Inside our bodies, countless decisions play out silently at the cellular level. Some cells divide, some die, and others are forced out when they no longer serve their purpose. 



A study from <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s College London</a> and the <a href="https://www.crick.ac.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francis Crick Institute</a> reveals that epithelial cells use electricity to spot weak neighbors and remove them. This breakthrough offers fresh insight into how diseases like cancer and stroke arise when energy balance within cells is disturbed.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-renew-constantly">Cells renew constantly</h2>



Epithelial <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/hemifusome-newly-discovered-organelle-inside-human-cells-with-immense-potential/">cells</a> form the barrier that lines organs, renewing rapidly to stay protective. Their balance depends on extrusion, the process of ejecting damaged or excess cells. This keeps tissues tightly packed and efficient. 



If extrusion falters, cell numbers become chaotic, creating openings for disease. Without this constant regulation, unhealthy cells may linger, disrupt organ integrity, and interfere with critical signaling pathways. 



Over time, these disturbances can weaken the protective barrier, encourage unchecked growth, and increase vulnerability to conditions such as cancer, chronic inflammation, or infections that compromise overall tissue health and resilience.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-electricity-targets-weak-cells">Electricity targets weak cells</h2>



Earlier work showed that overcrowding forces some <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-did-the-first-cells-life-form-on-earth-scientists-think-they-finally-figured-it-out/">cells</a> to be squeezed out mechanically. The latest discovery goes further. It shows that extrusion is not random but targets energy-poor cells. Crowding pushes sodium into cells through specialized ion channels, altering their electrical signals. 



Healthy cells restore balance, but weak ones cannot, triggering shrinkage and eventual extrusion. This reveals a precise surveillance system where tissues actively monitor cellular energy, ensuring only the strongest cells remain. 



Such control preserves organ stability, while defects in this mechanism may promote disease progression and unchecked cellular growth.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-sense-crowding-with-electricity">Cells sense crowding with electricity</h2>



The researchers noticed a striking prelude to extrusion: cells briefly shrank before being expelled. This stage, termed homeostatic early shrinkage, reflects water leaving the cell. 



Roughly 70 percent of extruding cells undergo this <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/cells-vomit-waste-to-speed-up-healing-in-our-body/">shrinkage</a>. It is not caused by contractile forces but by ion channels regulating water movement. Key players include the potassium channels Kv1.1 and Kv1.2, and the chloride channel SWELL1.



The study revealed that an epithelial sodium channel, ENaC, senses crowding. It acts as a tension detector, letting sodium rush in when cells press against one another.



If a cell has enough ATP, it pumps sodium back out and stabilizes. If not, depolarization occurs, potassium and chloride exit, water follows, and the cell shrinks, crossing the threshold that triggers extrusion.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-low-energy-as-a-trigger">Low energy as a trigger</h2>



Time-lapse experiments revealed that cells destined for extrusion show falling ATP levels before they depolarize and shrink. When ATP levels were artificially lowered, extrusion increased. 



This shows energy deficiency directly selects <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-space-changes-our-cells-insights-from-the-iss/">cells</a> for removal. In essence, epithelial tissue runs a built-in fitness test: cells unable to maintain their electrical balance are expelled.



"We see this sodium channel acting as a sensor, exposing cells with the least amount of energy and targeting those cells for death," noted study lead author Dr. Saranne Mitchell. 



"This mechanism gives epithelia a constant surveillance system to rapidly detect weak cells and remove them. It's like an electrical quality-control check, keeping tissues robust and functional."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-diseases">Implications for diseases</h2>



The study highlights how epithelial tissues are not passive layers but dynamic communities constantly testing their members. By identifying weaker cells early, they can preserve strength and protect organ function.



"By revealing that cells with low energy are targeted for extrusion, our work also adds a new layer into how metabolism can impact many diseases," said Professor Jody Rosenblatt.



"This new insight could suggest how overconsumption, through eating more and consuming more calories, might override this 'low energy trigger' for extrusion and prevent the elimination of defective cells, allowing them to accumulate into cancers." 



"It might also reveal how energy deprivation following a stroke, caused by impacted blood supply, could lead to excess extrusion and organ damage."



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cells-use-electricity-effectively">Cells use electricity effectively</h2>



This model highlights energy sufficiency as a deciding factor in cell survival. Much like how mitochondria regulate apoptosis, epithelial extrusion uses energy balance as a checkpoint. 



The findings also connect to conditions like cystic fibrosis and cancer, where ion channel malfunctions are common. By linking ion flow, energy, and crowding, this study reframes how tissues maintain integrity.



The discovery paints epithelia as more than static barriers. They are dynamic, electrically sensitive tissues constantly probing their members for weakness. 



Cells that cannot meet the energy demands are removed for the greater good of the tissue. Even the faintest electrical flicker within these cellular communities can tip the balance between health and disease.



The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09514-w" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nature</a>.

Using animal fossils as clues, paleoanthropologists are piecing together what the environment that gave rise to early humans might have looked like.

Researchers with Arizona State University’s <a href="https://iho.asu.edu/">Institute of Human Origins</a> have been piecing together the puzzle of the ancient ecology of Ethiopia’s lower Awash Valley for years. The site in eastern Africa is where <a href="http://www.asu.edu/">Arizona State</a> anthropologists discovered the oldest known evidence of the Homo genus, a jawbone estimated to be 2.8 million years old, in 2013.

Since then, paleoanthropologists have used animal fossils to try and infer the environment that was home to this ancient human ancestor.

The fossil record of an area can help scientists piece together ancient environs, based on the primary adaptations of most of the animals that once lived there. For example, if most of the animal fossils in the area from that time period show adaptations for wooded areas – teeth that are adapted for eating leaves, long necks, prehensile tails or paws meant for climbing – that offers clues to an environment that may no longer exist.

The Awash Valley is desert scrubland now, but animal fossils from 3.5 to 1 million years ago show the area may have been a verdant grassland at the time the ancient jawbone’s owner was alive, the ASU researchers found.

Almost all of the animal fossils from the same time period found with the Homo jawbone in the lower Awash show evidence that the animals they came from fed on grass, according to the researchers. This was true even of animals that they knew fed on leaves before that time period, they said.

Researchers used stable isotopes to properly date the fossils they studied.

The shift in the region from woodlands to grasslands indicates a cooling period that coincides with the disappearance of Australopithecus and the rise of early human ancestors. 

However, unlike the surrounding animals, early humans’ diet didn’t seem to change much as it shifted from one genus to another.

"We weren't necessarily surprised that the diet of early Homo was similar to Australopithecus, but we were surprised that its diet didn't change when those of all the other animals on the landscape did,” co-author Dr. Christopher Campisano said in a press release.

Still, the change in environment seems to have played some role in the evolution from Australopithecus to early human.

"Although Lucy's species persisted through many environmental changes in the Hadar sequence, it seems the species was unable to persist as really open environments spread in the Afar during the late Pliocene," said co-author John Rowan, a graduate student at ASU.

The researchers plan to use the same methodologies to see if other early hominin sites show similar environmental shifts.

The study will be published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/natecolevol/">Nature Ecology and Evolution</a>. Research was funded by the <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation</a> and the <a href="https://www.templeton.org/">John Templeton Foundation</a>.

Food tossed in trash cans contains nutrients that could help many Americans meet daily dietary requirements, a new study says.

Each day, 1,217 calories per person are squandered, according to the <a href="https://www.jhu.edu/">Johns Hopkins University</a> study published in the <a href="http://www.jandonline.org/">Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics</a>  .

Discarded food contains large amounts of vitamin D, fiber and potassium that could help people get the food they need to meet their daily recommended intake, said the study, the first to quantify the nutritional value of discarded food.

Perishable foods such as fruits and vegetables are lost at particularly high rates, the researchers said.

They hope the findings will raise awareness of food <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/14-billion-dollars-edible-foods-trashed/">waste</a> and how to prevent it. The data can be as a baseline for tracking intervention impacts, the authors said. 

"Although only a portion of discarded food can realistically be made available for human consumption, efforts to redistribute surplus foods where appropriate and prevent food waste in the first place could increase the availability of nutrients for Americans, while saving money and natural resources," the study said. "The U.S. has established a target of halving food loss and waste by 2030. This research supports the case for action and for registered dietitian nutritionists to bring their expertise to the effort."

Researchers used data from the <a href="https://www.usda.gov/">USDA</a> <a href="https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/">National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference</a> to calculate the nutritional value of retail and consumer level waste of 213 commodities.

Americans waste food at an alarming rate throughout the food supply chain with  an estimated at 31-40 percent of the post-harvest food supply discarded, the study said.

Just the fiber discarded each day is equivalent to the fiber recommended daily allow for 74 million adult women.

One modern quirk has researchers wondering whether human ancestors could have navigated the treetops far longer than previously believed. 

The “light fingertip touch” strategy that helps modern humans avoid falls boosted study participants’ balance by 30 percent in a simulated forest canopy, scientists from the <a href="http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/">University of Birmingham</a> found in a new study.

“Some argue that arboreal bipedalism was prohibitively risky for hominins whose increasingly modern anatomy prevented them from gripping branches with their feet. Balancing on two legs is indeed challenging for humans under optimal conditions let alone in forest canopy, which is physically and visually highly dynamic,” the researchers wrote in their paper, published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-01265-7">Scientific Reports</a>.

The study looked at the modern human behavior of lightly resting fingertips against a solid support when feeling off-balance. But the improvement in balance shows that human ancestors may have used the same strategy – even as they were learning to walk on two legs – to keep from falling while traveling through the trees.

Study participants were asked to stand and move on a “branch-like bouncy springboard” while watching a video of swaying branches. The moving environment and images destabilized them as much as a blindfold might have, the scientists found.

However, a light fingertip touch on a stable surface improved their balance and allowed their thigh muscles to work less at providing stability, the study showed.

“This demonstrates how a light touch strategy could have been central to our ancestor’s ability to avoid falls and reduce the mechanical and metabolic cost of arboreal feeding and movement,” the researchers wrote. 

The team of scientists believe that the adaptation shows that human ancestors could have continued to use forest canopies to travel and for other activities, even as they began adapting to use tools. Along with other recent studies, this calls into question the assumption that early human ancestors transitioned smoothly and permanently from arboreal living to walking on the ground.

“Instead ancestral bipedal hominins appear to have continued to exploit tree canopy habitats well into our own genus Homo,” the researchers wrote.

When LSD was made illegal in the United States more than 50 years ago, research on the drug ground to a near halt. Advocates of LSD microdosing, however, claim the psychedelic could help boost creativity, treat alcohol addiction and psychological disorders, and more.

But before scientists can study microdosing’s effects on mental health, they need a baseline. 

That’s why Amanda Feilding wants to launch the first LSD microdosing study, pitting humans on either LSD or a placebo against artificial intelligence to play the game of Go. Her goal is to see whether the psychedelic can boost human performance – and winning streaks. 

Feilding, the founder of the <a href="http://beckleyfoundation.org/">Beckley Foundation</a> that supports neuroscientific research into mind-altering drugs, hopes to show that LSD can be useful in small doses.

Why Go? Feilding used to play the game with friends regularly, and found that she tended to win more if she dosed herself with LSD first, especially when she was playing against someone not using the drug. 

"For me that was a very clear indication that it improves cognitive function, particularly a kind of intuitive pattern recognition,” Feilding told <a href="https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/first-ever-lsd-microdosing-study-will-pit-the-human-brain-against-ai">Motherboard</a>.

Her study would be the first to look at the benefits of LSD microdosing. Until now, all data on the effects of small doses of LSD have been self-reported, like Feilding’s own experiences.

In the study, she plans to give 20 participants 10mg, 20mg or 50mg doses of LSD or a placebo, on four different occasions. Then, the participants will undergo MRI and MEG scans while performing a number of tasks, such as completing neuropsychological tests and playing Go against a computer.

It will be only the second time test participants have their brains scanned while on LSD, and the first time on microdoses.

The LSD microdosing study is being supported by <a href="http://www.fundamental.nyc/">Fundamental</a>, which has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support it along with additional studies into LSD and the drug MDMA.

Fundamental is the organization of Rodrigo Niño, CEO of <a href="https://www.prodigynetwork.com/">Prodigy</a> and a New York real estate magnate. He launched the company after being diagnosed with end-stage cancer, which he survived.

“That near death experience changed me in a number of ways. It opened the door for somebody like me – science driven, rational, numbers driven – to start looking for alternative treatments to ease my suffering when traditional medicine failed me,” Niño continued.

After finding relief from end-of-life anxiety with ayahuasca, he decided to help fund research into psychedelic drugs and how they could aid in psychological disorders from anxiety and PTSD to addiction.

He’s teamed up with Feilding and other scientists to study LSD’s effects on end-of-life distress, alcoholism and other issues.

“For decades, we have seen anecdotal evidence that microdosing improves mood and well-being, enhances cognition, increases productivity, and boosts creativity,” Feilding said in a press release. “Now we have the opportunity to undertake the first controlled scientific investigation, including the latest brain imaging technology, into the effects of microdosing LSD, thereby finally establishing whether the claims about its benefits are true.”

A common marine sponge hosts bacteria that specialize in the production of toxic compounds nearly identical to man-made fire retardants, according to a new study.

The new findings by researchers at at the<a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu/"> Scripps Institution of Oceanography</a> at the<a href="https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/"> University of California</a>, could help scientists better understand the human health implications of a powerful group of chemical compounds, known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

"For many years scientists have been finding clues that suggested nature was making these compounds," said SIO marine chemist Brad Moore, a senior author of the study. "Now that we understand how they are produced in the marine environment, we are exploring why they exist, and the human health concerns associated with them."

Vinayak Agarwal, a researcher at SIO, re-launched the new study first started nearly 50 years ago by SIO chemist John Faulkner, an early pioneer in the study of natural products from the sea. Agarwal continued Faulkner's investigation into the source of toxic PDBEs, found in large quantities in the world's oceans.

“For the first time we were able to conclusively show that genes and enzymes produced in bacteria from sponges are responsible for the production of these compounds toxic to humans," said Agarwal, co-first author of the paper along with Scripps researcher Jessica Blanton.

In 2014, Agarwal and colleagues were first to discover that unrelated free-living marine bacteria produce the fire retardant compounds naturally.

Researchers took the research a step further by using genome "mining" and environmental DNA sequencing to identify the specific genes and enzymes involved in the overproduction of the toxic molecules in sponges.

Marine sponges obtain food and oxygen by filtering seawater through the pores and channels in their bodies. This constant flow of water means that the immobile animals host many <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/climate-change-unleashing-viruses/">bacteria</a>, viruses and fungi in complex microbiomes.

Researchers collected 18 sponge samples for the study  then isolated the various components in the complex mixture of organisms from the sponge's tissues to identify the specific genes and enzymes that code for the production of PBDEs.

The genome "mining" approach along with metagenomic sequencing gave the scientists a way to connect the natural chemicals produced by organisms back to the enzymes that constructed them.

"We care about naturally produced PBDEs because they end up in the food chain," said NIEHS's Frederick Tyson. "Preliminary data from this research team suggest that some naturally occurring PDBEs may be even more toxic than those that are man-made, so we need to develop a better understanding of these compounds."

The next step is to mine the genes and enzymes in other marine species to found out what other organisms are making similar toxic compounds and why.

When babies divide colors into categories, it’s rooted in their biology, not language, a new study found.

According to the study performed by the <a href="http://www.sussex.ac.uk/">University of Sussex</a>, humans see color as a result of cells known as cones, which are sensitive to either long, short or medium wavelengths of light. The way in which the brain interprets combinations of signals from these cells allows us to see a whole spectrum of color.

Previous research has shown that babies group colors based on their language, with different languages having different groupings.

The new study suggests there there is a biological origin to color categories, which is later influenced by culture and environment.

In the study, four of the infants’ color boundaries were found to map to the four extremes produced by signals from different cone types when they are combined and interpreted by the brain.

“These results are important because they strongly support the view that the universality of color categories seen in world languages has a biological origin, since color categorical structure is demonstrated long before infants ‘learn’ their native words for the color categories,” Delwin Lindsey, professor of psychology at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State University</a> who was not involved in the work, told the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/">Guardian</a>.

After children have developed language skills, their color categorization can be changed, researchers said.

“If you [use] a language that doesn’t make a distinction between green and blue, for example, then as they grow up babies and children learn to no longer make that distinction,” Alice Skelton, first author of the research and a doctoral candidate at the University of Sussex, told the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/">Guardian</a>.

Research should now explore how categories shift as we develop language, she said.

Writing in the journal<a href="http://www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1612881114"> Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences</a>, Skelton and colleagues describe how they analyzed the response of 176 babies, between four and six months old, to patches of color.

From the webcam recordings, the team examined a phenomenon known as novelty preference: when <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/first-3-parent-babies-uk/">babies</a> look longer at a “new” color they perceive it to be different to a familiar one.

If a baby consistently looks longer at the new color – it suggests the color is perceived as belonging to a different category.

The team then compared these color categories to those found in English, and to 110 languages from non-industrialized countries.

The results revealed that babies have five color categories: red, yellow, green, blue and purple. The team then compared these color categories to those found in English, and to 110 languages from non-industrialised countries.

“This [new study] is adding to a solid body of work showing that babies, before they have learned any kind of mastery of their language, are already busy [making] the building blocks of the concepts that they are going to have,” Asifa Majid of <a href="http://www.ru.nl/english/">Radboud University</a> in the Netherland, told the Guardian.

It is still possible that the colors that babies are surrounded with from birth – for example in baby toys – could be preconditioning them to categorize colors in a particular way, Majid said. The study should be repeated with babies from different cultures to explore whether the five categories are truly ubiquitous, she added.

It could take oceans a million years to recover from a dramatic drop in oxygen that would cause mass extinctions of sea life, a new study said.

Researchers at the <a href="https://www.exeter.ac.uk/">University of Exeter</a> say it is “critical” to limit carbon emissions in order to prevent the depletion of oxygen from oceans, a condition known as “anoxia.”

Oceans can recover from anoxia, but it would take a million years, according to the study. 

"Once you get into a major event like anoxia, it takes a long time for the Earth's system to rebalance," said lead researcher Sarah Baker, an Exeter geographer. "This shows the vital importance of limiting disruption to the carbon cycle to regulate the Earth system and keep it within habitable bounds."

The researchers studied the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, which took place 183 million years ago and depleted oxygen in Earth's oceans, causing <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fossil-footprints-recovery-extinction/">mass extinction</a> of marine life.

Numerical models predicted increased burial of organic carbon - due to less decomposition and more plant and marine productivity in the warmer, carbon-rich environment, should drive a rise in atmospheric oxygen, which would end an anoxic event after a million years.

Scientists tested the theory by examining fossil charcoal samples to see evidence of wildfires - which would be more common when oxygen levels are high.

They found a period of increased wildfire activity that started one million years after the onset of the anoxic event, and lasted for about 800,000 years.

"We argue that this major increase in fire activity was primarily driven by increased atmospheric oxygen," said Baker. "Our study provides the first fossil-based evidence that such a change in atmospheric oxygen levels could occur in a period of one million years."

An increase in fire activity may have helped end ocean anoxia by burning and reducing the amount of plants on land. Plants can help to erode rocks on the land that contain nutrients needed for marine life.

Less marine life would mean less oxygen being used in the oceans, and could therefore help the oceans rebuild a higher oxygen content, ending anoxia.

It may be essential to maintain the natural functioning of wildfire activity to help regulate the Earth system in the long-term, the researchers said.

The study is published in the journal <a href="https://www.nature.com/ncomms/">Nature Communications</a>.

Study: Depleted oceans could take a million years to recover

Researchers have uncovered three previously unknown subspecies of the snow leopard.

A study of snow leopard scat from wildlife trails and marking sites identified three primary genetic clusters, according to a the study published in the <a href="https://academic.oup.com/jhered">Journal of Heredity</a>.

The Northern group was found in the Altai region, the Central group in the core Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau, and the Western group in the Tian Shan, Pamir, and trans-Himalaya regions.

The patterns of variation within the snow leopard subspecies suggest a 'barrier effect' due to the desert basins in the area, with the northern subspecies isolated by the Gobi Desert and the central and western species divided by the trans-Himalayas, the study said. 

The snow leopard occupies vast area across 12 countries in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/desert-dust-air-pollution/">Asia</a> and is considered the world's most elusive large big cat.

 It is the largest carnivore in the high-altitude habitat in many areas and is under substantial threat throughout its range.

"This study is important as it provides the first glimpse of how snow leopard populations are structured and connected,” Jan E. Janecka, assistant professor at <a href="http://www.duq.edu/">Duquesne University</a> in Iowa and an author of the study. “In a nutshell, populations that are connected with other populations, are more stable and have a greater chance of persisting.”

The study provides a better understanding of the evolution and ecology of the snow leopard, Janecka said.

“Our study highlights the need for transboundary initiatives to protect this species, and other wildlife in Asia,” she added.

Study finds that beauty requires thought. Experiencing beauty requires thought, while pleasures, like eating or sex, can be beautiful, a new study says.

The research was designed to test a question that has long preoccupied philosophers such as Immanuel Kant who claimed beauty requires thought, unlike sensuous pleasure, which, he said, can never be beautiful.  

The new <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/daily-meditation-works-wonders/">research,</a> published in <a href="http://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>, concludes Kent was right on the first count, wrong on the second one.

"We find that beauty, when it happens, is strongly pleasurable, and that strong pleasure is always beautiful," says researcher Denis Pelli of <a href="https://www.nyu.edu/">New York University</a>. "Strong pleasure and beauty both require thought."

Pelli and fellow NYU researcher Aenne Brielmann asked 62 people to indicate how much pleasure and beauty they felt while they saw an image, tasted a candy, or touched a soft teddy bear. Participants then rated their experience of each object on a four-point beauty scale.

In another round of the experiment, participants were asked to repeat what they'd done earlier, this time while they were distracted with a secondary task.

Distraction didn’t change the experience of viewing non-beautiful objects but diminished the experience of beauty, which does require thought.

Also, about 30 percent of participants said they'd definitely experienced beauty after sucking on a candy or touching a soft teddy bear.

"Our findings show that many other things besides art can be beautiful--even candy," Brielmann says. "But for maximum pleasure, nothing beats undistracted beauty."

The findings show  that although beauty subjective and ephemeral , it can still be measured and mathematically modeled and has practical applications, the researchers say.

"These are important insights for people who want to create beauty, such as artists or museum curators," Brielmann added. "You should, for example, not distract people in museums if you want them to find beauty in the art."

High-level officials from the world's eight Arctic nations, including U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, are meeting in Alaska as the Arctic Council amid President Donald Trump’s call for more oil drilling and development.

Key issues such as climate change, development, and oil drilling will provide a backdrop as the chairmanship of the Arctic Council council passes from the U.S. to Finland.

"We are unsure what the Trump administration thinks about the Arctic region in general, about the Arctic Council in particular and about its role," said Victoria Herrmann, president of <a href="http://www.thearcticinstitute.org/">The Arctic Institute</a>, a Washington, D.C.-based group that provides research to shape Arctic policy.

The Arctic Council is an advisory body promoting cooperation among member nations and indigenous groups and focusing on sustainable development and environmental protection of the Arctic.

Protesters gathered in a city park nearby to denounce the presence of Tillerson, who was CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp.

"My message for Rex Tillerson is: Alaska shouldn't be for sale for what's in our earth," Hannah Hill, 36, who works at a Fairbanks soup kitchen, told the <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_ARCTIC_COUNCIL?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2017-05-11-05-27-15">AP</a>. "This place is beautiful, and this place is delicate, and what already is happening on in the Arctic will affect the rest of the Earth. And that is science."

Pat Lambert, a retired <a href="https://www.alaska.edu/">University of Alaska</a> math professor, attended the rally because he believes climate change is a serious problem. He told the <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_ARCTIC_COUNCIL?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2017-05-11-05-27-15">AP</a> he thinks Tillerson "should get away from his cronies in the oil business and start listening to the people of Alaska, for instance, and the people of the world who are so interested in these issues."

The United States - an <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ice-loss-antarctic-peninsula/">Arctic</a> country because of the state of Alaska - is joined on the council by Canada, Russia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

The U.S. began chairing the council two years ago. Much of the council's work during that time stemmed from the policies of President Barack Obama, who made climate change and the Arctic priorities of his administration.

Arctic council meets in Alaska amid drilling controversy

How often have you heard someone say that a dog’s sense of smell is a thousand times better than a human’s? Did you believe them? Well, according to new research published in the journal <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/">Science</a>, that’s all one big myth.

John McGann, a neuroscientist at <a href="http://newbrunswick.rutgers.edu/">Rutgers University – New Brunswick</a>, has been studying the olfactory system for the past 14 years. He spent the last year reviewing the long history of research that has created the myth that our sense of smell as humans was inferior to many animal species due to the size of our olfactory bulb. “For so long people failed to stop and question this claim, even people who study the sense of smell for a living,” says McGann. “The fact is the sense of smell is just as good in humans as in other mammals, like rodents and dogs.”

In the past, it was thought that humans could only detect around 10,000 different odors. But according to McGann, we may be able to differentiate between up to one trillion different odors. He has determined that the human olfactory bulb, which is responsible for sending signals to parts of the human brain that help identify scents, is actually large and contains a similar number of neurons compared to other <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mammals-shrink-planet-warms/">mammals</a>.

The 19th century brain surgeon Paul Broca may have been the originator of the myth, as he claimed that the smaller size of the olfactory area in humans compared to the rest of the brain meant that humans had free will. He believed that other animals that had to rely on smell to survive were held hostage by this ability. However, McGann now says that there is no evidence to support this belief.

“Dogs may be better than humans at discriminating the urines on a fire hydrant and humans may be better than dogs at discriminating the odors of fine wine, but few such comparisons have actual experimental support," McGann explains.

McGann believes it’s important this myth be dispelled, as smell strongly influences human behavior, memories, and emotions. Humans’ sense of smell also plays a role in how we interact with others, chose romantic partners, and decide what we want to eat. Smell can even be a trigger in activating PTSD.

He hopes that this type of research continues, as “some research suggests that losing the sense of smell may be the start of memory problems and diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” says McGann. “One hope is that the medical world will begin to understand the importance of smell and that losing it is a big deal.”

Some grizzly bears in <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/yellowstone-wolves-hunting-bison/">Yellowstone National Park</a> are eating more plants and berries after climate change has caused a decline of whitebark pine trees, which provide food for the animals.

Shorter and milder winters have increased beetle infestations of the whitebark pine, which are now listed as endangered by the <a href="https://www.iucn.org/">International Union for Conservation of Nature</a>. 

A new study by scientists at the <a href="https://ucsd.edu/">University of California San Diego</a> and <a href="http://www.unity.edu/">Unity College</a> found that some grizzlies at Yellowstone continue to forage for whitebark pine seeds while others are shifting to plants and berries.

"Whitebark pine trees have declined due to an introduced fungal disease called blister rust, and, more recently, to increased infestation by the mountain pine beetle, which is exacerbated by climate change," said study coauthor Carolyn Kurle, an assistant professor at UC San Diego's Division of Biological Sciences. "Such declines further highlight the need to monitor diets of grizzlies as the environment continues to change."

Lead author Jack Hopkins, an assistant professor at Unity College, and his team measured stable isotopes in bear hair and related their abundances to those found in their foods.

"Stable isotope analysis is a powerful ecological tool for reconstructing the diets of animals," said Hopkins. "Instead of investigating the diets of animals based on what's eliminated (feces), we estimate the importance of major food sources to animals based on what's assimilated into their tissues.”

Previous research has shown that whitebark pine seeds are raided by grizzlies in the fall, fueling reproduction and ensuring the survival of grizzlies in the region. One of the main reasons grizzly bears have remained protected for decades is because it has not been clear how declines in whitebark pine trees will impact population trends over the long term.

Since the new study is limited to a small area in the region and a small number of bears, the researchers recommend a large-scale study and urge others to use their new modeling framework to investigate the diets of other species of concern.

"Such analyses could be used to monitor grizzly bear recovery efforts and inform other wildlife conservation and management programs worldwide," Hopkins said.

This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.

Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.

Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Volcanic activity typically releases CO2 into the atmosphere, creating a greenhouse effect that keeps Earth warm.



Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below 200 parts per million – less than half of today's levels – glaciation engulfed the entire planet.

The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.



The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.



The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, demonstrates the varied regional impacts of climate change. While many locations face rising water levels, Greenland's bedrock is literally rising above the surrounding seas.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.



Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.



The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.



Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.

The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."

Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.



This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

Today's Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.acs.org/">American Chemical Society</a> (ACS) reveals that proteins on flu viruses are actually flexible, tilting and waving in a “breath-like” motion. According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.



"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
