Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. 



A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. 



If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. 



Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. 



Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. 



Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. 



Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.



The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.



If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. 



This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.



"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. 



"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.



"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.



"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." 



"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. 



The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.



The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. 



Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09514-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a>.

Sherpas, an ethnic group from the mountain regions of Nepal, are able to live at high altitude with no apparent health consequences and could help scientists develop new ways of treating lack of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/low-oxygen-levels-delayed-evolution/">oxygen</a>, a new study said.

Previous studies have suggested that Sherpas have fewer blood cells at high altitude, but higher levels of nitric oxide, a chemical that opens up blood vessels and keeps blood flowing.

A team of <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge </a>researchers followed two groups, one of Sherpas, the other lowlanders, as they made a gradual ascent up to Mount Everest Base Camp at an elevation of 5,300 m.

The team found the Sherpas' mitochondria were more efficient at using oxygen to produce ATP, the energy that powers our bodies. They also found lower levels of fat oxidation in the Sherpas.

The measurements taken at high altitude rarely changed in the Sherpas, suggesting that they were born with such differences. For lowlanders, however, measurements tended to change after time spent at altitude, suggesting that their bodies were acclimatizing and beginning to mimic the Sherpas'.

One of the key differences the study uncovered, was in the levels of phosphocreatine an energy reserve that acts as a buffer to help muscles contract when no ATP is present. In lowlanders, after two months at high altitude, phosphocreatine levels crash, whereas in Sherpas levels actually increase.

The team found differences in the levels of free radicals, molecules created by a lack of oxygen that can be potentially damaging to cells and tissue. While these cells increase rapidly at high altitude, at least initially, levels in Sherpas are very low.

"Sherpas have spent thousands of years living at high altitudes, so it should be unsurprising that they have adapted to become more efficient at using oxygen and generating energy," said Dr. Andrew Murray from the University of Cambridge, the study's senior author. "When those of us from lower-lying countries spend time at high altitude, our bodies adapt to some extent to become more 'Sherpa-like', but we are no match for their efficiency."

The findings could provide valuable insights to explain why some people suffering from lack of oxygen, called hypoxia, fare much worse in emergency situations that others.

"Although lack of oxygen might be viewed as an occupational hazard for mountain climbers, for people in intensive care units it can be life threatening," said Mike Grocott of the <a href="http://www.southampton.ac.uk/">University of Southampton.</a> "One in five people admitted to intensive care in the UK each year die and even those that survive might never regain their previous quality of life.”

How Himalayan Sherpas could lead to new medical treatments

People find attractive scientists interesting, but consider their less attractive colleagues to be better scientists, a new study found.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.cam.ac.uk/">University of Cambridge </a>and the <a href="http://www.essex.ac.uk/">University of Essex</a> used pictures of scientists from universities in the U.S. and the UK for the study.

In the first set of studies, the team asked one group of participants to rate the faces on a variety of traits, such as how intelligent the individual looked, how attractive they were, and their perceived age. Then, two other groups of participants indicated how interested they would be in finding out more about each scientist's research or how much the person looked like someone who conducts accurate and important research.

People were more interested in learning about the work of scientists who were physically attractive and who appeared competent and moral, the study found. Interest was also slightly stronger for older scientists, and slightly lower for females. There was no difference in interest between white and non-white scientists.

However, the more attractive and sociable the scientists were perceived to be, the less people considered them to look like a <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ultimate-natural-sunscreen/">scientist</a> who conducts good research.

The researchers also investigated whether facial appearance affects people's choices about which science to engage with by pairing the titles of real science-news stories with faces that had received low or high interest judgments in the first part of the study.

Participants were more likely to choose research that was paired with a photo of an interesting-looking scientist. This bias was present both for male and female scientists, physics and biology news stories, and both video and text formats.

"It seems that people use facial appearance as a source of information when selecting and evaluating science news," said Dr Will Skylark from the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge, leader of the study. "It's not yet clear how much this shapes the spread and acceptance of scientific ideas among the public, but the rapid growth in visual media means it may be an increasingly important issue."

Portions of the human spine structure that enable efficient walking motions were established millions of years earlier than previously thought, according to a new study of a 3.3 million year-old fossil skeleton.

The fossil is known as "Selam," and is a nearly complete skeleton of a 2½ year-old child discovered in Dikika, Ethiopia in 2000 by Zeresenay (Zeray) Alemseged, Professor of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the <a href="http://www.uchicago.edu/">University of Chicago</a> and senior author of the new study.

Analysis revealed the most complete spinal column of any early human relative, including vertebrae, neck and rib cage, the university said.

"Continued and painstaking research on Selam shows that the general structure of the human spinal column emerged over 3.3 million years ago, shedding light on one of the hallmarks of human evolution," Alemseged said. "This type of preservation is unprecedented, particularly in a young individual whose vertebrae are not yet fully fused."

Primates share many features of the human spinal column and rib cage, but the human spine also reflects our distinctive mode of walking upright on two feet. Humans have fewer bones of the back than those of our closest primate relatives, and more vertebrae in the lower back, which allows us to walk effectively. When and how this pattern evolved has been unknown until now as complete sets of <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/prostate-stones-found-skeleton/">vertebrae</a> are rarely preserved.

"Selam has provided us the first glimpse into how our early ancestors' spines were organized," said Carol Ward, Professor of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the <a href="https://medicine.missouri.edu/">University of Missouri School of Medicine</a>, and lead author of the study.

The fossil was taken to the European <a href="http://www.esrf.eu/">Synchrotron Radiation Facility</a> in Grenoble, France, where Alemseged and the research team used high-resolution imaging technology to visualize the bones.

"This technology provides the opportunity to virtually examine aspects of the vertebrae otherwise unattainable from the original specimen," added Fred Spoor, a Professor of Evolutionary Anatomy in the Department of Biosciences at the <a href="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/">University College London</a> and a coauthor of the study.

The scans indicated that Selam had the distinctive thoracic-to-lumbar joint transition found in other fossils of human relatives, but the specimen is the first to show that, like modern humans, human’s earliest ancestors had only 12e thoracic vertebrae and twelve pairs of ribs. That is fewer than in most apes.

"This unusual early human configuration may be a key in developing more accurate scenarios concerning the evolution of bipedality and modern human body shape," said Thierra Nalley, an Assistant Professor of Anatomy at <a href="https://www.westernu.edu/">Western University of Health Sciences</a> in Pomona, California, who is also an author on the paper.

The configuration found in Selam marks a transition toward the type of spinal column that allows humans to be efficient, athletic walkers and runners, the university said.

"We are documenting for the first time in the fossil record the emergence of the number of the vertebrae in our history, when the transition happened from the rib-bearing vertebrae to lower back vertebrae, and when we started to extend the waist," Alemseged said. "This structure and its modification through time is one of the key events in the history of human evolution."

The study is published in the<a href="http://www.pnas.org/"> Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>.

Fossil reveals how the human spine originated

Great apes and humans split several hundred thousand years earlier than previously believed, and it happened in Europe not Africa, two new studies say.

Until now, researchers assumed ape and human lineages diverged five to seven million years ago and that the first pre-humans developed in <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/dusty-winds-western-africa/">Africa</a>.

Research by Madelaine Böhme of the <a href="https://www.uni-tuebingen.de/en/university.html">University of Tübingen </a>in Germany and Nikolai Spassov of the <a href="http://bas.bg/bulgarian-academy-of-science">Bulgarian Academy of Sciences</a> outline a new scenario for the beginning of human history.

The researchers analyzed the two known specimens of the fossil hominid Graecopithecus freybergi: a lower jaw from Greece and an upper premolar from Bulgaria. Using computer tomography, they visualized the internal structures of the fossils and demonstrated that the roots of premolars are widely fused.

"While great apes typically have two or three separate and diverging roots, the roots of Graecopithecus converge and are partially fused - a feature that is characteristic of modern humans, early humans and several pre-humans including Ardipithecus and Australopithecus,” said Böhme.

The lower jaw has additional dental root features, suggesting that the species Graecopithecus freybergi might belong to the pre-human lineage.

 "We were surprised by our results, as pre-humans were previously known only from sub-Saharan Africa," said Jochen Fuss, a Tübingen PhD student who conducted this part of the study.

Graecopithecus is several hundred thousand years older than the oldest potential pre-human from Africa, the six-to-seven million year old Sahelanthropus from Chad.

The researchers dated the Graecopithecus fossil sites in Greece and Bulgaria with physical methods and got a similar age for both fossils - 7.24 and 7.175 million years.


"This dating allows us to move the human-chimpanzee split into the Mediterranean area," said David Begun, a <a href="https://www.utoronto.ca/">University of Toronto</a> paleoanthropologist and co-author of the study. 

At about the same time that the Sahara desert formed in North Africa, a savannah biomed formed in Europe, the research found.

"The incipient formation of a desert in North Africa more than seven million years ago and the spread of savannas in Southern Europe may have played a central role in the splitting of the human and chimpanzee lineages," said Böhme.

The findings are described in two studies published in <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosone/">PLOS ONE</a>.

Plants can detect the sounds of running water moving through pipes or in the soil, a new study found.

The ability to sense the sounds of water helps plants move their roots closer to toward the water source, according to the <a href="http://www.uwa.edu.au/">University of Western Australia</a> study.

Researchers used the common garden pea plant for the study, putting the plant into a container with two tubes at the base, providing options for which direction to grow its roots.

“We then exposed the plant to a series of sounds, including white noise, running water and then a recording of running water under each tube, and observed its behavior,” said lead researcher Monica Gagliano from UWA’s Centre of Evolutionary Biology.

The root systems grew toward the sound of running water, the study found.

“It also was surprising and extraordinary to see that the plant could actually tell when the sound of running water was a recording and when it was real and that the plant did not like the recorded sound,” Gagliano said.

When moisture was readily available in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/soil-co2-climate/">soil</a>, the plant did not respond to the sound of running water. 

“From this we begin to see the complexity of plant interactions with sound in using it to make behavioral decisions,” Gagliano said.

The study can help increase understanding of plant behavior, she added.

“It indicates that the invasion of sewer pipes by tree roots may be based on the plants ‘hearing’ water and shows that their perception of their surroundings is much greater and far more complex than we previously thought,” she said.

It can also help scientists studying noise pollution, Gagliano said.

“In the animal world there is a strong call to understand how acoustic pollution adversely affects populations,” she said. “But now we know plants also need to be part of these studies.”

Study: plants can ‘hear’ running water

Plants can detect the sounds of running water moving through...

Fruit fly brains are tiny, but that doesn’t mean that they’re simple. In fact, the navigational center of a fruit fly’s brain is actually very sophisticated, according to a new study by scientists at the <a href="https://www.janelia.org/">Janelia Research Campus</a>.

Deep within each fruit fly’s brain is a doughnut-shaped structure where neurons and special nerve cells form a delicate compass. Part of the structure, a group of nerve cells called the ellipsoid body, form the needle. 

As a fruit fly travels, even delicate shifts in direction cause activity in the ellipsoid body that allow the fly to know exactly where it is at all times.

"It's a window into something that borders on cognition,” group leader <a href="https://www.janelia.org/lab/jayaraman-lab">Dr. Vivek Jayaraman</a> said in a press release.

The research team had determined this much as early as 2015, but continued their research into the structure of fruit fly brains. Now, they may have determined exactly how this miniscule compass actually works.

A “handlebar” of neurons sit above the ellipsoid body, and the two structures send signals back and forth. Because of its location and the delicate connection, the handlebar neurons can “steer” the ellipsoid body.

"Essentially you have a set of puppet strings by which you can pull the activity one way or another," Jayaraman said.

By genetically engineering the flies so that their neurons glowed when active and then watching them through a specialized microscope, the scientists were able to watch this interplay at work.

While the scientists are still not quite sure how the entire process works, they’ve gained a key to understanding the navigational center of fruit fly brains.

Understanding how navigation works in fruit fly brains could offer some insight into how humans are able to navigate their world so effectively, the scientists said.

The Janelia Research Campus is part of the <a href="http://www.hhmi.org/">Howard Hughes Medical Institute</a>, a philanthropic group that works to advance biomedical research and science education.

The group’s most recent research will be published today in the journal <a href="https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.23496">eLife</a>.

Fruit fly brains are complex navigational tools

Deep portions of Earth's mantle may be as hot now as they were more than 2.5 billion years ago, a new study found.

Researchers studied a set of rocks from the 90 million-year-old Tortugal Suite in Costa Rica and found magnesium concentrations as high as those in “komatiites” from The Archean Eon 2.5 to 4 billion years ago.

“Komatiites are basically superhot versions of Hawaiian-style <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/lava-flow-from-the-kilauea-volcano-in-hawaii/">lava flows</a>," said Esteban Gazel, <a href="https://www.vt.edu/">Virginia Tech</a> Assistant Professor of Geosciences, who led the study. "You can imagine a Hawaiian lava flow, only komatiites were so hot that they glowed white instead of red, and they flowed on a planetary surface with very different atmospheric conditions, more similar to Venus than the planet we live on today."

The study suggests that Earth may still be capable of producing komatiite-like melts. Tortugal lavas most likely originated from the hot core of the Galapagos mantle plume that started producing melts nearly 90 million years ago and has remained active ever since, the study said.

"What is really fascinating about this study is that we show that the planet is still capable of producing lavas as hot as during Archean time period," Gazel said. "Based on our results from Tortugal lavas, we think that mantle plumes are 'tapping' a deep, hot region of the mantle that hasn't cooled very much since the Archean. We think that this region is probably being sustained by heat from the crystallizing core of the planet."

Although the Tortugal Suite was discovered and documented more than 20 years ago, “It wasn't until now that we have the technology and experimental support to better understand the global implications of this location,” said Virginia Tech doctoral student Jarek Trela, first author of the study.

The new data, “offers tremendous opportunity to answer key questions regarding the accretion of the Earth, its thermal evolution, and the geochemical messages that mantle plumes bring to the surface of the planet,” Gazel added.

The study is published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/ngeo/">Nature Geoscience</a>.

Deep Earth may now be as hot as billions of years ago

Deep portions of Earth's mantle may be as hot now...

Coastal flooding will double in frequency over coming decades even with moderate amounts of sea-level rise, a new study says.

With only four to eight inches of sea level rise expected between now and 2050, coastal flooding will more than double, according to the study by from scientists from the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Survey</a> (USGS), the <a href="http://www.uic.edu/">University of Illinois at Chicago</a> and the <a href="http://www.hawaii.edu/">University of Hawaii</a>.

In most coastal regions, the amount of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rising-sea-levels-inland/">sea level</a> rise occurring in the coming decades is small, yet even gradual sea level rise can rapidly increase the frequency and severity of coastal flooding, according to the new study.

Previous studies of flooding caused by sea level rise focused on tide gauges and did not consider elevated water levels from waves leading to an underestimation of potential impact.

“Using models rather than individual tide gauges provides a comprehensive picture of the widespread vulnerability rather than at sparse points where observed data exist,” said lead author of the study, Sean Vitousek, who was a post-doctoral fellow at the USGS when he began this study. Vitousek is now a professor in the Department of Civil &amp; Materials Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Tropical regions will see the greatest increase in flooding, according to the study.

The economies of in low-lying Pacific island nations will be damaged, along with many of the world's largest populated low-lying deltas (such as the Ganges, Indus, Yangtze, Mekong and Irrawaddy Rivers), the study found.

“In the Tropics, today’s 50-year water level event will occur every 5 years with just 10 cm of sea level rise,” said USGS geologist and study coauthor, Patrick Barnard.

Most tropical atoll islands are on average only 1-2 meters above present sea level, the study said.

“And even in the high tropical islands such as Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, Indonesia, and others, the majority of the population and critical infrastructure is located on a narrow coastal fringe at low elevations (1-2 m above present sea level) and thus susceptible to this increased flood frequency,” said USGS geologist and coauthor, Curt Storlazzi.

Researchers have identified areas of the primate brain dedicated exclusively to analyzing social interactions.

The findings could help explain the origins of “theory of mind,” the human ability to understand what other people are thinking, <a href="https://www.rockefeller.edu/">Rockefeller University</a> said.

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify those parts of macaque monkeys' brains that become active when the animals watched different kinds of videos.

The team expected that areas containing specialized brain cells called mirror neurons, which fire when an animal performs an action such as grasping a stick or hitting a ball, or sees another animal performing the same action, would light up when the macaques watched other macaques playing with toys.

But the macaques' mirror neuron regions also showed activity when the animals watched their fellow monkeys interacting socially, and even when they watched objects colliding with other objects.

The findings suggest that the motor neuron system, which also exists in the human brain, could be more involved than previously thought in understanding a variety of both social and non-social interactions.

Those areas of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/facial-recognition-technology/">monkey’s</a> brain that respond selectively to specific visual shapes- faces, bodies, or objects got an extra boost when the animals watched videos of monkeys interacting with objects. It perked up even more in response to videos of monkey-on-monkey social interactions. 

This suggests that the same parts of the brain that are responsible for analyzing visual shapes might also be partly responsible for analyzing both physical and social interactions, the authors said.

The team also discovered that additional areas of the brain, far removed from those face- and body-selective areas, also lit up in response to social interactions. The researchers even identified a portion of the network that responded exclusively to social interactions, remaining nearly silent in their absence.

“That was both unexpected and mind-boggling," says researcher Winrich Freiwald, who added that no other study has shown evidence of a network in the brain going dark when denied its preferred input.

Small parrots called parrotlets use a technique called “wing-assisted hopping” to conserve energy when hopping from branch to branch, according to a new <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a> study.

The birds, who live from <a href="https://www.earth.com/image/scorpion-reef-gulf-mexico/">Mexico</a> to South America, use their wings as a booster engine during long hops from to branch to branch while foraging, the study found.

It requires less energy than simply flying, and is a strategy that could have been used by dinosaurs before they developed full flight, the authors said. 

Parrotlets can jump up to 20 cm without using their wings, but can reach up to 75 cm with a little wing help, lead author Diana D. Chin told the website <a href="https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us">Motherboard</a>.  

There were four parrots in the study and the force they used to lift off was measured using sensors in the branches.

The study, published in <a href="http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/5/e1603041">Scientific Advances</a> can lead to spinoff research on the evolution of foraging dinosaurs, Chin said.

"We modelled what would happen if a theropod combined a long jump with a partial wingbeat," she said. "Early dinos could have gotten more bang for their buck by adding that a partial wing beat."

Japan and China have successfully extracted a frozen fossil fuel called “combustible ice” from the seafloor off their coastlines, moving commercial development of the material closer to reality.

The official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the fossil fuel was successfully mined by a drilling rig operating in the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/tropical-storm-aere-drifting-in-the-south-china-sea/">South China Sea</a> on Thursday. Chinese Minister of Land and Resources Jiang Daming declared the event a breakthrough moment for a potential  "global energy revolution."

Two weeks earlier, a drilling crew in Japan reported a similar successful operation off the Shima Peninsula.

However, experts warned that large-scale production could be many years away - and if not done properly could flood the atmosphere with climate-changing greenhouse gases.

Methane hydrate offers Japan the chance to reduce its reliance on imported fuels. It could also serve as a cleaner substitute for coal-burning power plants and steel factories China that have polluted much of the country with smog.

The South China Sea has become a focal point of regional political tensions as China has claimed huge swaths of disputed territory as its own. Previous sea oil exploration efforts by China met resistance, especially from Vietnam, but its methane hydrate operation was described as being outside the most hotly contested areas.

Methane hydrate has been found beneath seafloors and buried inside Arctic permafrost and beneath Antarctic ice. The United States and India are also researching technologies to capture the fuel.

Estimates of worldwide reserves range from 280 trillion cubic meters (10,000 trillion cubic feet) up to 2,800 trillion cubic meters (100,000 trillion cubic feet), according to the <a href="https://www.eia.gov/">U.S. Energy Information Administration</a>. 

By comparison, total worldwide production of natural gas was 3.5 billion cubic meters (124 billion cubic feet) in 2015, the most recent year available.

Methane hydrate reserves could meet global gas demands for 80 to 800 years at current consumption rates.

For decades, however, private and state-owned energy companies have been unable to extract the fuel at a profit. Extraction techniques, which can use large amounts of water or carbon dioxide, are expensive.

The industry consensus is that commercial development won't happen until at least 2030. Smaller scale output could happen as early as 2020, said Tim Collett, a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

"The path to understanding when or if gas hydrates will be commercially produced will need many similar and more extended testing efforts," Collett told the <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AS_CHINA_JAPAN_COMBUSTIBLE_ICE?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2017-05-19-05-48-55">AP.</a>

Scientists have discovered a refuge for coral reefs protected by the environment from climate change, according to a new study.

These “reefs of hope” are in northern Mozambique and the Quirimbas Islands, according to a study by the environmental group <a href="https://www.wcs.org/">WCS</a>.

“Northern Mozambique Quirimbas reefs have a variety of refugia, environmental variability, and high diversity that give these reefs a high potential to adapt to rapid climate change,” said Tim McClanahan, WCS Senior Conservation Zoologist and lead author of the study.

The first refuge is an environment that has enough variability for <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hawaii-ban-sunscreens-reefs/">corals</a> to adapt but lacks temperature extremes that would kill them, the study said. A second is deeper, cooler water but with the full spectrum of light that allows many species to thrive and avoid heat stress.

The bad news is that the reefs are showing signs of overfishing, according to the study, published in journal <a href="https://eco-sphere.com/">Ecosphere</a>.

Many nearby reefs were not fished sustainably and fishers were therefore migrating to the second refuge to find profitable fishing, the research found.

Weak compliance with local fisheries laws needs to be reversed to maintain the fish that help to keep reefs healthy, the study said.

Sea urchins can damage corals if not controlled by predators such as triggerfish, while algae can suffocate corals unless kept in check by grazing fish species, WCS said.

The report recommends closing certain areas to fishing and enforcing regulations in the Quirimbas National Park, which was established many years ago, but has failed to implement restrictions. 

Research is showing that properly managing marine protected areas (MPAs) continues to remain a challenge due to insufficient personnel and expenditures needed to enforce management. Another recent<a href="https://newsroom.wcs.org/News-Releases/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/9933/Lack-of-Staffing-Funds-Prevent-Marine-Protected-Areas-from-Realizing-Full-Potential.aspx"> WCS-co-authored study</a> said widespread lack of personnel and funds are preventing MPAs from reaching their full potential.

Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.

Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-combination-of-climate-factors">The combination of climate factors</h2>



The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."



This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.



Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.

William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.



Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.



This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.

The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified Eospermatopteris, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.



All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-significance">Scientific significance</h2>



Before this finding, the Gilboa forest, located 25 miles (40 kilometers) away, held the "oldest forest" title. Cairo's trees are 2-3 million years older, showing that complex forest ecosystems developed much faster than scientists believed possible.



Patricia Gensel, a <a href="https://www.unc.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of North Carolina</a> paleobotanist, notes: "The size of those root systems is really changing the picture. They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).



Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.



Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
