Rocks and water are not just scenery. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air, transport it through rivers, and set off reactions that later play out on the seafloor. They play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle.



A new study argues that these reactions form a single, connected system stretching from high ridges to deep marine basins. 



The researchers concluded that we must treat land and ocean together if we want an accurate picture of how much carbon is stored or released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linked-systems-shape-carbon">Linked systems shape carbon</h2>



Jeremy Caves Rugenstein, an associate professor of geosciences at <a href="https://www.colostate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a> (CSU), studies long-term climate and weathering feedbacks. His team links what rivers carry off the land to how marine sediments process that cargo.



“Here we propose that the Earth’s silicate weathering occurs along a continuum linking mountains to the deepest sedimentary environments and forward to reverse weathering,” said Gerrit Trapp-Müller, a geoscientist at <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> (UU).



The experts show why downstream chemistry depends on where particles come from, how fast they were eroded, and the conditions they meet along the way.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weathering-drives-carbon-chemistry">Weathering drives carbon chemistry</h2>



Chemical silicate weathering transforms reactive rock <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/minerals-shaped-human-dna-in-surprising-ways/">minerals</a> into dissolved components that flow to the sea. These reactions consume atmospheric carbon dioxide as bicarbonate, which can later become carbonate minerals on the seafloor. This process has major implications for the global carbon cycle.



In marine muds, a different process - known as reverse weathering - forms new clays and releases carbon dioxide. These reactions alter the water’s alkalinity, which chemists use to track the acid–base balance that governs carbon chemistry.



The formation of marine clay minerals, also called reverse silicate weathering, plays a central role in controlling seawater pH.



The new study shows that these forward and reverse reactions are not independent. River particles inherit a history and continue reacting in floodplains, shelves, and deep basins. The balance can flip depending on the mineral mix and the local environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-swings-big-impacts">Small swings, big impacts</h2>



On land, a 2021 global analysis estimated atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-based-carbon-dioxide-removal-may-not-be-effective/">carbon dioxide</a> consumption by continental silicate weathering at 0.133 to 0.169 gigatons per year. That is not insignificant, and it operates continuously over time.



However, other studies suggest these fluxes may be overestimated by roughly 12 to 28 percent at the global scale. This caution matters because even small percentage changes translate into long-term climate differences.



The continuum study also highlights a recurring control. When weathering rates on land are high relative to erosion, many river particles have already lost most of their reactive cations. This shift nudges marine sediments toward reverse reactions.



Observed modern ratios of weathering to erosion cluster between 0.03 and 0.09, and changes within that range can shift the balance on the ocean side.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ocean-s-role-in-weathering">The ocean’s role in weathering</h2>



“Authigenic clay formation can proceed even faster, within weeks to months,” wrote Sonja Geilert, <a href="https://www.geomar.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GEOMAR</a> researcher and lead author of a 2023 study. That was observed after extreme rainfall delivered fresh reactive minerals from land to Peru’s shelf.



Marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-sediments-predict-future-stressors-for-cold-water-corals/">sediments</a> occupy the intersection of biological activity, mineral inputs, and water chemistry. In shelf muds rich in iron and aluminum, reverse weathering can accelerate and reduce alkalinity. In areas supplied with fresh volcanic ash or mafic minerals, forward weathering can dominate and increase alkalinity.



Rates also depend on transport. When waves and currents churn the seabed, or when organisms pump water through burrows, reactions accelerate.



When sedimentation is steady and deep, the balance can flip with depth as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-weather-satellite-delivers-early-data-just-weeks-after-launch/">conditions</a> shift from oxygen-poor to sulfur-rich to methane-rich layers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-land-gains-ocean-losses">Land gains, ocean losses</h2>



Enhanced weathering on farm soils has attracted attention as a carbon removal strategy. With national-scale modeling, this approach could have sizable potential. The promise is real, and co-benefits for soils add to its appeal.



The new continuum view adds a necessary caveat: much of the material weathered on land may eventually feed reverse reactions at sea.



This means that some carbon-cycle gains on land could be reduced or delayed downstream. Verifying net removal requires tracking not only what dissolves in fields but also what happens to the products once rivers carry them to coasts.



The details depend on rock type, particle size, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/">rainfall</a>, and transport pathways. Basalt-rich amendments can drive land reactions toward greater alkalinity release.



However, coastal settings rich in aluminum and iron can still push marine balances toward reverse weathering. Careful monitoring must follow the chain from source to sink.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-directions-for-climate-models">New directions for climate models</h2>



The continuum concept encourages <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/">climate models</a> to couple land, shelf, and deep-ocean weathering more tightly. This includes representing the observed short timescales for clay formation in dynamic margins and capturing how biology and hydrodynamics alter surface area and transport.



Better constraints will come from isotope tracers, mineral fingerprints, and direct measurements of alkalinity changes in sediments. The goal is not only to tally global fluxes but also to identify when and where the balance flips - and why.



Weathering also shares the stage with other carbon-cycle players. Oxidation of ancient organic carbon on land can add carbon dioxide, while burial of reduced sulfur in anoxic muds can help preserve alkalinity. Untangling these threads across shared landscapes and seascapes remains a challenge.



Policymakers and engineers should anticipate regional variation. Strategies that succeed in one basin may require a different approach in another. Verification rules must reflect that spatial complexity without losing sight of measurable carbon outcomes.

As <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chocolate-supply/">we reported</a> this week, the world’s chocolate supply is in danger of running out by 2050. Climate change could make conditions unsuitable for cacao plants to thrive and chocolate production would be unable to keep up with growing worldwide demand for the sweet treat. 

Every year, billions of pounds of chocolate are consumed around the world, and on average, people eat anywhere between <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2015/07/22/the-worlds-biggest-chocolate-consumers-infographic/#214ed78e4484">ten and twenty pounds </a>of the confectionary on an annual basis. 

Mars, the company behind some of the world’s most recognizable brands and bars such as Snickers, M&amp;Ms, and Twix, has big plans in order to ensure the cacao bean is safe from extinction. 

In September, the 35 billion dollar corporation pledged $1 billion as part of a plan to reduce the company's carbon footprint by 60 percent or more by 2050.

But the company is also partnering with researchers to work on genetically editing the cacao plant to withstand harsher conditions brought on by climate change. 

Mars, in collaboration with the <a href="http://berkeley.edu/">University of California Berkeley</a>, is exploring gene editing using  CRISPR-CAS9 technology on cacao plants. 

The ultimate aim is to make seedlings that can handle a warmer and drier climate. 

CRISPR allows scientists to make precise cuts in a strand of DNA, removing defective or detrimental portions of the DNA and replacing it with a healthy part that bonds with the DNA strand.

CRISPR could one day eradicate genetic diseases and is also being used create crops that have a fighting chance in the face of climate change. 

The Berkeley research team is headed by Jennifer Doudna, the creator of CRISPR, and the cacao plant is not the only crop that the team is working with. 

If successful, gene edited crops like the cacao plant could help ease global food shortages brought on by the weather extremes, drought, and diseases that climate change is projected to cause and worsen.

Genetically modified cacao could stop chocolate from running out

A new study from researchers at the <a href="http://illinois.edu/">University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign</a> is contradicting what many experts believe about the cause of volcanic activity in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstone-eruptions-changed-planet/">Yellowstone</a>. 

The findings of the analysis indicate that a tectonic plate known as the Farallon Plate, which began descending below the continent of North America about 200 millions of years ago, may have triggered past volcanic eruptions in Yellowstone.

Scientists have long believed that a mantle plume, or abnormally hot rock that rises from the Earth's core, was responsible for this activity. 

“The heat needed to drive volcanism usually occurs in areas where tectonic plates meet and one slab of crust slides, or subducts, under another,” <a href="https://news.illinois.edu/view/6367/590721">said</a> study lead author Lijun Liu. 

“However, Yellowstone and other volcanic areas of the inland western U.S. are far away from the active plate boundaries along the West Coast. In these inland cases, a deep-seated heat source known as a mantle plume is suspected of driving crustal melting and surface volcanism.”

The “supervolcano” located beneath Yellowstone National Park last erupted 640,000 years ago, but the activity in this region dates back 17 million years. As the eruptions moved in a northeastern direction, records were left behind in the form of craters.

Because these tracks resemble the ones left behind from a mantle plume which developed the Hawaiian islands, many experts derived that a hotspot of rock in the Earth’s core must also be responsible for the past eruptions in Yellowstone National Park.

As a result of the current study, however, Liu and his colleagues have determined that the Farallon Plate is shifting the Earth’s mantle circulation. Computer simulations modeled by the team suggested that this interaction is the driving force behind the volcanic activity in Yellowstone.

“A robust result from these models is that the heat source behind the extensive inland volcanism actually originated from the shallow oceanic mantle to the west of the Pacific Northwest coast,” Liu told the <a href="https://news.illinois.edu/">Illinois News Bureau</a>. “This directly challenges the traditional view that most of the heat came from the plume below Yellowstone.”

The research is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ngeo/">Nature Geoscience</a>.

Could an ancient ocean plate be fueling Yellowstone supervolcano?

After reevaluating a prehistoric fossil that was found on a Scottish Island almost 30 years ago, scientists are assembling a clearer picture of life during the Middle Jurassic Period. 

The 170 million-year-old jawbone, which appears to be that of a dog-like crocodile, was found within a rock at Duntulm Castle on the Isle of Skye. The fossil measured only around 3.5 centimeters in length. 

Experts captured high resolution x-ray images of the bone and derived that the ancient animal most likely resembled a scaly dog much more than it did a scaly alligator. The findings of the study suggest that the animal is from a family of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/take-look-brand-new-species-crocodile/">crocodiles</a> known as neosuchians.

Dr. Steve Brusatte is a vertebrate paleontologist and evolutionary biologist at the <a href="https://www.ed.ac.uk/">University of Edinburgh</a>. 

According to <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html">MailOnline</a>, Dr. Brusatte said, “Bits and pieces of fossil crocodiles have been found on Skye before, but this is one of the nicer fossils, because it is a nearly complete jawbone. It tells us that small, dog-sized crocodiles lived in the lagoons of ancient Skye, during the same time dinosaurs were living on land.”

Dr. Brusatte also explained the significance of the tiny jawbone. 


“One reason why the new fossil is so important is because it is one of the few crocodile fossils from the middle part of the Jurassic Period from anywhere in the world.”

The Isle of Skye is one of the only places in the world where remains from the Middle Jurassic Period can be found. 

MailOnline quoted Dr. Brusatte as saying, “Skye is a unique window into the Middle Jurassic, as it is one of the few places globally that preserves fossils from this time. There are not only crocs, but also many dinosaurs, mammals, lizards, amphibians, and fish fossils found on Skye, and we keep finding more and more every time we go back.”

A new study has sequenced the expansive genome of a species of salamander and the results could someday allow humans to regenerate lost limbs, organs, and damaged brain tissue. 

Many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossilized-eggs-flying-reptiles/">reptiles</a> have regenerative capabilities, but the Iberian ribbed newt can regenerate limbs, organs, and even part of its brain, far surpassing the regrowth abilities of other salamanders and reptiles.

Until now there has been little known about the genome of salamanders and what it is about their DNA structure that gives them regenerative abilities. 

Researchers from<a href="http://ki.se/"> Karolinska Institutet </a>in Sweden successfully sequenced the genome of the Iberian Ribbed Newt. Salamander genomes are some of the largest genomes ever sampled, ranging from 14 to 120 gb. 

“It's only now that the technology is available to handle such a large genome,” said Professor Andras Simon from the Karolinska Institutet. “The sequencing per se doesn't take that long – it's recreating the genome from the sequences that's so time-consuming.” 

The Iberian ribbed newt genome contains around 20 billion DNA base pairs and is six times greater than the human genome. 

The researchers also identified a large number of copies of a microRNA group that is typically found in embryonic stem cells in mammals. 

The copies are likely what gives the newt it's impressive regenerative abilities as embryonic stem cells can transform into any other cell in the human body. 

The results could lay the groundwork for making tissue repair and limb regeneration a possibility for humans and vertebrates.

A scientific breakthrough in the world of agriculture could help crops grow in record time thanks to a new speed breeding technique. 

A research team from the <a href="https://www.jic.ac.uk/">John Innes Centre</a>, <a href="https://www.uq.edu.au/">University of Queensland</a>, and the <a href="https://sydney.edu.au/">University of Sydney</a> developed a speed breeding technique that accelerated wheat growth with immensely successful results.

A full cycle of wheat took only eight weeks from seed to harvest thanks to long, intense periods of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/photosynthesis-plants-started/">photosynthesis</a>, artificially aided with LED lighting.  

Speed breeding could be a necessity in the coming years with growing demand for food outweighing available land for productive and sustainable crop growth. 

“Globally, we face a huge challenge in breeding higher yielding and more resilient crops,” said Dr. Brande Wulff from the John Innes Centre, Norwich, a lead author on the paper. “Being able to cycle through more generations in less time will allow us to more rapidly create and test genetic combinations, looking for the best combinations for different environments.”

The researchers were able to speed up growth and breeding by creating fully controlled artificial environments with enhanced lighting. The intensified lighting sped up wheat growth from seed to harvest, aka seed to seed, in eight weeks. 

This technique could produce as many six generations of wheat in a single year. 

The lab environment could easily be replicated in a typical greenhouse, and the technique could work for many different vital crops. 

Other breeding methods currently being used today are not nearly so successful in their application as this new process.

One exciting result of the speed breeding technique is the opportunities it presents to the field of crop genetics. 

"Speed breeding as a platform can be combined with lots of other technologies such as CRISPR gene editing to get to the end result faster," said Dr. Lee Hickey, a member of the research team. 

The technique is already being welcomed by wheat breeders and has helped researchers in Australia develop wheat with a tolerance to pre-harvest sprouting, a huge problem for breeders in the country.

A new technique could help crops grow in record time

Even though the five-year drought that plagued California has technically ended, wildfires ravaged the state in December, leaving behind massive <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/burn-scars-california-wildfires/">burn scars</a>.

North America recently experienced an uptick in forest fires, as has parts of Russia, which have been linked to both global warming and <a href="http://siberiantimes.com/other/others/news/its-like-war-as-wildfires-rage-across-siberia-and-the-russian-far-east/">human activities</a>.

Forest fires cause habitat degradation, a shortage of resources, and can cost billions in damages. Wildfires also release large amounts of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. 

Boreal forests act as a carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The roots, leaves, stems, and branches soak up carbon and help store it. But when a wildfire removes hundreds of acres of trees, the previously stored carbon is released. 

Now, researchers from the <a href="http://www.ras.ru/en/index.aspx">Russian Academy of Science</a> and <a href="https://www.global.hokudai.ac.jp/">Hokkaido University</a> have found that charcoal remains left behind after a fire increased decomposition of organic matter and sped up carbon release. 

The researchers performed field litterbag experiments, where organic matter is put in a bag and left in the open for a period of time in order to measure decomposition. 

The researchers incubated fine larch tree roots and soil in bags with different concentrations of charcoal in the soil and left them for 515 days. 

There were four different charcoal levels for the experiments, either equal to, less, or more than the charcoal levels found naturally in the field where the experiments took place. 

After a time, the fine roots decomposed in mass quantity no matter the charcoal content in the soil, but the researchers noted that more roots decomposed the greater the levels of charcoal in the soil. 

This means that forest fires, which leave charcoal remains in their wake, add even more carbon emissions than previously realized. 

“Our study has provided the first field evidence that fire-derived charcoal might accelerate the decomposition of fine larch roots and consequently CO2 emissions from boreal forest,” said  Makoto Kobayashi, a co-author of the study. 

The results of the study are useful for future predictions of accurate C02 emissions from wildfires.

Have you made a New Year’s resolution to invest in solar panels, use public transportation more, or ask your city to look installing charging stations for hybrid cars? If so, you may be helping to curb climate change, a new study says.

The study, led by Dr. Brian Beckage of the <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/">University of Vermont</a>, drew on both social psychology and climate data to determine how humans are reacting to climate change and whether the changes they’re making are having any effect on rising global temperatures.

"A better understanding of the human perception of risk from climate change and the behavioral responses are key to curbing future climate change," Beckage said in a press release.

The study – a joint effort by the <a href="http://www.nimbios.org/workinggroups/WG_risk">Working Group on Human Risk Perception and Climate Change</a> at the <a href="https://www.utk.edu/">University of Tennessee, Knoxville</a>, and the <a href="https://www.sesync.org/">National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center</a> at the <a href="https://www.umd.edu/">University of Maryland</a> – used data on human perceptions of climate change and its associated risks going back to 2013, as well as climate data.

They found that behavioral changes – especially those that could not be easily reversed, like insulating homes, buying hybrid cars, or installing solar panels – do actually help to curb climate change.

The study calls out a missing aspect of most climate change models: human behavior. Many climate change models don’t take human behavior or efforts to reduce atmospheric carbon emissions into account.

“It is easy to lose confidence in the capacity for societies to make sufficient changes to reduce future temperatures. When we started this project, we simply wanted to address the question as to whether there was any rational basis for 'hope' – that is a rational basis to expect that human behavioral changes can sufficiently impact climate to significantly reduce future global temperatures," said Louis J. Gross, director of the Working Group at University of Tennessee and a study co-author.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/s41558-017-0031-7">Nature Climate Change</a>. Funding was provided by the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation</a>.

Changes in behavior can help curb climate change

Monitoring streams can be a key part of making sure a healthy landscape stays healthy. Streams and their ecosystems can be the first places many negative environmental changes are seen, making them a sort of early warning system for the local watershed.

But monitoring methods can be improved for many streams and waterways, according to a new study.

"Basically, instead of standing in a large stream far from the headwaters and observing what flows past us through time, we illustrate that it can be much more informative to periodically travel around the region and grab samples from the smallest to the largest streams in the watershed," Dr. Jay Zarnetske said in a press release. 

Zarnetske, a professor at <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a>, co-authored the study, which looked at how streams can reflect the health of the surrounding watershed.

A watershed is the land surrounding a river, stream or other body of water where rainfall or snow melt flows into that body of water. However, it’s not just rain that flows from a watershed into a stream or river. Agricultural fertilizer and pesticides can also flow into a stream, as can oil and other road waste through storm drain systems, damaging an otherwise healthy landscape.

Monitoring a stream can give water and land use managers, scientists and other stakeholders a better idea of what they can do to make sure practices are sustainable. 

For example, agriculture can be a major polluter. Nutrients from phosphorus- and nitrogen-based fertilizers can cause algae blooms and overgrowth of certain plants, including invasive species. Pesticides and fuel runoff can harm wildlife and cause “dead zones” in the water.

"Most people have no idea that the human manipulation of the phosphorus and nitrogen cycles is occurring, is affecting nearly every place on the planet and is one of, if not the greatest, current threat to the fate of humanity,” Zarnetske said.

By traveling to collect samples and make observations throughout a stream’s course rather than monitoring a single point at the headwaters or where it flows into a larger lake or sea, scientists can get a better idea of the stream and watershed’s overall health, as well as pinpoint problems that might be harming an otherwise healthy landscape.

The study, led by Dr. Ben Abbott of <a href="https://www.byu.edu/">Brigham Young University</a>, studied a watershed in an agricultural region in France. They found that factors such as temperature and water flow could be enough to alter the stream’s chemistry.

While better monitoring can help improve farming sustainability, it can also be helpful in predicting how melting Arctic and Antarctic landscapes might affect local watersheds.

The study has been published in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1461-0248">Ecology Letters</a>.

Researchers at the <a href="http://www.nus.edu.sg/">National University of Singapore</a> may have just created a safe alternative to drinking alcohol with a glass which can trick the mind into believing that water is actually a cocktail. The virtual drink uses LED lights, electric impulses, and scent cartridges to appeal to a person's senses.

“Our approach is to augment beverage flavor experience by overlaying external sensory stimuli,” said lead author Dr. Nimesha Ranasinghe. “For example, in the ‘vocktail’ we overlay color, taste and smell sensations to create an adjustable flavor experience."

Dr. Ranasinghe explained that flavor, which is how we primarily perceive food, is accomplished through the use of the senses.

“Therefore, by changing the color of the drink, using a different smells and changing the taste through electricity, we are able to simulate the flavor of a drink, without it actually changing the liquid,” she said.

The virtual cocktail appeals to the senses of sight, smell, and taste through the use of a smartphone application. With the touch of a button, users can change the simulated drink.

Colors which are projected from the base of the glass mimic the colors of actual <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/alcoholic-beverages-emotional-responses/">alcoholic</a> beverages, such as a maroon light for red wine and a bright orange light for a screwdriver.

The rim of the glass contains two electrode strips that emit electrical pulses onto the tongue to arouse the taste buds. 180 microamps correspond with a sour-flavored drink, 80 microamps induce a bitter flavor, and 40 microamps are used to imitate a salty taste.

In addition, the glass has scent cartridges which are connected to air pumps. Different scents are intended to fool the brain into believing that what you smell is what you are actually tasting.

The scientists are now working on ways to silently release the scents and also to increase the amount of smells which are available.

Dr. Ranasinghe acknowledged that the external stimulation of the senses is not the same as experiencing an actual drink, and she said that the team is “constantly conducting experiments to create an even more immersive experience.”

“We want to bring it to pubs and bars, but we need industry partners to bring it out of the lab and into reality,” said Dr. Ranasinghe.

Sitting down at a desk all day comes with a range of health risks, including hypertension, poor circulation, cardiovascular disease, high-blood pressure, and stress on your back and neck. Many people also find, especially if going from an active job to a sedentary desk job, that weight gain is common. 

Now, a new study, published the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has revealed that sitting all day interferes with the body’s internal scale. 

Swedish researchers discovered that the brain monitors and records body weight every time someone stands. If the brain senses <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/canola-oil-brain-decline/">weight gain</a>, it will send the right signals to the body that stop overconsumption of calories.

Obsessing over your bathroom scale may be unnecessary, as your body naturally measures weight throughout the day. 

However, the researchers also realized that this process is hindered by sitting all day, and so the brain doesn’t register weight the same way. 

“We believe that the internal body scales give an inaccurately low measure when you sit down,” said Professor Claes Ohlsson, a member of the research team. “As a result you eat more and gain weight.” 

For the study, the researchers used mice which also have an internal scale that made daily measurements of weight and weight gain. 

Obese mice had weights attached to them and as this extra weight was recorded, the mice cut back on their food intake. The mice lost the same amount of weight as was added artificially.

The mice that lost weight also had lower body fat and better blood glucose levels. 

The results of the study are promising, and the researchers hope that the findings may help with new treatments for unwanted weight gain. 

“We have discovered a completely new system that regulates fat mass,” said Professor John-Olov Jansson, the study’s lead author. “We hope this discovery will lead to a new direction in obesity research.”

Two interconnected whirlpools have been witnessed in the ocean for the first time between Australia and New Zealand. A single whirlpool, or an eddy, is a common occurrence in the ocean, but a pair of whirlpools was something that was only a myth until now.

For decades, scientists have believed that a pair of whirlpools, which is known as a modon, was possible. Oceanographer Chris Hughes from the <a href="https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/">University of Liverpool</a> is the first person to ever spot a modon.

“Ocean eddies almost always head to the west, but by pairing up they can move to the east and travel ten times as fast as a normal eddy, so they carry water in unusual directions across the ocean,” explained Hughes.

“What we found was a pair of eddies spinning in opposite directions and linked to each other so that they travel together all the way across the Tasman Sea, taking six months to do it.”

While examining satellite images of the ocean's surface, Hughes noticed a region of the water that was behaving unusually. He told <a href="https://www.popsci.com/">Popular Science</a>, “Almost all these eddies drift slowly westwards, but this little feature was going quickly eastwards.”

The experts established that this was, in fact, a modon. Based on this evidence, they looked at previous satellite imagery and identified nine other modons, which dated back to 1993. All of the previous events had taken place around Australia, while one double whirlpool was detected in the Atlantic Ocean.

The experts believe that this phenomenon takes place when two whirlpools collide in the ocean. The powerful motion of the whirlpools causes nutrients to rise to the surface of the ocean from the deeper, colder waters below. 

The scientists theorize that these double whirlpools have enough force to suck up and transport minerals, heat, water, or even organisms to other parts of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/oceans-buffer-greenhouse-gas/">ocean</a>.

"My thinking is that these linked, fast moving eddies could 'suck-up' small marine creatures and carry them at high speed and for long distances across the ocean," said Hughes.

The study is published in <a href="http://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-8007/">Geophysical Research Letters</a>.

Double whirlpools spotted in the ocean for the first time

On December 25th, construction workers in China uncovered a treasure trove of preserved dinosaur eggs that date back to the Cretaceous period. 

The Christmas discovery was made in the Ghanzou region of Dayu County, China, while explosives were being used on the construction site of a new middle school.  

The workers noticed clusters of oval stones and black shards in the newly cleared debris, dirt, and rocks and halted construction immediately. 

The police were notified, and the construction site was sealed off while experts from the Dayu County Museum were brought in to confirm the findings and transport the eggs back to the museum where they could be examined further. 

The construction workers had unknowingly unearthed a collection of 30 <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-fossil-racist-nazi-science/">dinosaur</a> eggs which archaeologists say are 130 million years old. 

Eggshells, the black debris that construction workers had first noticed, were also found with the fossilized eggs. 

These are not the first fossils found in the Ghanzou region, as the area is known as the “hometown of dinosaurs.” 

Ghanzou is especially known for its oviraptorid dinosaur fossils, and according to a study published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-05016-6">Scientific Reports</a>, the region has one of the richest sources of oviraptorosaurian fossils in the world. 

Several new species of oviraptors have been discovered there and named after the region over the past several years.

The new fossil eggs will be studied at the local museum and added to Ghanzou’s rich collection of dinosaur finds.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing.

Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
