For half a century, black hole fireworks have lived mostly in theory. The standard picture holds that if black holes ever “explode,” it’s vanishingly rare - maybe once every 100,000 years somewhere in the universe - and far beyond our reach to witness.



A new analysis flips that expectation on its head. Physicists at the <a href="https://www.umass.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Massachusetts Amherst</a> argue there’s better than a nine-in-ten chance that an observable black hole outburst will occur in the next ten years. 



The team noted that our existing array of space- and ground-based telescopes is already capable of seeing it.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-black-holes-that-can-explode">Black holes that can explode</h2>



The scenario hinges on a particular class of black hole first proposed by Stephen Hawking in 1970: <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/primordial-black-holes-may-be-shifting-earths-orbit/">primordial black holes</a> (PBHs).



Unlike their heavyweight cousins born from the deaths of massive stars, PBHs could have formed in the first fractions of a second after the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/if-the-big-bang-theory-is-correct-what-exactly-happened/">Big Bang</a>. During that time, extreme density ripples compressed pockets of the early universe.



Crucially, a PBH can be far lighter than a stellar black hole. And the lighter a black hole is, the hotter it becomes, slowly bleeding energy as particles via Hawking radiation. 



As it shrinks, it heats up even more in a runaway process that ends in a final, brilliant outburst. This outburst is a flash of particles and high-energy light that, in principle, we can detect.



That last part has been the sticking point. If PBHs exist, why haven’t we seen one go off? The prevailing wisdom has been that the odds are simply too small on human timescales.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-small-twist-with-big-consequences">Small twist with big consequences</h2>



The UMass Amherst team revisited one of the field’s quiet assumptions: that primordial black holes carry no electric charge. 



In their work, they explore a “dark QED” toy model - an analog of electromagnetism that includes a very heavy, hypothetical cousin of the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/shape-of-electrons-revealed-first-time-through-big-advance-in-quantum-physics/">electron</a>, sometimes called a dark electron.



If PBHs formed with even a tiny amount of this dark electric charge, the researchers show, the charge could temporarily stabilize the black hole’s evaporation. That pause delays the finale, so more PBHs would be reaching their terminal phase now. 



With all current experimental constraints folded in, their calculations shift the expected cadence of observable PBH explosions from “about once every hundred millennia” to “roughly once per decade.”



“We’re not claiming it’s guaranteed, but the probability may be as high as 90% that one occurs within the next ten years," said Baker.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-catching-an-exploding-black-hole">Catching an exploding black hole</h2>



If a PBH is in its endgame, it should spew a burst of Hawking radiation: a short-lived cascade of particles and photons across a broad energy range. That signature is exactly the kind of high-energy transient today’s observatories are built to chase.



Space telescopes sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays, wide-field optical surveyors scanning the sky nightly, and radio arrays listening for fleeting bursts could all contribute to catching - and confirming - the event. 



Because only lightweight primordial black holes can explode today, detecting Hawking radiation would be tantamount to detecting a PBH.



The team’s message is simple: prepare the observing playbook now. Coordinated triggers, rapid follow-up, and cross-checks across wavelengths could turn a single flash into a definitive detection.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-detection-would-rewrite-the-textbooks">Detection would rewrite the textbooks</h2>



Seeing a PBH explode would do more than check a box next to Hawking’s most famous prediction. It would provide the first direct evidence that black holes radiate and evaporate, lifting a key idea out of the realm of theory and into observation.



It would also prove PBHs exist at all - and that the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/scientists-capture-baby-pictures-of-the-very-early-universe-cosmic-microwave-background/">infant universe</a> could seed gravitational monsters without stars. Perhaps most tantalizing, the debris of that final flash would act like a cosmic census. 



In principle, the particle spray encodes every constituent of nature that couples to gravity and can be thermally produced. These include familiar residents like electrons and quarks, the <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/higgs-boson-god-particle-still-remains-quantum-mystery-after-12-years/">Higgs boson</a>, any dark matter particles if they exist, and potentially species we’ve never seen.



A single well-observed event could offer a once-only inventory of the universe’s building blocks, informing everything from particle physics to cosmology.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bold-claims-big-stakes">Bold claims, big stakes</h2>



Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. The group’s “dark QED” setup is intentionally simple, and the true microphysics of any dark sector - if it exists - could differ.



Still, the work highlights how modest changes to long-held assumptions can dramatically alter expectations for what we might observe. 



It also underscores an opportunity: even if the odds are lower than the headline number, the payoff of a detection is so immense that it makes sense to plan for it.



We already know how to look. We already have the tools. If nature obliges, the next decade could deliver a brief, brilliant flash that confirms Hawking radiation, reveals <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/directly-detecting-dark-matter-primordial-black-holes-simple-as-monitoring-mars-orbit/">primordial black holes</a>, and hands physicists a ledger of the universe’s particles - all in one cosmic firework.

Horses and humans have a special bond. Scientific studies have shown that both the horse and the human become attuned to each other’s physical and mental ways, thus developing the state of co-being.

Taking this one step further, researchers at Kobe University Kobe University Graduate School of Intercultural Studies have proved that when horses face unsolvable problems they use visual and tactile signals to get human attention and ask for help. The study also suggests that horses alter their communicative behavior based on humans' knowledge of the situation. These findings were published in the online version of Animal Cognition on November 24.

Communicating with other individuals in order to get information about foraging sites and predators is a valuable survival skill. Chimpanzees, who are evolutionarily close to humans, are especially skilled at understanding others. Studies suggest that chimpanzees distinguish the attentional states of other individuals (seeing or not seeing), and they are also able to understand others' knowledge states (knowing or not knowing). Some domestic animals are also very good at communicating with humans - recent studies of dogs have revealed that they are excellent at understanding various human gestures and expressions. It is thought that these abilities were influenced by the domestication process.

Since they were domesticated 6000 years ago, horses have contributed to human society in various shapes and forms, from transport to companionship. Horse-riding has recently drawn attention for its positive effects on our physical and mental health. The high social cognitive skills of horses towards humans might partially explain why humans and horses have a collaborative relationship today. However, the scientific evidence for this ability is still scarce.

In this study, scientists investigated horses' social cognitive skills with humans in a problem-solving situation where food was hidden in a place accessible only to humans. The experiment was carried out in a paddock belonging to the equestrian club at Kobe University, where eight horses from the club participated with the cooperation of their student caretakers.

For the first experiment, an assistant experimenter hid food (carrots) in a bucket which the horse could not reach. The researchers observed whether and how the animal sent signals to the caretaker when the caretaker (unaware of the situation) arrived. The horse stayed near the caretaker and looked at, touched and pushed the caretaker. These behaviors occurred over a significantly longer period compared to cases when they carried out the experiment without hiding the food. The results showed that when horses cannot solve problems by themselves they send signals to humans both visually (looking) and physically (touching and pushing).

Building on these results, for the second experiment they tested whether the horses' behavior changed based on the caretakers' knowledge of the hidden food. If the caretaker hadn't watched the food being hidden, the horses gave more signals, demonstrating that horses can change their behavior in response to the knowledge levels of humans.

These two experiments revealed some behaviors used by horses to communicate demands to humans. They also suggest that horses possess high cognitive skills that enable them to flexibly alter their behavior towards humans according to humans' knowledge state. This high social cognitive ability may have been acquired during the domestication process. In order to identify the characteristic that enables horses to form close bonds with humans, in future research the team aims to compare communication between horses, as well as looking more closely at the social cognitive ability of horses in their communication with humans.

By deepening our understanding of the cognitive abilities held by species who have close relationships with humans, and making comparisons with the cognitive abilities of species such as primates who are evolutionarily close to humans, we can investigate the development of unique communication traits in domesticated animals. This is connected to the influence of domestication on the cognitive ability of animals, and can potentially provide valuable information for realizing stronger bonds between humans and animals.

There is an overwhelming consensus in the scientific community that human-caused climate change is changing the planet. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main heat-trapping gas largely responsible for most of the average warming over the past several decades. When humans burn coal, oil and gas (fossil fuels) to generate electricity or drive our cars, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, where it traps heat. But how does this directly impact humanity?

Human-caused climate change very likely increased the severity of heat waves that plagued India, Pakistan, Europe, East Africa, East Asia, and Australia in 2015 and helped make it the warmest year on record, according to new research published today in a special edition of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

The fifth edition of <a href="https://www.ametsoc.org/ams/index.cfm/publications/bulletin-of-the-american-meteorological-society-bams/explaining-extreme-events-from-a-climate-perspective/">Explaining Extreme Events from a Climate Perspective</a> offsite link presents 25 peer-reviewed research papers that examine episodes of extreme weather of 2015 over five continents and two oceans. It features the research of 116 scientists from 18 countries analyzing both historical observations and changing trends along with model results to determine whether and how climate change may have influenced the event.

The strongest evidence for a human influence was found for temperature-related events --- the increased intensity of numerous heat waves, diminished snowpack in the Cascades, record-low Arctic sea ice extent in March and the extraordinary extent and duration of Alaska wildfires.

“After five years of the BAMS Explaining Extreme Events report, we’re seeing mounting evidence that climate change is making heat waves more extreme in many regions around the world,” said lead editor Stephanie C. Herring, a scientist with NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. "As we get better at distinguishing the influence of climate change from natural variability, the local significance and impacts of this global phenomenon are becoming clearer."

Evidence of human-caused-climate-change in 2015 flooding, fires – and sunshine

Numerous other events of 2015 were made more extreme by climate change, the report found. The probability of “sunny day” tidal flooding events in the Miami area, like the one that inundated coastal areas that September, has risen 500 percent since 1994, according to one study. Human-induced climate change likely contributed to the record high intensity of west North Pacific typhoons and the record amount of winter sunshine in the United Kingdom.

But researchers found no evidence of an overall climate change signal in the delayed onset of the Nigerian spring rainy season or in the extreme daily rainfall totals that inundated Chennai, India in December. There was likewise no evidence that the extreme cold winter conditions over the northeast United States in 2015 were made more likely by human-induced climate change.

Lessons learned over the past five years

More than 100 papers examining extreme events have been accepted for publication in this special report since its inaugural issue in 2012. These studies take a place-based and event-specific approach to identifying the role of human-caused-climate-change, and answer the question of how much a particular recent event’s likelihood of recurrence or intensity has changed relative to the past.

While there’s mounting evidence in the role of human-caused-climate-change in amplifying the severity of heat waves, evidence of a climate change signal has not been found in a majority of extreme precipitation studies published in this special edition, Herring said.

However, she cautioned that the lack of clear evidence of a climate signal did not necessarily mean climate change played no role in an event. A “null” result could mean the event fell within the bounds of natural variability. It could also mean that the framing of the research question or the method of analysis chosen requires further refinement and development.

Identifying analytical methods that work better than others

Contributing authors choose the event they wish to study, so the new studies are neither a random sample nor a comprehensive survey of extreme weather events. They do illustrate how various methods can be applied to extreme event analysis, she said, and in cases where multiple groups look at the same event, the relative skill of different approaches can be compared.

“With this report, we continue to document scientists’ growing ability to identify how climate change influences today’s weather,” said Jeff Rosenfeld, editor-in-chief of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, which independently conducts the peer reviews for studies included in this special report. “These accessible and brief papers show the scientific community and the public that once seemingly impossible insights about climate impacts are now within the capability of timely, rigorous science.”

In the final weeks of his presidency, President Barack Obama is working to finalize as many environmental protections as possible before Donald Trump takes office.
Republicans have pledge to reverse or block most of these pending actions. President-elect Donald Trump campaigned on promises to reverse course on some of Obama's environmental initiatives, including a moratorium on new federal coal sales. However, Trump has recently showed signs of easing his stance as a climate change denier.
Here are some of Obama's recent environmental protections.
November 18: Arctic drilling leases shelved
What happened? The Interior Department finalized a five-year offshore drilling plan that blocks the sale of new oil and gas leases in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas north of Alaska.
How durable is it? A Donald Trump administration could re-write the blueprint for drilling, which Alaska's congressional delegation and industry groups have blasted as an impediment to the energy industry. For faster action, Congress would have to pass a law forcing the <a href="https://www.doi.gov/">Department of Interior</a> to hold lease sales.
November 15: Methane greenhouse emissions restrictions
What happened? The administration adopted a rule that would require oil and gas companies to control their releases of methane, a greenhouse gas considered many times more potent than carbon dioxide.
How lasting is it? State officials from Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota and industry groups including the Western Energy Alliance have challenged the restrictions in federal court. A Trump administration could re-open the rule-making process to undo the rule, or federal lawmakers could challenge it under the Congressional Review Act.
January 15: Moratorium on new coal lease sales on public lands.
What happened? The administration halted pending sales of 1.4 billion tons of coal from publicly-owned reserves, citing in part the potential that burning the fuel would make climate change worse. The move followed decades of complaints from Democrats in Congress and government investigations that found taxpayers were not getting a fair return from companies.
How lasting is it? Trump campaigned on a promise to rescind the moratorium. Experts say he could simply direct the Interior Department to halt its three-year review of the federal coal program.
November 21: Mining claims blocked near Yellowstone National Park
What happened? The Departments of Agriculture and Interior barred for two years new mining claims on 30,000 acres outside Yellowstone National Park, where two companies plan to explore for gold. Similar actions were taken previously on mining claims in portions of Oregon and Washington state.
How lasting is it? Mining industry representatives say Trump Interior secretary nominee Rep. Ryan Zinke could terminate the mining lease withdrawal process without any notice or public comment. Zinke, of Montana, has said the area deserves protection but also wants to hear more from the community.
September 1: Endangered species protections prioritized
What happened? U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service prioritized consideration of more than 300 potentially imperiled species for protection, including the Pacific walrus and North American wolverine.
How lasting is it? The incoming administration could direct wildlife officials to rewrite the plan. Congress could block funding for status reviews that are needed to put species on the protected list or write laws to remove species that currently are protected, such as gray wolves in Wyoming and the western Great Lakes.

Republicans vow to block Obama's recent environmental protections

In February, the <a href="http://www.berkeley.edu/">University of California, Berkeley</a> released MyShake. Since then, the quake app has detected nearly 400 tremors worldwide – many of them in Oklahoma.

The app, which is available on Android, uses the motion detectors built into smartphones to detect earthquakes. When it does detect the ground motion of an earthquake, it records the data and sends it to the <a href="http://seismo.berkeley.edu/">Berkeley Seismological Lab</a>.

It can detect a quake with a magnitude as low as 2.5, and it’s already been used to record rattling and rolling in the U.S., Mexico, Chile, New Zealand, Japan, and beyond.

The most tremors have been recorded in Oklahoma, shaking up researchers’ expectations. The state now sees more quakes per year than California – though fewer major ones – and the app picked up on that. 

More than 220,000 people have downloaded the app, becoming citizen scientists in a vast network of quake data collection. Between 8,000 and 10,000 smartphones are “active” at any given time, the seismological lab reports. That means the app is open, the phone is lying flat on a horizontal surface, and it’s connected to WiFi.

Berkeley scientists hope to eventually use the app to send early warning alerts to people farther from a tremor’s epicenter. 

An update to the quake app this week includes an option to receive push notifications in an area defined by the users.

"The notifications will not be fast initially – not fast enough for early warning – but it puts into place the technology to deliver the alerts and we can then work toward making them faster and faster as we improve our real-time detection system within MyShake," said Dr. Richard Allen, the project leader. 

Ten months of information from the app shows that smartphone accelerometers are sensitive enough to pick up quakes quickly, and the density of the devices can provide enough data – quickly – for early warning once enough people have joined the network, said Qingkai Kong, a developer and graduate student who worked on the project. 

The phones are sensitive enough to pick up the first earthquake waves, before the strong, destructive seismic waves arrive, he said.

"We already have the algorithm to detect the earthquakes running on our server, but we have to make sure it is accurate and stable before we can start issuing warnings, which we hope to do in the near future,” Kong said. 

The quake app could prove extremely useful in Oklahoma, he noted. The state has seen a huge increase in both the number and strength of earthquakes in recent years. Geologists have linked Oklahoma’s new, shakier status to the injection of wastewater from fracking and oil drilling deep underground, which can place pressure on faultlines.

MyShake could give scientists more data about the induced quakes to work with, Kong said.

The update also includes an option to automatically close the app unless a phone is plugged in, which can extend battery life in older phones.

Kong presented MyShake to the annual meeting of the <a href="https://sites.agu.org/">American Geophysical Union</a> in San Francisco on Wednesday.

A new set of footprints at Laetoli have snagged anthropologists’ attention. They offer fascinating new clues into the lifestyle of an ancient human ancestor.

The original Laetoli footprints were left by a trio of human ancestors – most likely Australopithecus afarensis, the same species as “Lucy” – more than 3.6 million years ago. The 88-foot-long trail was discovered in Laetoli, Tanzania in 1978, and became famous for showing that Lucy and her species walked upright like modern humans.

The newly discovered set of ancient human ancestor footprints, just 160 yards away, offers even more intriguing clues about A. afarensis. 

S1, the nickname anthropologists have given the ancient human ancestor who left the prints, was probably male, according to anthropologists. They can’t tell for sure based on footprints alone, they admitted. 

Based on his footprints, he probably stood at about 5 feet, 5 inches tall – extremely tall for A. afarensis – and weighed about 100 pounds, and he might have been popular with the ladies because of it, the researchers said.

If he was 5-foot-5, he would have towered a full 8 inches taller than his fellows who left the other footprints at the site. Lucy, the most famous A. afarensis, stood only about 3 ½ feet tall.

“Our results are consistent with considerable body size variation and, probably, degree of sexual dimorphism within a single species of bipedal hominins as early as 3.66 million years ago,” Dr. Fidelis Masao and his co-authors wrote in an <a href="https://elifesciences.org/content/5/e19568">analysis of their discovery</a>.

If S1 is male, and if males of A. afarensis were much larger than females as the new find seems to indicate, it could offer clues to their social structure, the researchers said. Gorillas, which show similar disparities between the biological sexes, often form “harem”-like social structures, where a dominant male, a group of females, and their offspring form a social unit, the anthropologists noted.

However, the estimates of S1’s height and weight – and those of the other hominins who left footprints in the volcanic ash at Laetoli – could change radically based on future discoveries, said Dr. William Jungers of <a href="http://www.vahatra.mg/">Association Vahatra</a>.

“The footprints preserved at Laetoli are what are known as ‘trace fossils,’ because they are traces of behavior rather than the petrified remains of actual body parts,” he wrote in a <a href="https://elifesciences.org/content/5/e22886">commentary</a> on the new findings. 

Anthropologists have never found a complete A. afarensis foot, he pointed out. So the footprints at Laetoli can offer clues to behavior, including that A. afarensis is bipedal, but only guesses at the physical characteristics such as height and age of the human ancestors who left them, he said.

Both the report of the new discovery and the commentary on Masao and his colleagues’ analysis of it were published in the journal <a href="https://elifesciences.org/">eLife</a>.

According to a new study by <a href="http://www.rice.edu/">Rice University</a>, American evangelicals are more likely to believe in climate change than evolution. The study found that 20 percent of those surveyed said that they were skeptical that climate change is occurring or that humans have any role in climate change. But 45 percent of those surveyed said that natural evolution is probably or definitely a false concept.

The study also found that religion is more closely tied to evolution skepticism than it is to climate change skepticism. Around 70 percent of those who identify as evangelicals said that evolution is most likely false, but only 28 percent of that population said that climate change is not occurring or that humans have no role in climate change. 

The study, titled "Examining Links Between Religion, Evolution Views and Climate-Change Skepticism,” was published in the latest edition of <a href="http://eab.sagepub.com/">Environment and Behavior</a>. It focused on the larger “anti-science” mentality as it relates to membership in conservative religious groups.

A team of researchers, led by Rice sociologist Elaine Howard Ecklund, studied the link between evolution skepticism and climate-change skepticism with regard to religious affiliation. The team surveyed 9,636 people in the U.S. population which, according to Ecklund, is up to 40 percent evangelical, depending on how “evangelical” is defined.

Said Ecklund, "This is different from the popular account that the people who oppose climate change research and the people who oppose the teaching of evolution are the same, and that evangelical Protestantism is clearly linked to both.”

A man may have found an ice age coyote, dog, or even a bobcat while dowsing in his son’s backyard in Riverside, California. 

Just before Thanksgiving, Gary Braithwaite had been showing his son how to use a dowsing rod, made from two metal hangers, to find the sprinklers in his yard. However, his son found several “anomalies” while trying the technique, Braithwaite told the <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/2016/12/06/california-man-finds-what-may-be-ice-age-bobcat-in-backyard-of-sons-home/">San Jose Mercury-News</a>. 

He believed that the anomalies pointed to underground metal – maybe even a meteorite, he said.

So he and his son began digging in the area the dowsing rod had pointed to. About four feet down in one hole, they found the skeletal remains of an animal. A slipped shovel knocked some teeth loose.

The pair thought the remains might belong to an ancient bobcat, so they took them to the <a href="http://www.ucr.edu/">University of California, Riverside</a> to ask a paleontologist. 

Jess Miller-Camp, a museum scientist at UC Riverside, said the skeletal remains could belong to a bobcat, though they were more likely to be an ice age coyote or dog. Based on the soil conditions they were found in, she believes they date back to the Pleistocene Epoch, which ended with the most recent ice age about 12,000 years ago.

She plans to go to the site with some students to excavate the rest of the skeleton, she said.

The fossils are not the first Pleistocene remnants found in California. Parts of the state, especially in the south, are practically graveyards for the creatures that lived during the last ice age.

In July 2015, construction workers at a housing development in San Diego County <a href="http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2015/09/06/Ice-Age-fossils-up-to-200000-years-old-found-at-California-construction-site/9591441555454/">found fossils</a> of mammoths, horses, turtles, and a bison. The Pleistocene fossils ranged from 50,000 to 200,000 years old. 

Just before Thanksgiving of this year, construction workers on the <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-ice-age-20161130-story.html">Los Angeles subway</a> discovered the remains of an ice age mastodon, an ancient relative of elephants. 

And, of course, the <a href="http://www.tarpits.org/">La Brea Tar Pits</a> are known for their vast collection of Pleistocene fossils, from mastodons to skunks, bobcats, and coyotes.

The fossils give paleontologists insights into the diversity of live during the Pleistocene, and how animals adapted during the period of warming that ended the last ice age.

It’s a story reminiscent of the first Jurassic Park movie. A piece of amber purchased at a market in Myanmar has been found to contain an actual dinosaur tail. The amber was in the city of Myitkyina by Lida Xing of the <a href="http://en.cug.edu.cn/">China University of Geosciences in Beijing</a>. 

The vendor assumed the tail was some type of plant, but Xing believed it could be something far more significant. The amber was then sent to the<a href="https://www.royalsaskmuseum.ca/"> Royal Saskatchewan Museum in Canada</a> for further analysis. Scientists used CT scans to determine that the fossilized object in question was actually the feathered tail of a theropod dinosaur. The team believes the dinosaur tail most likely belonged to a coelurosaur from about 99 million years ago. 

Their findings were published in <a href="http://www.cell.com/current-biology/home">Current Biology</a>. According to Dr. Ryan McKellar, "The new material preserves a tail consisting of eight vertebrae from a juvenile. These are surrounded by feathers that are preserved in 3D and with microscopic detail. We can be sure of the source because the vertebrae are not fused into a rod or pygostyle as in modern birds and their closest relatives. Instead, the tail is long and flexible, with keels of feathers running down each side."

The vertebrae alignment indicate that the tail belonged to a dinosaur, as opposed to an early relative of modern birds. The team also discovered traces of ferrous iron in the soft tissue layer surrounding the bones, a common mineral found in dinosaur blood.

"Amber pieces preserve tiny snapshots of ancient ecosystems, but they record microscopic details, three-dimensional arrangements, and labile tissues that are difficult to study in other settings," said Dr. McKellar. “This is a new source of information that is worth researching with intensity and protecting as a fossil resource."

Dinosaur tail found in chunk of amber

It’s a story reminiscent of the first Jurassic Park movie....

Today, the town of Blythe, California is in an inland desert. It’s a far cry from 5 million years ago, when the geological record of ancient ocean tides shows the Colorado River flowed into the Gulf of California in that place, according to a new study.

A team of <a href="http://uoregon.edu/">University of Oregon</a> geologists traveled to the town near the Arizona border to study the sedimentary rock along valley that houses the Colorado River. 

They found that Blythe was once beachfront property. The layers of sediment aren’t even. Instead, the layers vary rhythmically, pointing to tides ebbing and flowing and shifting the sediment deposits in the process, the researchers said.

A number of the desert rocks near Blythe, particularly the Bouse Formation. The rock formation is awash with tidal features, according to geologists. They’ve long suspected that the Bouse Formation would hold clues to prehistoric water flows in the region.

Now, the new research shows it was probably once underwater – specifically, under the northern end of the Gulf of California, which now begins south of the U.S-Mexico border.

Previously, scientists believed that it was under one of a series of freshwater lakes, said Brennan O’Connell, a graduate student at the University of Oregon and lead author of the study. The new evidence of the motion of ancient ocean tides in the layers of rock is one of just several clues indicating the gulf once stretched much farther north.

Another piece of evidence that’s in the geological record: uplift, the slow, vertical raising of the Earth’s surface, the researchers said. The former sea floor is approximately 1,082 feet higher these days than it was 5 million years ago, O’Connell said. 

The new geological study confirms a theory paleontologists have put forward for years. The fossil record experts have found remnants of saltwater creatures in the area for more than 50 years, but geologists who supported the freshwater lake hypothesis believed birds of prey must have carried them to the region, the researchers said. The new evidence that the saltwater gulf stretched from the ocean north to the Blythe area fits better with that fossil record.

Sedimentary deposits look very different when ocean tides play a role in their formation versus lake waters, the researchers said. They also used mathematical analyses to back up their findings.

The study was shared online and will be published by the journal <a href="http://geology.com/">Geology</a>.

A deadly avalanche that slid down a Tibetan mountain in July was most likely triggered by climate change, an international team of scientists has concluded. 

Nine Tibetans were killed when 70 million tons of ice crumbled loose from the Aru glacier on July 17, tumbling down to the valley below.

A neighboring glacier dropped its own avalanche in September, but that event doesn’t seem to have caused any deaths, according to reports.

Glacial collapse is a new phenomenon for western Tibet, where Aru is located, the researchers said. Even though glaciers in the southern and eastern parts of the autonomous region have begun melting, the glaciers in the west have held steady and even expanded in some cases. 

That changed with the Aru avalanche, and the team of researchers wanted to know why.

Scientists from the <a href="http://english.cas.cn/">Chinese Academy of Sciences</a>, <a href="https://www.osu.edu/">Ohio State University</a>, and <a href="http://bpcrc.osu.edu/">Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center</a> joined forces to investigate the avalanche and determine what forces of nature might lie behind it. 

The deadly avalanche in July was fast – about five minutes – and buried nearly 4 square miles of the valley floor in snow during that time. That points to meltwater at the glacier’s base, which would make the downhill path slick and let the tumbling snow slide faster, the scientists said.

The team did run a number of computer models and simulations to seek out any other explanations. However, only the presence of meltwater could explain the avalanche, they reported in an analysis of the July disaster. 

The average temperature recorded by the weather station closest to the Aru glacier has gone up 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1960s, the researchers pointed out. Although there may be other explanations for the meltwater, the most likely is that the warming temperatures have led to slow melting of the glaciers, they said.

Investigation into the September avalanche is ongoing, and a cause has not yet been determined.

The team’s analysis of the July avalanche was published in the <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-glaciology">Journal of Glaciology</a>.

During the Age of Dinosaurs, ancient mammals hid in the shadows and ate the terrible lizards’ leftovers, right? Well, not always. The fossil remains of marsupial relative Didelphodon vorax are crushing that misconception.

The little mammal was about the size of a modern badger, based on the size of four fossils found in 66 to 69 million-year-old Hell Creek Formation deposits, in North Dakota and Montana, according to <a href="http://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms13734">a new study</a>.

Each of the four fossils included at least a partial set of chompers: nearly a full skull, a partial snout, and two upper jaw bones. Like most metatherians – Cretaceous Period ancestors and relatives of modern marsupials – many of the main remains of D. vorax are dental.

In D. vorax’s case, though, those strong, strong teeth didn’t just survive more than 60 million years. They provided the Cretaceous critter with one heck of a powerful bite.

To determine just how powerful, researchers scanned the fossils and compared them to skulls and jaws from modern mammals with known bite forces. Even the researchers were surprised by the results: pound for pound, D. vorax has the most powerful bite of any mammal that has ever lived.

The power of the marsupial relative's bite and the shape of its teeth would have allowed it to bite through bone and shell with ease, the study found. That would have let it fit equally well into roles as a predator or a scavenger. D. vorax might even have been able to hunt prey roughly equal to its own size, including small dinosaurs.

The carnivorous mammal didn’t just compete for meat with its reptile rivals, however. By studying the microwear patterns on the teeth, the research team discovered that D. vorax was an omnivore that ate vertebrates, bugs, shellfish, and plants. 

Beyond just learning about D. vorax, the researchers also gained new clues to the evolution of modern marsupials. They found five lines of marsupial ancestors, and that marsupial relatives in North America began getting larger along with other mammals more than 80 million years ago.

The researchers believe the modern pouched mammals primarily evolved in South America after the mass extinction approximately 66 million years ago.

The study was published in the journal <a href="http://www.nature.com/">Nature</a>.

Mexico’s endangered vaquita porpoises are now on the edge of extinction, according to a pair of new papers. The researchers blame the marine mammals’ declining population on an increase in illegal fishing in the vaquitas’ range.

One study, published in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/cobi.12789/abstract">Conservation Biology</a>, used a sophisticated network of acoustic detectors to record the decline of Mexico’s vaquitas. The acoustic array shows a 34 percent decline each year in the population of endangered porpoises.

That decline means only about 60 of the rare vaquita porpoises remain in the world, according to a paper by the same team of researchers, published in the journal <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/conl.12331/full">Conservation Letters</a>.

The illegal fishing that is cutting down their numbers isn’t even targeting the marine mammals, according to the researchers. Instead, their deaths are collateral damage from totoaba fishing, called “bycatch.” 

Totoaba fishing took off in the 1940s and continues today, even though the large fish was declared endangered in 1986 and critically endangered ten years later.

The fish are prized for their bladders, which can net as much as $100,000 on the Chinese black market, according to the <a href="https://eia-international.org/time-short-to-save-vaquita-by-tackling-illegal-fish-trade">Environmental Investigations Agency</a>.

Although the Mexican government banned gill net fishing in waters inhabited by the vaquita for two years, the acoustic study found that gill net fishing is still happening. 

It wasn’t the first sign that people had been violating the ban, which was instituted in April 2015. Surveillance activities and collection of discarded gill nets in the vaquitas’ waters have also washed up evidence of illegal fishing of the totoaba fish and, by extension, the vaquitas, despite patrols by the Mexican Navy, law enforcement, and environmental groups. 

Unless more action is taken to stop illegal fishing in the vaquitas’ home waters, their extinction is imminent, said Armando Jaramillo-Legorreta of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources in Mexico, who led the research.

Australian researchers from the <a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Sydney</a> have finally cracked one of geology's greatest mysteries: what caused the Sturtian glaciation and why it persisted for an unprecedented 57 million years. This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.



Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."

The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.



However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.



Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.



Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.



The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.



The research opens new possibilities for treating the vast majority of cancers where MYC plays a destructive role.



The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.



Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.



The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators. Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas. These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.



Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.

Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Nushagak Bay, a large estuary in southwest Alaska. Nushagak runs mainly north to south and exits in Bristol Bay, a large body of water in the Bering Sea.



"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.



"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."

"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.



To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;



"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.



"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."



"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."

The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;



Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.

Today’s Video of the Day from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.



In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;



According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;



Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. 



Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.



Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians.
