Feeding a growing global population while preserving space for wildlife is one of agriculture’s toughest challenges. The debate has often been framed as a stark choice - either intensify farming to save land for nature or spread out production in more wildlife-friendly ways. 



But that either-or framing has oversimplified the problem and left policymakers with little clarity.



A new study takes a closer look at the evidence and asks a sharper question: which farming approach actually works best in practice to support biodiversity while keeping food production steady? The answer is far more complex than slogans suggest.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-challenging-either-or-farming">Challenging either-or farming</h2>



Study lead author Eva Augustiny at the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture in Switzerland (<a href="https://www.fibl.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FiBL</a>) and her team reviewed evidence from many landscapes and production systems.



The researchers assessed 57 studies and concluded that only 17 had the right ingredients to compare strategies head to head, yielding 27 apples-to-apples cases.



In those cases, 52 percent favored a mix of approaches, 41 percent favored land sparing, and seven percent favored land sharing, with the authors noting gaps in how biodiversity and yield were measured across the literature. That tally comes from the team’s peer-reviewed paper&nbsp;



"The empirical basis is thus sparse and does not support statements claiming that, in general, either land sharing or land sparing strategies are unequivocally better," said Augustiny.



Many studies focused on a narrow slice of life. Birds dominated the sample, often <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ozone-pollution-is-stunting-tropical-forest-growth/">tropical forest</a> birds, while soil organisms and microbes were barely covered. 



Agricultural performance focused on yield, while profitability, stability, and key services like pollination and pest control were rarely tracked.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farms-use-land-differently">Farms use land differently</h2>



In this debate, land sharing means lower-intensity farming across wider areas with habitat elements built into fields and pastures. Farmers may keep hedgerows, ponds, tree belts, or flower strips and use more wildlife-friendly practices.



<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farming-for-wildlife-how-traditional-practices-can-protect-nature/">Land sparing</a> means concentrating production on smaller, higher yielding areas and setting aside larger, undisturbed spaces elsewhere for nature. The core idea is to meet food demand on less land and leave more intact habitat.



The modern framing grew from a 2005 theoretical model that linked species responses to farm yields and area needs. That model helped structure later field tests, but it simplified messy realities on the ground.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-biodiversity-complicates-the-picture">Biodiversity complicates the picture</h2>



Species differ. Forest-dependent birds often need large, continuous habitat and do poorly in patchy mosaics. 



A European population-level study found that simple sparing outperformed sharing for many species, while a three-compartment model that paired spared habitat with some low-yield farmland improved outcomes further.



Climate, farm size, and the mobility of organisms also tilt the balance. Mobile pollinators and predators can thrive in mixed farm landscapes, while less mobile amphibians, reptiles, or cavity-nesting mammals may require the security of protected areas.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-economics-and-soil-matter">Economics and soil matter</h2>



Economics and policy strongly influence results. A cross-country analysis of yield gains and land use showed that intensifying production does not automatically free land for nature - especially where subsidies or market demand drive expansion.



Soil quality sets boundaries that short-term yield gains often obscure. A global review documented how erosion, compaction, and other forms of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/land-degradation-severely-threatens-planetary-boundaries/">degradation</a> undermine productivity over time and raise the risk that new land will be cleared. 



As Rhys Green of the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Cambridge</a> noted in 2005, increasing yield could reduce farmland needs, but demand growth and rebound effects can erase those gains. Even the theory behind sparing warned against oversimplification.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-farms-thrive-when-diversified">Farms thrive when diversified</h2>



Flower strips, hedgerows, and diversified rotations can lift biodiversity and stabilize services on farms. 



A large second-order meta-analysis showed that agricultural diversification supports <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/robotic-insects-may-be-the-future-of-farming-and-plant-pollination/">pollination</a>, natural pest control, nutrient cycling, soil fertility, and water regulation without sacrificing overall yields.



Protected areas still matter. Some species simply cannot persist in farmland, no matter how friendly the practices, so set-asides remain a nonnegotiable part of the picture.



Connectivity helps both sides. Corridors and stepping stones reduce isolation of protected patches, while on farm habitat elements keep beneficial organisms moving through fields.



Local food system choices can relieve pressure too. Less waste and smarter use of crops for food rather than feed reduce the acreage needed to meet diets, which strengthens the case for keeping more land wild.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-land-policies-must-stay-local">Land policies must stay local</h2>



It's time to stop asking which side wins in general. The better question is which mix of spared land and shared land fits a specific place, given its species, soils, climate, and markets.



Measure more than yield. Track profitability, stability over years, and the biodiversity based services that keep farms productive in the long run. 



Tie intensification to real conservation. Sparing only works if the land that is supposedly saved is actually protected, restored, and connected.



Invest in data where it is thin. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gene-edited-wheat-turns-soil-microbes-into-fertilizer/">Soil microbes</a>, fungi, and belowground communities underpin fertility and resilience yet are missing from most studies.



Remember where this started. The early model framed a useful thought experiment, but today’s decisions need local evidence, clear goals, and policies that lock in the benefits.

Dinosaurs may have stopped and smelled the roses as far back as the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/flowers-earth/">mid-Cretaceous period, </a>according to a new study. 

Flowers emit fragrances that are often used in perfumes and essential oils and we as humans have enjoyed these scents throughout our history. 

Now, a new study conducted by an entomologist from <a href="https://oregonstate.edu/">Oregon State University</a> shows that before flowers used colorful petals to attract pollinators they used scents, and these attractive scents may have been appealing to dinosaurs just as they are to humans today. 

George Poinar, an entomologist, and his son Greg, a fragrance collector, examined the tissues of extinct Cretaceous flowers encased in amber and found that the flowers were using the same chemical compounds to attract pollinators 100 million years ago that they do now. 

“I bet some of the dinosaurs could have detected the scents of these early flowers,” said Poinar. “In fact, floral essences from these early flowers could even have attracted these giant reptiles.”

Today, flowers use both scent and color to attract pollinators but during the time of the dinosaurs, the flowers had to rely on their scents alone to ensure that the stigma of the plant was fertilized. 

Because fossilized flowers don’t smell, the researchers instead analyzed the tissues of extinct flowers to see how tissues responsible for scents had evolved over time. 

Poinar and his son discovered that the scent tissues of ancient Cretaceous flowers, some of which had been trapped in amber for 20 to 30 million years, were structurally similar to the scent tissues of modern flowers. 

What's more, some of the fossil flowers were in the process of emitting scents that were particularly attractive to bees. 

“It's obvious flowers were producing scents to make themselves more attractive to pollinators long before humans began using perfumes to make themselves more appealing to other humans,” said Poinar.

The results of the study help provide insight into early plant life and that given the fact that flowers were using scents millions of years ago, it’s very likely that dinosaurs were just as enamored of flowers as we are today.

New research by scientists at the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">University of California Davis</a> has found that lichen communities, which are essential to life across conifer forests, are not always returning after wildfires. According to the study, lichen have still not recovered in some western regions many years after the land was scorched by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mendocino-complex-fire-largest/">fires</a>.

Lichen forms leaf-like layers over tree bark and rocks, providing food and critical resources for deer, birds, and many other species. Lichen also makes an important contribution to the nutrient cycle, as it helps to facilitate nitrogen fixation in the soil.

Study lead author Jesse Miller is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at UC Davis.


“Lichen are beautiful, ecologically important, are all around us and tell us important things about the environment,” said Miller. “But even if you don't notice lichens, you would notice the consequences in ecosystems when they are lost.”

The researchers sampled lichen communities in about 100 study sites across the Sierra Nevada region of California. Between four and 16 years prior to the research, wildfires had burned in and around the plots with different levels of severity.

Lichen communities were found to be largely unaffected by low-severity fires, which indicates that natural wildfires as well as prescribed burns do not sacrifice lichen diversity.

On the other hand, sites where wildfires had been more intense were found to have significantly less lichen diversity or abundance. In burned areas where most of the trees had died, lichen were nearly all gone and had not yet returned in as many as 16 years.

The researchers explained that the recovery of lichen is probably limited by the loss of tree canopy after the fire. The dry microclimate that is left behind after a fire is not conducive to lichen growth. Therefore, lichen communities will not likely return across burned regions of the Sierra Nevada forests until mature trees reappear and the forest canopy is restored.

"If the species could keep pace with the rate of climate change, the effects of fire might not be so bad,” said Miller. “But the concern is they might not. These fires happen so quickly and in such a large area, they could cause species ranges to contract faster than they are expanding.”

The trend of more intense fires and increasingly dry forests could cause irreparable harm to lichen diversity, which would impact nutrient cycling and food-chain interactions across forest ecosystems.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/13652486">Global Change Biology</a>.

Lichen communities destroyed by wildfires are not returning

New research by scientists at the University of California Davis...

A new study from the <a href="https://www.ornl.gov/">Oak Ridge National Laboratory</a> has found that hotter temperatures cause peatland plants to develop earlier and grow for longer periods of time. The findings may ultimately improve the accuracy of global forest models.

The researchers found that warmer weather accelerated spring greening among mature trees, shrubs, and mosses. Hotter temperatures also delayed color changes in the fall.


“This is the first time we've been able to confirm the response of vegetation to this range of temperatures, which exceed what can be found in the historical record,” explained study co-author Andrew Richardson of <a href="https://nau.edu/">Northern Arizona University</a>. “We did not foresee the major role that temperature plays in extending plant activity in the fall.”


The analysis was based on the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) study, which is a unique ecosystem experiment developed by the <a href="https://www.energy.gov/">Department of Energy</a>. The greenness of plants was measured over three years using direct observations and digital repeat photography. 

The study revealed that elevated temperatures prompted plant activity - even as exposure to sunlight decreased in the fall. Plants in the warmest study regions, which were heated by 16.2 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient temperatures, remained green and functional up to six weeks longer. 

The warmest vegetation also lost its protection against cold earlier in the spring, leaving plants vulnerable to leaf and stem damage in the event of a frost.

“SPRUCE has given us the opportunity to achieve a fair glimpse of alternative environmental futures that can't be observed through historical records," said SPRUCE coordinator and study co-author Paul Hanson.

The extension of the growing season could greatly affect the carbon cycle, and further research will be needed to establish how this phenomenon may influence <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rice-lose-nutritional-value-co2/">carbon dioxide</a> emissions.

“These SPRUCE results demonstrate the importance of direct experiments for expanding our understanding of peatland carbon cycling processes,” said Hanson.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/nature/">Nature</a>.

Rising temperatures extend the growing season for some plants

A new study from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory has...

For years now, conservationists in Africa have been promoting the use of large dogs like Anatolian Shepherds by goat herders and shepherds to keep cheetahs at bay without killing the cats.  In a lot of ways, the dogs are a success helping mitigate the often fraught tension between agriculture and wild predators. According to a progress report from <a href="https://cheetah.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/CCF.Annual.Report.2017_public_web.pdf">Cheetah Conservation Fund</a>, that organization alone has placed 589 livestock guarding dogs in Namibia and elsewhere in Africa.  As of December 2017, Cheetah Conservation Fund reported that 174 of the dogs they’ve placed are still working dogs.      

In his book Monster of God, author David Quammen also visited areas in Eastern Europe where dogs defend livestock from brown bears. <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/newswires/news/business/imported-guard-dogs-deployed-part-wolf-sheep-study-article-1.3867011">New York Daily News</a> also reported this year on studies in the western U.S. to gauge possible success using guard dogs to protect livestock from wolves as well as grizzlies.  The project is still young and the overall success in terms of livestock survival and reducing friction between ranchers and wolves is still uncertain. 

When it comes to conflict between agriculture and wildlife it’s not just predators like wolves, cheetahs and bears killing livestock.  Birds are often the unwanted pilferers of agricultural products. According to a <a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/nwrc/publications/13pubs/anderson132.pdf">USDA</a> study, crop damage from birds costs $104 per hectare of cherries in Oregon to $7267 per hectare of Washington Honeycrisp apples.  The 2013 USDA study found that overall bird damage over five states and five different crops surveyed was estimated to be $189 million

Clearly birds can do enormous amounts of damage to crops and it costs.  The costs are either taken on by the farmer or perhaps passed down to consumers in the grocery store.  Traditionally farmers may have turned to guns or scarecrows to keep birds at bay but recently new innovative ideas have turned up.  Flagging tape is tied to and around crops in an effort to scare birds away, loud noises are sometimes played. A company called <a href="http://www.birdgard.com/bird-control-for-agriculture/">Bird Gard</a> has an automated system that plays randomized noises to scare birds away.  Strangely another company, <a href="https://birdcontrolgroup.com/agriculture/">Bird Control Group</a> produces lasers designed to scare birds away, saying that birds perceive a flash of laser light as an oncoming predator and flee.  Basically a motion sensor detects birds and triggers a harmless laser beam to be fired at the bird, scaring it away from valuable crops.  

Looking at the amount of different products designed to scare birds away from crops, it’s hard to imagine that any of them work all the time.  If one product was 100 percent effective, it seems like it would dominate the market and quickly be adopted universally by farmers. 

One newer way to fight bird depredation of orchards and other agriculture is to make alliances with natural predators.  <a href="https://www.ehn.org/back-to-basics-tackling-farm-pests-with-predator-birds-2546940909.html">Environmental Health News</a> reported that farmers in the US have added nest boxes to their properties to encourage American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) to nest near farms, orchards and vineyards.  American Kestrels are natural predators to song birds that sometimes devastate crops.  Kestrels are America’s smallest and most common falcon; I’ve seen them sitting on powerlines along highways driving across Nebraska, little more than predatory robins and almost as common.  Kestrel numbers have declined in recent years though and any help they can get from farmers is a needed benefit. When the New Zealand Falcon was reintroduced to areas with vineyards, scientists found that there was a 95% reduction of grape loss compared to vineyards without falcons.

There are even companies that deal in using raptors to control bird crop destruction.  <a href="http://www.falconforce.com/raptors.html">Falcon Force</a> is one such company that uses falconry to protect cherries and other crops from hungry birds.

Other birds can benefit crops as well.  One study showed that luring Great Tits (Parus major), a type of bird into an orchard with nest boxes, decreased caterpillar damage to apples by 50%.  Research with bluebirds in California vineyards has shown promise in reducing leaf eating insects simply by introducing nest boxes.  

The ways in which animals help or have helped people in agriculture are numerous.  Donkeys are good at keeping coyotes and wolves away from any threatened livestock like goats and sheep.  According to an article from <a href="https://www.grit.com/animals/livestock/livestock-guardians-ze0z1603zcbru">Grit</a>:

“In one survey, 59 percent of Texas producers who use guardian donkeys rated them as good or fair for deterring coyote predation and another 20 percent deemed them to be excellent or good.”  

Llamas have also been used to deter predators from smaller herd animals.  Llamas can be vicious, kicking, biting and spitting and predators. Both llamas and donkeys naturally dislike canid predators in particular and will often rush to attack them.  <a href="https://www.grit.com/animals/livestock/livestock-guardians-ze0z1603zcbru">Grit</a> says this about using llamas as livestock guardians: 

“Iowa State University polled 145 sheep producers in five western states to determine the effectiveness of llamas for reducing dog and coyote predation. The producers reported losing an average of 21 percent of their ewes and lambs each year prior to adding llama guardians and only 7 percent after guardian llamas joined their flocks. Eighty percent rated their llamas effective or very effective for guarding sheep.”

Of course plant agriculture still has a few beneficial animals I haven’t yet mentioned: insects.  Predatory insects often naturally kill and consume insects consuming plant crops. Lady bugs (family Coccinellidae) are the most well-known of beneficial insects.  Lady bugs are known for eating aphids and other crop pests that can destroy plants. 

There are many other insects (and other arthropods) that are beneficial for farming and gardening as well.  Ground Beetles prey on slugs, caterpillars, and potato beetles. Aphid midges hunt aphids. Spiders will prey on most insects, detrimental or beneficial.  Braconid wasps parasitize caterpillars that may munch on plants. 

Much of the reason the benefit of these insects isn’t realized in agriculture is widespread pesticide usage.  When an ecological balance is reached in a farm or garden, the nuisance insects are controlled to a certain level by their natural predators.  The key to attracting insects such as these (and spiders) is finding the plants they like and planting them alongside crop plants. Diversity helps too, instead of large monoculture farms, those with a multitude of different crops growing together mimic nature better and are more likely to bring in helpful arthropods.  

In his fantastic book The One-Straw Revolution, experimental farmer, Masanobu Fukuok tells of the benefit of spiders to his crops when he didn’t use pesticides:

“I had not used insecticide.  Upon investigating the habitat, the balance between insects and their natural enemies, the rate of spider propagation and so on, the leaf-hoppers were found to be just as scarce in my fields as in the Center’s fields, which are sprayed countless times with a variety of deadly chemicals.”

Beyond protection from predation or herbivory, animals can do a lot.  Butterflies, bees and other insects pollinate crops. Hummingbirds even can be important pollinators.  As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/bat-friendly-tequila-species-recovery/">we reported</a>, farmers growing agave for tequila production have started to recognize the importance of lesser long-nosed bats for pollinating.  

The importance of other organisms in raising our own food is part of an ancient system.  We are part of an interconnected whole, a global ecosystem. The more natural we can leave our food systems, the less work for us.  The importance for us is for food but also to remind us that we are still but a part of a greater natural order.

An intervention with psychedelic mushrooms may help some people overcome their tobacco addiction, according to a new study. The research was focused on identifying the underlying mechanism that makes it so difficult to quit smoking.

“Cigarette smoking is today a huge public health scourge and there are no effective reliable treatments,” explained study co-author Tehseen Noorani of <a href="https://www.jhsph.edu/">Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health</a>.

“An open-label pilot study had impressive results in the treatment of cigarette smoking addiction with psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, and we wanted to understand better how it worked - commonly referred to as the ‘mechanisms of change.’ One way to do this is to draw upon participants’ experiences, to identify themes in perceived mechanisms of change.” 

The research was focused on 12 individuals who had previously participated in psilocybin-assisted smoking cessation. The participants had received two or three  treatments of psilocybin, which is the active compound found in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/magic-mushrooms-depression-emotions/">magic mushrooms</a>, and had also engaged in cognitive behavior therapy.

For the current study, the individuals were interviewed approximately 30 months after the psilocybin sessions.

Overall, nine of the study participants had successfully quit smoking in the time since treatment, while two others were not successful in quitting and one person had cut back to only social smoking.

“Participants reported that psilocybin sessions led to psychological insights, experiences of interconnectedness, feelings of awe and curiosity and reduced withdrawal symptoms, all of which helped them successfully quit smoking,” Noorani told <a href="https://www.psypost.org/">PsyPost</a>.

“Smoking was one of the least important consequences of study involvement - participants reported many other sustained improvements in their lives, including enhanced aesthetic appreciation, openness to experience and engagement in the community.”

Noorani explained that, for psychedelics-assisted therapy to be feasible, researchers must gain an understanding of how to streamline a treatment system that it is consistently safe and effective. 

“Personally, I was really excited by the use of psychedelics, which can occasion deeply meaningful experiences, for disrupting something as notoriously stubborn as cigarette addiction,” said Noorani.

“I was also interested in the challenge of parsing out the complexity of the research protocol itself - including substantial levels of care, a deep concern by researchers and the clinical team in the lives of participants, extended follow-on support and the expectations that come from the reputation of Johns Hopkins, which is an elite research institution.”

The study is published in the <a href="http://journals.sagepub.com/loi/jop">Journal of Psychopharmacology</a>.

Psychedelic mushrooms may help smokers kick the habit

Could some Asian mushrooms help doctors fight cancer? Four species have shown natural chemical compounds that may have anti-tumor properties, researchers say, and they want to study them further.

"In ancient China, mushrooms were considered as the most effective treatment for the various types of tumors. Contemporary fungotherapy represents a promising field for scientific research,” Dr. Vladimir Katanaev, head of <a href="https://www.dvfu.ru/en/">Far East Federal University</a>’s natural pharmacology program, said in a news release.

An international team from FEFU, the <a href="https://www.unil.ch/central/en/home.html">University of Lausanne</a> and the <a href="http://old.febras.ru/institutes_.html">Russian Academy of Sciences’ Far Eastern Branch</a> analyzed four species of Asian mushroom, listing the potential tumors that could be treated by natural compounds, including sarcoma, stomach and liver cancers, and leukemia. The goal is to guide future research of the mushrooms to determine whether they can be used to treat these cancers.

The four Asian mushrooms they selected have been used in folk medicine for centuries, the researchers said. Because of their long use, their chemical properties have been studied and described in existing research, the scientists said, giving new research a base to work from.

About 90 percent of fungi have never been studied to see if they have anti-tumor or antibacterial properties, co-author Dr. Alexander Kagansky of FEFU said.

“Over the past 60 years, the rate of studies focusing on fungi increased exponentially, but in many areas of research mushrooms as potential source for beneficial products are still ignored,” the team wrote in their study.

Some of the studies that have focused on Asian mushrooms and their anti-cancer properties have ignored the effects chemical compounds might have on healthy cells, they added.

“In general, there has been a strong progress in the field of medicinal mushroom research in terms of anticancer drug development, but this work continues and much more progress still awaits us, especially in the fields of molecular targets of the medicinal mushrooms and the complex synergistic interplay of their different components,” they wrote.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.18632/oncotarget.25660">Oncotarget</a>.

The sparkling white sand of Florida’s southwestern beaches aren’t dotted with sunbathers this week. Instead, they’re strewn with the corpses of dead marine creatures, victims of a red tide.

While the toxic algae blooms known as “red tides” are common off the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, the <a href="https://floridadep.gov/">Florida Department of Environmental Protection</a> is calling the current event the worst in a decade. The state’s governor has declared a state of emergency.

At least 400 sea turtles have died, Newsweek is reporting. Several news outlets reported that a dead manatee was also recovered off the Florida coast, and at least one biologist found evidence the red tide may have killed a whale shark. Tissue taken from the whale shark’s organs and muscles tested positive for brevetoxin, a neurotoxin created by the algae.

“This whale shark was definitely exposed to the bloom, and we know brevetoxins (are deadly),” spokeswoman Kelly Richmond of the <a href="http://myfwc.com/">Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission</a> told the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a>.

While biologists are still working to determine the cause of death, if the algae bloom did play a role, it would be the first known incident in which a whale shark has been killed by a bloom.

About 100 miles of the Florida shore have been affected, and the red tide looks like a persistent one. The algae bloom – which gets its name because the microscopic algae often turn water red – has already lasted since November of last year, and could stretch into 2019, some scientists are saying.

“Many people will tell you that this is the worst they have ever seen,” Jacylin Bevis, a reporter with the NBC affiliate in Fort Myers, Florida, told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/">NBC News</a>. “It’s our entire south Florida coastline with the red tide and then with the blue-green algae on the rivers and canals."

Most algae blooms are beneficial to the ocean, providing a source of food for marine creatures. Red tides, on the other hand, produce toxins that can harm or kill sea life.

Usually, cold spells break up or kill off some of the algae, but not this time. The red tide is going strong – and has been joined by toxic blue-green algae invading Lake Okeechobee, and several of the state’s rivers and canals, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/">Newsweek</a> said.

More than a dozen people have gone to the emergency room after exposure to the blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria.

Imagine an albino. What do you think of? Most people probably envision a white mouse, with pink eyes. Or perhaps a white rabbit. Because albinism occurs in humans as well, some might conjure up images of fashion models like <a href="https://www.instagram.com/shaundross/?hl=en">Shaun Ross</a>, a black man with albinism who has challenged beauty standards in the modern era. Perhaps more pressingly, other still might think of the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20170425-the-silent-killer-of-africas-albinos">albino people in Africa who are harassed and killed</a> because their body parts are believed to have magical significance. 

Here’s the thing though: albinism is not a truly scientific term. It’s a colloquial term for creatures lacking pigment. The word albino is derived from the Portuguese for “little white one.” Albo means “white” and the diminutive suffix -ino means “little.” As such, it applies equally to animals and plants that lack color. 

When animals lack color, it is due to an absence of melanin in their skin and hair. When plants lack color, it is due to the absence of chlorophyll. While the absence of melanin may have impacts on the survival of animals because their white coloration makes them more conspicuous to predators and more susceptible to conditions such as skin cancer, albino animals are capable of surviving and are sporadically observed in the wild. (Many white animals seen in the wild are actually leucistic; they lack pigment in many cell types but are usually discernible by normally colored eyes.) 

Albino plants, lacking the chlorophyll they need to manufacture food, typically die as seedlings after the energy stored in the seed is used up. Plants with variegated green-and-white foliage or with abnormally white flowers are not considered albino; though their coloration may be atypical for a given species, these plants are nonetheless able to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/photosynthesis-plants-started/">photosynthesize</a> normally. 

In rare cases, albino plants are able to survive. In lab settings, they can be grown to relatively large sizes using a growing medium that allows them to absorb the nutrients they would normally produce in their leaves through their roots, which has been <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/2435069?seq=2#page_scan_tab_contents">known since this early 20th century</a>. 

Albinism is relatively common in plants grown through in the lab through <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=9rGM9F2sGdYC&amp;pg=PA55&amp;dq=microspore+embryo+induced+by&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjigbyV3MjcAhUL5oMKHdy_AbwQ6AEILjAB#v=onepage&amp;q=microspore%20embryo%20induced%20by&amp;f=false">androgenic microspore embryogenesis</a>, a process through which immature male gametes are treated with heat, gamma radiation, colchicine, or ethanol and induced to form embryos without the presence of a matching female gamete. This process is often used in the development of crops and ornamental plants such as daylilies in order to cut down on the time it takes to reproduce desirable traits. No need to mate the plant and wait for it to form seeds, many of which will not exhibit the desired trait, when the trait can be isolated by using the gamete of the plant exhibiting that trait.

It is thought that the cause of the high incidence of albino seedlings grown from such treated gametes is due to interference in plastid development. In healthy plants, <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9905/">protoplastids mature into chloroplasts</a>, which power photosynthesis. Those protoplastids do not properly mature in albinos. The appearance of albinos is usually viewed as a bad thing in this context: albino crops and ornamentals are not viable outside of a lab setting and are thus useless.

Interestingly, in one of the few widespread instances of albinism in plants in the wild, it may actually be an adaptive mechanism. Coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), native to California and Oregon, reproduce by both seeds and suckering, in which shoots are sent out from the base of the tree and grow into trees themselves. Sometimes, these suckers grow into trees partially or totally lacking green pigmentation in the needles. Some 400 of these unusual trees are known; the first was discovered in 1866. Though on the surface they appear to be independent organisms, in fact, they retain connections to the parent plant and can even exchange nutrients. Because of this, suckers that grow into trees with albino needles can actually reach adulthood (albeit in stunted form). Though they are not themselves able to photosynthesize, they are supplied with the necessary sugars by the parent plant. 

While some have theorized that these ghostly redwoods are parasitic anomalies, little more than botanical leeches who fail to launch and spend their lives sponging off their parents, new research has suggested that they in fact assist the parent plant by absorbing heavy metals and other toxins. There is a higher incidence in areas known to have soils contaminated by heavy metals and albino redwoods have been shown to contain much higher rates of such metals as nickel, cadmium, and copper than surrounding, normally pigmented, trees. 

Because redwoods have hexaploid genomes—meaning that they have six copies of their genetic code as opposed to the two in human genomes—they have a much greater chance of exhibiting mutations. Metals can interfere with normal photosynthetic processes and so it has been speculated in a <a href="https://chimeraredwoods.com/images/RedwoodSymposium.jpeg">University of Colorado study</a> that these white trees in fact serve as livers to their healthy brethren, sequestering metals in their tissues, where they cannot harm their photosynthesizing parents. This research is somewhat speculative at this point, but if proven, may have implications for other species of plant as well. Balsam poplar, aspen, birch, and white spruce, as well herbaceous milkweed plants, all occasionally produce white-leaved shoots as well.

The phenomenon also occurs in some species of mycoheterotrophic plants—which augment their photosynthetic habits with nutrients produced through a symbiotic relationship with root fungi. Sometimes, <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/mec.14021">plants will spontaneously convert to albinism</a> and survive solely on the nutrients produced by this relationship.

While you won’t find true albino plants haunting the aisles of your local gardening center, one breeder has developed a <a href="https://chimeraredwoods.com/future-store/item/38-store">mosaic redwood</a>, with some white needles and some green needles, that may soon be available. You could soon be host to a botanical ghost of your own.

An international team of scientists led by the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> has discovered how plants adjust their circadian clocks to day and night cycles in order to stay aligned with their surrounding environment. According to the study, plants regulate their circadian rhythms by continuously measuring the amount of sugars in their cells.


Animals, plants, bacteria, and fungi can approximate the time of day through circadian rhythms. For most living things, cues from the circadian cycle guide physical, mental, and behavioral changes.

It is critical for scientists to understand how these circadian systems work for insights into both agriculture and medicine. In the past, for example, changes in circadian rhythms have contributed to domestication of crops.

The current study has revealed that, when sugars made from photosynthesis are detected, the plant makes the necessary changes in energy provision throughout the day.

“Our findings show the first mechanism in plants that shifts the circadian rhythm backwards or forwards to synchronise it with the environment,” said study author Dr. Antony Dodd. “The plant continuously measures the amount of sugar in the cells and uses this information to make the required adjustments.”


Plants must correctly synchronize their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/circadian-rhythm-light-melatonin/">circadian rhythms</a> with the timing of day and night so that they can optimize energy and performance. Circadian rhythms control the time when plants grow and allow plants to conserve energy so that they have enough to last throughout the night.

Circadian rhythms also keep plants informed of changes in the seasons, which is particularly important to crops.

Dr. Dodd explained that “the discovery of a mechanism that synchronizes the plant body clock with the time in the environment has identified a new process that could be exploited in future to improve crop performance.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

Plants can tell the time of day by measuring their sugar levels

An international team of scientists led by the University of...

A study led by the <a href="https://www.unige.ch/en/university/">University of Geneva</a> (UNIGE) has identified the key elements that control the rapid formation of functional chloroplasts within plant seeds. The researchers describe the mechanism that supports the transition to autonomous growth after seed germination is initiated.

During the process of germination, the embryo within a seed must develop into a young seedling capable of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/photosynthesis-plants-started/">photosynthesis</a> in less than 48 hours.

“This is a critical stage in the life of a plant, which is closely regulated, notably by the growth hormone gibberellic acid (GA). The production of this hormone is repressed when external conditions are unfavorable,”  said study co-author Professor Luis Lopez-Molina.


The embryo only has access to a limited amount of nutrients reserved within the seed, which makes the development of functional chloroplasts that can produce sugars essential for survival.

“Thousands of different proteins must be imported into the developing chloroplasts, and this process can only take place in the presence of a protein called TOC159. If it is lacking, the plant will be depleted in chloroplasts and will remain albino,” explained study co-author Felix Kessler.


The team investigated how the seed decides whether to keep the embryo protected or to allow seed germination.


“We have discovered that, as long as GA is suppressed, a mechanism is set up, which ensures that TOC159 proteins are transported to the cellular waste bin in order to be degraded,” said study first author Venkatasalam Shanmugabalaji.

On the other hand, GA levels rise in the seed as external conditions become favorable. The team discovered that high concentrations of this hormone indirectly block the degradation of TOC159 proteins. These proteins are inserted into the membrane of proplastids and allow for the successful import of photosynthetic proteins.

The high-performance system recognized by the team not only enables the successful transition from a dependent embryo to autonomous development, but also contributes to the survival of the seedling in an inhospitable environment.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

When a seed turns into a plant, it has under two days to survive

The growth of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/gas-detecting-plants-health-monitors/">plants</a> is a fascinating process that – despite all we know about it – scientists are still researching intensively to this day. One thing about plant growth that has puzzled scientists is the process of root cap replacement. The root cap protects the fragile tip of the root as a plant grows, and is replaced every few hours when the old cap is lost and a new one replaces it. 

But scientists have wanted to know how the cells at the tip know when to die, and how cells further back know that it’s time to divide and form a new layer? These questions can now be (partially) answered, thanks to new research published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/nplants/">Nature Plants</a>.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.uio.no/english/">University of Oslo</a> and the <a href="https://ist.ac.at/">Institute of Science and Technology Austria</a> (IST Austria) have observed for the first time regular cycles of root tip loss and regrowth in real time. In their work, they uncovered the signal and receptor that coordinate this process.

The researchers discovered the signal and receptor that facilitate communication at the root tip. Cells in the root cap secrete the signal peptide IDL1, which diffuses through the root tip. The peptide IDL attaches to the receptor protein HSL2 on the cells at the root apical meristem, which divide to form a new root cap. Through this, the outer root cap cells are shed and the inner cells that divide to replace them are able to communicate.

Root caps are lost at a rate of about one every 18 hours. “Because root cap loss and replacement is slow, you cannot observe it under a normal microscope set-up,” says Jiri Friml of IST Austria. To compensate for this, his group used a laser scanning microscope flipped on its side, which is a set-up they previously developed and led to them producing the winning video in last year’s “Nikon Small World in Motion Competition.”

With this microscope set-up, they could observe root growth over three days and see the periodicity of root cap peeling and cell death. “Our vertical microscope set-up and automatic tracking allowed us to observe how root caps are lost in natural conditions,” says Friml. “These tools enabled us to see how root cap loss actually happens and how the cells further back divide.”

This discovery not only shows the complexities of the inner working of plants, but it also shows that collaboration and the utilization of ingenuity within science can help us learn more about the world around us.

A new study from the <a href="http://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> has revealed that artificial lighting at night has an unexpected influence on plants and animals. Night-time lighting from sources such as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/led-lights-last-longer-but-some-shades-are-harmful-to-wildlife/">streetlights</a> was found to promote complex changes in the feeding behavior of exposed insects.

Previous studies have shown that artificial lighting impacts a wide variety of species, including moths and bats, but it has been unclear how food webs were affected.

The investigation was focused on communities of plants, aphids, and parasitoid wasps in the UK. The research team established that the impacts of the artificial nighttime lights varied depending on the brightness of the light.

At lower levels of light, such as the amount of light generated by a nearby town, the parasitoid wasps had a hunting advantage and killed twice as many aphids. With brighter levels of light, however, the wasps became distracted and flew away from the aphids.

The researchers explained that this phenomenon could have a widespread impact on the way that different kinds of species interact, especially considering that many places all over the world have artificial night lighting including 88 percent of Europe.

“We might have expected that any effect of artificial light would increase with the brightness of the light - but that isn't what happened,” said study co-author Dr. Dirk Sanders. “Under low light these wasps became far more efficient hunters, leading to a reduction in the number of aphids, but brighter lighting made them more and more distracted.”


“This shows that even low lighting - the most common level of light pollution - can have a major impact. It also demonstrates the complex ways lighting affects ecosystems.”


Study lead author Professor Kevin Gaston said, “The potential for similar effects to occur in many different ecosystems is huge.”


The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>.

Artificial night lighting impacts a wide range of species

On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.



This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-meet-archaeopteris-the-first-modern-tree">Meet Archaeopteris: the first modern tree</h2>



The star of this ancient forest is Archaeopteris – not to be confused with the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx. This tree was far older and more revolutionary.



William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>

A new long-term study in Monkton, Vermont, reveals that wildlife tunnels significantly reduce amphibian road mortality during seasonal migrations. 



Frogs and salamanders often cross roads to reach breeding ponds each spring, but many are killed by vehicles. 



Researchers from the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Vermont</a>, in collaboration with local citizens and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources, installed two underpass tunnels in 2015. 



Over a 12-year monitoring period, they observed an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths, and up to 94% for non-climbing species like salamanders. 



The study used a before-after-control-impact design and documented more than 5,200 amphibians, highlighting the tunnels’ effectiveness even in nearby buffer zones.



Funded at $342,397 - far cheaper than wildlife crossings for large mammals - the project showcased the power of community-led conservation.



Local groups initiated the effort after observing mass amphibian deaths. Wildlife cameras later captured over 2,200 amphibians using a tunnel in just one spring, along with other species like raccoons and bobcats, indicating wider ecosystem benefits.



This marks the first peer-reviewed, long-term data set in the northeastern U.S. confirming amphibian-specific underpasses work. 



The study urges transportation departments to incorporate these designs into road planning and highlights how community action, thoughtful infrastructure, and persistence can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> explores the ability of salt to transform the way that foods and beverages taste. Salt is known to cover up undesirable flavors, such as bitterness in coffee or beer, but how exactly does sodium chloride change the taste of other compounds?



One previous study showed that, not only does salt suppress bitterness, but also enhances sweetness and sourness. Another study revealed that bitterness reduction by salt seems to be happening at the tongue receptor level as well as in the brain.&nbsp;



While it is known that salt taste is mediated by the presence of sodium channels in the form of taste buds, experts believe that there is also an unknown receptor responsible for how we taste salt that has not yet been identified.&nbsp;

'The weather of Santiago resembles the Mediterranean climate with dry and warm summers with temperatures reaching up to 35°C (from October to March) and cool and humid winters that can drop to 0°C (from April to September)."



"The city lies in the centre of the country’s central valley around 80 km from the Pacific Ocean to the west and borders Argentina to the east. A tiny part of Argentina is visible in the top-right corner of the image where the mountain crest of the Andes Mountains acts as a divider between the two countries," says ESA.

Astronomers at <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> have created an interactive map of the universe, including the actual position and real colors of 200,000 galaxies. The map allows the public to access data that was previously only available to scientists.



The map was developed using data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For over two decades, a telescope in New Mexico was aimed at slightly different locations to capture the night sky.&nbsp;



"Growing up I was very inspired by astronomy pictures, stars, nebulae and galaxies, and now it's our time to create a new type of picture to inspire people," said map creator Brice Ménard, a professor at Johns Hopkins. "Astrophysicists around the world have been analyzing this data for years, leading to thousands of scientific papers and discoveries. But nobody took the time to create a map that is beautiful, scientifically accurate, and accessible to people who are not scientists. Our goal here is to show everybody what the universe really looks like."



"In this map, we are just a speck at the very bottom, just one pixel. And when I say we, I mean our galaxy, the Milky Way which has billions of stars and planets. We are used to seeing astronomical pictures showing one galaxy here, one galaxy there or perhaps a group of galaxies. But what this map shows is a very, very different scale."



"From this speck at the bottom, we are able to map out galaxies across the entire universe, and that says something about the power of science."



The <a href="https://mapoftheuniverse.net/">interactive map</a> is available online, where it can be downloaded for free.

According to ESA, Lesotho is the only nation in the world that lies completely above 1,000 m in elevation. The country is famous for its tall mountains and narrow valleys, and is known as Africa's "Kingdom in the Sky."



Out of a population of around two million people, about 80 percent live in rural areas. More than 75 percent of these people are engaged in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-will-have-a-global-impact-on-agriculture/">agriculture</a>, including rainfed cereal production and animal grazing.&nbsp;



ESA reports that the country’s agricultural system faces a growing number of issues, with climate-related vulnerabilities such as drought, floods and extreme temperatures occurring more frequently. 



Diamonds are amongst the minerals found in the mountains. Indeed, Lesotho can truly be called the Kingdom in the Sky. Beautiful, culturally rich, safe, affordable, and easily accessible from Durban and Johannesburg, mountainous Lesotho is a vastly underrated travel destination. the Kingdom of Lesotho (Sotho: 'Muso oa Lesotho) is an enclaved country in southern Africa. It is just over 30,000 km2 (11,583 sq mi) in size and has a population of around 2 million.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Dublin, the capital and largest city of Ireland. Beyond its pub culture, Dublin is known as a modern culinary destination and a UNESCO City of Literature.



"Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland’s east coast in the province of Leinster. The city, which covers an area of around 115 square kilometers, is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range to the south, and is surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west," says ESA.



"The city straddles the River Liffey, which rises in the Wicklow Mountains and flows around 80 kilometers eastwards through the city of Dublin, in which it is canalised and bordered with quays. It then empties into Dublin Bay, an arm of the Irish Sea."



Dublin has an abundance of green spaces, including one of the largest enclosed public parks in any European capital city. Phoenix Park, which was originally formed as a royal hunting park in the 1660s, includes 707 hectares of green space.

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the province of Zaragoza in northeast Spain. The image was captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.



"Together with the provinces of Huesca and Teruel, Zaragoza formed the old kingdom of Aragon. Its capital, also called Zaragoza (not visible in this image) is home to around half of Aragon’s population," says ESA.



"The Ebro River can be seen winding its way through the province from west to east in this image. Between its source in the Cantabrian Mountains in the northwest and its delta on the Mediterranean coast, the Ebro River is fed by more than 200 tributaries as it flows 910 km across much of northern Spain."



Since rainfall is very scarce in this region, irrigation in the Ebro basin is critically important. In the valleys surrounding the Ebro River, many fields are used for growing crops such as corn, wheat, and barley.

Today’s Video of the Day from <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/">NASA Earth Observatory</a> reveals the evolution of the Columbia Glacier in southeastern Alaska. Columbia is among the fastest shrinking glaciers in the world, and the video documents its rapid retreat over the years.&nbsp;



Columbia Glacier is a large, multi-branched calving glacier that flows out of the Chugach Mountains to the Prince William Sound.&nbsp;



According to USGS, Columbia had a long history of stability prior to 1980, with a length 41 miles, and small, short-lived advances or retreats.



In the years since 1980, however, satellite images have captured Columbia’s alarming retreat. By using false-color images, scientists can distinguish between snow and ice, open water, vegetation, and rocky debris on the glacier’s surface.



The series of false-color images featured in today's video were acquired over the span of 35 years. You can see that by 2021, the glacier’s main branch had retreated about 15 miles from its initial position.



The Columbia Glacier has also lost more than 50 percent of its volume, mostly due to calving. <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/nasa-reveals-3d-visual-of-an-atmospheric-river/">NASA</a> reports that while climate change likely started the retreat, mechanical processes kept the disintegration going.



The NASA images are provided by Jesse Allen, Robert Simmon, Joshua Stevens, and Lauren Dauphin using data from Landsat satellites, from the U.S. Geological Survey, and data from MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite. The structure of Columbia’s moraine played a large role in the stability of the glacier before 1980. 



Like other tidewater glaciers, the Columbia built up a moraine over time, and the mixture of ice and rock functioned like a dam keeping out the sea. It was supported on one end by the shoreline and by the underwater terminal moraine at the other.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features the Pyrenees Mountains, which form a natural boundary between France and Spain in southwest Europe.



The mountain range is 430 kilometers in length. It stretches from the Mediterranean Sea on the east to the Atlantic Ocean on the west.



At an elevation of 3404 meters, Pico de Aneto is the highest mountain peak in the Pyrenees, and the third-highest peak in Spain. Pico de Aneto is located in the Posets-Maladeta Natural Park, which spans more than 82,000 acres.&nbsp;



"Geological studies have revealed that the Pyrenees Mountains have been around for longer than the Alps, with their sediments first deposited in coastal basins during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras," reports ESA.



"The entire mountain range formed due to the upwelling of large sedimentary rocks by the collision of the Iberian and the Eurasian plate around 100 to 150 million years ago, followed by intense erosion from ice and water."



The western Pyrenees receive more precipitation due to moisture blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. The mountain range contains many lakes, several small glaciers, and some of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

Today's Video of the Day from <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/goddard">NASA Goddard</a> describes two exoplanets that are orbiting a star 218 light-years away. A team of researchers led by the University of Montreal has found evidence that these planets are "water worlds."



The experts used data from NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. They discovered that exoplanets Kepler-138 c and Kepler-138 could be composed largely of water.



"We previously thought that planets that were a bit larger than Earth were big balls of metal and rock, like scaled-up versions of Earth, and that's why we called them super-Earths," explained study co-author Björn Benneke.&nbsp;



"However, we have now shown that these two planets, Kepler-138 c and d, are quite different in nature and that a big fraction of their entire volume is likely composed of water. It is the best evidence yet for water worlds, a type of planet that was theorized by astronomers to exist for a long time."
