<p>For a long time, the Stone Age has been painted in narrow strokes. Men hunted with stone tools, women cooked. and children watched. This idea shaped research, museum displays, even the way skeletons were identified. But the ground in Latvia is telling a very different story.</p>



<p>At Zvejnieki, one of Europe’s largest <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tool-flint-discovery-challenges-theory-of-human-cultural-evolution/">Stone Age</a> cemeteries, archaeologists have found that tools buried with the dead were not just men’s possessions. Women had them too, so did children. </p>



<p>The way these objects were placed in graves shows they carried meaning far beyond daily work.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-graves-and-stone-tools">Ancient graves and stone tools</h2>



<p>Zvejnieki sits near Lake Burtnieks. The site has more than 330 graves, spanning over 5,000 years. Excavations began in the 1960s and continued for decades. </p>



<p>Thousands of ornaments made from animal teeth and amber came out of the ground. Red ochre stained the soil around many skeletons. These details have been studied again and again.</p>



<p>But stone tools? They were mostly ignored. Archaeologists thought of them as practical. Not decorative or symbolic. Just leftovers of everyday survival. That view collapsed once Dr. Aimée Little and her team returned with new tools of their own.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-looking-closer-at-stone">Looking closer at stone</h2>



<p>The Stone Dead Project used microscopes to search for tiny traces on the artifacts. The team studied how each tool was made, used, and finally placed in graves. </p>



<p>The results surprised everyone. Some scrapers showed wear from working animal hides. Others looked fresh, almost untouched, as if they had been created only for burial. And many were broken on purpose before being laid to rest.</p>



<p>These details reveal that <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/early-humans-traveled-long-distances-to-find-colorful-stones-for-tools/">stone</a> tools were not only about survival. They were part of rituals. Part of how people said goodbye. Part of how they thought about life and death.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tools-in-all-graves">Tools in all graves</h2>



<p>The discoveries challenged long-standing ideas about gender. Women were just as likely, sometimes even more likely, to be buried with stone artifacts. Children and older adults received them too. </p>



<p>That makes the picture clear: these objects were not reserved for hunters. They belonged to everyone.</p>



<p>“Our findings overturn the old stereotype of ‘Man the Hunter’ which has been a dominant theme in Stone Age studies, and has even influenced, on occasion, how some infants have even been sexed, on the basis that they were given lithic tools,” noted Dr. Little.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-changing-traditions-over-time">Changing traditions over time</h2>



<p>Burial practices at Zvejnieki shifted. In earlier centuries, tools were rare in graves. Later, by the 4th millennium BC, deposits grew larger. Some people were buried with dozens of flint artefacts. Many had never been used. Their role was clearly symbolic.</p>



<p>This change matched wider cultural <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/stone-tools-flint-created-400000-years-show-technological-advancement-of-early-humans/">shifts</a> across the Baltic. Communities began to use more red ochre. They buried people collectively. Clay death masks appeared. The inclusion of flint tools fit into this wider move toward more elaborate rituals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-the-tools-reveal">What the tools reveal</h2>



<p>Micro-wear analysis showed patterns that mattered. Scrapers often carried traces of hide working, suggesting that preparing skins was a valued activity even in death. </p>



<p>Bone and butchery marks appeared on some pieces. Mineral traces, connected to ochre, turned up only in female burials. That detail hints at gender-specific ritual roles.</p>



<p>Bifacial points - long seen as hunting weapons - often showed no use at all. They were made, broken, and buried. Their meaning was symbolic, not practical. Destroying them may have been part of letting go, part of a shared tradition that stretched beyond one community.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-special-graves-with-stone-tools">Special graves with stone tools</h2>



<p>Some graves stood out. An older child was buried with more than 40 tools, many unused, alongside ornaments of amber and animal teeth.</p>



<p>Another grave, belonging to a young woman, contained primary deposits with her body and additional offerings at her feet. These were not random choices. They were deliberate acts, full of meaning for the people who stood around the grave.</p>



<p>These burials show that women and children were not peripheral. They stood at the center of ritual traditions. Their graves carried messages for the living.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breaking-old-assumptions">Breaking old assumptions</h2>



<p>The implications are clear. Tools in Stone Age burials were not simply for men. They were symbols for everyone - men, women, children, and elders. They carried social meaning and were part of rituals that bound communities together in the face of loss.</p>



<p>“This research demonstrates that we cannot make these gendered assumptions and that lithic grave goods played an important role in the mourning rituals of children and women, as well as men,” noted Dr. Anđa Petrović, from the <a href="https://www.bg.ac.rs/home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Belgrade</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-it-matters-today">Why it matters today</h2>



<p>What might look like simple flint flakes turn out to be keys to identity, memory, and ritual. They tell us that Stone Age communities valued more than hunting. They cared about symbolism. They cared about honoring all their members.</p>



<p>“The study highlights how much more there is to learn about the lives - and deaths - of Europe’s earliest communities, and why even the seemingly simplest objects can unlock insights about our shared human past and how people responded to death,” said Dr. Little.</p>



<p>The study shows that re-examining overlooked artifacts can transform our understanding of the past. At Zvejnieki, stone tools are no longer just tools. They are stories carved in flint, carrying the voices of communities that lived, grieved, and remembered.</p>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">This winter, several sightings of the mysterious and rare lynx have been reported across Colorado. Last week, one such lynx was spotted parading through the Purgatory resort in southwestern Colorado. Photos and tweets quickly began to flood social media with accounts of the exciting appearance.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Just two weeks prior, two rare lynx were spotted along a mountain highway in Molas Pass, located 15 miles north of the Purgatory resort. The pair appeared to be a mother and daughter. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"My heart just about busted out of my chest when I realized what I was seeing," Dontje Hildebrand told the </span><a href="https://www.apnews.com/9c1439096d4a4e739b254153f577c4df/Ski-run-surprise:-Lynx-stroll-past-crowds-in-rare-sightings"><span style="font-weight: 400;">AP</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Lynx are medium-sized wild cats that have short tails, tufted ears, and broad paws that allow them to walk across the snow with ease. They typically grow to be 3 feet long and weigh about 30 pounds.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Lynx are native to Colorado, but were nearly wiped out in the 1970s due to overhunting. But in 1999, the state began reintroducing the wild cats by relocating a limited population from Alaska and Canada. It has been estimated that roughly 50 to 250 lynx live in the wild in Colorado today, generally in the southwestern portion.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">According to </span><a href="http://cpw.state.co.us"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Colorado Parks and Wildlife,</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> exact population figures are difficult to calculate because lynx can be so hard to find. But the increasing frequency of lynx sightings is an encouraging sign that the animals are settling into the area with increasing comfort following their reintroduction.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Still, lynx have remained an endangered species in the continental United States since 2000, according to the </span><a href="https://www.fws.gov/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The state of Colorado uses mounted automated cameras to track which areas lynx settle into.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Lynx are not seen as a threat to humans, said a spokesman from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. But because of their unpredictable nature, humans are discouraged from feeding or approaching them. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">A second red panda has died at the </span><a href="http://www.elmwoodparkzoo.org/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Elmwood Park Zoo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Norristown, Pennsylvania, located just outside of Philadelphia. The red panda, a 2-year old male named Shredder, died Wednesday of heart disease brought on by an enlarged heart and thickened heart walls.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Shredder was the second of triplets to die. His older sibling, Clinger, died in December 2015 of encephalitis related to a brain parasite. Zoo officials are examining the surviving sibling to confirm that he is in good health.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The red panda species has been listed as endangered since 2008, with less than 10,000 red pandas alive in the wild across the globe. Populations continue to decrease primarily due to habitat loss and poaching.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The red panda triplets came to the Elmwood Park Zoo from the </span><a href="https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Washington, D.C.. According to the institute, red pandas and giant pandas are not that closely related, though they do share a name. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Red pandas are native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. The mammals are also known as red bear-cats due to their ambiguous features, which include reddish-brown fur, long, thick tail, and a cat-like physique. They can also be mistaken for raccoons due to the white badges around their face.</span>

Red pandas can be difficult to study because they are generally nocturnal and also very shy. As a result, exactly population figures can be tricky to determine.

<span style="font-weight: 400;">New research has been published in the journal </span><a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/"><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Science</span></i></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> outlining the discovery of a 52-million-year-old fossilized fruit in South America. This plant family’s history is largely unknown because so few samples have been found in the fossil record. The family of plants, nightshades, includes foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers – however, given this fruit’s age, it’s probably best left uneaten.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">This ancient fruit was found in a fossilized rainforest in Patagonia, where, as N. Ruben Cuneo of the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Museum of Paleontology Egidio Feruglio reports, these discoveries “are </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">probably destined to revolutionize some traditional views on the origin and evolution of the plant kingdom.” Many researchers believe this area will yield many more discoveries of fossil plants.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Peter Wilf, a professor of geosciences at </span><a href="http://www.psu.edu/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Pennsylvania State University</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, led the team that discovered the fossilized plant. He told BBC News, “Here we have this discovery of these incredibly rare, delicate fossils – here you have a berry surrounded by this papery calyx – it’s almost unheard of that such a thing could be fossilized.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The fossilized fruit is of the genus </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Physalis</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, belonging to the family </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Solanaceae</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, or nightshade, which includes flowering plants such as tobacco and petunias. The berry is also closely related to tomatillos and ground cherries.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">It was previously believed tomatillos and ground cherries evolved more recently – around the time the Andes appeared. Scientists say this discovery shows the origin of the genus goes back tens of millions of years, much further than previously thought.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In the much warmer world of 50 million years ago, South America was closer to Antarctica and Australia than it is today.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Wilf further emphasized the importance of this discovery, explaining, “It’s the only fossil fruit ever found in this whole group of plants, that now has over 2,000 species. A lot of the evolutionary history of life, especially plants, which are rare as fossils, is largely unknown.”</span>

<strong>Raising a wild animal is generally a task best left to its mother. <a href="http://www.milwaukeezoo.org/">Milwaukee County Zoo</a> employees have taken on the job, however, to save the life of a young Amur tiger cub.</strong>

Kashtan was just a couple weeks old and a mere 10 pounds when he contracted an illness. The infection had already killed one of his three sisters, so the zookeepers removed him for veterinary care.

After a course of antibiotics, he was able to return to the zoo’s Big Cat Country exhibit, but not to his mother.

First, the zoo staff needed to feed him five times a day. During the course of his illness, he didn’t gain as much weight as he needed to during those vital first weeks.

Second, they worried that after so much time, his mother would reject him.

“Female tigers also have the potential to injure offspring if reintroductions are attempted,” the zoo said in a <a href="http://www.milwaukeezoo.org/news/2016/tigercubsdebut.php">press release</a> about the tiger cubs’ debut. “The primary concern of the Zoo’s animal care staff is to avoid any risk of injury to the cub.”

So the exhibit’s staff took over Kashtan's care. They weaned the Amur tiger cub from his bottle and he beginning to enjoy a meaty diet. He also gets plenty of play time with his sisters, Eloise and Bernadette, away from their mother.

It’s a unique situation. Usually when a tiger orphans or rejects a cub, zoos look for other orphaned cubs and raise them together. But in Kashtan’s case, his parents and sisters are still alive. That means he can stay at his home zoo and learn to socialize with his sisters.

The zookeepers will also work with Kashtan to teach him tiger interaction and socialization skills when his sisters are with their mother.

That will stop in another month or two, when he’s large enough that he could hurt them during play sessions.

The unusual efforts to save the Amur tiger cub were in part because Amur tigers are endangered. While tiger numbers rose for the first time in a century last year, only about 3,900 Amur tigers survive in the wild, the <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/amur-tiger">World Wildlife Fund</a> reports.

<strong>Could the Northern Hemisphere be headed toward a new ice age?</strong>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The plot of the 2004 film, “The Day After Tomorrow,” may have seemed far-fetched, at least at the time. In the movie, global warming causes ocean currents around the world to suddenly stop, creating a massive storm that destroys major cities and prompts a new ice age across the Northern Hemisphere. But according to a new report from a team of scientists at the </span><a href="https://ucsd.edu"><span style="font-weight: 400;">University of California, San Diego</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, this terrifying series of events actually happen, and sooner than one might expect.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the team of researchers from UCSD’s </span><a href="https://scripps.ucsd.edu"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Scripps Institution of Oceanography</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, current climate models drastically underestimate the potential for ocean currents to collapse by overestimating the stability of a currently known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a massive current pattern in the Atlantic that brings warm saltwater northbound, and carries cold freshwater southbound. The system is responsible for transporting considerable amounts of heat from the tropics to the North Atlantic, where it is released into the atmosphere. The AMOC relies on a balance of freshwater and saltwater. But with increased levels of carbon dioxide on track to continue to melt Arctic ice, a massive influx of freshwater would be sent into the ocean and disrupt this balance.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">When the team of researchers ran the existing climate change models with a reduced bias toward the AMOC, the result showed that circulation currents could in fact diminish and cause drastic cooling across the Northern H</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">emisphere. Current estimates predict that carbon dioxide levels will double to 700 ppm by 2100. According to the data, ocean circulation patterns could collapse 300 years after the CO2 levels double. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">If the collapse occurred, North Atlantic surface temperatures would drop 2.4 degrees Celsius, and surface air temperatures could drop by as much as 7 degrees Celsius.</span>

According to Wei Liu, who led the study, “The significance of our study is to point out a systematic bias in current climate models that hinders a correct climate projection. A bias-corrected model puts the AMOC in a realistic stability regime and predicts a future AMOC collapse with prominent cooling over the northern North Atlantic and neighboring areas. Our study has enormous implications for regional and global climate change.”

<strong>Israel averages more than 300 days of sun each year, but it lags behind much rainier countries when it comes to solar power. Now it plans to catch up by building the world’s tallest solar tower.</strong>

Israel has relied on fossil fuels for power generation since 1923, a quarter of a century before the country was founded. It also imports large quantities of natural gas. The established industry and a lack of incentives has slowed the adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar.

The country’s government hopes the solar tower, based near Ashalim, will change that.

The <a href="http://megalimsolar.wixsite.com/megalim-solar-power/the-project">Ashalim Solar Thermal Power Station</a> is a major step toward Israel’s goals for renewable energy. The country hopes to receive 10 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. Renewables make up 2.5 percent of Israel’s power generation right now.

The solar tower will go up in the Negev Desert outside Ashalim. Four plots have been set aside, and three are set for completion in 2018. Once finished, the Ashalim solar tower should generate 310 megawatts of power – 1.6 of the country’s power needs.

At the power station, more than 50,000 computer-controlled heliostats – mirrors that direct the sunlight toward a specific target – will track the sun and concentrate sunlight onto a boiler at the top of the tower. That will create enough high temperature steam to power a turbine generator, which will in turn produce energy, according to <a href="http://megalimsolar.wixsite.com/megalim-solar-power">Megalim Solar Power Ltd.</a>, which is building part of the project with <a href="http://www.brightsourceenergy.com/ashalim-solar-project#.WG6M78MrLnA">BrightSource Energy</a> and <a href="http://www.ge.com/">General Electric</a>.

One of the three plots in Negev is earmarked for the tower. The others will hold a traditional photovoltaic solar farm, and an energy storage facility.

The Ashalim solar tower isn’t the first such project in the world. California has the largest solar tower installation, and there are about a dozen more worldwide. However, Israel’s will be the tallest, in part because they’ve maximized the small space in Negev by packing in as many heliostats as possible. When heliostats are closer together, the boiler toward has to be taller to compensate.

If the project is successful, it could start a trend. Israeli companies have produced some of the top solar energy technology in the world, but are generally forced to take their expertise outside of the country’s borders due to a lack of demand and usable land in Israel. Now, it could be their day in the sun in their homeland.

<strong>Illegally traded endangered species get a second life</strong>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">As if endangered species don’t already have enough problems as it is, their limited population quantity also sadly increases their value on the black market. But according to a new study from a team of researchers at the </span><a href="http://www.hku.hk"><span style="font-weight: 400;">University of Hong Kong</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and the </span><a href="http://www.anu.edu.au"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian National University</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, there could be a silver lining for those animals who have been illegally traded but manage to escape captivity.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In a paper published in the journal </span><a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/fee.1449/abstract"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, the team explains how illegally traded endangered species that escape can form secondary populations in new locations. These secondary populations can ease the pressure on their native population and increase the odds of long-term survival.  </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the seizure of an illegal shipment of 23 yellow crested cockatoos," co-author Dr. Luke Gibson told </span><a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38498037"><span style="font-weight: 400;">BBC News</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. "Each individual had been stuffed inside a plastic water bottle."</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Gibson had been unaware that the species was endangered having seen several flying around outside of his office. This prompted an exploration into how an already threatened species could become self-sustaining in a new environment. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The team found at least 49 cases of endangered species establishing a secondary population just as the yellow crested cockatoo did in Hong Kong.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade," said Gibson. "Poachers go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the bird and then ship them off, usually up to Hong Kong or China where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has fueled the decline of this species [in its native range]. But it's really interesting because that same cause also had another effect: some of the people who were keeping this species in Hong Kong accidentally or intentionally released them."</span>

<strong>What if we could see just how much a new smartphone or sushi lunch will affect wildlife? Now we can, thanks to new maps of consumer hotspots that put wildlife at risk.</strong>

Dr. Daniel Moran of the <a href="https://www.ntnu.edu/">Norwegian University of Science and Technology</a> paired up with his colleague, Dr. Keiichiro Kanemoto of <a href="http://www.shinshu-u.ac.jp/english/">Shinshu University</a>, to tackle the problem.

They created a new technique that examines global supply chains to identify where they cause threats to animals species, and analyze how. Then they mapped out each country’s consumer hotspots across the globe.

“Locating biodiversity threat hotspots driven by consumption of goods and services can help to connect conservationists, consumers, companies and governments in order to better target conservation actions,” Moran and Kanemoto wrote in an <a href="http://www.nature.com/articles/s41559-016-0023">article</a> published this week.

In other words, the major players can tackle threats like deforestation in a way that leaves everyone all satisfied. And the maps help identify threats to wildlife and what is causing them, allowing those players to take action.

Moran and Kanemoto focused on 6,803 vulnerable and endangered animal species listed by the <a href="http://www.iucnredlist.org/">International Union for Conservation of Nature</a> and <a href="http://www.birdlife.org/">BirdLife International</a>. Then they looked at the threats each species faced, such as deforestation. Finally, they followed the chain of events to the ultimate consumer.

That way, they could determine which consumer hotspots were causing a ripple effect down the global supply chain.

The tool lets you look at a country and see where its consumer habits have the largest effect.

For example, the U.S. is a consumer hotspot that causes threats to species in Mexico, Madagascar, the Sahel region of Africa, Southeast Asia, Spain, Central America, and elsewhere.

For marine species, Southeast Asia was the primary consumer hotspot. The region’s fishing industry feeds not just that area, but people in the U.S. and the European Union.

The two scientists hope that their work will help countries and consumers take more effective steps toward conserving endangered species.

“Maps of species threat hotspots can thus help all actors, from producers and conservationists to final consumers, to focus solutions on targeted biodiversity hotspots,” they wrote.

The pair published their research in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/natecolevol/"><em>Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution</em></a>.

<strong>Two years ago, hikers in a South Texas riverbed when they saw a mysterious pattern imprinted on a rock. A closer look and some brushed-away dirt uncovered what paleontologists now believe are the remains of a dolphin-like ichthyosaur.</strong>

The fossil could be about 92 million years old, based on the rock dating. The ancient creature may have swum in oceans that covered parts of Texas at that time, the scientists said.

It was found in the Eagle Ford limestone, part of a sedimentary rock layer that is found throughout much of Texas.

"Very rarely do we get really complete skeletons out of the Eagle Ford," doctoral candidate Josh Lively told <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/"><em>The Houston Chronicle</em></a>. Lively specializes in marine reptile fossils at the <a href="http://www.utexas.edu/">University of Texas in Austin</a>. "Whenever you have an associated skeleton like this, when you have multiple parts of the animal, it's a really important find."

James Harcourt, a petroleum geologist with the <a href="http://www.rrc.state.tx.us/">Texas Railroad Commission</a>, made the discovery while hiking with some colleagues. Their find stayed below the surface until last week, when the railroad commission’s 2016 annual report included a photo of the fossil.

That’s when it caught the attention and fueled the excitement of paleontologists.

The dolphin-like ichthyosaur – which means “fish lizard” – were sea-living reptiles that grew to about six feet long. They died out about 90 million years ago.

But Harcourt’s find may not end up being an ichthyosaur. Harcourt and paleontologist Tony Fiorillo, curator of the <a href="https://www.perotmuseum.org/">Perot Museum of Nature and Science</a> in Dallas, believe it is. But Lively said it could be a plesiosaur. That much larger marine reptile resembles the Loch Ness monster.

Paleontologists would need to retrieve the fossil and study it in a lab to determine its true identity. That could prove to be a challenge, since the fossil is on private property. The scientists would need the permission of the property owner before they could excavate the bones.

<strong>In a role reversal, it’s female pipefish who do all the work of competing for a mate. And male pipefish? They get pregnant.</strong>

That role reversal is rare in the animal kingdom, and it has scientists fascinated.

Male pipefish, like seahorses, sea dragons, and other fish in the Syngnathidae family, are among a very small number of species where the male, not the female, carries the young to term.

For all of these fish, the females still produce the eggs. But they transfer their clutch to a specialized brood pouch on the males. Then, the males carry the eggs to term, often sharing nutrients.

"From a research standpoint, pipefish are interesting because of the unique opportunity they provide to study sexual selection in reverse, which can tell us a lot about how variation works in mating and reproductive success," Dr. Sarah Flanagan said in a <a href="http://www.nimbios.org/press/FS_pipefish">press release</a>. Flanagan is a postdoctoral fellow at the <a href="http://www.nimbios.org/">National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis</a>.

The reversal of roles has led to a reversal of the typical sex characteristics seen in the wild. Female pipefish are the flashier members of the species, sometimes with more colorful ornamentation. They’re the ones who have to compete for males, who prefer larger females that produce more eggs.

But in a <a href="http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00265-016-2255-3">new study</a> led by Flanagan, a team of researchers from the U.S. and Sweden found that when it comes to courting, it’s not just about what males want.

Females have some input, too, and size matters. The team, which looked at broad-nosed pipefish, found that larger male pipefish carry more eggs and produce healthier offspring. Those offspring are better survivors, too, and that makes large males much more desirable for the females.

“Our results show that larger males mate earlier than smaller males and that pregnant males have higher measures of condition compared to non-pregnant males,” the researchers wrote.

Males that breed earlier can also carry more pregnancies over the course of the breeding season, the team noted.

"This study shows that there are many factors at play in this system, more than perhaps we ever realized, but it's that variation in traits and fitness which allows for sexual selection to work," Flanagan said.

She plans to extend the research, looking into how pipefish genetics play a role in their reproductive behavior.

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://link.springer.com/journal/265"><em>Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology</em></a>.

<strong>A new, three-dimensional map will let scientists track ocean ecosystems in stunning, unprecedented detail.</strong>

The international team of developers who created it hope it will be a powerful new tool for studying the ocean’s “biogeography” and deciding which areas are at the most risk. The map is intended for conservationists, biologists, government officials, and others who make decisions about ocean preservation.

The map sorts ocean regions worldwide into 37 categories. Regions with similar water temperature, oxygen levels, salinity (salt content), and nutrient levels are grouped together by category.

Maps already exist that attempt to describe ocean ecosystems, lead author Dr. Dawn Wright said.

“What’s often missing is all that’s between the surface of the ocean and the ocean bottom,” Wright told the journal Nature. “That’s what our project will hopefully bring to the table.”

Wright is the chief scientist for <a href="http://www.esri.com/">Esri</a>, the California-based geographic information-systems company helped build the map.

Unlike previous maps, the one created by Esri uses ecological marine units, or EMUs, to create a three-dimensional representation of the ocean.

EMUs describe the type of ecosystem from the surface down to the ocean’s floor. This means that the map can offer up information about why marine animals choose to live in a specific location. It can show the interaction between warm and cold waters, or oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor regions.

It can even show how the ocean changes with natural events like the El Niño warming cycle.

That information is vital for those who make the oceans their livelihood, from marine biologists to tuna fishing crews.

Projects like the <a href="http://www.sanbi.org/">South African National Biodiversity Institute</a> plan to use EMUs to update their data on their ocean habitats. That information will be used in the country’s next national biodiversity assessment.

EMUs is the second step that began with a project to map land-based ecosystems. The ocean map used data collected over five decades by dozens of agencies.

Wright presented the project at a December meeting of the <a href="https://sites.agu.org/">American Geophysical Union</a>.

<strong>In December 2014, a massive string of storms brought extreme rainfall to Northern California.</strong>

The pineapple express dumped three inches of water on the San Francisco Bay Area in just an hour on December 11, a day that also set records for rainfall in Sacramento. It triggered the first blizzard warning in six years in the Sierra Nevadas. It blew out power for 50,000 people.

The tempest was known as the “Storm of the Decade,” but it may soon be the new norm for California, according to researchers from the <a href="http://web.mit.edu/">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</a>. Why? Climate change could bring more atmospheric rivers, they said.
<h3>Extreme rainfall on the rise?</h3>
Atmospheric rivers are narrow flows of concentrated water in the lower atmosphere. They can carry anywhere from seven to 15 times the amount of water in the Mississippi River, and most of that reaches the ground as torrential downpours.

A pineapple express, like the one that caused the December 2014 storm, is a type of atmospheric river that forms near Hawaii. California sees a lot of them already.

But it may see a lot more in the future, if global temperatures continue to rise, the MIT team said. Warmer temperatures encourage atmospheric rivers to form, and warmer air can hold a lot more water, they said.

The scientists created a new model for predicting the frequency of extreme rainfall in specific locations. The technique looks for telltale patterns in atmospheric data, then connects those patterns to the location in question.

They created the new model because old ones were unable to accurately predict extreme weather events like the atmospheric rivers.

Current models use global data to predict local weather. That means local weather experts can predict that there may be rainfall, but are unable to accurately estimate how much water will fall.

“None of the [older] models are even close to the observations,” lead author Dr. Xiang Gao said in a <a href="http://news.mit.edu/2017/more-extreme-storms-ahead-california-0103">press release</a>. “And regardless of the combination of atmospheric variables we used, the new schemes were much closer to observations.”

California served as a test case for the new technique.

The scientists found that their rainfall predictions were much more accurate if, instead of trying to “zoom in” on a local spot using global data, they instead focused on large-scale atmospheric patterns.

“We’ve actually found there’s a connection between what climate models do really well, which is to simulate large-scale motions of the atmosphere, and local, heavy precipitation events,” study co-author Dr. Adam Schlosser said. “We can use this association to tell how frequently these events are occurring now, and how they will change locally, like in New England, or the West Coast.”

They also found that when they applied this technique to future weather, they saw a lot more atmospheric rivers on the horizon. If global temperatures rise by just 4 degrees Celsius by 2100, the model showed an average of three more extreme rainfall events each year in California.

Their findings were published in the <a href="http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-16-0544.1"><em>Journal of Climate</em></a>. The <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/">National Science Foundation</a>, the <a href="https://energy.gov/">U.S. Department of Energy</a>, and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/">NASA</a> supported the research.
<h3>Study backed up by recent oyster research</h3>
The findings follow a similar study published last month.

Researchers from the <a href="https://www.ucdavis.edu/">University of California, Davis</a> and <a href="http://www.sfbaynerr.org/">San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve</a> studying a mass die-off of oysters found that atmospheric rivers had likely caused the event.

The Olympia oysters near <a href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/chinacamp/">China Camp State Park</a>, at the northern edge of the bay, were among the densest populations in the world. An average 3,000 oysters per square meter lived at the site, the researchers said.

In the spring of 2011, nearly all of those oysters died. At least 100,000 oysters perished, and probably much more, the researchers said. The die-off was surprising, because the hardy native oysters are pretty resilient when it comes to changing water conditions.

“Species that undergo [mass mortality events] may require decades to recover, and in extreme cases, MMEs may trigger extinction,” the study authors, led by Dr. Brian Cheng, wrote.

This would be devastating in the case of oysters, which are a “foundation species,” they wrote. The study was published in the journal <a href="http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/283/1844/20161462"><em>Proceedings of the Royal Society B</em></a>.

The researchers discovered large flows of freshwater into the bay that spring had caused its salt levels to drop drastically. Olympia oysters cannot survive in freshwater, and the bay’s salinity dropped below their threshold, killing them.

While the researchers have focused on restoring the oysters’ population and spreading them out so they can better withstand disaster, they also wanted to figure out what had caused the freshwater flows.

Studying weather conditions through field data and remote sensing equipment led them to the likely culprit: atmospheric rivers flowed into California in the weeks ahead of the die-off, delivering extreme rainfall.

That heavy rain flowed into the rivers and out to the bay – a massive freshwater injection the oysters couldn’t survive.

"Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme events [such as atmospheric rivers], with theory predicting that extreme precipitation events should intensify because of increased evaporation and greater atmospheric water-holding capacity," the scientists wrote in their study.
<h3>Atmospheric rivers in California history</h3>
Atmospheric rivers are old news in California.

One pineapple express-fueled extreme rainfall event changed the state’s history. Beginning in December 1861 and stretching into the new year, more than 40 days of storms linked to atmospheric rivers turned the state’s massive Central Valley into an inland sea.

The Great Flood of 1862, which also dropped record rain in Oregon and Nevada, turned most of California’s massive Central Valley into a giant inland sea with some areas under 30 feet of water.

Floodwaters breached the levees around the capital of Sacramento. The levees then acted as a dam, leaving the city a western Venice even after floodwaters began to recede.

The Gold Rush town of Red Dog recorded more than 25 inches of rain in one month. About 11 of those inches fell on two days alone. The flooding also destroyed an Army fort near Klamath.

Dozens of towns were underwater and countless homes and businesses were destroyed. Thousands of people died and more than 800,000 cattle drowned. California declared bankruptcy, not even 12 years after achieving statehood.

Atmospheric rivers have caused other disasters in the state. In January 1952, a massive blizzard stranded a train in the Sierras. Storms in 1955 wreaked havoc on the Sacramento Valley. Another series of pineapple expresses flooded large swaths of the West Coast in 1997. And in 2005, an atmospheric river deluged the San Gabriel Mountains with 31 inches of rain in just four days.
<h3>What now?</h3>
Both the UC Davis and MIT studies found that atmospheric rivers are likely to increase in the coming decades. The MIT study figured out how to predict extreme rainfall events.

But what does that mean for California residents?

If global temperatures rise 4 degrees Celsius, it could mean more frequent intense storms, the MIT team said.

If worldwide climate change goals are met – and if they actually succeed in cutting global warming in half by 2100 as promised – California will still see extreme rainfall, but not nearly as much, they said.

And in either case, the ability to predict extreme rainfall events will leave Californians better prepared, the scientists said. That includes extra maintenance on important systems such as levees to prevent costly damage.

“That is actionable information,” Schlosser said.

The MIT team is now working on translating the technique from torrential downpours to heatwaves.

<p>The research team discovered that pollution exposure during the final year before death demonstrated the strongest association with brain changes. This timeline suggests relatively rapid impacts from environmental toxins on neural health. The connection remained robust even after accounting for various demographic and health factors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-genetic-vulnerability-patterns"><strong>Genetic vulnerability patterns</strong></h2>



<p>Perhaps most concerning, people lacking the APOE gene—which naturally predisposes individuals to Alzheimer's — exhibited more than twice the susceptibility to pollution-related brain damage. Study author Dr. Anke Huels noted this indicates environmental elements like air contamination could trigger the disease in cases where hereditary factors don't explain.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-public-health-implications"><strong>Public health implications</strong></h2>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>On the unforgiving landscape of North Greenland, temperatures drop and sunlight barely penetrates through the polar winter. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. <p>The Cairo site presents three unique root systems, suggesting Devonian period forests were diverse ecosystems with different trees occupying different environmental niches, much like today's forests.</p>

<p>In 2022, New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey secured a $170,000 grant for the town of Cairo to construct specialized fencing around the fossil forest site. The second wave hits around age 60, involving changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune regulation, kidney function, and again cardiovascular and muscle health.</p>

<p>During the mid-40s transformation, researchers observed significant changes in how the body processes alcohol and fats. This period often coincides with increased stress levels in many people's lives, potentially contributing to lifestyle factors that accelerate these molecular shifts.</p>



<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>

<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
