Psychoactive drugs are often discussed in the context of risk, yet science keeps asking a different question. What do psychedelics teach us about how people connect, feel, and heal, and how can we study those effects carefully in humans?



Dr. Harriet de Wit, director of the Human Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory at the <a href="https://psychiatry.uchicago.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Chicago</a>, has spent her career building tools to answer those questions. 



She reflected on her work in a recent <a href="https://genomicpress.kglmeridian.com/view/journals/psychedelics/aop/article-10.61373-pp025k.0029/article-10.61373-pp025k.0029.xml" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interview</a>.



Two drugs sit at the center of the story, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/psychedelic-drug-mdma-shows-promise-for-reducing-post-traumatic-stress/">MDMA</a> and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/lsd-can-treat-crippling-anxiety-with-a-single-dose/">LSD</a>, because they shift internal states that standard lab tasks rarely capture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-studying-psychedelic-connections">Studying psychedelic connections</h2>



Dr. De Wit's work spans basic psychopharmacology and clinical translation, and her research program has been funded by the NIH for more than 42 years.



“The challenge of translating behavioral observations across species has continued to be a central theme in my research for the past 45 years,” said Dr. de Wit. 



She treats cross-species comparison as a tool to test which findings generalize and which do not.



Her path began with animal studies of drug taking, then moved into controlled trials with human volunteers. That shift opened the door to measuring self reported states that animals cannot convey.



She also insists on measuring both <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/study-shows-psilocybin-from-magic-mushrooms-delays-aging-and-significantly-extends-lifespan/">behavior</a> and self reporting. That approach allows human studies to capture experiences, like empathy or awe, that nonverbal animals cannot report.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-psychedelics-connect-humans">Psychedelics connect humans</h2>



A controlled laboratory <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-43156-0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> found that single doses of MDMA increased how connected people felt to a stranger during a guided conversation. 



According to Dr. de Wit, demonstrating that MDMA enhances feelings of social connectedness during interpersonal interactions has profound implications for treating trauma-related disorders globally.&nbsp;



In the same paradigm, methamphetamine produced a similar rise in ratings of closeness, but only MDMA’s closeness was linked to oxytocin levels in saliva.



Those data put numbers on an everyday observation that pharmacology can shift social experience. The finding also gives therapists a concrete target, the feeling of connection during real conversations, to measure in future trials.



The work used a double blind, with separate groups for MDMA and methamphetamine. Participants rated closeness at the end of the session and one week later, providing both immediate and short follow-up readouts.



The similar behavioral outcomes with different physiological <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/one-psychedelic-dose-may-improve-brain-flexibility/">patterns</a> point to multiple routes to the same social endpoint. That matters because the mechanism will shape safety, dosing, and how a therapy session is structured.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lsd-and-mdma-microdosing">LSD and MDMA microdosing</h2>



A randomized, double blind <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9731343/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trial</a> in healthy adults tested four low doses of LSD given every few days and found modest, short-lived subjective effects without lasting changes in mood or cognition. 



Safety looked acceptable in that controlled setting, but the expected broad cognitive boost did not appear.



Across sessions, some acute effects weakened, suggesting that participants developed a tolerance for the low-dose LSD over time. 



The high microdose reduced feelings of rejection during a social exclusion task during dosing days, yet those changes did not persist at follow up.



“Drugs such as MDMA and low doses of LSD produce unusual alterations in self reported internal states, such as feelings of empathy, awe, and oneness with the environment,” said Dr. de Wit. 



Her research team now asks whether those altered states actually change future behavior, generosity, or values.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-craving-can-rise-with-abstinence">Craving can rise with abstinence</h2>



A translational human <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3027849/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">study</a> in cigarette smokers documented incubation, the counterintuitive increase in cue triggered craving after longer abstinence periods. 



Across groups, cue-induced craving was greater after 35 days than after 7 days, even as background withdrawal eased.



The result pushes back against the idea that craving simply fades with time away from a drug. Clinicians can plan check-ins for later windows when cue reactivity rebounds, which may help people stay off cigarettes.



The design verified abstinence day by day and tested responses to smoking cues in a controlled setting. That level of control strengthens confidence that timing itself can shape craving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/breathwork-creates-psychedelic-states-without-drugs/">responses</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-place-matters-in-addiction">Why place matters in addiction</h2>



In a foundational human <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2693956/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">paper</a>, volunteers developed a conditioned place preference for a room paired with amphetamine, and their preference tracked how much they liked the drug during conditioning. 



The result validated a widely used animal assay in people and tied subjective liking to learned context.



Procedurally, the study used repeated conditioning sessions followed by a test day when people rated the rooms. That design allowed the team to connect learned preference to the specific feelings the drug produced during training.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-feeling-connected-with-psychedelics">Feeling connected with psychedelics</h2>



A phase 3 <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-023-02565-4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trial</a> reported that MDMA assisted therapy reduced symptom severity and functional impairment in people with moderate to severe PTSD. 



These clinical outcomes sit alongside lab-based evidence that MDMA can increase feelings of connection during real conversations.



Translation is never automatic, but it is not a shot in the dark. By pairing controlled human experiments with clinical trials, researchers can map which laboratory effects actually move the needle in care.



“I am concerned about the decline in respect for science, scholarship, and education,” said Harriet de Wit. A long running research program only exists when society is willing to invest in it.

A <a href="http://www.researchamerica.org/sites/default/files/JAN2018PressReleaseSlidesFINAL29JAN18.pdf">new survey</a> has found that the overwhelming majority of Americans want President <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trump-confuses-climate-change/">Trump</a> to prioritize science and technology in his efforts to strengthen the nation’s infrastructure.

The survey was commissioned by <a href="http://www.researchamerica.org/">Research!America</a> and the results show that across the board, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents are in agreement that an emphasis should be put on science and innovation. 

When asked specifically if the President’s plans to improve infrastructure should include science, technology, and engineering, 86 percent of Republicans, 85 percent of Democrats and 72 percent of Independents were in agreement. 

Survey responders were mixed when asked if America’s global superiority in science and innovation would strengthen or weaken in 2018, but the results still spoke to the importance of research and science at a national scale. 

Nearly 50 to 82 percent of Americans say that scientists should play a major role in shaping public policy, which included defense, job creation, education, and infrastructure.

Questions involving private sector research, government funding for research, and the importance of Congress understanding scientific issues showed strong majorities in favor of research funding, particularly medical research. 

Reducing health care costs, increasing access to health care, and tackling the opioid epidemic were voted the top three priorities that the federal government should focus on. 

While President Trump has verbally addressed the opioid epidemic, declaring it a public health emergency, but no new funding has been given to combat the crisis. 

The Research!America survey found that 64 percent of Americans want more funding and research initiatives to help understand and treat opioid addiction.

Other health initiatives that were mentioned in the survey include an increase in funding for researching rural medical care and improving access for rural health care. 

The study shows how important science, research, technology, and innovation are to the American public and that they should be given priority by the current administration when looking for ways to improve infrastructure and healthcare.

Survey: Majority of Americans say Trump should prioritize science

A new survey has found that the overwhelming majority of...

New research from <a href="http://home.dartmouth.edu/">Dartmouth College</a> suggests that we perceive the world the same way that our friends do. An investigation revealed that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/friends-synch-brain-waves-happier/">friends</a> have very similar neural response to real-world stimuli such as video clips.

The study is the first of its kind to compare the neural activity of people within a social network as they respond to real-world prompts.

“Neural responses to dynamic, naturalistic stimuli, like videos, can give us a window into people's unconstrained, spontaneous thought processes as they unfold,” said lead author Carolyn Parkinson. “Our results suggest that friends process the world around them in exceptionally similar ways.”

The study was focused on the social connections of nearly 280 graduate students. Based on mutually reported social ties, the experts estimated the social distance between pairs of individuals.

The researchers presented 42 of the participants with videos on subjects ranging from politics to music. While the students watched the videos, the team recorded their neural activity in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. 

The students viewed the same videos in the same order, and were given the same instructions. The researchers found that resemblance in neural response was significantly strongest among friends. Exceptionally similar patterns of activity could be seen across the brain regions involved in emotional response, high-level reasoning, and focusing.

The researchers found that fMRI response similarities could be used to predict not only if two participants were friends, but also the extent of social distance between the pair.

“We are a social species and live our lives connected to everybody else,” said senior author Thalia Wheatley. “If we want to understand how the human brain works, then we need to understand how brains work in combination-- how minds shape each other.”

This research expanded on a previous study by the team, which found that our brains immediately inform us of how important or influential individuals are to us as soon as we see them.

Next, the researchers want to examine how we end up becoming close with people who think the same way we do. They will explore whether we are naturally drawn to these particular people or if we become more similar after the friendship is established. 

The study is published in in <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

A new study of how we as humans learn <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/music-universal-language/">language</a> could have exciting implications for language education and the treatment of language disorders such as dyslexia. 

It’s long been thought that the human capability of language is the result of specific brain components that evolved for language alone. 

But now, researchers have shown that language is learned in ancient brain circuitry that is part of many learning and memory-related tasks, and that these systems even pre-date humans.

“These brain systems are also found in animals - for example, rats use them when they learn to navigate a maze,” said Phillip Hamrick, a co-author of the research. “Whatever changes these systems might have undergone to support language, the fact that they play an important role in this critical human ability is quite remarkable.” 

The study was published in the journal PNAS and involved 16 studies that examined language learning in the brain. 

There are two commonly studied brain systems that are associated with language and learning: declarative memory and procedural memory. 

All studies combined had 665 participants, and the researchers analyzed the different methods and research and combined the results. 

The results showed that our ability to remember words is directly linked to declarative memory, which is also necessary for memorizing shopping lists and learning to drive. 

Adults learning a new language also used declarative memory at first, and then procedural memory in the later stages, which makes sense as children learning the grammar of their native tongue use procedural memory. 

Both procedural and declarative memory are used with other tasks besides language which proves that language learning is not an inherently human trait, nor is there a special brain system devoted to it. 

The results were similar when different languages were studied, and the findings could help pave the way for understanding how the brain learns different languages and help treat language disorders.

Humans learn language using ancient brain circuitry

A new study of how we as humans learn language...

When it comes to human evolution, our round brains appear to be a relatively recent development.

Or at least, that’s the conclusion a team of researchers from Germany’s <a href="http://www.eva.mpg.de/">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</a>. The scientists have based their findings on the study of 300,000-year-old fossils from Jebel Irhoud in Morocco – some of the earliest remains of Homo sapiens.

The shapes of these ancient skull fragments, as well as others found in South Africa and Ethiopia, indicate that early modern humans had similar facial features and teeth to present-day humans, but their elongated brain case was more similar to archaic human species.

“Our data show that, 300,000 years ago, brain size in early H. sapiens already fell within the range of present-day humans,” the researchers wrote in their study, published in the journal <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/4/1/eaao5961">Paleontology</a>. “Brain shape, however, evolved gradually within the H. sapiens lineage, reaching present-day human variation between about 100,000 and 35,000 years ago.”

The paleoanthropologists used computer technology to scan the fossils, then create models of the skulls that allowed them to better image the brain case. They found that the gradual rounding process of the human skull likely came after changes led to more modern facial features.

"The brain is arguably the most important organ for the abilities that make us human," study co-author Dr. Simon Neubauer said in a press release. "We already knew that brain shape must have evolved within our own species, but we were surprised to discover just how recent these changes to brain organization were."

The Max Planck team’s findings line up with new discoveries in genetic studies on evolutionary changes in Homo sapiens following the split with Neandertals, who didn’t have the round brains modern humans do.

"The gradual evolution of modern human brain shape seems to parallel the gradual emergence of behavioral modernity as seen from the archaeological record," co-author Dr. Jean-Jacques Hublin said.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.en.uni-muenchen.de/">Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet</a> (LMU) in Munich recently discovered the oldest fossil in the Archaeopteryx genus, and their findings shed new light the evolutionary steps between bird-like dinosaurs and modern <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-birds-shrink/">birds</a>. 

The genus Archaeopteryx describes a group of feathered dinosaur species and is considered the earliest known bird. Paleontologists often describe Archaeopteryx fossils as transitional because they bridge the gap between dinosaurs and birds. 

Archaeopteryx lived during the late Jurassic Period 1150 million years ago in what is now Northern Bavaria. The landscape would have been subtropical with lagoons and reef islands during that time.

All Archaeopteryx fossils have been found in Northern Bavaria in the Altmühl River valley. The most recent fossil belonging to the genus was unearthed in 2010 and is the oldest known fossil of Archaeopteryx that has been discovered. 

The new find is the 11th fossil specimen of Archaeopteryx found to date. 

Researchers led by Oliver Rauhut, an LMU professor from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, analyzed the fossil using stratigraphy. Stratigraphy is used by geologists and paleontologists a way to map the geological history of different layers, or strata, in rocks. 

The discovery provided new insight into the genus and showed some features that were not yet known about the group of species. 

The researchers were able to use the fossil to show differences between Archaeopteryx and both of its bird and dinosaur relatives. 

Because of the limited number of fossils that have been found and the wide range of variations in anatomy among them, there is a good deal of uncertainty about the genus and its species. 

“The high degree of variation in the teeth is particularly striking - none of the specimens shows the same pattern of dentition as any other, which could reflect differences in diet,” said Rauhut. “It is even conceivable that this primeval bird genus might, in a similar fashion, have diversified into several specialized forms on the islands of the Solnhofener Archipelago.”

The severe <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smoke-toxic-gases-wildfires/">wildfires</a> that plagued California during the summer and fall of 2017 cost millions in damages was just another indication of the increasing effect of climate change. 

As temperature increase and droughts become more and more frequent, the risk of fires will also increase. 

<a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> satellite instruments can detect wildfires and can send vital data about the size and location to land managers. These satellites and technology are crucial to understanding how wildfires spread, the range and direction of the smoke direction, and how the fires impact the ecosystems. 

“NASA's satellite, airborne and field research capture the full impact of fires in the Earth system, from rapid detection of actively burning fires, transport of smoke and changes in ecosystems in the days to decades following fire,” said Doug Morton, a research scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Satellites collect data across the globe several times throughout the day, some as frequently as every five to fifteen minutes.

There are two different types of satellites that monitor the Earth and send data back. First is the polar orbiters that can take detailed looks of views and smoke around the world, and second are the geostationary satellites. 

There are dozens of instruments that help specifically with monitoring and analyzing fires, and this data is critical to disaster response efforts. 

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument collects data on carbon monoxide concentrations and pollution from burning fires. 

The Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) instrument focuses on smoke plumes, as measuring their height can then dictate how far the smoke will travel in the atmosphere. 

Other instruments can provide both visible imageries during the day and infrared imagery at night, with thermal detectors that reveal fire hotspots that are actively burning, their smoke plumes, and heat signatures from the fires. 

Temperature, smoke plumage, pollution from smoke particles, location, and the extent of damage are all necessary to understanding, combating, and preventing fires across the globe, and NASA instruments provide crucial data to accomplish this task.

Satellites can be crucial tools in battling wildfires

Researchers have found evidence that modern humans may have left Africa at least 50,000 years earlier than previously thought. The team has discovered the earliest modern human <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/preparing-fossils/">fossil</a> that has ever been found outside of Africa.

The international research team was led by Israel Hershkovitz from <a href="https://english.tau.ac.il/">Tel Aviv University</a>.Rolf Quam is a professor of Anthropology at <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/">Binghamton University</a> and a co-author of the study.

“Misliya is an exciting discovery,” said Quam. “It provides the clearest evidence yet that our ancestors first migrated out of Africa much earlier than we previously believed. It also means that modern humans were potentially meeting and interacting during a longer period of time with other archaic human groups, providing more opportunity for cultural and biological exchanges.”

The fossil was recovered from a site in Israel called Misliya Cave. The remains consisted of an upper jaw bone with several teeth. 

The researchers used micro CT scans and 3D virtual modeling to compare the fossil to other hominin fossils from Africa, Europe, and Asia. They established that the jaw bone and teeth are between 175,000-200,000 years old, which completely changes the timeline of human migration out of Africa.

“While all of the anatomical details in the Misliya fossil are fully consistent with modern humans, some features are also found in Neandertals and other human groups,” said Quam. “One of the challenges in this study was identifying features in Misliya that are found only in modern humans. These are the features that provide the clearest signal of what species the Misliya fossil represents.”

The fossil evidence showed that humans in the Misliya Cave were hunters of large game, were capable of controlling the production of fire, and had access to an Early Middle Paleolithic stone tool kit. These tools closely resemble those found with the earliest modern humans in Africa.

The researchers explained that older fossils of modern humans have been found in Africa, but the timeline of human migration out of Africa and the routes that were used are key to a better understanding of the evolution of our species. This particular region in the Middle East portrays a major passage for human migrations, as both modern humans and Neanderthals were settled here at different times.

This fossil evidence suggests that there may have been a genetic merger with local populations further back than scientists have thought, according to Quam. Recent fossil discoveries in Asia are also pushing back the earliest emergence of modern humans out of Africa.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

Humans left Africa 50,000 years earlier than previously believed

A new study by 21 experts from 15 institutions around the world has revealed that the tiniest particles can have a major influence on the weather. The research demonstrates how particles smaller than one-thousandth the width of a human hair can intensify storms and rainfall events.

The small airborne particles, which are known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/volcanic-aerosols-cool-climate/">aerosols</a>, come from many sources including industrial air pollution and wildfires. While it has been believed that aerosols may play an important role in the weather, the new research suggests that these particles have a much bigger influence than what scientists had anticipated.

Jiwen Fan is a researcher at the <a href="https://www.pnnl.gov/">Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory</a> and the lead author of the study.

“We showed that the presence of these particles is one reason why some storms become so strong and produce so much rain,” said Fan. “In a warm and humid area where atmospheric conditions are otherwise very clean, the intrusion of very small particles can make quite an impact.”

The research was conducted using ground-based and airborne measurements related to climate during 2014-2015 from the research campaign GoAmazon. 

The study was focused on data from one region in the Amazon, in particular. Manaus is the largest city in the Amazon with a population of more than 2 million people, yet the city is surrounded by pristine Amazon rainforest. This setting gave the researchers a rare opportunity to look at the impact of atmospheric particles and processes in a largely pre-industrial environment.

Scientists set out to closely examine the role of particles less than 50 nanometers wide in the development of thunderstorms. Larger particles that are similar to those observed in the study are known to create clouds and play a role in creating water droplets that fall like rain, but this is the first time that scientists discovered that smaller particles have this same effect.

In fact, computer simulations showed that the smaller particles have an even more powerful impact on the formation of clouds and precipitation than the larger particles. 

“We've shown that under clean and humid conditions, like those that exist over the ocean and some land in the tropics, tiny aerosols have a big impact on weather and climate and can intensify storms a great deal,” said Fan. “More broadly, the results suggest that from pre-industrial to the present day, human activity possibly may have changed storms in these regions in powerful ways.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>.

There has always been debate surrounding whether people are born “smartypants” or if intelligence something that is attained through hard work and focus. Are human behaviors and development found in our DNA or do external environmental factors shape us? 

These questions make up the basis of the nature versus nurture debate, which has long been of interest to many in the scientific community. But now, new research has found that to some extent, intelligence is in our genes. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a> and is the first-ever study to show how genetic differences, or variants as they are called, in DNA can determine intelligence. 

For the study, the researchers analyzed genetic markers in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dna-onvict-rhinoceros-hunters/">DNA</a> of 20,000 people looking specifically for any indicators that would match higher or lower IQs or reflect intelligence. 

The researchers identified rare genetic variants that appeared to have a determining effect on whether someone was intelligent or not, and these combined variants explained half of the differences in intelligence between the subjects in the study. 

The study examined and analyzed both common and rare variants, but it was the rare variants that appeared to have a greater impact on intelligence. 

“We used two methods to measure the effect that rare variants had on intelligence,” said Dr. David Hill, a member of the research team. “By combining the effect of both rare and common variants, more than 50% of the differences in intelligence between people could be traced to their genes.” 

While a person certainly can’t be born with information or an education, the new research shows that perhaps some get a headstart simply through a genetic gift.

Scientists have filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for what they believe are unlawful changes in the way the organization assembles its advisory boards. The <a href="https://www.ucsusa.org/">Union of Concerned Scientists</a> claims that the new legislation is not justified and also violates the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which protects the integrity of advisory committees.

Last October, EPA Administrator <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scott-pruitt-doubts-global-warming/">Scott Pruitt</a> announced that any scientist who received EPA grants for research funding would not be allowed to serve on any of the agency's 23 scientific advisory boards. Critics say that it is an arbitrary move, and that the agency is lacking in any real facts to support the enforcement of its new appointment system. 

Joshua Goldman is a senior policy analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists. “The EPA hasn’t bothered to make the case for why EPA grants create a conflict of interest,” Goldman said in a <a href="https://www.ucsusa.org/news/press-release/EPA-advisory-committee-lawsuit#.WmjfSoFOnqD">press release</a>. “Mr. Pruitt simply can’t justify this decision, especially when there are no such restrictions on scientists who get funding from the industries the EPA oversees.”

Goldman said that this is yet another example of the Trump administration's refusal to base its policies on impartial scientific evidence.

“This is an abuse of power and an affront to the scientific integrity of the EPA and the federal government,” said Goldman. “This directive singles out scientists from the nonprofit and academic sector - recognized experts in their field who want to serve the public - and asks them to choose between public service and their scientific work.”

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday in the United States District Court by <a href="https://protectdemocracy.org/">Protect Democracy</a>, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization. The scientists are asking the court to repeal the EPA’s new regulation before it is implemented and disrupts the fair balance of the advisory committees.

“When we ban America’s top scientists from providing their expertise to the EPA, we all suffer,” said Goldman. “EPA advisory boards examine vital questions, like what makes for unsafe levels of pollution in the air and the amount of chemical exposure that constitutes a health risk. EPA rules need to be based on the best available science. This directive fundamentally undermines the EPA’s ability to carry out its mission of protecting all Americans.”

Scientists have filed a lawsuit against the Environmental Protection Agency...

Two adorable monkeys have become the first ever primates cloned from transferred DNA and were born just six and eight weeks ago in China.

The monkeys were cloned by a research team from the Non-Human Primate Research Facility at the<a href="http://www.ion.ac.cn/"> Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Neuroscience </a>in Shanghai, and their results were recently published in the journal Cell. 

It’s a revolutionary breakthrough that marks one of the most significant steps in cloning since <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/dolly-cloned-sheep-anniversary/">Dolly the Sheep</a>. 

The research team behind the successful cloning attempt hope their work will pave the way for customizable uniform lab monkeys that will help researchers study diseases. 

Critics of cloning are concerned that the new monkeys bring us closer to cloning humans, and the ethical ramifications of human cloning is a topic of much discourse.

However, besides a few unverified and retracted studies and hoaxes, there have been no successful human cloning attempts made. 

The monkeys, Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, were cloned using a single cell nuclear transfer technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), which was the same technique that was used for Dolly 20 years ago.

There are several cloning methods used today, but SCNT works by transferring the nucleus from a single cell to a donated egg cell that then develops into an embryo. 

Other methods use different techniques such as embryo splitting which is simpler, and in 1999, was used to clone a rhesus monkey successfully. But Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua are the first primates that were cloned with somatic cell transfer. 

The researchers used DNA extracted from fetal connective tissue, and once the DNA was transferred to the donated eggs, certain genes that would have hindered the embryo from developing were switched off with genetic reprogramming. 

The researchers are excited about the implications that Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua could have on disease research especially treating human genetic diseases. 

“You can produce cloned monkeys with the same genetic background except for the gene you manipulated,” said Dr. Qiang Sun, who led the research. “This will generate real models not just for genetically based brain diseases, but also cancer, immune or metabolic disorders and allow us to test the efficacy of the drugs for these conditions before clinical use.”

Valence is a term used to describe the good and bad feelings that neurons assign to different experiences, tastes, or sensations in the amygdala part of the brain. 

Valence helps us discern bad smells and bitter tastes from good ones by assigning emotions to them. But how does the brain define good and bad tastes and experiences? 

Now, new study examines exactly how valence assignment occurs in the amygdala and the neural circuitry involved. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://picower.mit.edu/">Picower Institute for Learning and Memory </a>and published in the journal Cell Reports. 

The researchers focused on the basolateral amygdala and were able to show which neurons were involved in the valence processing circuitry, how the neurons interacted, and where the neural response was located and projected to in the brain. 

For the study, the researchers gave trained lab mice sucrose and quinine drops to activate bitter and sweet tastes. 

The two tastes were given a different sound tone so the mice learned to associate the tastes with sound. After playing the tones, the researchers identified which neurons responded and mapped its corresponding valence assignment. 

Once the key neurons involved in valence assignment were identified, the researchers were able to make them responsive to pulses of light, which showed how the different neurons interacted in the basolateral amygdala and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-records-body-weight/">brain</a>. 

The results showed that positive valence was associated with the nucleus accumbens region of the brain and negative valence assignment was connected to the central amygdala. 

The inner workings of valence assignment could help with treatments and therapies for mental health disorders. 

“Perturbations of emotional valence processing is at the core of many mental health disorders,” said Kay Tye, the leader of the study. “Anxiety and addiction, for example, may be an imbalance or a misassignment of positive or negative valence with different stimuli.”

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
