse associations also seen for ischemic heart disease and respiratory diseases.



A separate Italian <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31856971/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cohort</a> found that people who ate chili peppers more than four times per week had lower total and cardiovascular mortality. The association persisted even when researchers accounted for adherence to the Mediterranean diet.



Findings from the Italian study showed that chili pepper consumption appeared to offer protection for the heart even when overall eating habits differed. 



The benefit was seen both in people who followed a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mediterranean-diet-boosts-brain-power-by-altering-the-gut/">Mediterranean diet</a> and in those whose diets were less healthy, suggesting that the positive effect of chili peppers was consistent across different dietary patterns. 



Marialaura Bonaccio, who also led this study, underscored this point when presenting the results.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-spicy-food-means-in-real-life">What spicy food means in real life</h2>



None of these studies say <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mild-chili-peppers-may-be-the-anti-spice-weve-been-looking-for/">chili peppers</a> cure heart disease. They do say that in large groups of people, more frequent spicy intake is linked to fewer heart and brain problems across time.



This is observational research, so cause and effect remain open questions. Still, the consistency across settings argues that spicy eating patterns often travel with other helpful choices or may deliver direct biological benefits.



Spice strength matters too. The Chinese work reported signals at weak to moderate levels, which gels with the simple idea that daily habits beat extremes.



Whole chilies, simple sauces, and meals that use chili to season real food are sensible places to start. People with reflux, ulcers, or other conditions should adjust to tolerance and talk to a clinician if symptoms flare.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-limits-and-what-comes-next">Limits and what comes next</h2>



A much larger China Kadoorie Biobank incidence <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12273639/">paper</a> followed 486,335 adults for a median of 12.1 years. 



They found lower risks of vascular disease in people who ate spicy foods one to seven days per week, with trends that held for ischemic heart disease and major coronary events. 



The association was particularly clear in younger adults and those living in rural regions.



It is also possible that people who enjoy spicy foods eat differently in other ways, or live in places where chili use reflects cultural patterns that bring other benefits or risks. 



Careful sensitivity checks, such as excluding early events, help probe these points but do not close the book on causality.



Future studies could test how foods high in capsaicin or standardized chili products influence blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood vessel health over time. 



Researchers could also examine how chili affects nitric oxide activity in people by using amounts similar to those found in everyday cooking.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cutting-through-the-noise">Cutting through the noise</h2>



Nutrition debates can feel noisy, yet some messages are steady. Frequent <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/eating-chili-during-pregnancy-may-actually-be-a-good-idea/">chili</a> use, inside a balanced pattern of eating, shows a consistent association with better heart and brain outcomes across very different populations.



People do not need to chase extreme heat or complicated protocols. A modest, regular habit built around meals you enjoy is easier to keep, and the data suggest that rhythm matters more than bragging rights.



Taste and tolerance vary, so personal comfort should lead the way. If spicy foods agree with you, using chilies to season home cooked meals looks like a choice with upside and little downside for most healthy adults.

Symbiotic relationships take many forms that can serve the whole ecosystem. Life on Earth is made up of a complex network of relationships between different species. These relationships come in many forms, from predators hunting prey to plants providing habitat. The most deeply intertwined of these relationships are referred to as symbiosis. 

Symbiosis is a long-term, close relationship between two or more species. These relationships can <a href="https://projects.ncsu.edu/cals/course/ent525/close/goodbuddies.html">take many forms</a>. Though many classic examples benefit all species involved, this is not a requirement. Some forms of symbiosis are “unequal.” Parasitic relationships that threaten the wellbeing of the host can even be considered symbiotic.

Symbiotic relationships create many complex ecological interactions. These relationships hint at the ways in which the members of ecosystems can <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13752-014-0194-7">interact like the organs of an organism</a>. These relationships are essential to many biological processes in humans and our world. 

You encounter symbiosis more often in your day to day life than you might imagine. One well-known example is your <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/what-is-microbiomics/">microbiome</a>. These organisms live in your gut and many other parts of your body. They provide essential services like digesting complex sugars, protecting against infections, and training your immune system. These creatures are your own symbionts.
<h2>Mutualism</h2>
Mutualism is the friendliest of these symbiotic relationships. In mutualistic symbiosis, both (or all) species involved benefit from the relationship. These relationships allow species to show off their skills. Organisms that are very skilled at one task will provide this service to another species in exchange for something they need.
<h3>Examples</h3>
There are many examples of mutualism in the natural world. One of the most commonly used examples is how plants collect nitrogen. All living things need nitrogen to build <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia-articles/what-is-proteomics/">protein</a>. Though diatomic nitrogen gas is abundant in the atmosphere, plants cannot use this form. Instead, they rely on bacteria and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fungi-everywhere/">fungi</a> to “fix” nitrogen. Legumes (which include most beans) owe their high protein content to these relationships. Other <a href="https://www.caseyhofford.com/2018/10/16/fungi-are-friends-not-foes/">plants actually interact with fungi to indirectly “eat” bugs</a> to gain their protein.
<h2>Commensalism</h2>
Commensalism is a form of symbiosis that only benefits one of the partners. In commensalism, the host is not harmed by the relationship but does not benefit either. The commensal organism may get protection, transportation, shelter or even the scraps of the host's last meal. The term comes from the Latin “Commensalis,” meaning “sharing a table.”
<h3>Examples</h3>
Hermit crabs are a great example of this behavior. In this relationship, the crabs use the discarded shells of snails as their homes. The hermit crab gains protection from what is essentially a waste product of another species. 

Cattle egrets are another great example of commensalism. These bug-eating birds hang out around cattle, waiting to feast on the bugs that are inevitably stirred up. 
<h2>Parasitism</h2>
Parasitism is possibly the most common form of symbiosis. In parasitism, one species benefits at the expense of another species. The parasite benefits by stealing food, energy or other resources. Unlike predation, parasitism is long-term and ongoing. Many organisms have parasitic stages in their lives.
<h3>Examples</h3>
The number of parasitic relationships in the natural world is huge. Parasitic relationships can be seen in every ecosystem and taxon. Here are a few well known and interesting examples.

<a href="https://necsi.edu/parasitic-relationships">Aphids are plant parasites</a> that use the plant as a long-term source of food. They continually parasitize the plant, decreasing its growth and reproductive success.

<a href="https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/parasitoid-wasps-hymenoptera">Parasitic wasps</a> are a large group of obligate parasites (they can only survive by eating eggs.) These species sound horrifying but are actually quite helpful. These wasps primarily eat the eggs of garden pests. This makes them a great biological control measure.

<h2>Amensalism</h2>
A far more uncommon form of symbiosis is called amensalism. In this relationship, one species <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/amensalism">harms the other, without receiving a direct benefit</a>. Some organisms will actually secrete toxins to harm or kill their neighbors. This differs from predation or parasitism because the attacker is not feeding on its victim. It also differs from competition, which occurs in all ecosystems. Instead, amensalism reduces competition to gain an indirect benefit.
<h3>Examples</h3>
Though amensalism is less common than other forms of symbiosis, it has some amazing results. The first antibiotic, penicillin, was derived from the penicillium fungus. The mold produced<a href="https://study.com/academy/lesson/amensalism-examples-definition-quiz.html"> penicillin in order to kill bacteria</a> growing nearby. The discovery of this relationship led to one of the biggest leaps in modern medicine. Due to overuse, <a href="http://v">antibiotics are becoming less effective</a>. This poses a huge threat to humanity.

A new study published by the <a href="https://www.aaas.org/">American Association for the Advancement of Science</a> is one of the first of its kind to investigate how altered soils may impact plant water uptake over the long term. The researchers found that plants in soil leached by acid rain take up a significantly larger amount of water. 

The findings suggest that acid rain has a persistent impact on large-scale forest water cycles, which is important to understand for predicting future water availability. According to the study authors, the research may also help explain some of the uncertainty scientists have encountered in terrestrial biosphere models.

A team led by Matthew Lanning investigated changes in soil water available to plants in the Fernow Experimental Forest of West Virginia. This forest is the site of a decades-long watershed acidification experiment. 

The scientists used 23 years of lysimeter data to estimate the transfer of water from <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/sea-level-rises-wetlands-store-carbon/">soil</a> to the atmosphere. They also used  traditional estimates of the differences between precipitation and water discharge from plants. 

The analysis showed that the acidified watershed had much higher soil-to-atmosphere water transfer compared to the water transfer amount in a "control" watershed. The lysimeter data confirmed this by demonstrating that the average volume of the treated watershed was significantly lower than the control. 

The researchers believe that soil acidification causes calcium to leach from the soil. Since calcium plays an important role in signaling plant stomata to close, the absence of calcium would cause the pores to remain open instead of closing to prevent water loss. As a result, evapotranspiration would continue, causing greater water uptake by the plants.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

Common flowering plant contains compound with anti-cancer properties. In a groundbreaking new study, researchers at the <a href="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/">University of Birmingham</a> have demonstrated that a compound with anti-cancer properties can be produced directly from a common flowering plant in the daisy family known as feverfew.

The team extracted and modified the compound it so that it could be used to kill chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) cells in the lab.

Feverfew is commonly grown in gardens across the UK. It is also sold in many health food stores as a treatment for pain and <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/smartphone-app-migraine-therapy/">migraine headaches</a>. 

Several years ago, the compound parthenolide was identified by scientists as having anti-cancer properties. Even though it is available commercially, parthenolide is extremely expensive with poor drug-like properties.

"This research is important not only because we have shown a way of producing parthenolide that could make it much more accessible to researchers, but also because we've been able to improve its 'drug-like' properties to kill cancer cells. It's a clear demonstration that parthenolide has the potential to progress from the flowerbed into the clinic," explained Professor John Fossey.

The experts developed a method to source parthenolide directly from the plants, and also identified a modification technique which allowed them to produce a number of compounds that successfully killed cancer cells during lab experiments. 

According to the researchers, the parthenolide compound appears to work by increasing the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cells. These unstable molecules are already abundant in cancer cells, and the objective is to push ROS levels to a deadly point using parthenolide.  

The study was initiated by Dr. Angelo Agathanggelou of the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Studies. He is investigating new ways to treat a type of cancer which typically affects older people called chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).

"There are several effective treatments for CLL, but after a time the disease in some patients becomes resistant. We were interested in finding out more about the potential of parthenolide," said Dr. Agathanggelou. "With expertise from colleagues in the School of Chemistry we've been able to demonstrate that this compound shows real promise and could provide alternative treatment options for CLL patients."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.rsc.org/journals-books-databases/about-journals/medchemcomm/">MedChemComm</a>.

Low in calories and high in nutrients, blueberries are tied to a number of powerful effects including protection against aging and cancer prevention. A collection of research published by the <a href="https://www.geron.org/">Gerontological Society of America</a> is now placing new emphasis on the health benefits that can be achieved simply by adding <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/blueberries-grown-grass/">blueberries</a> to your diet. 

In an opening editorial, Dr. Donald K. Ingram explained that studies focused on the health effects of blueberries have grown "exponentially" since the 1990s.

"Studies have documented that this fruit ranks highest in antioxidant activity compared to many other popular fruits. Moreover, other mechanisms for the health benefits of blueberries, such as their anti-inflammatory properties, have been identified," noted Dr. Ingram.

Among the four articles collected, one study found that consuming about a cup of blueberries a day can improve blood vessel function and decrease systolic blood pressure. The researchers found that these remarkable results can be attributed to anthocyanins, which are phytochemicals that give blueberries their dark color.

Other studies highlighted the cognitive benefits of eating blueberries. For example, the fruit's high polyphenol count has been linked to improved performance on memory tests among older adults. 

For one investigation, researchers used a rodent model to demonstrate the cognitive influence of blueberry consumption among aging rats. The trial revealed that the animals who regularly ate blueberries had significantly improved memory performance compared to rats who were fed a diet that was not supplemented. 

In another article, the researchers reviewed several clinical tests that focused on the potential advantages of blueberry supplementation. The team identified specific memory gains in children as well as older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

The studies are published in <a href="https://academic.oup.com/biomedgerontology">The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences</a>.

Blueberries offer a wide variety of remarkable health benefits

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/population-plant-based-diets/">Plant-based diets</a> have gained a great deal of traction recently due to the harmful environmental impacts of the meat and dairy industry. 

However, a new editorial published in the journal <a href="https://nutrition.bmj.com/lookup/doi/10.1136/-2019-000037">BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, and Health</a> warns against jumping on new dietary recommendations that limit meat and dairy products as it could also limit your intake of an essential nutrient.

Choline is considered a vital nutrient because while we need it to function. The body does not produce enough of it on its own and we have to get nutrients like choline and omega-3 fatty acids from food. 

Beef, eggs, dairy products, fish, and chicken are all foods high in choline, and you can get choline from peanuts, beans or broccoli but at much lower levels. 

Dr. Emma Derbyshire, a nutritionist and author of the editorial, discussed the importance of choline and the problem with limiting choline-rich foods from regular diets.

Derbyshire worries that because people already don’t get enough choline on a day-to-day basis, switching to a recommended plant-based diet could make a problem much worse. 

Choline helps brain health and liver function. In 1998, the US Institute of Medicine established recommended daily intakes of choline ranging from 425 milligrams per day for women and 550 milligrams per day for men. 

The <a href="https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en">European Food Safety Authority </a>also proposed daily choline requirements in 2016, but in North America, Europe, and Australia, average daily choline intake is typically lower than the recommended guidelines. 

Derbyshire recommends that the<a href="https://eatforum.org/eat-lancet-commission/"> 2019 EAT-Lancet report,</a> which is the first food plan of its kind that promotes environmental sustainability, factor in foods high in choline.

The editorial also calls for further study, educating healthcare professions and the public about choline intake, and that choline is included in UK diet monitoring efforts. 

“The mounting evidence of choline’s importance makes it essential that it does not continue to be overlooked in the UK,” Derbyshire wrote. “This is now more important than ever given that accelerated food trends towards plant-based diets/ veganism could have further ramifications on choline intake/status.”

South Africa is of course known for its variety of iconic animals from penguins and great white sharks to elephants and lions. The country is also <a href="https://www.awf.org/country/south-africa">ranked</a> as number six in the world’s 17 mega diverse countries.

Additionally, South Africa is home to the largest population of rhinoceros in Africa. South Africa’s animals are often targeted for poaching as well, and rhinos, elephants and other animals are valuable for their body parts sold on the international black market. This is what has long made Africa one of the frontlines of the battle for biological conservation.  

Considering the animal life in South Africa, it’s unsurprising that there is an enormous amount of plant diversity in the country as well. There are approximately 20,000 <a href="https://www.fauna-flora.org/countries/south-africa">plant species</a> found in South Africa, which is home to one of only six floral kingdoms worldwide – the Cape Floral Kingdom. 70% of the Cape Floral Kingdom’s 9,000+ plant species don’t occur outside of the local region. Unfortunately, plant life in South Africa is threatened as well.

Over the period of 300 years, 79 plants were confirmed to have gone extinct in several biodiversity hotspots in South Africa. New research shows that this represents a shockingly large percentage of plant biodiversity for South Africa. According to research published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(19)30943-1?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982219309431%3Fshowall%3Dtrue">Current Biology</a>, this loss of biodiversity in South Africa represents 45.4% of all known plant extinctions from 10 of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. 

The plant loss in South Africa goes as far back as the 1700s when the first recorded loss of a plant species occurred. The plant was a species of fountainbush (Psoralea cataracta) that lived near streams. Plant extinctions in South Africa have also occurred as recently as 2012 when a rare species of vygie went extinct due to urbanization and human development. It’s sometimes more challenging to determine the extinction of a plant species than it is with the more charismatic animals. 

As many as 431 plant species have been declared extinct, only to be later rediscovered. Plants, small, nondescript, many of which require a specialist to identify are easier to overlook than many animals. Plants can also hide out as seeds or very small immature specimens that can be missed. Some of the plants now declared extinct could potentially be rediscovered, but the plant extinction rates are still something to take very seriously, not just in South Africa but across the world as well. 

A <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/333679673_Global_dataset_shows_geography_and_life_form_predict_modern_plant_extinction_and_rediscovery">new study</a> found that since 1750, 571 plant species have gone extinct worldwide. Although some plant extinction is normal and not all of it can be attributed to humans, the number of plant extinctions rose sharply after the industrial revolution. The rate of plant extinctions now is 500 times greater than before the industrial revolution. What may be most disturbing is that there are likely even more plant extinctions than those recorded and 571 species is likely an underestimate. 

Islands are some of the most likely places to find confirmed plant extinctions. It’s easier to be sure that a plant has been wiped out from a limited area such as an island, and it’s also easier for a plant in such an area to be threatened. 

Hawaii was the one place surveyed in the study that had a higher number of plant extinctions than South Africa. <a href="https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/ecosystems/rare-plants/">Hawaii</a> is home to 1,400 vascular plant taxa, 90% of which are found only in Hawaii. More than 100 plant taxa have already gone extinct there.

Hawaii has also lost its share of animal species and more may die off in the near future. The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/is-hawaii-the-extinction-capital-of-the-world-exhibit-a-the-alala-bird/2016/04/25/3f45c6ac-f210-11e5-89c3-a647fcce95e0_story.html">Washington Post</a> reports that of the 1,225 endangered species listed by the <a href="https://www.fws.gov/">US Fish &amp; Wildlife Service</a>, 481 of them are from Hawaii. 

The island state contains <a href="https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/ecosystems/rare-plants/">44%</a> of all endangered and threatened plant species in the US. Invasive threats like <a href="https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/hisc/info/">non-native</a> avian malaria and fire ants have devastated many native species. Unfortunately, often the loss of one species in an area can lead to the loss of more. Even extinctions that don’t lead to a cascade effect are often indicative of an underlying problem that may cause more extinctions. The high rate of plant extinctions in particular doesn’t bode well for animals. 

Plants are of course support almost all life on Earth. By synthesizing their own food from the sun and soil nutrients, plants are the basis of food webs. Plants are also vital in creating oxygen and are used for habitat by numerous species. Birds make nests in trees, caterpillars weave cocoons on particular plants, tigers stalk through grass, even humans build houses from trees or bamboo. Plants are used as tools by primates and birds. Sea grasses are both hiding spots and food sources. Cavities made into saguaro cactus turn into places to hide from the desert sun. Habitats are made cooler and wetter by the presence of plants, which sometimes even partially create the climate of a region. The importance of plants makes it unsurprising that high plant extinctions lead to high animal extinctions. 

The <a href="https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2019/05/nature-decline-unprecedented-report/">United Nations reported</a> earlier this year that <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/extinction-crisis-solutions/">extinction rates</a> are at an unprecedented high. According to the UN, as many as 1 million species are threatened with extinction. The report called for ‘transformative change’ in human society from local to national and international levels to stop the disintegration of global ecosystems. The average abundance of native species in continental habitats has dropped by 20% the world over, and even the native species not threatened with extinction are less common. 

The loss of diversity driven by humans has the potential to hurt us as well. Not only wild species have gone extinct. More than 9% of mammal breeds used in agriculture had gone extinct by 2016. Combined with a loss of natural environments, this puts humanity’s food supply in a precarious position. The loss of wild plants can lead to the loss of pollinators and indeed the loss of domestic crops. If humanity is to save itself as well as the beautiful forms it shares Earth with, the time is now.

Scientists may have found the key to developing flood-resistant crops. Rice is the only major food crop that can survive flooding, but a new genetic study from <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">UC Riverside</a> may ultimately lead to the creation of additional flood-resistant crops. The potential breakthrough comes at a time when <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-impact-soil/">climate change</a> is pushing rainfall patterns to the extremes. 

"This is the first time that a flooding response has been looked at in a way that was this comprehensive, across evolutionarily different species," said study co-author Professor Siobhan Brady.

For the investigation, the researchers examined how a wild-growing tomato, a tomato used for farming, and a plant similar to alfalfa responded to being submerged in water compared to rice. 

The study revealed that all of the plants shared at least 68 families of genes that are activated in response to flooding, which are called submergence up-regulated families (SURFs).

"Since evolution separated the ancestors of rice and these other species as many as 180 million years ago, we did not expect to find 68 SURFs in common," said co-author Professor Neelima Sinha.

Rice was domesticated from wild species that grew in tropical regions, where it evolved to endure monsoons and waterlogging. Some of the genes involved in this adaptation were found in the other plants, but were not effective in response to flooding around the roots.

"We hope to take advantage of what we learned about rice in order to help activate the genes in other plants that could help them survive waterlogging," said study lead author Professor Julia Bailey-Serres.

The team analyzed cells located at the tips of the plant roots to understand whether and how their genes were activated when they became submerged in water and deprived of oxygen.

"We looked at the way that DNA instructs a cell to create particular stress response in a level of unprecedented detail," said study co-author Mauricio Reynoso. 

Although the SURFs were activated in all the plants during the flooding experiments, only the genetic responses observed in rice were effective enough for survival. The researchers will conduct additional studies to improve the flood survival rates of other crops.

"Imagine a world where kids do not have enough calories to develop," said Professor Bailey-Serres. "We as scientists have an urgency to help plants withstand floods, to ensure food security for the future."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Scientists may have found the key to developing flood-resistant crops....

Global deforestation and the slow progress to protect the forests. Costa Rica previously had one of the fastest rates of deforestation in the world. In just a few decades, forest cover dropped from 70 percent to 20 percent by the 1980s. 

Today, Costa Rica is known for its lush tropical forests, ecotourism, and conservation. Somehow Costa Rica went from rapid rates of deforestation to zero, allowing for forest growth and sustainable land use. This dramatic reversal was only made possible by a shift in <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/06/costa-rica-has-doubled-its-tropical-rainforests-in-just-a-few-decades-here-s-how/">government policies</a>. 

Costa Rica’s government restricted logging permits, and a national forest fund was created to offer incentives to farmers who protected and conserved their land. 

Unfortunately, Costa Rica’s conservation success story is the exception rather than the norm. Many people continue to take and take from our planet, burning through -- quite literally -- its natural resources as if there is no endpoint. 

This summer, thousands of wildfires were recorded across the Amazon Rainforest. According to <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/08/amazon-fires-cause-deforestation-graphic-map/">National Geographic,</a> at the end of August, there were around 76,000 fires, an increase of 80 percent compared to the year prior. 

The increase in fires has been linked to illegal clearing and loosening restrictions on development in the region. 

“The government doesn’t have any governance over what is going on,” Ane Alencar, science director for the <a href="https://ipam.org.br/en/">Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM)</a>, told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/amazon-still-fire-conservation-groups-blame-illegal-logging-criminal-networks-n1056236">NBC News</a>. 

According to a recent IPAM <a href="https://ipam.org.br/most-amazon-fires-break-out-on-private-properties-and-undesignated-forests/">report</a>, 33 percent of the fires were started on private land, and 20 percent of the fires occurred in public, undesignated forests. 

“The primary trigger that set off this burning season in the Amazon was not drought but high levels of deforestation,” Alencar said in a statement. “This year has not been particularly dry compared to previous years. 

Meanwhile, with all eyes on the Amazon, hundreds of intentionally set fires burned across Indonesian Borneo and Sumatra earlier this month. The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/17/world/asia/indonesia-fires-photos.html">New York Times</a> reported that the fires produced so much smoke schools were forced to close, and thousands of people were breathing in toxic air. 

The purpose of the fires was to clear land for palm plantations, a crop that has resulted in the loss of thousands of acres of rainforest in Southeast Asia. 

The fires pose a threat to orangutans that live in the <a href="http://www.bos-uk.org/programs/mawas/">Mawas Conservation Area</a> on the island of Borneo. 

“The Mawas Conservation Area and the orangutan population are threatened by these fires and if the habitat burns these orangutans have nowhere to go,” said Erin R. Vogel, an endangered orangutan expert, and professor at the Department of Anthropology at <a href="https://www.rutgers.edu/">Rutgers University</a>. “In addition to the harmful effects of the fires on human health, our past research has shown that the carbon emissions and smoke produced by these fires are extremely harmful to orangutan health.”

Orangutans in Indonesia have become endangered, with populations declining by 50 percent as their habits have grown increasingly fragmented over the years due to demand for palm oil. 

Deforestation is a global issue and one that directly contributes to climate change. 

Logging in Canada to meet the demand for tissue paper results in the loss of thousands of acres of boreal forest each year. <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/resources/issue-tissue-how-americans-are-flushing-forests-down-toilet">One report</a> by the <a href="https://www.nrdc.org/">NRDC</a> found that between 1996 and 2018, more than 28 million acres of boreal forest were logged. 

While tree-pulp paper products generate billions of dollars in revenue each year, logging is degrading Canadian forest habitats and threatening indigenous communities that rely on the boreal ecosystem. 

Not only does logging destroy trees, but the practice generates millions of tons of carbon emissions each year which, in turn, accelerates the pace of climate change. 

But if Costa Rica is the exception and fires continue to spread across the Amazon Rainforest at a record-breaking rate, what can be done to protect and restore the world’s forests? 

This question becomes even more complicated when you factor in the predicted increases in food demand due to a growing global population and climate change. 

A recent report by the <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=1RRnedA5wgCM0-PFuqu2txA4ZTLwglKIMluz-OrJw73M">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a> found that 72 percent of all ice-free land on Earth is used to support the global population. 

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sustainable-agriculture-food-shortages/">Agriculture</a> and forestry make up a considerable part of land use, but without sustainable management of these systems emissions will increase, land degradation and habitat loss will increase, species will become extinct and the very resources we need to feed, clothe, and shelter the human population will grow scarce. 

While there are efforts to stem the tide of deforestation, the progress is slow going and limited. 

That’s the major takeaway of a report by the <a href="https://nydfglobalplatform.org/">New York Declaration on Forests</a> (NYDF). The NYDF began in 2014 and has since gained the support of 200 endorsers, a mix of governments, organizations, and companies all committed to stopping global deforestation. 

Recently, the NYDF released its <a href="https://forestdeclaration.org/images/uploads/resource/2019NYDFReport.pdf">five-year assessment report</a>, and the results show that very little progress has been made in the way of keeping in line with the project’s goals. This is not to say that there has been zero progress, but outpacing climate change and the increasing rates of deforestation in many regions will require a mammoth effort. 

“Protecting forests will require an integrated and comprehensive forest strategy that involves

the coordination of governments — including both producing and importing countries —as well as companies, civil society, and indigenous peoples’ organizations,” the NYDF report concludes. This strategy must explicitly align efforts to preserve primary forests, sustainably manage production forests, and restore natural forests in degraded landscapes.

Sustainable management of land use is the call to action we all must rally behind.

Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, tobacco, mandrake, and datura are close relatives. They are all members of the infamous nightshade family (Solanaceae.) Many of its members are actually deadly toxic. Some have been used to create psychoactive brews and potions. Others were Shakespeare's poison of choice. This has led to their association with witchcraft and evil. However, nightshades also include some of the world’s most popular foods. 

This contrast reveals the complexity of this plant family. What is clear is that the nightshades have played a large role in many cultures. The foods, drugs, and poisons derived from this family have played essential roles at key moments in history.

The infamy of Solanaceae is well deserved, so let’s take a closer look at a few of this family’s most interesting and famous historical cameos.
<h2>A Witch’s Flying Ointments</h2>
Flying ointments are herbal preparations associated with “witchcraft.” They are theorized to be the historical origin of the trope of a “witch on a broomstick”.

These preparations were psychoactive oil-based extracts or salves. They were likely an <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20411/20411-h/20411-h.htm">important element of pre-Christian European religions and medicine.</a> Along with other traditional religious practices, these were <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Juergen_Mueller4/publication/13509181_Love_Potions_and_the_Ointment_of_Witches_Historical_Aspects_of_the_Nightshade_Alkaloids/links/595b7ee0458515117741a0d2/Love-Potions-and-the-Ointment-of-Witches-Historical-Aspects-of-the-Nightshade-Alkaloids.pdf">characterized as evil witchcraft</a> during the middle ages and since. This has led to the amalgamation of what was likely a diverse religious history in Northern Europe into the simplified concept of “witchcraft.”

These practices were a combination of religion and traditional medicine. Many drugs derived from these “witches herbs” are <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a682509.html">still in use in modern medicine</a>. 

Much of what we know about these preparations is tainted by Christian witch trials. Surviving recipes and samples of flying ointments show they contained animal fats and herbs. These include <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/0015587X.1977.9716057?journalCode=rfol20">hallucinogenic and toxic nightshades</a> such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/mandragora/">mandrake</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/atropa-belladonna-belladonna/">deadly nightshade</a>, <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/hyoscyamus/">henbane</a>, and <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/datura/">datura</a>. The use of these herbs likely induced trance-like states in which users felt sensations of flight and transformation.

These preparations were applied to the skin as well as <a href="https://www.rcpe.ac.uk/sites/default/files/280306_a_lee.pdf">permeable mucous membranes including the vagina and anus</a>. This route of administration likely <a href="https://anesthesiology.pubs.asahq.org/article.aspx?articleid=1947026">contributed to stories of female witches flying on broomsticks</a>. The Catholic magisterium, sexual chastity, and patriarchy were likely <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/20411/20411-h/20411-h.htm">threatened by these practices</a>. These are some of the earliest uses of nightshades in Europe.
<h2>Henbane Makes Strong Pilsen Beer</h2>
Plants in Solanaceae were added to beer in place of hops in many traditional recipes. Henbane is called “bilsenkraut” in German. This is the root of the name “Pilsen,” the Czech city where Pilsners were created. In order to increase the apparent intoxication of beer, <a href="https://www.rcpe.ac.uk/sites/default/files/280306_a_lee.pdf">henbane was traditionally included in Pilsen beer</a>. Nightshades were a common beer additive.

This practice was eventually made illegal due to the high risk of fatal intoxication from henbane. The “Reinheitsgebot” laws were created in the early 16th century to <a href="http://www.private-brauereien.de/de/reinheitsgebot/was-ist-das-reinheitsgebot-von-1516/index.php">limit the ingredients</a> in beer to water, barley, and hops. This notably excludes yeast since its role was not yet known.
<h2>Hamlet’s Father Was Poisoned by Henbane</h2>
In Shakespeare's classic tragedy “Hamlet,” the bard writes in Hamlet’s father’s voice:

“Sleeping within my orchard,

My custom always of the afternoon,

Upon my secure hour thy uncle stole

With juice of cursed hebenon in a vial,

And in the porches of my ears did pour

The leperous distilment, whose effect

Holds such an enmity with blood of man...”

<a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140416-do-shakespeares-poisons-work">It has been conjectured that the “hebenon” Shakespeare mentions is an extract of henbane</a>. 

However, this work of fiction takes some liberties with the particulars of the poison’s effects.
<h2>Bacon’s Rebellion, Jamestown, 1676</h2>
In 1676, British soldiers were sent to the colony of Jamestown to prevent an uprising. They were not there long before many of the <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=WnaDEZwMAyMC&amp;pg=PA89#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false">soldiers ate a salad of datura leaves</a>. American historian Robert Beverly, JR. wrote: “they turned natural fools upon it for several days.” This event led to a common name for datura, Jimsonweed. This is a <a href="https://www.neatorama.com/2016/09/12/Jimsonweed-and-Jamestown/">mispronunciation of “Jamestown Weed.”</a>
<h2>Tobacco</h2>
Tobacco (<a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/nicotiana-tabacum/">Nicotiana spp.</a>) is another addictive and toxic herb in the Solanaceae family. Occurring natively in the Americas, this plant has a long history of use by native groups. It contains a complex mixture of bio-active chemicals. The most notable of these is the stimulant nicotine. Nicotine has become one of the most popular drugs in the world. As a result, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/fast_facts/index.htm">tobacco use now causes 7 million deaths per year</a> around the world.

Tobacco also produces harmala alkaloids. These compounds act as MAOIs, modifying the body's metabolism of neurotransmitters and drugs. This can contribute to the <a href="https://www.jneurosci.org/content/jneuro/25/38/8593.full.pdf">addictiveness of tobacco</a> <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2849634/">and other drugs</a>.
<h2>Europe Was Terrified of the Tomato</h2>
After Europeans discovered tomatoes in the new world, they were brought back to Europe. However, they quickly became known as “poison apples.” This was because nobles who ate them were becoming mysteriously ill. Since these plants were in the same family as many poisons, the tomato was blamed.

In reality, the culprit was lead. Royals often ate off pewter plates. When these were exposed to the acidity of tomatoes, they leached lead. This lead poisoning was <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/why-the-tomato-was-feared-in-europe-for-more-than-200-years-863735/">leading to the sickness and death associated with tomatoes</a>.
<h2>The Hottest Plants</h2>
Peppers are another group of edible nightshades. The link between deadly poisonous nightshades and tear-inducing peppers may seem natural. However, the primary spice causing chemical, capsaicin, is unrelated to the toxic tropane and solanine alkaloids. 

Capsaicin is found throughout the genus <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/capsicum/">Capsicum</a>, from which it gets its name. These spicy peppers are essential to many cultures' modern cuisines. However, they are only native to the “New Word.” Their powerful flavors have led them to be quickly adopted for many dishes.
<h2>A Model of A Plant</h2>
Today, Solanaceae still plays an essential role in our society. In addition to being the family of many extremely popular foods, these plants are popular amongst scientists. 

Tobacco and <a href="https://www.earth.com/earthpedia/plant/en/calibrachoa-parviflora/">petunias</a> are both used as “model organisms.” This means that many experiments are first tried on these plants. Because of their widespread cultivation, they are easily grown in repeatable ways. This makes them a good choice for answering basic questions about biology.

Why tomatoes, peppers and other nightshades have such an infamous reputation

Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, tobacco, mandrake, and datura are close relatives....

Soil transplants could be the key to building up disease resistance in vegetable crops, new research suggests. 

Bacterial wilt disease, which is caused by the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, can infect several plant species including tomato and potato crops. In China, Indonesia, and Africa, the disease had led to severe economic losses.

One mysterious aspect of the disease is that it can leave some plants perfectly healthy and infect others nearby. Like a patchy but aggressive rash, bacterial wilt doesn’t affect the whole crop but instead seems to pick and choose which plants to attack. 

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/">University of York</a> along with an international team of collaborators from China and the Netherlands wondered if this patchiness had anything to do with the soil and whether certain microbes were <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-microbes-communicate-battle/">protecting the plant from infection</a>. 

“Even though we have discovered that the pathogen is present everywhere in tomato fields, it is not capable of infecting all the plants,” said Dr. Ville Friman, a member of the research team. “We wanted to understand if this spatial variation could be explained by differences in soil bacterial communities.” 

The researchers used a novel experimental approach to analyze soil microbiomes and bacterial wilt plant resistance. 

By repeatedly sampling individual plants before and after disease symptoms started to manifest, the researchers were able to compare healthy and infected plant microbiomes. 

Rare pathogen-suppressing bacteria were present in the microbiomes of the healthy plants that resisted infection, showing potential pathways for improving disease resistance in crops worldwide. 

“We found that improved disease resistance could be transferred to the next plant generation along with the soil transplants analogous to faecal transplants used in medicine,” said Dr. Friman. “Our results show that it is important to focus not only the pathogen but also the naturally-occurring beneficial micro-organisms present in the rhizosphere.”

The researchers are working on testing different microbes to see which ones could be used to make a soil “probiotic” that adds healthy bacteria to the soil. 

The study was published in the journal Science Advances.

‘Sheep-eating plant’ appears in a flowerbed in the UK. A predatory plant recently spotted in Cornwall has a frightening way of feeding on animals by trapping them with sharp leaves and waiting for them to die. Puya chilensis, also known as the "sheep-eating plant," is native to the hillsides of the Chilean Andes and is an unusual sight in the UK.

The South American plant has razor-sharp hooked spines that are growing on its leaves from the ground up. The spines are thought to have evolved as a defense strategy, yet it seems that Puyas can use these spikes offensively as well. 

When <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/chilean-plant-murdered-sheep/">sheep</a>, goats, birds, and other animals get their fur hooked on the spines, they become trapped and starve to death. The decomposing bodies release nutrients into the soil surrounding Puya that support its growth. The smell of the decomposition often attracts other animals, which also become potential prey for Puya.

Truro county gardener Liam Shoesmith announced that he had spotted the plant growing in a flower bed in the city center while speaking on <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds">BBC Radio</a> Cornwall’s Garden Line.

"I was amazed when I saw it - it was a very, very impressive plant. I used to sell them in pots when I worked in a nursery so to see one flower was fantastic," said Shoesmith.

P. chilensis grows very slowly, ultimately reaching a height of about two meters. It often takes 20 years or more for Puya to flower, which is soon followed by death. Shoesmith told <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">MailOnline</a> that the plant was placed downtown deliberately by a Truro in Bloom group, and he suspects there are more Puyas living in the flower bed.

"It usually grows around the Andes where goats and sheep get their wool caught on its hooks," Shoesmith told <a href="https://www.cornwalllive.com/">Cornwall Live</a>. "They die and the nutrients seep into the ground allowing Puya to grow. It’s not quite like Little Shop of Horrors."

Scientists at the <a href="https://www.si.edu/">Smithsonian</a> have found that marsh plants have a surprising response to higher levels of <a href="http://www.earth.com/news/trees-carbon-dioxide/">carbon dioxide</a>. While it seems that plant stems would grow larger as more carbon dioxide is taken in, marsh plants actually produce more stems that are noticeably smaller.

"I don't think anybody expected this," said study lead author Professor Meng Lu. For years, scientists have observed that carbon dioxide bulks up the total biomass of marsh plants, so they naturally assumed that individual plants were also growing in size. "Everyone thought, okay, plants increased, biomass increased, so the height, width, all should increase. But that's not the case in a marsh," said Professor Lu.

At the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) in Maryland, Professor Lu worked on a tidal marsh called the "Global Change Research Wetland," which is home to one of the world's  longest-running field experiments on climate change. The scientists have been tracking how marsh plants will grow in a world with carbon dioxide levels that are nearly twice as high as they are today.

For 30 years, experts at the Smithsonian have harvested the plants in experimental chambers, taking annual measurements of their total biomass, stems, roots, and other key traits. Based on this data, Professor Lu realized that in the high-carbon dioxide chambers, the biomass of all the marsh sedges increased by 20 percent. More stems were growing in thicker clusters, but the individual stems had unexpectedly shrunk in size by 16 percent.

The researchers determined that this unusual growth pattern was the result of increasing CO2 without increasing the availability of  nitrogen. "If we get more carbon, we need more nitrogen to feed the plants," said Professor Lu. 

Without additional nitrogen, the extra carbon dioxide causes the plants to spread their roots farther below ground in an attempt to draw more nitrogen from the soil. Because most marsh plants are "clonal," which means they can reproduce by making copies of themselves, they naturally send up more stems above ground as their roots spread. 

In chambers where the experts raised both carbon dioxide and nitrogen, the "shrinking stems" effect vanished. The extra nitrogen enabled the plants to grow more stems and to make those stems larger.

"We knew that giving plants more nitrogen favors shoot growth over root growth, and vice-versa for carbon dioxide, but we never considered what this means for the numbers and sizes of plants," said study co-author Pat Megonigal. "We think that shrinking stems may be occurring in many other ecosystems with clonal plants."

Marsh plants exposed to higher CO2 levels also grow dense roots, which enables the marsh to build soil. As a marsh accumulates more soil and its elevation goes up, it becomes more resilient to sea level rise.

"Accelerating sea level rise is a threat to marshes worldwide," said Megonigal. "The possibility that marshes will be able to trap more sediment at the same time is reason for a bit of optimism."

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.



The full study was published in the <a href="https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S1617138125000780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Journal for Nature Conservation</a>.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsfoodscitech.4c00741" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ACS Food Science &amp; Technology</a>.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."

More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently.

Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. "Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
