<p>Think about sipping a sugar-free drink that still tastes sweet. Many of us have puzzled over this illusion. Now scientists at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reveal how our brains transform smell into taste.</p>



<p>The research, published in <em>Nature Communications</em>, shows that the brain encodes certain <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/your-dna-may-explain-why-you-love-or-hate-certain-smells/">aromas</a> as if they were flavors themselves.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-flavor-and-smell-form">How flavor and smell form</h2>



<p>Flavor is more than taste. It comes from a combination of gustatory signals and retronasal odors, those aromas drifting from the mouth to the nose. </p>



<p>The insula, known as the taste cortex, was found to integrate these signals earlier than expected. This means the brain does not wait for higher regions to combine <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/how-your-brain-decides-what-smells-good-or-bad/">taste</a> and smell but merges them immediately into one experience.</p>



<p>Study lead author Putu Agus Khorisantono is a researcher in the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at <a href="https://ki.se/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karolinska Institutet</a>. </p>



<p>“We saw that the taste cortex reacts to taste-associated aromas as if they were real tastes,” explained Khorisantono. "The finding provides a possible explanation for why we sometimes experience taste from smell alone, for example in flavored waters." </p>



<p>"This underscores how strongly odors and tastes work together to make food pleasurable, potentially inducing craving and encouraging overeating of certain foods.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-the-brain-links-flavor-and-smell">How the brain links flavor and smell</h2>



<p>The researchers tested 25 adults. First, participants learned to identify sweet and savory flavors through combinations of taste and smell. </p>



<p>Later, inside a scanner, they received either tasteless odors or odorless tastes. Algorithms trained on brain responses to actual tastes were then tested on <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/radio-waves-can-boost-our-sense-of-smell-without-contact/">odors</a> alone. The surprising outcome was that odours mimicked the brain’s taste responses.</p>



<p>The study revealed that sweet or savory odors activated the same neural patterns as the corresponding tastes.</p>



<p>This overlap was strongest in the ventral anterior insula, a region connected to olfactory areas. Importantly, the researchers ruled out simple pleasure ratings as the cause. Instead, the brain genuinely encoded odors in a way that matched taste perception.</p>



<p>“This shows that the brain does not process taste and smell separately, but rather creates a joint representation of the flavor experience in the taste cortex,” said senior researcher Janina Seubert. </p>



<p>“This mechanism may be relevant for how our <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/our-sense-of-smell-and-different-odors-can-influence-how-we-see-colors/">taste</a> preferences and eating habits are formed and influenced.”</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-flavor-and-smell-matter">Why flavor and smell matter</h2>



<p>The findings highlight the insula as a hub for flavor integration. They also reveal that taste representations can drift over time. Neural patterns of taste identity were less stable across days, echoing results seen in rodent studies. </p>



<p>This suggests that our flavor experiences are dynamic, adapting with exposure, context, and internal states such as hunger, mood, or attention. </p>



<p>A flavor that feels vivid and distinct one day may blur or even shift the next, depending on what the brain has recently learned or anticipated.</p>



<p>This fluid quality points to a system designed not for rigid coding but for flexibility, helping us adjust to changing diets, environments, and cultural influences on taste.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-flavor-identity-and-reward-value">Flavor identity and reward value</h2>



<p>The study also observed cross-modal decoding in other regions, such as the orbitofrontal cortex, which is known to encode the value of food. </p>



<p>The researchers propose that the insula forms a shared flavor identity, while the orbitofrontal cortex evaluates its reward value. This dual process could explain why certain odors make foods irresistible and shape long-term eating habits.</p>



<p>The team now wants to test external smells, or orthonasal odors. These are the scents we encounter before eating, like walking past bread or pastries.</p>



<p>“We want to find out whether the activation pattern in the brain’s taste cortex changes from salty to sweet when we walk from the cheese aisle to the pastries in the supermarket,” said Khorisantono. “If so, this could have a significant impact on the foods we choose to consume.”</p>

<p>This research reframes flavor as a deeply integrated brain process. Smell and taste are not separate streams but overlapping codes that can trick the brain into tasting without tasting.</p>



<p>Beyond solving everyday mysteries like sweet-tasting flavored water, the work raises questions about cravings, overeating, and how our diets are shaped by environments filled with powerful aromas. </p>



<p>The research also suggests that everyday exposure to food-related smells in supermarkets, restaurants, offices, and even advertising spaces may influence us more than we realize.</p>



<p>These aromas may prime the brain to expect certain tastes, creating a loop where scent alone can nudge us toward food choices we might not otherwise make. </p>



<p>Over time, this subtle influence could shape eating habits, nutritional patterns, and even health outcomes, revealing how deeply our sensory world directs behavior long before conscious decisions take place.</p>

<b>African Elephant poaching costs the continent greatly, according to a new study.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Poachers kill between 20,000 and 30,000 elephants in Africa every year. But their gain </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">– payment for illegally collected ivory from crime syndicates seeking to meet Asian demand – is Africa’s national loss, a new study shows.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s a big loss, too: experts say the continent is losing around $25 million (USD) per year in lost tourism revenues. The study, published in the journal </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nature Communications</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, found that the financial cost of cracking down on poaching  in several African regions is lower than the loss of visitors and their money.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The study’s lead author, Dr. Robin Naidoo of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), pointed out there are moral reasons to protest the poaching of elephants. However, not everyone feels they have an ethical responsibility toward Africa’s elephants, he said. This study shows it’s not just a moral concern for the African countries where elephants live, but also a financial one.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Though the researchers were aware parks tend to report lower tourism when poaching is a problem, this is the first attempt to calculate just how much of a negative impact on tourism poaching has, the researchers said.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Brendan Fisher, economist at the University of Vermont, summed it up in simple numbers: for every dollar spent to prevent poaching, parks in East Africa could expect to get about $1.78 back. The western and southern parts of the continent could also see their investment in elephant protection pay off, Fisher said.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">However, similar returns were not seen in central Africa, the researchers said.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">African elephant poaching has been a major problem since the late 1970s, and the animals have been classified as “threatened” by the Endangered Species Act since 1978. It’s estimated that over the past 10 years, African elephant populations have declined by over 20 percent.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Vermont, the University of Cambridge and the WWF.</span>

<b>Carbon dioxide emission maps, released today by NASA, shows just how much damage we are responsible for.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">This week, NASA released the first maps ever of human-made carbon dioxide emissions from satellite data. Data was collected from NASA’s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite, which provided information on carbon dioxide released from fossil fuels and other human activity.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">No prior satellite was capable of measuring carbon dioxide with enough clarity to create maps of human emissions. As a result, earlier maps had to include estimates based on data from other sources. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Three carbon dioxide emission maps were created by a team of scientists from the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki, led by Dr. Janne Hakkarainen. The maps focused on the highest carbon dioxide emitting areas: East Asia, Central Europe, and the eastern United States. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Hakkarainen noted, “OCO-2 can even detect smaller, isolated emitting areas like individual cities. It’s a power tool that gives new insight.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Because greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for at least 100 years, the trick was to separate the recent emissions from the total emissions. To test their data, the team compared their findings with measurements of nitrogen dioxide from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument on NASA’s Aura satellite. The two satellites are in the same satellite constellation and their measurements are therefore correlated. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Johanna Tamminen, head of the Atmospheric Remote Sensing Group at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, added, “The research demonstrates the possibility of analyzing joint satellite observations of carbon dioxide and other gases related to combustion processes to draw out information about the emissions sources.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">When you go hiking in the mountains, travel overseas, or visit a pristine beach, your photos may be more than just a memory of a great time. According to one expert, they're becoming valuable research data.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers are turning to Instagram, Flickr, and other social media sites to identify which destinations tourists feel are most important, according to Dr. Jordan Smith, director of the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University. Smith is also an assistant professor the university's Department of Environment and Society.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Smith – along with Boris van Zanten, Koen Tieskens and Peter Verburg of Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, as well as Derek van Berkel and Ross Meentenmeyer of North Carolina State University – took to the social media websites to identify and map the locations shown in the photos that were being shared.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">This helped them find what they have dubbed "hot spots" – outdoor spaces that tourists most want to visit. That data can be used to help prioritize landscape management and determine funding, Smith stated.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Today a team of scientists published three interlinked scientific articles together with two online databases, providing a catalogue with the names of all the species of pygmy moth.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Today there are more than 1050 known species of pygmy moths. The leaf-mining pygmy moth and the white eyecap moth are known for the patterns their caterpillars leave behind, known as leaf mines. Following DNA analysis on the evolutionary relationships of more than 1000 pygmy moth species, a new classification has been created.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">A team of scientists led by Dr. Erik J. van Nieukerken and Dr. Camiel Doorenweerd of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in The Netherlands published three reports in the journal </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Systematic Entomology</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that includes a catalogue of all pygmy moth species.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Their study found the presence of leaf mines in fossil leaves, indicating that pygmy moths started to diversify over 100 million years ago. Three new genera were discovered in South and Central America.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to change a classification, many species names must also be modified. As such, the team published a full catalogue of all the species names along with the various synonymic names that have been used in the past 150 years.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">252 million years ago, Planet Earth had a very bad day. The most disastrous mass extinction in the history of the planet occurred, wiping out most living things. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Recently a team of palaeontologists discovered fossils in Greenland that shed light on how recovery began at the two poles immediately following the catastrophic event, when even life far away from the equator was completely destroyed.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The ocean floor became very acidic and lacked oxygen, making it completely unlivable for most organisms. But newly discovered fossils have shown that bivalves and colonies of filter-feeding microconchid tube worms began to develop along the ocean floor. These are the first ancient microconchid fossils that have been discovered so far from the equator. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">“Our discovery is significant because it shows for the first time that sea floor life at higher latitudes suffered the same global extinction process,” says researcher Benjamin Kear. Kear and his team are part of a larger project intending to add to knowledge about the beginnings of aquatic animals. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">There is still much mystery surrounding why vertebrate animals left the sea for land 360 million years ago, and then returned to the sea 108 million years later – sudden mass environmental changes like an extinction event can trigger a dramatic shift in the trajectory of a species.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">As we reported earlier today, climate change is causing extreme reactions in the Arctic, where temperatures are rising twice as fast as in the rest of the world. Ice caps are melting and sea levels are rising, but there is at least one silver lining: the Arctic climate change opens up potential for commerce in the area, specifically agriculture. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In October, experts at a conference in Iceland discussed the potential for a growing Arctic agricultural economy. Over the next few decades, climate conditions are predicted to evolve so much that the land may be able to sustain vegetable and grain crops, as well as raising livestock. As Torfi Johannesson, president of the Circumpolar Agricultural Association, put it: “Agriculture will be possible in many places where it is not now.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Warmer temperatures have ushered in a longer growing season that will only continue to extend. Milan Sipka, director of the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, added, “The ability to work the ground occurred at least two weeks earlier [in the season] than what anyone would have expected.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, Alaska is home to 750 farms covering 830,000 acres of farmland that added $48 million to the economy in 2014. As the ground becomes more fertile and plant-friendly, it will not only allow for crop growth, but also increased grassy space to provide nourishment for animals. “There is all kinds of evidence that climate change is presenting positive impacts on agriculture in south Greenland, in terms of yield and variety,” said Joan Nymand Larsen, research director at the Stefansson Arctic Institute in Iceland.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">But the effects are not all positive. The region will also fall foul to pests and diseases that didn’t previously exist there. Rainfall will also vary – some potential farming areas may experience drought, while others flood.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The growing agricultural industry in Greenland could also run into conflict with the mining industry. Mining plays a huge part in Greenland’s economy, but radioactive dust from mining could contaminate nearby farming soil.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Only time will tell how the growth of Arctic agriculture will play out. For now, the possibility of such an industry brings a small bit of good news to an otherwise distressing climate trend.</span>

<b>Mexican avocado deforestation: world authorities voice concerns as forests are lost to make way for orchards. </b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In Mexico, deforestation rates are much higher than anyone previously thought. Michoacan, the world's largest producer of avocados, obliterates a shocking 20,000 hectares of forest each year for agriculture, nearly 40% of which consists of avocado orchards. Not only are they destroying forest habitats, the thirsty avocado plants require twice as much water as the decimated vegetation. Species like the famous monarch butterfly are in danger if deforestation increases at this rate.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Due to the thirsty fruit, less water is going to the Michoacan's crystalline mountain streams, which means the animal and plant populations of the forest are going without.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">As avocados rise in popularity so do the demands on production. Growers have been encouraged to expand orchards and increase their revenues, increasing the toll taken on the ecosystem. Warnings are coming today before irreparable damage is caused to the area.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">All in all, Michoacan already hosts around 150,000 hectares of orchards and has granted no new deforestation permits in the past few years. This impoverished state relies on revenue and jobs created from avocado production – the authorities are keen to encourage people to work within this legal field rather than in the growing synthetic drug production industry.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Talia Coria, an official in the attorney general's office for environmental protection, commented, "That is why we are sitting down now with all the parties involved to find a way to continue this industry of avocado growing, which provides a lot of jobs and income for the state, in harmony with the conservation of our natural resources. We are going to search for a way . . . to ensure that all avocados exported are legal, and that the environment has not been affected by their production. The avocado growers appear to be convinced that we have to find options for conserving the environment."</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">However, this district has no definite plan to develop any official sustainable avocado schemes to reduce Mexican avocado deforestation, despite Ms. Coria admitting it is difficult to differentiate the legal avocados from avocados grown on illegal sites, adding that other agricultural activities have also contributed to the deforestation.</span>

<b>Arctic Ocean naval operations may change as ice melts. Commerce, tourism and exploration could pose a new security threat.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In the Arctic Ocean our accessible waters are expanding as sea ice diminishes. Due to the changing </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">environment, scientists have been studying the region to understand these changes and support the U.S. Navy’s actions in a region which was once unreachable. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) commissioned research on this topic, which was published today.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"This changing environment is opening the Arctic for expanded maritime and naval activity. Developing a deeper understanding and knowledge of this environment is essential for reliable weather and ice predictions to ensure the safety of future scientific and operational activities in the region," said Rear Admiral Mat Winter, chief of naval research.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The National Snow and Ice Data Center recently revealed that 2016's sea ice minimum tied with 2007 for the second-lowest ice minimum since the 1970s. The lowest minimum ever was recorded in 2012.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In order to understand the region, scientists measured the strength and intensity of waves and swells moving through the sea ice. This growing database will help develop models and prediction forecasts for ice, ocean and weather conditions.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The research team uses sophisticated equipment to gauge temperature, salinity, ice and ambient noise conditions under the ice surface.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"Abundant sea ice reduces waves and swells and keeps the Arctic Ocean very quiet," said Dr. Robert Headrick, an ONR program officer overseeing the research. "With increased sea ice melt, however, come more waves and wind, which create more noise and make it harder to track undersea vessels. The goal of [this research] is to gain a better and more comprehensive understanding of these changing oceanographic conditions."</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Arctic Ocean naval operations have been reduced to submarine operations based on the thick coverage of sea ice, but as this ice melts, opportunities are opened up for commerce, tourism and exploration, in turn raising new security concerns. This process could create new navel requirements in the area.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"Having accurate forecasting models will help the Navy determine what types of surface vessels it will need to build in the near future and 30 years from now, to withstand the climate conditions," said Dr. Scott Harper, another ONR program officer. "That way, the Navy can operate as safely and effectively in the Arctic as it does throughout the rest of the world."</span>

<b>A new microsatellite resource helps in keeping plant research costs down.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Too often, scientific breakthroughs are held back due to lack of funding. Genetic research, in particular, can quickly become costly when dealing with specific genome analysis. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">A team of scientists from the University of Florida led by Richard Hodel set out to make genetic research easier and more affordable. Through two pieces published in </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Applications in Plant Sciences,</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> they have laid out guidelines for using microsatellites for research projects on a wide variety of plant species. In addition, they offer a resource of over five million microsatellites.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Microsatellites are genetic markers that are unique in their ability to be used for many different kinds of genetic research. They can be tested for the presence of a particular gene, used to discover the relationship between individual cases versus the full population, as well as to track and create genome maps.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Hodel remarks, “Often, an initial barrier to starting a project is securing funding to develop genetic markers, if none are available for the study system of interest. Our microsatellite resource will allow researchers to search for loci that are available for a wide range of species, for free.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Microsatellites were originally identified from sequence data found in the online database of the One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Project (1KP). Genetic data from the 1KP database can be utilized for marker development and is what allowed the team to compile the 5 million new microsatellite resource for further research.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The resource is essentially a gift to the genetic research community and opens the door for lower-budget research projects to thrive. Hodel adds, “The goal was to give people practical guidance and to enable them to consider all of their options.”</span>

<b>Golfers beware – a new golf course fungal disease is attacking southern U.S. courses.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Drought conditions, uninvited wildlife, and fungal growth are all common problems for golf courses from time to time. Recently, however, a strange new phenomenon has been popping up on golf courses in the southeastern United States, where patches of turf turned black and resembled a large ink spill. Not only has the golf course fungal disease ruined the famously pristine aesthetic of these courses, but it has also made some golfers fearful of playing.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Scientists from Mississippi State University have finally identified the culprit. </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Curvularia malina</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a new fungus species previously unknown to experts. The name “malina” stems from the Sanskrit word meaning “dirty or stained,” due to its dark, blotchy appearance. The finding was published by Dr. Young-Ki Jo and his partner Dr. Maria Tomaso-Peterson in the </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mycologia</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> journal.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Because the pathogen is newly discovered, golf course managers have been sweating over how to address the issue. “If we don’t know the biology of a fungus, there is no management protocol,” said Dr. Jo. Fungicides can be incredibly expensive, costing over $5,000 per treatment, and may not even be effective against the new strain. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Nevertheless, Jo and team were able to come up with a fungicide that could work preventatively against </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Curvularia malina</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> at the times of year when it’s most likely to occur. Not surprisingly, it is during the more humid months when the fungus flourishes. Luckily, it doesn’t actually kill grass, and the condition often clears up once drier conditions return. </span>

<i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Curvularia malina</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> will still leave a blemish on the grass even after it clears up. As a result, southern golf courses will need to keep on top of preventative preparation in order to stay one step ahead of the new fungal threat.</span>

<b>Southern Spain climate change fears are at the forefront in a new report suggesting the Mediterranean could turn to dust as soon as the year 2100.</b>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Using historical data and computer models, experts predict a dramatic change for Southern Spain in the face of global warming.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The researchers say any warming above 2°C will cause these drastic results. Even more dramatically, they did not factor in any additional impact caused by human activity.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Scientists warn that Southern Spain climate will cause deserts to form, and forests will vanish by 2100 unless urgent changes are made. Such drastic climate changes have not been seen in the past 10,000 years.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Co-leader of the study Dr. Joel Guiot, researcher at the National Centre of Scientific Research in France, said: “The Paris Agreement says it's necessary to limit global warming to 2°C (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), if possible 1.5°. That doesn't seem much to people, but we wanted to see what the difference would be on a sensitive region like the Mediterranean.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The researchers used pollen records to gauge the effect temperatures had on plants, creating four scenarios based on various concentrations of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The richly biodiverse region has been long cultivated by humans. “Climate has always been important there,” said Mr. Guiot. The ancient Egyptians to the Greeks and the Romans all emerged from the Mediterranean. He noted that their demise would have been influenced by socio-political factors but climate may have played a large role.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Guiot warned that climate change could spark mass migrations of people.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Mediterranean basin is already experiencing severe water shortages, exacerbated by intensive agriculture and tree clearing.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">“If anything, human action will exacerbate what the study projects, and it could turn out to be too optimistic,” Dr. Guiot said.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Paris Climate Agreement comes into effect this week.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Cats, the elusive, ornery species as famous for their grace as their characteristic nonconformity, are baffling researchers once again.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">It has been reported in a study today that the brains of wild cats evolve in very different ways to fellow mammals.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Sharleen Sakai, neuroscientist at Michigan State University, led the study which suggests many factors influencing carnivores’ brain anatomy, beyond socialization. She commented, “Studying feline brain evolution has been a bit like herding cats – our findings suggest the factors that drive brain evolution in wild cats are likely to differ from selection pressures identified in primate brain evolution.”</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Scientists believe that mammals who possess large frontal lobes are social creatures, which include humans and monkeys. However, in direct contradiction to this theory, cheetahs are also highly socialized, but their frontal lobes are relatively small, while leopards are solitary hunters and yet their frontal lobes are enlarged.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Sakai and her team obtained 75 wild feline skulls representing 13 species from museum collections. The researchers used CT scans and sophisticated software to digitally "fill in" the areas where the brains would have been present. By doing this, they could determine brain volume.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr. Sakai's big cat brain research is attempting to understand factors which influence carnivore brain evolution. It is a common belief that making and retaining relationships is more demanding than solitary living and hence requires a larger brain.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"We wanted to know if this idea, called the 'social brain' hypothesis, applied to other social mammals, especially carnivores and, in particular, wild cats," Dr. Sakai explained.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Her team's big cat brain research included 13 wild feline species, 11 of which were solitary and two social. They made some surprising discoveries from this data:</span>
<ul>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Overall brain size did not differ between the social and solitary species of wild cats – but the part of the brain that includes the frontal cortex did differ between them.</span></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The female lion had the largest frontal cortex; female lions are highly social, working together to protect and feed their young, hunt large prey, and defend their territory. In contrast, males may live alone and may be dominant in a pride for only a few years. The larger frontal cortex in females compared to male lions and the other wild cats may reflect lionesses' demands for processing the social information necessary for life in the pride.</span></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The social cheetahs, in contrast, had the smallest overall brains and the smallest frontal cortex of the wild cats. Small brains weigh less and require less energy, factors that might contribute to the cheetah's remarkable running speeds. "Cheetah brain anatomy is distinctive and differs from other wild cats," Dr. Sakai described. "The size and shape of its brain may be a consequence of its unusual skull shape, an adaptation for high-speed pursuits."</span></li>
 	<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Leopards' frontal lobes were relatively large. Although the leopard is solitary, it is noted for its flexibility and adaptability – behaviors associated with enhanced brain processing and larger brain size in other species.</span></li>

This period occurred long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, when no complex plants or multicellular animals existed.</p>



<p>Dr. Adriana Dutkiewicz, the study's lead author, describes a world completely unlike today's climate. "Imagine the Earth almost completely frozen over," she explained. "The planet was blanketed in ice from poles to equator, and temperatures plunged."</p>

<p>The research team discovered that this massive freeze resulted from a "double whammy" of geological events. First, plate tectonic activity reduced volcanic carbon dioxide emissions to historically low levels. <p>Simultaneously, weathering of volcanic rocks in what is now Canada actively absorbed atmospheric CO2, further reducing greenhouse gas concentrations. The ground there is rising at a remarkable rate. Over the past decade, some areas have lifted about 20 centimeters, which translates to roughly 2 meters per century. This rate significantly exceeds current projections for sea level rise.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-geological-rebound-process-through-climate-change">Geological rebound process through climate change</h2>



<p>The mechanism behind this phenomenon is straightforward. As the ice sheet melts, the immense weight is removed from the bedrock, causing the land to rebound upward. This process resembles the way compressed material springs back when pressure is released.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scientific-monitoring-networks">Scientific monitoring networks</h2>



<p>Researchers at the <a href="https://www.dtu.dk/english/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Technical University of Denmark</a> are documenting this uplift using the GNET network, consisting of 61 GPS stations positioned around Greenland's coast. These sensors can detect movement with millimeter precision, providing detailed measurements of the ongoing changes.</p>



<p>The data reveal that current uplift rates exceed the gradual rebound occurring since the last ice age ended approximately 12,000 years ago. This acceleration corresponds directly with increased ice sheet melting rates.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-coastal-transformation">Coastal Transformation</h2>



<p>This uplift is actively reshaping Greenland's coastline. New islands and rocky formations, called "skerries," are emerging as previously submerged land surfaces rise above the water level. This represents a notable contrast to global concerns about rising seas.</p>

<p>In a discovery that can one day revolutionize cancer treatment, researchers at the <a href="https://www.ucr.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of California, Riverside</a> have successfully developed a means of controlling MYC, a notoriously slippery protein that causes approximately <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/chaotic-protein-that-fuels-75-of-cancers-can-be-controlled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">75% of all cancers in humans</a>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-makes-myc-different">What makes MYC different</h2>



<p>MYC presents a unique challenge when studying cancer. Normally, this protein plays a vital role in healthy cells. It carefully controls transcription - the process that converts genetic information from DNA and RNA into proteins.</p>



<p>However, cancer changes everything. In cancer cells, MYC becomes a destructive force. It operates in overdrive mode with no regulation whatsoever.</p>



<p>Professor Min Xue, who led the research team, explains it simply: "MYC is less like food for cancer cells and more like a steroid. It drives cancer's aggressive growth." This superactive behavior makes MYC involved in three out of every four cancer cases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-why-myc-is-hard-to-target">Why MYC is hard to target</h2>



<p>Despite its clear role in cancer, targeting MYC has been one of medicine's biggest challenges. The main problem lies in MYC's unusual structure - or rather, its complete lack of structure.</p>



<p>Professor Xue describes the protein as "basically a glob of randomness." This means conventional drug discovery methods don't work. These traditional approaches rely on sharply defined protein structures. MYC simply doesn't have one.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A New Approach to Fighting MYC</h2>



<p>The UCR research team developed a clever solution. They designed a special peptide molecule that could selectively bind to MYC. More importantly, this peptide could block MYC's destructive activity.</p>



<p>The key was fine-tuning two specific features: the peptide's stiffness and its shape. Through careful adjustments, researchers achieved something remarkable. They reached "sub-micro-molar affinity" - meaning their peptide binds as strongly as antibodies do.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-breakthrough-results">Breakthrough results</h2>



<p>This accomplishment represents a major leap beyond previous attempts. The researchers enhanced their peptide's binding strength by two orders of magnitude. This dramatic improvement brings the work significantly closer to practical drug development goals.</p>

<p>The researchers are presently optimizing peptide-delivery systems based on lipid nanoparticles that deliver the peptide effectively into cancer cells. It was here, however, that an international team of scientists found <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/predatory-worms-were-terror-beasts-half-a-billion-years-ago/#google_vignette" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">evidence of sea monsters</a> that would change our understanding of ocean life in the past.</p>



<p>This video captures the discovery of Timorebestia fossils that had been hidden for more than 500 million years in the Sirius Passet formation. The "terror beasts," as they are called, are a hidden chapter in the evolutionary history of <a href="https://www.earth.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Earth</a>, showing that sophisticated predator-prey interactions occurred much earlier than previously envisioned.</p>



<p>Dr. Jakob Vinther and his research team at the <a href="https://www.bristol.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">University of Bristol</a>, in collaboration with researchers at the <a href="https://eng.kopri.re.kr/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Korean Polar Research Institute</a>, braved extreme weather conditions at 82.5 north latitude to locate these giant creatures. Using sophisticated electron microprobe analysis, they revealed the detailed anatomy of the animals, including their muscle and nerve tissues.</p>



<p>The find upsets the traditional timeline of sea predators.  Although we've long appreciated that Cambrian oceans were at one time ruled by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWI3-UgA3_o&amp;list=PL1QLQMW9MWDwpkFOnvgAmu7wT6rZmYqdJ&amp;index=19" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">arthropods</a>, these discoveries indicate that relatives of arrow worms were first to dominate the seas.  These worms were building sophisticated food webs several million years before other predator groups arose.</p>



<p>Each fossil is a story of ancient hunger, with fossil stomach contents revealing these meter-long beasts dined on heavily armored arthropods regularly, cementing their place as the ocean's first apex predators.</p>

<p>Scientists have uncovered something extraordinary just two hours north of New York City. The <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/worlds-oldest-forest-discovered-close-to-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">world's oldest forest</a>, dating back 385 million years, offers a window into how Earth's first complex forests shaped our planet's atmosphere.</p>



<p>Located near <a href="https://townofcairo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cairo, New York</a>, in Greene County, these weren't merely primitive plants struggling to survive. These were sophisticated trees with root systems remarkably similar to modern forests. This ancient woodland predates dinosaurs by 140 million years.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-cairo-forest-discovery">The Cairo forest discovery</h2>



<p>385 million years ago, upstate New York was a tropical paradise near the equator. Thanks to continental drift, this ancient forest has traveled thousands of miles to its current location.</p>



<p>The fossil forest sits in an abandoned quarry, roughly half the size of a football field. This represents just a slice of what was likely a massive forest system stretching from New York into Pennsylvania.</p>



<p>Charles Ver Straeten, curator of sedimentary rocks at the <a href="https://www.nysm.nysed.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">New York State Museum</a>, made the discovery in 2009. While scouting the former highway department property, his trained eye spotted wandering patterns in the stone that looked like marine features.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-revolutionary-age-and-preservation">Revolutionary age and preservation</h2>



<p>The site contains 385-million-year-old rocks with fossilized woody roots forming horizontal patterns up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) wide. As Christopher Berry, a paleobotanist at Cardiff University, explains: "You are walking through the roots of ancient trees."</p>



<p>This discovery pushes back advanced tree evolution by millions of years. The research, published in <em><a href="https://www.cell.com/current-biology/home" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Current Biology</a></em> in December 2019, fundamentally changes our understanding of when complex forests first emerged.</p>



<p>Researchers believe a massive flood buried the forest floor, creating perfect fossilization conditions. Over millions of years, sediment hardened into rock, preserving these root patterns like nature's time capsule.</p>

<p>William Stein from <a href="https://www.binghamton.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Binghamton University</a> describes the roots as "strikingly modern, essentially what you'd see outside in my yard right now." These weren't simple root systems you'd expect from ancient plants.</p>



<p>Some fossilized roots are six inches (15 centimeters) in diameter, forming 36-foot-wide (11-meter) patterns. These giants grew up to 65 feet (20 meters) tall with five-foot-diameter (1.5-meter) trunks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-climate-changing-impact">Climate-changing impact</h2>



<p>These trees fundamentally changed Earth's environment. Kevin Boyce, a Stanford University geoscientist, explains how their deep roots triggered "weathering," chemical reactions that pulled carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.</p>



<p>This process dropped atmospheric CO2 levels from 10-15 times higher than today to roughly modern concentrations. These ancient trees helped create atmospheric conditions that made complex life possible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ancient-forest-ecosystem">Ancient forest ecosystem</h2>



<p>The forest was remarkably diverse. Scientists identified <em>Eospermatopteris</em>, palm tree-like plants with short roots that reached 30 feet (9 meters) tall but lacked woody structure. The forest also housed cladoxylopsids and a mysterious third species still being studied.</p>



<p>All reproduced through spores rather than seeds – millions of years before seeds evolved. This tropical environment had no grass, flowers, or flying insects, just towering trees creating Earth's first complex forest canopy.</p>

<p>"It's possible some of these changes could be tied to lifestyle or behavioral factors that cluster at these age groups, rather than being driven by biological factors," Snyder explained. For instance, alcohol metabolism dysfunction might result from increased consumption during the typically stressful mid-40s period.</p>



<p>The changes at age 60 are perhaps less surprising, as this is when many age-related diseases begin to manifest more prominently. The molecular shifts affect immune function and kidney health, both critical for maintaining overall wellness as we enter our senior years.</p>

<p>Remember the 1980s when acid rain dominated headlines? Dire warnings about rain eating buildings, killing fish, and destroying forests filled every news cycle. <p>The answer might surprise you. Unlike many environmental issues that drag on indefinitely, acid rain represents one of modern history's most successful ecological recovery stories. It's a tale of science, politics, and technology working together to tackle what seemed impossible.</p>

<p>Acid rain isn't regular rain having a bad day – it's precipitation that became significantly more acidic due to air pollution. When power plants, factories, and vehicles burn fossil fuels, they release sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Probiotics - beneficial microbes that balance gut bacteria and aid digestion - are typically fragile and can be destroyed by stomach acid or processing. </p>



<p>Prebiotics act as food for these microbes, helping them thrive. Together, they form "synbiotics," a powerful health combination.</p>



<p>Researchers Smriti Gaur and Shubhi Singh from India's Jaypee Institute of Information Technology took an innovative approach, using natural prebiotics like corn and honey instead of complex processing methods. </p>



<p>They created five chocolate varieties: a control and four synbiotic versions containing different combinations of prebiotics, probiotics (Lactobacillus strains), and flavor enhancers (cinnamon or orange).</p>



<p>Laboratory simulations of human digestion showed the probiotics remained viable for over five hours, suggesting they could survive long enough to benefit gut health.</p>



<p>Taste tests were positive, with researchers particularly enjoying the orange-flavored variety, describing it as having "vibrant citrus notes" complementing the "rich cocoa" with a "luxurious" texture.</p>



<p>This research represents just the beginning. With further refinement of strains, textures, and flavors, chocolate could evolve beyond mere indulgence to become a functional food that nourishes while it delights.</p>

<p>"The bay is primarily fed by the Nushagak River, which begins in the Alaska Range and flows southwest approximately 450 km. The bay is also fed by several additional rivers including the Wood, Igushik, Snake and Weary rivers," says ESA.</p>



<p>"The dark colors of the Nushagak River are most likely due to tannins or lignins (chemical substances found in plants). Tannins and lignins from roots, leaves, seeds, bark and soil can leach into the water and give it a brown or even black colour. The sediments then flow southwards where it is mixed with the bluer waters of the bay."</p>

According to the experts, these proteins could be used to better defend against the flu.</p>



<p>"The main antigenic targets of influenza virus are two surface glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Whereas the structural and dynamical properties of both glycoproteins have been studied previously, the understanding of their plasticity in the whole-virion context is fragmented," wrote the researchers.</p>



<p>To investigate, the team conducted detailed simulations of the influenza A H1N1 virion, or the swine flu. The experts concluded that the visualizations show many new vulnerable states of flu viruses, which could improve future vaccines and antiviral drugs.</p>

It is the fourth largest lake in the country. While Trasimeno’s water level varies, it has a maximum depth of approximately six meters.&nbsp;</p>



<p>"In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, captured on 6 August 2022, the lake’s emerald green colour is likely due to the presence of phytoplankton. Streaks in the water, particularly visible in the west, indicate the presence of soil and sediments which have been stirred up by winds. Dark colored waters in the southern part of the lake indicate a presence of submerged and floating macrophytes (aquatic plants) as well as algae," says ESA.</p>



<p>"Surrounded by hills on three sides, Trasimeno is subject to heavy storms created by winds, especially from the north and west. There are three islets in the lake: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese (the largest). The lake’s shores are sparsely inhabited with only two popular villages: Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno."</p>



<p>"Italy is experiencing its worst drought in 70 years which has affected drinking water supplies, hydroelectric power and agricultural production. High temperatures, hot winds and lack of rainfall are the main causes of drought in the Umbrian region which saw Lake Trasimeno’s drop 1.3 m, reaching the limit of the hydrometric zero in July 2022."</p>

<p>The oxidized form of mercury can be harmful when it is ingested through contaminated water or food. This makes it necessary for experts to develop sensors that can quickly and accurately detect the presence of mercury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Zong-Hong Lin and colleagues have now created a triboelectric nanosensor (TENS) that can detect mercury by simply by touching a sample. According to the researchers, their TENS could serve as the basis for similar devices to safely and remotely monitor other pollutants.</p>

<p>Today’s <strong>Video of the Day</strong> from the <a href="https://www.esa.int/">European Space Agency</a> features Kainji Lake, a reservoir on the Niger River.</p>



<p>In 1968, Kainji Lake was created by the construction of the Kainji Dam. The Niger River, the third longest in Africa, enters the lake in the north.&nbsp;</p>



<p>According to <a href="https://www.earth.com/news/rivers-in-the-american-west-are-a-lifesaving-resource-for-birds/">ESA</a>, the creation of the lake submerged Foge Island and the town of Bussa and permanently flooded other riverine settlements, leaving around 50,000 people displaced.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Large parts of Foge Island are temporarily exposed during low water tides, and the land is often used by migrating fishermen. Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of Central Nigeria. </p>



<p>Wild mammals occur at relatively low densities due to illegal hunting. Lake Kainji has suffered a dramatic decline as a fishery due to the high numbers of artisanal and subsistence fisherfolk using the lake. It has been suggested that a period of closure, together with controlled fishing rights may help improve fish stocks.</p>



<p>Kainji Lake National Park is the oldest of its kind in Nigeria. The park contains three distinct areas: a part of the Kainji Lake, the Borgu Game Reserve to the west of the lake, and the Zugurma Game Reserve to the southeast. The park is home to around 65 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 30 species of reptiles and amphibians. </p>
