Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. 



A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. 



If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. 



Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. 



Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. 



Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. 



Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.



The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.



If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. 



This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.



"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. 



"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.



"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.



"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." 



"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. 



The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.



The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. 



Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09514-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a>.

One source of clean energy that shows immense promise is splitting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, then mixing that with hydrogen to create hydrocarbon fuels.

However, until now there has not been a cost-effective way to split carbon dioxide.

Scientists from the <a href="https://www.epfl.ch/">Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne</a> have developed a new technique that could make it a lot more affordable to split the greenhouse gas into carbon monoxide and oxygen.

The scientists have created a new catalyst that deposits tin oxide on copper oxide nanowires – both abundant elements on Earth and easily obtainable. 

By using these abundant materials, the scientists say they can cut the costs associated with splitting carbon dioxide. They’ve also been able to make the process more efficient, they said.

"This is the first time that such a bi-functional and low-cost catalyst is demonstrated," said Marcel Schreier, a doctoral candidate at EPFL and one of the researchers who developed the process. "Very few catalysts – except expensive ones, like gold and silver – can selectively transform CO2 to CO in water, which is crucial for industrial applications."

Splitting carbon dioxide has been a hot topic in recent years. It potentially provides a plentiful source of fuels. It also helps to remove carbon dioxide from the air – provided it’s split using a process that isn’t powered by carbon-based fuels.

Like other recent attempts to develop a cost-effective system for splitting carbon dioxide, the electrocatalysis process developed by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne team relies on solar power.

"The work sets a new benchmark for solar-driven [carbon dioxide] reduction," said Dr. Jingshan Luo, a postdoctoral researcher at EPFL who worked with Schreier on the project.

The study will be published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/nenergy/">Nature Energy</a>. It was funded by <a href="https://www.siemens.com/us/en/home.html">Siemens AG</a> and a <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/">Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship</a>.

Tiny bits of decomposing leaves in soil emit nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas that's more potent than carbon dioxide, according to a new <a href="https://msu.edu/">Michigan State University</a> study.

The findings, published in <a href="http://www.nature.com/ngeo/">Nature Geoscience</a>, could help scientists refine nitrous oxide emission predictions and guide future agriculture and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rainfall-carbon-emissions-soil-microbes/">soil</a> management practices.

"Most nitrous oxide is produced within teaspoon-sized volumes of soil, and these so-called hot spots can emit a lot of nitrous oxide quickly," said Sasha Kravchenko, Michigan State Plant, Soil and Microbial scientist and lead author of the study. "But the reason for occurrence of these hot spots has mystified soil microbiologists since it was discovered several decades ago."

It's difficult to study and label an entire field as a source of greenhouse gas emissions when the source is grams of soil harboring decomposing leaves, Kravchenko said. Changing the view from binoculars to microscopes will help improve N2O emission predictions, which traditionally are about 50 percent accurate, at best, the researcher added. 

Nitrous oxide's global warming potential is 300 times greater than carbon dioxide, and emissions are largely driven by agricultural practices, the study said.

"This work sheds new light on what drives emissions of nitrous oxide from productive farmlands," said John Schade, a program director for the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation</a>'s Long-Term Ecological Research program, which co-funded the research with NSF's earth sciences division. "We need studies like this to guide the creation of sustainable agricultural practices necessary to feed a growing human population with minimal environmental impact."

Kravchenko and her team took soil samples from MSU's Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research site. Then, in partnership with scientists from the <a href="http://www.uchicago.edu/">University of Chicago</a> at Argonne National Laboratory, they examined the samples at Argonne's synchrotron scanning facilities, a much more powerful version of a medical CT scanner.

The X-ray scanner penetrated the soil and allowed the team to accurately characterize the environments where N2O is produced and emitted.

"We found that hotspot emissions happen only when large soil pores are present," Kravchenko said. "The leaf particles act as tiny sponges in soil, soaking up water from large pores to create a micro-habitat perfect for the bacteria that produce nitrous oxide."

Not as much N2O is produced in areas where smaller pores are present. Small pores, such as in clay soils, hold water more tightly so that it can't be soaked up by the leaf particles, the study said.

The researchers hope the findings will help scientists develop ways to reduce the emission of nitrous oxide from agricultural soils.

Future research will review which plant leaves contribute to higher N2O emissions. Plants with more nitrogen in their leaves, such as soybeans, will more than likely give off more N2O as their leaves decompose. Researchers also will look at leaf and root characteristics and see how they influence emissions, the authors said.

According to a new <a href="http://www.caltech.edu/">Caltech</a> study, water does in fact have a taste and should even be considered as a flavor.

Researchers found that taste cells in mice that relay information to the brain via taste nerves were stimulated by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/washing-hands-cold-water/">water</a>.

"This was exciting because it implied that some taste cells are capable of detecting water," said graduate student Dhruv Zocchi, first author of the study. 

In order to test which taste cells respond to water, the team genetically and pharmacologically blocked the function of individual cell populations in the mice. For example, when the salt taste receptor was blocked, salt no longer triggered activity in taste nerves, but responses to other tastes were not affected. 

"To our surprise, when we silenced sour taste cells, water responses were also completely blocked," said Yuki Oka, a Caltech assistant professor of biology, "The results suggested that water is sensed through sour taste cells."

In order to prove that the sour cells contribute to water detection, the team used a technique called optogenetics that allowed them to stimulate sour cells with light instead of water. The researchers removed water from the animals' water bottle and made it so that the bottle's spout emitted a blue light when the animals touched it. 

They discovered that thirsty genetically engineered mice would go to the spout for water, encounter the light, and "drink" it. Though the mice were not rehydrated, they kept licking the water source because the light created a sensory cue of water.

Mice usually avoid sour substances such as lemon juice, the researchers said. But when the team stimulated sour cells with light, they did not observe that kind of aversive behavior in the engineered mice.

"These results raise the question: What information about taste are sour cells really relaying to the brain?" Zocchi says. "Maybe sour cells are not directly linked to the unpleasant sourness that we perceive, but instead they may induce a different type of taste, like water, when stimulated."

Stimulation of the cells does not alleviate thirst, Oka said.

"But this finding helps us understand how the brain interprets water signals under normal and thirsty states,” he said. “Next, we would like to tackle the mechanisms by which the hedonic value or 'pleasantness' of sensory inputs are regulated by brain activity.”

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/neuro/">Nature Neuroscience</a>.

Engaging with children while reading books to them gives their brain a cognitive "boost," a new study found.

The study, based on functional magnetic resonance imaging, reinforces the value of "dialogic reading," where the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/voluntary-sharing-children-happy/">child</a> is encouraged to actively participate.

"The takeaway for parents in this study is that they should engage more when reading with their child, ask questions, have them turn the page, and interact with each other," said John Hutton, a pediatrician at <a href="https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/">Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center</a> and lead author of the study. "In turn, this could fuel brain activation--or ’turbocharge’ the development of literacy skills, particularly comprehension, in preschool aged children."

The study used functional MRI scans of 22 girls, age 4, to explore the relationship between engagement and verbal interactivity during a mother-child reading observation and neural activation and connectivity during a story listening task. 

Children exhibiting greater interest in the narrative showed increased activation in right-sided cerebellar areas of the brain. This is the area thought to support cognitive skill acquisition and refinement via connection to language, association and executive function areas, the study said.

"Our findings underscore the importance of interventions explicitly addressing both parent and child reading engagement, including awareness and reduction of distractions such as cellphones, which were the most common preventable barrier that we observed," said Hutton.

Long-term studies are needed beginning in infancy to better understand mother-child factors contributing to healthy brain development and literacy skills since this study does not establish causation, the medical center said.

Aldehydes are organic chemical compounds that are produced in small amounts in our bodies. ConsiderIng aldehydes are also commonly found in our environment, the health risks that are associated with these compounds are alarming. New research suggests that aldehydes found in shampoo and liquor cause cancer by preventing our bodies from repairing DNA damage. 

<a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge</a> Professor Ashok Venkitaraman is the lead author of the study.

“We knew aldehydes were not nice and have been linked to cancer, but we did not know they damage proteins in the cells important for preventing the DNA damage which causes cancer,” said Venkitaraman.

Aldehydes are found in shampoo products we use to wash our hair and in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/crayfish-alcohol-effects/">liquor</a> that we drink. They are also present in the air from car exhaust and in building materials.  

“We don’t know how much of these chemicals we are breathing in or how long they last in the air after being produced, but aldehydes are found all over the place,” explained Venkitaraman.

Scientists used genetically-engineered human cells to establish how aldehydes could cause cancer. The study, published in the journal Cell, revealed that aldehydes obstruct healthy cells and prevent their defense mechanisms from repairing DNA when they divide. 

By reducing the amount of BRCA2 protein in cells, aldehydes weaken the cells. BRCA2 protein is needed to repair damage to DNA, and if the damage is not repaired it can progress into cancer. 

The study indicates that aldehydes put people at a higher risk of developing breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer. Formaldehyde, an odorless gas used in the embalming process, is linked to nose and throat cancer.

Despite scientific evidence that suggests the amount of ice in Antarctica is growing, there is concern about the impact of climate change in this region. Melting ice is making glaciers increasingly unstable. Researchers from <a href="http://www.swansea.ac.uk/">Swansea University</a> are monitoring an enormous rift in an Antarctic ice shelf that is about to produce an iceberg the size of Delaware.

Ice calving is when ice splits off from the edge of a glacier, which usually happens when the glacier expands. An ice shelf in Antarctica, known as <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/massive-iceberg-larsen-c-ice-shelf/">Larsen C,</a> is close to shedding one of the biggest icebergs in recorded history with an area of 1900 square miles. 

A rift in Larsen C suddenly grew by 11 miles in December of 2016, and is now close to 125 miles long. The tip of the opening has shifted in the direction of the front of the ice. The rift has only 8 more miles of ice shelf left before the enormous mass of ice breaks off into the sea. Satellite images also revealed a second division has formed that is 8 miles long. 

In 2002, ice calving caused an ice shelf known as Larsen B to become unbalanced and break into thousands of icebergs. The ice shelf is believed to have been stable for  12,000 years until global warming caused it to explode in a matter of 35 days. Research shows the ice shelf had only begun melting a few years before it collapsed. 

Experts believe the properties of the ice shelf changed and caused the instability.  Melting ice fills crevices with water which then pushes glaciers apart until they shatter. The breakdown of Larsen B is one of the largest on record and believed to have impacted its neighboring ice shelves, including Larsen C.

Coastal nesting birds around the world may be be driven to extinction by rising sea levels and more frequent flooding from climate change, according to a 20-year study of Eurasian oystercatchers.

"Our study species, the Eurasian oystercatcher, lives in an area where flooding is becoming more common, posing a threat to the survival of the population,” said Liam Bailey of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_National_University"> Australian National University</a>. "Our study found no evidence that Eurasian oystercatchers have increased the elevation of their nests, even among birds that lost a nest during a flood.” 

The presence of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/habitat-fragmentation-predators/">predators</a> or unsuitable vegetation might discourage birds from nesting higher, Bailey said.

A recent study using thousands of bird surveys along the east coast of the United States found consistent declines in coastal marsh birds, the university said.

"Researchers predict that rising sea levels and increased flooding events may drive the saltmarsh sparrow, a coastal species in the U.S. to extinction, possibly even within the next 20 years," Bailey said.

“Like the Eurasian oystercatcher, this species does not appear to be adapting to the changing tidal conditions," he added.

A similar study showed strong declines in coastal bird species along the coast of Northern Europe.

The research team will investigate other possible strategies that birds may use to avoid flooding, such as encouraging birds to lay their nests earlier in the year when floods are less common.

"Our work is part of a growing amount of research that shows the vulnerability of coastal bird species,” he said. “These species may need additional conservation focus in the future."

The research was published in the <a href="http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/">Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B</a>.

Passing skills down through the generations, once believed to an exclusive human trait, has been discovered in chimpanzees, according to a new study.

Primatologists from the <a href="https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/">University of St Andrews</a> gave chimpanzees the chance to suck through straws to get juice from a large container just outside their enclosure.

A range of different objects were available for the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/humans-chimpanzees-exhibit-empathy/">chimps</a> to use, from sticks to dip in the juice to various tubes that could be used as straws. 

The most complicated tool was one which needed to be unfolded, with a valve which needed to be unscrewed to create a long straw to reach the juice from the deep container, the university said.

Chimpanzees presented only with the complex option failed to use it. However in other groups, where one chimpanzee had been trained to use the complicated tool, other chimpanzees watched and copied them.

The groups that were not provided with a trained member did see some chimpanzees create this complex behavior by themselves by pooling of partial discoveries by different individuals who had already mastered using the simpler straws.

 “Perhaps the most fundamental thing this study shows is that a group of chimpanzees can appear more intelligent than any single individual – together they can create more advanced steps in cultural evolution,” said the study leader, Andrew Whiten of the University of St Andrews.

The results show that some non-human animals are “better equipped to improve the complexity of their cultural behaviors over time than was previously believed,” said the study’s lead author, Gillian Vale, of the <a href="https://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas</a>.

The findings are significant for understanding what may have happened in the course of human evolution as new skills were required to deal with radical ecological changes as forests gave way to savannas, with “cumulative culture” accelerating particularly during ice ages, the scientists said.

The ability of humans to evolve these skills over generations by building on previous knowledge, a process known as “cumulative culture”, was thought to separate humanity from the rest of nature.

The new research suggests that apes may indeed share some of the foundations of human culture, the university said.

An hour after President Donald Trump’s <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trump-decision-paris-climate-agreement/">announced</a> the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement Thursday, three state governors said they will continue to support the international pact.

“This is an insane move by this president," California Gov. Jerry Brown said, describing the decision as "deviant behavior from the highest office in the land."

Brown, Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York announced a new pact called the U.S. Climate Alliance to uphold the Paris climate agreement.

"We governors are going to step into this cockpit and fly the plane," Inslee told reporters. "The president wants to ground it - we're going to fly it."

Under the Paris agreement, the United States voluntarily committed to reducing polluting emissions by 1.6 billion tons by 2025.

The Democratic governors' new pact commits to that same goal, which requires a 26 to 28 percent reduction in emissions from 2005 levels.

Specific targets haven't been set for each state. California, New York and Washington together account for about 10 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, Brown's office said.

California is already working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels by 2030.

Brown is heading to China to discuss emissions-reduction policies with other leaders and has promised to fill the void left by the Trump administration. In California, Brown is battling to reauthorize a cap-and-trade program that expires in 2020, a key piece of his political legacy. He's said California's economy is proof that combating climate change isn't the economic deadweight Trump suggests.

Washington state is also moving ahead with capping carbon emissions and requiring power plants and oil refineries to reduce emissions over time. In New York, Cuomo announced he would use executive orders to ensure his state continues to abide by the Paris agreement.

West Virginia Coal Association Senior Vice President Chris Hamilton said U.S. withdrawal from the Paris accord would build confidence in U.S. mining and industry even if it wouldn't make major changes on the ground. Trump promised during his campaign to bring back coal mining jobs.

Republican politicians and representatives of the coal industry cheered Trump's action.

"President Trump's courageous decision to exit the Paris Accord recognizes that the United States is not legally bound to an Obama-era agreement that set unrealistic emissions targets at the expense of billions of American taxpayer dollars without the approval of Congress," said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who joined nine other states in urging Trump to leave the agreement.

NY, CA, and Washington team up to form climate pact

An hour after President Donald Trump’s announced the U.S. withdrawal...

Almost immediately after President Trump <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/trump-decision-paris-climate-agreement/">announced</a> that he will withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, leaders of France, Germany, and Italy reacted by saying that the treaty cannot be renegotiated.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright tweeted, "Withdrawing from the Paris accord turns a symbol of American leadership into a symbol of American isolation. Damages our economy and security."

President Trump defended his decision to withdraw from the treaty by explaining the agreement would place our country's  “abundant energy reserves” out of reach, “leaving millions and millions of families trapped in poverty and joblessness.”

Australian energy and environment minister Josh Frydenberg expressed his disappointment with Trump’s decision but reaffirmed his government’s dedication to the Paris Agreement. 

“We reiterate our full commitment to the Paris Accord,” <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/live/2017/jun/01/donald-trump-paris-climate-agreement-live-news?page=with:block-59308ac2e4b00493c827856a#block-59308ac2e4b00493c827856a">Frydenberg told ABC</a>. “We believe that the targets we agreed to, the 26% to 28% reduction in emissions by 2030 on 2005 levels are reasonable, are achievable. I do believe that it is still a very meaningful agreement. You have more than 190 countries that signed on and in record time, 146 countries have ratified. So even without the US, around 70% of the world’s emissions are covered by that agreement.”

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz supports Trump’s decision.

“This is great news for family budgets, which under the Obama Paris plan would have seen significant increases in costs for utilities and nearly everything powered by fossil fuels, which accounts for 82 percent of all the energy generated in the United States,” Cruz said.

In a statement made after President Trump’s announcement on Thursday, former president Barack Obama said, “The nations that remain in the Paris Agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created. I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack. But even in the absence of American leadership; even as this Administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future; I’m confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we’ve got.” 

Regardless of President Trump’s decision to leave the Paris Agreement, urgent attention is needed to resolve the global climate crisis we are facing. The worldwide campaign initiated by this historical plan will not be thwarted by one president's decision not to comply. 

German environment minister Barbara Hendricks said, “The world’s climate will survive for eight years without the US.”

Still, the United States leads the world in carbon dioxide emissions - second only to China, and so the dissatisfaction of leaders at home and abroad is perhaps justifiable. 

“By walking away from this pact, President Trump is abandoning America’s leadership position in the fight against the climate crisis and is sending a strong message to the rest of the world to create, design and manufacture clean energy solutions and create jobs elsewhere,” said House minority leader Nancy Pelosi. “If President Trump wants nations like China and India to take stronger and swifter action on climate, then he should do so through the accountability and enforcement provisions in the Paris Agreement, not by breaking our word and storming out of the room.”

World leaders react to Trump’s decision to leave Paris Agreement

For years, we have believed that it takes hot water to remove harmful <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sponge-bacteria-toxic-compounds/">bacteria</a> from our hands. This has led to strict regulations in the restaurant and food industry that drive up utility costs. However, an emerging study finds there is no need to burn the germs off your hands because cold water is just as effective.

Researchers enlisted the help of 21 volunteers for the study. Over a six-month period of time, the participants were exposed to harmless bacteria. They washed their hands for ten seconds at different temperatures with various amounts of soap. The study revealed that the same amount of germs were removed regardless of the temperature of the water or the amount of soap used.

In the United States, many antibacterial soaps were banned last year after companies failed to prove they were safe to use in the long term. The FDA took action against 19 chemicals that were contained in many hand and bar soaps. 

Dr Janet Woodcock is the director of the FDA's center for evaluation and research. 

“Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that they are any better than plain soap and water,” explained Dr. Woodcock. “In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long term.”

Donald Schaffner is a professor of Food Science at <a href="http://www.rutgers.edu/">Rutgers University</a> and an author of the hand-washing study. He suggests the findings of this study can go a long way in saving money and conserving energy. 

“This study may have significant implications towards water energy, since using cold water saves more energy than warm or hot water,” said Schaffner.

The findings of this study, published in the Journal of Food Protection, indicate that food industry policies should address the length of time employees wash hands rather than the temperature of the water that is used. 

“I think this study indicates that there should be a policy change,” concluded Schaffner. “We are wasting energy to heat water to a level that is not necessary.”

Today, President Trump announced that the United States will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. The pact, which is an unprecedented global strategy to fight climate change, has been signed by nearly every other country in the world. The decision comes as a major blow to environmentalists, and frankly, anyone who cares about the planet.

"We're getting out. But we will start to negotiate and we'll see if we can make a deal that's fair," Trump said in a speech from the White House Rose Garden. "And if we can, that's great. And if we can't, that's fine."

"The Paris climate accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States, to the exclusive benefit of other countries, leaving American workers, who I love, and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered factories and vastly diminished economic production."

According to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a>, “the decision followed an intense struggle within the administration over the fate of the agreement, with Ivanka Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and business leaders urging the president to remain in the accord.” 

Over the course of his presidential campaign, Trump vowed over and over to exit the deal within the first 100 days of his presidency. While he didn’t quite hit his self-imposed deadline, he did manage to make major changes to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Newly-appointed EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, former Attorney General of Oklahoma, has a history of challenging environmental regulations in favor of big oil and gas companies. 

Together, President Trump and Pruitt have undermined former President Obama’s 2013 Climate Action Plan, criticized the Paris Agreement, and rejected scientific facts about climate change. Trump has expressed the opinion that the terms of the Paris deal forces America to make sacrifices that will hurt the economy with no tangible benefits.

Leaders recently left the G7 Summit in Italy with no confidence that President Trump supports global efforts to fight climate change. In a public statement made after the summit, <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-g7-summit-latest-climate-change-consensus-paris-agreement-angela-merkel-a7759231.html">G7 leaders stated</a>, “The United States of America is in the process of reviewing its policies on climate change and on the Paris Agreement and thus is not in a position to join the consensus on these topics.”

Corporate America has urged Trump to keep the United States in the Paris Accord. 25 big businesses including Apple, Facebook, and Google signed a letter to Trump expressing that the terms of the agreement are best for America's self-interest, both environmentally and economically. Other industry giants such as Exxon and General Electric also made efforts to convince the President to keep our commitment to the deal. 

“Energy needs are a function of population and living standards,” <a href="https://www.google.com/amp/amp.timeinc.net/fortune/2017/06/01/apple-google-facebook-trump-stay-paris-accord/%3Fsource%3Ddam">Exxon CEO Darren Woods</a> stated in Dallas Wednesday. “When it comes to policy, the goal should be to reduce emissions at the lowest cost to society,” said Woods.

According to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/">Washington Post</a>, Woods wrote Trump a letter dated May 9th in what has been called “a last-ditch personal plea” to keep our end of the deal. Woods said this is critical in order for the United States to remain “at the negotiating table to ensure a level playing field” on energy sources.

While awaiting today's much-anticipated decision, European Union leaders teamed up with China and vowed to move forward with their commitment to the Paris Agreement. The position of these countries to follow through with the terms of the deal were drafted in a joint statement that will be released Friday, regardless of the President's decision. 

Trump’s decision to retract America's willingness to participate in this historical effort to curb climate change will not be easily forgotten by the other great powers of the world.  Americans will now be faced with the uncertainty of when and how climate change will be dealt with here in the United States.

Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

Most coastal towns are <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/sinking-land-will-intensify-the-effects-of-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">preparing for higher sea levels</a>, but <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/greenland-no-longer-has-to-worry-about-rising-sea-levels/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greenland presents</a> a different scenario during climate change. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. Think of acid rain as nature's chemistry experiment gone wrong. These compounds react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form sulfuric and nitric acids. When mixed with water vapor in clouds, they create precipitation with dangerously low pH levels.



While clean rain has a pH of about 5.6, acid rain could drop as low as 4.2 to 4.4 – roughly as acidic as tomato juice or coffee. Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
