A new national analysis shows that fewer newborn boys are being circumcised in U.S. hospitals. The trend spans 2012 through 2022 and affects many patient groups.



Researchers reviewed more than 1.5 million U.S. hospitalizations of male neonates (newborns aged 0 to 28 days) between 2012 and 2022. They found that the prevalence of hospitalizations involving neonatal male circumcision declined significantly during this period, dropping from 54.1 percent to 49.3 percent.



White newborns saw a drop from 65.3 percent in 2012 to 60 percent in 2022. The study also noted reductions among Asian, Pacific Islander and Native American <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-before-they-crawl-babies-can-feel-their-own-heartbeat/">infants</a>, with stability among Black and Hispanic infants.



Babies from the highest income ZIP codes and those with private insurance had the highest rates overall. They also showed the largest reductions over the decade.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-measuring-hospital-circumcision-rates">Measuring hospital circumcision rates</h2>



The team examined inpatient procedures during the first month of life, often called the neonatal period. They focused on circumcision, which is the surgical removal of the foreskin.



The researchers used the Kids’ Inpatient Database, the largest all-payer pediatric inpatient dataset in the United States. It is released periodically and draws from millions of hospital discharges.



This approach captures hospital-based care during birth hospitalizations. It does not include procedures performed outside the hospital.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-circumcision-rates-drop">Circumcision rates drop </h2>



"Based on our findings, we believe that multiple factors may contribute to the decline in the number of neonates circumcised," said Dr. Aaron Tobian, professor of pathology at the <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Johns Hopkins</a> University School of Medicine.



Some parents are skeptical of medical recommendations. Others weigh cultural or family traditions differently than in past decades.



Public insurance decisions can matter as well. One study of California’s 1982 policy change found a 25- to 31-percentage-point decrease in circumcision rates among Medicaid-financed births after coverage ended.



"Despite overwhelming evidence that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/without-bifidobacterium-microbes-babies-more-likely-suffer-from-asthma-eczema-allergies/">neonatal</a> male circumcisions provide health benefits, increasing public skepticism in the United States toward medical recommendations may be driving more parents to choose not to have their sons get circumcised," said Dr. Tobian.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-medical-groups-back-informed-choice">Medical groups back informed choice</h2>



Global agencies tied early guidance to infection prevention. In 2007, the World Health Organization and UNAIDS experts recommended that male circumcision be recognized as an additional intervention to lower the risk of heterosexually acquired <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/who-promotes-new-tool-lenacapavir-to-help-hiv-prevention-measures/">HIV</a> in men.



"Evaluation of current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks," stated the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in a 2012 policy statement. Pediatric leaders in the United States took a measured position.&nbsp;



"This document is intended to assist health care providers in the United States who share information with men and parents of male infants during decision-making about male circumcision," noted a 2018 CDC guidance for clinicians. Federal health officials emphasized informed counseling.&nbsp;



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-circumcision-health-effects">Circumcision health effects</h2>



Studies link the procedure to lower rates of certain infections. Evidence points to fewer urinary tract infection cases in infancy among circumcised boys.



The literature also shows lower acquisition of HPV and genital herpes in some settings. These effects vary by population and behavior.



Public <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-or-how-fast-study-examines-fascinating-cultural-differences-in-how-babies-are-calmed/">health</a> guidance frames circumcision as one tool among many. Safer-sex practices and testing remain essential for adults.

Parents face a decision that mixes health data with values. The AAP supports access to circumcision while leaving the choice to families.



Clinicians can outline benefits and risks in plain terms. They can also address pain control, timing, and aftercare. Insurance coverage can affect options, especially for Medicaid insured births. State policies differ and may change over time.



Families who decline the procedure can still take practical steps for hygiene and care. Families who choose it can plan for comfort and healing.

These numbers reflect inpatient procedures recorded in hospital data. They do not capture outpatient surgeries.

Race and ethnicity labels are drawn from <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/harmful-microbes-persist-on-hospital-surfaces-after-disinfection/">hospital</a> records. They may not perfectly reflect identity.



Income was measured by ZIP code, which can blur household level differences. Insurance type serves as a proxy for financial coverage.

Scientists in Iceland are not just trapping <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-capture-profitable-business/">carbon dioxide</a> (CO2) and storing it underground - they have developed a way to solidify the gas and turn it into rocks so that the CO2 will not reach the atmosphere for millions of years.

The Hellisheidi power station is the largest geothermal plant in Iceland, where heat from the Earth is converted to electricity. <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news">BBC News</a> is reporting that Hellisheidi is also the site of a revolutionary approach to carbon capture and storage (CCS). 

The project, which is known as <a href="https://www.or.is/carbfix">Carbfix</a>, was developed by an international team led by Reykjavik Energy. According to BBC News, CarbFix has evolved from an experiment to a permanent solution since trials were first launched in 2014. The technology currently stores a third of the power plant's carbon emissions, with 10,000 tons of carbon removed last year.

The process begins with trapping waste CO2 and dissolving it into water, which is pumped over 3,000 feet into the ground. The CO2 solution ultimately binds with porous basalt and turns into calcites that fill in the pores of the rocks.

With about 130 active and inactive volcanoes, Iceland has the ideal landscape for this CCS process because it is made up primarily of basalt, volcanic rock formed by the rapid cooling of lava. Carbon dioxide easily bonds to the calcium, magnesium, and iron found in basalts, which help the carbon harden into a mineral form.

Professor Sigurdur Gislason told BBC News that the solidification process of captured carbon was predicted to take “decades to thousands of years,” but the team found that it hardened in just around 400 days.

CarbFix geologist Sandra Snaebjornsdottir pointed out to the news outlet that this method of CCS could be implemented anywhere there is water and basalt, which is the most common rock in the world.

“The storage capacity is such that, in theory, basalts could permanently hold the entire bulk of CO2 emissions derived from burning all fossil fuel on Earth,” said Snaebjornsdottir.

Scientists in Iceland are not just trapping carbon dioxide (CO2)...

Amidst the latest headlines surrounding the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-fissures-kilauea-evacuations/">Kilauea volcano</a> in Hawaii, the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/k-lauea-volcano-erupts">United States Geological Survey's</a> constant updates of the volcano’s latest activity show how important seismic monitoring can be.

Kilauea is just one of the world’s most active volcanoes and studying hotspots of volcanic activity can aid in predicting eruptions and give seismologists a clearer understanding of magma systems. 

During the recent 2018 <a href="https://www.seismosoc.org/">Seismological Society of America</a> annual meeting, researchers from the <a href="http://www.ecgs.lu/">European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology</a> presented a discussion on the many different methods being used to monitor lava lake levels of the Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Nyiragongo is another extremely active volcano with a persistent lava lake that seismologists are keeping a steady eye on. 

In 2002, an eruption of the volcano sent a river of lava into the town of Goma, displacing hundreds of thousands and causing a major humanitarian crisis. 

During the eruption, the lava lake drained to a depth of 600 to 800 meters before eventually filling up again. The current levels are high and the lava lies about 400 meters below the top of the crater. 

Researchers are monitoring Nyiragongo’s lava lake using satellite imagery to measure lake depth as well as analyzing seismic and infrasound signals generated by the volcano which is collected continuously. 

“The lava lake level is, among other things, related to the variations of the pressure inside the magmatic system underneath Nyiragongo volcano,” said Adrien Oth from the European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology. 

According to Oth and his colleagues, the lava lake “represents a window into the magmatic system, and its level fluctuations provide information on the recharge and drainage of the magmatic system, such as batches of fresh magma and/or gas, or lateral magmatic intrusions into the surrounding crust.”

Using many different techniques to observe, track, and record lava lake activity gives the researchers an in-depth look at the volcano. The team can gauge pressure changes with the infrared seismic activity measurements and use satellite imagery to show variations in lake levels. 

Images taken by the satellites measure the length of the shadow cast by the crater's edge on the lake surface and the researchers can use this to calculate the lake’s depth. 

There had only been very little data on the volcano and its activity from previous years, and so the new expansive monitoring effort is a critical addition to not only understanding the inner workings of Nyiragongo and but also in predicting future eruptions. 

“Over the past few years, our consortium assisted the Goma Volcano Observatory to deploy one of the densest modern real-time telemetered monitoring systems in Africa,” said the researchers. “Combined with modern processing techniques, these newly acquired datasets provide unprecedented opportunities to investigate the behavior of this unique magmatic system.”

Nyiragongo volcano in Congo is one of the most active on Earth

Amidst the latest headlines surrounding the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii,...

Officials in Lee County, Florida, will soon be testing out drone technology to battle mosquitoes. The county is one of only ten sites in the country that has been approved by the federal government to test drones for various applications.

Authorities in Lee County will now be permitted to fly drones in ways that are not permitted under the current law. They can test drones at low altitudes, directly over people, and will also be allowed to test drones at night.

The <a href="https://www.faa.gov/">Federal Aviation Administration</a>'s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program was created to provide the government with information on how to effectively and safely integrate UAS into the National Airspace System. The project also aims to identify the range of applications available using drone technology.

Eric Jackson is a public information officer at the Lee County Mosquito Control District in southwestern Florida. He told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/">CNBC</a> that the district relies heavily on aerial operations. The county already uses small aircraft and helicopters to address pest problems, which may explain why the site was chosen to participate in the federal program.

“We've been doing this for 60 years with aircraft dealing with mosquito issues, so I'm thinking that might have played a part,” Mr Jackson told CNBC.

The county has plans to use a 1,500-pound drone as part of its operation to combat <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mosquitoes-thrive-less-greenery/">mosquitoes</a>. Lee County is the only site selected for the program that will use the drone technology for pest control management.

In Oklahoma, drones have been approved to monitor livestock and crops. In Nevada, the city of Reno will use drones for the time-sensitive delivery of life-saving medical equipment.

Florida looking to use drone technology to combat mosquitoes

Researchers have successfully transferred a basic memory from one snail to another in an innovative new study.  

The research, conducted by researchers from the <a href="http://www.ucla.edu/">University of California Los Angeles</a> (UCLA), offers insight into the way memories are stored and processed in our cells and could pave the way for new treatments of diseases that affect <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/memory-loss-detected-eyes/">memory</a> like dementia and Alzheimer's. 

David Glanzman, a neurologist who led the study, used snails to test his hypothesis that certain memories are stored in RNA molecules rather than between brain cells. 

The results were published in the journal eNeuro and completely challenge the way we think about memory. 

For the study, Glanzman and his team applied electric shocks to the marine snail Aplysia californica. 

According to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/17/health/snail-memory-rna-science-study-trnd/index.html">CNN,</a> the researchers were “training” the snails by shocking the tails in order to elicit a physical response to being touched. 

“We induced a very simple kind of memory in the snails called sensitization,” Glanzman told CNN. “The result is, their reflexes were greatly enhanced. If we touched their skin, they'll contract very strongly.”

After the snails were ingrained with the physical response to the memory,  the researchers extracted RNA molecules from the trained snails and injected them into untrained snails. 

Next, the researchers tested the reflexes of the untrained snails and found they had similar responses to the trained snails and were just as affected by touch. 

The results suggest that Glanzman's thoughts on certain memories stored in RNA are accurate and that it may be possible to transplant these memories between subjects. 

Snails have very simple nervous systems and so the results are not without their limitations and future work will need to be conducted in order to see if the results can be replicated in more complex animals. 

The idea of transferring memories might sound more like the plot of a science fiction film, and according to an article in the <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/memory-transferred-between-snails-challenging-standard-theory-of-how-the-brain-remembers/">Scientific American</a>, the results have raised a lot of eyebrows in the scientific community. 

“I expect a lot of astonishment and skepticism,” Glanzman told the Scientific American. “I don’t expect people are going to have a parade for me at the next Society for Neuroscience meeting.”

For Glanzman, the study holds a lot of potential in reshaping that way we think about memory and could help with treatments for memory disorders. 

“We were able to transfer the memory using RNA,” Glanzman told <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/17/health/snail-memory-rna-science-study-trnd/index.html">CNN</a>. “So if you think about human disorders of memory like dementia, Alzheimer's and PTSD, if we can identify some of the RNA that produces learning like alterations, it is possible we could use that knowledge to create new and more effective treatments.”

Scientists successfully transplant memory between snails

Researchers have successfully transferred a basic memory from one snail...

Plants can fight back against pathogens that cause disease like a fungus that takes over a fruit or vegetable with gray mold disease.

The way that plants ward off unwanted pathogens is a subject of much interest to researchers as it could help ensure <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/3d-printing-food-industry/">food security</a>. 

Both plants and the pathogens that infect them use molecules called small RNAs which are important for invasion and defense. 

This process of using RNAs as a defense mechanism is called cross-kingdom RNA interference. Small RNAs can interfere with gene expression and this can work in the favor of the plant when the pathogen takes in small RNAs that inhibit its ability to infect. 

A new study conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/">University of California, Riverside</a> shows how these RNAs are packaged and delivered from the plant to the pathogen, something that previously had been a mystery. 

The results were published in the journal Science. 

Hailing Jin, a professor of microbiology and plant pathology at the University of California, Riverside led the study. 

The researchers focused on the fungus Botrytis cinerea in order to determine how small RNAs moved across the cellular boundaries between host and pathogen. 

After studying infected plants, the researchers found that after being infected with Botrytis cinerea, plant cells package small RNAs inside sacs called exosomes which are delivered from the cells to the site of infection. 

The fungus takes in the exosomes and the RNAs stops the disease by inhibiting the expression of certain fungal genes. The researchers call these exosomes “battling bubbles” because of their round shape and effective use as a defense mechanism. 

Jin has been working with RNAs,  plant immunity, and disease in an effort to develop effective and eco-friendly ways to control plant diseases that will aid in ensuring food production security. 

“The discovery of the role of exosomes in cross-kingdom RNA interference will help us develop effective delivery methods to target plant pathogens with artificial sRNAs, with the goal of controlling plant diseases in crops,”  said Jin.

The secret weapon plants use to battle deadly fungus

Plants can fight back against pathogens that cause disease like...

Every year, an estimated 750,000 people die from mosquito-transmitted diseases, these include malaria, dengue fever, and West Nile. 

A <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/swatting-mosquitoes-avoid-scent/">mosquito bite</a> can actually exacerbate some of these diseases, as research has shown infections from bites are more severe than those injected into mice with a needle. 

While these diseases themselves are heavily studied, the effects of mosquito bites and saliva, particularly in the absence of pathogens, on the human immune system is not well understood. 

This is because studies involving mosquito proteins found in saliva during the time of feeding were conducted with mice and therefore not an accurate model for explaining the effects on humans. 

Now, a new study also using mice engrafted with human stem cells sheds insight into the human immune response to proteins in mosquito saliva. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.bcm.edu/">Baylor College of Medicine</a> in Houston Texas and published in the journal<a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosntds/article?id=10.1371/journal.pntd.0006439"> PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. </a> 

Mosquito saliva contains a complex mixture of proteins which allows the mosquito to feed on a host. The saliva can inhibit coagulation of the blood to make it easier for the mosquito to get an adequate blood meal. 

This mixture of proteins in the saliva is also what causes the annoying itch sensation after a mosquito bite because the body is responding to the saliva, or foreign substance, that was recently left by the insect. 

In order to better understand how the proteins in mosquito saliva affect the immune system, the researchers engrafted human hematopoietic stem cells into mice which gave the mice components of a human immune system. 

The researchers then recorded any changes in the new immune cells after each mouse in the study was bitten by four mosquitoes that were not infected with any pathogen. 

There was a much larger amount of immune response to the bites than previous studies showed. The researchers found altered TH1 And TH2 T helper cells and an increase in levels of cytokines. 

The results also showed increases in several different cells through various points during the immune responses and most notably these immune responses were detectable for up to seven days after the bite. 

The study shows just how much our immune system is affected by the protein in mosquito saliva, even without pathogens and could help with reducing the number of people who suffer from  mosquito-transmitted diseases 

“Understanding how mosquito saliva interacts with the human immune system not only helps us understand mechanisms of disease pathogenesis but also could provide possibilities for treatments,” said the researchers.

Mosquito saliva causes immune responses that last for days

Our early mammalian ancestors were very fond of insects and today, researchers have discovered ancient enzymes in our genes, one still active, that specifically aid in breaking down the tough outer skeleton of insects while eating them. 

The study, conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.berkeley.edu/">University of Berkley</a>, sheds insight on how early mammals shifted their diet after the dinosaurs died out and delves into the evolutionary history of enzymes that developed specifically to aid in the digestion of different foods. 

The results were published in the journal Science Advances. 

First, the researchers analyzed the genomes of 107 different species of mammals and found enzymes that would have helped our digest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-insects-biofuel/">insects</a> in almost all of the mammal genomes. 

This led the researchers to theorize that early mammals, alive 66 million years ago, were mostly insectivores and we carry the evidence in our own genomes today. 

“It is a signature in your genome that says, once upon a time you were not the dominant group of organisms on Earth,” said Christopher Emerling, a member of the research team. “By looking at our genomes, we are looking at this ancestral past and a lifestyle that we don't even live with anymore.”

The outer shell of insects is made up of a tough carbohydrate called chitin and the enzymes that break it down are called chitinases. Humans have a chitinase gene, which makes sense because many humans still eat insects as part of their diet today. 

However, the researchers also found the remnants of three other inactive chitinase genes in the human genome. The team traced five different chitinase enzymes to a large group of mammals. 

In order to find out which chitinase enzymes were still active, the researchers used a database of animal genomes and the newly sequenced genomes of armadillos. 

The more insects in an animal’s diet, the more active chitinase enzymes it has. 

“The only species that have five chitinases today are highly insectivorous, that is, 80 to 100 percent of their diet consists of insects,” said Emerling. “Since the earliest placental mammals likely had five chitinases, we think that this makes for a strong argument that they were highly insectivorous.” 

The results of the study align with previous paleontology studies showing that the shape of skulls and teeth from early mammals meant that they ate mostly insects. 

Early mammals were insectivores but when the dinosaurs died off 66 million years ago, diets quickly shifted to match what many species typically eat today. 

Without the food competition from the dinosaurs, mammals could expand their diets to meat and plant-based, and the first carnivorous and herbivorous mammals arose within 10 million years of the extinction of the dinosaurs. 

The study shows how our diets can be imprinted in our DNA and shed insight into the role insect enzymes played in early mammal diets before the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. 

“This is suggesting that there are a lot of these enzymes that might be helping organisms digest their food,” said Emerling. “This goes from being a simple curiosity - humans have a chitinase, how cool! - to being something that can help us understand how different animals are adapted to their specialized diets.”

Early mammals ate insects until the dinosaurs died off

A study from the <a href="https://www.sfn.org/">Society For Neuroscience</a> has found new evidence to explain why some individuals are more resistant to authority than others. The researchers have identified specific behavioral traits and functional connectivity in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-feel-gratitude/">brain</a> that are associated with control aversion, which is the urge to rebel against constraints on personal decisions.

Individuals with higher levels of control aversion are at risk of making poor decisions when their choices are limited. For example, a person with a tendency toward control-averse behavior may be less compliant with a doctor's orders or less likely to accept critical medical treatments.

The experts found that an inclination to control-averse behavior was reflected in connectivity between two specific regions of the brain. Control aversion was also linked to distrust and a lack of understanding, according to the research.

Study co-authors Sarah Rudorf and Daria Knoch set out to better understand individual differences in control aversion by  using neuroimaging during a socially interactive game. 

A total of 51 college students engaged in a game that was designed to periodically limit their choices as they divided money between themselves and another player. At some points during the game, partners could choose to restrict the participants’ options of how to divide their assets by asking for a minimum amount of money.

After the games, the participants completed a questionnaire that measured any negative feelings that may be associated with rebellious behavior. The researchers found that feeling mistrusted or confusion about a partner's actions were strong predictors of control aversion.

The brain scans revealed distinctive activity which represented when participants were playing the game with free choice or when they were playing under the controlled conditions. 

The experts noted that the students were much more likely to exhibit defiant behavior when there was stronger connectivity between the parietal lobule and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

While the exact role that these two brain regions play in control aversion is not yet fully understood, further investigation may provide experts with a better understanding of the influence of choice restrictions on personal decisions.

The research is published in the <a href="http://www.jneurosci.org/">Journal of Neuroscience</a>.

A recent study could help create new addiction treatments and reduce the potential for relapse after shedding new light on the effects of heroin and cocaine.

It turns out that drug users experience differing levels of pleasure from cocaine and heroin depending on where the drug is taken. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="http://www.sussex.ac.uk/">University of Sussex</a> in Brighton and<a href="https://www.uniroma1.it/it/"> Sapienza University</a> in Rome. 

Published in the journal JNeurosci, the results show that the substance-specific rewarding effects of heroin and cocaine are dictated by location. 

For the study, the researchers first asked a group of female and male drug users who were receiving treatment at a medical center in Rome to remember a typical drug episode and also how pleasurable taking cocaine or heroin was in or outside the home.

Next, the researchers had another group imagine using the two drugs in different settings. The members of this group had their brain activity measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they pictured taking the drug. 

During the fMRI experiment, the researchers discovered that drug use activated the prefrontal cortex, the caudate and the cerebellum in the brain. These are the regions of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/meditation-breathing-brain-health/">brain</a> that process reward. 

After analyzing the responses from both groups, the researchers found that at home the participants preferred to take heroin, while cocaine use correlated with more pleasure in the brain's reward center when taken outside the home.

The study provides a new context for examining addiction and relapse and shows how the pleasurable effects of drugs depend on where the drug is used. 

The results could help with drug treatments and make users more aware of what is driving cravings in certain environments.

The rise of <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/artificial-intelligence-earthquakes/">artificial intelligence</a> has many wondering just how will it impact our society, industries, and the economy. 

The quick-self learning of artificial intelligence using complex algorithms could one day help doctors make accurate diagnoses or reduce the number of accidents on the road with safer self- driving cars. 

However, there are also major concerns that as AI becomes more and more a part of our lives, it could have irreversible consequences. 

According to Elon Musk, the inventor, engineer, and billionaire who wants to colonize Mars, AI is humanity’s “biggest existential threat.” 

“I’m increasingly inclined to think that there should be some regulatory oversight, maybe at the national and international level, just to make sure that we don’t do something very foolish,” Musk told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/27/elon-musk-artificial-intelligence-ai-biggest-existential-threat">the Guardian</a>. 

Musk isn’t alone in thinking that there need to be serious policies put in place to regulate AI. 

A newly published policy report from the <a href="https://policyatmanchester.shorthandstories.com/on_ai_and_robotics/index.html#group-contributors-sIsC15rVAW">University of Manchester</a>, titled “On AI and Robotics: Developing policy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” discusses the potential bias and marginalization that AI could bring. 

Researchers from the<a href="http://www.research.mbs.ac.uk/innovation"> Manchester Institute of Innovation Research</a> conducted the report. 

One of the main arguments of the report is that investments in AI will mostly be paid by taxpayers and as such, there needs to a significant effort made to ensure that the benefits of Artificial Intelligence are shared equally. 

In other words, as artificial intelligence advances, it must do so in a democratic and socially responsible way. 

“In these 'data-driven' decision-making processes some social groups may be excluded, either because they lack access to devices necessary to participate or because the selected datasets do not consider the needs, preferences, and interests of marginalized and disadvantaged people,” said Barbara Ribeiro,  a contributor of the report. 

The report also emphasizes that people need to be better educated on the differences between robotic technology and artificial intelligence. 

“Although the challenges that companies and policymakers are facing with respect to AI and robotic systems are similar in many ways, these are two entirely separate technologies - something which is often misunderstood, not just by the general public, but policymakers and employers too. This is something that has to be addressed,” said Anna Scaife, Co-Director of the University's Policy@Manchester team, who published the report. 

There are numerous potential and positive advancements that could happen with AI and robotics and experts agree that both technologies will have a serious impact on many different fields in the near future. 

The policy report authors hope that this research will convey the wide spectrum of possibilities with AI and robotics, and demonstrate how vital it is for policymakers, regulators, and researchers to ensure that advancements do not come at the expense of any one group of people.

If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to accidentally step on a patch of ice, you’re probably well aware of what happens next. The fact that ice is slippery – much to the chagrin of unassuming pedestrians – has been known for years. It’s why we use ice as a surface for sports such as speed skating, curling, and hockey. But while the slipperiness of ice is common knowledge, it’s not entirely understood from a science perspective.

In 1886, an Irish physicist by the name of John Joly presented the first scientific explanation for low friction on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/antarctic-glacial-meltwater-sea-level/">ice</a>. He posited that when an object touches the surface of the ice, the local contact pressure is so high that the ice melts, creating a liquid water layer that lubricates the sliding. Currently, the consensus is that although liquid water at the ice surface does reduce sliding friction on ice, it is not melted by pressure. Rather, the ice is melted by frictional heat produced during sliding.

Researchers Daniel Bonn, a professor at the <a href="http://www.uva.nl/en/home">University of Amsterdam</a>, and Mischa Bonn, from the <a href="http://www.mpip-mainz.mpg.de/home/en">Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research</a>, have now demonstrated that friction on ice is more complicated than previously thought. Using macroscopic friction experiments at temperatures ranging from 0 °C to -100 °C, they showed that the ice surface transforms from an extremely slippery surface at typical winter sports temperatures, to a surface with high friction at -100 °C.

In determining this, the research team performed spectroscopic measurements of the state of water molecules at the surface, and compared these with molecular dynamics simulations. This combination of theory and experiment determined that two types of water molecules exist at the ice surface: water molecules that are stuck to the underlying ice, bound by three hydrogen bonds, and mobile water molecules that are bound by only two hydrogen bonds. The mobile water molecules continuously roll over the ice, powered by thermal vibrations.

When the temperature is increased, the two types of surface molecules are interconverted: the quantity of mobile molecules is increased at the expense of molecules that are stuck to the surface of the ice. Interestingly, this change in mobility of the topmost water molecules at the ice surface – caused by increases in temperature – perfectly matches the temperature-dependence of the measured friction force. In other words, the larger the mobility at the ice surface, the lower the friction, and vice versa.

Ultimately, the researchers conclude that the high mobility of the surface water molecules is responsible for the slipperiness of ice. They also determined that, while the surface mobility continues to increase all the way up to 0°C, this is not an ideal temperature for sliding on ice. Experiments showed that the friction is minimal at a temperature of -7°C, which is the exact same temperature used at speed skating rinks. So although this study – published in the <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/journal/jpclcd">Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters</a> – is the first to uncover the hidden complexities of ice’s slippery nature, it seems like the sports world has known the ideal ice temperature all along.

A team led by Suzana Nunes at <a href="https://www.kaust.edu.sa/">King Abdullah University of Science and Technology</a> (KAUST) has modeled 3D porous materials after honeycombs. As a result, the experts have created a simple and fast method of developing selective filters that may ultimately be used to remove pollutants or viruses.

The honeycomb has long been admired for its natural structural complexity and has been the basis for many innovations including materials used in the aerospace industry, which are valued for their strength-to-weight ratio. 

In the current study, the researchers set out to develop porous materials that are stable, yet have a large surface area and the ability to selectively extract materials. 

Replicating the intricacy of honeycombs at the nanoscale, including the consistent patterns across individual compartments as well as across the entire structure, represents a major challenge.

But now, the KAUST team has proposed a simple method that can produce a flexible film with a complex structure and consistent patterns of interconnected, regularly-shaped pores. Remarkably, the entire production process takes less than five minutes.

The researchers collaborated with scientists in the Imaging and Characterization Core Lab, using a block copolymer called polystyrene-b-poly (t-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBA) to demonstrate their method. 

The experts combined various concentrations of PS-b-PtBA with different solvent mixtures and cast the solutions on glass plates. Next, they evaporated the samples for different lengths of time to promote the nucleation and growth of cavities with highly porous interconnecting walls. The solvent was then rinsed off the remaining film to halt the phase separation.

“By using this method we create an important platform to design artificial porous materials that replicate highly ordered porous and complex systems mimicking nature,” said study lead author Stefan Chisca.

“These have potential use for separations, such as virus filtration, and for biological scaffolds, such as those used for bone regeneration.”

The film has many other potential applications as well, including new technologies for drug delivery and filters for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/half-americans-air-pollution/">air pollution</a>.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/">Science Advances</a>.

The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.

Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.

The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
