Astronomers have discovered a hidden population of quasars - supermassive black holes blazing from the universe’s childhood - wrapped in cosmic dust.



Using a clever one-two punch of telescopes, researchers first flagged suspiciously luminous galaxies with Japan’s <a href="https://subarutelescope.org/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Subaru Telescope</a>, then aimed NASA’s <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/mission/webb/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Webb Space Telescope</a> (JWST) at them to see what the dust was concealed.



The payoff: seven objects blazing like quasars less than a billion years after the Big Bang, but so dust-shrouded that earlier surveys had missed them.



It’s the first time astronomers have confirmed bright, dust-obscured quasars at such early times. The result effectively doubles the census of luminous quasars from the “Cosmic Dawn,” suggesting voracious <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/astronomers-think-a-black-hole-may-explode-soon-and-theyre-not-going-to-miss-it/">black holes</a> were at least twice as common then as we thought.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-quasars-regulate-star-birth">Quasars regulate star birth</h2>



Nearly every large galaxy today harbors a supermassive black hole at its center. Most lie quiet, but when gas spirals in, friction heats the material to extraordinary temperatures, and the black hole lights up as a quasar - outshining its entire galaxy.



That storm of radiation can blow out or heat gas, regulating how stars form. In other words, to understand how galaxies came to be, you need to understand their central black holes.



There’s a lingering puzzle, though: supermassive black holes were already in place very early on. Finding more of them at Cosmic Dawn sharpens the question of how they formed so fast - did they grow from many small “seeds” left by the first stars, or collapse directly from large gas clouds under special conditions?



A key clue is how many existed. If luminous quasars were more common than previously realized, rapid black hole growth may have been widespread rather than rare.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cosmic-fog-conceals-quasars">Cosmic fog conceals quasars</h2>



Historically, quasar searches relied on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/neanderthals-vanished-from-uv-rays-no-clothes-homo-sapiens-adapted/">ultraviolet light</a>, which early quasars emit in abundance. Thanks to the expansion of the universe, that UV appears to us as visible light. The catch? Ultraviolet is easily absorbed by dust, and young galaxies are dusty places. If a quasar sits inside a dusty host, much of its UV never escapes.



That’s why the team changed tactics. They started with the Subaru Telescope’s Hyper Suprime-Cam survey (HSC-SSP), which had already revealed a trove of unusually bright galaxies in the distant universe. But those galaxies lacked the telltale “broad emission lines” that usually confirm an active black hole.



Gas racing around the black hole at thousands of miles per second creates broad lines; their width is a smoking gun.



Enter JWST. Because infrared light passes through dust far better than ultraviolet, JWST’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) can look where older instruments were effectively blind.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-seven-hidden-quasars-light-up"><a></a>Seven hidden quasars light up</h2>



Between July 2023 and October 2024, the team used NIRSpec to take spectra of 11 of the brightest Subaru-selected galaxies. In seven of them, the broad emission lines popped - undeniable signatures of quasars.



These are the first confirmed examples of dust-obscured but luminous quasars at <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ground-based-telescopes-detect-light-from-the-cosmic-dawn/">Cosmic Dawn</a>. JWST has recently found a menagerie of fainter, compact objects nicknamed “Little Red Dots,” many of which host black holes. These are dimmer than the classic early quasars. The new finds are the full-power kind - just veiled.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-brightness-like-no-other">Brightness like no other</h2>



Peering into the spectra, the researchers estimated that each newly revealed quasar shines with the energy of a few trillion suns. They are powered by black holes a few billion times the mass of the Sun. That makes them comparable to the brightest unobscured quasars already known from the same era.



The difference comes from dust. It blocks about 70 percent of visible light and nearly all ultraviolet - 99.9 percent - before escape. No wonder earlier UV-based searches overlooked them.



“This discovery was only possible with the unique combination of two powerful telescopes," said lead author Yoshiki Matsuoka from <a href="https://www.ehime-u.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ehime University</a>. "The Subaru Telescope’s wide and sensitive survey allowed us to spot rare, luminous galaxies, and JWST was able to catch the faint infrared light from the hidden quasars." 



"This shows how effective the approach of ‘Discover with Subaru Telescope, explore with James Webb’ can be.” 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-doubling-the-headcount-at-cosmic-dawn"><a></a>Doubling the headcount at Cosmic Dawn</h2>



By comparing how many dust-obscured quasars they found with the tally of previously known, unobscured ones, the team concluded that bright quasars in the early universe are at least twice as common as previously thought.



That jump in number density has ripple effects. Black hole growth, galaxy evolution, and even the reionization of the universe all depend on how much quasar light was present and how it shaped its surroundings.



A richer, dustier population of early quasars also hints that black hole feeding frenzies often unfolded inside messy, rapidly forming galaxies - exactly the kind of environments where dust would thrive.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-peering-deeper-with-alma">Peering deeper with ALMA</h2>



Finding the hidden quasars is step one. Now the team wants to see how they differ - if at all - from their dust-free cousins. 



JWST’s spectra contain a forest of emission lines from different elements; their relative strengths and shapes act like diagnostic tools for the temperature, density, and motion of gas near the black hole. Are the obscured quasars blasting stronger winds? Are they embedded in thicker, more turbulent cocoons?



The researchers will also use <a href="https://www.almaobservatory.org/en/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ALMA</a>, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, to map cold gas and dust in the host galaxies. ALMA can reveal if galaxies hold <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/black-hole-is-starving-its-host-galaxy-of-star-forming-fuel/">star-forming gas</a>, how it moves, and whether quasars stir or expel it.



In parallel, the team plans to expand the hunt to less luminous galaxies to see how far down the iceberg of hidden black holes goes. A new JWST program is already on the calendar, with observations slated to begin early next year.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-crowded-early-cosmos">A crowded early cosmos</h2>



Quasars are nature’s lighthouses, and the earliest ones are beacons from a time when the first <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/galaxies-are-much-bigger-than-we-originally-believed-gas-clouds/">galaxies</a> were assembling.



By switching to infrared eyes and following up the brightest dusty suspects, astronomers have revealed a whole cohort of lighthouses we didn’t know were there. The universe at a billion years old just got more crowded - and a lot more interesting.



The study is published in <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/1538-4357/addf4e" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Astrophysical Journal</a>.

Quasars cloaked in dust found less than a billion years after Big Bang

Using a clever one-two punch of telescopes, researchers first flagged suspiciously luminous galaxies with Japan’s Subaru Telescope, then aimed NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) at them to see what the dust was concealed. The payoff: seven objects blazing like quasars less than a billion years after the Big Bang, but so dust-shrouded that earlier surveys had missed them. It’s the first time astronomers have...

A recent Pew Research Center study found that almost half of Americans surveyed (46%) say that they could not live without their smartphones. 

To the average American, this finding likely isn’t very surprising. You don’t have to go far in public to see a wide variety of people with their heads down staring at their phone. However, there has been a growing concern that young people may be spending too much time looking at their phones instead of interacting with those around them. This has led scientists to try to determine the effects this may have on the growing brain.

Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), <a href="http://www.korea.edu/">Korea University</a>’s professor of neuroradiology Dr. Hyung Suk Seo and his colleagues attempted to gain insight into the brains of smartphone- and internet-addicted teenagers.

Their study analyzed the brains of 38 young people with a mean age of 15.5 years. Half of those surveyed had been diagnosed with internet or <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/smartphones-kids-less-sleep/">smartphone</a> addiction, while the other half were controls. As part of the study, twelve of the addicted participants received nine weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy, modified from a cognitive therapy program for gaming addiction.

The researchers used standardized internet and smartphone addiction tests to measure the severity of internet addiction amongst the subjects. Questions on these tests revolved around the extent to which internet and smartphone use affects daily routines, productivity, social life, sleeping patterns, and feelings. The higher a participant scored on the tests, the more severe their addiction. The results showed that addicted teenagers had significantly higher scores in depression, anxiety, insomnia severity, and impulsivity.

Prior to the behavioral therapy, the researchers performed MRS exams on addicted youth and a single MRS study on the control patients in order to measure levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). They also measured levels of glutamate-glutamine (Glx). GABA is a neurotransmitter in the brain that inhibits or slows down brain signals, while Glx is a neurotransmitter that causes neurons to become more electrically excited.

The MRS results revealed that the ratio of GABA to Glx was significantly increased in the anterior cingulate cortex of smartphone- and internet-addicted youth prior to therapy when compared to the healthy controls. According to Dr. Seo, the ratios of GABA to creatine and GABA to glutamate were significantly correlated to clinical scales of internet and smartphone addictions, anxiety, and depression. Having too much GABA is linked to side effects such as drowsiness and anxiety.

More research will need to be done in order to flesh out the clinical implications of this study. However, Dr. Seo believes that the increased GABA in the cingulate gyrus shown in smartphone and internet addicts could be related to the functional loss of integration and regulation of processing in the cognitive and emotional neural network. 

Luckily, the GABA to Glx ratios in addicted youth dropped significantly or returned to normal levels after cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Seo believes that understanding the pathophysiology behind why addiction leads to these problems will help us better understand and treat these 21st century addictions.

Addiction to smartphones causes imbalances in your brain

Researchers have tracked the movement of insecticide resistance across Africa by studying the DNA of mosquitoes. The analysis, which is the largest genetic study of insects to date, has identified several insecticide resistance genes that are rapidly progressing.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/video/satellites-predict-malaria-outbreaks/">Malaria</a>, which is spread by Anopheles mosquitoes, infects more than 200 million people every year. In 2015, malaria was to blame for the deaths of 429,000 people, with most fatalities occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

Insecticides have helped control the spread of malaria since 2000, but the advancing insecticide resistance in mosquitoes is thwarting these efforts. In an attempt to understand how mosquitoes are evolving this resistance so quickly, researchers sequenced the DNA of 765 wild Anopheles mosquitoes from 15 locations in eight African countries.

By examining the genome of each mosquito, the experts discovered that wild mosquitoes are genetically far more diverse than had been previously realized. Overall, the researchers found 52 million differences among the mosquito genomes, and such high genetic diversity promotes rapid evolution.

Dr. Mara Lawniczak from the <a href="http://www.sanger.ac.uk/">Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute</a> is one of the study’s corresponding authors. 

"The diversity of mosquito genomes was far greater than we expected,” said Dr. Lawniczak. “Such high levels of genetic variation poise mosquito populations to rapidly evolve in response to our efforts to control them whether that be with insecticides or any other control measure, including gene drive."

Analysis of the mosquito genomes also revealed rapid evolution of several genes that had previously been linked to insecticide resistance. Within those genes, the researchers identified many previously-unknown genetic variants that may be causing the resistance. 

The research team established that the mosquitoes are spreading these genetic variants across the entire continent of Africa through migration.

Professor Martin Donnelly from the <a href="http://www.lstmed.ac.uk/">Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine</a> is a corresponding author of the study. 

"We know that mosquito populations are rapidly evolving resistance to insecticides, which is a serious threat to the future of malaria control in Africa,” said Professor Donnelly. “We have been able to see that a diverse array of genes linked to insecticide resistance are under very strong selection, confirming that they are playing an important role in the evolution of insecticide resistance in natural mosquito populations. Our study highlights the severe challenges facing public efforts to control mosquitoes and to manage and limit insecticide resistance."

Alistair Miles from the <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/">University of Oxford</a> and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is the study’s lead author.

"The data we have generated are a unique resource for studying how mosquito populations are responding to our current control efforts, and for designing better technologies and strategies for mosquito control in the future,” said Miles. “More data will be needed to fill in the geographical gaps and study how mosquito populations change over time and in response to specific control interventions. However, this study demonstrates a clear path towards building a new and much-needed source of intelligence to support the campaign to eradicate malaria in Africa."

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

When you notice your dog licking their lips, you might think it’s just because they’re hungry. But according to new research, dogs begin licking their mouths when confronted with an angry human face. 

The study was conducted by researchers from Brazil and the United Kingdom.

For the study, different dogs were filmed while being shown either angry or positive facial expressions and exposed to positive or negative sounds, some that were human and some that were from other dogs. 

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dogs-expressive-looking/">dogs</a> sat with handlers, and the camera was able to capture gestures, so the researchers knew exactly when the dogs responded to the faces. 

The researchers noted that when the dogs saw an angry human face, they would lick their mouths. 

“Mouth-licking was triggered by visual cues only (facial expressions),” said Natalia Albuquerque from the <a href="http://www5.usp.br/english/?lang=en">University of Sao Paulo</a>, the study’s lead author. “There was also a species effect, with dogs mouth-licking more often when looking at humans than at other dogs.” 

The results of the study shed light on how dogs interact with their owners and the world around them. Mouth licking for dogs is a direct response to negative emotions displayed humans. 

“Humans are known to be very visual in both intra and inter-species interactions, and because the vision of dogs is much poorer than humans, we often tend to think of them using their other sense to make sense of the world,” said Daniel Mills, co-author. “But these results indicate that dogs may be using the visual display of mouth-licking to facilitate dog-human communication in particular.”

An international team of researchers have discovered deep ocean cave-dwelling organisms that can survive off methane gas.

The discovery was made near Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the Ox Bel Ha cave network, where both saltwater and freshwater mix. 

A research team from Mexico, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the <a href="https://www.uaf.edu/">University of Alaska-Fairbanks</a>, and the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Survey</a> led by David Brankovits from <a href="http://www.tamug.edu/">Texas A&amp;M Galveston</a>, found organisms that survived off <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/global-warming-methane-bubbles/">methane</a> gas were a crucial part of the cave’s ecosystem. 

Studying the cave system was no easy feat. According to the to <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/news/mexico-s-yucatan-peninsula-reveals-a-cryptic-methane-fueled-ecosystem-flooded-caves">US Geological Survey</a>, this study was one of the most detailed surveys ever conducted for a cave ecosystem. 

The researchers used techniques from deep-sea vehicles so that they could best observe and analyze the underwater cave network.

The team found that some microbes were able to survive off methane gas in the water and organic material that had dissolved over time. 

“In the studied system, cave-adapted organisms exist where there is no sunlight, and virtually all food sources are present in dissolved forms,” said Brankovits. “Without the presence of microbes that can utilize methane and other dissolved energy sources, these animals could not live otherwise.”  

Brankovits wants to explore other cave systems that are similar to the Ox Bel Ha network because there is a high probability that additional methane consuming organisms also exist in those caves. 

Further research will need to be done to fully understand how cave ecosystems, especially in those passages without light and very little food, thrive. 

“Providing a model for the basic function of this globally-distributed ecosystem is an important contribution to coastal groundwater ecology and establishes a baseline for evaluating how sea level rise, seaside touristic development and other stressors will impact the viability of these lightless, food-poor systems,” said Tom Iliffe, and one of the most experienced cave divers in the world and a member of the research team.

Prehistoric women who lived during the Neolithic Era and the Bronze Age performed considerable physical labor, from tilling the soil for crops to grinding grain into flour by hand.

A new study has revealed that life was so labor intensive during these times that prehistoric women had stronger arms than today’s top female rowing athletes. 

The study was conducted by researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> and published in the journal Science Advances. 

It’s the first study of its kind to compare the bone strength in prehistoric women to modern women. Previous studies have made similar comparisons but usually to men, and male bones show wear and strain differently. 

“By interpreting women's bones in a female-specific context we can start to see how intensive, variable and laborious their behaviours were, hinting at a hidden history of women's work over thousands of years,” said Alison Macintosh, the lead author. 

The researchers analyzed arm and leg bones of female participants using a small CT scanner. The participants represented a wide range of physical fitness and sedentary lifestyles. 

Among the participants were members of the <a href="http://cuwbc.org.uk/">Cambridge University Women’s Boat Club</a>, who trained twice a day and rowed an average of 120 kilometers a week. 

The CT scans were compared to bones scans of women from early eras when agriculture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/farming-changes-greenhouse-gases/">farming</a> were a prominent part of daily life. 

The reason the researchers chose to analyze bone strength is that bones can tell a great deal about the physical strains they’ve been subjected to. 

“It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the rigours we put our bodies through,” said Macintosh. “Physical impact and muscle activity both put strain on bone, called loading. The bone reacts by changing in shape, curvature, thickness and density over time to accommodate repeated strain.” 

The researchers found that Neolithic women from 7,000 years ago had arms bones that were 11 to 16 percent stronger than the rowers. 

Women in the Bronze Age had arm bones that were nine to thirteen percent stronger than the rowers. 

The differences in arm strength make sense, even when you factor in the physical stamina of today’s rowing athletes. Prehistoric women spent much of their time tilling the soil by hand, taking care of livestock, and grinding grain into flour for hours at a time. 

“We can't say specifically what behaviours were causing the bone loading we found. However, a major activity in early agriculture was converting grain into flour, and this was likely performed by women,” said Macintosh.

The study gives a more accurate picture of what life was like for prehistoric women, fairly demonstrating their contribution to day to day work thousands of years ago.

The rise of sea-levels as a result of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-driving-climate-change/">climate change</a> carries many consequences, particularly for coastal areas and those living in them. But the wide-scale flooding that appears imminent in our future won’t just impact our present, it will also destroy some of our past.

According to a study published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>, sea-level rise may impact a great number of archaeological and historic sites, cemeteries, and landscapes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the southeastern United States. 

David Anderson of the <a href="https://www.utk.edu/">University of Tennessee</a> and his colleagues estimated the impact of sea-level rise on archaeological sites by analyzing data from the Digital Index of North American Archaeology (DINNA). DINAA pulls together archaeological and historical data sets from numerous sources developed over the past century. This provides a comprehensive window into the history of human settlement for both research communities and the general public today.

The results of the study show that if projected trends in sea-level rise continue, over 13,000 recorded archaeological sites in the southeast alone may be submerged in the next 100 years. This includes over 1,000 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places as important cultural properties – not to mention how many sites will be lost that have yet to be discovered.

Studies such as this – which rely on large linked data sets like DINAA – are essential to developing plans for sampling, triage, and mitigation efforts across entire regions. The data that is gathered and analyzed is essential for forecasting our future and making public policy decisions about the consequences of man-made climate change. “Developing informatics capabilities at regional and continental scales like DINAA is essential if we are to effectively plan for, and help mitigate, this loss of human history,” explains Anderson.

Now that we have access to this data and the scientists to analyze it, the push for action and results should be the logical next step.

Sea-level rise may destroy over 13,000 U.S. archaeological sites

Although dinosaurs have long been extinct, their relatives live on amongst us – many even as pets. That’s because birds are a direct descendant of a group of feathered, carnivorous dinosaurs known as paravians. Now, a new study has discovered previously unknown details about dinosaur feathers, allowing scientists to build possibly the most accurate depiction of any dinosaur species ever.

Researchers from the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> analyzed an exceptionally preserved fossil of a crow-sized paravian dinosaur known as Anchiornis. At high resolution, the scientists compared fossilized feathers to those of other dinosaurs and extinct bird species. They found that the feathers around the body of Anchiornis – which are known as contour feathers – showed a primitive and now extinct feather form. This form consists of a short quill with long, flexible, independent barbs jutting from the quill at low angles to form two vanes and a forked feather shape. 

The researchers believe that these feathers would have given the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/asteroid-dinosaurs/">dinosaur</a> a “fluffy” appearance compared to the streamlined bodies of modern flying birds. While modern birds have tightly-zipped vanes forming continuous surfaces, Anchiornis’s unzipped feathers could have affected the species’ ability to repel water and control its body temperature. Furthermore, the more fluffy plumage would have also increased drag when the Anchiornis glided and would have hindered the feather’s ability to form a lift surface.

It was also observed that Anchiornis had four wings, as did some other paravians. They had long feathers on their legs as well as their arms, and elongated feathers that formed a fringe around their tail. These extra feathers increased surface-area, likely allowing for gliding before powered flight ever evolved.

In order to reconstruct an accurate depiction of this extinct species, the researchers called upon scientific illustrator Rebecca Gelernter to draw the animal as it would’ve appeared while alive. The resulting piece represents a major shift in dinosaur depictions and incorporates previous research as well.

“The novel aspects of the wing and contour feathers, as well as fully-feathered hands and feet, are added to the depiction,” says Evan Saitta of the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences and School of Biological Sciences. “Overall, our study provides some new insight into the appearance of dinosaurs, their behavior and physiology, and the evolution of feathers, birds, and powered flight.”

Based on geological records from the last 100,000 years, scientists have determined that volcanic “super-eruptions” occur much more frequently than previously realized. These massive explosions are capable of producing over 1,000 gigatons of mass, covering entire continents with ash, and changing weather patterns for decades.

Scientists from the <a href="http://www.bristol.ac.uk/">University of Bristol</a> set out to calculate how many thousands of years separate <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstone-supervolcano-eruption/">super-eruptions</a> based on their occurrence in the past. They determined that the average time between these events is not much longer than 12,000 years, the known age of our civilization.

"The previous estimate, made in 2004, was that super-eruptions occurred on average every 45 - 714 thousand years, comfortably longer than our civilization,” said study co-author Jonathan Rougier. "But in our paper just published, we re-estimate this range as 5.2 - 48 thousand years, with a best guess value of 17 thousand years."

The researchers found that the two most recent super-eruptions happened somewhere between 20 and 30 thousand years ago.

"On balance, we have been slightly lucky not to experience any super-eruptions since then,” said Rougier. "But it is important to appreciate that the absence of super-eruptions in the last 20 thousand years does not imply that one is overdue. Nature is not that regular.”


Rougier does warn, however, that volcanoes pose more of a threat to civilization than what has been expected. Regardless, there is is not an urgent need to prepare for a super-eruption with so many other issues that need to be addressed.

Rougier says that this study will have a positive influence on how future investigations of past extreme events are conducted. 

"As well as improving our understanding of global volcanism, our paper develops relatively simple techniques to analyse incomplete and error-prone geological and historical records of rare events,” said Rougier.”These difficulties are ubiquitous in geohazards, and we expect our approach will be used for reappraising other types of hazard, such as earthquakes."

The study is published in <a href="https://www.journals.elsevier.com/earth-and-planetary-science-letters">Earth and Planetary Science Letters</a>.

The next volcano super-eruption could happen sooner than expected

With today's changing climate conditions, certain species of animals will be pushed into extinction if trophy hunting and other activities which target strong males are not properly managed.

Researchers from <a href="http://www.qmul.ac.uk/">Queen Mary University of London</a> (QMUL) predict that the harvesting of even five percent of robust males may be enough to lead to extinction.

<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hunting-reduces-populations/">Hunters</a> target male animals with extravagant features such as large horns or antlers. These individuals are often equipped with the healthiest genes, which are removed from the population once they are killed.

"This demonstration that trophy hunting can potentially push otherwise resilient populations to extinction when the environment changes is concerning,” said lead author Dr. Rob Knell. “Because these high-quality males with large secondary sexual traits tend to father a high proportion of the offspring, their 'good genes' can spread rapidly, so populations of strongly sexually selected animals can adapt quickly to new environments. Removing these males reverses this effect and could have serious and unintended consequences.”

Dr. Knell explained, "We found that 'selective harvest' has little effect when the environment is relatively constant, but environmental change is now a dangerous reality across the globe for considerable numbers of species."

In Sub-Saharan Africa, more land is conserved for hunting than is protected in national parks. Trophy hunting is an important industry that is thought to have little impact on animal populations. But now, the researchers have shown that damage caused by this recreational sport may be irreparable in a changing environment.

The research team used computer simulation to forecast the outcome of selectively targeting males and to examine how the climate influences this outcome. Based on their findings, the authors recommend restricting hunting to older males who have already reproduced.

"Our results clearly show that age restrictions on harvest which allow males to breed before they are taken is effective at reducing the impact of selective harvest on adapting populations,” said Dr. Knell. "When properly regulated trophy hunting can be a powerful force for conservation which is why we're suggesting a different management approach as opposed to calling for a ban."

When researchers set out to gain a better understanding of how American gun owners perceive firearm ownership, they found that white men who are financially stressed are more likely to cling to their guns for moral support.

A research team at <a href="https://www.baylor.edu/">Baylor University</a> analyzed data on gun owners from across the United States and established a link between economic stress and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higher-suicide-rates-rural-areas/">gun</a> ownership. White males who feel that their financial security is threatened often develop an emotional attachment to their firearms.

In addition, the experts determined that this particular group of white males is more likely to consider violence against the United States government as being justified.

Paul Froese is a Sociology professor at Baylor and co-author of the study.

“This speaks to the belief in some ‘dark state’ within the government which needs fighting,” said Froese. “What’s paradoxical is that white male gun owners in the U.S. see themselves as hyper-patriotic, but they are the first to say, ‘If the government impedes me, I have the moral and almost patriotic right to fight back.’”

Nonwhite gun owners, however, place much less value on their guns in times of financial hardship, according to the study authors. Nonwhites are also less inclined to justify violence against the government.

Froese explains that these individuals have most likely “developed different coping mechanisms” to deal with economic stress.

The researchers used data from a Gallup poll of 1,572 Americans in January 2014, which included 577 gun owners. The participants were asked about the types of guns they owned, why they owned firearms, their attitudes toward gun policies, and their feelings on violence against the government.

The research team identified differences between gun owners and non-owners. They found that gun owners were more likely to be white, male, married, older, earn more, and live in rural areas. In addition, gun owners reported being more conservative, attending church regularly, and feeling more alienated from society compared to those individuals who did not own guns.

There were also notable differences among the gun owners when it came to their sense of authority.

“Simply owning a gun does not predict an individual will express anti-gun control opinions, but rather whether the person feels empowered by the gun,” said Froese. “The emotional and moral connection explains variation within the population of gun owners.”

The findings of the study are published in the journal <a href="https://academic.oup.com/socpro">Social Problems</a>.

A recent study reveals that marriage may actually lower a person's risk of getting dementia, while widowers and single adults are at a higher risk of developing the chronic disorder.

Researchers collected data from 15 relevant studies published through 2016. The experts analyzed the reports, which were based on over 800,000 participants from Europe, North and South America, and Asia, to determine whether there was a link between marital status and dementia risk.


After accounting for age and gender, the study showed that lifelong single adults were 42 percent more likely to develop <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dementia-expensive-families/">dementia</a>. The researchers pointed out that this single group has poorer overall health, which may help to explain the heightened risk.

However, studies based on single people born after 1927 showed that dementia risk was just 24 percent higher. This indicated that the health risk lessened across single adults over time, but the researchers have not identified the reason for this.

Widowers were found to be 20 percent more prone to dementia than married people, and the experts believe this may be partially attributed to the heightened stress levels caused by bereavement. These stress levels are linked to impaired nerve signaling and cognitive functioning.

According to the researchers, the connection between lower dementia risk and marriage strengthened as the study became more in depth. The team believes that married couples engage in healthier lifestyles, such as eating well and exercising more, which are associated with a lower risk of dementia.

While the findings of the study suggest that there are factors which reduce the chance that a person will develop dementia, the researchers pointed out that dementia is still not easily prevented.

"Therefore, ways of destigmatising dementia and producing dementia-friendly communities more accepting and embracing of the kinds of disruptions that dementia can produce should progress alongside biomedical and public health programs," said the study authors.

The research is published online in the <a href="http://jnnp.bmj.com/">Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery &amp; Psychiatry</a>.

Around the time that urban societies were developing in Egypt and Mesopotamia between 5,300 and 3,300 years ago, the Indus Civilization was also evolving. Scientists have long believed that the settlements of this era sprung up along the banks of a thriving river, but new evidence shows that a major Himalayan river central to the Indus Civilization was no longer active.

The Ghaggar-Hakra River in northwest <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/smoke-fog-northern-india/">India</a> and Pakistan is believed to have dried up due to changes in the climate or shifting tectonic plates. But, prior to this study, scientists did not know exactly when the river ceased. It was assumed that the Indus settlements depended on the river and developed around it.

However, a research team from <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/">Imperial College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.iitk.ac.in/">Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur</a> has now provided surprising evidence that the Ghaggar-Hakra was no longer flowing at the time the settlements of the Indus Civilization emerged. The findings of the study suggest that ancient urban societies did not depend exclusively on an active, flowing river system to flourish.

"The findings challenge our current understanding of how urbanization in many ancient civilizations began and grew in relation to natural resources,” said lead author Professor Sanjeev Gupta. “Contrary to current belief, it was the departure of a large river, rather than its arrival, that triggered the growth of Indus urban centers."

The researchers discovered that a major Himalayan river, the Sutlej River, once flowed in the tracks of the Ghaggar-Hakra River, but abruptly changed course about eight thousand years ago. By the time the Indus people settled into the region, there was only an abandoned large river valley.

The large impression in the ground left behind from the the Sutlej River collected water seasonally from monsoons, providing the Indus settlements with a temporary source of water.

"We now know that, given the right conditions, valleys that have lost their rivers can still serve as a water source,” said study co-author Rajiv Sinha. “The civilization would also not have been threatened by the risk of devastating floods that living next to a big river brings."

Since most previous research has been focused on the link between rivers drying up and the abandonment of ancient urban centers, the team believes this study may encourage archaeologists to take a new look at the development of settlements in early civilizations. The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.

The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.

The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.

Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.

"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
