Rocks and water are not just scenery. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air, transport it through rivers, and set off reactions that later play out on the seafloor. They play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle.



A new study argues that these reactions form a single, connected system stretching from high ridges to deep marine basins. 



The researchers concluded that we must treat land and ocean together if we want an accurate picture of how much carbon is stored or released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linked-systems-shape-carbon">Linked systems shape carbon</h2>



Jeremy Caves Rugenstein, an associate professor of geosciences at <a href="https://www.colostate.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a> (CSU), studies long-term climate and weathering feedbacks. His team links what rivers carry off the land to how marine sediments process that cargo.



“Here we propose that the Earth’s silicate weathering occurs along a continuum linking mountains to the deepest sedimentary environments and forward to reverse weathering,” said Gerrit Trapp-Müller, a geoscientist at <a href="https://www.uu.nl/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Utrecht University</a> (UU).



The experts show why downstream chemistry depends on where particles come from, how fast they were eroded, and the conditions they meet along the way.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-weathering-drives-carbon-chemistry">Weathering drives carbon chemistry</h2>



Chemical silicate weathering transforms reactive rock <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/minerals-shaped-human-dna-in-surprising-ways/">minerals</a> into dissolved components that flow to the sea. These reactions consume atmospheric carbon dioxide as bicarbonate, which can later become carbonate minerals on the seafloor. This process has major implications for the global carbon cycle.



In marine muds, a different process - known as reverse weathering - forms new clays and releases carbon dioxide. These reactions alter the water’s alkalinity, which chemists use to track the acid–base balance that governs carbon chemistry.



The formation of marine clay minerals, also called reverse silicate weathering, plays a central role in controlling seawater pH.



The new study shows that these forward and reverse reactions are not independent. River particles inherit a history and continue reacting in floodplains, shelves, and deep basins. The balance can flip depending on the mineral mix and the local environment.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-swings-big-impacts">Small swings, big impacts</h2>



On land, a 2021 global analysis estimated atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ocean-based-carbon-dioxide-removal-may-not-be-effective/">carbon dioxide</a> consumption by continental silicate weathering at 0.133 to 0.169 gigatons per year. That is not insignificant, and it operates continuously over time.



However, other studies suggest these fluxes may be overestimated by roughly 12 to 28 percent at the global scale. This caution matters because even small percentage changes translate into long-term climate differences.



The continuum study also highlights a recurring control. When weathering rates on land are high relative to erosion, many river particles have already lost most of their reactive cations. This shift nudges marine sediments toward reverse reactions.



Observed modern ratios of weathering to erosion cluster between 0.03 and 0.09, and changes within that range can shift the balance on the ocean side.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-ocean-s-role-in-weathering">The ocean’s role in weathering</h2>



“Authigenic clay formation can proceed even faster, within weeks to months,” wrote Sonja Geilert, <a href="https://www.geomar.de/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GEOMAR</a> researcher and lead author of a 2023 study. That was observed after extreme rainfall delivered fresh reactive minerals from land to Peru’s shelf.



Marine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-sediments-predict-future-stressors-for-cold-water-corals/">sediments</a> occupy the intersection of biological activity, mineral inputs, and water chemistry. In shelf muds rich in iron and aluminum, reverse weathering can accelerate and reduce alkalinity. In areas supplied with fresh volcanic ash or mafic minerals, forward weathering can dominate and increase alkalinity.



Rates also depend on transport. When waves and currents churn the seabed, or when organisms pump water through burrows, reactions accelerate.



When sedimentation is steady and deep, the balance can flip with depth as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/new-weather-satellite-delivers-early-data-just-weeks-after-launch/">conditions</a> shift from oxygen-poor to sulfur-rich to methane-rich layers.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-land-gains-ocean-losses">Land gains, ocean losses</h2>



Enhanced weathering on farm soils has attracted attention as a carbon removal strategy. With national-scale modeling, this approach could have sizable potential. The promise is real, and co-benefits for soils add to its appeal.



The new continuum view adds a necessary caveat: much of the material weathered on land may eventually feed reverse reactions at sea.



This means that some carbon-cycle gains on land could be reduced or delayed downstream. Verifying net removal requires tracking not only what dissolves in fields but also what happens to the products once rivers carry them to coasts.



The details depend on rock type, particle size, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-is-increasingly-unpredictable-due-to-climate-change/">rainfall</a>, and transport pathways. Basalt-rich amendments can drive land reactions toward greater alkalinity release.



However, coastal settings rich in aluminum and iron can still push marine balances toward reverse weathering. Careful monitoring must follow the chain from source to sink.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-directions-for-climate-models">New directions for climate models</h2>



The continuum concept encourages <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-models-underestimate-sea-ice-melt-and-global-warming/">climate models</a> to couple land, shelf, and deep-ocean weathering more tightly. This includes representing the observed short timescales for clay formation in dynamic margins and capturing how biology and hydrodynamics alter surface area and transport.



Better constraints will come from isotope tracers, mineral fingerprints, and direct measurements of alkalinity changes in sediments. The goal is not only to tally global fluxes but also to identify when and where the balance flips - and why.



Weathering also shares the stage with other carbon-cycle players. Oxidation of ancient organic carbon on land can add carbon dioxide, while burial of reduced sulfur in anoxic muds can help preserve alkalinity. Untangling these threads across shared landscapes and seascapes remains a challenge.



Policymakers and engineers should anticipate regional variation. Strategies that succeed in one basin may require a different approach in another. Verification rules must reflect that spatial complexity without losing sight of measurable carbon outcomes.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-025-01743-y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature Geoscience</a>.

An upcoming <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/">BBC</a> documentary will explore what the legendary Tyrannosaurus Rex was really like. The Real T.rex With Chris Packham claims that the prehistoric creature was not accurately depicted by early scientists or in films.

Tyrannosaurus Rex was an enormous dinosaur, with the most complete specimen measuring about 40 feet in length and between 15 and 20 feet in height. The massive animal had strong and powerful hind legs and the largest known teeth, which were about eight inches in length.

Despite the fact that T-Rex is the most well-known of all the dinosaurs, paleontologists are now reporting that popular images of the beast are not entirely realistic.

Scientists have determined that T-Rex had some characteristics that resembled birds more than reptiles, such as black, spiky feathers. Because the creature did not require the feathers for insulation, experts on the film concluded that it had “a light patching of feathery bristles strategically placed for social display.”

Paleontologists also believe that T-Rex likely had colored markings around its eyes, which may have been used for mating or identification. The experts drew this conclusion from unusual markings on the animal's skull and also considered similar markings on other predatory birds.

Although T-Rex has been portrayed as having a tremendous and powerful roar, the documentary suggests otherwise. Film host Chris Packham teams up with Julia Clarke, a professor of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas</a>, to explore the possibility that dinosaurs actually sounded more like birds and reptiles than large predators.

“The most chilling noises in the natural world today come from predators, the howl of the wolf, the roar of the tiger, but experts now doubt that T-Rex sounded anything like them,” said Packham.

CT scans of a fossilized <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tyrannosaurus-rex-big-run/">T-Rex</a> skull indicate that the intimidating animal released low rumbling sounds that could travel long distances.

“It’s such a low frequency that you wouldn’t have just heard it, you would have felt it too,” said Packham. “There is a sort of primal fear that is associated with sounds like that.”

“The Real T.rex with Chris Packham” will air on BBC2 January 2nd.

Documentary reveals what the Tyrannosaurus Rex really looked like

An upcoming BBC documentary will explore what the legendary Tyrannosaurus...

A potentially hazardous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/skull-shaped-asteroid/">asteroid</a> blasted past the Earth today, traveling at a speed of 21,500 miles per hour. The space rock was on a trajectory that is closer to the planet than the moon, which is unusually close.

The asteroid, 2017 YZ4, was just discovered three days ago by scientists at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Lemmon_Survey">Mount Lemmon Survey Observatory</a> in Arizona on Christmas Day. The experts reported that 2017 YZ4 measured between 27 and 49 feet in diameter.

The asteroid was only 139,433 miles away from the Earth when it approached, which is close enough to be considered a “near miss” by scientists. For example, NASA describes a “near Earth object" as any object that passes within six million miles of the Earth.

A representative of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> told <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/news">The Express</a>,“This is the first known asteroid to flyby Earth within one lunar distance since two such asteroids flew past us 35 minutes apart on November 21, and the 52nd this year.”

“As of December 24, there are 17,495 known Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) around our planet; 17,389 are asteroids,” said the spokesman. “This year, we discovered 1,985 new near Earth asteroids. There were 1888 such objects discovered in 2016 and 1,571 in 2015.”

2017 YZ4 is one of the Apollo series of asteroids, which approach the Earth on a regular basis. The group was discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930’s and named after the first of the series, the 1862 Apollo asteroid.

Asteroid that blew past the Earth today was a “near miss”

The northern part of the United States will be ringing in the new year with freezing temperatures, wind chill advisories, and in some states, record <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/erie-pennsylvania-snow/">snowfall</a>. 

During the winter months, colder weather typically doesn’t phase residents of the midwest or northeast United States. But things may get chillier in the coming years as scientists are predicting a mini-ice age with temperatures dropping in 2021, all thanks to the sun’s solar cycle. 

The Earth has faced similar conditions from 1646 to 1715, when a phenomenon called the Maunder Minimum caused temperatures to drop, and even resulted in the Thames River in England freezing over. 

Now, researchers from Britain and Russia say the Thames could freeze over again in 2030. The recent study used mathematical models of the sun’s magnetic activity and solar cycles. 

The models show that two of the sun’s magnetic waves will decrease and become out of sync starting in 2021. As a result, the solar cycles will end up canceling each other out, sending the world into a mini-ice age that will last 33 years. 

In order to create the accurate models, the researchers analyzed magnetic field observations from the <a href="http://wso.stanford.edu/">Wilcox Solar Observatory</a> in California and reviewed three solar cycles of activity dating from 1976 to 2008.  

The Maunder Minimum, which was the last recorded time when the world faced similar conditions, saw a period of solar inactivity where sunspots were rare. 

Professor Valentina Zharkova from<a href="https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/"> Northumbria University</a> led the research and said that the models are extremely accurate, but because of global warming, the research should not serve as hard proof that a small ice-age will occur. 

“I hope global warming will be overridden by this effect, giving humankind and the Earth 30 years to sort out our pollution," Zharkova told <a href="https://news.sky.com/">Sky News</a>. “We have to be sorted by that time and prepare everything on Earth for the next big solar activity,” she said.

Researchers in Argentina have successfully manipulated the gene sequences of cloned horses to create a new breed that is physically superior. The “super horse” was engineered to have improved endurance and stamina, and should be able to run faster and jump higher than other racehorses.

Scientists at the <a href="http://www.kheiron-biotech.com/">Kheiron Biotech</a> laboratory used a powerful gene editing tool known as Crispr to target specific regions of DNA for alteration. In particular, they manipulated the myostatin gene sequence which limits skeletal muscle growth. Suppressing the myostatin gene allows the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/horses-read-posture-humans/">horses</a> to develop more muscle mass.

The experts managed to produce healthy embryos using this technique, and will implant the embryos into surrogate mothers at some point in the next two years. This means that the world's first super horse may be born as early as 2019.

Daniel Sammartino is the founder of Kheiron Biotech, which is a facility that specializes in equine cloning. 

“This technology brings additional progress in horse breeding,” said Sammartino. “It could be possible to achieve better horses in less time.”


In 2013, Kheiron Biotech produced the first clone of a polo pony in Latin America, and the technique has rapidly advanced in the time that followed. The company claims that it is now accomplishing the same level of healthy births generated by traditional breeding methods.

The work at Kheiron is intended to “accelerate genetic evolution in sports animals.” There are currently no regulations in place that would prevent the faster and stronger “super horses” from competing in major sporting events, including The Olympics.

“Our next real challenge is not only to export our technology, but fundamentally develop these scientific advances in other animal species for multiple purposes,” said Sammartino.

The details of the work will be published next month in the journal <a href="https://www.genome.gov/10004765/CloningEmbryonic-Stem-Cells">Cloning and Stem Cells</a>.

Scientists at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_University_of_San_Juan">Institute of Automatics of the National University of San Juan</a> are teaching mobile robots how to keep from colliding with humans by showing them how to respect our personal space. 

"Humans respect social zones during different kinds of interactions," said study co-author Daniel Herrera. He documented how the specific conditions of different tasks and situations influence the distance of social zones. Personal preferences and cultural differences also factor into these expectations.

"When a robot follows a human as part of a formation, it is supposed that it must also respect these social zones to improve its social acceptance,” explained Herrera.

The researchers used impedance control in an effort to regulate the social dynamics between the robot's movements and its interactions. To do this, the experts first established how human leaders and followers interact in a situation that has clear boundaries.

The feedback used by humans which encourages others to adjust their actions, such as letting someone know they are following too closely, became defined physical fields that were marked as social forces.

The research team equipped a robot with knowledge of these accepted behaviors, including the estimated social forces. The programmed robot then followed a human within the same defined borders - without disrupting the social forces defined by the human interactions.

"Under the hypothesis that moving like human will be acceptable by humans, it is believed that the proposed control improves the social acceptance of the robot for this kind of interaction," said Herrera.

The researchers believe that robots are more likely to be accepted if they can be programmed to respond like humans and also respect humans in social interactions. In this study, the robot followed just like a human, avoiding the leader's personal space.

"The results show that the robot is capable of emulating the previously identified impedance and, consequently, it is believed that the proposed control can improve the social acceptance by being able to imitate this human-human dynamic behavior,” explained Herrera.

The study is published in the <a href="https://www.ieee.org/membership-catalog/productdetail/showProductDetailPage.html?product=PER284-EPC">Journal of Automatica Sinica</a> (JAS), a joint publication of the IEEE and Chinese Association of Automation.

German scientists may have finally solved the mystery of what part of the brain recognizes human voices. The researchers are reporting that the area of the brain responsible for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/politicians-voice-impacts-success/">voice</a> recognition is a small region known as the superior temporal gyrus (STG).

The STG is part of the right posterior temporal lobe, which is one of the four major lobes in the brain. Claudia Roswandowitz is a researcher at the <a href="https://www.mpg.de/149614/kognition_neuro">Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences</a> and the lead author of the study.

Roswandowitz teamed up with other experts from the research group <a href="http://www.cbs.mpg.de/independent-research-groups/human-communication">Neural Mechanisms of Human Communication</a> for the investigation. The study was focused on 58 individuals with brain injuries in an effort to examine their ability to learn and recognize voices.

“Very valid statements about which brain areas are responsible for which functions are derived from investigations in patients with lesions,” explained Roswandowitz.

The <a href="http://www.cbs.mpg.de/voice-recognition-in-the-brain">study</a> revealed that patients with damage to the right posterior temporal lobe had trouble identifying the voices of other people, and individuals who had suffered from a stroke had even more difficulty.

Overall, 9 percent of the patients examined had difficulty in distinguishing one voice from another. The results of the study indicate that this particular region of the brain is critical in voice recognition. 

“These findings improve our understanding of how the brain identifies voices and provide the basis in the search for effective therapies for those affected by phonagnosia, a fairly common deficit which is sometimes present from birth but especially after a stroke,” said Roswandowitz.

“In our studies nine percent of the participants reported suffering from difficulties in recognizing voices, a problem that is almost unheard of in the medical sector.Thus, we have to raise awareness of this matter.”

An odor can trigger memories and emotions from experiences long ago, and neuroscientists from the <a href="http://www.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/index_en.htm">Ruhr-Universität Bochum</a> set out to determine which region of the brain stores long-term memories of scents. They discovered that an area of the olfactory brain called the piriform cortex plays a role in saving memories, yet it does not operate alone.

“It is known that the piriform cortex is able to temporarily store olfactory memories," said study co-author Christina Strauch. “We wanted to know, if that applies to long-term memories as well.”

A biological process known as synaptic plasticity alters communication between neurons found in the brain. These synaptic changes contribute to memory and learning by storing new information on the brain's memory structures.

Through experimentation in mice, the researchers investigated if the piriform cortex is capable of expressing synaptic plasticity. They also wanted to examine whether synaptic changes lasted for more than four hours, which would indicate that long-term memory had been established.

The experts used electrical impulses in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/salad-vegetables-brain-young/">brain</a> with varying frequencies and intensities to emulate processes that trigger the encoding of an olfactory sensation as a memory. 

It is known that these procedures can produce lasting effects in the hippocampus, which is another region of the brain responsible for long term memories. Surprisingly, the protocols did not induce synaptic plasticity in the piriform cortex.

Next, the scientists set out to determine whether the piriform cortex needs to be instructed to create a long-term memory. To do so, they stimulated a brain area called the orbitofrontal cortex, which is responsible for the recognition of sensory experiences. This stimulation resulted in synaptic change in the piriform cortex. 

“Our study shows that the piriform cortex is indeed able to serve as an archive for long-term memories,” said Strauch. “But it needs instruction from the orbitofrontal cortex - a higher brain area - indicating that an event is to be stored as a long-term memory.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://academic.oup.com/cercor">Cerebral Cortex</a>.

On Halloween in 2015, an asteroid passed by Earth that looked remarkably like a skull. Experts are reporting that the comet will appear again in November of next year.

The “Halloween asteroid” flew past the planet at an uncomfortably close distance of  300,000 miles, which is just a little bit more than the distance from the Earth to the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/moon-formed-earth-collided/">moon</a>. On its next visit, the comet is projected to fly by much farther, at about 105 Earth-moon distances.

The asteroid, which is officially named 2015 TB145, was first spotted by <a href="https://panstarrs.stsci.edu/">Pan-STARRS</a>, a panoramic survey telescope at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii. 

Scientists observing the rock with <a href="http://irtfweb.ifa.hawaii.edu/">NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility</a> (IRTF) have determined that the asteroid is more than likely “a dead comet that has shed its volatiles after numerous passes around the sun.” 

"The IRTF data may indicate that the object might be a dead comet, but in the Arecibo images it appears to have donned a skull costume for its Halloween flyby," <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/halloween-skies-to-include-dead-comet-flyby">said</a> IRTF program scientist Kelly Fast.

The experts estimate that the rock measures about 2,100 feet across and is covered in molecules that prevent it from reflecting much light.

“We found that the object reflects about six percent of the light it receives from the sun,” said Vishnu Reddy, a research scientist at the <a href="https://www.psi.edu/">Planetary Science Institute</a>. 

“That is similar to fresh asphalt, and while here on Earth we think that is pretty dark, it is brighter than a typical comet which reflects only 3 to 5 percent of the light. That suggests it could be cometary in origin - but as there is no coma evident, the conclusion is it is a dead comet.”

Because of its size and its orbital path, the comet has been classified by NASA as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA).

A team of scientists, including astrophysicist Pablo Santos-Sanz from the <a href="http://www.iaa.es/en">Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia</a>, published a paper about the asteroid earlier this year in the journal <a href="https://www.aanda.org/">Astronomy &amp; Astrophysics</a>.

Spooky skull-shaped asteroid coming back to haunt Earth next year

On Halloween in 2015, an asteroid passed by Earth that...

It has been theorized that the moon was created by a giant protoplanet called Theia smashing into the Earth and creating debris that orbited the planet until it came together to form our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/debris-moons-formation-earth/">moon</a>. But now scientists are saying that this object may have been far smaller than previously thought.

Up until now, astronomers were unsure of how the moon and Earth were both chemically identical. This finding led to two ideas, which put forth dramatically different masses for the impact object. In one idea, two half-Earths came together to form the Earth-moon system. In the second idea, Theia was a small, high-velocity projectile that struck the larger, faster-spinning young Earth.

Researchers led by James Badro at the Paris Institute of Earth Physics tested more than two billion combinations of parameters in order to solve the mystery of how the moon was formed. Ultimately, they determined that the Earth was struck by an object about one-tenth the mass of the planet. Any impactor larger than 15 percent of the mass of Earth was unable to reproduce the chemistry we see in Earth’s mantle. 

A different study also recently found that following the creation of the moon, the Earth was bombarded by smaller planets that introduced several precious elements to our planet, such as gold, silver, and platinum. This was known as the giant-impact hypothesis, or the Big Splash.

A simulation run by researchers at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado has recently found that after this massive impact, there was a long period during which leftover mini planets called planetesimals continually impacted the Earth. These objects varied in size from a grain of sand to rocks 3,000 kilometers across. This bombardment was called “late accretion,” and the planetesimals are thought to have come together to form Earth and other planets.

“We modelled the massive collisions and how metals and silicates were integrated into Earth during this ‘late accretion stage,’” says lead author, Dr. Simone Marchi, “which lasted for hundreds of millions of years after the Moon formed. “Based on our simulations, the late accretion mass delivered to Earth may be significantly greater than previously thought, with important consequences for the earliest evolution of our planet.”

While previous studies suggested that materials from planetesimals made up roughly half a percent of the Earth’s current mass, this new study shows that late accretion may have inolved large, differentiated projectiles that may have concentrated certain elements primarily within their metallic cores. So substantial portions of a large planetismal’s core could have assimilated into the Earth’s core, or richocheted back into space and escaped becoming integrated into our planet.

Both of these outcomes reduce the amount of material added by planetismals to the Earth’s mantle, which means that two to five times more material may have impacted the planet than previously thought. “These anomalies were problematic for lunar origin models that imply a well-mixed mantle following the giant impact,” the authors explain. “We propose that at least some of these rocks may have been produced long after the Moon-forming impact, during late accretion.”

Regardless, these studies show that there is still much to be discovered about the origins of the moon, as well as the origins of our own planet.

The “anti-smog gun” rapidly shoots out water droplets intended to flush pollutants out of the air. Some experts say this is not tackling the source of the problem and that infrastructural changes are what is really needed.

New Delhi is one of the most polluted regions of the world. Airborne particles and chemicals form toxic smog that lingers over the city, which is home to 19 million people. It has been reported that breathing the air when the smog is at its worst is roughly equivalent to smoking 50 cigarettes a day.

In eastern New Delhi, Anand Vihar is an area which borders an industrial zone and often has the worst quality of air. According to the U.S. Embassy, levels of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 registered 380 in Anand Vihar, which is more than 15 times the level that the <a href="http://www.who.int/">World Health Organization</a> has deemed as “safe.”

The Department of Environment and the <a href="https://www.dpcc.delhigovt.nic.in/">Delhi Pollution Control Committee</a> are testing out the water mist cannon in Anand Vihar. The machine is hooked up to a water tank and mounted onto a truck, shooting out atomized water up to 230 feet in the air. The goal is to mimic the air cleaning effects of rain and bring dust particles to the ground.

Delhi’s environment minister Imran Hussain said, “If it proves to be successful, then we will roll these out on Delhi’s streets as soon as possible.”

Anumita Roy Chowdhury is Executive Director of the <a href="http://www.cseindia.org/">Centre for Science and Environment</a> (CSE). Chowdhury and other experts have pointed out that the water mist cannon does not provide a long-term solution.

“This can be an instant measure for local effect, especially if there are local gross dust generators,” said Chowdhury. “However, a more sustained and long-term measure is needed to bring systemic changes.”

India has launched a new weapon to combat air pollution....

In Antarctica, scientists have just discovered the bones of a 150 million-year-old giant – a plesiosaur, which is now the first of its species located in Antarctica, and the oldest creature ever found on the continent.

Plesiosaur’s had a gigantic body – up to 39 feet long, with four powerful flippers and a long, snake-like neck. Oddly enough, they look a lot like the fabled Loch Ness Monster, which is said to still live in a lake in Scotland. The plesiosaur family was quite diverse, and includes a number of unique species. 

The remains were found at the tip of the continent where, according to paleontologist Soledad Cavalli, “you can find a great diversity of fish, ammonites, some bivalves, but we did not expect to find such an ancient plesiosaur.” Cavalli continues, “The discovery is pretty extraordinary, because the rock types at the site weren’t thought conducive to the preservation of bones, like the vertebrae of this marine reptile.”

The first documented discovery of a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/plesiosaurs-survived-mass-extinction/">plesiosaur</a> skeleton was published in 1719 by William Stukeley, an English antiquarian. Since that time, hundreds of fossils have led to scientists getting a better understanding of this enormous animal of the past. This month alone, this discovery in Antarctica likely takes a backseat to an earlier discovery of the oldest plesiosaur specimen ever found. 

These living giants survived with dinosaurs from the Jurassic period until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. It is believed that the last of these creatures died roughly 66 million years ago, when an asteroid collided with the Earth. Luckily for us, there are many more skeletons to find.

The rise of self-driving <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/self-driving-cars-ethical-decisions/">cars</a> has been occurring more in the public sphere over the last few years, with companies like Tesla and Google rising to the forefront. But there have been questions of safety concerns with this new technology. 

A recent study from <a href="http://web.mit.edu">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a> (MIT) highlights a potential breakthrough in improving the safety of self-driving cars.

In their paper published in IEEE Access, members of the Camera Culture group at MIT’s Media Lab discuss their new approach to time-of-flight imaging – an approach that measures distance by analyzing the time it takes light projected into a scene to bounce back to a sensor. 

The team’s new approach increases the depth resolution by 1,000-fold, which is the type of resolution needed to make self-driving cars practical. Furthermore, their technology could allow for accurate distance measurements through fog, which has been a significant obstacle in the development of these vehicles.

PhD student and first author of the paper, Achuta Kadambi, explains why increasing the resolution is so important:

“As you increase the range, your resolution goes down exponentially. Let’s say you have a long-range scenario, and you want your car to detect an object further away so it can make a fast update decision. You may have started at 1 centimeter, but now you’re back down to [a resolution of] a foot or even 5 feet. And if you make a mistake, it could lead to loss of life.”

However, the MIT team’s new system at a distance of 2 meters has a depth resolution of a whopping (or tiny) 3 micrometers. And at 500 meters, the system theoretically would have a depth resolution of only a centimeter. This is an enormous difference compared to the systems that are currently in place.

Fog has been an issue for these time-of-flight systems in the past, as it scatters light and deflects returning light signals so that the arrive back to the sensor late and at odd angles. The researchers are currently working on a new gigahertz optical system that combines the ideas of interferometry, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and the principles of acoustics. This system has been shown in theoretical analyses to produce a usable signal in the presence of fog.

Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
