A recent analysis of the Sapphire Canyon mudstone core, drilled by NASA’s Perseverance rover in July 2024, adds new and convincing evidence to the ongoing search for life on Mars.



The study describes minerals and textures that - on Earth - are often linked to microbial activity. At the same time, the authors stress that some unknown, nonbiological chemistry could also explain the signals.



“This finding by Perseverance is the closest we have ever come to discovering life on Mars. The identification of a potential biosignature on the Red Planet is a groundbreaking discovery, and one that will advance our understanding of Mars,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy. 



“NASA’s commitment to conducting Gold Standard Science will continue as we pursue our goal of putting American boots on Mars’ rocky soil.”



The core was taken from a rock named "<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-finds-best-evidence-yet-life-on-mars-cheyava-falls-rock/">Chevaya Falls</a>" in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river channel about a quarter mile wide that once fed Jezero Crater’s lake. 



After drilling, <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-captures-a-surprise-dust-devil-while-taking-high-resolution-selfie-on-mars/">Perseverance</a> sealed the sample for possible return to Earth, where laboratory instruments can perform tests far beyond the rover’s onboard capabilities.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-inside-the-martian-mudstone">Inside the Martian mudstone</h2>



Lead author Joel A. Hurowitz of <a href="https://www.stonybrook.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Stony Brook University</a> (SBU) reports a fine-grained mudstone with circular reaction fronts informally called leopard spots, plus small nodules embedded in layered sediments.



Perseverance’s <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/jpl/the-detective-aboard-nasas-perseverance-rover/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">SHERLOC</a> and <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/heres-how-ai-is-changing-nasas-mars-rover-science/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PIXL</a> instruments mapped organic carbon with phosphate, iron, and sulfur arranged in distinct, repeating patterns.



Two minerals stand out: vivianite and greigite. Vivianite is an iron phosphate, while greigite is an iron sulfide associated with iron and sulfur cycling in oxygen-poor settings.



These features show up in rocks that settled from<a href="https://www.earth.com/news/wave-ripples-discovered-mars-surface-indicate-liquid-water-present-4-billion-years-ago/"> water</a>, not in lavas. The site on Mars lies along Bright Angel, a set of outcrops that preserve layers and veins consistent with slow changes after the mud was laid down.



Textures and chemistry point to low temperature reactions that reorganized elements already present in the mud. 



That detail matters because low temperatures fit environments that life can handle, while very hot conditions tend to erase delicate signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-earth-microbes-leave-similar-traces">Earth microbes leave similar traces</h2>



On Earth, vivianite often forms where microbes reduce iron in water-rich sediments and trap phosphorus in blue-green nodules. 



Laboratory and field work document biologically mediated vivianite through extracellular electron transfer.



<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/earth-and-planetary-sciences/greigite" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greigite</a> frequently appears where sulfate reducing bacteria drive chemistry in anoxic muds. In controlled experiments, greigite was detected only in live biotic setups after months of incubation.



The Martian rock shows rims rich in vivianite surrounding small cores enriched in greigite. That bullseye pattern matches a sequence of electron transfer reactions seen in some Earth sediments.



None of this proves metabolism happened in Bright Angel mud, but it shows the chemistry is right for it. That is a subtle point, and it is the reason scientists keep the language cautious.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-evidence-of-life-on-mars">Evidence of life on Mars</h2>



A potential biosignature is a feature that might have a biological origin but still needs more data to rule out nonbiological sources. 



NASA points mission teams and the public to the Confidence of Life Detection, or CoLD scale, which encourages staged claims and independent checks.



The CoLD mindset is simple in practice. First detect a signal, then exclude contamination, then tackle alternatives, and only then talk about life on Mars with high confidence.



The Bright Angel work sits early on that ladder. It clears several necessary steps but leaves demanding tests for the lab.



Organic compounds can also arrive by <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/what-meteorites-tell-us-about-their-birthplace-in-space/">meteorites</a> or form without biology. The authors note those routes and describe how future analyses could tell paths apart.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-organic-signals-but-no-certainty">Organic signals, but no certainty</h2>



The Mars rover detected organic carbon in several targets within Bright Angel. Reaction fronts rimmed with vivianite surround cores richer in greigite, a pairing consistent with iron and sulfur cycling recorded in the paper.



Mineral veins include calcium sulfate, while the mudstone remains fine-grained and low in magnesium and manganese. There is no sign of intense heating that would reset the rock or scramble tiny textures.



The outcrop sits within layered sediments deposited by water flowing through Neretva Vallis. That channel spans roughly a quarter mile across, which implies sustained flow into Jezero’s ancient lake.



Low temperature context favors life-compatible chemistry, but it does not require life. Abiotic organics and <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/mineral-discovery-sheds-light-on-mars-fiery-past/">mineral</a> reactions can sometimes copy the same shapes and signals.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-proof-but-potential-life-on-mars">Not proof, but potential life on Mars</h2>



“It’s not life itself,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, stressing that this is a potential biosignature, not proof of life. The lead author echoed that caution.&nbsp;



“We cannot claim this is more than a potential biosignature,” said Hurowitz. Other officials also underscored the stakes and the limits.&nbsp;



“[But] this very well could be the clearest sign of life that we’ve ever found on Mars,” said Sean Duffy, acting NASA administrator. 



Caution is not hedging for its own sake. It is how science avoids false alarms when the question is this important.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-habitability">Implications for habitability</h2>



If the vivianite and greigite formed through microbe-like metabolisms, then <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/perseverance-rover-begins-steep-climb-up-martian-crater-rim-jezero-crater/">Bright Angel</a> captures a period when surface waters supported the same chemical strategies some cells use for energy today. 



That would extend Mars's habitability into a window when this part of Jezero was still wet.



If abiotic paths made the same pattern, the rock still records redox organization of iron, sulfur, and phosphorus in Martian mud. That is a window into how the planet cycles key elements without biology.



Either outcome matters for the bigger story. Mars did not just dry out, it changed its chemistry over time, and these samples let researchers track that change layer by layer.



The work also flags what to measure next. Isotopes, microtextures, and the exact structure of <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/carbon-atoms-in-your-body-took-a-400000-light-year-journey-through-space/">carbon</a> in the core can separate metabolic signatures from chemical lookalikes.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-search-for-life-on-mars-moves-forward">Search for life on Mars moves forward</h2>



The authors lay out lab experiments and field analogs on Earth to test whether nonbiological reactions can reproduce these textures and mineral pairings. 



They also point to analyses that require the sample in a clean Earth lab, including isotope ratios that biology tends to skew.



Sample return planning will shape how fast those tests happen. Meanwhile, the rover can keep mapping where these features cluster and how they relate to other rock units nearby.



PIXL and SHERLOC have shown enough sensitivity to guide that search. The pairing of elemental maps and Raman detections gives a consistent picture that can be applied to other outcrops.



As new targets are logged, the CoLD framework will help communicate progress without getting ahead of the data. That is how a potential biosignature becomes a result people can trust.

NASA announces discovery of life on Mars with high degree of confidence

One of the most difficult aspects of studying <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/fish-converge-evolution/">fish</a> is actually needing to navigate bodies of water and search their depths for your species of interest – but scientists may have just found a solution. For the first time, scientists have recorded data for a fish migration simply by testing DNA samples in the water. 

“Environmental DNA” (eDNA) was found in one-liter samples taken weekly from New York’s East and Hudson Rivers over a six month period. The DNA found in these samples was able to reveal the presence or absence of several key fish species passing through the river on each test day.

Fish leave traces of their DNA in the water as they swim, either through excretions or as parts of their gelatinous outer coating slough off their bodies. Surprisingly, the DNA remains intact enough to appear in water samples. 

The study was led by Senior Research Associate Mark Stoeckle, who explains that the DNA “…persists despite currents and tides with a goldilocks quality just right for research. If the DNA disappeared too quickly, we couldn't obtain an informative sample; if it persisted for too long, there would be too much DNA in the water to yield useful, timely insights."

By taking weekly samples from these rivers, the researchers were able to create a distinct picture of the migration that correlated with previous migratory studies that had used fishnet trawls. This new study from <a href="http://www.rockefeller.edu/">The Rockefeller University</a> could establish a new way to monitor fish migrations without the effort, cost, and harm that come with previous methods such as trawling.

“We didn’t find anything shocking about the fish migration – the seasonal movements and the species we found are known already,” says Stoeckle. “That’s actually good news, adding to evidence that eDNA is a good proxy. It amazes me that we can get the same information from a small cup of water and a large net full of fish.”

However, the eDNA method has not be perfected just yet. There are some species scientists are unable to distinguish. For example, some members of the herring family have identical sequences in the region of DNA used for testing. Furthermore, the reference library for DNA sequences isn’t complete, meaning some of the DNA obtained could not be identified.

The next steps for this method also involve fine tuning its calibrations. This can be done by attaining more eDNA samples and comparing the results to traditional surveys so that population data can be better balanced. 

Despite some of its current shortcomings, this exciting new technique comes with a low cost and has wide applicability. Sampling bodies of water using eDNA allows scientists to get a read on fish stocks without disturbing the fish, while also preventing some of the damage done by fish trawling. It isn’t an exact science, but it seems to have a bright future.

DNA samples shed light on fish migration patterns

If <a href="https://www.earth.com/video/carbon-dioxide-atmosphere/">carbon dioxide</a> is the main culprit in climate change, then our two options are to cut emissions or remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Following the goals set at the 2015 Paris Agreement, the next 10 years will be prove incredibly crucial in finding out if all countries involved will be able to deliver on their promises. 

Most of the nations of the planet agreed to take steps to reduce greenhouse gases so that the global temperature rise would be less than 2 degrees Celsius more than during the pre-industrial age, and hopefully more like a 1.5 degrees Celsius rise by 2100. That was the easy part. Now the trouble is figuring out how to get there, as researchers from the <a href="http://www.iiasa.ac.at/">International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis</a> (IIASA) learned when taking deeper dive for an article that will appear in the journal Nature Communications.

“The study shows that the combined energy and land-use system should deliver zero net anthropogenic emissions well before 2040 in order to assure the attainability of a 1.5°C target by 2100,” said coauthor and IIASA Ecosystems Services and Management Program Director Michael Obersteiner.

To get there, the IIASA report showed that fossil fuel usage rates would have to drop dramatically, to less than 25 percent of global energy supply by the end of the century. Currently, fossil fuels provide 95 percent of that total. Deforestation would have to be radically curtailed too, since trees and vegetation traps CO2 from release into the atmosphere.

If the current rate of conversion to renewable sources – about 2.6 percent annually – continues, CO2 emissions wouldn’t peak until the end of the century and global temperatures would be at a 3.5C increase, far off the target, by 2100.

The study concluded that it will take a mix of changes in human behavior, a stronger commitment to adapting renewable energy sources faster, and adapting better land-use strategies to reach the climate change goals.

The earliest known dinosaur relative, just now discovered and revealed in a recent article published in <a href="http://www.nature.com/nature/index.html">Nature</a>, goes against most scientists’ pre-conceived notions of what an early dinosaur relative would look like. 

This six-foot-long carnivorous lizard-like species is much larger than what scientists had come to expect of dinosaur relatives from the distant past. In fact, the lizard (formally known as Teleocrater rhadinus) was first identified by a British paleontologist named Alan Charig back in the 1950s, using <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/ancient-reptile-skeleton/">fossils</a> that were collected in the 1930s. Unfortunately for Charig, he didn’t recognize the connection between this fossil and dinosaurs, so this missing link remained missing.

Charig can be forgiven for his error, as the understanding of dinosaur evolution back in the 1950s was limited and Teleocrater didn’t look much like a dinosaur. Based off fossil study, it is believed that Teleocrater would have likely resembled the monitor lizards that are around today.

As Ken Angielczyk, <a href="https://www.fieldmuseum.org/">The Field Museum’s</a> associate curator of fossil mammals and one of the paper’s authors explains, “Surprisingly, early dinosaur relatives were pretty profoundly not dinosaur-like.” Angielczyk and his colleagues think the species could have grown between six and ten feet long, which includes its long neck and tail. 

The researchers believe that Teleocrater is the earliest member of the bird-like side of the archosaurs – a group that contains dinosaurs, birds, pterosaurs, and crocodilians. This would make it not a direct ancestor of dinosaurs, but rather the oldest known dinosaur cousin. 

Although some of its features clearly place it on the bird-like archosaur side with dinosaurs, it also appears to have had a lot in common with its more distant crocodilian cousins. Based on its rotating ankle joints, the researchers think that it probably walked with a more splayed, crocodile-like gait.

These revelations give scientists new insight on how dinosaur-like features may have evolved. "We used to think that many of the distinctive features of bird-line archosaurs evolved very quickly after they diverged from the crocodile line because early bird-line archosaurs like Marasuchus, Dromoeron, and Lagerpetonwere small and very dinosaur-like,” says Angielczyk. But with this new information, it appears that bird-line archosaurs may have first inherited some of their crocodile-like features from the common ancestor of all archosaurs. They believe now that the “typical” bird-line features evolved more slowly in a step-wise fashion over time.

Angielczyk explains, “Scientists generally don’t love the term ‘missing link,’ but that’s kind of what Teleocrater is: a missing link between dinosaurs and the common ancestor they share with crocodiles.”

The paper’s lead author, Sterling Nesbitt of <a href="https://www.vt.edu/">Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University</a>, is still reveling in these new findings: “The discovery of such an important new species is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery,” says Nesbitt. “Teleocrater fundamentally changes our ideas about the earliest history of dinosaur relatives.”

Discovery of new “missing link” in dinosaur ancestry

These days, there is no shortage of dating apps that allow people to… get around. While it may certainly sound like fun, these apps have also <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/34008736/dating-apps-increasing-rates-of-sexually-transmitted-infections-say-doctors">been shown</a> to increase the rate of sexually transmitted diseases amongst young people. And now, more bad news. New research suggests that promiscuity within a species can slow down its evolution.

The study was performed by a collaborative team of researchers from the <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/">University of Bath’s</a> Milner Centre for Evolution, <a href="https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/">Cardiff University</a>, and the <a href="http://www.orn.mpg.de/en">Max Planck Institute for Ornithology</a>, and published in the journal Evolution.

The team studied the genetic structure of shorebird populations to see how they evolved over time. The data showed that polygamous bird species are much less genetically diverse than monogamous <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/birds-dehydration-climate-change/">bird</a> species. The findings contradict prior theories that polygamous birds experience rapid diversification and higher genetic differences.

As it turns out, promiscuity mixes up the gene pool of a species. This actually dilutes the genetic differences between populations and thus, slows down the rate of evolution. 

"Our findings suggest that because of the pressure to find more than one mate, polygamous shorebirds may search large areas and therefore spread their genes as they go,” said Josie D'Urban Jackson, lead author of the study. "This means they effectively mix up the gene pool by diluting any genetic differences between geographically distant locations, so that populations are less likely to diversify into new species over time".

"In contrast, monogamous species only have to find one partner to pair with each season and tend to come back to the same breeding sites over time. This means they can gradually adapt to their local environment which increases the chance that they will split off and form a new species."

"We're very excited about these findings as this theory completely overturns conventional wisdom,” added Professor Tamás Székely of the <a href="http://www.bath.ac.uk/">University of Bath's</a> Milner Centre for Evolution."You might think that birds choose mates arbitrarily if they are promiscuous, but most individuals prefer a certain type, just as some humans might prefer blonde or dark hair in a partner.”

Sexual promiscuity can slow down the process of evolution

A stressful childhood is a common occurrence that seems to lead to a more difficult future. A new study reveals this is not the case. Adversity in early life can actually help develop a skill set that is not learned by more privileged children.

Researchers from <a href="https://www.utah.edu/">the University of Utah </a>studied cases of people who had endured childhood trauma. The team discovered many of these individuals adapted to their situations by becoming exceptionally aware of the stressful circumstances they endured. As a result, they have improved <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-trained-improve-memory/">memory</a> function. The team derived this adaptation could be a way of avoiding the same type of emotional hardship in the future.

Bruce Ellis, a psychology professor at the <a href="https://www.utah.edu/">University of Utah</a> explained, “We have been documenting deficits in children from high-stress backgrounds forever. We fill libraries with all the things that are wrong with them. But this paper was the first systematic attempt to understand what was right with them.”

The study, which will be published in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, found that children have a much better memory of negative interactions than positive ones. The research suggests that these individuals evolve to protect themselves from experiencing these types of negative encounters later in life. 

The research also concludes that individuals who witness verbal abuse early in life become much more capable of recognizing emotions. This prepares them to better cope with stressful situations. The research team refers to this as a type of “cognitive survival mechanism” that could be helpful in creating a school curriculum that will help build on the strengths of children that may otherwise be considered weak.

“We're not arguing that stress is good, or that it's good for kids to grow up in poverty or under harsh conditions,” said Dr Ellis. “What we're arguing is that [the detrimental effects of stress] are real, and that's half the story.”

The level of atmospheric <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/co2-turned-methanol/">carbon dioxide</a> is at an all-time high. This is responsible for major changes in the climate and also in our landscape. Recently, a team of researchers at the <a href="http://www.unh.edu/">University of New Hampshire</a> launched a study to determine the effects this rising concentration of carbon dioxide has on our ecosystems. The scientists turned their attention to mushrooms, an unlikely source that proved to contain a wealth of information.

The researchers first narrowed their study to focus on American lawns due to the fact that grass is such a critical component of the global carbon cycle. During photosynthesis, grass pulls carbon dioxide from the air using light energy to produce chemical energy. Aging grass, however, is not easily obtainable. The researchers set out to illustrate the changes in growth and competition of grass by viewing an alternative specimen.

Erik Hobble is a professor of terrestrial ecology at <a href="http://www.unh.edu/">the University of New Hampshire</a> and the first named author of the study. Hobble explains,"We thought that mushrooms could be a valuable indicator of responses of lawns to carbon dioxide levels in ecosystems because they feed on the dead grass and debris, or carbon, that law other plants put into the ground.” Hobble adds that mushrooms are “widely available  through previous collected specimens in labs and museums.”

For the study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences and also featured as an article in the magazine Eos, Hobble and his team scrutinized samples of the mushroom Amanita thiersii. These samples were collected between 1982 and 2009 from the southeastern and southcentral regions of the United States.The team combined their findings with data about the temperature, precipitation levels, and carbon dioxide concentration during the same time frame to look into the presence of  two main types of grass, C3 grasses and C4 grasses. C3 grasses, such as wheat and oats, thrive in cooler weather while C4 grasses, such as corn and sugarcane, develop better in warmer temperatures.

The mushrooms, or Amanita thiersii, displayed the various changes in growth and competition between the C3 and C4 grasses as the carbon dioxide levels increased. C3 grasses were impacted the most by climate change. The presence of C3 grasses in the carbon decreased by 12% with every single degree increase in temperature. The relative proportion of C3 grasses, however, increased by 18.5% as a result of the increase in carbon dioxide concentrations.. The study proves that the presence of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere undoubtedly affects plant competition, and that plants such as mushrooms can be utilized to project more information about the future of our landscape.

Would you believe me if I told you that a team of mechanical engineers from <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">UC Berkeley</a> just came out with a study to show why your shoelaces may keep coming untied? Well, like it or not you’re going to have to believe me – because it’s true and it’s on the cutting edge of shoelace science.

The study shows that the reason behind this annoying inconvenience is the combined factors of stomping and whipping forces that act like an invisible hand (not Adam Smith’s invisible hand- sorry, economics majors) and loosens the knot while pulling on the free ends of the shoelaces. 

So that’s it, right? Mystery solved and now we can all go about our day with a better understanding of our shoelace physics. Well… this study goes beyond just the laces on our shoes. The researchers believe that this study on knot mechanics could also lead to a better understanding of how knotted structures as a whole fail under a number of forces.

“When you talk about knotted structures, if you can start to understand the shoelace, then you can apply it to other things, like DNA or microstructures, that fail under dynamic forces," says Christopher Daily-Diamond, co-author and a graduate student at <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">Berkeley</a>. “This is the first step toward understanding why certain knots are better than others, which no one has really done.”

Previous studies have shown how knotted structures fail under sustained loads, but not much research has been done on how the dynamic pressures of changing forces and loads affects a knotted structure.

“We are trying to understand knots from a mechanics perspective, such as why you can take two strands and connect them in a certain way that can be very strong, but another way of connecting them is very weak,” explains Oliver O'Reilly, a <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">Berkeley</a> professor of mechanical engineering.

And while you may ask the opinion of your closest sailor friend on which knots are the toughest and strongest, you’ll need to read about this study to find out the mechanics behind their strength.

This study tested the two most common bowtie knots used to lace up shoes. One version is based on a square knot, with two lace crossings of opposite handedness on top of each other. The other version is based on a false knot, where the two lace crossings have the same handedness, which causes the knot to twist instead of lying flat when it is tightened.

The researchers found that both knots failed in the same way, and surmised that weak knots will always fail – which shouldn’t be surprising – but a strong knot will also fail over a certain time scale. However, they are still unsure as to why there is a fundamental mechanical difference between the two most common shoelace bowtie knots. 

Although this may all seem very trivial, the mechanics and physics behind this research have applications elsewhere. And if nothing else, reading this study may help you learn to tie your shoes.

The real reason your shoelaces are always coming undone

Would you believe me if I told you that a...

A study published in the open access journal <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/">PLOS Biology</a> has combined genetic analysis with an ambitious 19-year-long selection experiment in order to follow the evolution of a single color-vision gene in fish. The findings show that the mechanisms of adaptive evolution may actually be more predictable than previously thought.

For over 12,000 years, species of three-spined stickleback fish have flourished in the hundreds of freshwater lakes off the coast of British Columbia. Interestingly, these fish have branched out and formed independently evolving populations within their <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/road-salt-runoff-killing-twin-city-lakes/">lakes</a>.

All of these lakes can be broadly classified as either “clearwater” or “blackwater.” In clearwater lakes, full spectrum light is able to pass through the water relatively unimpeded, making visibility much easier for eyes such as our own. In blackwater lakes, most of the visible light is absorbed, creating an almost nocturnal environment where only dim, red-shifted light is able to get through.

The opsin protein SWS2 is sensitive to blue light, and can be found in the cone cells responsible for color vision in stickleback retina. Previous studies have show that amino acids changes in this protein allow it to be “tuned” to make it more sensitive to either the blue or red end of the light spectrum.

In this study, researchers compared the genetic sequences of SWS2 from marine, clearwater, and blackwater sticklebacks. Included in this group was a population of blackwater fish that the scientists had transplanted into an empty clearwater lake 19 years before, leaving them there to evolve.

Through genetic analysis, they found that the pattern of genetic changes in SWS2 in blackwater sticklebacks showed there had been a very strong selection for red-shift tuning. This means blackwater sticklebacks quickly evolved to see better in dark water. Not surprisingly, this adaption was not seen in clearwater sticklebacks.

The research team also found that the blackwater fish they had transplanted to a clearwater lake 19 years prior actually expressed a similar natural selection – except this time with the SWS2 becoming more sensitive to the abundant blue light in the clearwater lake. After only 13 generations, a significant portion of the population contained alternative versions of the gene that shifted to blue light sensitivity. These results show how remarkably fast this selective pressure can work.

Finally, the researchers also compared their stickleback results to other studies on the opsin genes of two related species of fish. The Bluefin killifish and black bream are distantly related to sticklebacks – separating on the evolutionary tree millions of years ago. These fish had also adapted to both blackwater and clearwater habitats.

Despite their distant relation, the researchers found two of the same genetic changes seen in stickleback SWS2 also show up in the SWS2 genes of these fish species. Because these same genetic changes occurred separately in their ancestor and in the sticklebacks, this is a perfect example of convergent evolution occurring over vastly different time scales (19 years versus millions of years).

David Marques of the <a href="http://www.uvic.ca/">University of Victoria</a> believes that the data “show that evolutionary ‘tinkering’ with a limited set of tools can lead to convergent ‘solutions’ to common problems both within species and between widely separated groups.” In other words, evolution may occur more predictably than we ever imagined.

Fish converge in evolution to assimilate to dark water

How would you use a warning of a few seconds – or possibly as much as a minute – before an earthquake struck? It’s not much time, but maybe you could get out of a building or at least stay out of that elevator whose doors have just opened. If you live on the U.S. <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/unusual-blob-ocean-water/">west coast</a>, you might start giving it some thought because you soon might get that early earthquake warning safeguard.

According to the <a href="https://www.ap.org/en-us/">Associated Press</a>, Oregon and Washington State are about to join California in the launch of ShakeAlert, an earthquake warning system under development by the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Society</a> (USGS) and university partners.

Officials with <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">USGS</a>, the <a href="https://www.washington.edu/">University of Washington</a> and others held a news conference Monday in Seattle to announce the system's rollout across the west coast. California has been testing the production prototype since early last year.

The <a href="http://www.seattletimes.com/">Seattle Times</a> reported that RH2 Engineering, a Washington state firm, signed on as a pilot user. The firm develops municipal water and sewage tank plants and hopes the alert system can help prevent spills in the event of a quake.

“The advantage of earthquake early warning is that it gives us forewarning that the shaking will occur, and we can be sure the valve is fully closed by the time the shaking starts,” RH2’s Dan Ervin told the newspaper.

The company is developing software and hardware to process the warning signals and automatically close valves.

The warning system works through a network of ground motion sensors. The amount of warning time depends on distance from an earthquake's epicenter. It might provide little or no warning to locations close to the epicenter, but spots farther away could get seconds or minutes depending on distance.

The <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/">USGS</a> says it will cost $38.3 million in capital investment to complete the ShakeAlert system to the point where it can begin issuing alerts and about $16.1 million per year to operate and maintain.

Could this new earthquake warning system save lives?

How would you use a warning of a few seconds...

Imagine an earthquake this powerful: “The ground would be moving up and down and sideways like a ship in a strong storm.” You’d certainly get tossed around, but there’d be no building damage whatsoever. That’s because there would have been no buildings. In describing this particular quake, Norm Sleep, a professor of geophysics at <a href="https://www.stanford.edu/">Stanford University</a>, is setting the scene 65 million years ago. The place is present-day Trinidad Lakes State Park in Colorado and he’s describing a visible fault line that his team feels was created by the impact of a horribly lethal asteroid in present-day Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

In the theory laid out by Sleep and his colleagues, the impact was powerful enough to generated massive seismic waves that triggered a Magnitude 6 earthquake as far away as Colorado, in the center of a tectonic plate where no previous fault had existed. That quake, in turn, contributed to the end of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dinosaur-species-similarities-humans/">dinosaur</a> reign on Earth.

Sleep and his colleagues found evidence for the fault in two areas in Colorado's Trinidad Lakes State Park, where a layer of iridium generated by the asteroid impact clearly marks the boundary between Cretaceous and Tertiary-age rocks, at the time of the dinosaurs' extinction about 65 million years ago.

At the two roadcuts, said Sleep, “there is a fault that slipped about a meter at the time of the impact. It offset the material below the impact layer but not above, but it's not something that would be obvious to the casual observer.”

The team feels that it would have taken such a massive jolt as the asteroid strike to trigger an earthquake in the middle of a tectonic plate with no previous faults.

<a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/06/what-happened-day-dinosaurs-died-chicxulub-drilling-asteroid-science/">National Geographic paints an apocalyptic picture</a> of the event itself. The magazine says that the killer asteroid might have been the size of a mountain and slammed home with the force of 100 million tons of TNT. Depending on distance from impact, death would have come by vaporization, thermal radiation, tsunami winds, floods, earthquakes or starvation through years of lost sunlight from grit and soil thrown into the atmosphere.

Neuroscientists have recently made new breakthroughs in understanding how the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/brain-store-memories/">brain</a> works while we're dreaming. Researchers from the Center of Sleep and Consciousness at the <a href="http://www.wisc.edu/">University of Wisconsin-Madison</a> and the <a href="http://centerforsleepandconsciousness.med.wisc.edu/">Wisconsin Institute of Sleep and Consciousness</a> (WISC) published insights gained from recent sleep experiments in the latest issue of Nature Neuroscience.  

“This study has managed to identify the brain regions that are involved in dreaming,’’ says one of the study’s lead authors, Dr. Francesca Siclari, of the <a href="https://www.unil.ch/central/en/home.html">University of Lausanne</a> and the WISC lab. “We’ve also been able to identify the brain areas that correspond to specific dream contents (like faces, spatial setting, movement and speech) during well-established sleep.”

One finding contradicts prevailing thought that the dream state was only activated during REM sleep, our deepest sleep cycle. The searchers found that dreams and a lack of dreaming can both occur in REM sleep and in non-REM sleep, or NREM.  

They also found that the type of dreams experienced by test subjects were related to activity in the area of the brain that would control that process in the waking hours. For instance, if the awakened participant reported a dream that involved hearing someone speak, it corresponded to electrical impulses in the part of the brain that controlled communications skills.

The experiments involved a total of 46 volunteers sleeping at the institute while wearing nets with 256 electrodes covering their scalps and parts of their faces. The electrodes created a high-density electroencephalography (HD-EEG) report when electrical activity was detected in their brains. When that happened, the volunteers were awakened by a tone and asked to report whether they’d been dreaming or not.

The first experiment showed that in both REM and NREM sleep, sleepers reported dreams when the ‘posterior hot zone’ in the back of the brain was activated, regardless of what the rest of the cortex was doing. Siclari said that dreaming can occur in the different sleep stages because the occurrence depends on this brain region being active, not on the stage of sleep.

In subsequent tests, subjects were awakened and asked to describe the content of their dreams. It was in this test that researchers found a correlation between the dream and the waking-life area of the brain, ie the dream about hearing someone corresponding to electrical activity in the language skills region of the brain.

“This suggests that dreams recruit the same brain regions as experiences in wakefulness for specific contents,” Siclari said. “This also indicates that dreams are experiences that truly occur during wakefulness, and that they are not ‘inventions’ or ‘confabulations’ that we make up while we wake up.”

We usually think of our adult-selves as more perceptive and focused than we once were as <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/dog-kids-health/">kids</a>, and while this is mostly true, new research shows that children may be better at noticing things most adults miss.

Researchers at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">The Ohio State University</a> performed two studies comparing the focus and attention of adults versus that of children. Not surprisingly, they found that adults were better at remembering information they were told to focus on, while ignoring any outside information. However, because of the grownups’ enhanced selective attention, they tended to miss information that children picked up on.

Vladimir Sloutsky, co-author of the study and professor of psychology at <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State</a>, conducted both studies with Daniel Plebanek, a graduate student in psychology. 

The first study included 35 adults and 34 children who were 4 to 5 years old. The participants were shown two shapes on a computer screen, with one shape overlaying the other. One shape was red while the other was green. Individuals were told to pay attention to a shape of a particular color.

The shapes then disappeared and another screen with shapes appeared. Both the children and adults had to decide whether the shapes in the new screen were the same as in the previous screen.

Results showed that adults performed better than children at deciding whether the target shape had changed. Children only got this correct 86 percent of the time compared to the grownups’ 94 percent. But Sloutsky made an interesting observation:

“…The children were much better than adults at noticing when the non-target shape changed.” In fact, children noticed that change 77 percent of the time, compared to 63 percent of the time for adults.

Sloutsky says that what they discovered was “children were paying attention to the shapes that they weren’t required to. Adults, on the other hand, tended to focus only on what they were told was needed.”

The researchers performed a second study – this time asking participants to notice certain shapes on drawings of artificial creatures. Once again, they found that children were significantly more accurate than adults at remembering features they weren’t asked to pay attention to. The results showed that 72 percent of children correctly made these identifications while only 59 percent of adults could do the same.

“The point is that children don’t focus their attention as well as adults, even if you ask them to,” Sloutsky explains. “They end up noticing and remembering more.” Adults were only able to do well at noticing and remembering the ignored information in the studies if they were told to pay attention to everything.

This difference in the abilities of children and adults to focus their attention has both positives and negatives. “The ability to focus attention is what allows adults to sit in two-hour meetings and maintain long conversations, while ignoring distractions,” Sloutsky said – although some may look at that as a negative. On the other hand, in their ability to distribute their attention, children are able to “learn more in new and unfamiliar settings by taking in a lot of information.”

These results could have important implications for understanding how children can learn better in a classroom environment. If you ask any teacher, you’ll find that getting kids to sit still and pay attention is the hardest part of the job. Gaining insight into how their distributed attention can become more focused could be key in developing an education system around the intricacies of a child’s mind.

City dwellers face an unseen danger with every breath. New findings from Emory University researchers suggest that fine particulate matter from <a href="http://earth.com/news/traffic-related-air-pollution-might-increase-alzheimers-risk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">vehicle emissions may significantly elevate the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease</a>. The study examined brain tissue samples from 224 individuals who had confirmed diagnoses and volunteered their brains for scientific research.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-disturbing-connections-emerge">Disturbing connections emerge</h2>



Scientists analyzed neuritic plaques — protein clusters that characterize Alzheimer's — while mapping each participant's exposure to PM2.5 particles based on residential location and surrounding traffic density. The correlation proved more alarming than anticipated. Individuals experiencing higher pollution exposure showed nearly double the likelihood of elevated plaque accumulation in brain tissue.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-timing-matters">Timing matters</h2>



The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns">Genetic vulnerability patterns</h2>



Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications">Public health implications</h2>



These findings, published in <a href="https://www.neurology.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Neurology</a>, underscore the critical importance of air quality regulations in urban planning. The research suggests that implementing stricter emission controls and promoting alternative transportation could serve as powerful tools in Alzheimer's prevention.



As cities worldwide grapple with growing traffic congestion and aging populations, this study highlights an urgent need for comprehensive approaches to environmental health that protect both our lungs and our minds.

Scientists have made a startling discovery that challenges everything we thought we knew about <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/saturn-moon-mimas-has-remarkably-young-ocean/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saturn's moon Mimas</a>. Beneath the heavily cratered surface that earned it the nickname "Death Star" lies a global ocean that formed just 5 to 15 million years ago—a remarkably young age by cosmic standards.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cassini-data-reveals-orbital-secrets">Cassini data reveals orbital secrets</h2>



The discovery, led by Dr. Valéry Lainey of the <a href="https://observatoiredeparis.psl.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Observatoire de Paris</a>, emerged from careful analysis of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NASA</a>'s Cassini spacecraft data. By studying subtle irregularities in Mimas's orbit around Saturn, researchers detected the gravitational signature of liquid water hidden 20 to 30 kilometers beneath the moon's icy shell.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-an-unlikely-ocean-world">An unlikely ocean world</h2>



At only 400 kilometers in diameter, Mimas seemed like the least likely candidate to harbor a subsurface ocean. Unlike other ocean moons such as Europa and Enceladus, which show clear surface signs of internal activity, Mimas displays no obvious hints of the liquid water beneath its ancient, crater-scarred exterior.



"Mimas is a small moon, and its heavily cratered surface gave no hint of the hidden ocean beneath," explained Dr. Nick Cooper from <a href="https://www.qmul.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Queen Mary University of London</a>, a study co-author.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-implications-for-astrobiology">Implications for astrobiology</h2>



The ocean's recent formation makes Mimas a prime target for studying how oceans develop and potentially support life. This discovery adds another member to the exclusive club of ocean worlds in our solar system, each offering unique insights into the conditions necessary for habitability.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-when-earth-became-a-frozen-wasteland">When Earth became a frozen wasteland</h2>



Imagine Earth as a giant snowball, frozen solid from the North Pole to the equator. This wasn't the plot of a science fiction movie – it was our planet's reality 700 million years ago during an extreme ice age that has puzzled scientists for decades.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-discovery">The discovery</h2>



Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.

MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.

The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.

"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.



The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.

Recent 2025 studies have validated these findings. Research examining tissue samples from 76 people found similar aging patterns, noting an "inflection point" between ages 45 and 55.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What was acid rain?</h2>



Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
