Parents often ask the same question: what should I feed my baby first? Cereal, bananas, sweet potatoes, or something else? For years, advice has been vague. Scientists now suggest that blueberries may deserve a place on that list.



Blueberries are packed with color-rich compounds, fiber, and vitamins. Adults eat them for heart and brain health. Until now, though, no one had rigorously tested them in infants. A team at the University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz decided to change that.



The researchers designed a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Sixty-one babies between five and twelve months joined. Some received blueberry powder each day.



Others received a powder without blueberries. Parents mixed the powder into normal <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unstable-gut-microbes-can-worsen-child-malnutrition/">meals</a>. Nothing else in the routine had to change.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-linking-blueberries-and-allergies">Linking blueberries and allergies</h2>



By the end of the study, the blueberry group showed fewer allergy symptoms, especially respiratory ones. Inflammation markers also shifted. IL-13, a molecule tied to asthma and allergies, dropped. 



IL-10, known for calming the immune system, nudged upward. These results suggest blueberries encourage balance, not overreaction.



“For parents beginning to wean their infants, it’s incredibly difficult to find solid, research-backed advice on what <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/key-to-cutting-food-waste-is-in-our-daily-routines/">foods</a> to introduce,” said senior author Minghua Tang, PhD, adjoint associate professor of pediatrics at <a href="https://www.cuanschutz.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CU Anschutz</a>. 



“This study is a critical first step in filling that gap by offering real data on how a specific food like blueberries can improve your infant’s health.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-blueberries-protect-babies">How blueberries protect babies</h2>



Blueberries owe much of their power to anthocyanins, the pigments that give them a dark blue color. These compounds protect the gut lining, reduce inflammation, and discourage harmful bacteria. 



They also influence immune cells by turning down allergy-driving signals and boosting tolerance-building ones. In plain words, they help the immune system learn when to stay calm.



Infant gut bacteria shifted too. Beneficial groups such as Lactobacillus linked with more IL-10. Less friendly microbes like Citrobacter showed ties to IL-13. These shifts reveal how <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/everyday-kitchen-tool-that-could-be-leaching-toxins-into-your-food-polypropylene-cutting-board/">diet</a> influences microbes.



The pattern suggests blueberries push gut communities in directions that support calmer immune activity, reducing unnecessary inflammation, encouraging tolerance, and possibly lowering the chance of early allergy development in infants.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-blueberries-support-long-term-health">Blueberries support long-term health</h2>



Not every improvement lined up neatly. Some babies improved without clear biomarker changes, and some biomarker shifts didn’t translate directly into fewer symptoms. 



That mismatch highlights the complexity of the gut–immune connection. Diet seems to nudge the system, but it doesn’t act through one simple pathway.



“This research supports the idea that blueberries are not only safe for infants but also offer meaningful health benefits,” said Minghua Tang, who is also a researcher at the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and <a href="https://www.colostate.edu" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Colorado State University</a>.



“Just a few blueberries a day could make a difference in supporting long-term health. We view infancy as a critical window of opportunity and what we introduce during this time can have lasting effects as children grow.”



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-early-diet-and-allergy-risks">Early diet and allergy risks</h2>



Allergic conditions are on the rise worldwide. Eczema, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/simple-way-to-remove-microplastics-from-tap-water-home-faucet/">food</a> allergies, and asthma often appear in childhood and can persist into adulthood. Scientists increasingly believe that early diet plays a role in either fueling or calming these risks. 



Breastfeeding remains the gold standard, but once solids start, the choice of foods may also matter more than once thought. Blueberries now join a list of foods being tested for their ability to train the immune system during this vulnerable window.



Health agencies encourage introducing a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains around six months. Yet parents often hesitate, especially with foods they fear might trigger allergies. 



Research like this helps reduce uncertainty. It suggests that some foods not only avoid harm but may actively help protect against allergies when offered early in life.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-introducing-babies-to-blueberries">Introducing babies to blueberries </h2>



The team stresses this was an early trial. More infants, longer follow-ups, and fresh blueberries instead of powder are next on the agenda. Other foods rich in similar compounds may also help, but those studies still lie ahead.



For now, families can introduce blueberries safely once babies begin solids. Puree them for the youngest. Mash or slice them for older babies and toddlers to avoid choking. A handful here and there may help more than just nutrition - it could shape long-term health.

Drinking two alcoholic beverages a day, the average consumed by citizens of the European Union, raises the risk of developing colorectal cancer and other digestive cancers by 21 percent, according to a new study.

Heavy <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/even-light-drinking-damages-brain/">drinkers</a> who have more than four drinks per day, are at increased risk of pancreatic, liver, and gastric cancer, the study by <a href="https://www.ueg.eu/">United European Gastroenterology</a> said.

Those three cancers, along with colorectal and oesophageal cancer, cause almost three million deaths per year globally, the study said.

No EU countries were found to have “light” alcohol consumption (on average, less than 1 alcoholic drink per day per capita), the study said.

UEG is calling for a campaign to provide “clear and consistent information” about the health risks of drinking alcohol.

"One of the main challenges in addressing high drinking levels is how deeply embedded alcohol consumption is within the European society, both socially and culturally,” said Markus Peck, a digestive health expert and former secretary general of the <a href="https://www.easl.eu/">European Association of the Study of the Liver</a>. “Political action like minimum pricing and reducing access to alcohol needs to be taken now to prevent many future casualties. Research then has to follow to help generate data and allow us to fine-tune future political activity".

Higher levels of naturally produced testosterone in some elite female athletes give them a "significant" competitive edge in sports that depend on stamina and visual perception of spatial relationships, according to a new study.

At the <a href="https://www.iaaf.org/">International Association of Athletics Federations World</a> Championships in 2011 and 2013, women in the top third of measurements for free testosterone in their blood performed significantly better in the 400 m sprint, the 400 m hurdles, the 800 m hurdles, and the hammer throw and  pole vault, compared to women with the lowest levels of testosterone, the study said.

However, no similar pattern was observed in men with different testosterone levels.

The researchers suggest that their findings should be taken into account when judging eligibility for these events.

Some women naturally produce excess levels of male hormones, a condition known as hyperandrogenism, the study said.

The research was prompted by a challenge of IAFF regulations requiring women with hyperandrogenism to take hormone treatment to lower their testosterone levels before competing. The <a href="http://www.tas-cas.org/">Court of Arbitration for Sports</a> in 2015 ruled that the IAAF regulations should be suspended until is more is known on the topic

Since the new study was observational only, no firm conclusions can be drawn about cause and effect, the authors said. 

But the researchers suggest that women could benefit from the boost that testosterone gives to red cell production. The hormone enhances the availability of oxygen in tissues, and to visuospatial abilities, which are critical for throwing events, and possibly for racket, team, and acrobatic <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/effects-high-school-football-later/">sports.</a>

The study was published online in the <a href="http://bjsm.bmj.com/">British Journal of Sports Medicine</a>.

Naturally produced testosterone gives female athletes advantage

Modern cement concrete – typically known as “Portland” concrete – is made using rock aggregate along with sand and gravel particles that are intended to be inert. This means that some reactions with the cement paste amy form gels that expand and cause the concrete to crack. “This alkali-silica reaction occurs throughout the world and it’s one of the main causes of destruction of Portland cement concrete structures,” says <a href="https://www.utah.edu/">University of Utah</a> geologist Marie Jackson. When Jackson spent a sabbatical year in Rome, she noticed that Roman concrete was much more durable than our modern concrete. While there, she began study volcanic ash deposits, as she knew the Romans made their concrete by mixing volcanic ash with lime and seawater to make mortar, before introducing rock aggregate.

After returning, she and her colleagues began to further study the factors that caused this resilience in Roman concrete. The research team had noticed that modern marine concrete structures tend to fall apart within decades, while 2,000-year-old Roman piers and breakwaters still stand today – and are even stronger than when they were first built.

In the year A.D. 79, Roman author Pliny the Elder wrote in his Naturalis Historia that as concrete structures in harbors were exposed to the constant beating of saltwater <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/weather-patterns-cause-more-heat-waves/">waves</a>, they became “a single stone mass, impregnable to the waves and every day stronger.” And he wasn’t wrong.

Jackson and her colleagues discovered that seawater leaking into the concrete caused the growth of interlocking minerals within the structure, adding to the material’s cohesion. The combination of ash, water, and quicklime causes a “pozzolanic reaction,” which is named after the city of Pozzuoli in the Bay of Naples. 

Another factor the researchers found was that the mineral intergrowths between the aggregate and the mortar stop cracks from getting bigger. In contrast, the surfaces of nonreactive aggregates in Portland cement actually expedite the growth of cracks.

Through analysis of drill cores of Roman harbor concrete, they found that the seawater filtering through the concrete actually dissolved components of volcanic ash and led to new minerals growing from the highly alkaline mixture. The minerals that grew there were mainly Al-tobermorite (a rarely synthesized mineral) and phillipsite. Both minerals have silica-rich compositions, creating crystals that actually reinforce the cementing matrix.

Jackson was surprised by these findings, as this corrosion-like process would normally be a detriment to modern materials. “We’re looking at a system that’s contrary to everything one would not want in cement-based concrete,” she says. “We’re looking at a system that thrives in open chemical exchange with seawater.”

So now that we’ve found this ancient concrete that performs so well in seawater-soaked conditions, we should start using it in certain construction projects, right? Unfortunately, the recipe for this concrete was lost long ago.

Jackson is currently working with geological engineer Tom Adams to create a new version of this recipe – except this time using materials from the western United States. She and her colleagues intend to continue their research on this front, potentially furthering our understanding of how to build longer-lasting concrete structures by the sea.

If you’re short or suffer from arthritis, you may have evolution to blame – at least, according to a new study of a genetic variant found in Asian and European populations.

A team of researchers from the <a href="http://med.stanford.edu/">Stanford University School of Medicine</a> and <a href="http://www.harvard.edu/">Harvard University</a> found that a genetic change associated with both shrinking height in humans and with painful osteoarthritis may have been favored by early humans as they migrated out of Africa.

The gene is rarely found in people living in Africa, but is common among people of Asian and European descent. Up to half of those populations have the genetic variant, researchers found.

"Because it's been positively selected, this gene variant is present in billions of people, so even though it only increases each person's risk by less than twofold, it's likely responsible for millions of cases of arthritis around the globe,” said Dr. David Kingsley of Stanford.

But why? The weather might have played a role, the scientists speculate. More compact bodies can better withstand frostbite-inducing temperatures and make it through ice-induced falls with fewer injuries, the researchers said.

"It's possible that climbing around in cold environments was enough of a risk factor to select for a protective variant even if it brought along an increase likelihood of an age-related disease like arthritis, which typically doesn't develop until late in life," Kingsley said.

In other words, despite the aching joints in old age, shorter people survived the climate outside of Africa better than tall, lanky, less arthritis-prone groups. 

The researchers studied a gene called GDF5, which Kingsley and his team first linked to skeletal growth in the 1990s. In humans, mutations with the gene are linked to short stature and a 1.2 to 1.8 percent increase in risk of osteoarthritis.

"The potential medical impact of the finding is very interesting because so many people are affected. This is an incredibly prevalent, and ancient, variant,” Kingsley said. “Many people think of osteoarthritis as a kind of wear-and-tear disease, but there's clearly a genetic component at work here as well.”

Toxic chemicals found in the soil as a result of human activities can cause major issues for the development and growth of plants. But now, researchers have discovered two genes in baker's yeast that are capable of increasing plant resistance to a broad range of contaminants. This could allow plants and crops to thrive despite soil pollution. 

Soil contamination is due in large part to heavy metals and organic pollutants that are leaked during industrial activity. Soil is also frequently polluted by improper use of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. A research team led by Paula Duque from the <a href="http://www.igc.gulbenkian.pt/">Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia</a> took a new approach to this environmental issue by analyzing the properties of baker's yeast, most commonly used for making bread and beer. 

"Current strategies to decontaminate soils are very expensive and not so effective. The scientific community has been looking for alternative strategies to make plants more resilient to toxic compounds,” said Duque. “A possible solution may lie in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a species of yeast used for baking, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/probiotic-beer-helps-gut/">brewing</a>, and winemaking.”

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is known to be resistant to herbicide and other chemicals. Isabel Sa-Correia of the <a href="https://www.ulisboa.pt/en/">Universidade de Lisboa</a> and her colleagues identified two genes that give this particular species of yeast its resistance. Duque’s team put the two genes to the test on a small flowering plant known as Arabidopsis thaliana. 

"These two yeast genes produce proteins that are able to expel molecules from cells. So we hypothesized that they could play a similar role in plants, eliminating toxic molecules and allowing normal growth,” said Duque.

The researchers discovered that once either of the two yeast genes were inserted, the plants became more resistant to herbicides, fungicides and heavy metals. These plants were able to grow and develop significantly better with the modifications.

The study, published in Scientific Reports, will continue with further testing of the Arabidopsis thaliana and other plant species. The team hopes to extend the application of the genes to major crops. Duque expressed that the findings of this study “hold much promise to help solve a difficult environmental problem."

Baker’s yeast could help battle soil contamination

Sea spray is more than just a pretty natural phenomena. Its ability to absorb water can also offer some clues about the health of the Earth’s climate.

The sea spray produced by the world’s oceans is one of the largest natural sources of aerosols on the planet. These aerosolized ocean particles drift up to the atmosphere, where they play a role in scattering and absorbing sunlight, forming clouds, and counteract the effects of warming.

"It is widely understood that aerosols have a net cooling effect on climate, counteracting the warming caused by greenhouse gases,” said Dr. Matt Salter of Stockholm University, a co-author of a new study of sea spray. “However, the magnitude of this cooling is highly uncertain, in part due to knowledge gaps in how natural aerosol particles interact with solar radiation and clouds.”

The study examined sea spray’s hygroscopicity – the measurement of its ability to absorb or release water as a function of humidity. Spray is not just made up of water and salt, but also bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other organic matter from the oceans. All of these additions affect ocean spray’s hygroscopicity.

The international study focused on the inorganic salts found in ocean spray and their ability to absorb water. Experiments in a controlled laboratory showed that sea spray has much lower ability to absorb water than pure sodium chloride, which is often used as a stand-in in climate models. In other words, climate models may be overestimating the effectiveness of sea spray in absorbing water.

“This finding has implications for the role of sea spray aerosols in climate, especially on how they interact with solar radiation, " said Dr. Paul Zieger, another of the study’s co-authors, in a press release.

However, part of the reason sea salts absorb less water than sodium chloride may be because, by definition, sea spray already contains water. 

The study helps to add to research on aerosols – both natural and man-made – and their effects on Earth’s climate, Salter said.

The study will be published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Sea spray offers clues into the health of Earth's climate

Sea spray is more than just a pretty natural phenomena....

Studies have shown that dark chocolate can lower blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and heart risks. Now, there’s another reason to snack: it may also boost human brain power.

The key comes from a chemical called flavanols. In addition to promoting healthy blood vessels, flavanols may also improve cognitive power and memory.

“Through a variety of direct and indirect biological actions, in part still speculative, cocoa and cocoa-derived food have been suggested to possess the potential to counteract cognitive decline and sustain cognitive abilities, particularly among patients at risk,” a team of researchers from the <a href="http://www.univaq.it/en/">University of L’Aquila</a> in Italy.

Or, in other words, the flavanols in chocolate may help counteract cognitive decline. Or at least, that’s what the researchers set out to find out in a review of available research into chocolate’s benefits.

The study adds to a growing body of research showing chocolate’s positive effects on health and brain power. Researchers looked specifically at research that studied the effects of cocoa on the elderly. 

“With the increase in general population aging, age-related cognitive decline has progressively become a major public health issue,” the researchers said.

Flavanols can cross the blood-brain barrier, the researchers said. Once there, they may protect vulnerable neurons, particularly in the hippocampus, which is connected to memory, along with the cerebral cortex and cerebellum.

These are the structures within the brain that are most vulnerable the deterioration.

“In memory-related areas such as the hippocampus, flavonoids promote the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), that is crucial to adult neurogenesis, synaptic growth, and neuronal survival,” the researchers wrote.

This can help battle neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Of course, that’s no excuse to pig out on chocolate. It’s just one more reason a few squares of dark chocolate as an after-dinner treat is a great addition to a healthy diet.

The research review was published in the journal <a href="http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnut.2017.00019/full">Frontiers</a>.

A California researcher has determined the exact location on an ocean wave where a surfer gains the greatest speed to get the best ride.

The “sweet spot” for a surfer is inside the curl of the breaking wave, according to the study by Nick Pizzo, a postdoctoral researcher at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California - San Diego</a>.

Pizzo applied principles of physics at the ocean's surface in order to study how energy is transferred from the underlying wave to a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/surfing-event-opens-in-rio-despite-severe-water-pollution-3/">surfer</a>. 

"Based upon the speed and geometry of the wave, you can determine the conditions to surf a wave and also where on the wave the maximum acceleration, or 'sweet spot,' will be located," said Pizzo, an avid surfer.

The study may have implications far beyond surfing, said Pizzo.

When a wave breaks at the ocean surface, currents are generated and water droplets in the form of sea spray are ejected from the ocean into the atmosphere, the study said. These kinds of small-scale processes are important for improving weather and climate models and better forecast major storm events and the future climate.

“The study was motivated by important scientific questions that lead to a better description of the upper ocean to be used in weather and climate models," said Pizzo. "By studying the acceleration of a theoretical surfer on a wave, we can provide a better description of the currents generated by breaking waves, leading to an improved understanding of the momentum and energy budget between the atmosphere and ocean."

Breaking waves are fundamental to weather prediction, when storms and hurricanes are strongly influenced by the physical processes generated by breaking waves, as well as the longer-term evolution of the climate, Pizzo said.

"We need to understand the little things to get the big picture," he added. 

The study was published in the<a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-fluid-mechanics"> Journal of Fluid Mechanics</a>.

Study identifies surfing ‘sweet spot’ on a wave

Orca whales are having trouble finding enough fish to eat, making it more difficult for them to reproduce, a new study found.

Two-thirds of orca pregnancies failed over a seven-year period, according to the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington</a> study that examined orca excrement collected at sea.

"A large number of whales are conceiving, but when nutrition is poor, they don't sustain those pregnancies," said Sam Wasser, lead author of the paper and a University of Washington professor.

The study focused on food supply as an important stress factor among these <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-whales-limited-hearing-land/">whales</a>, who typically eat fish. While other killer whales usually eat marine mammals, these orcas primarily eat salmon.

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>.

"I think it's fair to call out nutrition as a major stressor for these guys," said Joe Gaydos, a wildlife veterinarian and science director of <a href="http://www.seadocsociety.org/">SeaDoc Society</a>.

Loss of habitat from urban development, dams, fishing, pollution and competition from non-native fish have caused many species of salmon to be listed as threatened or endangered.

Researchers also studied two whale hormones that play important roles in physiological stress and were able to differentiate between stress from poor nutrition and stress from boat traffic.

Transient resident whales that feed on marine mammals confront similar boat noise and pollution but haven't had the same kind of pregnancy problems as the fish-eating whales, the study said.

Improving Chinook salmon runs by reducing pollution could help save Puget Sound orcas, the study added.

For a while now, the release of toxic chemicals when cooking with olive oil has been the subject of health concerns. Past studies have even linked the chemicals it releases to cancer and diabetes.

Recent studies have suggested that using vegetable oils to fry food may come with health risks due to the release of toxic chemicals known as aldehydes. These aldehydes are chemical compounds that contain a carbon-oxygen double bond, and are common to many organic compounds. Aldehydes form naturally in the human body as by-products of the metabolism of fructose and <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/alcohol-body-drunk/">alcohol</a>.

Some people have been concerned that olive oil may not be safe to use in frying food due to the release of aldehydes. However, a new study that tested vegetable oils for heat-induced aldehyde release found that olive oil actually performed reasonably well.

The authors published their work in <a href="https://theconversation.com/us">The Conversation</a>. Researchers from the <a href="http://www.ehu.eus/en/en-home">University of the Basque Country</a> analyzed olive oil, sunflower oil, and flaxseed oils for aldehyde content after heating them to 190°C. They discovered that monounsaturated olive oil released fewer aldehydes than the other two oils, and did so much later in the heating process.

The researchers believe this is due to the structural differences between the oils, as polyunsaturated oils contain more regions vulnerable to chemical reaction. Furthermore, the high antioxidant content of olive oil may also reduce the concentration of harmful chemicals released during heating.

In short, if olive oil is used to shallow fry foods for short periods of time, the risk of your body being exposed to any concentration of aldehydes more significant than what your body naturally produces is very low. However, experts stress that there are certainly healthier ways to prepare food.

For a while now, the release of toxic chemicals when...

A team of researchers at <a href="http://www.nus.edu.sg/">National University of Singapore</a> have developed a probiotic beer which may neutralize toxins and viruses and regulate the immune system.

The beer uses a probiotic strain from the bacteria Lactobacillus paracasei L26, first isolated from human intestine, the university said.

Fourth-year student Chan Mei Zhi Alcine decided to create the beer for people with lactose intolerance who cannot have probiotic yogurts.

“The health benefits of probiotics are well known,” said Alcine. “While good bacteria are often present in foods that have been fermented, there are currently no beers in the market that contain probiotics.”

Making the probiotic beer was challenging because beer contains hop acids that can stop the probiotics from surviving, she said.

“For this beer, we used a lactic acid bacterium as a probiotic micro-organism,” said Chan.”'It will utilize sugars present in the wort to produce sour-tasting lactic acid, resulting in a beer with sharp and tart flavors.”

The beer, which has a “sharp and tart” flavor, takes about a month to brew and has an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crayfish-alcohol-effects/">alcohol</a> content of 3.5 percent. The NUS research team has filed a patent to protect the recipe.

“I am confident that the probiotic gut-friendly beer will be well-received by beer drinkers, as they can now enjoy their beers and be healthy,” said Associate Professor Liu Shao Quan, who supervised the project.

Liu and Chan hope to collaborate with industry partners to introduce the new beer to consumers.

Researchers develop probiotic beer that helps your gut

A new look at a disregarded discovery is giving researchers insight into an ancient Swiss reptile. The well-preserved remains of the Swiss reptile, Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi, were reconstructed by scientists to reveal a creature that looked like a mythical dragon with bony-plated armor.

Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi was first described 14 years ago using a sample that was broken and only partially preserved. Most aspects of the appearance and lives of the ancient creatures remained unknown. 

The sample used for the current study was a well-preserved fossil recovered 15 years ago near the easternmost canton of Switzerland known as Grisons. The 241-million-year-old fossil was found in a calcareous deposit among fish and marine reptiles, and was mistakenly identified as a fish. 

Over a decade after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/teeth-fossils-prehistoric-dentistry/">fossil</a> was first found, scientists finally pieced together the fascinating image of this ancient reptile. The skeleton of the Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi that was assembled by the team stood approximately 20 centimeters long with a well-developed armor of osteoderms. 

The researchers were surprised how much the reptile looked like girdled lizards, or Cordylidae. Some of the more strongly-armored girdled lizard species may have served as the basis for the creation of mythical dragons due to their appearance. 

The Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi also closely resembled small, scaly reptiles found today in the desert of southern Africa. Torsten Scheyer, a paleontologist at the <a href="http://www.uzh.ch/en.html">University of Zurich</a>, led the Swiss-British team in the study. 

"This is a case of convergent development as the extinct species is not closely related to today's African lizards,” explained Scheyer.

Genetic analysis of the specimen revealed that the reptiles were most closely related to various marine reptiles including ichthyosaurs, or “fish lizards.” However, the skeleton showed no signs of fins or flippers which would indicate that the species dwelled in the sea. 

The scientists believe the Eusaurosphargis dalsassoi resided on beach islands in shallow waters like its marine relatives, and that the remains of this particular creature washed into the water and settled into the sea basin after it died around 241 million years ago.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.

These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. Even 20 years ago, researchers assumed trees with such complex root systems didn't evolve so early."



The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-modern-preservation-efforts">Modern preservation efforts</h2>



In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The town plans to conduct a feasibility study exploring the possibility of creating an educational center and working lab on-site.



Joe Hasenkopf, chair of the Cairo Planning Board, hopes to partner with educational institutions to create a research facility serving scientists, students, and the public.

Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. 



Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.



Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. 



They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
